Review - "The Big Parade" (1925)
I watched "The Big Parade" directed by King Vidor and George W. Hill. It stars John Gilbert, Renée Adorée, Renée Adorée, Karl Dane and many others. It is a silent film from 1925 and runs for 151 minutes. I enjoyed this film and found it interesting. I think I recently read that someone found this boring but I didn't find it boring at all. It actually has many "parades" throughout the film. I thought this was an engaging film that had many changes in emotions and perspectives throughout the film. There was a lot of character development in John Gilbert. The quality of the film was very good since, as noted in a New York Times review, the film
... happens to be one of the relatively few silent features for which the original negative still exists. "
A summary from IMDb, "In the period before The Great War, James Apperson lives a good life thanks in large part to his father's fortune. He's engaged to the beautiful Justyn Reed. He's something of a disappointment to his father; thankfully, his more-serious brother plays the good son and is involved in the family business. When the U.S. enters the the war, James is caught up in all the hoopla and enlists. He makes new friends, particularly Slim and Bull, and they're soon off to France. While awaiting their move to the front lines, James meets young Frenchwoman Melisande. Life is good for all of them, but when they move up, they experience the horrors of war and James is forever a changed man."
From a New York Times review by Dave Kehr, "Today, the film remains a heartfelt but shrewdly judged blend of comedy, romance, action and tragedy — a movie that perfectly embodies the classical Hollywood ideal of providing something to appeal to every member of what, in the 1920s, was a wide public still unsevered by demographic categories."
From a Senses of Cinema review by Tony Williams, "The Big Parade is a film of ambivalence and contradiction. Touching in its narrative of an individual caught in circumstances beyond his control and trapped by conventional ideology that cannot allow an alternative picture of World War I, it is nevertheless an accomplished film. Veterans and later audiences may be fully aware of the conventions used and deeper implications existing within a narrative whose postwar American sequences contains the seeds of The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946) (10). Isenberg may be formally correct in his assertion that “None of its ingredients were new; they were only packaged differently”, but parts of the film gained significant responses from the veterans who saw it at the time, as Brownlow reports (11). They did not see the film as mindless entertainment. Neither should we."
Actually I thought it was a remarkable film for the time.
