Author Spotlight: Apolline Lucy

This week, we're excited to bring you a guest essay titled Exploring the Dark and the Romantic in my Upcoming Novel: THE SILVER BIRDS from author Apolline Lucy. THE SILVER BIRDS will be released on September 26, 2023.

When the idea for my novel struck me, I immediately knew I wanted it to be a sapphic enemies-to-lovers story. Sapphic, because I wanted to write about women; enemies-to-lovers because I basically live for this trope. But I didn’t want romance to be at its core. I wanted to craft characters filled with rage and wants for revenge, characters so fiercely protective of the ones they trust enough to love, that they became monsters.

By mixing gore—the visceral, the violent, and the gruesome—and sapphic—love, desire, and identity—I wanted to explore the darkest corners of human existence, defy expectations, and create a space for queer characters to exist outside the confines of heteronormative narratives. My novel isn’t about characters being lesbian—they just happen to be. It’s about them grappling with their own demons and external threats.

That being said, the horror elements in THE SILVER BIRDS do serve as a metaphor for the discrimination and violence LGBTQ+ individuals have historically faced. The book explores the themes of survival and resilience, reflecting the real battles queer people face in their daily lives. But it’s more than just thrills; it's about empowerment. It’s about wanting to give voice to characters from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities, and make fantasy a more inclusive and richer genre.

As THE SILVER BIRDS is self-published, I had the freedom to explore taboos and delve deep into themes of obsession, vengeance, and the blurred lines between love and violence. Some scenes are quite graphic and might have faced heavy censorship in traditional publishing. But I believe they challenge readers to confront uncomfortable truths and question the boundaries of desire, love, and violence.

Despite the darkness, my novel ultimately celebrates sapphic love. It’s a reminder that love is a powerful force, even in the face of adversity. I’m committed to writing happy endings because the world is already a terrible place, and I want my books to offer an escape. Yes, I will torture my characters, present them with impossible choices, and reveal terrible consequences for their actions. But I will also grant them happy endings. Love must triumph, even in the darkest of places.

the wip below was for day 5 of tes fest but i. as usual. got behind. maybe i'll publish it on it's own (though... are you allowed to post tes fest fics superbly late to the collection???)

I told myself that sitting alone in complete darkness did not bother me because I am an Argonian. Argonians are of the Hist-- as my mother told me from a young age. The Hist is like one massive tree that connects to each and every Argonian; therefore, I was currently being a root of the Hist rather than one of its leaves or branches. Every tree keeps its roots in total darkness for as long as it lives. I told myself this situation would turn out fine and that my mother would inevitably notice I had yet to return home. Tree roots would not let such simple things as being held captive bother them anyway, right? But these indistinguishable noises-- some which almost seemed to be voices-- that were scattered throughout my hearing made the prospect of sitting still very unsettling for me. It was worse with this metal cage keeping me trapped in one little section of Hackdirt’s cavernous underbelly. Awful, awful Hackdirt.

Please go buy and read @tilting-at-windmills poetry chapbook. It's gotten good reviews. It's about the journey from trauma to healing. It's kind of weird and experimental. The cover is fucking incredible.

It's also about Maia's work with genocide victims in Iraq and how it helped her to regain faith in humanity so if you also want to learn about that cause just read her bio because it's the entire thing.

It's on bookshop.org and Amazon plus it's on goodreads. If you feel inspired to leave me an amazing review, well, that would really brighten the shit time I've been having lately.

My main Genre is Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery and thriller, But I do love widening my scope so do recommend me any books you might think may pique my interest. 😁

My reader side also includes me obsessing over podcasts, I'm including my Favourite podcasts here too, and I assure you they are amazing!

Podcasts for you - I usually listen to them on Spotify and love True crime, mystery, Murder mysteries etc. Here they are -

Rotten Mango by Stephanie Soo (True Crime) - I wouldn't suggest you listen to this if you get disgusted or scared easily, I usually am not affected by these kinds of things and I was still very disturbed, The first 2 episodes are quite... I would suggest you research about it more before you listen to it.

Baking a Murder by Stephanie Soo (Books and movies) - This podcast is again one of my favourites, the way she explains the movie is just so immersive, if you want to understand a story but don't have time to sit down and read the book/watch the movie then this is for you.

7 Suspects by Cryptic Radio(Murder Mystery ) - OH MY GOD, holy- this is probably one of the best mystery podcasts I've ever listened to, tbh you think you know what is going on and till the very end that is kinda sorta true, but then in the like the last 5 moments the plot twist so intense you are left sinking on to the floor thinking "What just happened", listen to, right now.

Magnus Archives by Rusty Quill (Story? horror? not sure what it comes under) - I've started listening to it after getting intense FOMO and can confirm it's going pretty well, I mean I have a LOT to catch up to, but I can say, it's caught my interest.

Murder in HR by Caspian Studios (Murder Mystery) - Again OH MY GOD, again, this is one of the best mystery podcasts I've ever listened to, I mean yeah, the gym ad thingy gets a little bit annoying but the rest of the story compensates for it, again, you think you know where you are going, again up until the very end you just don't know what the hell is going on, and again (Do you see a pattern) when the mystery hits you you are flabbergasted, soo I suggest give it a listen(also kinda obsessed with the soundtrack).

Murphy's Inc. by 97toNow Productions (Scifi mystery) - This is one of the better ones, I'm still listening to it and it's just actually really good, It's kinda the thing you listen to once a day, kinda relaxing (for me at least )

Ok, so this one is a bit different, there is a podcast Caso 63: Enigma: Spotify studios but it's in Spanish which I still haven't quite learnt and I didn't know this existed. I was recommended 2063 theke Esechi by Spotify Studios which is in Bengali which I do, in fact, understand. It was voiced by one of my favourite actors and I was absolutely in love with it, It feels like I wasn't listening to a podcast but a movie and there is so much confusion and so many twists. This podcast has been made in other languages as well, the other two ik are Case 63 (In English) and Virus 2062(In Hindi). So check it out!!

Treat by C13Features (Horror, gory) - This is like a podcast movie, it's around 2 hours long maybe? this is pretty good I would say, you can give it a listen.

Welcome to Night Vale by Night Vale Presents (Absurdity?) - I really don't think I need to say anythi_-_- HAIL THE GLOWCLOUD.

The Sounds of Nightmares by Little Nightmares - Bandai Namco Europe (Horror, gore, mystery) - Uhh it's a little unnerving how detailed the actions of characters are As if they were compensating for the fact that there are no visuals, but it was pretty good I would say(Also like the soundtrack)

My writer side- My most popularly known name is Jeah (jee - ah) and I'll be using that here, I am a new author getting started on writing. I still have a looong way to go but, I enjoy writing very much even though my mind and body are definitely not on par with my will to write which is why my second unintended hobby is procrastination. Most of the time that I'm here on Tumblr I am supposed to be doing some other work, like right now.

Anywaysss here are my current WIP's

Mirror My Way - This is my first and only properly published Book. Tbh Not very proud of it, I did it in a hurry, because I took part in the school's Writing program, did nothing the whole year, and finished it in the last week, I honestly think It had potential but I kinda ruined it trying to finish it within the deadline. I wouldn't recommend you read it, It was supposed to be a part of a duology or trilogy but I think I'm just gonna let it sit in the corner for now, let it be there, think upon its mistakes, it did wrong 😤.

Tots and Coffee - Now this one I like better, this was actually inspired by the Scam Caller post here on Tumblr. Kinda had a sudden burst of inspiration and Wrote the first Chapter and since then it's still going pretty strong. Unlike the previous one, it is there on Ao3 if you wish to read it 😁.

I dunno what to call this but I occasionally write short stories in the replies of Pinterest pins when I come across writing prompts. This isn't a wip exactly but , I once posted the starting of a story and jokingly wrote "Continue-!" at the end thinking that would be the end of it, but someone did eventually continue it and that led to a string of events and a very weirdly Eledritch, beautiful Frankestine story formation, I'll be posting it slowly here on Tumblr as well, so keep checking!

I sent the questionnaire to the main couples of my two YA Dystopia books I'm working on, namely Justin and Joselyn from The Blood Cleaners and Nari and Abe from Sanctuary Calling.

1. What would it take for you to admit you were wrong?

Justin: When I am puzzled to not get the results I expected.

Joselyn: When I see someone I love suffer.

Abe: When I’m dying.

Nari: When others pay the price for what I did.

2. Are you forgetful? If so, how do you remind yourself to do things?

Justin: I’m not forgetful because I could get my hide tanned if I wasn’t. Not to mention I don’t want some jerks to forget what they did to me. 

Joselyn: I am the one reminding my sisters and co-workers of what to do.

Abe: I can be. My sisters often send me reminders. I also follow our routine on the farm to the tee. 

Nari: I’m not forgetful. I credit my calendar and chart I carry in my smart watch wherever I go. I have every hour of my day planned out.

3. Do you consider yourself a neat freak?

Justin: My job involves cleaning things sixteen hours a day. No way I’m going to clean things up when I’m not working. Well, unless Mamá asks me.

Joselyn: Not a neat freak, but I make sure my sisters clean their rooms, mine is tidy, and the house is clean. It helps keep my parents from exploding (they already do, but this way they have one less excuse to)

Abe: I’m messy, but I feel bad if my Mutter and sisters clean up after me. 

Nari: Yes, everything has to be spotless! After I get my homework done, I don’t get anything else done until I’ve cleaned up everything to a tee!

Heads Up Seven Up

I'm going to perfectly honest, I'm not actually sure what the rules for this are. So I'm just posting the last thing that I wrote.

He gazed down at the water of the lake, it sparkled in the afternoon sunlight, a thousand shards of light glimmering amongst the sapphire expanse. Beneath the surface he could see flashes of silver and gold, fish, hundreds of them, they swam and darted beneath the beneath the hull, occasional one would approach the surface, just long enough for Narul to make out the chromatic glimmer of its scales, the flash of a tail fin. Further down he could just make out the swaying fronds of lakeweed, verdant greens and rich reds, between these aquatic trees larger things weaved. He thought he saw the flash of teeth. He stepped back from the edge.

All the heat he built died in that bite—a bite that never healed, that would serve as my reminder of who owned me for all my years—and I sought purchase on the headboard with the hunger of it, the shock. Ice those teeth, ice that spread through the wound he broke in me, digging through my veins. And their sharpness had me fearing his gleaming white teeth were growing, branching, racing up my bloodstream like starving roots to steal every sip of my life.

Cave wide, its eyes were lit with man-sized fires but its face bore a delicate, oval sweetness with a serene smile on lips that looked far too human. Yet it was no man, no flesh and blood creature either. It was rock and sea and fire. Ocean water poured from its head as it rose higher, as waterfalls of hair it was, glistening in the moonlight and the peculiar orange flames of its eyes. Higher it rose, allowing the sight of a slender neck and what struck me as islands on their own on either side until it tilted that impossible head and those islands shrugged ever so slightly.

I don't know how I managed 90k words into this thing without a single one being 'guilt', but here we are.

I held him tighter, “You ruined nothing,” more kisses to his shoulders, his neck, distracting so he wouldn’t try to run again, “you were perfect, as you always are,” Turning him around to face me, to show that my eyes shined just as wet, I added, “and you’re not the only one with tears.” That earned a smile and he wriggled a hand between us to wipe my tears, “So beautiful you are, treasure.” “You like when I cry?” I asked through a laugh. Narrowing his eyes, he bit his smile and tried to play coy, “Perhaps...a little.”
