Stapelia gigantea
Stapelia is the genus that gives its name to the large assemblage of plants known as the stapeliads. Its succulent stems are pliable rather than rigid, and they look much like those found in related genera, except that they have a felted texture rather than being smooth. The flowers are very large (up to 10 inches across, or 25 cm), and the textured ridges on them, as well as the hairs and the foul smell, are features often seen in this group. The reason for the foul smell is to attract the flies that pollinate them. It is a very successful strategy, and this species often spreads spontaneously in gardens. It occurs naturally over a wide area in southern and eastern Africa.

Large milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) on Hoya cumingiana. This species of hoya is less vine-like than many, with stiffer, self-supporting stems, and relatively small, thick leaves. These adaptations make it very tolerant of periods of extreme heat and low humidity, and even some direct sun outdoors. In the evenings, the flowers smell strongly of mango and cinnamon.

Summary:
Twenty-two years after the Survival Multiplayer event, Quackity has dreams of attending a law program in a walled city out West. Desperate to pay for expenses during his next semester at ManbergU, he accepts a TA position with his former professor. It's Quackity's last chance to get out of Manberg. It's his worst mistake. [Book 1 COMPLETE, chapters 1-32. Book 2 chapters 33- TBD.]
Author: Apocynaceae
Note from Submitter: this is the single best college AU I have ever read in my life, and I've read a lot of college AUs. there's ghost possession. there's bad sexual decision-making. there's time travel. there's snarls with student housing. there's nonconsensual drug use. there's sorta-dates in an abandoned baseball diamond. there's a genuinely poignant backstory based on quackity's toontown streams. there's parallel dimensions. there's the SCP foundation. there is, and I cannot stress this enough, midterm drama.

#2203 - Gomphocarpus physocarpus - Balloonplant
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA as balloon cotton-bush, swan plant, and nailhead. Two other common names are Hairy Balls and Bishop's Balls. Guess why.
Tumblr media
It and the closely related Narrow-leaf Cotton Bush Gomphocarpus fruticosus are native to South Africa, but are now long-established weeds in Australa and New Zealand, where they are important hostplants for the Monarch or Wanderer Butterfly Danaus plexippus. Note the young caterpillar on one of the flowers in the first photo.

Huernia thuretii
Huernia is one of many genera in the large grouping of succulents known as stapeliads. These plants generally have clusters of cylindrical stems (often knobbly, as seen here) and wonderful starfish-like five-pointed flowers. Lots of them emit unpleasant smells in order to attract flies as pollinators, and this has given them the nickname of 'carrion flowers'. Huernia thuretii is a small species from South Africa's Eastern Cape Province, and the form pictured has very pale yellow flowers with bands of purple (we also have a different form with no purple markings).

/rp Fanart for the incredible fic greener grasses by Apocynaceae. This fic is a certifiied epic. I would describe it as: a dark Schlatt/Quackity modern-fantasy university AU... with post-apocalyptic elements... that slow-burn takes a nose-dive into being much bigger and weirder than that. You may notice the "SCP-inspired AU" tag on the fic; that's what caught my attention. The SCP inspiration is later in the fic and more conceptual and deep-cut than I was expecting; it's not the parts of SCP I expect to see in an SCP AU.
The pacing is masterful. The worldbuilding is also masterful. You know how a lot of weird-premise AUs seem like they're only maybe inspired by the source material but are kind of a platform for just writing a different fantasy story entirely? This isn't. Or, like, it could have chosen to be, the author clearly made up this intense and inspired magic system/worldbuilding for this fic and could have applied it to another story; but they didn't, and goddamn. Anyway, read this fic. (Do heed the tags.) Art is a rare tender moment from Book 2 of Schlatt braiding Quackity's hair while getting him to take a break from painting to eat a sandwich. Lord knows I'm a fluff enjoyer in general, but I cannot describe how broadly non-tender this fic is. it is dark and deeply weird. This scene is like fuckin 500,000 words in. and I like fluff at any point but like that far into this kind of story, the cheese sandwiches and the fact that Q paints for fun hit different. Do you know what I mean? It's a Total Eclipse by Annie Dillard kind of vibe.
