Listed: Immaterial Possession

Immaterial Possession puts the viscerality of bass-driven rock, the hypnotic drone of East European folk and the dippy energy of art punk into a blender lets it whirr.  The Athens, Georgia band—comprised of Cooper Holmes, Madeline Polites, John Spiegel and Elephant 6 scion Kiran Fernandes—met at an arts commune.  Their self-titled debut came out in 2020, and the follow-up, Mercy of the Crane Folk, this year. Reviewing it, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “If you’ve ever wondered what the B-52s might sound like on a serious Incredible String Band bender, well, possibly a lot like Mercy of the Crane Folk.”

Selda “Gitme”

Selda is the queen, a 1970s Turkish songwriter, political activist and cultural icon. This song has such great energy. You immediately blast off on the Turkish spaceship to the cosmic love song.. the desperation in Selda's powerful voice steers you.  (Madeline)

The Stranglers, “Hanging Around”

Love this track and whole record Rattus Norvegicus for its up-front, guttural driving bass lines and menacing vocals. The keyboard runs ascending into the air counter the low earthiness. The record cover is also a perfect fit for the music, classy yet dingy, calm but aggressive, mysterious but mundane. (Cooper)

Isaan style street music from Bangkok 

Isaan music from Northeastern Thailand is some of the coolest music ever.. it's got the perfect blend of psychedelia, folk, improvisation, and party rhythm. And it's for all occasions. (Madeline)

The players are effortlessly cool too. Almost anything we find in this genre gets us going. (Cooper)

Bizunesh Bekele, “Debdabe Lakibign”

This video is one of my favorite tracks lately. I love the shuffle beat with the overdriven krar, a six-stringed harp, and the sweet synth licks mixed with the vocal. (Kiran Fernandes)

Hany Mehannah, “Shahr Al Assal”

Super groovy 1970s Egyptian music, scored for film. This is one of my faves from Hany Mehanna, a wonderful composer and keyboardist. His flourishing expressiveness of the Farfisa organ is a great influence on my organ playing in Immaterial. (Kiran)

The B52s, “Give Me Back My Man”

A big favorite from the B-52s catalogue. Cindy Wilson's vocals are so raw and glorious.. her swing from chill to scream is a cathartic explosion. And the beat and bass line is everlasting in electric spirit.  I listen to this one when I need a jump. It’s also a favorite karaoke number. (Madeline)

Buffy Sainte-Marie, “God Is Alive Magick Is Afoot”

A friend shared this with us after one of our shows. Buffy Sainte-Marie is a radical badass woman. It's “experimental” (as implied by a traditional pop sense) in the way that you are partaking in her hypnotic spell work. Just found out Leonard Cohen wrote the lyrics. That explains my gravitation to this one; Cohen is a favorite lyricist. (Madeline)

Barış Manço, “Dere Boyu Kavaklar”

Another groovy 1970s Turkish funk master. That mustache is its own instrument. I sit patiently, although in starving anticipation, for that delicious lead riff.. for that, we'll go to wherever he's luring us..(Madeline)

Aphrodites Child, “End of the World”

A 1968 Grecian epic banger. Appropriately, in the Greek mythological tradition, it's both deeply romantic and ominous in nature. Very incredible, shapeshifting vocals. Sometimes the visions of the werewolf come into my head with this one. Other times, it just feels like an apocalyptic fury of love. You could probably use this song as an easy Rorschach-ian test to see what's going on in your brain today. (Madeline)

The Bats, “Smoking Her Wings”

A friend put this on a mix tape. I love this sweet song! A driving tune with a perfectly soft and floating nostalgic melody. When I listen, I feel like I am falling in love in the summer of 1987 and want to cry over something yet I know not exactly what. (Madeline)

Velly Joonas, “Stopp, Seisku Aeg!”

A 1970s Estonian songwriter and artist. This funkadelic, melancholic, song has got a viola(?) line that cuts through like you're swimming up to the shimmering surface of the Baltic sea to take a breath. I love the rhythm in the vocal lines. I've listened to this song on repeat many times. Thank you Velly! (Madeline)

~ synopsis : your mom likes to play pranks on the partners of her kids , this including you and percy - based on this post !

When Percy and you first got together, after your first kiss, you decided you needed to tell him something.

"Percy--" You stuttered, him nipping at your lip. He looked up to face you.

"Hm?" You hesitated, unsure how to explain the situation to him.

"... I need to tell you something," You muttered nervously. Percy looked at you, concerned.

"What's up?"

"Uh, promise not to freak out," He nodded, growing more concerned. "Well, uh, so you know I'm a child of Aphrodite..." You started. Percy nodded.

"Yup. That's probably how you got me," He teased, trying to lighten the mood. You rolled you eyes.

"Focus, Perseus. Now, I need to tell you beforehand, she really likes to play jokes on people that date her kids."

"Jokes... like how?" Percy asked. "They can't be that bad, right?"

"Well, it depends. They can be as simple as candy hearts always under their pillow, to having vibrators in their jacket pockets..." You blushed, looking away from Percy. He seemed to flush too.

"How long does this curse usually last?"

"About a month, I promise." Percy nodded, kissing you again. "I can last a month for you."

Turns out Percy's curse was on the worse side.

You were sitting in the cabin, fidgeting with some decor in the room, when Percy rushed into the room.

"Oh!"

Percy was out of breath, exhausted. He heaved, trying to stutter out words.

"Fuck your mom! She must not like that I'm a child of the big three," He groaned. You blushed, noticing something off about him. First of all, his voice. His voice had a really hot accent and it set something off in you. His hair was fluffy and clean, his clothes without a single wrinkle.

"Percy...?" You muttered, walking over to him. He looked up, frowning.

"I've been talking like this all day! And..." He reached in his pocket, a handful of condoms being pulled out. "I keep getting these! I've been donating them to Will for his sex ed classes, but I can't do this for a month," He whined. He runs to hug you, clutching you like a child. You card your fingers through his hair, feeling a little bad.

"I'm sorry Perce," You sigh, kissing his hair as he sighs into your shirt. He looks up at you.

"I don't like your mom." He whines. You worry a little, knowing that the Gods usually took this to heart, especially with Percy Jackson. You kiss his hair again, hushing him.

"I love you," You offer. He snickers.

"Love you." He looks up and kisses your lips, sighing. "You know what, I don't care."

"You're worth a month of dumb pranks."

most people always thought aphrodite kids didn't care about anything but their looks

percy knows they're wrong

some of your siblings do indeed care a lot about their looks

but not you

and you're surprisingly good with a sword

percy is the one who taught you

he had always been drawn to you and he never knew why

after you got together you told him it's natural for people to gravitate towards aphrodite kids

it's why your cabin is always packed with kids from other cabins

they're just there to hang out

because love is a strong emotion, you have the ability to calm others or heighten their emotions

percy always comes to you if he's stressed or anxious

you always calm him down

either by telling him stories or listening to him tell you about his day

your favorite way to relax is to play with percy's hair

you either run your hands through it

or make tiny braids in it

it's not long enough for you to fully braid it but you like the small braids

one day percy asked you if you could teach him how to braid

ever since you'd be sitting somewhere

just talking to your siblings

and percy would come up to you

and braid your hair

your siblings love percy, especially when he braids your hair

when you need a break from your hectic cabin, you go to percy's

sometimes he's there and sometimes he isn't

his heart melts if he finds you asleep in his bed

even though you swear you don't wear that much perfume, some of it always lingers in percy's cabin

he loves it

asks you to go shopping with him

you ask him if he can train you more so you can become better at swordfighting

in turn, you teach your siblings

some of them were excited about it but most of them weren't

but you convince them and after other cabins see you they want you on your team for capture the flag and other games

percy just smiles as he sees the other cabins fighting over the aphrodite cabin for a different reason than usual

sometimes he still can't believe you said yes when he asked you out

As Danny and phantom walk ( or well float in Danny’s case ) through the keep to one of the more used drawing room where Pariah dark and Clockwork were waiting for them to arrive they would have been here earlier if Phantom didn’t drag his feet when getting ready to leave their lair and the actual getting here

“My love, Why don’t we just return back home and sleep for the rest of the day” Phantom ask to Danny in a almost pathetic voice but Danny retorts “No this is the third time you tried to get out of meeting my parents Phantom.” And that’s when Phantom knew he was in trouble

“But my Love-“ “No we are going to visit my fathers no let’s go” Danny says in a tone with little to no room for arguing

So as they walk ( float ) to the drawing room Phantom looks like a kicked puppy a few moments later they are in front of the door when Phantom goes to say something but he is interrupted by the door opening and Danny floating in and saying hello to Pariah Dark and going to sit next to Clockwork and start talking about random things

Due to there jobs as Ancients and the Ghost King it doesn’t leave much time for them to meet together like this to often and with Phantom trying not to visit them often

As Danny and Clockwork talk Pariah Dark and Phantom immediately start to bicker the other and start to quietly fight with the other while looking back at their lovers from time to time to make sure they don’t see them until a few minutes later Phantom and Pariah Dark start to fist-fight

And back to Danny and Clockwork they just talk about how funny their lovers are with soft smiles and got back to talking about flowers.

Children of Aphrodite, Poseidon and Ares are either hot, gorgeous or sexy. (Or all of the above). I don’t make the rules.

Children of Aphrodite have the type of beauty you never forget. You’ll remember it and start to fantasise about them, until you realise you can’t quite remember the colour of their eyes or the quite shade of their hair. But you just know they’re extremely beautiful. Gummy smiles here and there. Their voices are attractive, no matter the volume that they might speak. Features that they have are beautiful no matter what size. People that felt insecure of something specific like freckles, change their minds when they see a child of Aphrodite that has them—because it looks so wonderful on them that they can’t help but admire it.

Children of Poseidon have the rebellious type of beauty where you know or think they’re a trouble maker. Anything looks good on them, especially piercings. It’s the type of face which would make you blush upon making eye contact with them. Or the type of beauty where you’ll think, “wow.” They look like Roman gods. Too bad most of them never realise it, not even when they have a lover. (Cough cough..Percy).

Children of Ares have the type of looks that make your whole entire body hot and makes your brain stop working for a couple of seconds after first meeting them. It’s the type of beauty where you’ll stutter or start to mumble underneath their fiery gaze and the intense atmosphere that surrounds them. You feel somewhat intimidated but that intrigues you and pulls you in. There’s a reason why Aphrodite was attracted to Ares y’know. It’s the type of thing where you’ll wonder, “who is he” “what’s her name?”. While children of Poseidon look like Roman gods, children of Ares full-on look like Greek gods. Most of the have sculpted features on their bodies or faces. They have attractive arms, not necessarily muscular but when you watch their arms move you can help but be attracted to have pleasing they look. They have smiles that are somewhat crooked but mostly it seems like a challenge, like “hah..? What did you say?” Or “*..you think you can hurt me?”, “what the hell was that, can’t you do better than that?”.

Werner Schuch (1843-1918), 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse', 1910 I'm posting this piece of art as an excuse to reference the Greek rock band Aphrodite's Child's album, 666 (considered by many to be a progressive/psychedelic rock classic). It was the band's third and final album released in 1972 and their only double LP. "The central concept is a countercultural interpretation of the Book of Revelation, in which a circus show based on the apocalypse performs for an audience at the same time that the real apocalypse takes place outside the circus tent, and at the end the two merge into one." The song I wanted to share was the 4th song on side one of the LP, 'The Four Horsemen'. It's a song that's been waiting to end up on a mix that I've yet to make. Note: this was one Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou's (aka Vangelis) bands that he helped form back in 1967 at the age of 25.
