Countries' jobs and skills
WARNING: Some of the names mantioned are the same as the names of historical figures. The plots are not about the real people, but about the nations. To make things easier and have names that make sense for the nations some names match with real people, but it's not about them. In my bio I also have this warning, but I will keep putting it just in case.
In my last post, I gave my opinion on the proto-bulgarian calendar (which was that at the very least it wasn't recognized by UNESCO).
With that in mind, I still think that it would be interesting to see Nikolay (Bulgaria)'s father (Old Great Bulgaria) explaining physics and astrophysics to him.
My plots regarding the countries' interests are (for the most part) not based on a common interest within a nation or something that it is known for or has a lot of achievements in.
/Especially considering the fact that proto-bulgarians had (as many nations back in the day) their religion explaining astronomy (again I am not a historian so don't quote me on this) for example when they go to a battle and the moon gets smaller they thought that it meant that they were going to lose even if they had an advantage/
In my plots when the dead nations come back they are given the modernized knowledge of the things they knew, were good at or used constantly.
That's why, for example Rumen (East Rumelia) and Kotrag (Volga Bulgaria) are doctors even in the modern world and have the knowledge of today's family doctors (both of them are family doctors).
As I said, in my plots Old Great Bulgaria is good at physics. He is also a retired army general /proto-bulgarians had amazing battle tactics, because of which they won so many battles against such strong enemies/. He also as the Great Khan of Old Gread Bulgaria has a lot general knowledge in many fields. Even though he isn't a master in many of them, the amount of knowledge he has is the reason for his sons to go to him first whenever they need help.
Bayan is a police officer,
Kuber is a softuare engineer and Alcek is a singer/actor.
Nikolay's mother (she is also the mother of the rest of the south slavs and had raised Nikolay's brothers that she isn't biologically connected to /if you have any names (human and for her as a nation/group) please tell me/) is also a retired soldier. In Old Great Bulgaria the women were protecting the cities while the men were away and I think that she would also be a general /and be able to kick Old Great Bulgaria's ass (even though she never had a reason to, but that's for another post)/

it's sometime in the second half of the 10th century. volga bulgaria is soundly asleep under heavy covers that keep him warm during the freezing winter night. suddenly, a whisper to his ear awakens him.
'hey! hey! son, wake up!'
volga bulgaria suddenly opens his eyes only to stare at the phosphorescent figure standing besides his bed.
'dad... is this you? how is it possible?' volga bulgaria tears up. 'I-I thought you were dead... please... don't be a dream or a demon who's tricking me'
'it's me son, I'm a ghost. btw merry christmas, this is what I came for, to wish u a merry christmas' he says, oblivious to his son being overwhelmed with emotions
'um- what?'
old great bulgaria looks around the room.
'uuuh... I meant...'
then he looks through the window and manages to make out the outlines of several minarets against the night sky and the snow.
'...oh sh*t. wrong kid. welp. I'll come visit u for eid al-fitr if I don't forget. sorry for waking u up. I'd tuck u in bed but I can't interact with physical matter so u tuck urself. now, I gotta go wish ur brother a merry christmas'
with these words, old great bulgaria disappears.
'of course' volga bulgaria mutters, tears streaming down his cheeks 'it's always my brother'
that night, volga bulgaria cried himself to sleep

y’know, I’ve always wondered something about aph bulgaria
like
when was he born? was he born in the 7th century, or was he born in the 9th-10th century when slavs and bulgars mixed? does he look like the bulgars? or like modern-day bulgarians?
1. was he born during the 7th century? if so, old great bulgaria would be his father, volga bulgaria would be his brother. did he speak bulgar language, did he use to live in a yurt, did he use to praise tangra? did he forget his original language, did he start speaking slavic as bulgars got assimilated by the slavs, thus becoming a slav?
2. or was he born from the union of bulgars and slavs in the 9th-10th century? then, he’d be a slav & a christian throughout his entire life. perhaps there was another representative/avatar of the bulgar khaganate on the danube before him who was the descendant of old great bulgaria and who is also his parent (the avatar of a slavic tribe would be his other parent), this would make old great bulgaria his grandpa and volga bulgaria his uncle
3. or was he a random slav who simply inherited the name bulgaria from the original representative/avatar of the bulgar khaganate who’s also the descendant of old great bulgaria? then, he wouldn’t biologically descend from the bulgar family, he’d only have some sort of a spiritual connection (like being adoptive) which kinda makes sense if you look at genetics (bulgars were eurasian nomads while modern-day bulgarians are europeans with ~2% asian ancestry, >40% of bulgarian ancestry is slavic and >40% is balkan, bulgars weren’t numerous, their language disappeared, leaving not more than a dozen of words in modern bulgarian, there are barely any traces of their culture)
4. or he popped out of nothing once the bulgarian ethnicity appeared after all the slavs and the bulgars had mixed, like he has no biological mom or dad
if theory 1. is correct, then wouldn’t bulgaria stand out among today’s bulgarians? will he feel like a foreigner in his own country whenever he remembers his childhood? or maybe he’s forgotten ever being bulgar
if 2, 3 or 4 is correct, then he wouldn’t stand out and wouldn’t feel like that

oh here’s another idea i’ve got that i can totally see happening in hetalia
you know, there’s a holiday in russia, in the volga-ural area, that’s called sabantuy. it apparently dates back to the times when volga bulgaria still existed. various types of games are played there and one of them is a game where you have to take a coin out of a bowl filled with qatiq (a fermented milk product similar to yogurt) without using your hands. which means you have to dip your face in the bowl and use your mouth to find the coin and take it out.
in medieval times, volga bulgaria and the rus’ principalities were often raiding each other / in war with each other, but there were times where they’d trade with each other and help each other (such as volga bulgaria sending them wheat when there was hunger in the rus’ principalities)
so maybe in hetalia, volga bulgaria and russia were something like childhood friends? that’d fight sometimes? but then still be good friends?
now, for what i’m imagining:
volga bulgaria has invited russia to sabantuy so they can celebrate together and he shows him various fun stuff around
v. bulgaria: now this is a bowl of qatiq, here’s a coin, you have to take it out of the bowl using your mouth, here, let me show you how *dips face into the bowl*
russia: woah sounds fun i’ll help you find it : ) *pushes v. bulgaria’s head deeper into the bowl*
v. bulgaria: *begins shifting and squirming*
russia: oh did you find it? seems like you haven’t yet *keeps on pressing on his head*
v. bulgaria begins to struggle more and more as he can’t take a breath. soon, he starts thrashing desperately. as a last resort, he grabs onto russia’s wrists, attempting to pull them away from his head, but to no avail.
russia: oh you must’ve found it *stops pressing v. bulgaria’s head into the bowl*
he’s too late though. v. bulgaria suddenly stops moving, his body going limp
russia: *pulls him away from the bowl* awww you didn’t find it... *prepares to dip his face into the bowl again, but suddenly stops*
russia: friend? are you upset at me? why aren’t you talking to me? sorry if i’ve said something that has offended you
russia: aww you must be really tired, falling asleep like that. or is finding a coin in qatiq much more tiresome than it looks? let’s move you over there so you can get some sleep : )
#hetalia#aph russia#hws russia#does volga bulgaria have a hetalia tag?#i think not#but cmon i can totally imagine russia doing that

y’know how aph bulgaria is a smug cheeky lil shit
imagine if there were two of them
for real though
there were two bulgarias in medieval times
one on the danube (the one you know) and one on the volga
they were founded by two brothers who were sons of the ruler of old great bulgaria, old great bulgaria got attacked by khazars and thousands of bulgars migrated under the rule of different sons
some of the bulgars stayed where old great bulgaria was, accepting khazar supremacy, some migrated to the middle volga, others - to the lower danube, there were some that settled in pannonia who later moved south to where modern day macedonia is, some even went to italy
the ones on the volga and on the danube created their own states
just imagine
two smug nerds who are actually pretty tough, prosperous and popular
I wonder if they’d compete with each other and try to outsmug each other
or what if volga bulgaria was the only one who could outsmug danube bulgaria
I’d love to see it
anyways, the volga one got overrun by mongols in the 1230s
maybe that was the end of it
maybe it has descendants?
or maybe it survived the mongol invasion?
idk how that would be in hetalia but still the topic seems interesting to me
