I think the Hetalia Fandom doesn't appreciate Turkey as much as it should. He is a hot daddy who makes daddy jokes and likes to cook and be fashionable, how that's not cool??
Also his Ottoman Empire era. My man literally killed the Roman Empire (this whole shit about the Byzantine Empire is so weird! They were called the Roman Empire still, call it by its actual name!) and just declared to be the continuation of Rome. Like that's so fucking cool and the empire survived for so long. Of course in the end things didn't go well, but still there's so much history that we could be exploring!
That's my hyperfixation moment, thank you. I hope you all read this imagining someone speaking hysterically while intensely gesturing with their hands, because that's my energy right now.

Hello!! I know I JUST followed you and I’m still working on this blog, but I’d LOVE to hear you “yapping” more about the Netherlands and Turkiye / Ottoman Empire!! ( I also actually enjoy them as a ship, 👀 but it’s a hard life, that. 😞)
You've activated my trap card! Nothing I love more as a history student and Hetalia enjoyer than talking about a ship I like with historical basis 😌😌
There's quite a lot of material on the relations between the NL, or back then the Dutch Republic and the Ottoman Empire/Turkey, so I'll give a short review of my thoughts until I do an actual deep dive with screenshots of sources (and probably draw them)(Thanks Alexander H. De Groot for publishing an entire book about it)!
Officially, the relations between the Dutch and the Ottomans started in 1612, with them establishing diplomatic relations with each other in the wake of the 80 years war when the Dutch fought against the Spanish. Of course, their relations go much further back than that though! Dutch merchants in the Levant (incredibly important location!), pilgrims, diplomats, travellers, artisans - they all have visited the Ottoman empire in the centuries before to exchange knowledge, goods, etc. The mercantile relations between the Dutch and the Ottomans were also the most important! Again, there is a lot of information on these trade relations, so that'll have to do for another post. The Dutch trade in the Levant, especially after official relations were established, grew enormously (perhaps even larger than the Venetian and English trade there) - especially in the time of the 12 Years Truce (1609-1621) when the Dutch had time to expand their network.
Another important reason for Dutch-Ottoman relations was the common enemy Spain, whom proved to be a real pain in the ass for both of them. Unofficially, the Ottomans had been supporting the Dutch rebels since the start of the 80 Years War in the 1560s. Partially because the Ottomans were so powerful, the Dutch were the ones to first seek out official relations in the 1600s, which led to the earlier mentioned diplomatic agreement in 1612. After the end of the 80 Years War, in 1648, the relations between the Dutch and the Ottomans only increased more and more intensely.
So now back to the actual personifications - I think that these close ties in the middle ages and especially the 17th/18th century really give us a lot to work with (forgive me for not yet going into the later centuries, my specialty lies more in the renaissance age and classical times!). My interpretation of Ned in the medieval and early renaissance times goes like this: he was under mentorship of Holland and did a lot of tasks for him, such as trade and establishing relations with other personifications, when Holland was busy with other things. So Ned would've probably been in the Ottoman empire quite a few times when he was younger in the 16th and 15th centuries at least. From these visitations Turkey and Ned would've known each other. I think they'd be curious - Turkey is older and more experienced in life, yet he is intensely curious of the world around him. Ned would've gladly exhanged stories and knowledge of his home and time in other Western/Northern European nations. They both have a similar mind for trade and commercialism, yet can also appreciate the arts and of course, flowers (tulip twins lets go!). Ned was quite a charming fellow back in the day before he became quite cold and stand offish in the later 18th, 19th century, so Turkey might've been charmed or at least bemused by him. Once tensions between Spain and the Dutch provinces began to rise, and war came on the horizon, Ned and Turkey would have something new to bond over : their shared distaste of Spain. Although Spain, in my headcanon, doesn't often visit the Dutch provinces bc they are so independent, Ned probably got most of his info about him from Holland and other provinces, who all are *not* fond of anyone policing them. I also like to imagine Turkey comforting Ned during the 80 Years War, because for a very long time the Dutch rebels suffered a *lot* of defeat and setbacks against the Spanish. The Ottoman's support would've definitely helped. Skipping over quite a bit of potential growth and relations, in the later 17th century Ned and Turkey would be a bit more on the same power level, in the way that Ned was now one of the (if not the) richest nations in the world. But I imagine they'd still fall back on old habits like gossiping and shopping for pretty works of art or furniture. These two would probably also enjoy diving into works of literature from other languages and times long gone together. Although they might not see each other much, as both are intensely busy men, the time spend together would be incredibly precies and they'd definitely make the most of it. Ned would definitely consider Turkey a close companion if nothing more.
Hope I didn't yap too much hahahah, feel free to ask more or share your own ideas, I love these two!!! 🥹🥹🥹

ottoman times. teen bulgaria is sitting on some glade and picking his nose with a dull gaze.
teen turkey appears. bulgaria doesn't even look at him.
'yo what's up loser I'm so much stronger and better than u I defeated u and now ur a part of my empire'
bulgaria ignores him, staring into nothingness. he keeps on picking his nose.
'also I'm much more handsome than u everyone likes me'
bulgaria pulls his finger out of his nostril and flicks a booger away. then he sticks his finger into his other nostril. it seems like he cares a lot more about his boogers than whatever turkey's telling him.
'also I'm richer than u and I'm allowed to wear the most expensive and awesome clothes look at my clothes they are made out of brocade'
bulgaria, unimpressed, pulls his finger out of his nose again. finally, he speaks.
'so what? I'm spiritually rich'

All these anons just make me want to talk about Turkey more. What are your favorite Turkey headcanons? Personally I love to think that Sadik writes poetry in his spare time, and is very, very good at it.
As someone who ships Turkfra because of how fascinating the history between France and the Ottoman Empire is (Franco-Ottoman alliance) I like to think that they would both really bond over each other’s rich poetry culture. Not to mention their rich cuisines. Maybe they cook together in the evenings, or take turns cooking and surprising each other with elaborate dinners.
Youre so right
aph turkey hcs
- physically he's around 180cm, perhaps he had visible muscles during the ottoman empire period but he's mellowed out now and let a little softness take over his form. He put on a little bit of weight bc he's a sweet tooth but it fluctuates from time to time.
- definitely keeps cat treats in his pocket for the stray cats of istanbul!! and when he fishes he leaves a portion for the cats to eat!
- while he is a cat person and owns cats(one of them is named tombili 🥺), he also owns a few dogs too! he probably gets along with germany on that part(maybe korea? though korea owns the cute fluffy tiny dogs that feel the need to eat your face off when it makes eye contact with you).
- is a man of the kitchen. aside from cooking the most banger meals, he dabbles in tweaking recipes or creating new ones altogether! ive seen enough turkish dessert accounts on instagram to know he'd make a bomber cake with coconut shavings, or a pretty good custard.
- the coconut shavings are important btw they're like on every single homemade turkish chocolate cake for some reason??(source: baby tokki grew up with a lot of turkish family friends)
- sorry i have to do this but...he has mediocre drip 🥲 sometimes he dresses like your average old man or middle aged dad and then sometimes it's so obvious that he's trying to dress like the youngsters.. he def has his knockoff Adidas tracksuits and they always come in clutch
- he's not an old man however. he was born as one of the many tribes running around in the seljuk era before he eventually became the ottoman empire. physically...around his mid 20s to early 30s?
- and cuz he has turkish dad vibes...he regularly watches soccer games. like he lays down on the couch elbow propped up eating pistachios as he watches soccer in a Galatasaray shirt(actually turkish fans of hetalia pls tell me who hed be a fan of bc I don't regularly watch turkish soccer)
- regularly plays volleyball!
- life of the party at weddings tbh, especially those rural ones
- very hospitable! he'll arrange a table full of treats and black tea for you and won't take no for an answer as he brags about how hospitable he is.
- when you're at his house DO NOT EVER suggest getting takeout. he will stare at you with a >:0 face
- WILL spill the tea over tea. man's got enough connections to tell you abt who's cheating on who etc. while he has his whole spread of treats and black tea out he'll keep you up on everything. when he goes "Ok so basically" that's when you brace yourself because OH BOY is someone in a secret relationship with someone else and that person you'd always assumed was super shy actually sprinkled salt on their ex's backyard
- the ac in his istanbul apartment keeps breaking(good luck with that man 😔)
- that's why in the summer he spends a big chunk of his paycheck on icecream. bro makes sure to always have icecream stocked on him at all times(just like me fr !!). he'd even eat it in the winter he loves it that much.
- also at the same time he drinks hot tea in the 40-50 degree summer as well, another win for the turkuzbek fans !
- big into architecture, and back in the day it was custom to write a poem to commemorate a new building. he definitely wrote a few but spent forever thinking about how to write it and pissed a lot of people off because they were waiting for the poem lol
- i actually really like fraturk's dynamic! because theyve got a lot of history together, it would be terrible to ignore. i think they have definitely gotten together during the Franco-Ottoman alliance lol.
- one time the french wanted to flex on austria × spain by going "oh yeah??? well we got turkey!!" and commissioned a huge super ornate crown to gift to suleiman the great. see the funny part about this is um. the turks didn't wear crowns. so suleiman never wore it lol
turkey, holding the crown: uhmmmm... wall decoration I guess?? this is awkward
- the name "turquoise" comes from the French "turkish" to describe the gem. i guess that's a fraturk win??? since we all associate that color with turkey now
- they'd probably try to one up each other with the dinners they cook! (can france handle lahmacun??? tune in later today at 11pm to find out !!)
- coffee guy x tea guy with the whole parisian coffee culture and turkish tea culture thing. (except I mean. turkish coffee also exists so)
- I wanna think france tries to help turkey with his drip situation but. turkey always got that inner middle aged dad in him it's not going anywhere
- bulgaria likes going to turkeys place cuz the stuff there is dirt cheap ~~~~!!! rip the lira you would have loved economic stability
- speaking of bulgaria, bulgaria greece and turkey argue a lot over who invented yogurt. turkey thinks he's got a stake in it because of the etymology of yogurt(yoğurtmak), but like the bacteria to make yogurt is called lactobacillius bulgaricus, but everyone thinks of greek yogurt...yeah you can see why they're all arguing
- speaking of arguing he's ratioed saudi a couple times on twitter lol
- he also posts those ironic turk/turan copy pastas as well
- egypt kinda doesn't like him. during the ottoman empire turkey launched egypt to suppress arab revolts like a pokemon.
*putting down fingers* "the greeks don't like us, egypt doesn't like us, saudi definitely doesn't like us....bulgaria likes us cuz we're a cheap travel destination for them..." - my turkish business teacher in highschool, 2023
- gets along well with korea(uhoh BIAS incoming !!!) due to their history beginning from the korean war. the turkish brigade was the only military unit that built a school for korean orphans. there's a story of a soldier taking care of a korean orphan, but he wasn't able to adopt her. they were separated for years after that until one day they reunited. they'd also suffered the third most losses in the war. that's why we call turkey our "older brother country."
- there's even a turkish culture center in seoul(which baby tokki went to a lot lol). recently turkish kaymak has been trending since one of the top korean celebrity chefs paik joongwon visited turkey a while back to try food. people have been traveling to turkey to go to the exact stores and try those foods as well. there's a lot of kebab shops in korea! the turkish presence in korea was the starting point to accommodate muslims in korea as well.
- all of this to say korea and turkey have a mutual admiration and korea definitely calls turkey oppa or hyung. korea also tries to get him to change his drip but NOTHJNG CAN DEFEAT THE STEADFAST TURKISH MIDDLE AGED MAN RAAAH 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
- I've said it before I'll say it again: turkey cannot hold a normal conversation with mongolia because he'll always go "OH MY FELLOW NOMAD STEPPE ALTAIC BROTHER HOW ARE YOU DOING!!!" what???
- same with the central asians tbh given their nomadic history as well. he was the first nation to recognize all of their indepences fom russia. he gets along with turkmenistan a lot because they're the closest languages to each other(both in oghuz family) and a lot of turkmens go to turkey to study at their universities! the governments quite stagnant with their policies however, so turkey's having a hard time convincing her to join the turkic council as a full time member. they give me a gojo and megumi vibe for some reason lol
- kazakhstan 🤝 turkey: both having the asian/european identity crisis
- in terms of first meetings, the kazakh khanate and ottoman empire first established diplomatic relations in 1713, and along with uzbekistan, tried to seek turkey's help in the face of an expanding russian empire.
- nowadays, turkey and kazakhstan are the ones to both try to stir up that regional/turkic unity among the central asians. they've gained some small wins along the way lol. in fact, turkey, kazakhstan, and kyrgyzstan were the founding members of the turkic council! kazakhstan admires all that turkey's doing for them but sometimes thinks he's too cocky. actually all the central asians think he's cocky to certain extents lol
- bro gets along a little better with hungary now and that could be because of the whole "huns=turkic?" debate resurfacing in hungary which is why they somehow landed a spot in the turkic council as well???
uzb kaz kyrg turk azer @ hungary: white woman jumpscare,
- he and hungary regularly bother prussia whenever they're in germany lol
- scraps w the netherlands bc tulips come from him!!! not from Licorice Man!!!!!
- fluctuating relationship with iran over the years
- was a fanboy of iran during the seljuk empire until she joined the khwarazmian empire(uzb's mom lol) and then he hated her
- also close with: azerbaijan(who may or may not be his number one fanboy), japan
Here's everything I could squeeze out of my brain lol hope you like it!!
a good chunk of these hcs are by @peonycats and @hetalia-fannn btw!! sorry for not initially crediting u guys i forgot 😭

APH Russia – Headcanons I
Tumblr media
I would like to point out that I originally wrote this before 24.02.2022 and didn’t publish this until now due to current event. Now I have decided just to go ahead these are low-budget anime characters that I’m talking about and f anybody who links this to ongoing geopolitical events
Is surprisingly proficient in German and French. Both were court languages of his at the one or the other point in history, his German also being spread amongst the wider populace and influencing Russian. Speaks both languages with a bit of an accent, yet if he puts enough effort in it, his accent can be nearly untraceable.
As for other languages – he is also fluent in Tatar and Mongolian, although in the later he is far better with speaking and listening than writing. This is also the case with all the other languages spoken in his territory. This is due to his past under the khans. As for English and Chinese – with both he tends to be on the very formal side, with his speech precise and usually devoid of slang and abbreviations. It is because he learned much of those two languages from literature or also scientific reports.
When it comes to Russian he can be very eloquent, having a preference for puns and other plays of words. Can and will criticise others for their grammar, although if he is public and in a formal setting, he would be more tactful and quiet about remarking it.
Has a penchant for literature and opera and plays. Visits the theatre regularly and knows all the ballets by heart. Personally keeps a small notebook where he critiques and rates books and performances. Sometimes he sends them in to a newspaper or an online site.
Writes poety in his free time and sends some of them to his sisters or humans that are close to him at the time. Can also recite all of Pushkin’s poems in his sleep.
Aside from that, he has a love for fairy tales. Not the sanitised, censored versions that Disney and the Grimm brother’s have made so popular, rather the cautionary tales as they were actually intended, The brutal versions where people suffer and suffer and suffer.
Else has written multiple essays and the human condition, often taking characters for classics to elaborate on his points. These are texts that near nobody has seen. Ivan has split them up and hidden them on his various properties.
Tumblr media
Has taken formal dance lessons in ballet and the classics. Loves to dance at balls and is surprisingly elegant while doing so for somebody his size. However, he really shies away from dancing tango, salsa and other dances where both partners get really close and even handsy with each other. If at all, he would have to be really close to his dance partner to even contemplate to doing the Latin American dances.
Other than that, he is also good when it comes to folk dances and possess enough stamina to dance dances such as the Barynya for hours. Has the appropriate leg muscles and flexibility.
Surprisingly, (or not) his dancing skills translate into his fighting style. Can go on for hours without taking any enhancements or sleeping, all while remaining smooth and precise in his movements, like they been choreographed and practised time and time again. He can make difficult movement seem easy.
For centuries he favoured combat with a sword. One of his favourite ones was a curved sabre – a kilij – that he stole as a war trophy from Turkey when the latter was the Ottoman empire. Later, he evolved to be a crack shot with the pistole – he got caught up in a lot of duels when they came into fashion. During the WWII, he was part of a tank crew. Due to the tight space of the T-34, he often suffered sore joints and cramps in his muscles. Also developed an especially thick skull during this time, both literally and metaphorically.
Ivan has participated in the making of multiple movies as an advisor. He makes sure that historical films are historically accurate. Seeing that Russia is big on war movies, Ivan has a lot to do.
Tumblr media
Additionally, he is quite a patron for the arts. He has multiple oil paintings in his old mansion. Personally, he paints either an impressionist art style or in the vividly coloured art styles that are native to Russia, such as Gzhel, Khokhloma and Zhostovo.
Adding on to that – there is nothing in his homes that is really plain. He has a sense for the aesthetically pleasing and even opulence. The woodwork is carved and whittled, the ceramic adorn with paintings and the metal work ornate. His living surroundings might have been a bit plainer during Soviet times, however I think he would have pulled a few strings that would have allowed him to keep his old possessions.

Thanks for the kind words! :D
The Ottoman Empire’s rule of Hungary takes quite a few pages in our history books and we have many hero figures from this era who are still pretty popular up to this day because they fought valiantly against the Ottoman invaders.
For example: the Hunyadi (Corvinus) family, Kinizsi Pál, the Zrínyi family, the women of Eger (during siege, it’s a famous story), Dugovics Titusz (he is just a legend though)…etc.
The Ottomans were the first great invaders who posed a real threat to Hungary and so protecting our lands has become romanticized in these centuries. Many poems, plays, books take place in this era. The most famous one is “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon” by Géza Gárdonyi.
The main problem we had with Turks was the alien culture and religion they brought with them. They managed to leave some cultural and material traces in our society and lands but the people never really accepted Turks with wide arms. On the contrary, nobles who allied with the Ottoman Empire were mostly regarded as traitors.
Ottomans were quite tolerant with our religion though, they only had us pay extra taxes. Although they built quite a few nice buildings here, the destruction they caused in villages and towns were quite numerous too. Not to mention the number of deaths.
Turkey is the reason the free part of Hungary had to rely on the Habsburgs and Austria to reclaim the taken lands. And of course Hungary lost her freedom for centuries to come after everything was said and done. So basically, we regard the Ottoman Empire as the power that took Hungary’s glory away.
But! Today our relations are entirely different. Ever since the 19th century when a theory was born that Hungarians might be related to Turkish nations, the image about Turkey has also changed in Hungary. (Said theories were never proven though.) Hungarians grew interested in Turkey and so many academics travelled there to get to know the country and its culture better. Also many emigrants sought refuge in Turkey after the Hungarian independence war.
Later on we fought on the same side in WW1 and after our losses the two were equally dissatisfied and made a friendship pact in 1923. Relations are quite stable ever since and we have many researchers on both sides who study these country’s past in the present too.
Thanks for the questions! :3

what do you think about Sadik (turkey)?
Tumblr media
During the British Raj Era, he has had a huge infatuation with the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire being the last standing Islamic Caliphate at the time, the South Asian Muslims living under the British Raj absolutely did not want it to get dissolved. As a result of that, South Asian muslims organized whatever funds they could collect in order to send them as support to the Ottoman Empire, and some soldiers refused to fight the Ottomans during the great war. This all was the basis of the start of friendly relations between Pakistan and Turkey when both of these nations gained their respective independences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turkey has largely been seen as a role-model for Pakistan :) As a result, Umer kind of looks up to Turkey with much admiration. I'd say they pretty much have a Senpai-Kouhai-ish relationship lol
