I’m convinced that one of Arthur’s many deaths as a nation was caused by him being piss drunk and jumping off the balcony of his resort during a holiday in Spain in an attempt to land in the pool.

I was thinking about the nations' healing abilities and ik they've definitely lost a limb or two in their lifetimes.

headcanon below the cut (cw: dismemberment and decomposition talk)

there's three types of injury that can befall a nation:

an attack on the actual landmass/people = long lasting injuries, wounds eventually heal but will take a long time, and can manifest as a sickness sometimes

an attack on the personification's physical body by another personification = heals relatively quick, but has long lasting effects, and permanent scars, self inflicted wounds also belong to this category

an attack on the personification's physical body by regular humans = short term injuries, no scars, no lasting effects

resurrection is a normal occurrence too, as long as a nation is a nation, they'll be fine.

dismembered country body parts tend to decompose faster than normal, so it's best to bury it or burn it to keep diseases at bay.

the acceleration of decomposition is probably because of the nations' special property that keeps living things that's in close proximity to them most of the time semi immortal, so when a limb disconnects from the body, it essentially makes up for the time it wasn't aging.

Tony and Alfred best friendism for the tragic reason that in my opinion, everyone who has ever loved Alfred has also resented him.

There's Matthew, whose deep love for Alfred comes with an equally deep resentment of the attention and supposed adoration Alfred gets. He's equally likely to punch someone for maligning his brother or be the one doing the maligning. He can't seem to stop the part of himself that loves seeing his brother brought low.

There's Arthur, whose love for Alfred comes hand in hand with his anger about Alfred's Revolution. He cares about Alfred but also takes pleasure in seeing Alfred humiliated if he can say 'it wouldn't have happened if you had never left me'.

There's Kiku, whose love for Alfred comes with baggage. Whether or not Alfred was involved with big decisions during World War II, there's the simple fact that who Alfred represents has hurt Kiku's people. Maybe they're completely over it, maybe Kiku doesn't blame Alfred, but even then, sometimes Kiku is just tired of Alfred, the differences between them not always charming.

There's Ivan, whose love could be obsession and whose obsession could be love, who looks at this Nation who never suffered like he had to and gets the urge to crush that innocence even as he wants to protect it.

Tony doesn't feel any of that towards Alfred. To him, Alfred isn't the attention he gets from others, or a singular event in time, or the differences between them, or the things he didn't suffer. He's not his government's decisions. He's the guy who helped him rebuild his spaceship, then got him so addicted to burgers and video games he eventually decided to make Earth home. He's the guy who showed him ice skating and surfing and the joys of things that aren't high tech.

Who knows, maybe Tony was an outcast in his own home planet, but I just can't help but feel a lot about the idea that Alfred, who is so affable, connects most with somebody who isn't even from the same planet as him. Never experienced an uncomplicated love until it crash lands in his country.

The (late) early medieval period was definitely one of the very rare times Francis had both short hair and no facial hair at the same time. This was also a rare time where Arthur had the privilege to rock the long hairstyle but unfortunately for Arthur, he also had to watch out for Frantic Francis, the hair-snatcher.

It’s pretty much canon that England would leave America for long stretches of time during his childhood (like in that Davie strip), but I’d like to imagine that he hired teachers and caretakers or nannies to actually raise America while he was gone most of the time.

Of course, because America ages a lot slower than a human, those nannies would get old and retire or die, and then England would have to replace them like goldfish.

Eventually America would get old enough to understand the concept of death, and England would start to get a bit careless about it, like:

England: America, where is that nanny I hired? I haven’t seen her since I’ve arrived.

America(physically around 13y/o): …England, she died like 2 years ago. You forgot to hire a new one.

England: ah.

Headcanon:

Would nations take notes or not during class?

Germany: Yes. Neat and precise notes organized by topic to make it easier to study.

Italy: No. If you asked for his notes, he’d show you a series of pretty and artist-like drawings of Germany.

Japan: Yes, but only until he notices Italy (who I’ve now decided will be his desk mate) drawing Germany. He gets inspired and starts drawing GerIta and passing his drawings to Hungary.

America: Yes, but it’s just a bunch of notes scribbled around his book, probably surrounded by doodles of himself with a hero cape.

England: Yes, but he only jots down what he finds important, the rest of the time he draws various magical creatures on a sketchbook.

France: No. He’d much rather write stuff on paper planes and send them to Spain and Prussia (who I suppose are desk mates).

Prussia: Yes, surprisingly. Like England, he only writes the important part ‘cause he’s busy writing stuff on France’s paper planes and sending them back.

Spain: No. He’s busy making paper planes and sending them to France, but his paper planes are actually empty and he only makes them to kill time. This often upsets the other two.

Romano: Yes. He’s actually very good at taking notes. If you read them, though, you would find parts where he summarized the point with something like “and then the king fucked up and lost a lot of the land”.

Hungary: No. She waits for Japan to pass her his drawings and then starts writing headcanons behind them.

These are all those which I could clearly see in my head. Sorry if I didn’t put all of the allies.

To make up for it, here’s my idea of how the classroom could look like. (Again, this is not everyone, sorry).

Imagine nations having something really embarrassing happen to them. It could result in a death or simply be a whacky dare that they are forced to do.

They go on with their life thinking "wow, sure am glad no one saw that happen!"

Only to be flipping through the channels one night, some years or even decades later, to find out an entire Unsolved Mysteries episode about it. In horror, they quickly Google it. Only to find out an entire Reddit page dedicated to it, hundreds of YouTube videos, and TikTok's with millions of views.

I love the idea of Alfred knowing every language out there because of how many different types of people live in America—and this is specifically a skill Alfred has, not every nation.

He could also use this skill for chaos, like speaking French whenever he wants to piss off England (who does know French, but you will never get him to speak it. Over his dead body).

Canada would probably forget America knows French and say an insult to him in the language under his breath, just to facepalm when Alfred easily replies with a comeback in not only French but specifically Quebec French.

America speaks only English around Ivan as a power move. He also knows that China is more receptive to him when he speaks Chinese. America somehow knowing every Chinese dialect and the intricacies of the language is the only thing China will admit as impressive about Alfred.

At world meetings when all of the languages are flying as people yell and argue, America gets overwhelmed and has to leave the room to cool off. But no one ever realizes that's why he does that.

And of course, he smiles so much when he talks to his people in their native languages and sees them brighten at being understood in their native tongue. I can also see him giving free classes on ASL and braille to help more people be able to speak with those who are deaf and blind. Probably the only languages he's still working on learning are the different forms of sign language in each country. He knows ASL but not BSL, for instance.

Alfred may be oblivious a lot of the time and also have a childish innocence to him in some ways that can affect his decision-making, but he's still smart under all of that. That's also why you see him suggesting superheroes as a solution to climate change while having archeology and astronomy as hobbies.

America has climbed the Statue of Liberty a few times. When he reaches the top, he either does backflips or throws it back for the people below. He also does whatever is the most popular dance for the time.

Canada got kidnapped by a concerned mom after she thought he was working too hard. Canada just kind of went along with it because he didn't want to make things awkward.

Spain is always caught doing dumb things on Google Street View.

Ireland gets invited to random people's weddings. Sometimes they try to have him officiate the marriage.

Australia went to the "Gathering of the Kyles" event (I think his human name is Kyle).

England is banned from the state of New Jersey.

The truth is, America is both England and France's favourite, especially after the American Revolution.

Before the American Revolution, Arthur loved Alfred, but he didn't see him as particularly valuable. After the Revolution, though, it becomes complicated, but Arthur's anger and pain means he's always aware of Alfred. Alfred is the one Arthur lost, and his emotions about Alfred are magnified in ways it never will be about anyone else. Did Arthur love Alfred the most before Alfred left him? It's hard to say, but he certainly did after Alfred left.

Francis has always liked Alfred, and he was pretty equal in his affections for both him and Matthew when they were children - though of course, he didn't see Alfred as much as Matthew. For a long time Matthew took comfort in knowing he was Francis' in a way Alfred wasn't, even though it made him feel guilty feeling that way. After the American Revolution, both of the equal affection and that special relationship are taken away from Matthew. Francis and Alfred bond - they bond over their anger at Arthur, and they bond over ideas that seem ludicrous to everyone else. Francis gifts Alfred the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of that bond, and both Arthur and Matthew have it shoved in their faces constantly. In the modern era, Francis does cooking lessons with Alfred ("in order to make sure Angleterre's terrible cooking does not infect him!") despite the fact Alfred's been an amazing cook for over a hundred years, and Alfred accompanies Francis on his shopping trips in New York even if he never buys anything.

The way Alfred sees it, of course, is that Matthew is Arthur's obedient, and therefore favoured child. Despite the strength of Arthur's feelings for him, Alfred never felt it when he was actually growing up with Arthur, and certainly not after he'd left. Matthew got to see how deeply Arthur missed and loved Alfred - Alfred didn't. And no matter what his relationship is with Francis, Alfred always thinks of the fact that Francis raised Matthew, not him. Alfred envies Matthew's place in the family, even if he doesn't regret gaining his independence. (Then there's the fact that Matthew actually tends to make friends easier than Alfred, who struggles with social cues and who tends to be A Lot for some people, a fact that Alfred is very aware of. There's a lot Alfred envies about his brother.)

Meanwhile Matthew thinks, why am I never anyone's favourite? Anyone's ride of die? He has a good relationship with Arthur and Francis but he's never going to be their favourite. And even though Alfred's not part of the commonwealth, maybe Matthew remembers the first time Australia and New Zealand met his brother, their awe at seeing this figure of legend for the first time. He's never going to be impressive in that way. (Matthew doesn't notice how much more friends he has than Alfred, only that Alfred's few friends are all his best friends, while he feels like he's surrounded by people but is unable to confide in anyone.)
