4: Piece of canon you disregard?

Honestly I disregard a lot of canon? But probably most notably the familial relationships between characters. I think that most nations were left on their own to grow up? Or at least with the americas, they don't view the colonizers as family.

I also like to think that the americas were around before colonization, just in very different ways, as the native civilizations. I know america is shown as a child when he's found, but that just doesn't feel right. I don't want to hate on England and the other colonizers, but I see it more as... They came across this new land, disregarded the already existing personifications, and just started killing off their people, making them weaker and weaker, and ignoring the children they were leaving in their wake.

Bit of a dark headcanon, but it's a concept I find interesting.

Oh, this is a difficult one, cause I like a lot of creators! I love all of my mutuals very much, and they're all really great, but I really love @simple-persica 's art. She's such a great artist, and I really admire her! 18: Character(s) you want to see appear in the anime?

Honestly I haven't really been keeping up with the anime? So I don't know who has appeared and who hasn't, but it's be nice for Czechia to be in there, and Ancient Greece. The latter has appeared! She has been referenced briefly in the early seasons too! I really want to see Ancient Greece, but that might just be because it's been one of my hyperfixations for years. Ancient societies in general have been a hyperfixation for me since I was 8, so I'd really like to see more of those.

Oh, and I'd like to see the roman emperors too! And Cleopatra, and all that. Again, a hyperfixation of mine, but I also want to see more history included in Hetalia, cause I'm a history nerd first and a Hetalia fan second.

“My king is putting aside his wife. They say he already has another in mind.” England said it like a man trying not to sound frustrated. But it was clear to Portugal that he was. He had known the man long enough to see the feelings in his face.

Only after a dinner and light conversation had it finally come spilling out, as England got comfortable enough.

He asked, watching closely for a reaction, “How many is this now?” England let out a very long sigh and said, “This is the fifth. That is not the worst part.”

He swallowed hard, like the most unpleasant truth was just on the tip of his tongue. Portugal prodded him gently, “What is worse?” England ran one of his hands over his face, before finally saying, “I have met the lady, and she is only seventeen. She is practically a child.”

He looked pale and ill, like the concept of taking a teenager to bed was sickening him. Portugal said, offhandedly, “He sounds like my father.”

The blonde raised one eyebrow and said, “What do you mean?” Portugal picked up one of mostly empty wine glasses from the table and drained the dregs from it.

Then he said, “Have you ever questioned how he had so many sons? Or what happened to the women he bedded.”

He heard the sharp sting of bitterness in his voice. It was always there when he discussed Rome. But, it was safe to show it with England. The blonde shook his head, “My mother said he was an immoral tyrant, and I never thought more about it.”

Portugal put down the glass, which was now empty. He chewed on his own lower lip for a moment before he said, “Would you like to hear the story?”

England seemed to hesitate for a moment, like he was questioning whether it would be asking Portugal to recount pain. He knew him well enough to know that Rome was a sore subject. But, he felt like turning down the offer would be rude.

But, he finally nodded. Portugal shifted in his chair and said, “This is what I know from what I’ve found of him:

When he was young, they say he loved Ancient Greece. I have found some of the poems that he wrote for her, and he claimed it was the truest love he ever felt.

I can’t know if that was ever true.

Perhaps he did love her when they were married, or perhaps he did it for power. His life seemed to be a quest to always have more.

Greece gave him an heir. From what I can tell, Byzantium was the first son he ever had. He was elated to have a son, and celebrated it for the world to know. But, celebrations were always followed with restlessness for him. Once he got what he wanted, then he had to find something new to conquer.

No one knows when he first met my mother, Carthage.  But I think he began to stray when he had a legitimate successor. He never wrote her beautiful poems, or gave her lavish gifts. I remember he would visit for a few days at a time, but keep to himself. He arrived and left without ceremony, rarely even asking to see me. There was no celebration for me or for Tony, or ever any acknowledgment that we existed.

After Tony was born, they started fighting. I remembered hearing the yelling through the walls. Though I never heard what they said clearly, I imagine she wanted him to acknowledge Tony and me as more than just bastards. It is what any mother would do for her sons.

She deserved better than him. She ruled the sea, and rode elephants to battle. Her intelligence and skill was unmatched, even if he thought he was the kind of the world.

She was too strong-willed for him, and he knew it. If he had married her, he would have been unable to control her. He couldn’t do that when she was just a mistress.

I know that Ancient Greece left him, and I imagine that she found out that he had two other children. That must not have rested well with her, and worried her about the position of her son. His absences would be enough for anyone to hope for better.

I do not know when Heracles was born, or who his father was. If he Is Rome’s son, then he wasn’t cursed with our father’s looks, or his temper.

The fighting between my mother and Rome just got worse, and my mother sent us away before it came to war between them. I remember her hugging us both before putting us on a boat set on a course for Iberia. It was the last time I saw her. 

I know in my heart that she protected us from him. He was a pitiless man who killed her for insisting that Tony and I were given what we should have been. He did not want his heir to have to compete.

Now we will always be known as Rome’s bastards, and I know Tony resents that. I made peace with it years ago.

What could you expect from a man who murdered his twin brother? What could we really believe he would give us?”

He paused for a moment and then looked at England and said, “This is where it becomes relevant.”

England thought he heard pain when Portugal recounted Carthage’s fate. But, he dared not ask his friend. It was too much to push for more vulnerability, when what he was being given was already a gift.

Portugal continued, “With only one legitimate son, and an expanding empire, he decided that he needed more. Perhaps he began to understand that he was mortal, even with our long lives. No empire lasts forever.

He found a new bride named Veneti. I have heard that she was seventeen when he married her. I supposed he tired of strong women, and chose one he could dominate.

She bore him twins, who he swore were the spitting image of him and Remus. He thought it showed that the gods favored him, even when his empire started to wane. That’s when he chose Feliciano as his heir, even over Byzantium. He saw himself reborn and thought it was fate.

Ironic, don’t you think? He disinherited his eldest in secret, and still expected to be welcomed in Constantinople when he fled from Germania. He chose to vanish rather than face his end.

He thought  as his sons we all needed to prove ourselves to him when he never proved himself capable of being a father. I would rather be my mother’s son than any child of his.”

Then he drew in a breath and stopped talking. England felt like this was the end of the story, and he would not pry.

He tried to change the subject back to the present, to prevent Portugal from delving too deeply into his feelings about his father. He said, “What do you think this all means for Henry? Rome’s empire fell to pieces after he died. I hope that will not happen to me.”

Portugal leaned forward onto his elbows and said, “It means that his most competent heir will be the last one he expects, and it may very well be the one that he refuses to acknowledge.”

Hi! Headcanon about Aph Rome and Ancient Israel?

Hi!

Headcannons for ancient Rome:

1. He is the definition of an attack puppy. He is cuddly and loving one moment but if those he loves are in danger he will not hesitate to kill or maim in their defense.

2. He and Judea (the tribe of Judah) are/were married. He was with Helena (ancient Greece) before but she wanted rid of him so introduced him to Judah.

3. He fell head over heels for Judah and did everything he could to impress him. In the end all Judah wanted was for Romulus to prove he could be mature.

HC for ancient Israel.

1. She is a sweetheart. She loved and raised the tribes like they were her own children. She was overjoyed when she had a child of her own and heartbroken when she had to let him go.

2. She endured a lot. Her husband was often gone choosing instead to visit his mistress ancient Egypt. He was gone for years at a time sometimes and she found solace in a lover of her own.

3. She was killed by Rome when his people burned down the temple in Jerusalem.

Heracles hears about the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

Something in him mourns.

He sees Sadik again at a world meeting.

(Heracles has to pause to wonder if this is what it’s like to see a ghost; this is not the Sadik he remembers, proud and strong, with that ever present mask. This Sadik hangs low, shoulders curled forward as though Atlas has dropped the world on them. His eyes, a haunting green in the flickering lighting of the conference room, look sunken and dead.

This is not the Ottoman Empire that Heracles once knew.)

Sadik does not speak and Heracles does not say anything when they brush by each other in the corridor, but he lingers in the back of Heracles’ mind for the rest of the day.

(He sees him again at the end of the day, when they’re all going their separate ways.

“You’re alive,” he says, in passing, but does not dare look Sadik in the eye.

The fallen empire’s laugh is laced with bitterness. “Not alive. Surviving. Merely existing.”)

When Heracles arrives home, Egypt is in the kitchen, perched on the counter with some grapes in hand. He’s the only one Heracles really stayed close to after gaining independence - everyone else went their separate ways. Greece isn’t surprised to see him - he merely tips his head and dodges Gupta’s swinging feet to reach by and dig through the refrigerator for something to drink.

“Was this your first time seeing him?” Egypt asks, golden eyes fixed on Heracles.

He can feel the other nation’s gaze burning into his skull. “Yeah,” he says, but doesn’t look up, “it was.”

Egypt merely blinks slowly, tips his head, and pops another grape into his mouth.

“You should go see him.”

Heracles stops, halfway to the exit of the kitchen. “Yeah,” he sighs, softly, “maybe I should.”

But he and Egypt both know he won’t.

Greece isn’t sure what possesses him to pass notes at the next meeting. Turkey is two seats down from him and he scribbles messily on a scrap of paper and slips it casually around the Italian brothers, who take no notice. On Sadik’s other side, Egypt doesn’t miss the slip of paper, locking eyes with Heracles, but only momentarily.

By then, Heracles has already completed his task and relaxes back in his seat again. He knows, instinctively, when Sadik reads it - the sound of it being opened is loud to him, even if nobody else pays it any attention.

Heracles doesn’t get a response.

(“You should just go visit him,” Japan tells him later, when Heracles falls into step with the Eastern nation.

Gupta is with Turkey, so his other friend had been out of the question.

“Maybe I should,” Greece says again, and he’s not sure if he means it or not anymore.)

Heracles doesn’t bring up the subject again for a couple of years. They go by in a blink - a split second in which he questions his place in the grand scheme of things. There was a song, he recalls, that his mother used to sing, but Greece can’t remember the words anymore. His mind is too swamped with papers and money and problems upon problems. He just wants to sleep.

For the first time in a while, Heracles goes to church.

He’s done a lot of bad and can’t really think of the last time he repented for it. Most of the time, he questions just how religious he really is. His country is, sure, but Heracles can’t help but wonder about his own personal beliefs.

He doesn’t recognize any of the people inside. By now, he supposes, all of the old members have probably died. These are their children, or their children’s children, perhaps. Greece isn’t completely sure how much time has passed. In the end, he sits silently in the back and contemplates his life as he half listens to the sermon.

The pastor approaches him later, when he’s standing still, watching the life move on around him.

“You’re new,” the man says, preparing to hand Heracles pamphlets.

“No,” Greece replies, “I’ve been here for a long time.”

The next time, he makes a point of switching churches.

At the next world meeting, Greece writes another note. He asks, what’s death like?

Turkey grabs him by the wrist after the meeting ends and looks him dead in the eye. “It’s pure nothingness. You’re nothing but a speck in this entire universe.”

Heracles turns the words over and over in his mind for a long time.

“He talks about you, you know,” Egypt tells him, tucking up in the corner of the worn couch.

Heracles is shuffling through his movies when the African country speaks, but he doesn’t pause or give any sign that he’s heard. Gupta knows he’s listening. Greece is just taking his time, gathering his thoughts. He’s seen every last one of these films at least twice - he’s bored of them now. He and Egypt both know that they’ll just end up scrolling aimlessly through the television before something is put on for the sake of background noise.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

Greece doesn’t immediately respond. He doesn’t need to; he’s frowning and he can feel Egypt’s gaze burning into his back again. Heracles can’t say he’s any different - he knows he talks about Turkey more than he should; thinks about him and their history more than he should. Heracles puts the movies away and picks up the remote, turning to the couch, but avoiding Gupta’s eyes. Egypt, just like that, sits up straight abruptly, abandoning his previously relaxed posture. Heracles is just trying to lock away the conclusion when Egypt voices it.

“Oh my god,” says Gupta, wide eyed, staring Heracles down, “you’re in love.”

Greece isn’t sure how he finds himself at Turkey’s door.

The house is the same as he remembers, but more foreboding. There are so many memories in this place, good and bad. There’s a sort of haze over them all. Heracles can’t ever forget them, but they’ve all amassed in a spot in his distant memory, never quite at the forefront until now. Now, they all push forward and he’s suddenly overwhelmed, considers turning back. But his fingers are already reaching above the door, where he knows Turkey still keeps his spare key, and unlocking the door.

Sadik will be expecting him, he knows. He probably knew the moment Heracles crossed into his borders.

Memories flood Greece immediately. He hears laughing, sees faded shapes of young nations racing down the hall, down the long, endless corridor. He remembers all the games and the fights, remembers the few silent times in the dead of night, remembers the way he wandered these halls as a child, freshly woken from nightmares about his mother. He remembers the library in the dead of night, moonlight filtering through the curtains, providing just enough light for Greece to flip aimlessly through Turkey’s many books. Nowadays, he’s not sure if he ever actually read a single one.

Most vividly, he recalls the day he left, walking down this hall one final time.

Heracles retraces his steps, silently, remembering himself from the days he wanted his freedom from this empire. He draws himself up straight, steps forward in the hall. He doesn’t have Mount Athos with him today, but he imagines the cross in his hand. He knows where Sadik will be.

Heracles does not step on the board.

Sadik is at his desk. He looks exhausted, shoulders weighed down and dark bags beneath his eyes. His mask is off for once, and his dull green eyes are brooding, fixed on some point in the distance, focused on something that Heracles can’t see. Turkey doesn’t move when Heracles steps in, but Greece knows the man is aware of his presence. He takes his time, tracing a nook in the floor that Mount Athos had left, recalling the last time they’d been in this room together. It always seems to begin and end here.

“Sometimes, Sadik,” Greece whispers, and finally, Turkey’s eyes slowly slide to him, “memories are the worst form of torture.”

Sadik snorts, trying to draw himself up. He is still recovering; his country is strong, but he is not. Heracles knows he is thinking about the memories this house will eternally hold.

“Using my own words against me? Never thought I’d see the day.”

Heracles is exhausted. They’ve been playing this game for too long. He sinks down, sits on the floor and leans against the wall, allowing his shoulders to drop. This isn’t the Ottoman Empire anymore. It’s just Turkey. It’s just Sadik. Turkey hardly hesitates; he drags himself up out of his seat and crosses the room, sinking down beside Greece. Greece closes his eyes and drops his head against Turkey’s shoulder, feeling the weight of the other man’s head against his just a moment later. It’s been a long time, he thinks. Just in general; it’s been a long time.

“I’m sorry,” Sadik sighs, softly, voice rough with exhaustion.

“Me too,” says Heracles, reaching out to take Sadik’s hand.
