Love in the Big City Part 3: Kylie Recontextualizes Everything

I have waffled all week about what to write about this chapter. There have been some great essays about HIV and the stigma in Korea by @stuffnonsenseandotherthings here, as well as how antiretrovirals and pre-exposure prophylactics work and when they were available from @wen-kexing-apologist here. This context was all critical to understand everything Young doesn’t talk about in this section of the book.

I’ve been stuck on so many parts of this section of the book. The way stigma holds people back from care, from maintenance, from life-saving treatment and knowledge, from understanding their condition and preventing them unnecessarily from living a full life, which @doyou000me had me thinking about with their comments about Young’s coping mechanisms of minimization and emotional distance that possibly worked in conjunction with the Korean government healthcare policies and social stigma to keep Young from being informed about his own condition. The way Young holds himself back from happiness, and how it’s so heartbreaking to watch him open up to it slowly in this section and then, as @my-rose-tinted-glasses wrote , he let the shame and self-loathing take control again. The way this relationship feels so real; @lurkingshan wrote so eloquently on how this section describes the details of a relationship as it started to settle. The relationship with Hyung was entirely ephemeral, in the liminal period of time between when Young was visiting his mother in hospital and before everything opened again for the day. There is so much that Young and Hyung never talked about–more than was obvious in chapter 2, because he never told Hyung about Kylie. In contrast, as @bengiyo pointed out, his relationship with Gyu-Ho started with honesty and was rooted in the physical presence of their apartment, which as a beautiful metaphor was grounded and improved slowly over time through the work they put into it but was also too small for them.

I keep thinking about how Part 3 is bookended by Young disappointing Gyu-Ho with his absence. How he leaves him at the airport both times, thinking he’s doing Gyu-Ho a favour actually–he characterizes Gyu-Ho’s trip to Japan without him as much more fun, and he imagines Gyu-Ho’s future in Singapore will be better. In both cases, Gyu-Ho was only going because of Young, because Young wanted to, and Young planned it. But our narrator cannot get past seeing himself as something that brings Gyu-Ho down, and so he sabotages his own future. I feel for Gyu-Ho, being shepherded onto a plane alone when he was envisioning his future with the man he loved. It must have been devastating to be pushed away.

This is not related to anything but I just love the detail of Young’s split lip and how he tastes blood when he kisses Gyu-Ho while drunk at the club and not yet knowing his name, and then panics, and we as readers don’t yet know why. Brilliant storytelling.

I can’t stop thinking about how this reveal recontextualizes everything in parts 1 and 2. How the “incident that earned me a medical discharge” means Kylie was already in Young’s life as he took the engineering student he was seeing with him to get an STD check; as he was screamed at by an ex who prophesied that Young would get sick from being promiscuous and called him a ‘dirty rag that could never be cleaned’, which Young took with stoicism. I loved @bengiyo ‘s observation in his post linked above that Kylie’s presence likely coloured his reaction to Jaehee outing him to her fiance.

Kylie was present as he watched his coffee be stolen by Hyung, when he thought about introducing Hyung to his mother, while he was wrestling with how Hyung (and, I think the narration makes clear, how he) was ashamed at how Young couldn’t ‘pass’ and was ‘obviously gay’, when he choked Hyung in his mother’s kitchen and it was seeing his tears on Hyung’s face that made Young let go. Kylie was part of him when he drank pesticide and tried to die, while he sat by his mother’s sickbed and had her head in his lap in the park, when he said “disease can turn anyone into a completely different person”, when he said he would “hope that she would die without having known.”

Mostly, my brain keeps getting stuck on how familiar Young is to me. His choices, his self-loathing, his refusal to take anything seriously because at his core he’s terrified of facing what his reality means. And that fear ironically gets in the way of him understanding that his reality is not as scary as he thinks it is. He functions like he has to be alone, and so much of that comes from his internalized homophobia and his HIV diagnosis. He’s been told he’s dirty, something to be cleaned but irreparable, by so many people in different ways through his life. The man he claims as his greatest love barely even liked him as a person, and didn’t fully know him. I think that’s why he was able to feel more fully with Hyung, because in a way that relationship felt safer..Gyu-Ho, the person who knew all of him, and who wanted to build a life together with that complete and full knowledge of him, must have been terrifying, and I’m not surprised it felt easier to push him away than to fight for their future together. But it breaks my heart.

There’s something rattling in my head about the T-aras that I don’t really know how to get out onto the page. In this chapter it’s revealed that the T-aras have been around the whole time, but they weren’t mentioned in parts 1 and 2. I think the fact that Young’s life feels more rounded, filled in with other people, and rich, than in parts 1 and 2 speaks to his emotional state in this part, as well as to how his time with Gyu-Ho wasn’t obsession but was more grounded in the mundane and the everyday. The T-aras themselves feel like familiar friends. Like with Hyung and JaeHee (at first), Young is drawn to people who he can remain emotionally distant from and who remain emotionally distant from him. People who will buy the story of “ruptured disc” for why he left military service early. People who joke about being poz and won’t ask questions and who hear the news about his new boyfriend as an ‘in’ to their favourite club. People who don’t take things seriously (or in Hyung’s case take things so seriously that Young can’t take him seriously). I was so glad to find out they existed because up to this point Young felt so isolated most of the time, with his world circling around one obsession in each part. But he had the T-aras the whole time; I’m choosing to read this as he just didn’t hold their importance to him in the same way in parts 1 and 2. As was already clear in the narrative but this makes even more obvious, Young’s isolation is not only self-inflicted but it’s in some ways a lie he tells himself to feel safer. He has friends, he just refuses to acknowledge their presence or importance, or to let them in to be more important, because he is so braced for being rejected for core parts of him that cannot be excised.

How do you think Jumin/Jumin's route would have been different if it was written as a wlw romance. I had one dream about gender swapped Jumin, and now I can't stop thinking of a lesbian version of him and his romance.

I wrote a whole answer to this when you sent it then closed the tumblr app for five seconds and it deleted so I'm begrudgingly rewriting it in my notes app so it won't happen again, sorry for the delay anon!

Very exciting prospect for me (lesbian) but my answer is perhaps less exciting, because I think she would be incredibly similar. I feel like if you take away any of her traits—the curiosity, the straightforwardness, the distant kindness, etc.—or any of her history it would be doing her an injustice. There would have to be some minor character gender switches for it to make sense given heteronormativity though. Seducing men into signing contracts, her father's colleagues being inappropriate to her in childhood as opposed to his partners, and I think the Sarah situation could play out interestingly. They would probably also have to make her a man (because, again, heteronormativity). Maybe one who is like... viscerally disgusted when Jumin kisses a woman in front of him and outs her to her father, and that becomes part of the Chairman Han side plot? But overall, not much change. Rika stuff could stay the same.

Another one of Jumin's core traits is that he is relatively unfazed by how people view him (with MC and his father being the exceptions to the rule), and I don't feel like that would be affected by her being a woman either. I do, however, think that there would be a very relevant layer of misogyny over it all for a plethora of reasons. I imagine traits Jumin is already scrutinised for, bluntness and lack of cognitive empathy, etc., would be picked apart even more because they're not befitting of a woman of her status or something absurd. Jumin's position in C&R is already belittled because of his father being the chairman, and unfortunately I think being a woman in his role would be met with even more "you're just here because of your father" ridicule. Her personal standards, despite already being incredibly high in canon, could very well be pushed even further by the need to prove herself as specifically a woman who is more capable of doing the job than her male counterparts. I think she would be more annoyed than actually bothered by it, though, at least on the surface level. Like "It's absurd that they think just because I'm a woman they could somehow do a better job. 😒"

I don't feel as if her view on relationships would change, either, and considering I already view Jumin as mspec and incredibly unconcerned by the gender of whoever he falls for I don't think there would be an issue there for her personally (so no Jaehee route bestie shenanigans). She doesn't even think twice about the fact she's falling for a woman she's just befuddled by the fact she's falling so hard for someone at all. That means I also don't think the course of the relationship itself would play out any differently aside from less of Zen's "A WOMAN ALONE AT A MAN'S HOUSE?" and probably a bit more "WHAT?" because I doubt anyone in the RFA would have expected her to pull a woman. In general, really, there would probably be more "A WOMAN???" as opposed to "A RELATIONSHIP???" which (sadly) could very well have a negative impact on her public image. Not that she would really care, but I WOULD on her behalf!!! :'( So maybe the whole public proposal thing would have been turned down a notch.

Anyway. I want her BAD even if she is doomed to be reduced to girlboss status by the fandom </3

Love in the Big City Book Club: Part 3

Spoilerish:

In Part 3, Gyu-ho gets to be called by his real name! Is it because he's important to Young? Is it because Gyu-ho is at ease with his sexuality, so Young doesn't feel the need to hide his name. Is it because they have a healthy relationship, like Young and Jaehee in Part 1? On the other hand, the T-aras only get nicknames based on the idols of this band.

2. In Part 3, Young reveals that he's been carrying his illness since he was discharged from the military. How does that information impact your understanding of prior events?

We knew from Part 1 that Young had been discharged from military service, and I had read somewhere that he was HIV+, but I hadn't linked the two. It's kind of baffling to me that he only stated it in Part 3, when a) it's such an important fact in someone's life, b) Part 2 had a big focus on disease. What doesn't surprise me, on the other hand, is that Young gave it a cute nickname, Kylie, because he sure likes avoiding real names.

Because of Kylie, he doesn't expect to have a perfect romance, which might explain why he remained for so long in a relationship with his nameless lover from Part 2. On the other hand, he only has to take his meds and use condoms every time he has sex, which doesn't scare off Gyu-ho (too bad Gyu-ho often can't get it up with a condom, which limits their sexual activity).

3. His relationship with Gyu-ho is the most successful we've seen Young have thus far. Why do you think they worked for so long, and what do you think made Gyu-ho finally end things before moving to Shanghai?

They have a healthy relationship, they're almost the same age (Gyu-ho is only one year younger) and Gyu-ho is pretty chill about a lot of things. He even installs Young's curtains, which is peak domesticity (Curtain Fic is the name of the trope, after all).

I think they could have had a long-term relationship in China, if Young hadn't been blocked by the news that he would need a blood test. After that, he gives up, and Gyu-ho can feel that it's the end. Even though Part 3 is mostly happy like Part 1, it ends once again on a sad note.

Apart from that, Jaehee makes an apparition in Part 3, but Young gives up there as well. Admittedly, Young was bored by Jaehee's other friends, and this kind of situation can quickly get awkward, but it feels like he didn't make much an effort.

I've also started reading Idol Moves by KT Salvo. It's the sequel to Idol Minds, an m/m romance (with explicit scenes) about a Korean American actor and a Korean idol. Fun times, that I think will interest some of you too!

Love in the Big City Part 3 Check In

This has taken me a lot longer to write than I expected. Part of it is being a bit under the weather, but a major part is the ache I felt for the narrator at being unable to sustain a long-term relationship with someone who was ready to pour so much love over him. Like with Jaehee, so much of his relationship with Gyu-ho is full of small details about how they took care of each other and how they supported each other, and it pains me that he wasn’t able to keep this.

As usual, I appreciate the narrator letting me know that, like (500) Days of Summer (2009), this is a story about a breakup so that I have the right framework when we’re reading this. As we moved into this section, I was relieved to see that Young finally had something resembling friends. Still, I was not surprised that they’re essentially younger drinking buddies that he feels like a pseudo-babysitter for. His relationship with them is fairly shallow, and they end up reinforcing his reticence inflicted by his status.

Revealing that Young has been positive this entire time was one of the most affective experiences I’ve had while reading this book. It adds a new layer to his determination to pay for Jaehee’s abortion, because he maybe thought that at least this was a lifelong consequence he could help someone else he loved avoid. It also reframes how hurt he was that Jaehee told her fiancé that he was gay, because he doesn’t want anyone to know about his status and now he can’t trust Jaehee to hold that secret.

I feel like I have to treat the narrator whose relationship with Hyung as a different person from the narrator of this story, because it is rather telling about how serious he is about Gyu-ho that he never revealed his status to Hyung despite hooking up regularly for months.

With Gyu-ho, I think I am so sad about the apartment itself. The narrator infuses this section with so many references to all the little and big things they do for each other, but one of the big realities they face is that the apartment is too small for the both of them. Gyu-ho showed up and did the most romantic thing of hanging the curtains, but they needed a bigger place once it became the primary residence for both of them, especially when Gyu-ho got stable employment. However, the narrator can't take that step forward because it would be too much commitment.

It's sad, because Gyu-ho was 100% in this relationship. He was given all the information and committed to this man as his partner. He even went so far as to help him commit fraud to get around a blood test. Still, Young's avoidant nature gets in the way. He doesn't even call his illness by his name, so it's likely he doesn't know if he's undetectable (thought it may be too early for those drugs to be in circulation).

I'm not sure what awaits us in the final section. As difficult and violent as the separation from Hyung was, I find myself missing Gyu-ho days later, and all that their relationship represented as an opportunity for the two of them. They seemed to work well, and you have to wonder how many gays are like the narrator, and find the mundanity of commitment tiresome and boring. Perhaps that's why he only has friends in their early 20s.

6 - Something I remember vividly from reading one of your fics: Is it weird that the first thing that came to mind is Jaehee with pigtails from the 'Hair' fic you wrote for her? It was such a domestic piece, but picturing myself playing with her little pigtails and watching her blush as I call her cute, is something I still remember very vividly, oddly enough. I love Jaehee!! And I love the way you write her to bits and pieces. Soft coffee wife, my beloved <3

7 - What made me the most emotional after reading: Telepathy. It's always going to be Telepathy. Okay, maybe not always, but it'll definitely remain up there even in the future. I'd say it's my favorite fic of yours, actually. Which is... honestly very surprising, because I don't get as effected by Jumin/V stories as I do with Choi twins or Rika, for exactly! I do get sad and it's interesting for me to see them explored in different ways, but I never really felt... all choked up about them, you know? Well, you took that and slapped me right across the face with the masterpiece that is Telepathy./pos The way you wrote down the slow and painful process of drifting apart from your best friend... God, it felt both cathartic and painful. Probably because it's something I've experienced first hand, very recently, at that. Telepathy is a fic that left me laying on my bed and staring up into the ceiling, just thinking about it for a good 15 minutes. And, you know what? That's my favorite kind of feeling after reading a fic. I love Telepathy. I will gush about for as long as it exists. Go read Telepathy, ya'll.

8 - What I like the most about your writing: Descriptive writing. Now, it's probably because descriptive is my personal weakest point (in my opinion), and I tend to always focus extremely hard whenever I read someone else use descriptive writing in their works to learn new techniques and memorize if it sounds good or not. Either way, God, do I adore the way you manage to just paint the exact image of what's happening as I read. It's not too much, and it's not too little. It's just right. If I would write up everything I vividly remember from your fics, this ask would get too damn long, but what's important is that I often remember the exact location. How it looked. How it felt. How it smelled. How a certain character was dressed. How their face looked. Whether it was warm or cold. What sounds there were. It's those tiny details that make even the simplest of your stories shine so brightly! They just... get stuck in your head like your favorite song. And I think that's just amazing <3

I don't know what I did to deserve this Mia!! I've been sat here reading this over and over and feeling all warm and fuzzy🥺 Please don't worry about trying to sound English teacher-y, you've conveyed everything here so well.

Soft coffee wife Jaehee! I've made it my personal mission to write her soft and happy because she gets to little opportunity to do that in the canon routes (and I love her to bits and think she deserves the world). I'm so glad the pigtails imagery stuck! She deserves her cute moments too!

The Telepathy love!!! I will always appreciate love for Telepathy, it's one of those fics that will also always be one of my favs because of the writing process and the relationship between V and Jumin. It's a wonderful surprise to hear that my writing had that effect on you, especially for a relationship that doesn't usually affect you that strongly. It's all I could ask for, really. I'm very sorry that you had to deal with the slow loss of a friend. It's a uniquely painful experience and I'm sending you a lot of warmth <3

Finally, I read the Judge End. It's sad how the RFA basically torn apart (I did agree that there should be a name change but throwing away the name and breaking apart ain't the same thing... *insert sad V emoji*) And it's absurb how harsh you would need to act in order to unlock it. At least now I totally understand why it only took a few 'soft' choices to lead you to the other ending, and why Cheritz seems to push us into getting Forgive End. They feel the need to sink us with lessons about forgiveness and keep saying that's the right thing to do because of Korean culture, I suppose. Be warned, this is just my own speculation.

When I was in junior high school, a certain Korean TV series was aired at noon. It was unfortunate that I had to go to school every afternoon so I didn't get to watch all of it, but that series left such a big impression on me. Its name is Phantom, an SBS series about hacking and cyber crimes. I remember this detail the most: a girl was cyber bullied to the point that she committed suicide. At that time it was so unfamiliar to me that I remember it even now. If you guys read Chinese web novels then you'd know that the netizens there don't really care if news posted online is truthful or not. If it is said that this celebrity or that idol had an addiction, committed adultery,... then they'll just assume it's true, and swarm said celebrity's Weibo with hate speech. And do you know about a case where an actor in Japan was revealed to have a girlfriend, his fans felt so angry and 'betrayed' that they pressured a production he was starring in to cancel his role? In the end, he got removed from his role for real. Does this feel familiar? That's right, it's Zen's route in a nutshell right there, where Jaehee was so worried about MC and Zen dating, because she knew fans would turn hostile to Zen once they found out he had a girlfriend "who weren't themselves". I don't know what's it like in other countries, but here, in Asian countries, many of the netizens are just so... uncultured, if I dare say. It's not only these 3 countries, but probably all over the world, cases of cyber bullying are still happening. How convenient it is for people to just hide behind the screen and spit cruelty at others or play god. They curse and sneer at prople who they think that were in the wrong, while maintaining a high sense of moral for themselves.

With VAE, you can see such behaviors reflected in the 'wrong' choices, for example:

Rika: My thoughts are evil. No, it's all because of my head. This head of mine can think of nothing but dark things.

Rika: I wish this head of mine would stop working... So that I won't do anything. So that I can't do anything.

The players then have to choose from 2 options, including:

Maybe you've been too obsessed with saving others that you forgot how to save yourself.

Or:

You know, that'd be the way you can be the least of help for others.

To reach the Judge End, we need to choose the second choice (alongside a series of fixed choices before that of course). Honestly, that choice is way too cruel for me, we're basically telling her to shut down her brain and stop functioning here (which she did, she fell into a coma), but in order to reach Judge, I can't help but choosing it, since I knew even 1 'wrong' choice could possibly lead to Forgive and that sweet free talk would remain unlocked forevah. If judgement goes too far, it's no longer judgement but pure cruelty... is what I think Cheritz is trying to tell us here. They're telling us to be more understanding even only a little bit, and don't take malicious pleasure in judging other people, even if they are wrong, because you never know whether a life would be lost due to such malice. For me, sometimes it's hard to tell whether I was pleased to see Rika brought to jail since I felt bad for those she hurted, or because of pure pleasure in playing justice defender where you get to curse the bad person all you want. If it's the latter, then it's bad - said Cheritz, probably.

Oopsie, I nearly forgot I took this picture. The wording is harsh, but I laughed for that savage line of Jumin. xD This is the Judge End where RFA members were utterly disgusted by Rika and shooed her away from their lives. It was all fun and games I honestly think their reaction was understandable given how badly hurted they were when suddenly we were introduced to a "Rika's Circus"... How could something be both hilarious and cruel at the same time?? Seven being the narrator, Jaehee's and Yoosung's exaggeration, Zen talking in monotone, especially Jumin's high-pitched voice and Vanderwood's "why the hell am I here again?" confusion, they were so hilarious I couldn't stop chuckling. ......Sorry that I laughed, what's the password for Wi-Fi in hell?

Entertaining as it is, the "Rika's Circus" thing is still something Cheritz made to guilt trip us. It wasn't real, it was only a dream MC had, but after laughing, we started to feel guilty. Brilliant, I must admit.

Anyway, although I did feel bad for her since V's route actually I still consider what she did is wrong, and no excuse for her actions. You and I, we can understand her, like her, but should never justify her crimes by blaming her past and mental illness. Likewise, V haters could hate him all they/you want, he kinda sorta deserves it with what he did wrong, but don't point fingers at him for the crimes Rika did. Oh yeah, now that I think about it, Saeran is a combination of both V and Rika, don't you think? He was a mentally unstable innocent like V who was exploited and suffered by Rika's hands, then became an abuser himself like Rika. Remember who locked and chained? MC in her room, starved her, verbally abused and kinda sexually harassed her? And then guess who had to sneak in to give MC food to eat hm?

My point is, these 3 characters are flawed as hell and they did so many annoying wrongdoings, but instead of purely hating them, how about trying to understand them? - was probably what Cheritz wanted to convey. Not my words since I have love-hate relationship with them where sometimes I hate them and sometimes I don't. And I still can't like Rika one bit if you ask me, never was, never will.

If you guys read this till the end and agreed with me, then you'd probably love this underrated masterpiece too. It's a parody that whichever fandom you go, you'd still see people using it... the ultimate scene we don't understand but can still enjoy... xD

A few months later….

Jaehee stood in her sparsely furnished apartment, her heart heavy with a sense of unease. She moved methodically, folding clothes and packing her essentials into a small suitcase. The prospect of flying to Japan to expand her martial arts academy business didn't fill her with excitement, but rather a gnawing anxiety.

As she zipped up her suitcase, she couldn't help but reflect on the challenges ahead. It was a daunting endeavor, filled with uncertainties and risks.

Jaehee took a deep breath, trying to summon the determination she needed for this journey. She knew that success required sacrifices and bold moves, but that didn't make it any easier. With her bags in hand, she left her apartment, locking the door behind her, and headed towards the airport, her apprehension growing with each step.

On the other hand, Seventeen was in a state of controlled chaos as they hurriedly prepared to leave for their highly anticipated Japan tour. The dorm was a flurry of activity, with members bustling about, gathering their belongings, and ensuring they had everything they needed for the tour.

Seungcheol, the group's leader, stood at the epicenter of the commotion, his usually calm demeanor replaced by a sense of urgency. He barked out instructions and reminders, trying to maintain order amidst the pandemonium. His role was not just to lead them on stage but also to manage the logistical aspects of their tours, and today was no exception.

"Okay, guys, let's move! We've got a schedule to keep!" Seungcheol called out, his voice firm but not without a touch of warmth. He knew that keeping everyone on track was crucial for a smooth departure.

Members scurried to their designated areas, double-checking their passports and luggage. Mingyu was frantically searching for his favorite hoodie, while Woozi was making sure he had his trusted laptop.

Jaehee navigated her way through the bustling airport, her suitcase rolling behind her. Her phone buzzed, and she saw her brother Yoon Jaehyuk's name on the screen. Answering the call, she greeted him with a warm smile.

"Hey, Noona, have you reached the airport safely?" Jaehyuk's voice crackled with concern.

"Yes, I'm here," she replied, her voice filled with a mix of weariness and determination. "And don’t worry, I'll get your watermelon flavoured Hai-Chew from Japan."

Before she could end the call, a chorus of voices erupted in the background. It was the other members of her brother's group, Treasure.

"Hey, Noona! Can you bring us some Japanese snacks too?" they chimed in unison.

Jaehee chuckled at their enthusiasm. "Of course, I will. Just send me a list of what you all want, and I'll do my best."

As she approached the security check, Jaehee hurriedly added, "I've got to go now, Please tell Jaehyuk that I'll call him once I'm settled."

Just as she disconnected the call and moved toward the security line, her attention was diverted by a group of boys who seemed to be in a rush, running through the airport and creating a whirlwind of chaos in their wake. She couldn't help but think, "Oh lord, they're so fucking noisy." The contrast between her calm demeanor and their energetic antics couldn't have been more apparent,

The business-woman settled into the comfort of the business class waiting room, grateful for a moment of respite before her flight to Japan.

The plush seats offered a welcome contrast to the airport's hustle and bustle. As she relaxed, she couldn't help but take out her laptop and work on the upcoming business meetings and the presentations.

Just as she began to find a sense of calm, a familiar raucous laughter caught her attention.

Turning her head, she saw the same group of noisy boys she had noticed earlier at the security check entering the waiting room. They settled down, but their chatter and antics created a whirlwind of chaos.

Her irritation grew with each passing moment. The boys seemed utterly oblivious to their surroundings, laughing loudly, playfully pushing each other around and dancing in a weird manner. They were like a whirlwind, disrupting the usually serene atmosphere of the business class area.

Jaehee couldn't help but roll her eyes, wondering how she would endure this journey with such noisy companions. Their exuberance was in stark contrast to the peace and quiet she had hoped for on this flight

To seek refuge from the commotion caused by the noisy group of boys, Jaehee had decided to step out of the waiting room to stretch her legs. She strolled down the corridor, contemplating the challenges that lay ahead in Japan.

Meanwhile, inside the waiting room, Seokmin turned to Seungcheol, his expression a mixture of urgency and discomfort. "Hyung, I really need to go to the washroom," he said, trying to keep his voice discreet.

Seungcheol, busy keeping an eye on their boarding time, replied absentmindedly, "Sure, take someone with you."

Seokmin hesitated for a moment but decided he could manage on his own. He headed towards the restroom, unaware that two enthusiastic fangirls had started tailing him discreetly.

It was only when he entered the restroom that he noticed the pair following him.

The fangirls, recognizing their idol, Seokmin, couldn't contain their excitement. They approached him, cameras in hand, expressing their admiration and invading his privacy. Seokmin panicked, feeling cornered and overwhelmed.

Jaehee, with her extensive martial arts training, had grown used to intervening in difficult situations. The commotion from the restroom reached her ears, and without hesitation, she rushed to the scene.

Inside the restroom, the two fangirls continued their intrusion, causing Seokmin's distress to escalate. Just as the fans were starting to get handsy, Jaehee stormed in with an air of authority. Fate orchestrated their reunion in the most unexpected of places, and their lives were about to take an unpredictable turn, forever intertwined by this serendipitous encounter.

Ps- ive not played another story because simply i can't afford it yet( donate hourglasses plss). If not played any after endings because im saving for another story, ive not played the secret endings for the same reasons and ive not played that Rika dlc so idk what happened to her. My second favourite character he's perfect in every single way and his route was soo good (i got his good ending on my first try!) He loves cats which is such a green flag, and he's just great.

My very first route i like Yoosung but i swear if he sends that crying emoji when im with people again ill cry. But i think hes pretty nice when hes not comparing us to Rika. Hes pretty wholesome too so yeah.

Shes awesome and overworked Jumin needs to give her a break asap. I find her pretty enjoyable and entertaining

Honestly, i have no opinion on him yet because in casual and deep story all he does is pop up in a chatroom occasionally.There's no chance to get to know him because something important is usually happening and thats why he talks to the mc. I will say i know he needs eye surgery but doesn't want to get it and Jumin is even offering to pay like thats a win win situation dude.

They all have something that sets them apart from the others, although not everyone's speech pattern/habit is as distinct as Jumin's. The only other one that really jumps at you is Jaehee. For the others, you can more or less see it (or the equivalent of) in the English version. But I'll try my best to explain how everyone else comes across in Korean. Also ! Please note that I've never played the game entirely in Korean, so I'm only speaking from the perspective of someone who selectively played Jumin's chats in his route/Deep Story and Jihyun's in his route/Another Story in Korean. Things may differ in other routes.

Jaehee is extremely polite all the time. Now, a lot of people will see this and think "yeah, we can also tell in English" but I cannot stress this enough, it really jumps at you in the Korean version. Jumin may sound harsh when he says she sounds like a robot but he's not entirely wrong. She sounds very strict and you can tell she's making a conscious effort to appear that way — it doesn't sound natural and it makes her feel even more guarded than Jumin is.

Zen is the exact opposite, except with Jaehee and Jihyun. It's normal for him to use casual speech with Yoosung and Seven since they're younger than him, but he's like this even with MC (aside from using the suffix '씨' to refer to her, which doesn't really have an equivalent in English — the closest would be as if he called her 'miss' but it's not quite that either) and Jumin, and that last one really shouldn't be the case. The English version tries to portray this by having Zen call him a jerk or an asshole but in Korean he doesn't insult him as much. He just uses casual speech with him which is extremely disrespectful since Jumin is older than him. And again, I'm not saying that to trash him (I love Zen a lot, he's #3 on my list lol), just to explain the differences between the English and Korean versions. He's also very flirty with the MC, lol. He calls her 자기야 (jagiya) a lot which is essentially the same as calling your s/o 'honey' lmao.

Seven is harder to explain. He sounds like a kid poking at your side to try and grab your attention 90% of the time but somehow not in an annoying way ? Lol. It's actually kind of unsettling to see the shift when he gets depressed later on in Jumin's route bc it just doesn't sound like him at all. The way he calls Jumin "Juminie-hyung" (essentially "big brother Juminie") is the cutest thing though.

Yoosung is probably the most 'standard' out of everyone aside from the fact that he makes a lot of typos (especially when he gets excited). He's using formal speech bc he's the youngest but since it makes sense in his case, he actually does come off as generally more friendly and approachable. Kind of like Zen in a way, just without the flirting.

Jihyun sounds hot in his ending when he speaks to MC in casual speech *Ahem* I mean, Jihyun is probably the hardest for me to explain bc the man's just giving off mixed signals for real. Idk how he manages to come off as both warm and friendly and extremely emotionally unavailable at the same time but he does. He's being formal to MC and Jaehee only but again that's normal bc he's the oldest and not particularly close to MC and Jaehee. His phone calls in Another Story/his route make me cry from how sweet he is though and that's it on today's episode of 'I love this man so much do not TOUCH ME'

I can't say for Saeran bc I haven't interacted with him enough in Korean to be able to tell what sets him apart. He also has like 4 personalities ('Unknown', 'Ray', 'Saeran's Route - Day 8' and 'True Saeran') which makes it harder to tell from what little I've seen.

Something about the way Jumin speaks in Korean that I can't really translate into English is the fact that (even when speaking, not just texting) he ends a lot of his sentences with ~군 (pronounced gun, where the 'u' makes a 'oo' sound, if you wanna check for yourself by listening to one of his calls). Without wanting to get too much into boring grammar, this is kind of interesting to me bc you would normally use that verb ending (Korean sentence structure is Subject-Object-Verb) to express surprise upon learning something new. So to me it's like Jumin is discovering everything for the first time and it's both funny and kinda cute, lol. If I were to try to explain what using ~군 as an ending would be in English, it's like Jumin is always starting his sentences with "I see that" or "I realize that".

An example of this would be something like someone saying "눈이 나쁘군" ((I see that) your vision is bad indeed) after a friend tries to read a sign from afar and messes up bc they can't see the letters properly.

Just thought I'd share this for those who follow me and wanted to know what I mean when I say Jumin sounds a lot softer in Korean. This is part of the reason why.

Yoosung Kim First Time Headcanons

Your first time with Yoosung would be a bit of a long time coming. He’s nervous because he doesn’t want to mess it up, and he’s also not quite sure how to approach the subject. Hey! Thank you for your request and sorry for the long wait! Here you are, I hope you like it! Please tell me your opinion! BTW, my inspirations were Ghost Whisperer, Pinterest and some old movies I once watched!

Jumin

When you first came into his penthouse, Jumin Han never imagined that you would like witchy and spiritual stuff.

And he found your love for that to be amazing.

He grew into it with you, loving to watch you cooking, intending to cook something for harmony and love.

Your husband simply loved the little habits you had.

Your rituals, your room.

No one except him, your cat Salem, and his cat Elizabeth the 3rd, was allowed to go in there.

He was amazed how quickly his white cat got used to it. It was as if it was always a part of her and she missed the spiritual stuff.

Once again, you sat in your room, doing something with herbs he couldn’t remember the name of.

He had to chuckle as he watched the room filled with smoke, or what you called it, ,,Magic Sprinkles’’. That’s why the Maid wasn’t allowed in here.

,,Do you need anything else besides the water, my love?’’ he asked you as he watched you mixing the stuff he brought you.

,,No,’’ you simply said.

He knew that whenever you were mixing stuff, you were really concentrating on it.

And perhaps this passion made him fall in love with you.

It took him a long time to get used to your owl.

Even now, after the long duration of your relationship, he still wasn’t used to the big bird in his apartment.

But he knew that the owl was special. Not just to you, but the owl himself.

,,I have to go,’’ you said to Zen as you came out of your room, your long hair waving from one side to the other as you put on your shoes.

,,A soul talked to me again and told me that he had to say goodbye to someone before he could go to paradise,’’ you said and then went out.

Zen, till now, never understood how you could communicate with owls.

But, he loved the way you approached people and could help them.

The white haired boy sat down on his couch as he looked around. The candles were still burning, giving him a mysterious feeling, even though you weren’t home.

The owl moved, making Zen look back as he suddenly felt the weight of it.

,,Well,’’ he began ,,at least you’re not a cat, right?’’ he asked and smiled.

,,Wow, Sister-in-law is amazing,’’ Yoosung’s sister said as both of them observed you reading Yoosung’s mother’s cards.

She never believed in these kinds of things, but ever since Yoosung’s mother was blessed with such a daughter in law, whenever you visited them, you had to read some cards.

And you were always right.

Yoosung observed you with your long black hair as your beautiful hands shuffled the cards.

He loved how every single nail was painted a different color.

Your jewelry around your neck made some little noises as everything suddenly grew silent and the candles began to fackle.

The green makeup made your eyes shine even more in the dark as you explained what you just read from the cards.

,,How does your cat react to her?’’ his sister suddenly asked him.

,,You won’t believe it, but Lisa seems to like her more than me. She even spends days on her shoulder, it’s really amazing.

Whenever her clients come to get their cards read, the cat is the first one by her side,’’ Yoosung laughed and thought about the first time his shy cat left his side for his wonderful wife.

The first few days were kind of hard for Jaehee.

It wasn’t because of the magic book in your room or the herbal smell in the apartment.

It also wasn’t hard getting used to you cooking with ingredients Jaehee had never heard of.

She didn’t have anything against your magic bowl, which helped you to foresee the future.

No, the thing she couldn’t handle at first was the c-fur of your black cat.

Days went by until she could first pat your four legged friend.

Indeed, the pet became her friend and Jaehee thought that the animal itself resembled more of a human being than some people themselves.

Jaehee simply loved to live with you, and the witchy stuff you were into, made her get used to it.

She even began to believe in magic.

Things you told her came true. You even once made her feel better when she was sick with a magical ritual.

And ever since Jaehee met you, she kind of saw the whole world differently…

Saeyoung

Saeyoung couldn’t believe what he read in your data back then when he did a background check on you.

You studied herbal medicine and opened a witchy shop a few years after you graduated high school.

You were even Korea's most known witch.

The way you let other people come in and sit down on your comfortable couch, trying to figure out what would await him or who.

He also never liked the amount of old books you had or the candles in your room which were always burning.

He also never believed that you could communicate with spirits on the other side.

So one day he tried to test you.

,,Can you speak to my mother?’’ he asked, making his brother, Saeran, curious too.

You nodded and closed your eyes as you took their hands and said a few words.

Suddenly you began to shake crazily, making Saeyoung feel bad for what he asked you.

But when you suddenly took back your hands and looked at them, you began to cry, making his face become softer.

He now knew that you never lied.

He knew what you saw.

,,Forget your mother. She… she doesn’t even regret… Most of the people I’ve met always regret their wrong doings. She is the first… I mean, I’m so sorry…’’ you whispered and hugged the two brothers, making Saeyoung finally trust you and also making him feel interested in everything you knew about.

i am on day 3? anywho i think i missed some stuff from day 1 bc i guess it based on real time- which i have no clue like how the timing works on this but whatever.

i am NOT here for the cat slander 😤 just bc the weird capitalist guy has a cat shouldn't mean that aLL THE OTHER CHARACTERS SHOULD HAVE A VENDETTA AGAINST CATS ???

anywho i figured out there's different routes and stuff? so this is gonna be a lot more involved than i expected 🥴 but wHATEVEr i'm going for Jaehee first she deserves better- ALSO MY EXCITEMENT WHEN I REALIZED SHE WAS AN OPTION??? OFF THE CHARTS.

there's apparently seven endings each??? or maybe i'm misinterpreting the "0/7" thingy. im trying to stay away from any spoilers bc i haven't been able to play something 100% genuinely blind in a LOOOONG time- but my small goblin brain wants all the answers immediately.
