So, what’s going on here?!

We're making a fanzine with one mission: To pay homage to those who came before us in this wonderful, timeless fandom that is Star Trek. The goal is to produce something that will be directly comparable to the fanzines of old; Typed on typewriters, printed & copied at a print shop (yes, even those pages), bound by hand, and sent to recipients in the mail. There are some aspects that may not translate to the 2020s, but we will try our best to be as authentic as possible. Luckily, we've secured involvement from several of the lovely women who were actually there making zines in the 70s, 80s, and 90s to guide us :) More on this will be announced soon!

Will the zine have a theme?

Not exactly, but it will exclusively feature Star Trek: The Original Series (+ films). This is not done to exclude AOS, SNW, or other Treks, but rather to celebrate the one that started it all. However, it will be a K/S slash zine (mcspirk also welcome!) so if you're not into seeing Kirk and Spock smooch, this one might not be for you ;)

Will it be explicit?

Yes :) How explicit will depend entirely on our artists and authors. Purchase age will be strictly 18+.

What is the timeline?

The 60th anniversary of Star Trek is September 8th, 2026. So while the official release is TBD, it will be around this time. Fics (and other writing, like poetry) will need to be finished earlier than artwork so we have time to organize companion illos. We also need ample time to type everything by hand on our typewriters, leaving room for broken equipment and/or user error (both of which are equally likely to happen). We expect assembly to take several months since us editors are doing this for the first time and also have jobs/families/school to think about. Once we have a more concrete timeline, that will be shared directly with our contributors to include deadlines and check-ins.

How much will the zine cost?

To be perfectly clear, this project is 100% nonprofit. That is very important to us not just for legal reasons, but moral ones. This means the cost of the zine will not exceed what was put into the materials, assembly, postage, etc. Similarly sized zines in 1970 were in the range of $3-$5, which is about $25-$40 today. We will do everything in our power to keep the price as low as we possibly can.

How can I get a copy?

We will make several announcements leading up to sign ups. As of right now, it is very likely we will have to limit the zine to < 200 copies. After some time has passed we will release it digitally, so don't fret if you're not able to get your hands on one! If there’s enough interest we may also do a second publication :)

How do I become a contributor/Why wasn't I asked to contribute?

As of right now, we do not have an open submission process. We would love to include EVERY piece of art, but with a physical zine we are limited by physical space, so we will have to be more discerning than we might like. As time goes on and the table of contents is decided we will announce more opportunities to contribute, so follow the blog to be aware of those! You can always feel free to DM us if you're interested, but we can't guarantee there will be room for everyone who does this. If your idea doesn't fit exactly, we'll try our best to find a way for you to be a part of it.

I was asked to contribute, but I haven't heard anything. Should I be worried?

No!!! We are working diligently to get everything set up, we promise. We have not forgotten about you <3 Kat (spirk-trek) is dealing with difficulties on Tumblr at the moment, in that she's unable to send or receive messages. If you're trying to get ahold of her please do so through this blog or on discord (katruyck) until further notice.

How else can I help/get involved?

First of all, thank you for asking. This kind of question really warms our hearts! If we decide to take donations of any kind, we will share that further down the line. This would be to cover costs only, and any excess would be donated to fanlore or other archival efforts. We won't do this if we don't have to, and would really rather not. If you're interested in taking a more involved position in the process, please message us about becoming a mod, especially if you're good with discord, have experience making physical zines, have a working typewriter, or are really passionate about fanzine history like we are!

10 more Liu Yuning songs I love

Ask Heaven (天问), 2021 OST opening theme song for Word of Honor Why it's good: this is probably the first Liu Yuning song I heard (without knowing who he was), since I watched Word of Honor when it came out on Netflix. To me, this is the song that proves Liu Yuning is the best there is at wuxia/jianghu songs. Also, I think even non-Chinese speakers can hear how every single line rhymes at the end (ending in "ao").

2. When I Met You (当遇见你), 2020 OST closing credits song for Skate Into Love Why it's good: this is different from any other Liu Yuning song I've heard - almost unbearably cute and sweet. I first heard it when I watched Skate Into Love, and I was really surprised to discover later on that this was him. I really like the vocal flourishes. This shows off another side of him and another set of his skills.

3. Looking for You (寻一个你), 2022 OST love theme for Love Between Fairy and Devil Why it's good: another song I loved before knowing Liu Yuning sang it. I think this it's fairly universally agreed that this is one of his best OSTs.

4. Promise (如约), 2019 Why it's good: it's quiet, contemplative, and philosophical. One of those sad-sounding songs that recognizes the humanity in everyone. It's just really moving.

5. Love at First Sight (一爱如故), 2021 OST love theme song for Hao Du and Leyan in The Long Ballad Why it's good: it's Hao Du and Leyan's song! Plus, it's super dramatic and he sounds great when he gets into his high range at the climax.

6. I Wish (惟愿), 2024 OST closing credits song for The Story of Pearl Girl Why it's good: it's Duan Wu and Yan Zijing's song! Plus, I love that it starts out so low at the beginning and slowly ascends. His voice is beautiful in this song. I never skip the closing credits when I'm watching this drama.

7. Destiny (造化), 2021 OST character song for Wei Wuxian in the Mo Dao Zu Shi donghua series Why it's good: such an interesting composition - really unusual melody. Love the orchestra behind it, too. Liu Yuning said recording this song almost killed him, it was so difficult to sing. He pulled it off, though, and it sounds great!

8. Born to Die (向死而生), 2024 OST for Burning Flames Why it's good: another one that shows off his vocal skills really well. He said singing it made him feel 一点儿想死 ("a little like dying," a pun on the title), so it's another difficult song he pulled off!

9. Heritage (传承), 2021 promotional song for the Palace Museum Why it's good: really nice gufeng (traditional Chinese motif/style) song where he uses at bit of pseudo-Chinese opera falsetto (starts at about 0:45).

10. Till the End (啊默契), 2019 Why it's good: another Liu Yuning classic rocking climax. I just love it when he rocks out! Plus, if you want to watch him laying on the beach with waves crashing over him, check out the MV (about 3:18)!

Introduction —

Dear reader, let's face it, winter is, let's say, a somewhat "sad" time. The sky is shedding tears everywhere, and we want to feel a little warmer at that moment, that is, included. With that in mind, I brought songs and a film that will help you feel this "feeling", called winter, stronger.

In my vast experience with music, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that the two best albums to listen to in winter are nothing else, nothing less than "folklore" and "evermore" by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

No Unofficial Hugo Book Club Blog, está em curso uma retrospectiva da categoria de "Best Dramatic Presentation" dos Prémios Hugo - já percebi que vou ter muito que ler nos próximos tempos, pois a série anda a ser escrita desde 2020 (!). Mas hoje destaco a mais recente entrada desta série, relativa aos prémios de 1983 que incidiram sobre um dos melhores anos de sempre do cinema de ficção científica e fantasia: 1982. Vejamos: Blade Runner, The Thing, E.T. The Extraterrestial, The Dark Crystal, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Tron, The Secret of Nimh... e porventura mais alguns, fora do cinema americano, que me escapam agora. Vale muito a pena ler esta retrospectiva, ainda que tenha de discordar num ponto: The Dark Crystal é um excelente filme, e se é certo que o protagonista não é nada de especial, Aughra e os Skeksis serão tudo menos esquecíveis.

No seu blogue/newsletter, Andrew Liptak aborda a crescente procura por edições especiais de livros, fenómeno a que as redes sociais, onde a imagem é privilegiada, não serão de todo alheias. Imagino que um livro bonito fique melhor na fotografia ou no vídeo do que o mass market paperback que ser encontra nas estantes das livrarias, mas não me posso pronunciar muito sobre isso: é uma realidade que não conheço, a de booktoks e afins (mas tudo o que gerar novos leitores é bem-vindo). Dito isto, não sou alheio ao fenómeno: já comprei vários livros que desconhecia apenas e só pela capa, e se durante anos adquiri sobretudo trade paperbacks, hoje em dia dou por mim a escolhar ocasionalmente alguns exemplares de capa dura, sobretudo quando já conheço os autores e tenciono ler os livros pouco depois de terem saído (Simon Jimenez, Vajra Chandrasekera ou Nnedi Okorafor são compras imediatas, por exemplo). E por colecção, claro, e por apreciar formatos físicos. Enfim, desde que os paperbacks continuem a ser abundantes e acessíveis, está tudo bem.

Since starting my journey of self care back in like, 2020, I finally have all my cavities fixed! Yes, it took 4 years to fix like, 13-15 cavities (which also included 1 root canal, 4 wisdom teeth removal, plus a regular tooth extraction.)

Because dental insurance has a yearly max and dental work is expensive.

I still need at least 1 crown, if not 2, but they will have to wait until next year.

You may ask how I got so bad. Well, poor dental hygine as a kid, worse as a teen, very rare trips to the dentist who only berated me ao I had anxiety going back.

It took the work of two amazing dentists who did their best *not* to lecture me when giving tips about dental care. And also my new dentist has a neat suction dam thing so I don't have to taste the bits of tooth, blood, and whatever else.

Also, headphones with music and they gave me stress balls to hold/play with.

My mouth is still fucked up and I dislike my smile, but short of having facial reconstruction where they break my lower jaw and my maxilla to fix the mismatched alignment (no, braces aren't gonna cut this overbite), that ain't going to change.

But I wanted to be healthy, not beautiful. One does not equal the other.

I think Domi. I'm an introvert, so it takes me a while to warm up to people, but he seems easy to talk to. He's smart and loves nature and I'm a biologist, so we could gush about random animal facts. I bet he would be an amazing hiking buddy as well! I was also a fan of boybands at one point, so he can blast his playlist during car rides and I would actually sing along. I prefer simple, clean designs, so my favorites are Shanghai, Paris and Miami

I mean, I MEAN… don't know if you've heard about this Swiss man(? He had a quite prolific career; won a few Masters, got 20 Grand Slams, and went on to play his last match alongside his biggest rival. He appears smooth and suave, but he's a goofball at heart and turns into a giggling mess whenever Rafa is around(? Yeah, he'll always be my all time favorite

I guess Ben Shelton seems nice(? Tbh I haven't followed him much but he gives off puppy energy (Fisher called him a border collie and I think that's accurate).

I haven't really gotten attached to new players other than Andrey, but he's not exactly 'new’ anymore lol

24. favourite match outfit?

Depends on the player, of course, but I will always love Rafa's sleeveless shirts. Particularly the bright pink one form AO 2020 <3

Already answered to this one too but there are so many moment moments I felt happy: AO final in 2022 is my favorite recent match, RG final 2022 too with papa Rafa and baby Casper, the US Open final in 2020 was so powerful (oh Domi, I miss you 😪), etc.

Sonoridades 2025 na Vila das Aves: quatro propostas de qualidade ímpar prometem atuações incríveis

A oitava edição do Sonoridades irá novamente ocupar o Centro Cultural Municipal de Vila das Aves, tal como nas edições anteriores. Este ano acontecerá de 1 a 4 de maio. Tem início na próxima quinta-feira aproveitando o feriado nacional em que se celebra o Dia do Trabalhador.

A organização está ao encargo, como vem sendo hábito, da Câmara Municipal de Santo Tirso. Já a direção artística e produção cabe à 1bigo – Artistas e Eventos, promotora também responsável pelo evento em anos transatos.

Este ano, pela primeira vez, o Sonoridades tem apoio do headLiner como Media Partner. O headLiner marcou presença nos quatro concertos realizados em 2024 e em dois na edição de 2023. As reportagens podem ser visualizadas aqui.

Rita Vian no Sonoridades em 2024 - Foto de Alexandra Fernandes Rita Vian, André Henriques, Márcia, Luis Severo ou os Best Youth são alguns dos nomes mais sonantes que já visitaram o Sonoridades em anos anteriores. Proporcionaram atuações marcantes e elevaram o nível do evento. Talentos emergentes da cena nacional passaram igualmente pela vila pertencente a Santo Tirso tais como, por exemplo, Bicho Carpinteiro, Sequin ou :Papercutz.

Além de nomes mais conhecidos do público em geral, o Sonoridades privilegia também o talento emergente pelo que as escolhas para o certame são sempre uma mistura de ambos. Curiosamente Sonoridades Emergentes foi o nome inicialmente utilizado como designação oficial em 2016.

O cardápio para os próximos dias 1, 2, 3 e 4 de maio é igualmente bastante apetecível.

CACHUPA PSICADÉLICA

Nascido e criado na ilha de São Vicente (Cabo Verde), Lula's foi criança nos anos 80 e apaixonou-se pelo rock de Seattle na adolescência, num Mindelo de roqueiros latinos. De repente, deu por si a estudar nas Caldas da Rainha e, alguns projetos musicais depois, encontrou-se na encruzilhada da sua Cachupa Psicadélica, saída das entranhas de Cabo Verde, nação cultural, levando-o a ser nomeado na categoria de Artista Musical do Ano nos prémios “Somos Cabo Verde – Melhores do Ano”. Até à data, conta com dois discos editados: “Último Caboverdiano Triste” (2015) e “Pomba Pardal” (2019). Cachupa Psicadélica tem colaborado com uma série de artistas, entre os quais Branko (Buraka Som Sistema), Cristina Branco e Mayra Andrade.

No SONORIDADES, Lula's irá levantar o véu sobre algumas das novidades preparadas para o muito aguardado novo disco, do Cachupa Psicadélica, a editar em 2025.

B FACHADA

Na música popular portuguesa do século XXI não há outra figura como B Fachada, o nome artístico de Bernardo Fachada, compositor, multi-instrumentista, produtor. Nascido em 1984, estudou música no Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa e aprendeu piano. Mais tarde, frequentou a escola do Hot Clube de Portugal e, na Universidade, cursou Estudos Portugueses. Desde 2007 tem-se notabilizado por um espantoso, e até certo ponto impiedoso, ritmo de edições, através do qual frequentemente subverte o cânone e converte os dogmáticos, baralha as expetativas e expetora a maralha, coça rótulos, caça ruturas.

Entre formatos físico e digital, lançou cinco EPs, três miniálbuns charneira e sete registos de longa-duração (entre os quais, a obra-prima “Rapazes e Raposas” lançada sem aviso prévio neste ano biruta de 2020).

Apresentou-se nas mais emblemáticas salas de espetáculo portuguesas, mas muitos recordam com mais carinho as atuações divulgadas em cima da hora, em inesperados espaços que continuamente se esgotam.

MISS UNIVERSO

‘Miss Universo’ nasce das suas raízes, mas floresce na procura da sua semente. Criada por André Ivo e Afonso Branco, a banda estreou-se com os singles "Ser Português" e “Canção da Rua”, até que em outubro do ano passado editou o álbum “Manifesto do Jovem Moderno”.

Composto por oito canções, o disco expõe no seu esplendor o casamento entre a tradição e a vanguarda, num cruzamento entre velhos ritmos e novas melodias. Uma janela sonora aberta ao cancioneiro revolucionário com a dose certa de contemporaneidade.

Ainda na casa dos vinte anos, André Ivo e Afonso Branco cresceram rodeados de música, em famílias ligadas ao meio: o primeiro, neto do fadista José Manuel Rato, e Afonso Branco neto do músico e compositor José Mário Branco.

Músicos como Manel Cruz, Fausto Bordalo Dias, José ‘Zeca’ Afonso, José Mário Branco e o projeto Criatura são referências comuns a ambos nas músicas, e acabaram por se irem “cimentando, à medida que o projeto foi crescendo”.

BIA MARIA

+ GRUPO CORAL DE VILA DAS AVES

“Qualquer Um Pode Cantar” é o álbum de estreia de Bia Maria, publicado no final de 2024. Marca o ponto de inflexão entre o ambiente sonoro em que deu os primeiros passos — algures entre o canto popular, o fado e a bossa nova — e uma nova fome de mundo.

É um disco de pop comunitário, que faz jus ao maior lema da ainda curta carreira da artista, nascida e criada em Ourém, o de “escreviver”. É um conjunto de letras perspicazes e afiadas, canções que cantam não só as suas ânsias mais pessoais, como as ânsias de uma geração de mulheres à procura do seu lugar no início da vida adulta.

 O disco “Qualquer um pode cantar” sucede a três EPs editados em seu nome, entre 2019 e 2022. Neste concerto, Bia Maria contará com a participação especial do Grupo Coral de Vila das Aves.

No no, I guess he meant that he hadn't played Roland Garros yet☺️ The interview is from March 2020, so he played the qualies in Wimbledon in 2019, had his first slam main draw appearance at the US Open (he lost to Wawrinka), reached R2 at the AO. Then COVID happened and Roland Garros was postponed! Funny thing is, in October 2020 he actually reached his best slam result there, making the QFs (he lost to Rafa)😭

I still think that RG is his least favorite slam, probably. I remember a (video) interview from maybe 2022/2023 (?) where they asked him to choose between RG and Wimbledon and between US Open and AO. He chose Wimbledon and US Open🤔

New Zealand has no government religion and is very welcoming to all religions and diversity. During the 2018 census, 49% of New Zealanders classified themselves as not belonging to any religion. However, Christianity was the largest religious group among those who did identify with a faith. With this secular view of the world being very prominent in New Zealand, religious affiliation continues to decline.

While New Zealand is not very religious, it is still very common to celebrate religious traditions like Christmas and Easter. However, Māori still hold traditional religion very close. It is called Te Ao Māori, which is best described as a philosophy based on a connection to nature.

One major thing emphasized in Te Ao Māori is Tīkanga, which is what we would consider a conscience. Māori believe it was given to them by a higher power, like their ancestors guiding them from the afterlife. It is one of the key principles they follow and develop throughout life.

With New Zealand’s secular beliefs, social justice and human rights are prioritized. As I mentioned in Post 2, New Zealand legalized same-sex marriage and has one of the highest rates of people identifying as homosexual, as well as the highest percentage of LGBTQ+ government officials. Additionally, euthanasia was legalized in 2020. Both of these emphasize that New Zealand wants its people to make their own choices in alignment with their beliefs.

Attitudes toward death vary. Many New Zealanders see it as a natural part of life and focus more on celebrating life rather than mourning. Māori, however, practice tangihanga, where they tell stories and mourn for longer periods. This practice is one of the longest-lasting traditions. Even if a Māori person is Catholic, which is common, their funeral is still typically held in this traditional way.

New Zealand’s worldview is classified as secular, with its freedom to express religion and other identities, such as sexual orientation. Because of this, New Zealanders feel free to express themselves however they choose, without fear of persecution.

BST, também conhecido como Best Boys, é um grupo masculino sul-coreano formado pela empresa Great Hits Music em 2019. O grupo é composto por sete membros: Muse 1, Muse 2, Muse 3, Muse 4, Muse 5, Muse 6 e Muse 7. BST conquistou o sucesso internacional rapidamente, quebrando recordes mundiais, e suas conquistas levaram o grupo a ser o número um na lista Forbes Korea Power Celebrity em 2022, que classifica as celebridades mais poderosas e influentes da Coreia do Sul. Pela indústria de k-pop ser muito rígida, os membros do BST são proibidos pela empresa de se envolverem em relacionamentos e escândalos públicos. Caso isso aconteça, pode resultar na expulsão de um dos membros!

Eles competem diretamente com o Big Time Dimension para a boyband mais popular do mundo, o que gera muitas brigas entre os seus fandoms. Mas a maior briga de fandoms do BST é, provavelmente, com o fandom do PINKISH.
