Mint Chip Ice Cream (And Other Flavors)
Lestappen | 3 321 words | Ice cream shop owner!Charles AU | T
For @thearchercore and her anons, who inspired this whole thing.
The ice cream shop owner!Charles, F1 driver!Max fic has now been posted on AO3!
You can read the full fic on AO3 here, or in the original Tumblr post here.
Summary:
“I’d like three scoops of vanilla ice cream, please.”
Charles doesn’t even stop what he’s doing. Doesn’t even look at him. “We’re all out of vanilla.”
Max stares. At Charles, then at the almost full tub of vanilla ice cream, with its little sign labeling it as vanilla sticking out of the fluffy ice cream.
“No, you’re not.”
“Yes, we are.”
“Charles, I can see the vanilla ice cream. It’s right there,” Max insists, pointing at the flavor through the display glass. As if Charles isn’t completely aware of its existence, as if he’s not just being a little shit and punishing Max for something that isn’t even remotely his fault.
Charles pauses in his bustling to look at Max. Then, he follows the length of Max’s arm to where his finger is pointing directly at the vanilla. His gaze returns to Max’s eyes as he says, deadpan: “That is only a display ice cream.”
---
OR: Charles owns an ice cream shop in Milan, Max is an F1 driver. Their paths cross, and Max finds himself slightly obsessed with more than just the heavenly vanilla ice cream Charles sells.

The second bunch of Mossclan cats! These are characters for my upcoming warrior cats rabies comic! Follow if you’re interested!
Willowfur ran away from her two-legs as a young kit, only to explore, but when she’d returned to the campgrounds they were gone. Skittish, she didn’t allow any other two legs to grab her. Eventually her hunger led her to try to hunt. She ran into a patrol of MossClan, who took her in, to her surprise, admiring her hunting ability in the tall grass. She met Foxclaw, and they swiftly fell in love.
Minnowpaw and Littlepaw are their only surviving kits, and willowfur was determined to be barren after her last few died, being delivered too early, and too small to survive. Minnowpaw excels at swimming and fishing, while his brother, littlepaw, struggles to perform warrior duties while the other apprentices far younger than him surpass him.
(Munchkin cats are unethically bred, and as such, disabilities in back, height, birthing rates, and bone fragility are side effects. These cats aren’t made to be cute, but representative of the disabilities we give to our cats by continued breeding.)

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – ASSISTANT DIRECTOR AU KORNPROM'S CAMEO (BUT IT'S ACTUALLY A CALLOUT TO MY SCHOOL PRESIDENT)
When Assistant Director Au appeared in Moonlight Chicken as a bubble tea vendor at Ep.5 [2/4] 2.05, it got me wondering whether it was simply the cast and crew having a bit of fun (as with a number of the vendor cameos in Bad Buddy), or whether there was any greater significance (as with GMMTV producers/directors and their cameos in other series before – see this link here).
After all, Au Kornprom Niyomsil is not the director of Moonlight Chicken. But the cameo, while brief and unannounced, reads like a purposeful flourish – Director Aof saved Assistant Director Au's appearance for just a few seconds in the very last half-minute of the scene, so as to maximize the impact of this Aha! moment. This lends the cameo some weight, and I think there is meaning behind it too.
It’s especially significant that the one buying the bubble tea (chaa nom khai mook, or ชานมไข่มุก) is Fourth, in character as teenager Li Ming. And what Li Ming says to Jim at Ep.5 [2/4] 1.57 ("It's not for you") is significant too.
The connection that Fourth and Assistant Director Au have is that the latter is Fourth's director in My School President, which not coincidentally also broadcast its finale the same week as Assistant Director Au's cameo in Moonlight Chicken.
Now MSP is a feelgood vehicle clearly directed at a younger crowd. It's been crafted for maximum teenybopper appeal (does anyone still use this term though? 🤷♂️), with photogenic leads, lots of earcandy songs, cutesy sound effects, gigil/geram-inducing props (that chinchilla hoodie! 😍), uncomplicated storytelling and loads of sweet, affirming moments. All formulaic elements that management and marketing must be beaming at, that are likely to up MSP's money-making popularity in the teen segment and bring in cash from associated sidelines as well (young teens being the most willing to fork out cash for collateral merchandise, or so the current wisdom goes).
I'm not intending to suggest that teens are incapable of appreciating darker, heavier fare, mind you. But I do think the studios are keenest on less demanding, inoffensive output that they can then spin out into all sorts of income streams (music and merchandise being the most obvious, but also concerts and fanmeets as well). This would be logical for any commercial enterprise (which is what they are, after all) but if any among their stable of writers and directors are approaching their work with social consciousness too, well, there are bound to be clashes when pressure mounts to go in a lighter direction.
So to me, MSP is a bit of a rainbow-colored unicorn, a rare confluence of both these drivers (commercial orientation and social conscience, albeit applied with a gentler touch). Underneath its sugary BL theatrics are also positive messages aimed at bolstering the self-esteem and awareness of LGBTQ+ youth still coming to grips with the realities of their identities in cishet-dominated society. That its primary audience is not made up of adults may align nicely with management directives on the commercial front, but it also allows for its underlying message to be targeted as well.
When Li Ming says (a little too smugly) "It's not for you", with MSP's director then handing him the boba, the message is that it's the younger crowd that's being prioritized (not in Moonlight Chicken, ironically, but in My School President).
MSP is especially for teenagers just starting to find their own way in life, not so much older adults who've already figured out (at least partly) who they are and how they fit into society (although everyone is quite welcome to watch along; one message of BL is surely "no gatekeeping" as long as you carry no ill-intent 🥰).
So this is the message of Assistant Director Au's cameo, I think – just as his bubble tea vendor persona is providing teens Li Ming and Heart with a sweet, tasty treat that they will enjoy, as director of MSP (and possibly future projects in the same vein) he's doing much the same thing by delivering a carefully-crafted confection designed to be especially palatable for a younger audience.
And just as bubble tea is known for containing its addictive pearls, teen-oriented BLs like MSP (created by Director Au's hand) will also contain something more substantial for you to chew on within (noting that the word khaimook or pearl also carries the connotation of precious value).
To older folk who might not quite appreciate the offering for what it is (like when Jim says "I don't want it" at Ep.5 [2/4] 1.53) – well, a teen show is not really intended for you anyway (which is the meaning behind Li Ming's retort – he's not just being sassy, although that does have significance for Moonlight Chicken's plot too 😊). Jim's of course welcome to consume it if he wants or likes. But I think his tastes swing toward the more meaty and savory anyway; this is Moonlight Chicken after all. 💖
PS
At the time of writing this, I still hadn't watched Episodes 5 and 6 in full. But this scene was giffed and commented on so much I had to at least watch this bit. I was waiting for Director Aof to put in a cameo too, so this is what I wrote at first:
I think there's a strong chance it will happen. But what will it mean though? 🤷♂️
Well, we now know that it actually happened too, within the same episode! Thanks to @hughungrybear for pointing this out – see this link here. 🥰
I'll save Director Aof's cameo for another post though. I have thoughts about it – something rings ominous about how it was presented, and I'm not sure yet if we should wait for more to be revealed. 🤔

The absolute audacity of my work to keep me away from tumblr/my laptop the day (and day after) the Our Skyy 2 Bad Buddy trailer drops.
I mean, the Slutphobia.
Anyway, I'm about to reblog the entire Bad Buddy tag (here's your warning!) and I am resolutely NOT making any predictions...instead here's a poll for ya...
Or an eleventh -> Something else entirely not yet envisaged beyond the scope of my current imagination (comment in notes or write in tags).
Of course, you may answer this with the thing you think YOU will go most feral over as well.
#bad buddy#our skyy 2#only putting this on for a day so get voting!#this is me NOT predicting anything#I also wanted to add -> Pat and Pran looking after the young children in pha pun dao#and -> cameos by other our skyy 2 actors (kahotung/fourth/gemini/AOF/AU/pawin/UNCLE TONG/junior#and also -> dissaya knowing about Pat and Pran but turning a blind eye#and of course -> ming getting his comeuppance#okay I need to stop#play along!

a) THIS IS AMAZING
and
b) pulling some things out of the comments:
Kong's dad in SOTUS S plays the CEO of a materials firm, very similar to his role in BBS! - @waitmyturtles
and
HE’S WEARING THE SAME SHIRT FROM SOTUS S TO BBS 😭😭😭😭 - @waitmyturtles
and
c) pulling a few things that @waitmyturtles wrote in a dm to me:
It’s really meaningful because he was the first GMMTV BL dad!
This really is a wonderful easter egg and more evidence to how much detail was put into this show. I will fight tooth and nail to defend all the seemingly arbitrary and 'ridiculous' outfit choices and then shout from my soapbox about how they ALL very much had a reason behind them.
Ready for some DEEP Old GMMTV Challenge shiz?
I'm watching Bad Buddy, episode 3, where the boys are at Logtech to pitch the bus stop. The CEO is speaking.
And I got this flashback to SOTUS S, and I was like, yeah, this conversation is a lot like all the ones they had in SOTUS S, like, putting together engineering projects, making orders, and everything. And then I was like -- WAIT, DAMN! That dude is Kongpob's father!
And I checked, and I am pretty sure it's the same dude!
(That's Krist Perawat in SOTUS S to the left.)
I don't have a name on this actor, MDL and Wikipedia are failing me. BUT: if we needed MORE PROOF that Bad Buddy was speaking to SOTUS/SOTUS S, then, here we go!
I'm cackling -- I can't believe this tiny LITTLE tidbit would have passed me by, if not for the fact that I watched SOTUS S for the OGMMTVC project. Aof really gave us easter eggs in BBS….

more ex-morning questions: so if I write ex-morning fic is that RPF also???? or is it that if I write KristSingto RPF it’s no longer RPF because they’ve conceptually been transported into the fanon space?? Or is ex morning being an AU somehow mean that fanworks of ex-morning won’t count as RPF you know because of the technicality of it all.
Aof is truly the fujoshi of our times.

No no no...I've been sitting on this thought as well since I saw someone (maybe kayla?) joke about it being pran and tian coming out of the bushes. And I was thinking of all the funny ways it could go...and my first thought was the clich: what if it's built up to be a scary tiger but then it's just a cute tiny creature (I don't know what exists in Thai forests)?...but then my SECOND thought was, what if it's Rang, and Pat mistakes him for Korn...and then my brain couldn't go any further.
So tldr, I want it to be Rang who comes out of the bushes.
@dimplesandfierceeyes
The lack of Drake is deafening.. :/
#although I don't think it will be#because that's not the type of humour aof uses#but dammit I want to be wrong this time#bad buddy#our skyy 2#and hey. if they can use au as a brand new character and not say anything about him being toto#surely they can have drake be rang and no one bats an eye?#atots

I am curious for your perspective on the way the OF creators are interacting with fans and have even admitted to editing the show based on fan reactions. It strikes me as an unusual level of interaction and capitulation, though of course TV is a live medium that is nearly always responsive to reactions to some extent. My preference is for a lot less of this kind of thing, but I know you have experience with direct interaction with media creators and have found it enhances your experience sometimes. What do you make of how these dynamics are showing up in OF and the effect it’s having on the show?
TV and Critic Background
So, I am actually the worst person to talk to if you think the creators should be quiet about their work, because I really enjoy talking to directors, producers, actors, cinematographers, and especially editors about their work. I often go to film festivals just to talk to the creators about their processes.
I've also been in the TV space a really long time, and I am used to this kind of behavior. I don't think a lot of folks who are in BL are used to being in the process of TV itself, and I think a lot of people have let the Netflix binge model inform the way they view TV. TV is not like movies. When you get a movie, you are seeing the end product of filming, editing, test screenings, re-edits, etc. TV is usually only an episode or two ahead of the viewers.
It's extremely normal for a show to respond to feedback when characters test well. The 100 did this with Jasper. He was supposed to die in the pilot when that spear entered his chest, but he tested well with audiences so they revived him.
Fun Fact: This is why Kiseki: Dear to Me didn't just move their release schedule up when episode 8 was leaked early. They probably weren't finished assembling episode 9.
I followed Sense8 through its entire development process all the way from rumors and then J. Michael Stracynski's posts about it, to the things Lana and Lily said about it, to the commentary from the cast.
I have a special hatred for Rick Behrman over Star Trek.
I absolutely hate Russel T. Davies because of Cucumber.
I bailed on Supernatural because of the way the writers condescended to us at comicon after killing Kevin.
I know some fans are upset about the idea that scenes they wanted to see got cut, but I was there for Noah Galvin opening his fucking mouth to talk shit about other actors at ABC who were playing beloved gay characters and that subsequently getting The Real O'Neals canceled. The show had a very short second season and I feel forever salty about that.
What does this mean for Jojo and Ninew and Den?
I actually think Jojo, Den, and Ninew are fine. I don't think they usually poopoo on valid reads from what I've seen, and mostly they're having fun with the fans, too. I just don't think people are used to the creators being so honest about how feedback affects the editing process.
I think this is the first time we've had a big show in a while where the creator was fairly active on socials about the show. Aof and Au are usually pretty quiet when their shows are airing, and only give small tidbits while they show is airing. Jojo is silly and likes to play with fans. Den is feisty and has a gay agenda to pursue.
Truly, I don't think Jojo and friends are that bad about anything with this show, because they're mostly just laughing and stating things that are obvious to people who pay attention to how the sausage is made.
Shipping
That being said, the biggest struggle OF is having is shipping. The FK girlies are so loud and their heavy breathing has likely influenced the way Jojo and friends decided to write Ray. The FB girlies are so into them that it's made Jojo and them dial back some of their Top content because the audience hates him so much. Only Boston and Nick feel like they've made it through the shipping gamut intact because Neo and Mark aren't bringing a bunch of preexisting shippers to the table.
Coming off of episode 10, you can see this plainly with the nasty4nasty dynamic with Boston and Nick. The emotional core of their dynamic feels true, even down to the way their moments in the store mirror their first interactions again. Boston came in for service about his phone and intentionally showed Nick something on it.
I don't think Jojo has ever had to work with multiple acting pairs that were big branded pairs prior to this, and this is only his second time really dealing with that. With Never Let Me Go, Pond and Phuwin weren't that big yet, and he wasn't threatening their ship with anything complicated. OF is challenging for people who just watch BL as fap material and have to deal with their faves not being easy people to parse.
As usual, we go back to that post that goes around all the time, thought I think the OP deleted it:
"Never ever be normal about fictional characters but please GOD be normal about the people who play them, I am begging you" -tumblr user mantorokk-writes
