avatar headcannons:
how many kids does he want?
neteyam x reader, lo'ak x reader, ao'nung x reader (gn!)
neteyam:
the most out of any other on this list, coming in with wanting five.
in the words of quaritch- "a whole litter."
just like his sa'nu and sempu, neteyam wants a big family, full of little ones.
lo'ak:
loves every single second of fatherhood.
whittles toys for his little ones, especially ones he remembers he or his siblings playing with growing up.
little wooden ikran, toruk, 'angtsìk- and ilu and tulkun, too.
can hold at least four of his kids at a time. one on each hip, baby in the sling on his front, and a toddler in the wrap on his back. worried he'll drop one if he tries all five.
five kids can be overwhelming, of course, but he'll never raise his voice at them- if he really needs to yell, he leaves the kelku for a minute to let out his frustration.
insists on braiding their hair himself. he loves to do it.
makes him feel more connected to his little one, twisting and braiding their hair as gently and carefully as he can.
most parents hate their kids crawling into bed with them. with all the limbs kicking and pressing into you all night, who can blame them?
but neteyam can barely sleep without an uncomfortable leg pressing into his back, anymore. it's how he knows all his little ones are here, all safe.
contrary to the some of the other headcannons i've seen on this site, i believe lo'ak would only like two children.
ao'nung:
he just wants a small, loving little family.
he decided on two for a reason, too.
lo'ak would have been perfectly fine with just one, but then he thought about it more.
lo'ak grew up with four others- his siblings, his best friends.
he wanted that for his little, too.
becomes so calm, so easy-going and soft around his children.
lo'ak can obviously be reckless- but when he's with his babies, he's calm. his focus is only on them.
his favorite part of fatherhood is play time. any game his kids want to play, he wants to play with them.
they want to pretend they're riding an ikran? climb on! they want to play in the water? look out, daddy's splashing!
always makes sure both of them are included in the game, too.
no one will be outcast in this family.
he honestly doesn't think about things like that. he would take a moment to think about it, deciding on three at the most.
it seems like a good number to him.
it's the number of kids his parents had, too, so that might be why he's so comfortable with it.
he definitely thinks four would be too many, but three? it just sounds perfect.
he's one of those dads that pretends to be all tough around others, but behind closed doors- he's absolutely melted.
bonus!
this man spoils them. and i mean that.
ao'nung is a fierce leader- strong and proud.
but if his little one were to tug on his clothes and ask for something? it's over. he's crumbled, gone, off to spoil his baby and give them anything they want.
i'm talking dessert before dinner, letting them stay up late playing, anything their little hearts desire.
also... he'd have all girls. he never specifically wanted a boy or girl, and obviously its not something you choose, but something about his genes, man. i'm telling you: three little daddy's girls.
spider:
one.
spider doesn't think he'd be a good father.
but there's still this want pushed to the back of his head- to one day have a baby of his own.
spider thinks he'd be a horrible father.
in reality, if spider ever ended up with a little one...
they'd be the most loved baby on that moon.
probably wouldn't put them down their whole infancy, preferring to have them curled up against his chest at all times.
he wouldn't spoil them- he's raise his little one to be independent, strong, their own person.
but he would also show them that they were loved unconditionally.
that no matter what- their father would always love them. always.

Hiii, how are you??
If its okay with you i would like to resquest a platonic yandere of either the Sully's or tonowari family(whichever you prefer) when their youngest child (reader) comes home injuries because of some bullies
How would they react??
(if you can't do it or don't feel comfortable its completely fine)
— 𝔀𝓱𝓮𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓰𝓮𝓼𝓽 𝓰𝓮𝓽𝓼 𝓱𝓾𝓻𝓽 — (sully family, tonowari family x platonic!reader) | separate
requested: yes
pairing: sully familly x gn!reader, tonowari family x gn!reader
tags: platonic, yandere, youngest sibling, youngest child, just a doting family
warnings: lowercase intended, mentions of torture but not elaborated, injuries
a/n: characters are aged up! hi there! i'm doing very well, thank you very much. i just came back from class and i got a few more ask after this so i'm very inspired in making and answering them. hope you enjoy this!
word count: 946
+ gif not mine. ctto.
sully family:
being the youngest in the sully family has its perks. having 5 protective older siblings i’m adding spider ‘cause i can is fun! y/n has friends to play with them, someone who looks after them when their parents aren’t available, and their life is never boring
but when they came home crying, their knees scraped and bleeding after being pushed by their bullies during the kid’s nursery (i imagine there’s a nursery class that is just the na’vi kids interacting for early socialization in the clan)
their knees hurt, and their elbow also scraped due to the impact of the push, just crying that so, so, and so pushed them during nursery
neytiri was fuming, to say the least. no one messes with her baby. no one
jake was trying to calm his mate, reminding her that those are just kids and they mess up from time to time. it’s the parents you should get mad at because they didn’t raise their kids right
neytiri would then blame the kids’ parents for raising rotten kids that bullied her youngest and would threaten the parents if their kids bully her baby again
jake, on the other hand, would threaten the livelihood of the parents. would hold their family’s place in the clan above their heads and wouldn’t hesitate to banish them. to hell if they get killed by the animals that lurked in the dark
kiri was cleaning up y/n’s booboos while neteyam held his baby sibling
lo’ak plans on tripping said kids by holding his foot out and acting like he didn’t do anything (petty but hey, it’s a small way to get back at the kids)
spider would distract y/n by talling them stories that happened back in the lab. they loved hearing all the sciency human stuff and hearing them from spider was fun and he would probably join lo’ak on the pettiness
tuk was quickly weaving some bracelets to help her baby sibling calm down. she will do anything and everything to help her only baby sibling out
if said bullies had older siblings that are learning to be a warrior or a tsahik, neteyam and kiri would sabotage them. neteyam would destroy the weapons that the siblings had created for the training while kiri would add herbs and slimes that messes up the medicine the siblings would create mo’at gets disappointed at the bullies’ siblings for messing up their works
but, if we say that y/n is younger than lo’ak by a year (around 13) and took tuk’s place as the youngest, that’s another story
jake and neytiri would be the last to know that they’re being bullied by other na’vi’s because y/n begged their siblings to not tell their parents
neteyam and lo’ak would beat those bullies up to a pulp. they didn’t care if their dad would tell them off afterward. what matters is that they don’t get to harm their siblings ever again
kiri would destroy their image if said bullies were training to be a tsahik. she would tell mo’at a lot of things that would slowly hurt their character then, later on, would be told off and not be thought by mo’at
spider would join neteyam and lo’ak at one point but then again, he’s small while teen na’vi’s were hella tall so he becomes neteyam and lo’ak’s hypeman
overall: the sully family wouldn’t mind beating a few na’vi’s up when protecting their youngest. sully’s stick together!
tonowari family:
y/n is the kid that didn’t have to do much to impress the family. they could just breathe and tonowari would throw a whole feast to celebrate it
ronal is a very doting mother. although a warrior and seen as a very serious tsahik, she would smile whenever she sees her youngest. also very protective. like, super duper protective that no one besides their family can interact with their youngest. if you do, she’d wave your head up on her spear and set it as a reminder to the rest that if you do mess with her youngest, you’ll be next
tonowari is much more doting than ronal but if the softer version. instead of being violent like his mate, he would rather let nature do the violence. why get the blood on your fingers when pandora can do the work? he didn’t want to hold his baby with the blood of their bullies
ao’nung is no different from their mother. but instead of giving the easier end, he would rather beat them up and keep them alive just to prolong to torture. torture = honoring his sibling’s existence
tsireya is the most normal of the bunch. but if she hears that her sibling is messed with, just knows the whole family is coming for their head. she would be with her sibling and distracting them while the family ‘talks’ with said bullies
so when one-day y/n comes home severely injured by her bullies, all hell broke loose
the parents of said bullies were held off by other metkayina’s while they watched ao’nung, rotxo, and a few other of their friends beat up the bullies
ronal was held back by tonowari because if he didn’t, ronal would’ve hurt the parents of the bullies or worse
tonowari eventually forcefully removed the family that tormented his youngest child because if he gives them a chance, his child might get hurt again and he’s not taking that risk
tsireya was tending y/n’s wounds and reassuring them that the bullies won’t hurt them again because their parents will send them away
tdrl: you hurt tonowari and ronal’s youngest, and you leave severely beaten up

Courting Rituals - Ao’nung
[ Ao’nung x Omatikaya!reader ]
Request: I like to think that na’vi do court their mates and it’s a different courting ritual depending on the tribe. The metkayina court their mates by showing off their skills in water and being close to them. Aonung courts the male reader by doing that. What he doesn’t know is that the male reader has also been courting him the omaticaya way. How the omaticaya court can be up to you, but my idea was that they show off the skills in the air and helping them in their things. Then both the male reader and aonung go to the spirit tree and confess and the it’s all romantic. You can change anything about the courting rituals.
Warnings: none
Word count: 1,516
Ao’nung was tired of your obliviousness to his attempts. It crossed his mind multiple times that the Omatikaya might do things differently, but it wasn’t as if he could just tell you he’d been trying to get your attention for the past couple weeks and that frustrated him.
Everyone else saw his sad attempts but you. Every time he’d stick to your side a little too close, everyone else left you alone. No one dared to try anything when the chief’s son made it very clear that he had his eyes on you. He couldn’t fathom how even his parents noticed, but you didn’t.
“Where are we going?” you asked, feeling the warm sand beneath your feet as you curiously trailed behind him.
The Metkayina gave no response and dove into the water, leaving you to follow after him.
It had barely been a few seconds after diving and he was already retrieving something in the distance.
‘What are you doing?’
Your hand gestures died down when you felt Ao’nung linger a little too close to you. He could feel the way your whole body tensed as he reached to tuck a flower behind your ear, and he was absolutely enjoying the reaction.
‘It symbolizes passion,’ Ao’nung informed nonchalantly, as if his face weren’t just inches away from yours a few seconds ago. ‘Keep up.’
He was already swimming past you and you could barely process what had just happened, let alone think of a response with the newfound finger talk he’d taught you.
Ao’nung’s small gesture left you even more confused than ever. You’d been fairly obvious with your intentions and he didn’t seem to even notice them, which had you assuming he wasn’t interested. But then he’d occasionally stick a little too close to your side, or separate you from the group just to tuck flowers behind your ear.
‘Are we supposed to be out here?’
‘Relax. We are still inside the wall.’
Just as you resurfaced to breathe, you saw Tsireya busy relocating a bunch of seagrass near the spirit tree, much to her brother’s annoyance. He enjoyed spending time with his sister, but now was the worst possible time she could show up.
Occupied with heaving yourself up to the rocky ground with the extra weight from your wet skin, you missed the way Tsireya’s eyes widened at the sight of you, her eyes subtly snapping to Ao’nung afterwards.
You were practically oblivious to the way she ogled at the flower tucked behind your ear, but you couldn’t deny the fact that there was a tense exchange between the two siblings.
“Here. Help me with these?” Not accepting any objections, she dropped seagrass into your arms which would’ve fallen to the wet floor if it weren’t for your quick reflexes.
“Tsireya,” Ao’nung grumbled, hoping you were too busy with the heavy weight of the seagrass in your arms to notice him.
You had your back faced to them, but you could hear the faint slap coming from behind you, followed by hushed whispers of disbelief.
“Ow. What?” You heard Ao’nung whisper loudly. There was no making out what his sister was saying and by the time you joined them, they’d already composed themselves.
“Come,” Tsireya said giddily as she dragged you away by the hand. Ao’nung was seething in irritation at the way Tsireya kept dragging you away from him. It was getting dark and this was supposed to be your moment. Your time alone with him. Yet here he was stuck separating piles of seagrass whilst your enthusiastic conversation with his sister in the distance rendered through his ears.
“Have you announced the village yet? I can’t believe my brother wouldn’t tell me that he’s chosen a future mate.” You froze at Tsireya’s sudden assumption.
“What? No- we’re not- he didn’t choose me.”
Tsireya’s frown and confusion at your words only seemed to fluster you even more.
Ao’nung didn’t mention anything about mates. Sure, he specifically flirted an awful lot today compared to his usual flirtatious self, but you didn’t think much of it.
“Ao’nung gave that to you, didn’t he?” Tsireya pointed to the flower that you’d forgotten you were wearing. “It’s a way of confessing feelings and attraction, and in most cases, it’s given as a way to say that they choose you as their mate for the future. The flower is a big leap and not just common banter.”
By the time she finished explaining, you were already slightly wide-eyed. You couldn’t tell if she was messing with you, but that was highly unlikely.
“Can we go now?” You heard Ao’nung groan right before you became aware of his presence behind you. Maybe it was just you, but he suddenly felt so close, and the way his chest was brushing against your back ever so slightly caused visible heat to creep up your face. Which of course, hadn’t gone unnoticed by Tsireya.
“Mhm. Thanks,” she mumbled quietly, too busy grinning at the amusing sight in front of her.
“Great. Let’s go,” Ao’nung hurriedly bid, tugging you away from his sister and into a farther alcove.
“Slow down,” you whined and pulled his hand to a stop, clearly annoyed with his antics. To be honest, you weren’t sure if you actually were annoyed. After your conversation with Tsireya, your heart wouldn’t stop threatening to leap out of your chest and it overwhelmed you to the point where standing near him became unbearable. It was irritating how you’d easily flush with his mere presence, which Ao’nung assumed was because of something wrong he did.
“Why do you look-”
“You said it symbolizes passion.”
The Metkayina stared at you cluelessly for a few seconds until your words finally rendered to his head. Tsireya.
“It does.”
“But that’s not why you gave it to me.”
“No.” The boy sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, casting his eyes to the glow of the spirit tree that illuminated the dark. He guided you onto the ground with him, dipping his feet in the water and you followed shortly after him. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for months. I knew I had to do something more obvious. But it doesn’t have to mean I chose you if you don’t want it to. It’s just a big move.”
“I don’t not want you to choose me. I’ve been doing the same.” His eyes flickered up to yours as you started. “Trying to get your attention.I was starting to think you were ignoring me. Well, until today.”
There was no mistaking the light that took over his features at your confession. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. You returned his feelings. After long months of constant signs and shows of affection. He wouldn’t be surprised if his entire village had caught on.
“You were flirting with me this entire time?”
“Yes, you idiot.”
Before you could throw every offensive insult you had at him, you clamped your mouth shut at something tickling your feet and looked down to the glowing source.
A bunch of small fishes playfully swirled around your feet, giving off an orange glow. You didn’t have to look to your right to feel the smile of slight disbelief Ao’nung wore at the sight.
“They like you.” The corner of his lips tugged upwards out of their own accord. You were too busy weaving your feet around the fish to hear him let alone notice how quiet everything’s gotten and how close Ao’nung was silently observing you.
“Huh?” You slowly tear your gaze off the captivating sight to face him and your breath caught itself in your throat when you found that he was already looking at you, his face lingering way too close.
When did he move to sit closer? You hadn’t even noticed his subtle movements, and Ao’nung wasn’t sure if he’d noticed either. He was always subconsciously drawn to you.
Feeling a spark of boldness, the Metkayina gently grabbed your chin with his fingers, not uttering a single word as he watched your lips slightly part at his actions. He was clearly satisfied with your reaction and took it as a sign to continue, closing the gap between you two by gently pressing his lips against yours.
You let out a surprised gasp and Ao’nung didn’t even try to hold back the smug grin you felt against your lips at the emitted sound. His tongue darted into your mouth the second your lips parted, hands wandering aimlessly across the length of your body.
“Eywa-“ the boy groaned as he reluctantly pulled away from you, the sound causing heat to rush up to the tip of your ears.
It took a few seconds longer than you’d expected to fully come back to your senses and process what had just happened, but when you looked at him, you found Ao’nung already gazing at you with a look you couldn’t decipher.
“Skxawng.” Now he just looked offended at the insult and the not so gentle punch you gave to his arm.
“What?”
“You could’ve given me that flower sooner.”

Masterlist
After breakfast, while Neytiri and Ronal went to talk with Nicté, both Y/n and Yolotli guided the boys around, showing them places they could go explore and such. The whole time, Y/n had been talking along with swearing in Yucatec, both Neteyam and Ao’nung had no idea what they had been saying, Yolotli had to translate to them, she apologized when Y/n had calledd them an insult such as ‘Idiota’, it was their own word for Skxawng.
The group of teens had arrived at a small opening in the forest, that was around where the volcano was. Some girls who they assumed were y/n’s friends tagged along, again speaking in Yucatec to one another. They kept looking at them males and saying things about them, some had been staring a bit to long at them, even giving them smiles and giggling when they caught the boys off guard.
“Okay, first, you must make a bond with the Nì’awve “ she said, turning to the woods and began to make a hissing noise, having her tongue between her teeth. Then movements from the bushes came, two large creatures came out. they were large snakes with coal colored skin that apparently was hard as the volcanic rock, they were almost as big as a Thanator. “You must bond with them, once the bond is done, then you will learn the ways of how to control fire” she said.
Y/n had been chating with her friends, then she saw that the Ni’awve had arrived, then stopped and said. “Le ba'ala' kun u jats'utsile' “ this should be fun, then they departed from her friends walked over next to Yolotli. “Who wants to go first? I mean unless you’re scared” they said making the other girls laugh. Yolotli gave them a warning look. Neteyam and Ao’nung looked at one another. “I’ll go” Neteyam said walking over.
“Okay, just stay calm” Yolotli said as she helped Neteyam get onto the beast. “Its important to have a good position” she said as she began to position him the proper way. Yolotli then carefully went behind the beast’s head and got a small antenna. “Here, make the bond” she said as Neteyam then grabbed his queue and attached it to the beasts. Then the Ni’awve began to shift harshly, but he held on tightly to the beasts. “Its okay, be calm” Yolotli said as Y/n was holding back laughter “you also, might want to hang on tightly” they said as then the Beast just took off.
Neteyam held onto it for dear life, the Ni’awve was going too fast, he tried to remain calm but the beasts movements were making it difficult. The beast continued to move fast and out of control, then out of no where the animal had thrown Neteyam off. He had landed on the floor hard, while he was laying on the floor in pain, he heard the group of girls and Y/n laughing their heads off.
“Neteyam!” Yolotli shouted as she ran over to the boy on the ground. “Are you okay?” she asked, helping him sit up. “Yeah, just... in pain” he said rubbing his back. “Its okay, I fell my first time too, would you like to try another day?” she asked then Neteyam shook his head. “No, I’ll do it again” he said as Yolotli nodded and helped him up, walking over to where the beast went, back to the group.
Y/n was still chuckling with tears in her eyes, Neteyam also noticed that Ao’nung was trying so hard not to laugh. “Sorry, its just” Ao’nung said as he then just laughed. Neteyam glared at him, this reminded him of the time when Lo’ak had fallen off his Ilu. “Are you going again or have you give up already?” y/n asked Neteyam who walked over back to the beast. “I’m going again” he said as Yolotli got a settle for the beast, she got it from one of the girls who was holding two saddles. Once she put the settle on the beast, Neteyam hopped on, sitting on the beast’s back. “Suit yourself” y/n said smirking at them. Yolotli gave Neteyam an apologetic look “be careful” she said.
Neteyam connected his queue into the beast, then the beast took off again. This time Neteyam was holding tightly onto the saddle. When the beast took off, this time Neteyam held on tightly into the saddle, he was going to bond with the beast no matter what, even if he had to fall accouple more times, he will bond with it. After a little while from riding the Ni’awve he didn’t fall, this time the creature seemed more friendly towards him. He had bonded with the beast.
He let out a victory cry, also seeing that the group of girls looked stoned, they celebrated as well. Yolotli ran over to him with a smile on her face. “You did it! You bonded!” smiling at him. Neteyam had forgotten about his injury, after wards he then felt the pain come back. The adrenaline had worn off and he groaned in pain. Yolotli than helped him down from his now beast. “You okay?” she asked as he just nodded. “Yeah, it just hurts” he mumbled as Yolotli walked him over to y/n.
“Y/n/n? Can you take Neteyam to mama?” she asked as y/n who had not said a word nodded. “Yeah, lets go” they said, leading Neteyam away while Yolotli helped Ao’nung. As they walked side to side, y/n spoke. “I had to admit, that was impressive of you Netnet” they said smirking at the boy, they noticed how his cheeks turned purple. “Thank you” he said as they both arrived at a small hut
It was similar to a home like his temporary one, except there was a small cot, two little stoles, some herbs hanging on the wall, and on the middle was small fire bit, which was lit while a small caldron hanged above the fire. He saw a woman there, she was making something on the small table that was on the corner of the hut. “Mama? I need your help” y/n said as the woman turn to look at her.
The woman was just like everyone else, pale skin, and dotted patterns. Her eyes were a golden color, her hair was as long as her queue, she was wearing an bld dark blue huipil skirt with different patterns, that went from her waist to her calves, she had no top on, thankfully her hair was the thing that covered her chest. She had also had a symbol drawn on her chest and others symbols on her cheeks near her mouth. She had wooden earrings and a piercing at the bottom of her lip just like Yolotli. Neteyam did not miss her beauty, she seemed as if she was gift from Eywa.
“Oh, what happened?” the women asked, taking Neteyam by the arm gently, guiding him to sit on the stole. “He fell off the Ni’awve” y/n said chuckling, the woman examined him. There were some scrapes on his back and elbows, the woman then got some water from a bucket and began to clean his wounds with a cloth. She had a very gentle touch “y/n make some tea” the woman said as y/n nodded and got to making tea. They took some dried herbs from the wall and got to work, crushing the leaves and putting them in the caldron with water to boil.
After the woman was done cleaning his wounds, she got a little bowl with a strange colored paste and began to put some of the paste on him. Neteyam winced in pain, it burned. “I’m sorry that it hurts, but this should heal your wounds.” The woman said as she she continued. Y/n had approached with a cup, that had the steaming tea and handed it to the woman. “Here drink this, it may taste bad but it will help with the pain, it best to drink it hot” she said smiling. Neteyam nodded and drank the tea fast, it tasted horrible and it was hot.
“Oh, how rude of me, I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Patli, I am the mother of both y/n and Yolotli.” She said kindly at the boy. “Its a pleasure to meet you” he said smiling at her. Patli smiled and walked over to the table that had freshly cut herbs, taking some and tied them with a smile string. She walked over and handed them to him, along with a little wooden tin with that paste. “If the pain comes back, you can make a tea with these herbs or you can chew them. They should take the pain away.” She said kindly. “Thank you ma’am” Neteyam said respectfully to her.
“Okay, we’ll be on our way” y/n said as Patli pulled them into a side hug and kissed their forehead. “Stay out of trouble now” she said as but y/n let out a dramatic gasp “me? causing trouble? never” they said as Patli gave her a look of ‘I know how you are’. Both y/n and Neteyam walked out of the hut. “Patli is very nice” Neteyam said as y/n responded as they walked back to where the rest of the teens were. “I mean, where do you think Yolotli got her kindness?” they said. “So, it was her that birthed her?” he asked as y/n nodded. “Yup! and my other mother Nicte gave birth to me” they said. Now it made since, y/n shared a lot of Nicte’s traits and Yolotli shared a lot from Patli’s traits.
When they returned to the spot, Ao’nung was on the back of an Ni’awve, he seemed to had got the hang of beast, he probably already bonded with it. The group of girls then spotted Neteyam and ran towards his direction, all the girls had tried to get a hold of him. “That was so amazing!” one of them said, then another much taller girl chimed in “yeah, who would of thought a forest na’vi would bond with a Ni’awve” she said a bit too flirty. Other girls had chimed in talking over each other, completing Neteyam.
Y/n had been watching the whole time, and for some reason, they did not liked how her friends were putting hands on the boy na’vi. They glared at the group of girls trying to get Neteyam’s attention. “He is a ladies magnet alright” Ao’nung who was now standing next to you said. “Really?” y/n asked looking at him, the Metkayina boy nodded “Yup, back home he had a load of girls chasing after him.” He said as Y/n continued to watch. “Where is Yolotli?” they asked “oh, she went with my mother and Neytiri, she said she wanted to teach them how to cook stuff from here.” He said.
Then y/n got an idea “would you like to go hunting?” they asked as Ao’nung saw the smirk on their face, a toothy smirk he already knew to well. He couldn’t help but also notice some jade gems on their teeth. “Sure, why not” he said as Neteyam had managed to get away from the group of girls towards Ao’nung and y/n. “What are you two planning?” he asked as y/n responded. “We’re going hunting, I want to see how good you are” they said as they began to walk away. The boys followed y/n, they had gone towards her home which was the giant pyramid. They walked all the way to the top, y/n had no problem, but both Ao’nung and Neteyam got exhausted, as soon as they got to the top, they dropped to the floor trying to catch their breath. Y/n had gone in to get their weapon of choice.
Once they came out, they had three spears, a knife and a Macuahuitl. “Come on, lets go” they said walking down the steps. The boys looked at each other then groaned. They all walked down the steps, again both boys were exhausted. The trio reached the forest, then y/n began to give each boy a spear. They had tied their Macuahuitl onto their hip. “Okay, now that we are all set, lets go.” They said as they went into the woods.
They went deep into the woods, trying to find a prey. They continued to walk until y/n stopped. “Listen” they said, they all stayed quiet, listening to the forest at first but they began to hear heavy sounds, sounds of an animal. Y/n then began to climb on a tree, Neteyam followed while Ao’nung also followed but he had was having a difficult time climbing. Y/n crawled near a hug branch, staying quiet as possible, looking down, spotting a Tapirus, by it self, eating the grass peacefully.
y/n turned to see the boys behind them, they lifted their finger to their lip, signaling them to stay quiet. They then got their spear, aiming the weapon towards the animal. y/n waited for a bit before throwing the weapon, hitting the creature in the right spot, instantly killing it. “Yes!” y/n said in victory, both Neteyam and Ao’nung were surprised. “Damn” Neteyam said as Ao’nung had his jaw dropped. “I guess we’ll be having menudo or may be Chile Colorado” they said as they jumped down to retrieve the creature, the boys followed behind. “Chile what now?” Ao’nung said confused making y/n roll their eyes. “Chile Colorado, its a dish, very spicy, the spicier the better for me” they said.
Y/n pulled out the spear from the creature, getting some blood on them, some landed on their face. They touched the spot on their cheek which had blood, and they licked the blood of their fingers. Neteyam and Ao’nung looked at one another surprised by their action. “So, where else should we hunt for?” they asked as Neteyam then said “Fish? Do you guys eat fish?” he asked as y/n responded “we rarely eat fish, we like to eat meat, we could go for some fish” they said. Y/n had picked up the animal, carrying it on their back as if it were nothing to them.
“Would you like me to carry it for you?” Neteyam asked as y/n looked at him with an eye brow raised. “Are you sure?” they asked as Neteyam nodded. “Okay” they said removing the animal from their back and put it on Neteyam’s back. As soon as the beast was on his back, he nearly fell, the creature was heavier than him, he tried to stay up the creature’s heaviness was greater. “You need help there?” Ao’nung asked with a smirk. “N-no.. I’m doing just fine” he said as he nearly was about to fall. “Yeah, give it here” y/n said taking the creature off his back. “You okay?” they asked Neteyam who was catching his breath. “Never.. been better..” he said trying to catch his breath.
They continued their hunting. They had arrived at a river nearby, both boys had jumped into the water in search for fish. They had been in the river for a while, catching as many fish as they could. After a while they had got a lot of fish, enough for a lot of people eat. They began to head back to the village, back to the boy’s temporary home. Yolotli had been there helping both Ronal and Neytiri with the cooking. She had brought them a clay cooking pot along with other dishes. “We’re back” Neteyam said getting their attention. “Oh you brought Tapirus” Yolotli said as Y/n placed the creature down “yeah, we could teach them how to make Chile Colorado.” They suggested, as Yolotli responded. “That sounds good, I’ll have to go get some Red Chiles though” she said giving both Ronal and Neytiri a polite smile and living to get red chiles.
Y/n began to skin the animal while both Ao’nung and Neteyam watched, as they skinned the fish they brought. The boys had skinned animals before, but they this was different, they watched them with fascination, as if they wanted to watch them do this for a life time. They were both snapped out of their thought when Ronal had called them over to bring her the fish. Y/n had put the remainings of the animal in a basket so that they could feed it to the Ni’awve. Yolotli had returned with the chiles. That whole after noon they had been cooking. Since they were going to stay with them for a while, they might as well learn.
Yolotli had been teaching both adult women how to make the red Chile Sause, while y/n was showing the two boys how to cook the Tapirus meet for the stew. They also added other ingredients to the stew. They had also introduced them to red rice. After the food was ready, Neteyam and Ao’nung had invited both y/n and Yolotli to stay for dinner, as a way to thank them in helping them that they. They both stayed to eat dinner with the family.
Everyone was talking about their day and other stuff that will be happening towards the week. During the conversation, Ao’nung mouth had been on fire, due to the food being very spicy, he nearly drank all the water just to cool off his tongue. Y/n had been laughing since they weren’t used to eating spicy things. Both Y/n and Yolotli had been eating the spicy stew as if it were no problem. After dinner, y/n and Yolotli helped clean up and left back home due to getting dark.
That night both Neteyam and Ao’nung couldn’t really sleep, they had been thinking y/n and y/n only. They really couldn’t understand why they had been thinking of the Tsahìk ‘s child. They weren’t sure why, but they both knew that sooner or later something more might happen.

AVATAR : WAY OF WATER with a Human ! S/O who has psoriasis
Characters included : Neteyam, Lo'ak, Kiri, Ao'nung, Tsireya
Pronouns used : They / Them
Note(s) : Psoriasis is a non contagious skin condition caused by stress, hormonal changes and immune disorders. It can also be caused by genetics as it runs in family. You get flaky patches on the skin that are painful and dry.
Neteyam
He's worried for your health, it was bad enough you were human but now he refuses to take you anywhere remotely dangerous. He worries if they look too red or flaky, bringing you to Mo'at with no questions or confirmation on if its actually sore or not. Sometimes it can get annoying, and to be honest it's not the best way to react, but Neteyam's doing it because he knows how stubborn people can be and doesn't want you dimishing your pain, regardless on if you've ever done it or not.
Has a schedule for you and your ointments, he won't let you skip one or two even if they're looking really good one day, Netyam is very strict when it comes to your health. If they get bad again because you've been a bit careless while he's been away you're in for a lecture.
If the areas where it's bad ever split he's literally doing everything for you no exceptions, and while he doesn't want to come off as overbearing, Neteyam knows how incredibly dangerous infections are, he can't risk further injuries coming from the scabs.
Whenever it's all flaky and crusty he admits he cringes a bit, but still doesn't mind bringing you to a lake or getting something to wipe the excess off. He's very gentle and slow, trying his best to prevent making it worse.
When you get to the Metkayina any bullying or harrasment is met with aggression, he won't go out of his way to fight, and even tries to deescalate the situation if it goes too far, but he will defend you.
He has a bit more trouble bringing you to Ronal, and ends up very stiff and awkward during the interactions of your health, less so if you talk to her directly. Because of this, Neteyam usually gets Kiri to help him gather herbs he can use to help you, and because some Na'vi are judgemental of humans and it'd be easier to avoid stares or confrontation going to Ronal.
If you itch, bite, pick, whichever, he tries to help by placing something with a layer of cream or some kind of ointment over the parts that you tend to aggravate, it's his way of being not only affectionate, but helpful in preventing an infection. Neteyam isn't judgemental as I imagine most of his younger siblings done it from time to time, he probably done it as well at some point.
Given that when it splits water and just touching in general is incredibly painful, he tends to convince you with how bad it could get in the future, reminding you what could happen if you don't try to prevent it. When rubbing them onto your skin he reminds you that you can ask him to stop at any time if he notices you flinching or closing your eyes in pain.
Lo'ak
He's mainly concerned, not overbearing, it's mainly small anxieties and asking questions that can be a little too invasive. They can get annoying sometimes even if he means well.
Wonders if because his family share DNA with humans that he could catch it, until you shut him down with the 'It isn't contagious.' which then gets him embarrassed on the fact he assumed in the first place. Ask him about it a while after, his face and even up to his ears and shoulders will go purple with a blush.
If you get made fun of, either by Na'vi or other humans, he'll defend you, as sad as the attempt is to watch, and relate to your experiences as he feels he can never truly fit with either. Even if the experiences you two have are wildly different in the simplest of terms.
Picking it usually ends in him being a little disgusted at the puss and blood that comes from it, but he wipes it away and washes the bacteria nonetheless, offering you comfort for the painful splitting. He can come off like he's disgusted at you, which he genuinely isn't, it's moreso the fact its gotten so bad and you could have an infection that ends in excruciating pain. He doesn't want you to go through that.
Lo'ak tries preventing picking and biting by telling you stories of how he nearly had to remove an arm one time because he scratched at an injury, this usually leads to you feeling anxiety or annoyed, maybe you're comforted by this and try to stop, either way he's trying to warn you of the dangers it can cause.
He takes a longer time than the rest to bring you to healers, unless you don't need convincing and go yourself, this isn't for a lack of caring, he just feels like making you go too often could make you feel babied.
Tends to ignore advice by healers, nothing major, but he brings you on exploration and hunts even after Mo'at or Ronal directly tell him not to.
He brings you to Mo'at very awkwardly, she tends to assume it's him in need of help for doing something dangerous, but whenever it's you she's sighing and asking why you didn't come sooner. Scolding him as he looks down and huffs.
Lo'ak makes sure to tell you he sees you for you, and he doesn't care that you have Psoriasis, it's apart of you, both figuratively and literally. He couldn't imagine you without it and doesn't make you feel bad for having it.
Kiri
Kiri feels really bad for you if you get bullied for it, she tries to relate to you given she gets made fun of for her being a 'freak', although her attempts come off slightly pushy, it comes from a place of love and wanting to understand you.
Her strong connection with Eywa allows her to help you, she's able to find the materials needed in order to soothe your pain without fully understanding where everything is.
She's been training to be a healer for as long as she could think, and is more capable than most in this list beside Tsireya, so she knows what to do on the physical spectrum of helping you. Emotionally, she's also really good! When you're feeling really down Kiri asks you questions, and if you prefer to listen, she's also amazing at speaking about things she's interested in.
When you pick and bite she tries telling you it won't help at all, explaining the dangers in detail, this can either distract you from it or convince you to try and be more aware of your actions, although you obviously won't always be able to stop if you don't realise. But if you react negatively for whatever reason she tries to be near you more often, gently removing your hands from the parts that you're going to pick or bite almost on instinct.
She will bring you to Mo'at or Ronal when she doesn't know how to help, listening intently so she doesn't have to. It's not that she hates the outside or anything, but in the Metkayinas she prefers to stay away from others from fear of bullying, both for you and her.
Ao'nung
Ao'nung made fun of you because of your 'strange skin', along with the Sully's for being 'demons'. After the whole Lo'ak incident he stops being extreme about his remarks but will still tease and mention it sometimes. However, if you genuinely have a problem with it and ask one of the Sully's, given the only way you'd be allowed with the Metkyina's is with the Sully's, to have him stop then he probably will.
I imagine he'd probably believe humans just looked like that, I don't think he's ever actually been 1 on 1 with a human before or up close. That's probably until he meets Spider, and you have to explain what Psoriasis is.
If it gets really painful he has no idea what to do, he then proceeds to be the embodiment of crying for his mother when he has an issue. He sounds fairly unbothered and even annoyed at you, but Ronal knows how he is, and she is side eyeing you both.
Will stand there and constantly ask questions while Ronal checks you over, she kicks him out after a while and remarks how childish he's being.
Given they usually only get painful if dry, though sometimes they're just annoying, Ronal suggested swimming more often, and so you joined in on the lessons the Sully's got. The lessons would most likely be longer with you because you tend to slow them down, at least you don't need to worry about breathing with the oxygen mask.
He'll try bringing you hunting every once and a while, mainly to help exercise you and help you be more useful so you can be more healthy. If you struggle and can't exercise more often, Ao'nung doesn't know what to do that could assist you beside help with ointments.
If you pick and scratch he gets kinda angry, it doesn't mean he'll yell or harm you, he just doesn't want you to be in pain. Ao'nung will hold your hands or cover the parts you can reach when he's around, but when he's gone it's easy to fall back into that habit. After a while of scolding you and telling you to stop doesn't work, he begs Tsireya for help.
Tsireya
She constantly asks her mother for help whenever it gets too painful or dry, Ronal tells her she can't help besides ointments on the skin regularly and Tsireya is dissapointed every time, wanting to help ease your pain.
Even though Ronal disapproves of you, being fearful of a betrayal given human nature, she will still be willing to help for her daughters sake and to remain in good spirits with the Sully family.
Tsireya tries ways to improve your mental health once you explain that things like stress can cause it, she takes you swimming in shallow water to try relax you and clean out any dirt that could be in the patches. She's gentle when guiding you and never presses hard against areas where it appears for you, sometimes she forgets how tall she is though and leads you too deep.
She's never judged or been rude to you, and when her brother or other people are she isn't kind with them. Heck, when she had first met you she had simply believed all humans had it.
Tsireya was really accepting when you told her what it was, she even held your hand and gently brushed a hand over some sore parts to prove she wasn't disgusted. Sometimes kissing them when it wasn't all crusty and all split.
Whenever or if ever you feel insecure, Tsireya to the rescue! She will separate the lessons with the Sully's and with you if you feel ashamed, only when you feel better about yourself will she bring you back. Building confidence is key and forcing you to the deep end, literally, will only shatter your self image.
Constantly reminds you to put the ointments over your skin and frets over you, loving to show you how much she adores you and doesn't mind your skin condition at all. Applying them herself if you forget.
She is still Ronal's daughter, and will be strict when it comes to medical issues, especially when they split given how painful it is and how it can become infected easier.
Again on the splitting or if you pick, she's hesitant to bring you back into the water, it hurts when wounds go into water and she's nervous you'll be in more pain. However, she does understand it can clean wounds and it's either this or wait until its healed to swim. Which she's fine if you prefer the second one.
If you pick and scratch she's probably the best one to have, she asks Ronal to bring her bandages so she can wrap them up after washing the dirt out and put ointments on, she helps change them and makes sure the bandages are thick so you can't scratch through them. Tsireya won't repremand you too much or get angry, she understands it can't be helped sometimes and besides some light scolds she treats you gently.

Hii, saw your request were open!

Thanks alot and stay healthy!!
--- sex ed. class ☆゚.*・。゚
platonic!various x gn!human!reader
!! in my hc, fem na'vi doesn't menstruate !!
teaching your na’vi friends, who doesn’t menstruate, the beautiful world of human biology
part 1! part 2
"so, your... thing bleeds every month?"
you nod
"are you stupid?
"i'm sorry?"
ao'nung clicks his tongue, looking at you with disbelieve. "that means you're doing something, only Eywa knows what, to yourself. and you’re doing it so badly that it bleeds-"
you hit him on the head, "no! what are you even thinking?"
"no, but seriously" neteyam looks at you with concern, "forgive me for watching you, but this morning i saw you wash your blanket that’s literally soaked with blood"
your face starts to heat up, "that means the cloth i use wasn't enough-"
"3 pieces of cloth to soak your blood. and it wasn't even enough?" tsireya's voice filled with worry, "are you sure you're okay? we could ask my mother to patch you up"
"reya, im fine-"
"no you're not! you came to her for painkillers this morning, to mend your stomach cramps!"
"its probably tape worms"
"no shit", rotxo snickers
"or just a real bad constipation"
"rotxo, ao’nung please” kiri rolls her eyes, tired of their stupidity. “they clearly said that the bleeding comes from their other below"
not long after lo'ak snaps his head towards you, mouth agape. "holy shit. i think i know what's going on", then quickly moves closer to you. his face just a few inches from yours, his terrified look terrifies you
"my mother experienced the same things as you, when we were about to have tuk. stomach hurting, below bleeding- "
"no. fucking. way” rotxo clasps his mouth, “are you about to give birth?"
"what?"
ao’nung’s jaw dropped. “who knocked you up?”
“that’s it i’m taking you to the tsahik”
“STOP”
your friends went quiet.
they could only stare at your flushed face as your breathing went erratic.
you gulp, trying to calm yourself down. you close your eyes, inhaling a good amount of oxygent to fill your lungs and letting your mind go blank. then, you could open your mouth again
"as you all know, female bodies bear children in their uterus, yes?"
they all nod
"good. now the uterus, in human bodies specifically, would prepare for pregnancy every month-"
"so you need to get pregnant every month?"
"shut up rotxo"
"wait a minute" kiri cuts you off, "you’re not pregnant, but you’re currently bleeding. so the bleeding occurs when the pregnancy doesn’t happen?"
"yup. because i'm not pregnant, my womb's lining shreds out"
their terrified screams deafens you

this is probably a lame idea, but can you write a one shot that takes place sometime after twow. where tulkun are returning again and ao'nung tells his spirit brother that he became mated with sully!reader? maybe reader is clueless what they're talking about idk. i just want some established relationship fluff with him and there are not a lot of writing like that 😣
DEFINITELY NOT A LAME IDEA!! BUT IM SO SORRY I THINK ITS TOO SHORT!
ao'nung x gn! reader
It was an ordinary day. The Sully family welcoming the day by spending the time together in their marui. Laughing and catching up with each member of the family. Their laughter was cut off when the horn sounded again, and they heard it.
“Everyone, the Tulkuns have returned!”
Your ears perked up at the sound of Tsireya’s joyous voice. It had been something you hadn’t heard in a long time. All of your siblings looked at each other, excitement filling your eyes as you all scrambled to stand up and race outside your marui.
Neteyam laughs in victory being the first one to step foot outside. “No fair, bro!” Lo’ak playfully shoves Neteyam as Spider came second with you. Then Kiri and Tuk.
“Let’s go!” Tuktirey shouts, running and calling for her ilu.
Everyone followed her, but Lo’ak went out of his way to go over to Tsireya. While an all too familiar figure walks towards you, his signature smile plastered onto his face.
You already feel your body reacting on its own as you smiled back, cheeks warming. “Hey there.” Ao’nung greeted, taking a glance out in the sea to find everyone finding their own spirit sibling.
“Care to join me?” Ao’nung offers his hand.
Who were you to refuse your mate?
“Gladly.” You reply, taking his hand. Ao’nung called to his ilu and you already made your way behind his back, your arms wrapping around his waist as he looks hack at you.
“Ready?”
Once you have him a nod his ilu was off, diving into the ocean. Ao’nung’s eyes scanned the water for his own spirit brother.
It also registered to you that this’ll be the first time you’d see his spirit brother, and you suddenly got nervous. But you really did not have the time to learn what they were saying, so it made you all the more nervous.
Once Ao’nung finds his spirit brother, his smile grows approaching the Tulkun.
His ilu slows.
Your eyes then travelled to the creature in front of you. It was huge and it had the same tattoos on its belly like on Ao’nung’s arm. Your eyes widened. Then the two of you dismount his ilu.
You watched as Ao’nung approached his tulkun, signing his greetings which you knew.
`I see you, brother’ Ao’nung signs towards his spirit brother, who in turn sounded his reply.
Your smile only grew seeing Ao’nung catch up with his tulkun. But to be honest, you really didn’t know what he was saying, nor what his spirit brother was saying.
On Ao’nung’s point of view, however.
Ao’nung takes a glance at you before signaling for you to come closer.
You shy, but follow him as you swam beside him, facing his tulkun.
‘This is (Y/N)’ He signs to his spirit brother.
You could hear him squawk in a high pitch tone.
‘And they’re my mate’ Ao’nung signs rather proudly.
You were still confused as Ao’nung’s smile grew as his brother responded.
‘That is amazing news, I feel the two of you are made for each other’
Ao’nung nods before replying ‘I don’t know what I’d do without them, I’m really thankful for it’
Then his spirit brother turns to look at you and you swore by the way its head tipped down and its eyes bore into yours that it had accepted you. You smile, signing your greeting.
After they had caught up, Ao’nung invited you to ride with his spirit brother.
‘Hold here’ He signs, patting its fin. You follow, placing your hands on its fin. Ao’nung did the same beside you as he signals his tulkun brother to go.
Then you both were being swam around, doing a couple of loops.
Ao’nung occasionally glances at you, his heart being overwhelemd as you had a huge grin on your face as you signed ‘Thank you’ to his tulkun.
And after that, the two of you found yourselves atop his tulkun, sitting across from each other.
“Ao’nung, I cannot describe how this makes me happy.” You say, referring to him and his tulkun’s connection.
“He knows who you are already.” He replies, taking your hand in his and stroking the back of it.
“He likes you.” Ao’nung said after you didn’t respond. “Really?”
“Yes, really, you know what else he said?” Ao’nung smirks at you, now pulling you close to trap you in a hug.
“What?”
“That we’re made for each other.”

ao’nung the type of guy to have u sneak out of ur marui pod in an UNGODLY hour of the night just to take on a swim date to not have anyone around mhm and i have a lot to say abt this.......
⇢ WHISPERS & WAVES
ao’nung x gn!reader
includes: flirty ao’nung. sneaking out. fluff & shit.
notes: god he’s so aggravating i’d risk a scolding for him i really would. not proofread at all if u see mistakes then squint
you try to ignore it the first time. pretend you didn’t really hear it and simply doze back off.
"psst."
refusing to move from the comfort of your cot, you keep your eyes screwed shut and your body stiff so as to still appear asleep. after all, it is bad enough you have been stirred from your slumber, you aren't positive your family will take too lightly to being stirred from theirs.
"pssst!"
it's louder, this time, but yet you do not so much as twitch your toes. hopefully even if your family hears they will merely think it to be the wind brushing something against your shared marui pod. and, surely, your perpetrator would not keep this up if you did not give in to his pestering.
but you are very foolish to think that. and very, very wrong.
because he does not hiss out an alarm the third time, no. instead, a hand is wrapping around your ankle and tugging you across the woven floor, mat and all. your eyes dart open instantly, your body shooting up and hand flying to stop your late night intruder from his tugging on you. the scraping sound of his dragging halts immediately, and you flash a quick glance around your marui to clock the sleeping states of your family. thankfully, they still all seem settled into deep rest. a miracle, honestly.
"are you crazy?" you hiss, low and airy so as not to be heard.
"i knew you were awake," ao'nung simpers back, lets go of your ankle only to circle his grip around your wrist. "come on."
"it is the middle of the night, ao'nung." you do not hesitate to berate him, but you make no move to free yourself from his grip either. you wonder why you even play through this argumentative repetition anymore. maybe, it's to convince yourself that you do not hold these late night rendezvous at the same level he does.
(an incredibly false sentiment, regardless of how much mindless convincing you attempt to do).
"that's the point," he grins; wide and boyish and hopelessly endearing, as much as you hate to admit it.
but you must admit it—because it would be pointless not to—and you fault that disposition alone for not resisting one bit when ao'nung begins to pull you along by the wrist. all you're given is a split, shuffling second to glance back at your family before you're being whisked away down the netted pathways.
loosening up is easier with each footfall, and soon you don't even need ao'nung's persuasive vice to guide you along with him. you follow willingly, enticingly. your soles hit sand just as muted giggles begin to leave your mouth. ao'nung tugs at your tail, pinches at your waist as the two of you run across shore. breathy chuckles and dropped guards; you watch your volumes but not your hands.
night brings freedom—from analytical gazes, responsibilities, pressure. ao'nung likes the night, you have learned; thrives in it. perhaps another reason you find it so easy to give into him.
he sends a daring look over his shoulder as he begins to wade into the water. a taunt, a question. are you going to join me? you will join me, won't you? you will swim the seas with me until the sun burns out and night reigns forever and we are all that is left and—you will join me?
you will—you do. as soon as ao'nung turns back around to dive into the water you are rushing immediately after him. it's cold, chilling, against your skin as you break through it. but that does not mean it is unwelcome.
below the tide ao'nung greets you. he is still smiling, still keen, but it is softer. bubbles trickle from his lips to the surface like glitter chasing the heavens. he glistens and gleams and he is beautiful, here. you would not dare ever utter such a thing to his face for fear of it being held above your head for the rest of your adjoined lives. but it is truth and you stand by it, tuck it away into the crevices of your heart. within a file tagged: ma ao'nung alone, for only my eyes.
because this here, right now, is only for you, is it not?
ao'nung swims a circle around you, causes the ocean to spin you at its whim and you do not protest. you give way to see him like this; playful in the most innocent, pure sense. no animosity, so spite. you wonder if he even realizes how much of himself he gives away at times like these. if he's even aware he's baring bits and pieces of his soul to you.
you do not wish to complain and you will take all that you're given with outstretched hands and an ever-open heart. ao'nung is like the ocean: ruthless and unruly but strong and blanketing of all those held within him.
you have always been fond of the ocean.
his circling stops and he tips his head back up to the surface. more air, a need to breathe, he conveys. you've been so caught up in it all you hadn't even realized your chest had started to burn. funny, how such vital things can be pushed to the side.
you follow him, breach the sea and inhale until your lungs are satisfied. as you blink the water out of your eyes, you catch ao'nung's gaze. one beat, two beats—by the third you're laughing. at what, for why, you have no clue. but you aren't entirely sure there needs to be a comprehensible reason behind it.
it is warm and it is light, and that is enough.
"how about we play a game," ao'nung proposes. "whoever gets a shell from the ocean floor and makes it back to surface first wins."
"oh, you're so on," you snort, let a playful smirk tilt the edges of your lips. "do not cry too hard when i beat you."
"as if you could beat me," he snarks back, mirroring your grin, as he lines himself up with you. "go in three."
you narrow your eyes at him, splash a smidgen of water at his face just to vaguely throw him off his game. he splashes back, you do not fight it. you seem so drained of fight tonight.
"two."
ao’nung’s feet knock against yours underwater. an accident while keeping himself afloat, you know, but you still nudge him back with your own. his grin widens, you tip your head in a taunting manner.
"one."
now, in any other circumstance, one might expect ao'nung to be the cheating type. and, to be completely forthcoming, they'd be right. ao'nung is not a textbook cheater, you would say, but he knows his way about bending rules without causing the brittle decrees to break in order to turn the table in his favor. he likes to win, and he likes doing so by any means necessary.
but, that does not ring true in the case of you. ao'nung becomes a fair man within your presence. you like to joke that it's because he's scared of you, too afraid of what you might do in retaliation to his swaying. but you know that that is not the reason behind it at all. rather, he holds enough respect for you within his heart, that he would not try to pull your plug early. and you can't help but admire that.
especially now, as he even waits half a second after you take your dive to take his.
you know it will not make much difference and—despite your own competitive hunger to win—you know ao'nung could give you a five second head start and still best you easily. he is one of (if not the) strongest swimmers in your entire clan. you never had a fighting chance of winning, but you put on an act like you're trying to anyways, just to appease him.
you retrieve the first shell your hand grazes as you reach the bottom and instantly push off the sandy floor to race back to the top. and, just like you predicted, ao’nung is already a whole body’s length closer to air than you. his smile has turned triumphant, proud. you hate that you think it suits him.
you meet him above the waves only a few moments after he rises through them himself. he’s already opening his mouth for a tease before you even have the chance to move the sopping hair out of your eyes.
“what did you say, about beating me?” he goads, waving the shell he’s picked in front of your face. “i should have put some odds on the deal. what an easy win.”
of course it was, you want to say, but, “oh, shut it,” is what leaves your mouth.
you roll your eyes as you reach over to shove at his head. and he wastes no time in grabbing your arm, tugging you closer in the chilly water so that his chest brushes yours with every other flutter of your feet to keep you from sinking. his smirk is still there, still cocky and prideful and haughty, but his eyes twinkle with something more genuine in nature.
“why do you bring me out here, ao’nung?”
perhaps it is not something you should be so easily inclined to ask. not now, not when you are having such a good time with him. not while he’s got you so close. and yet, maybe that makes it the perfect time to ask such a thing. maybe, the heart finds it harder to lie when its pair is only separated by two inches of water and slanted ribs.
ao’nung’s snide expression falters; fizzles out like a star who’s died years ago and now it’s light has finally decided to dim. but it is not regretful, not bad.
it is more so contemplating, thinking of how to define its own existence.
“it is just… nice.” he juts out his bottom lip, drops his gaze from yours then back up. it’s so real, raw. he’s beautiful. “when everyone else is around, i get annoyed. they are all so nosy. and they—agh.”
he tries to throw his head to the side in a groan but you stop him. your hand molds to his cheek, brings him back to you. it’s almost comical, the pout on his lips.
“they what?” you ask, because you’d like to know. whatever it is.
and ao’nung takes a moment to chew it over. like he’s really having to think about if he really wants to tell you or not. (you think if he settles on not, you’ll just have to twist his ear until he agrees, but you don’t voice that just yet).
finally, he puffs out a breath. “everyone is just always looking. at you. at us. what we’re doing. and that’s just so…!”
“wait, you,” your eyes widen, the corners of your lips twitch up, “you’re shy!”
“i am not—“
“oh my eywa,” you laugh, wholly and totally uncaring of the volume of such now, “this is why you like to meet at night? when no one is around? that’s so—you’re so cute, ao’nung!”
“oh, i’ll show you cute,” he grumbles.
and suddenly you’re gasping as you’re being thrown back. a split second into the air before you’re splashing into the water. you’re all sorts of twisted around, but with a few passes of erratic thrashing, you make your way back up to the surface. you’re sucking in a breath as you hear ao’nung’s busting of a gut. you’re glad he finds nearly drowning you funny.
“oh now that,” he chuckles, reaches forward to sweep the mess of hair out of your eyes so that you can get the chance to glare at him properly. “that’s cute.”
“how do you somehow always end up spinning these things onto me?” you question, allowing him to pull you close once again, despite the chattering of your teeth.
“you just make it too easy,” he levels, pinching at your waist and laughing once more at how you jerk from it. and yet, you let him place your arms around his neck, don’t object to how he settles his own hands onto your hips submerged in the sea. how uncouth of you, your father might just be ashamed. but as ao’nung’s gaze softens, you can’t find it within yourself to care about his approval right now. “you make everything too easy.”
“why, prince ao’nung, are you flirting with me?” you ask through a faux gasp. and now it’s his turn to roll his eyes at you. but it is done lovingly, with a squeeze to your hips and another inch closer.
“i’m about to do a whole lot more than flirt,” he murmurs, darting his eyes to your lips, closing the gap that suddenly seems eons too far. light reflects off the droplets clinging to his lashes like a linear constellation, and you wonder if they’ll transfer across your cheeks as you let your eyes flutter shut with the first brush of his salty lips against your own.
moonlight tends to paint the prettiest pictures when it is veiling over tides and two young lovers, you think. beauty is forged among the whispers and waves.

FIRST TIME ;; AO'NUNG
summary ;; it's not like a laugh can ruin the mood… right?
pairing ;; ao'nung x gn!metkayina!reader
warnings ;; none ¡!
word count ;; 0.5k
The water reached your feet, the sun was slowly hiding, the presence of the boy you had already been courting by your side. Everything indicated it. It was now or never. The first kiss of both. The one that would lead to your future relationship.
You could feel your heart pumping hard and from your nerves you just wanted to laugh. Your eyes seemed to smile in the company of your lips, whom you tried to calm down. You had to turn away even for Ao'nung not to notice your nervousness, although you felt the boy's hand resting on yours, you tried not to look immediately.
"Don't laugh, don't laugh, don't laugh" you repeated to yourself as if it was a prayer. It was the best moment and you couldn't ruin it. You shouldn't, really. You tensed your jaw, hoping you wouldn't burst into nervous laughter.
On the other hand, the boy was nervous, a little fearful even. Yes, he knew how to kiss, but he couldn't admit that he'd done it alone with his hand when he was twelve, or that he'd tried it with Rotxo when he was eight. Actually, he hoped you wouldn't notice. Although a part deep down in his heart was insecure that you would reject everything you both had already been through just because he kissed you wrong.
He grimaced and took your hand, but noticing that you looked away, he whistled, pretending to think of something else and wiggled one of his fingers, trying to get your attention.
You turned, having calmed your restless heart, but there you saw him. Ao'nung had turned as well, slowly closing his eyes and stretching his lips to kiss you.
To your mind came the image of one of the fish you caught in the morning and though you tried to hold back, tears escaped your eyes and you began to laugh, covering your face.
"Sorry, sorry, sorry, really sorry, it's just that- I'm really nervous, really, I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you, I swear" you tried to explain as you spoke hurriedly, still guffawing with purple cheeks. You noticed the boy grimaced in embarrassment and tried to pull away, but you grabbed his hand and denied.
"I'm sorry, I was-I am, very nervous actually. Sorry, I swear I wanted to kiss you, it's just- I've never kissed before" you admitted, though you were more embarrassed that you laughed in his face than that you hadn't kissed someone before you met him.
"You're insufferable" muttered the boy, sitting back down on the sand next to you. His ears were pinned back and you could tell he was embarrassed. "And now?" he asked after a few seconds of silence.
"I'll close my eyes and-and you do that."
"And why me? You were the one who laughed" you grimaced in annoyance and rolled your eyes.
"You want me to laugh again?" it was a question, but it sounded like a threat, so Ao'nung licked his lips nervously and moved closer to you, crashing your lips together before you could react.
After a few seconds he broke away and looked at you again.
"Can I do it again?"
"Please" you smiled.
a/n ;; it's more of a fun fact, but my first kiss was with a friend in the girls' bathroom when we were four/five y.o,,,,,,

ᴘᴀɪʀɪɴɢ: sully kids x hard of hearing metkayina male reader (platonic)
ꜱᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: In a search for a way to communicate with you, the family has to master Na'vi sign language. Along the way of teaching them, however, you learn more about yourself.
ᴀɴᴏɴ: can you do a male Metkayina clan reader BUT the reader is hard of hearing because of the water from swimming.
ʀᴇ𝐐: yes ~ ᴡᴏʀᴅ ᴄᴏᴜɴᴛ: 6148 ~ extra ~ gn reader vers.
ᴡᴀʀɴɪɴɢꜱ: feelings of shame and embarrassment, struggling to hear and understand people (and yourself), hints of angst
ᴍᴀʏʙ'ꜱ ɴᴏᴛᴇ: we don't have resources for their exact sign language so i made some things up (since na'vi sign language isn't the same as asl) as well as iknimaya trials and traditions.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Ever since you were a kid, you had always loved the ocean. The Metkayina clan was a tribe of the water, the ocean, so it made sense; but unlike others your age who preferred to play with each other, you enjoyed being completely surrounded by Eywa's children within the ocean.
You had no qualms with solitude, as all you needed was the sea; but eventually, it proved to be a problem.
The sea gives and the sea takes; it gave you a world to love and took your hearing.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Tsireya introduced you to Sully's in their first lesson as one of the Metkayina who truly loved the ocean. "This is our best free diver," She put a hand on your shoulder, "(y/n). You're lucky I managed to find him."
Instead of responding in some negative way at her comment, you grin and offer a small wave.
"How so?" Lo'ak questions.
Tsireya doesn't answer outright. She giggles, "You'll see."
The chief's children and you jump into the water, demonstrating the proper way to dive in that best transitions into swimming. The Sully's, on the other hand, jump into the water as though in play.
You could see it in their eyes, their amazement. The sea was an entirely different world from the one above, it was something you loved about it.
Only the Na'vi and their animal companions mingled on the coast above. The ilu could be compared to their banshees, nothing special; and the people, though physically different, were still Na'vi.
You didn't doubt that these water creatures were unlike anything they'd seen before, and you were happy that they were astonished with the wildlife you, too, loved.
You turn back forward to swim, knowing that they'll follow. You show them the form, using your tail to help and keeping your body like a spear to be able to cut through the water.
You lead them deeper into the sea, but Ao'nung taps your shoulder. You turn to follow his finger, which points up.
The Sully's were taking a breath of air. Right, that's probably something you should teach them, but you were probably not the best teacher.
Within the water, your safe haven, you tended to forget many things, so you signed to them, keep going, forgetting they didn't know how to sign.
You keep swimming, this time checking up on them as you reach an underwater slope. They were bad swimmers, it seemed, which is an idea sort of incomprehensible to you, as every Metkayina was basically born in the ocean. They pushed off of coral and rock formations to push forward and keep up.
They don't even make it to you when they go back up for air.
What's wrong with them? Ao'nung signs.
They're bad divers. Rotxo replies. Though fingers and hands hardly conveyed emotion, you knew from Rotxo and Ao'nung's generally jokester demeanor that he was making fun of them.
Stop, they're learning. Tsireya scolds.
Whilst they talk to one another, you get distracted with something out of the corner of your eye. It was bioluminescence, hardly noticeable during the daytime, which is why it's so curious. You forget the lesson at hand and follow it.
The chief's children and Rotxo swim up to talk to the Sully's where they will actually understand each other. It is only after Tsireya promises to teach them sign language, which Neteyam ignorantly describes as "finger talk", that they notice you and their dear sister's disappearance.
The bioluminescence you had caught came from a lone hammerhead squid, which is even more peculiar because it was alone. Perhaps it was paranoid, because when it saw you, it began swimming away with determination.
You struggle to catch up with it.
It dives behind large coral, hoping to lose you, but you always catch up. Hammerhead squids found safety in numbers, so they usually didn't go so fast, which means it would tire out soon.
Knowing this, you kept up the chase. Regardless, however, it puts up a good fight.
It shoots out its ink prematurely. The black liquid disperses in the water, clouding much of the view ahead of you. Instead of swimming through it, you dive under, although you almost bump into a sharp rock. Narrowly, you avoid it, swimming up quickly once you're past the ink.
Though you move past it, its original outcome–clouding your view–succeeds. When you clear the ink, you suddenly bump into someone.
Sorry. You sign, rubbing at your forehead where you'd bumped into her, so so sorry.
The girl before you is one of the Sully's. Her eyebrows furrow, confusion in her face, but you misinterpret it as anger. Great, it's the Sully's first day in the clan and you were already giving bad impressions.
I didn't mean to bump into you.
Her eyebrows furrow further. Ultimately, although she doesn't like it, she decides to surface so that the two of you may speak. She points up and you understand.
Once you're up at the surface, she says, "I don't know what you're saying."
You had long since memorized the way one's mouth moves when they say those words, and their variations, so you explain, "I was apologizing for bumping into you."
Though the next couple words come muddled to you, you just barely catch her saying "alright" and a wave of relief washes over you. "What's your name?"
"Kiri." She gives you a polite smile.
"Nice to meet you, Kiri." You nod. "I didn't realize we'd lost you while diving. Why'd you wander off?"
"Oh, I um," She worries that you may think her a freak, so she waters it down. "I got distracted."
You chuckle, "Yeah, I get it. Happens a lot to me too. It's like a different world, isn't it?"
Her face lights up when you agree with her, "Yeah, it is." She ached to observe it again, to be surrounded by Eywa'eveng. "Do you mind if I..?" She gestures down.
You tilt your head, confused. "You what?"
"Go down again." Kiri mutters, little ashamed to say out loud that she'd rather be underwater than talk with you, but you manage to read her lips.
"Oh, of course I don't." You shake your head, "Actually, I was in the middle of finding something. Do you wanna come with?"
Though she much preferred to take the sights all in on her own and on her own time, she had to admit your offer was interesting. "Okay, sure." She nods.
Kiri follows you back underwater, and keeps swimming after you. Reminded of the other Sully's, you make sure to keep your head straight and swim at a slower pace.
As you keep swimming past large coral and columns of algae, trying to catch a glimpse of the squid you were searching for before, Kiri gets distracted by something particularly special out of the corner of her eye.
She stays in place, entranced, and almost swims for it before remembering the task at hand. However, when she turns to you, you're swimming back to her.
Txampaysye. You sign, but of course she wouldn't understand. So, you wave your hand in the water to create ripples in the current and signify the water. Then, you pass a hand from your stomach to your throat and out your mouth to signify breathing. Breathing underwater.
Somehow, she understands. Though the butterfly-like Txampaysye catches her attention, uncharacteristically of her, she gestures for you to keep going. She'll have time another day.
Just a bit of swimming later, you find the squid again. It doesn't notice you. You point at it and Kiri's head tilts with curiosity.
How could a squid be bioluminescent in the day? The sunlight's rays still reached it.
Do you want to catch it? You closed your hand, from splayed fingers into a fist very quickly, the sign for catch. It was pretty straight forward, so Kiri understood; what she didn't understand, and what she was against, was the idea.
The question was only formal. You swim forward without waiting for her answer, thinking she wanted to catch it.
You approach it as silently as possible, keeping your arms to your body and swaying up and down, using your feet like a fin. You keep your tail rigid and in place, for paddling it side to side as opposed to up and down like your legs would create unnecessary noise.
Once you are close enough, you lunge with a quick, sharp movement. It doesn't have time to react before you catch it between your fingers and palm.
Triumphantly, you turn to Kiri with your hand raised, failing to notice her growing anger. You swim towards her with enthusiasm.
Fyìp ioang. You sign.
For a moment you think you may be misinterpreting confusion as anger again, but you quickly realize you're interpreting correctly. Kiri pries your fingers apart, freeing the creature who spurts the last of its ink (only a little) and leaves.
Her eyebrows are furrowed, a look you hate, and she points up towards the surface again. You follow, embarrasment beginning to spread through your body.
"You shouldn't be taking animals against their will." She scolds, pointing an accusatory finger at you. Her anger was loud and clear in her voice, loud enough for you to hear.
"Sorry." You purse your lips and mumble so low you can't even hear it yourself, "I was only curious."
She huffs, "Your curiosity doesn't mean you can imprison them just to poke and prod."
"Yeah," You point your gaze down, "you're right."
"Just don't do it again." With that, she begins to swim away, not caring if you follow her.
With shame, you dive back into the water, in search of one of your favorite places to soothe yourself.
She was right, of course, but your curiosity was often one of your driving points. It was why you spent most of your time in the ocean, what kept you entertained underwater. On the other hand, it was also why you'd lost so much of your hearing.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
The next morning, on their way to their second lesson, the Sully's find you.
Lo'ak, after yesterday, now understands why Tsireya was lucky to find you before. He thinks they're pretty lucky today, too, as it seems you're going to head into the ocean. "(y/n)!" He calls for your attention, but you don't hear him.
You're just about to dive in, so Lo'ak hurries up to meet you. He catches you by the shoulder. "Hey."
"Hey." You greet him with a smile. "What's up?"
"You left us yesterday. Where'd you go?" He asks curiously.
"I'm sorry, what?" You ask, having not heard him entirely.
"Where'd you go?" He repeats.
Again, you don't hear him. You purse your lips, the shame of not being able to understand people creeping in. "Oh, sorry, I didn't hear you."
"Where did you go?" Lo'ak repeats for the third time, slowing down his speech.
"Look, I'm really sorry–"
Neteyam catches up, slinging an arm over Lo'ak's shoulder. "What my brother means to ask is where you went yesterday, when you were supposed to be teaching us."
"Teach you?" You tilt your head as you think. Did the Olo'eyktan assign you something? Tsireya only took the opportunity because she saw you yesterday. You can't think of anything, though. "What am I supposed to teach you?"
Lo'ak sighs, "When you were teaching us how to free dive?"
The sigh makes you purse your lips. Your stupid ears were making people frustrated again. Still, you couldn't say anything when you didn't understand them. "...what about it?"
Tsireya comes to save you, noticing the struggle between you and the Sully's. "(y/n), here," She begins, pushing Lo'ak's hand off your shoulder, "struggles to hear, if you guys haven't noticed."
She signs to you, taking advantage of the fact they don't know how to sign. Do you want them to know your story?
You shake your head, to which she nods.
"It'd be much appreciated if you guys spoke louder, spoke clearer, and moved your mouths wider." She demonstrates the way they should speak as she instructs them. "It helps him to be able to read your lips until you learn how to sign."
"So he can hear us?" Lo'ak asks.
"Barely." You respond, reminding him that you are in fact in this conversation.
Neteyam nods, rubbing a burn into his brother's scalp. "Sorry, Lo'ak needs to remember these sorts of things."
"Shut up, bro." He pushes his brother away, causing him to skid sideways a few paces.
"(y/n), you would be a great help in teaching them sign language." Tsireya turns to you, signing as she speaks.
You understand, but you purse your lips. "Today? I sort of wanted to explore..."
"Doesn't have to be today, no," She shakes her head, "today is about breathing. If you want to leave, that's perfectly alright."
She smiles at you. Oh, Eywa, you loved Tsireya. She was so kind.
You take her permission and give a wave before diving into the water.
You swim farther into the ocean, trying to wash off your embarrassment with the cool water. It burned in your cheeks, anyway.
When the Olo'eyktan and Tsahìk found out about your hearing loss, you had already reached a point where there was no way to be healed. Everyone blamed your parents, their neglect for your ears and the proper care after a swim. But in truth, you knew you were also to blame.
It had been a long time since you were a burden. The Metkayina accommodated for your hearing loss. You were lucky to be born in the clan who originated the language that didn't require hearing. You had long since come to a comfortable life because of it.
When you realize that the embarrassment won't wear off so easy, you lay down on the sea grass covered sand—or lay down as best you can. The current pushes your head and limbs up.
Your intent was to relax, but the bioluminescent squid from yesterday pops up above you. You react quickly, reaching out and trapping it in your hand again.
You. You sign, awkward because you're one-handed, You embarrassed me in front of Kiri.
You'd missed two of its tentacles in grabbing it. It crosses its arms, giving you attitude, then pointed at you instead. Somehow, you understand.
Alright, fine. You huff, It's my fault. You release the squid, but this time it lingers. You forgive me?
It waves two of its tentacles up and down as if to nod its head.
You pluck a small fish from its school and hand it over as an extra peace offering. Sorry, fyìp.
It stares blankly at your offering. Clearly, it was refusing it, because it was definitely capable of catching that fish on its own. Also, you were ignoring the lesson Kiri taught you. You release the fish, which scurries back to its school, signing sorry again.
Why do you want to hang out with me?
The tentacles at its sides raise up in a shrug.
You lost your group. You purse your lips, extending your hand so that the squid may sit on it, even if it is redundant underwater. Are you trying to find a new one?
It shrugs again, though accepts the spot you give it on your hand.
Well, I suppose we're the same in that. You and I, we're special. I'm hard of hearing, and you're bioluminescent. You laugh inwardly, Although, those are two different things.
Fyìp does a twirl in your hand. It seems pleased.
Alright, let's go. I'll show you some of my favorite places.
☾⋆☆⋆☽
After the Sully's breathing exercises, Neteyam is eager to find you. He dives into the water, both practicing his breathing and speed.
For the third time, he's lucky to find you returning to the village for dinner, this time you were fortunately not caught up in exploring the sea.
Neteyam waves his hand in greeting. You do the same, though you hadn't realized he had more to say.
(y/n). He signs.
Immediately, your eyes light up. Neteyam is delighted.
Who taught you that? You sign. Your hands are a flurry of speed, but he manages to catch the words anyway.
He recognized "you" and "taught" and the distinct lack of "I", so he can assume what you asked. Tsireya. He signs simply, for she hadn't taught him much more than that and your names.
I'll teach you too.
He recognizes "I", "teach", and "you", and understands. He nods excitedly, then points up towards the surface. You follow.
"You're learning." You grin as you surface.
"Yeah." His smile turns bashful, "I want to learn so I can talk to you better." He even exaggerates the movement of his lips so that you may read them.
"Aww, that's sweet." Though you've only known him for so long, you give him a hug. "Thank you."
"No need to thank me." He shakes his head, still holding your elbows gently even as you part from the hug, "It's just what I should do."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Oh, you skxawng! You're late, you're late, you're late!
Too caught up within the serenity that the sea brought you, you had forgotten that you were supposed to be teaching the Sully's sign language!
You swim towards the shore with much hurry. Your body was preoccupied with a mission, to get there fast, and your mind was berating you for being stuck in your head so much. Because of it, you're not exactly focusing on the world around you.
"Oof!" You grunt as you bump into a column. It was one of the ones that supported the Marui pods above.
You pull yourself up onto your elbows on the pathway between pods, spitting out the water you'd caught in your mouth when you bumped so stupidly into a column.
Your squid friend jumps up too, sticking to your leg then climbing up to your shoulder. Its sticky tentacles feel weird on your skin, but you pay it no mind. Instead, you focus on cradling the spot on your forehead where you collided.
When Fyìp lands on your shoulder, you turn to it with a huff and go back to rubbing your head. Then, once you actually notice, you double take back to it.
"You can go above the surface?"
Now, no longer muffled by the water, you can just barely catch its squeal. Huh, so it was making sound all this time.
It twirls around your shoulder as if to say yes.
You turn your head back forward, resting your chin on the pathway. "I'm so stupid–wait." The Sully's and the chief's children are having the lesson quite a few ways ahead of you. They didn't seem to notice you. "It's them."
Fyìp's eyes almost seem to light up when it sees Kiri.
"Gah, should I really be joining them now? I'm so late!" You frown, thinking it over. "I'd be so lost," You narrate your thoughts for Fyìp, "every time I think about something to teach, what if they already taught it? What even is their teaching plan? I shouldn't have gone out today. Should've stayed to talk to Tsireya."
Thanks to your awful hearing and tunnel-vision, you don't notice Fyìp yapping in your ear. Only when it slaps you on the shoulder–it was a small animal, hardly hurt–do you pay attention to it.
"What?" You whine, now rubbing your shoulder.
Fyìp points forward vigorously, pulling its tentacle forwafd and back repeatedly.
"It'll be so embarrassing."
It crosses its arms in front of itself like a no. Even though you're sure it will be, Fyìp's insistence reminds you of your promise to Neteyam. It wasn't broken just yet.
"Okay, fine."
At your affirmation, Fyìp drops back into the water. You follow suit.

Learning a new language, later in your life, was always hard. Although, Jake Sully was the only one in his family with that experience.
"Lo'ak, why are you home early?" Jake and Neytiri rush over to him, sitting down as he does.
"Sign language is so hard." Lo'ak groans, his head down.
"Learning another language is hard," Jake affirms, putting a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. "but it's like everything else. With practice, you'll get the hang of it."
"At first, he was terrible at Na'vi too." Neytiri grins, causing Jake to roll his eyes.
"Yes, and I became better." He gives her a pointed look, to which she only replies by baring her fangs playfully.
"Well, it's more than that." Lo'ak frowns, looking down at his hands, the very reason he was so different. "I have five fingers! Everyone else has four. Whenever there's a sign that requires fingers, everyone stares at me and Kiri. Their looks are so blank, but I can tell what they're thinking."
"So why didn't you say something?" Jake asks. "It's unlike you to not do anything."
It was a good question that left him silent as he thought. He didn't really know the answer, not as he dug through the surface of his mind. As he searched deeper, he found an answer, but he didn't really want to believe it. "It's because... Tsireya and (y/n) were there."
"And..?" Neytiri prods for him to continue.
"I don't want to disappoint them..." Lo'ak purses his lips, "or be a burden to them."
"Son," Jake places his hands on both Lo'ak's shoulders, causing him to finally look up at him. Jake wanted to be sure that Lo'ak understood the sentiment behind his words. "you're only learning. You can't disappoint them. And if they get upset at you, then that's their fault because they do not understand you and who you are."
"Next time," Neytiri speaks up, catching their attention, "make an arrangement. Find a way to work around it. Alright?"
Lo'ak nods, "Okay."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Usually, you were the one sought out within the Metkayina if they ever needed you because you were always doing something in the ocean. The sea was vast and cluttered, from seawall terrace to the shore, it was all within the realm of possibility of where you were.
But, for once, you're seeking someone out.
"Kiri!" You call, "I was looking for you."
She emerges from the ocean, ringing the water out of her hair. Too caught up in the sights and feeling Eywa in the sea, she had missed dinner. You could relate to that, so you had to make sure she was taking care of herself.
"What is it?" Kiri asks, treading carefully on her words.
"I saved you some dinner." You hand her a leaf dish of fish.
"Oh." Only once she sees the food does she remember her growling stomach and hunger. "Thank you." She takes the leaf from you gingerly but begins to scarf it down once it's in her own hands.
"It's no problem." You begin, "Sometimes I accidentally skip dinner too. I know the feeling of great hunger in the morning."
Kiri nods in understanding.
"Make sure to get the water out of your ears." You enthusiastically demonstrate by tipping your head to the side and tapping the side of it. "You don't want to end up like me."
Kiri almost chokes on her food. She coughs and puts it on the sand temporarily. "Like you?"
"You know," She doesn't know how you can retain a smile like this. "bad hearing and all."
Ever since you'd lost the majority of your hearing, the adults started using you as an example of what not to do. Not only did they advice the young ones while using your example, they also advised your peers. At first, it was embarrassing, but you began to understand why you were an example and had long since grown used to the embarrassment it brought.
"(y/n), are you using yourself as an example?"
"What?" You tease, "Wanna end up like me?"
"No, (y/n), that's not what I mean." She takes both your hands in hers. "You shouldn't be using yourself as an example of what happens if you don't take care of yourself."
"Why not?" It was pretty normal to you now. You purse your lips, "Everyone uses me as an example. I am what happens if you don't–"
"Because," Kiri breathes out in disbelief, "you're more than an example. You're your own person. You're more than your past mistakes."
"You're right," You snicker at the thought, "just like last time."
"I'm just saying what has to be said." She reassures, rubbing her thumbs over the back of your hands, "Value yourself more."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
The trend of you seeking other people out, when it'd always been the opposite before, followed along for Lo'ak.
After your sign language lessons, you retreated into the ocean to clear your thoughts. Now that you had what you were looking for, you had to find Lo'ak, which thankfully doesn't take long.
"Lo'ak!" You call as your eyes find him.
He himself seemed to be searching for you too, so when he sees you, his eyes brighten. He covers the ground between you two quickly. "Hey, I was just looking for you."
"Me too. Do you wanna go first?"
He nods, "I found out a way we can work around my fingers."
"Your fingers?" You tilt your head forward.
"Yeah." He shows them off, wiggling all five for you.
"What about them?"
"Oh," He realizes the question wasn't because you'd somehow forgotten how many he had, but because you hadn't heard the rest of his sentence. He speaks with his mouth wider for you, "I found a way to work around them."
"That's what I was trying to find you for, actually." You snicker, "I found a way to work with them."
"With them?" He hadn't thought it possible.
"Yep." You grin, "Oh, but you were going first. Go on."
"Right, um," Lo'ak lifts one of his hands with the other, up to your view, then he pulls his last finger down. "I was thinking we could tie down my pinkie."
"Your pinkie?"
"My last finger, the smallest, it's called the pinkie."
"Okay, right." You nod.
"Tie it down with like a, um," He snaps his fingers while he thinks. "rope or something until I learn to stop using it."
After hearing his thought, you burst out laughing. It leaves Lo'ak confused. He stands there awkwardly, arms falling down to his sides with a building shame because he can't understand what you were laughing at.
"Sorry, um," You shake your head to wipe the laughter from your face, "that's too cruel, Lo'ak."
"Cruel?" He asks, eyebrows furrowed.
"Yeah, don't you think? It's just like what your sister taught me. We shouldn't take things against their will." You hold his hand to bring it back between the two of you and press his pinkie down against his palm. The force you put on his knuckle and the position is rather uncomfortable for Lo'ak, and it shows in his face. "See?"
"Yeah, you're right." He mutters, then realizes his mistake. "Sorry, I mean, you're right." He enunciates louder and clearer. "Just that... I couldn't really find any other way."
"Well, I was thinking we could just use your middle fingers as a unit." You bring his pinkie back up and press your fingers on his middle fingers, "What do you call them?"
"This is the middle finger," He wiggles it and specifically avoids accidentally showing it off to you, even if you probably don't know what it means. "and this is the ring finger."
"Okay." You nod, understanding quickly. Then, you press your fingers against the ring's left and the middle's right and hold them together. "We can consider these as my middle finger."
You hold your hand up next to his, pulling your other fingers down to show him the middle. He almost laughs and tells you the meaning, but decides it's funnier if you don't know.
"Say, "happen" for example." You use his hand as if it were your own, as yours was holding it, and press the side of yourd against it. Then, you bring it to the side quickly whilst pushing your fingers wide apart. "To mimic my middle finger, you can use your middle and ring fingers together."
"But... wouldn't it be confusing?" Lo'ak argues, looking up into your eyes.
You turn away from him, biting your lip, "Much the same as you're... accommodating for me by learning sign language, we must accommodate for you too. It's only right."
"Accommodate..." He hated that word, and clearly, you were just as ashamed to use it. It had been used all throughout your lives because of your particularities. "Let's not say that."
You turn back up to him, a glimmer of hope within your eyes. "What do you mean?"
"Let's not say we're accommodating for our differences." He turns his hand, the one that rested upon your palm, and uses it to hold yours reassuringly. "Let's just say that we're doing this for each other."
He loves the way your face lights up with a smile. "That sounds good."
☾⋆☆⋆☽
Thanks to Tsireya's efforts, the Sully's had learned the ways of the Metkayina.
They were still different, they were Omatikaya, and they and the Metkayina would always have their differences. However, despite their leaner bodies, they could catch up with you in the water; despite other physical differences like smaller lungs, they could stay underwater almost as long as you. They still preferred bow and arrow over spear and ikran over ilu.
Soon enough, they were good enough at free diving that they were allowed to perform their first Iknimaya trial, catching a small shell thrown into the sea.
Of course, it was the first because it was the easiest, the Metkayina completed it when they were young; but still, it called for a celebration.
Ronal denied a coming of age celebration. It was past the season for it, the tulkuns weren't home yet, and the Metkayina didn't know the Sully's enough for it to have any real sentiment.
It didn't matter to you, though. All they really wanted was a celebration with friends (which Ao'nung so gladly volunteered to not participate in).
You brought them into the sea for the celebration. For once, it wasn't a test of their breathing, speed, or swimming form. It was just exploring, enjoying the water; and they hadn't done that since they tamed their ilu.
As you dove into the sea, Fyìp swam to be near you. It seemed unbothered by the stares of awe he received.
Kiri grinned, signing to you, Fyìp ioang?
Yeah! Call him Fyìp now. You offer it a spot on your palm, which it accepts. You thrust your hand forward to show them all. He warmed up to me, forgave me.
Forgave you? Lo'ak signed. After your arrangement, he'd really gotten good at sign language.
Though the celebration was not meant to be a test, it was a great demonstration of how they were on their way to master sign language.
I believe I told you about the lesson Kiri taught me. I caught Fyìp to show it off to her, and she taught me I shouldn't have done so, even through all my curiosity. You nod at the thought, Wise words.
Kiri tucks a hair behind her ear, It just made sense to me. Not something wise or anything.
Sure. You huff out a laugh, then turn around to swim further in. Fyìp clings onto your shoulder.
The sights were already amazing. The Sully's were no longer limited by depth or obstacles now that they knew the way of water, so now they could see everything the sea had to offer.
You turn back to them again with an offer, You guys wanna see one of my favorite places? Knowing that they'll definitely agree, you turn back around and start leading the way.
It doesn't take long before you are standing before a marvel.
It was a cove of coral, fish, and many more ocean creatures. They were all colorful and eye-catching, but the main attraction was the ilu. It was similar to the Banshee Rookery in the Ayram alusìng.
We don't always tame ilu bred from other ilu at the village. Sometimes, we come here, though rarely. You explain.
These ilu were wilder, more aloof, but they still retained their friendly nature with the Na'vi. So long as you do not anger them, we can hang out with them.
The Sully's were practically let loose around the area. As you already knew much of it, you laid down on a rock at the heart of it and simply watched. Fyìp stuck around you, catching stray fish for dinner.
Kiri easily communicated with the ilu. Even if they were already friendly, they seemed even warmer with her.
Lo'ak managed to find the more playful ilu and had somehow gotten himself into a game of tag. He seemed to be one of the runners. He ducked behind coral, up and around rock arches. He was holding his own, despite the ilu naturally being much faster. Tsireya found herself watching too, and was laughing at Lo'ak's panicked face as he narrowly avoided being caught by an ilu.
As Lo'ak and Kiri both found their own things to do, it seemed Neteyam was stuck with Tuk. But she wasn't a burden to him. What kind of big brother would he be if she was?
He held her by the hand and admired some of the smaller creatures with her, although it seemed as though she had other intentions.
She escaped Neteyam's grasp and began swimming away with vigor. For a moment, Neteyam panicked, rushing after her with alarm. However, he soon relaxed once she saw she was going to you.
She waved hello adorably with a grin then signed. As the youngest, she had a bit more trouble with signing, but you understood her. Why do you like being in the water so much?
Well, it's very serene. You reply.
Neteyam caught up. He seemed interested too. Is that it?
You shrug, Sort of. There's some other reasons, but... You took in Tuk's hopeful eyes. She was far too cute to be denied. I could tell them to you.
Please? Will you? She swims closer, holding onto your wrists so that you may still sign.
Perhaps Tsireya rounded them up; otherwise, you have no idea why, as signing doesn't make sound, but they all round up around you. Even Fyìp swims closer.
It was a bit nerve-wracking, having all those eyes on you, but you had grown close to all of them. Nothing bad would come of it if you told them.
Okay.
Tuk's smile grows wider, she swims away so the others can see you too.
Ever since I was a kid, the ocean was so entrancing. It was majestic, a different world from the one above. The other kids my age, they preferred to play with one another. I preferred to explore the ocean. Even though I was hardly used to the world above, I still preferred exploring underwater.
Tsireya taught you that the sea gives and takes. While it gave me a world to love, it also took my hearing because I was negligent towards my ears. Eventually, the sea was more than just the world I loved. It was also the only place I could be normal.
Lo'ak and Kiri listen more carefully when you mention the word normal. It was something they both struggled with.
Everybody needs to sign to speak. You don't need your ears to listen to them, you only need your eyes; and my eyes, I still have. Underwater, I swim and speak and listen just like everyone else.
Tsireya swims closer, a frown on her face. She holds your elbow endearingly, You are just like everyone else.
Yeah, you are. Neteyam does the same, swimming closer. You are Na'vi.
We are Na'vi. Lo'ak signs.
Though we are all different, we are all Eywa's children. Kiri signs. It doesn't matter in what way we are different, my fingers, our blood, your hearing...
Lo'ak's eyebrows... Neteyam signs. Said eyebrows furrow at the teasing. Lo'ak retaliates by squeezing Neteyam's exposed neck, as his brother always does to him. Neteyam pushes him away.
You guys, you all understand. You smile, I'm so sorry that the Metkayina treat you differently.
Lo'ak shakes his head, If it is something we must teach them, we'll make them learn. He smiles, So long as we have great teachers like you and Tsireya to back us up, right?
You roll your eyes–he thinks it's endearing–at him but nod. We'll teach them that we're all the same.
Tomorrow will be a good day for that. Tsireya signs, Let's not forget we are celebrating your first Iknimaya trial.
Fyìp does an encouraging twirl that makes everyone smile.
To tomorrow. You sign.

neteyam would sooo be super cuddly and lovey when you're in your hammock.
neteyam x gn!na'vi reader
"Neteyamm. Let goo." you squeal as his head lays on your abdomen and his arms wrap around your waist tightly. "How about no." He chuckles and lays comfortably on you and lets out a big buff of air.
"I love you, you know?" His voice muffled by your blue striped skin, you rest your arms on his freshly braided hair and slowly massage-like his head. You smile and look at the boy below you.
He turns his head and takes a glimpse at your face before attacking your stomach with soft butterfly kisses. You giggle as he leads up higher and higher up until he gives a fat sloppy kiss to your cheek.
Giggles and laughter come out of your guys mouths as he grabs you into his arms and pulls you on top of him.
after a few minutes of laughter you guys slowly start to relax and lay skin-to-skin with each other. "I love you too." you say softly laying your head on his chest while caressing his biceps.
hope you guys enjoyed ! there is an Ao'nung fic in the making.. i’m having such bad writers block.

I stumble upon your writing and I actually really love it. Is it okay if I request on Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Ao'nung with a human reader with their first time hearing human music? And they actually end up liking it and the human reader teaching them with fun human dance? Again your writing is amazing! 😊💙
neteyam, lo’ak, ao'nung x human! reader
ft— neteyam, lo’ak, ao'nung warnings— nothing that i can think of... please tell me if i do need to add anything! gn! reader, the boys & reader are friends but they both like each other, fluff!! a/n— MY FIRST EVER AVATAR REQUEST!! and im so glad you love my writing ^^ im not really a fan of ao'nung since he's sort of mean but! im sure he'll change, didn’t know if it was platonic or not so i just went w/ friends but crushing. hope you enjoy this love! synopsis— letting him listen to some of your favourite music, you don't expect him to like it, but he does.
you had always kept your phone and earphones with you, it was like your comfort(ish), listening to music was comforting.
even after landing on Pandora and meeting the omaticaya clan and the metkayina clan, you always kept your phone in your pocket.
he was always so interested and intrigued by your phone, pressing the screen and clicking on the apps, not knowing what it did.
one day, you were on your phone, taking pictures of the reef when you felt someone behind you, it was like someone tall looming over you, trying to look at what you’re doing.
and you were correct, he was looming over you, trying to see what you were doing
“im taking a picture, remember what that means?” you say, putting your phone down, he nods.
you two sit down on the sand, using the trees leaves as shade, you pull out your phone and press on an icon that looked like “ ♫ “, you put your hands in your pocket and grab out something that looked tangled.
it was quite long and black, it had two stubs at the top. upon grabbing them, he looked at you, eyes filled with curiosity.
you plug the earphones into the designated spot for the earphones, you put one of the stubs into your ear, he watched your every move.
he sat beside you, looking at the long black strings connected to your phone when you lent him one of the other half of the black stub.
he quirked his eyebrow, eyeing the mysterious string looking thing, you offered to him again, this time putting your arm out a bit more further
he reluctantly takes it and observes it, he sees you pointing to his ear indicating that he’s meant to put it in his ear
he puts the bud in his ear and doesn’t hear anything, he gives you a look, “what’s meant to happen?” he asks, you put your phone in the middle and press a button, that’s when something starts to play... the volume low, you didn’t want his ears hurt or anything since it would be his first time listening to music.
neteyam x human! reader
He doesn’t know what to make of this, it’s his very first time listening to music, neteyam doesn’t understand, how could he hear another person’s voice through this little bud? many things and questions are going on in his mind, but most importantly, he can hear the melody in his ear. It’s nothing like what you’d hear at a ceremony, with percussions/natural instruments. It’s directly in his ear. You see his eyes squinting from confusion, his ears twitching. The volume is low but hearable, neteyam is still, not moving a muscle, while you on the other hand was bobbing your head and occasionally humming to the tune. Neteyam stares at you, wondering why you’re moving like that. Your eyes are closed, taking in the music, enjoying the music. Neteyam can’t help but feel all these unexplainable emotions and feelings, he doesn’t know what to say or think, but what he does know is that he enjoys it. The rhythm and beat is enjoyable, the person who was singing sounded nice, but not as good as the other singers from the omaticaya clan. The way you express how much you love and enjoy the song makes the song much more enjoyable, it even starts to make him feel good, smiling even. You catch him humming to the tune very few times, he had memorized the tune after hearing it repeat. The volume is always kept low, if it goes any higher, it might irritate neteyam or hurt his eardrums, that’s what you think anyways. About halfway through the song you press your finger on your phone, pausing the song. When hearing the song stop, neteyam looks at you confused, “why did you stop it?” neteyam questions, you turn your head to face him, you take out your earbud and when you do, he follows your action. “Well i didn’t know if you liked it or not so...” you reply while shrugging your shoulders, now focusing on the reef. There was a pregnant pause before he spoke again, “I do like it, it has a nice.. feeling.” he mumbles, his tail slapping the sand, once again, it was silent, it was killing you, the neteyam pressing a button on your phone, playing the song. You looked back at neteyam who was now staring at you, he had the earbud in his ear, the other one in his hand, neteyam held out your earbud and you took it without any hesitation. Your put the earbud in and you could hear the music, but instead of paying attention to the song, you paid attention to neteyam who was bobbing his head lightly, it looked like he was trying to mimic your movement. He was adorable. “Enjoying it?” you ask while chuckling, neteyam stops bobbing his head and gives you a nod. “Yes, i like it.” You’re not shocked or surprised, neteyam had always been intrigued by the “sky people’s” culture when he first met you, just as you were with their culture. So it didn’t shock you very much when he said that he enjoyed and liked the song. You pick up your phone, being careful not to stretch out the earbuds, you then swipe to play another song, neteyam remembered what you did so just incase he wanted to listen to music and then switch songs.. While listening to the songs neteyam asked you a question, it was if the sky people danced. If they danced to their favourite song or songs in general. You heard his question and quickly paused the song, you took out your earbud and set it down, neteyam sets his one down as well. “Yes we do teyam. We dance to our favourite songs, we dance at balls, graduations, whenever we feel like it.” you state. Neteyam nods to tell you that he understands you, “what are balls? and graduation?” neteyam asks, pronouncing the word ‘graduation’ with an accent, he had never of that word before so his accent was pretty clear. “Balls is basically dancing elegantly with a partner in a big room, with very fancy music. Not like the one we were listening to,” you look at neteyam to make sure that he’s understanding you, he gives you a nod which meant to ‘carry on’. “Graduations is when someone from grade 5-12 finishes their grade and most times they party you know? to celebrate the end of year and grade. For the year 12′s it is a very special and important time, they go out to find jobs, to find a place to live and to live adulthood.” you finish answering, neteyam seemed a bit.. confused. He was being fed a lot of information that he didn’t really understand, which made him feel a little bit too much and you can’t blame him. Neteyam sat still, looking at you. You’re staring at him when you have an idea, you didn’t know if it’d suck or not but it’s worth a shot. You stood up, grabbing your phone with your earphones attached, neteyam continues to stare at you, wondering why you got up out of nowhere, that was until you spoke. “Would you like me to teach you how to dance? the human way that is..” You’re standing there awkwardly, waiting for a response when you see neteyam get up, his much taller figure looms over you. Neteyam looked shy, his ears pointed downwards, his tail swaying side to side, avoiding eye contact with you only for a few seconds before he held your hands, “teach me.” This interaction made your heart pound rapidly, you hesitantly pulled your hand away, taking a few deep breaths you beamed at him, “of course!” and from that you unplugged your earphone from your phone, you put the earphones in your pocket and scrolled on your phone before stopping to press on a song, a slow and classical song plays, neteyam was confused. It sounded so, soft, “elegant” and slow. You went back to neteyam and held his arm, “don’t worry ‘kay? If you’re uncomfortable or want to stop just tell me.” You spend the next few 30 minutes and possibly even an hour teaching him how to sway side to side, twirl you around, and trying to waltz but it was hard to do so when he’s literally 3 feet taller than you, AND when he’s trying so hard to not step on your foot, it’d be one, embarrassing and two, it’d hurt your foot and would probably hurt for days. When you and neteyam got bored of dancing to the classical song, you switched up the music. This time it was the same song that neteyam first heard, it would be much easier to teach since neteyam already enjoys the song. After picking the song you go back where neteyam stood just started to... dance. There isn’t a specific way to dance when you’re enjoying something, like a NPC, you just dance however you feel like. You moved one of your shoulders up and the other down(if it was in the birds eye view) and did the opposite and then repeat, your head bobbing slightly. Neteyam followed what you did closely and started to mimic your dance moves, he was stiff and tense at first but seeing how you really seemed enjoyed everything he loosened up a bit and let his joy take over. You spun around and danced, and whenever there was a drum part you’d stop dancing and drum to the beat, neteyam was confused at first but upon hearing the drum, he pieced one and two together and understood, you did it enough times that even neteyam started to do it, the people walking past you and neteyam would give you weird looks because what are you two doing? but neither you or neteyam cared, you two were just enjoying your time together(or he’d shoot them looks which would make them instantly look the other way and scurry away while you’re still dancing, eyes closed, and when you open your eyes you see neteyam enjoying himself, not staring daggers at people). The entire time neteyam’s watching you, observing you, admiring you. The way your eyes light up and widen when your favourite part of the song comes on, the way you sing along, you looked so happy. Your expressions and dancing was enough to make him smile and tag along, neteyam watched you the entire time, he could never get enough of you. At the end of your ‘lesson’ you were tired but neteyam, on the other hand was not at all. It was like a warm up to him. “When can you teach me next time?” neteyam asks, still standing up, staring at you who’s sitting on the sand absolutely drained. Taking a few deep breaths you look right back at him, “eager to learn, hm?” you say, a smile adorning your face. He nods and sits down beside you, you two don’t talk for some times, both thinking. You may even teach him the cha cha or other famous dances (not any tiktok dances) that you think he might enjoy. “Maybe tomorrow?” you reply, neteyam nods his head. Whatever you teach him, he’ll always remember and one day you two might dance together, as friends, best friends or mates.
lo’ak x human! reader
Lo’ak’s ear twitches, it felt.. weird to say the least. The music, the sounds, they were coming from this small bud and entered in his ear. He has never experienced this before, he’s nervous. Once he sees you dancing to the music, he eases a little. If you’re enjoying this then he should too, his eyes paying much attention to you. The entire time, you were never out of his sight. You were sitting on the sand, listening to your favourite song, you were bobbing your head side to side to the beat of the song and sang the lyrics. Lo’ak listened to your singing, and it felt as if this voice went all through his body, into his veins and blood. Slowly but surely lo’ak started to slightly bob his head as well. His tail whipped around, his ears twitching upwards, he remains quiet just watching you doing your thing. “What do you think of it?” you question, pressing the pause button on your phone, lo’ak hums, he ponders for a bit before answering, “i... i liked it? it was nice to listen to, i don’t know what to say, how can i hear this other person through this little... object?” lo’ak spoke, he sounded hesitant to speak his mind even though he thought of his answer. He held up the little bud to your face, “well, uhm, you just connect this earphone to your phone and everything that you normally hear that comes out of the phone will come out through the earphones, you put it in your ear to hear, you can’t listen to it if you don’t have it in.” you explain with a faint smile on your face, you hope the he understands and he does, somehow. Lo’ak gives you a nod and goes on to ask you more questions about the song you two were just listening to, what it meant since every song has a meaning and others. Answering all of his questions made lo’ak even more curious, he wanted to know all the details, even if you knew little yourself. When he asked you about if the sky people danced as well, you nod your head, “of course we do! why wouldn’t we?” you reply, lo’ak shrugged. After receiving that answer your eyebrows furrowed, out of the blue you shot up, which resulted in lo’ak flinching. “Are you okay?” lo’ak asks worriedly, “why wouldn’t i be?” you respond before getting up, a gentle smile adorned your face, “want me to teach you?” you suggest, for a few (what felt like) long seconds lo’ak thinks, not before long he gives you a nod, “sure” and with that answer he gets up and you start to scroll on your phone, trying to find a song to play, after scrolling for a bit you found one of your favourite songs and pressed play. Hearing the music playing, lo’ak’s ear twitches up, his eyes kept on your figure the entire time. You then explain to him that there wasn’t anything you needed to teach him, there’s nothing specific to do when dancing, you just.. dance. It all depends on what and how you’re feeling. Lo’ak is confused, how he is just supposed to dance to his feelings? normally you learn dances from the teacher, you’re prepared. “How do you.. dance like that?” lo’ak asks, you shrug in response, “let the music take over your body.” you then say. You continue to dance while lo’ak stood still, watching your every move, watching the way your body moved when you danced, his eyes trained on you and only you. You went over to your phone and turn up the volume only by a bit then resumed dancing, lo’ak watched as you danced once again, he was hesitant to dance at first but after a few encouraging words he finally builds up the courage to start dancing along with you. Lo’ak doesn’t know what to do but observing your moves proved to be useful as he starts to copy your movements and dance with you. “Nice moves lo’ak!” you cried out while giving him a sweet smile. Once your words were registered in his mind his movements seemed to slow down, lo’ak looked much shyer now, his eyes downcast, his tail swaying from shyness or excitement, you don’t know, but what you do know is that he’s slowly enjoying this, his dancing at first was tense, he was stiff, but now? it’s like a boy going from having no balls to having balls which is a huge step. When lo’ak was getting the hang of it, you taught him how to twirl (you) and the cha cha, yes, the cha cha, and in all honestly lo’ak absolutely loved it when he twirled you, it looked fun, he wished you were just a bit taller though so maybe you could twirl him too... Lo’ak loved every second of this little lesson, the sky people’s culture differs from the na’vi one, but he has grown to (sort of) like it, being intrigued by some of the things that they don’t have but you have, curiosity always fills his mind, which may lead to good come outs, and bad come outs. Lo’ak is sure that he enjoyed todays lesson, even asking you if you could teach him more dances or things that sky people normally do which you agree at. Lo’ak goes to sleep that night, thinking about they way you held his hand, his arm, the way you stared at him when he danced with you, your eyes were on him. Needless to say, he slept with a smile on his face.
ao’nung x human! reader
He doesn’t even know why he’s listening to “whatever this is”, butttt since you said that you enjoyed this he indulged. To say the least he’s fascinated by this small “device”, what you call it. Ao’nung hears a melodic tune in his ear, he’s confused and will probably be forever until you answer his question(s), how could this happen? he finds it odd and is already asking you questions. “How does it work?” “what it the meaning of that? what is the purpose?” “who made them?” “how does it just work like that when you put it in your phone?”, he’s bombarding you with questions and you can’t even answer them due to the fact that he’s overlapping each question one by one, you have to stop him from questioning you any further or you might be overwhelmed with all the questions. When you tell ao’nung to “stop for a second” he immediately stops, looking at you with confusion for a second but seeing how your eyes squinted and your confused look on your face he pieces one and two together and figures that you’re overwhelmed by his questions, he mutters a quiet ‘sorry’ under his breath, but you don’t catch that. After a few seconds you resume talking, this time explaining the purpose of the earphones and how it works. You paused the song to talk and he almost looks disappointed to say the least.. his face droops for a bit but once you look up he looks fine, weird. Once you were done explaining, ao’nung processes everything in his mind, so you just plug it in the phone and it works? wow. You could see how ao’nung still looked confused, thinking of something to make him understand it more, (since he was really intrigued by your earphones) you finally think of something and turn to face ao’nung who was staring at you but it felt more like he was staring right beside you. It was like he was zoning out. ″Ao’nung?” you whisper, poking his arm while looking at his face to see if he’ll react and thankfully he did. His shook his head lightly and looked down to look at you, once seeing that he was now focusing on you, his gaze was on you. You cleared your throat and asked your question, “would you.. would you like me to teach you how to dance? the human way.”, ao’nung is still, he doesn’t know what to say but his big ego says otherwise. ″Sure, it probably isn’t hard anyway.” he answers, giving you a smug look on his face and shrugging before getting up, rolling your eyes playfully you grab your phone and press “play”. Ao’nung is confident that he’ll do amazing, no mistakes, absolutely nothing. He’ll nail it. But this lesson proved to be harder than he thought. Getting up, you walked over to where ao’nung stood and was he so much taller than you, it made you knees felt like jelly and made your heart pound 100 times faster... but you snapped out of your thoughts and started your “lesson”, bobbing your head you started to sing the lyrics, “aren’t you meant to teach me how to dance your way?” you nod, still singing, “why aren’t you doing that then?” he asks, “just listen to the song, and once you really start to feel it, you’ll start to dance.” you respond with a shrug. Ao’nung tsks and crosses his arm, eyeing you as you started to do these random moves, it was new to him, and it certainly made you look funny but he found it amusing. Gradually ao’nung felt this weird feeling, it was like warmth, it radiated through out his body, was it the sun? can’t be. The song, you singing made him feel some type of way, and to his dismay (?) he enjoyed it, he liked it. A smile creeps onto his face, you’re enjoying the song and look at ao’nung who is now dancing along with you but his dancing is... a bit stiff, you almost cringe. So in order to relax him you decide to change the song to something more relaxing and classic. Yes, classical music. Changing the music, ao’nung stared at you, confused on why you changed the song when a soft, slow melody plays. You walk up to ao’nung, “twirl me around, here,” you mutter, taking his hand and making him hold your hand, ao’nung can’t help but feel his cheeks heating up, his heart beating much faster now. You gesture him to raise his hand but once he does he almost lifts you up, you yelp and he stops. Ao’nung chuckles before apologizing. Letting out a huff you accept his apology and tell him to spin you around, he does so, and he does it quite well. You tell him to “flex his arm out” and “step back a bit”, he complies, and when he does you do too. You and ao’nung practice this for a while until he’s finally not so stiff. Every time he made progress you would praise him and clap, making him feel more shy under your gaze. That made him want to keep on practicing and dancing with you. While you two were practicing and dancing, ao’nung kept his eyes on you but upon seeing a familiar group walking beside where you two were, he shifted his gaze from you to them. It was his friend group, sure they were all his friends but he couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed, his friends caught him dancing with you, someone they despised due to the fact you weren’t one of them, na’vi. They were giggling and pointing at you two, covering their mouths to speak about you or him, but after looking at you, he regained his confidence. He looked back at his group, staring daggers at them. If looks could kill they would be on the floor already. Ao’nung mouthed “leave.” and gave them a stern and dark look, his friends rolled their eyes and walked away, waving their hands around and grumbling. Once they were out of his sight he turned to look at you who was now looking at him, you looked annoyed. “What’s your excuse now?” you say sternly. Ao’nung looks at you wide eyed before apologizing and explaining that he saw his friends and that they were bothering him. You eye him, squinting your eyes before letting out a “hmph” and changing the song, ao’nung sighed in relief, at least you didn’t scold him for not practicing when he agreed on doing so, but that relief didn’t last when you told him that he was going to learn how to do the waltz. He had you talking about “waltzing” to one of the sully kids and it did not sound fun at all, with you mentioning how some people step on each others shoe. It wouldn’t be fun if he stepped on your foot, but if you stepped on his foot it’d be nothing. You grinned upon seeing how ao’nung looked like he didn’t want to do this. You two spent the next hours waltzing, he hated it, but as long as it was with you then he didn’t mind. The feeling of your touches made his heart beat faster, how you gently touched his arm, the way you guided his hands to where they need to be made him stiff, to which you frowned upon and went on about how ‘no matter how many times you un-stiffen him, he always end up being stiff and tense again!!”. It’s not like he can control it though. At the end of the lesson you and ao’nung are walking back to where the the village is, both of your hands brushing against each other occasionally which makes you two look at each other, then when both of your eyes meet you both instantly turn away. There is silence before ao’nung clears his throat which makes you look up at him, “when can you teach me again..?” he asks, you raise your eyebrows at him and shrug your shoulders, “hm.. maybe never?” you joke, ao’nung face drops and he stops dead in his tracks. You’re quick to give your real answer though, “wait! im just kidding! tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon.” you say, a tinge of panic laced your words. Once ao’nung hears your reply he eases and resumes walking, with you catching up with him. “You’ve got to stop that.” “stop what?” “teasing me.”, you roll your eyes playfully and he smiles. “More like you need to stop teasing me on a daily basis.”

summary: metkayinan! reader who is expected to become the next olo’eyktan but wishes nothing more than to shed their responsibilities and simply run away from all their problems meets the sully family. they speak of them in defense in front of their people, catching the attention of a certain omaticayan boy.
word count: 5k words
pairings: neteyam x gn! ao'nung's older twin! reader
basically: - reader is the oldest child of ronal and tonowari by a few seconds (fraternal twins w/ ao'nung, you can imagine yourself however you like) - No idea how old tsireya actually is so i'm saying shes 1 year younger than reader and ao’nung for the sake of my sanity - Take a shot everytime you see the word “you” or “your”
warnings: literally 90% no neteyam in this part because this is like the backstory of the reader’s life. parents being overbearing per usual, feeling guilty for putting yourself over others, literally nothing else idk
dictionary:
tsaheylu: the bond/neural connection made between two beings gill mantle: the creature that provides the ability to respire underwater (given to Neytiri by Kiri when they were swimming out of the sunken ship) marui: the tents the na’vi live in Tree of Souls: the tree that is said to be the closest connection to Eywa on Pandora (the tree that helped Jake transfer into his avatar body permanently) irayo: "thank you" in the na'vi language
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | masterlist
Both you and your twin brother Ao’nung had been considered blessed gifts from Eywa ever since the day you both were born.
at least that's what every elder in Awa’atlu said to the both of you, for as long as you two could remember. The first twins in the Metkayina clan to have been born for hundreds of years, they emphasised.
Since you were just children, it had already been clear to the whole village that you and Ao’nung were far more talented than other kids, and your parents, especially your father, were extremely proud of the both of you for that reason, his chest always puffing out more than usual and lips turned into a smile whenever someone complimented his children in front of him.
At the age of 7, you both were skilled at using your spears, having amazingly swift reaction time and swimming at speeds comparable to other na’vi 2 times your age. Everyone around you would always whisper in awe of both of your talents, always speaking highly of both of you equally, since you were on par with one another.
But despite how similar you both were in talent and intelligence, it was clear which one of you had the heart of a leader.
You were always one step ahead of Ao’nung, especially in the literal sense, protecting him and guiding him through the waters, teaching him to do things that you learned first. And whenever you played with the other children and a fight ensued, you always were quick to find the way to a peaceful solution.
Your parents noticed this of course, and they quickly started talking about you becoming the future olo’eyktan during family dinners, which at first you had no opposition to, instead beaming at the prospect of becoming a leader for your brothers and sisters.
But inevitably throughout the years you grew tired. Tired of your mother always nagging you about looking presentable even if you were only going for a walk along the shore, tired of your father always expecting nothing less than exceptional from you, tired of everyone around you always asking for assistance in everyday tasks and being the person that they looked for when disagreements started.
Of course, you loved your family and your people. But it truly drained you to put their needs over your own. You had no time to enjoy the feeling of the water brushing against your skin, to take in the beauty of Pandora’s waters and the underwater creatures that Eywa created.
Your siblings Ao’nung and Tsireya, despite having their own expectations from your parents, were still always able to have fun and enjoy the waters and make close friends that they could trust and talk to, while you were stuck helping the elderly and the young.
But every time you thought of rejecting helping others it always hurt you inside, because what were you doing thinking like that? You were the future olo’eyktan, you couldn’t not help your people, right?
It wasn’t like you didn’t have the ability to help, you were very much capable, so everytime you had the thought to say no, you pushed it far away in the back of your mind, thinking you were selfish for even coming up with such an absurd idea.
But one morning when you were 13, you finally had quite enough of having to endure all your responsibilities. So you did what every other pubescent teenager would do; you formed an escape plan.
In the bright and early morning when you know absolutely nobody would be awake, you snuck past your parents and siblings while they slept, going out of your family’s marui, asking for forgiveness from Eywa with every step you took.
But you didn’t regret it, not for a second. Once you were far enough from all the marui, you ran to one of the shores farthest from the centre of the island. At last, you were able to really feel the sand between your toes and take a deep breath of the salty air.
It smelled of the ocean, you thought, while closing your eyes and outstretching your arms, your smile so big it hurt. You walked along the beach a little while longer, relishing in your extremely rare moment of freedom and alone time.
Until you heard the morning horn sound. Your smile instantly disappeared, realising that soon people would be up and about and that you would have to return to your duties.
No, your heart said. I don’t want to. And for once, your brain didn’t tell you to go back. It didn’t say you were being selfish.
Instead, your heart rate went faster, every beat against your chest urging you to run. So you disappeared in the glittering water before anyone could see, swimming away while being careful to not be seen and only coming up for air behind rocks.
You didn’t know where you were swimming, you just wanted to be somewhere that wasn’t surrounded by other na’vi constantly asking for help right after you were done assisting another.
Through tsaheylu, you attached a gill mantle to your back, allowing you to breathe under the water. Since you didn’t need to resurface for a while, you swam at your own pace, enjoying the colourful sea life that surrounded you.
The coldness on your skin was refreshing, you could finally enjoy the feeling of swimming deep into the water without bringing a spear to hunt fish. You glided through the water, closing your eyes to focus your senses on the feeling of the water all around your body.
You felt a disturbance in the water near you, like someone was next to you. When you opened your eyes, you realised you were face to face with a baby ilu staring at you with curiosity.
Looking around, you saw great amounts of colourful fish and coral, meaning you were in the part within the reef that na’vi rarely came to, the one with the great sea mountain.
The reason it was near empty was because it was forbidden to prevent hunting around that area, an order issued by your great-great grandmother who was once olo’eyktan.
And you knew nobody in their right mind would swim down this deep without the purpose of hunting; most would only swim near the surface if they chose to come here. This is it, you thought to yourself as you smiled at the ilu, it swimming circles around you in response, examining your features.
While looking at the sand below you admiring the seashells shining in the light, you saw a large dark blue boulder heavily covered in seaweed. On the top of it, you noticed a bright purple fish struggling to get free, some of the seaweed tangled around its fins, preventing it from escaping.
You swam down, concerned for the helpless creature. You carefully unwrapped the seaweed from around its tail, then its dorsal fin. With that, the fish was free, and it spared no time swimming away from you. But not to the ocean with the rest of its friends, no. It swam behind the big rock, then disappeared.
Confused, you made your way to the other side, examining the seaweed all over it while wondering where the fish could have possibly gone.
Then you saw it; behind all the seaweed there was a small opening, like a tunnel of sorts. Lifting up the seaweed around it, you discovered that the tunnel was much bigger than you originally thought, enough to fit an adult male na’vi.
Peering into it, you almost gasped. You saw bioluminescent plants arranged in a beautiful pattern across the walls of the tunnel. They reminded you of old metkayinan patterns that used to be woven into the cloth your people would use for formal ceremonies, but alas that was a long time ago.
The art was long lost, except for the leftover worn down cloth that your father kept draped over your families’ marui, as a reminder of who our ancestors were. You always looked at the pattern before you went to sleep, the cloth dangling above your head and serving as yet another reminder of your responsibilities.
But now, you were able to admire it for its beauty. The patterns twisted into curls at the end, the lines mimicking the waves of the ocean. It was certainly old, you deduced, since some of the plants had grown, bleeding out into the grooves between the rocks of the tunnel.
Where did this tunnel come from? Who arranged the plants in this way? Did anyone know about this? These questions flooded your mind as you moved forward, swimming through the tunnel. It dipped deep below the sand, the only light you had to guide you were the plants on the wall, glowing purple and blue. Your hands pushed you forward as you placed them on both sides of the tunnel, propelling you forward.
It had been around 2 minutes of seemingly endless swimming when you finally saw a light in front of you. When you finally made it out of the tunnel, you were met with an astonishing sight.
A cave greeted you, with a huge air pocket that allowed you to poke your head out of the water. You removed the bond that attached you to the gill mantle, letting it go back through the tunnel and leaving you alone to marvel at this cave of wonders.
There were flat rocks shaped like stairs which you stepped on, and the walls of the cave were smoother than most, almost like they’d been carved into and perfected with a tool.
There were paintings and maps hung and scattered on the cave walls, adorned with colourful seashells on the corners. In the corner, lay a delicate carving into the rock of a mighty tulkun with its tattoos in all of its glory, a small calf following it.
Algae you’d never seen before were growing on the rocks underneath your feet and on the ceiling, hanging down like what you heard the flora that grew on the Vitraya Ramunong (Tree of Souls) would look like.
On the smooth rock floor in front of you there was a large hammock hooked up with woven cloth, and as you stepped closer to it, you noticed something.
Grazing your fingertips on the edges of the hammock, you observed the same metkayinan pattern that decorated the tunnel woven here. You inspected the maps that were on the walls; maps of Awa’atlu and the other islands surrounding it. Beautiful paintings of tulkun and other sea creatures, the pigment extracted from the colourful plant life in the reef, more vibrant than any other paintings you had seen before.
Your eyes were simply open in shock and in awe of all the beauty. Perhaps Eywa had shown you this cave for a reason. Perhaps she had seen that you needed a place to escape to and gifted you the honour of finding this place.
That night when you went home, you watched the area, wondering if anyone would sneak out to go in the direction of the reef to go to the cave. But nobody ever did. And everytime you went back, it was always exactly how you’d left it.
For the next 2 years, you had escaped to that cave every time you felt overwhelmed, even staying for a nap in the hammock a few times. No one had ever questioned where you went, always assuming you were out helping others.
Sometimes you returned with fish you hunted from the other reefs just to steer clear of suspicions. Of course, you never stayed in there for too long, only going in between duties for a break to avoid more being piled onto you.
It was your sanctuary.
“Tsireya! Where are you going?” you asked your little sister, catching up to her as she walked along the beach which was teeming with your people. Kids were playing, adults were preparing to go hunting, and the elderly were weaving baskets and garments to wear. For the metkayina, this was the usual.
She recognized the sound of your voice, turning around with a smile. “Y/n! I was just about to go feed the ilu. Want to come with me?” she said, looking at you hopefully. Your relationship with your sister was not as close as the bond you shared with your brother, of course, but you still cherished her for she was in your eyes, adorable.
You smiled back, agreeing. She waved her hand as a signal for you to follow her. “So..” you glanced at Tsireya. As you both walked together you asked her, “Have you been considering anyone lately, sister?” A cheeky grin appeared on your face as her cheeks turned slightly purple.
She pursed her lips, using her right hand to tuck her hair behind her ear. “Well, no…not really. None of the boys interest me.” You raised your not-eyebrows in slight surprise. None of them? “And of the girls?” you inquired, folding your arms while slightly speeding up to get a better look at her face. “None.” she responded, avoiding your gaze nervously.
The wind from the sea blew against her face as she stepped into the water, you still looking at her in slight shock. Out of all the people, none of them had interested her? You were absolutely sure she was interested in one of the boys, Lälo, who had always made her laugh and always gave her gifts to show his interest.
“They’re nice, of course. But… I just don’t feel a spark with them.” she said, lowering her head and her ears pointed down, as if she expected you to be upset.
Your whole family thought she would accept Lälo’s courtship, always looking fondly upon them whenever he invited her for a walk. Your face morphed from one of shock into sympathy, reaching out a hand to put on her shoulder.
“There’s no rush sister, you don’t need to be ashamed of anything. Love is something that’s unpredictable, and one day Eywa will bless you in finding your future mate. You don’t need to worry about that now.” you reassured her, and she gave you a smile that almost melted your heart. “Irayo, y/n.”
You both waded through the water to the ilu’s feeding area, signing a quick I see you to the ilu keeper. When you were feeding one of the babies, Tsireya suddenly questioned, “And you?”. You turned your head in confusion, but she continued feeding the mother ilu. “What?”
“Do you have anyone you’re interested in?” her smile turned into the same grin you had on your face earlier. Before you could respond, a horn sounded.
Multiple shadows were cast on you both, and disappeared as soon as they came. Looking up, you saw multiple mountain banshees flying down towards a blank spot near the marui, the horn continuing to sound. This was certainly not a normal occurrence.
You shared a look with your sister, and you both rode your ilu to the spot they landed, diving into the water first before resurfacing and brushing some of your wet hair out of your face while walking onto dry land. When you got there, whole bunches of your people had already surrounded the omaticayans, including your brother and his friend Rotxo.
“It’s too small, how are they supposed to swim?” Rotxo said, pointing at their tails while Ao’nung laughed. Tsireya was quick to silence them, “Do not, Rotxo and Ao’nung!” she scolded them, as you walked next to her and watched the omaticayans who were still raising their hands to show they meant no harm.
She sighed, then turned her gaze to one of the younger male forest people who had two braids dangling in front of his face, shooting her a simple “Hey.” She smiled and looked down, and you tried to contain your laughter by covering your mouth as you recognized the look he gave your sister, failing to notice someone else also giving you a similar look.
All of a sudden, the sound of skimwings splashing the water as they moved could be heard. Both metkayina and omaticaya turned their heads to witness your father flying over the crowd and landing back in the water on the opposite side.
You whispered to Tsireya, “Does he always have to be so dramatic?”, and she put a hand in front of her mouth to keep her from laughing.
As your father and the omaticayans exchanged greetings, your mother approached, a confused look in her eye. “Why do you come to us, Jake Sully?” your father asked.
You slightly gasped at the mention of his name, recognizing the tallest males' non-na’vi features. He had strange hairs over his eyes and an extra finger and toe, which you recognized on two of the other children.
Jake Sully, who was once part of the Sky People and known throughout Pandora as the newest Toruk Makto, was here in Awa’atlu? You couldn’t believe your eyes. Was this his family?
“We seek uturu”, he said bravely, outstretching his arms. You heard murmurs spread throughout the crowd. Uturu? Jake Sully? Toruk Makto? were the words you heard repeated the most. Why would they need to seek uturu in the home of a stranger?, you yourself wondered, tilting your head in confusion.
“Uturu?” your mother repeated, to confirm she was hearing correctly. “A sanctuary for my family.” Jake Sully said in affirmation. Your parents shared a glance before your mother stalked towards them, inspecting their features.
“We are reef people, you are forest people, your skills will mean nothing here.” your father said. “So we will learn your ways,” Jake Sully responded, before looking at who you could only assume was his mate, Neytiri. You have heard of her amazing skills in the war between the omaticaya and the sky people, and your eyes shimmered with adoration when you looked at her.
“Right?” he asked his mate, before your mother took her tail between her hands without saying anything. You groaned internally. She never did have a sense of personal space, especially after she became the official Tsahìk after your grandmother died (may she rest in the Great Mother’s arms.)
She grabbed the youngest one’s arm, and said “Their arms are thin.”, the little girl pouting and retreating to the safe embrace of her mother after yours let her arm go.
“Their tails,” she added, grabbing the tail of another girl with a uniquely shaped nose, almost like that of the Sky People, as she exclaimed in slight agitation and slapped your mothers hand away, “are weak,” she frowned. “You will be slow in the water.”
You looked at the girl again. She had a woven shawl around her neck, probably shielding her from being too cold on the ride here. Your mother grabbed her hands one by one, showing them to the clan.
“These children-" she paused, her eyes widening, "are not even true Na’vi!”, she announced, your people gasping in shock. “Yes we are!” she said back to her, and you felt a slight twinge of guiltiness in your heart for your mothers behaviour, even though it was not yours to control.
She walked to the boy that Tsireya was looking at before and grabbed his hand, also raising it up for your people to see.
“They have demon blood!” she announced again, the boy’s head hanging low, only being able to look down at the sand below him as gasps mixed with shock and outrage again rose from the metkayina that surrounded you all. Another boy who you assumed was his brother, looked at her in slight annoyance.
You did not blame him, for your mother had clearly overstepped her boundaries this day. You glanced towards your sister, her face twisted into one of guilt and sympathy, and you guessed she was feeling a similar sentiment.
You put your left hand on her shoulder, whispering, “It’s alright. I will talk to mother about this later.” you tried to muster a smile but you could not, looking at the little omaticayan girl that was absolutely crestfallen, hugging her sister’s leg.
You couldn’t bring yourself to look at them anymore, even as Neytiri started to talk in defence of her mate. You turned your gaze to your brother, who despite whispering something into Rotxo’s ear, was still being stupidly loud enough that you could hear.
“My mother is right, Rotxo. They will be useless here. Just look at how ridiculous that one’s hand looks!” he snickered. You felt anger boil up in your body as you walked over to him, still bent down and whispering.
You grabbed him by the ear, pulling him through and away from the crowd, unaware of a certain pair of yellow eyes fixed on you both.
“Ao’nung! How could you say such foul things about them like that! You as the son of the olo’eyktan have to be responsible! Not ill-mannered like a child!” you scolded him, still pulling on his ear as he hissed in pain.
“Okay, okay I’m sorry!” he apologised in a panic, trying to slap your hand away.
“Do not let me catch you doing it again, skxawng! At least do not be so loud that they can hear you!” you hissed as you slapped the back of his head, him looking away from you with agitation once he was free from your vice-like grip.
The nerve of your skxawng of a brother sometimes. You rolled your eyes, walking back to your original position next to your sister.
You saw the youngest hugging her father, whispering “Do we have to go?” as he reassured her “Shh, we’ll be okay.” Your ears drooped at the sight, once again sad for the family. You looked towards your parents who were looking at each other in silent conversation. Perhaps you could nudge them in the right direction.
Taking a deep breath, you stepped towards your parents, suddenly aware of all eyes on you. “Mother, father, may I speak?” you said with a hushed tone. Your father simply nodded.
“Alright I–”
“If you must speak, you will speak in front of our people.” your mother said, staring into your eyes.
Your lips parted in shock. You? Speak in front of all your people? In defence of strangers?
“Darling, I don’t believe that’s necessary.” your father tried to cut in after seeing the colour drain from your face at the thought of publicly speaking. Ronal sighed and ignored her husband, placing a hand on your shoulder.
“Not for me,” she shook her head, “For your people.”
Your ears perked up when she said those words.
“They are scared, ma y/n.” she breathed out, her voice trembled so little that nobody would ever notice. But you weren’t nobody, you were her oldest child.
You could see in her eyes and hear in her voice that she was distressed at their sudden arrival. Her best friend in the Ta’unui clan was murdered a long time ago trying to protect the tulkun from the Sky people before Payakan’s murders, and she had to pay the price for it with her tears.
Not them, but her.
"If you truly believe in that family, then you will show it to the people.” she said, eyes scanning the crowd to which you followed.
The children were hiding behind a few elders who were trying to calm them down. The thought of demon blood being in front of them of course terrified them, they did not know any better. Some of the metkayina had their teeth bared, fangs showing in clear aggression and disapproval, still gripping onto their spears.
The metkayina despised the Sky People ever since they set foot on Pandora, when they hunted the tulkun and left their bodies scattered at the bottom of the ocean. They ruined the spiritual bonds that intertwined the lives of your people and the tulkun, and they did it without remorse.
You looked at a group of younger metkayina who looked terrified, ears pointing down and scared, and you recognized the face of a crouched down elder who had his spirit brother murdered by the sky people long ago, struggling to hold in his tears as he whispered “Mawey, mawey, my child.” as he hugged a little girl who buried her face into his shoulder. His grandchild.
“Show them.” your mother repeated, squeezing your shoulder in reassurance. You took a deep breath, and whispered, “May the Great Mother give me strength.” before slowly stepping towards Jake Sully and his family.
“Jake Sully. Neytiri.” you said, bowing your head and signing I see you, to which they returned with slight confusion. You turned around, facing your people.
“My people, you have all heard of the things that Jake Sully had done during the fight with the omaticaya and the sky people. You all heard how their hometree had fallen and they had fled to the Tree of Souls.” you began, not noticing the slightly pained expression of Neytiri as you mentioned the hometree.
“You also remember how these brave warriors,” you gestured towards the omaticayan adults behind you, “had saved the forest from being destroyed by the sky people.”
“Jake Sully may have been of the sky people but he had seen the beauty that the Great Mother blessed Pandora with and he fell in love with it. As we all would if we were in his place.” You paused, taking a breath.
“He’s not the same as those who have hurt the tulkun, I’m sure of that. He is not different from you and I. So do not be scared. And do not be angered.” you continued, and took a deep breath after. The crowd murmured, and the children stopped crying to listen to your words.
“This family has been nothing but respectful towards all of us since they have set foot in Awa’atlu, so I expect you all to return this favour. Else your stares of disapproval will burn into their memory.” you said, and noticing the group of hunters loosening their holds on their spears.
“My people, we know better than to judge others based on their physical differences. So I implore you all to keep an open mind. They mean no harm to us. That is all I have to say.” you finished, bowing your head down to your parents before stepping beside Tsireya once more.
“That was great, y/n!” she whispered excitedly, bending slightly to the right to look into your eyes, hers glimmering with adoration for her older sibling.
“You really think so?” you grinned back, still a bit flustered from having to speak in front of everyone.
“I know so. Take a look.” she reassured you, subtly gesturing towards the metkayina that had been showing aggression towards the Sullys, now seeming to calm down, looking at the sand in slight embarrassment of their previous actions.
You looked at the children who seemed to be wiping their tears and now were asking their elders about the feats of Jake Sully, then to the once scared group of metkayina who also calmed down, and your heart swelled.
You looked to the Sully family, or more precisely, into the eyes of one. He smiled at you, to which you returned graciously. Now that you were able to look at him, he was quite cute.
He was not taller than your brother but his posture was perfect, making him stand tall and proud. Every strand of his hair was pulled into delicate braids, sort of different from the ones metkayina used in their hair, and some colourful beads decorated one of the braids near his ear. Your sister had not failed to notice your gawking.
She playfully hit your left arm, still looking forward and paying attention to her father speaking with a straight face as if her arm was acting on its own, but you know that deep down inside she was ready to unleash her relentless teasing about the boy later.
After your father had announced that the Sully family would be staying here, your sister excitedly went to show them to their new marui, hopping on the nets that connected them all. Since your skxawng of a brother had no intention of helping them, you had to drag him to follow the omaticayans, Rotxo coming along as well.
You looked at the older sister, who begrudgingly introduced herself as Kiri earlier, at the back of all her family members lagging behind. You turned, glaring at your brother. “Keep following. Do not try to escape this.” you warned him, to which he grumbled something you couldn’t hear but still nodded.
You then sped up your hopping, and Kiri turned to look at you as you matched her pace. “Hey.” you said.
“...hey.” she returned, avoiding your gaze.
“I’m sorry.” you said, putting your hands behind your back. She looked at you confused. “For what?”
“For my mom earlier. What she said back there wasn’t nice. At all. I’m sorry you and your siblings had to go through that.” you responded, turning your gaze downwards in shame. “Thanks. But it’s not like you’re in control of your mom…” she looked at me, her voice trailing off.
I realised I had never introduced myself to the family, being off helping some children when the initial introductions were being made. “Y/n.” you smiled. “Cool. ” she gave a small smile back. As you tried to explain more about the metkayina and our culture to her, she couldn’t help but focus on trying to keep her snickering to a minimum.
She had seen Neteyam’s ears flick in your direction as soon as you said your name, and she knew he was listening to your rambling intently.
He was doing that thing where he nodded subconsciously while learning information from someone. “Kiri? Kiriiii?” you asked, waving your hand in her face. “Oh sorry! I got lost in thought.” she apologised.
“No problem. Do you want me to repeat that for you?” you smiled, completely unaware of the boy in front of you both who had now turned his full attention towards you, taking in your smile. “Yeah, if you wouldn’t mind.” she said, grinning.
Lo’ak laughed in front of you both, and you looked at him with confusion. He said something in a language you didn’t understand, which earned a “Haha!” from Kiri and a push forward from Neteyam, muttering “Skxawng.” under his breath.
“Mind telling me what that was about?” you turned to Kiri. She shrugged while hiding a chuckle behind her hand, “Oh don't worry about it, just Lo’ak joking around, as usual.”

Thank you so much for reading to the end! I’m sorry that there actually wasn’t that much Neteyam in this part but I promise he’ll show up more in the next part 🥲 I didn’t want to post too long of a part (else this would’ve been 10k words instead of 5k) or have to wait longer to post this.
