It seems like an odd omission that, afaik, In Stars and Time never gives a canonical reason why Mirabelle can't just walk through the floating tears. Apparently there's a random chance for Siffrin to almost forget to stop Isabeau from running into the tears, and if so, he has an internal monologue about how the tears don't seem to work the same way as the normal combat "stop time" power (thank you ISAT dialogue project). So there is canonical support that the tears are something special. Which makes sense; if I understand correctly, the Head Housemaiden should have also had/could have granted herself the ability to resist time stop, but the King was able to overpower and freeze her in direct combat. So it's arguably strongly implied in the game itself that the tears are especially powerful and that king-related attacks can overpower Mirabelle's resistance, even if it's never outright stated. (I know the King incapacitates/"petrifies" the party including Mirabelle at some points, but as of early Act 3 I'm not sure of the exact nature of that attack. It doesn't sound like how the characters experience tear-related or combat-related time stop.)

But it also makes sense in character that no one in the party thinks to try it. If they hit a dead end in the House by using a crest in the wrong place, and stuck around long enough to be sure it was a dead end and start to get scared, I think Mirabelle would insist on trying to get past the tears. And I think eventually the other party members would have reluctantly let her try on "if we don't do anything, she's dead anyway" logic. But we can assume Siffrin loops back before it reaches that point.

Anyway that leads me to imagine someone in the party having a similar train of thought sometime post-canon and delicately asking Siffrin if he knows if Mirabelle could resist the tears. and he's just like "??? of course we never tried that? what if it killed her???" everyone is at at least their fifth "screaming internally while trying not to visibly get upset with their traumatized friend" moment of the week.

random thoughts i have while playing isat pt. 7

opened the game and immediately went "im gonna make odile question my sanity!!!" but of course when i enter the house Siffrin decides to turn the scripted tutorial enemy into bean paste and ruins the run--

anyways. this panel will haunt me

i. i dont even know how but. I beat the king without him ever getting a chance to make his first attack. i just kept spamming slow and two jackpots later he was dead. i didn't even knoiw that was possible.

after a bit of fucking around i decided that i was gonna move on to act 5 and promptly burst into tears

update: i accidentally posted this too early dont look at me

i haven't talked about it before but. a while ago i made a concept for a game based off the backrooms and omori, and odile talking about someone who is forgotten may not exist is the basis for the entire game's plot, it makes me want to go back and flesh it out a bit more!!!

i am deadset on the idea of making an edit with mirabelle's reflection craft but it's an uno reverse card

i am. such a fucking sucker for sickfics. i cannot get enough of them. act 5 has enough sickfic tropes to make a million spinoff fics on its own, it brings me life and i love it dearly

odile attacking siffrin. hurts so, so so badly on an emotional level for me. Because like??? i get it. i get it and it sucks and she obviously doesn't want to, but she's scared. But siffrin is even more scared in that moment, and the immediate association of that pain with being hated by odile hurts me so much.

i will continue playing to get some of the different loop endings and i totally plan on doing two hats in the future!!! so im not quite done with this game yet i just got impatient in act 4 and i needed the Emotional Catharsis of Act 5

okay so its going to be impossible for me to write a full post about isat until after my 2nd playthrough and i have a bunch of notes, but i WILL be insane about how the senses are depicted, especially things siffrin smells, tastes and sees.

(spoilers for the whole game but when i get to act 4/5 ill put it under a cut)

because it starts off normal. everything that's experienced for the first couple of loops is alright, and that's because siffrin's mental state is still mostly the same as when they went into the house for the first time with the squad.

until the text starts commenting on little things, like how the cookies are getting old to the malanga fritters not being exactly the same as how sif is trying to remember, to how whenever they get to the end and talk to the head housemaiden how they smell burnt sugar just before looping back to the start.

the most jarring is the sight. slowly, throughout all the loops you start seeing an image of siffrin standing somewhere, such as in a hallway, before vanishing, and it gets a bit more common the more loops you've been through. it becomes more obvious the more things taste less like anything (and the more the game comments on how siffrin's stomach feels) and how easy it is to miss something new someone says (because you and siffrin are speeding through everything you hear), how quickly his mental state is declining.

(now spoilers for acts 4 and 5 because thats when it gets Real)

during act 4 it's possible (for some ungodly reason), when talking to bonnie at least for the first time in a loop, for the music to cut off and their sprite suddenly be half covered in black. because. why not. (this happened the second time in act 4 i talked to bonnie in dormont and i jumped badly)

the most probable explanation for seeing this is because of how the last moments in act 3 are of bonnie literally being crushed by the king's hand. probably siffrin remembering what happened and it starting to overlay in his vision.

it's probably also why you see other sifs throughout the castle, especially the further along you go. either he's seeing vestiges of past loops, or hallucinating. probably both. their mental state is getting more and more worse.

act 5 shows this even more, with blacked out sprites of the other characters and visions of them in places such as the break rooms, or getting their dialogue when interacting with objects despite siffrin being completely alone in their rampage throughout the castle. most notable is the mirror room dialogue.

how the initial picture you see during act 5 is with the whole family, until you view it and siffrin is completely alone. how the memories of the past loops are overlaying with the current one to the point where his senses are starting to become more unreliable.

during act 5 as well if you interact with any candles they smell sweet. before siffrin either didnt smell anything or it was something he didnt really know.

anyway. siffrin's own senses becoming unreliable reflecting his own deteriorating mental state is a brilliant touch to add to the horror in the story. (even without talking about how his relationship with touch is).

postgame our man absolutely would not be able to trust his sense with how the past looping affected his perception of everything around them.

In Stars and Time: a thought

So! You played and finished In Stars and Time, one of the games I love very much, and also know about the secret epilogue stuff. Wow! Here's just some of my thoughts for you!

Now, normally I don't do this sort of thing, but hey, there's always a first! People may also have already thought about and talked about this, but I just wanted to put down my thoughts anyway. I may have missed some details or forgotten some! This is all speculation stuff yadda yadda.

So, Loop. Loop-de-loopity loopdoop. Super spoilery stuff, but hey, you know the secret epilogue stuff already. So you know that they used to be a Siffrin, and you know of the two wishes they made: the wish that caused their time loops, and the wish that 'got them out of there'. The Timeloop Wish, and the GTFO Wish.

The GTFO Wish is what brought Loop to the ISAT timeline in the first place, but they are a Siffrin themselves, so they also have the Timeloop Wish. We see them use timeloops to prevent losing to Siffrin during their fight.

I simply find the workings of these wishes to be quite interesting. What we know about Wish Craft from the game seems to point to one fact: Every wish accepted, is granted. No failed wishes. Wishes that might be able to be combined, may be combined, wishes that might have conflicts may work around each other.

Let's look at the wishes we know of:

Siffrin's wish, which was to stay with their friends, and Vaugarde's wish, which was for Vaugarde to be saved from the King. This essentially was combined into one wish that caused Siffrin to loop in time until the country was saved, and that Siffrin would afterwards be able to stay with their friends.

The King's wish was never directly told, but it seems to be implied that it was granted in the final few moments before he was frozen. No breaking, no nothing, his wish seemed to be sufficiently granted. Which is interesting. Was the King's wish, which is what gave him power, lined up in a way so that it would not conflict with Siffrin's and Vaugarde's wish later on? Was the King's wish specifically playing into the eventual granting of those wishes? Did the later wishes just luck out, and the outcome of the King's wish was simply redirected even if it were to still be granted truthfully? The King's wish isn't concretely known, and nothing completely confirms that his wish was granted, but this to me seems to be how it played out.

It also seems implied that the reason that nobody can remember the entire home country that Siffrin and the King used to reside in, was because of some Wish with the effect of blanketing the entire country in non-existence. It's likely that it wasn't the direct request of a wish, but more of the method that the Wish used to grant the wish, similarly to how Siffrin was given the power to loop time to defeat the King & bond with their family, and how the King was given immense power to accomplish his own wish. One extra thing seems to be that the harder one attempts to break the wish, the stronger the wish has to react. Out of one's mind, the wish has no effect. On one's mind, and it'll give them a headache. An attempt to say the country's name? Deadly.

Loop has two wishes active. The wish to stay with their friends, and the wish to GTFO. What's interesting is that these wishes might have to play around each other. Loop wished to "get out of here", in an attempt to break free from their situation. But, it could not happen in a way the blocks their first wish - to stay with their friends. And of course, Loop can't simply loop back to before they got the hell out, because then that of course betrays the GTFO wish, and I would imagine that an attempt to do that would play out similarly to trying to say "the country's name", given that its a direct attempt to break the wish.

The result is that Loop was placed in an alternate timeline, with another Siffrin encountering their own time loops. This works! They've been released from the torment of their own time loops, while still being available to stay with their friends, clearly not being actually blocked from doing so as seen in Act 5. Which brings me to one more thought.

I believe Loop's wish to stay with their friends is still in progress. It's not been finished granting. Being thrown into a timeline is simply part of it, and further down the line, Loop may be given the chance to open up to the ISAT timeline version of their friends and form connections. And to stay with them.

What I'm saying is, there is a very real chance that Loop might join the New Journey, alongside Siffrin, Mira, Isa, Odile, Bonnie, and Nille. Like an even bigger family.

And darn I think that's just swell.

8- any post-game things you’d like to see?

Everyone's been doing an excellent job with post game siffrin traveling and dealing with being open. Post game loop, though? Give me loop and a new crew and struggling to adapt.

Or. Maybe way in the future, how they manage to plan staying in each other's lives even when not constantly traveling together. Keeping in touch!! More of that! I wrote that odile thing and went aw yeah just scratching the surface.

11- any character headcanons?

Ever just have that moment where ur headcanons are so solidly in ur head you just forget? Anyway, hmm...

siffrin - the scar beneath their eyepatch is messy, although healed, it's rough. Isabeau, after being told its okay to touch, helps care for it so in the future its actually recovering better. Maybe they get it Changed to the star shape somehow

isabeau - freckles AND burns in summer. His most prominent, more permanent freckles are on his shoulders (usually covered up by his outfits so not burned, so he just has freckles there normally). Siffrin only got to see the tail end of isabeau's freckle summer during the journey. Sad!

Also he burns very obviously lol

mirabelle - has a signed copy of cursing of chateau castle from the author from a letter she sent once. This is separate from the one stolen, I think. She also has one signed by euphrasie, and that one is treasured for a sentimental reason. She only could bring one with her on the journey.

odile - she's wanted in a certain city for ka buan crimes that are not related to body craft. She doesn't say anything about it because she thinks it's funny. Also, her gems on her glasses... one is from her father, and the other was just to match. She makes up answers for that one if people ask.

bonnie - they have some problems adjusting back to school again. They feel even dumber for not getting some things than before because of the new expectations and they just feel the same except now they have an issue with people sticking up for them because nille and siffrin...

Also they grow up and use neos. I think wolf pronouns are up there.
