            History of Peridot

 Peridot is yellowish-green in color. The word "Peridot" comes from the Arabic word "Faridat," meaning gem.  It appeared in priests’ jewelry as early as the second century BCE and later in the chalices and churches of medieval Europe. The peridot birthstone has also been used for centuries as a protective talisman, shielding the owner from evil spirits and “terrors of the night.”

 Where is Peridot Found? Although the peridot seen in jewelry today comes from sources such as China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, and the United States, some journeyed to Earth on meteorites while others are found in exotic locales like Peridot Beach, Hawaii, where the sands shimmer a luminous green. Myanmar (formerly Burma) is another important source of the peridot birthstone

   Color

Peridot’s color ranges from pure green to yellowish green to greenish yellow. The finest color of peridot is green without any hint of yellow or brown color. The gem’s colors tend to be at their finest in stones weighing 10 carats and above. Lower-quality peridot is brownish

Carat This bright and lively gemstone is affordable in small sizes, but its value increases significantly if it’s over 10 carats. High-quality peridots over 50 carats are rare but can be found. The biggest cut peridot, which weighs 319 carats, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Clarity Most good-quality peridots are free of visible flaws. Some peridots have reflective, disk-like spots called "lily pads." Clear peridots are common, so you should avoid those that look blurry or cloudy.
