“Luz, who the fuck’s the rugrat?” Joe asked, voice gravely with a mildly annoyed expression on his face as his dark eyes gave Walt a once over.

“Joe,” Luz started with a dramatic sigh as he crossed the distance between them and placed a firm hand on the other man’s shoulder. “I’m sorry I’ve been hiding this from you all this time but- this is our son.”

Joe’s stoney expression didn’t break, if anything Walt was sure he could feel the irritation begin to radiate off of the man.

“You know what? You’re the reason why I drink, Luz” Joe responded flatly before he easily slapped Luz’s wrist.

“Aww, don’t be like that, Joe,” Luz pouted.

“I don’t know why I keep you around,” he grumbled as he pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and extracted one.

“Sure you do! Who else would provide you such a deal on scrap parts and cheap weed?” Luz asked confidently as he easily wrapped an arm around the man’s broad shoulders before he sent the man a comical wink and added, “Not to mention all the other services I provide.”

Walt wasn’t an idiot, just a little surprised that somehow he had located yet another fruity man that called Matilda home. It had been pretty obvious to him on the drive up that Luz’s “guy” was definitely more than just an acquaintance- he had been much too excited for someone who was making a run into the city to make a little side money -but between the way that Joe’s shoulders tensed and the light pink coloring that spread uncontrollably across his cheekbones, it was all the confirmation in the world he needed.

“What’s the good of offering services when you brought a fucking rugrat along, huh?” Joe grumbled quietly.

“Hey, I am all too happy to make myself scarce for an hour or two,” Walt offered as he took a suggestive step backwards, giddy at the idea of possible freedom in the big city for the afternoon. “I’m sure I can find something to keep myself occupied here.”

“Perfect,” Joe agreed.

“No,” Luz said pointedly a millisecond later, looking annoyed as he removed his arm from the man’s shoulders with seemingly great effort. “I explicitly expressed to your uncle that I would keep you by my side at all times.”

“What kinda paranoid hardass is your uncle that you’re not allowed to walk around the city on your own? What are you? Fifteen? Sixteen?”

“I’m seventeen.” Walt corrected with a frown.

“Whatever. Old enough to be out on your own. Hell knows I was when I was much younger than seventeen.”

“Yes and look at the model citizen you turned out to be,” Luz countered before he signed. “I’m sorry, no can do, Joe. Walt’s here as part of his community service hours he’s gotta complete after getting caught being a dumbass. No fun today for any of us.”

“He needs community service? Fuck let’s drop him by Bill’s place and let him babysit his spawn for the afternoon,” Joe suggested. “I’m sure Frannie could use a break.”

“Did you not hear me say this kid already has a record?” Luz asked, annoyed. “We’re trying to set him straight, not drop him in the lap of the devil. We don’t need Bill Guarnere rubbing off on an impressionable young delinquent!”

“Fuck, I guess you gotta point,” Joe conceded through a puff of cigarette smoke.

the older i get and the closer i am to reaching 30, the more the people around me try to deny me my age. it’s a constant ‘oh you’re just turning 29 again teehee 🤭’ or ‘dont tell your SO that, he’ll leave you for a younger model 😉’ and i just???? hate it?????????

i spent my entire teenaged years fighting for my life. i crawled through the deepest pits of my depression to cling to the promise of a life beyond that pain. i was so convinced that i was going to die young, that i would never see the grace of my age starting with a 2, let alone 3.

so im going to turn 30, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me from loving it.
