Lucy Heartfilia bears a stunning resemblance to her mother. This fact has colored much of her identity and life.

At first she was just a mirror of a woman still living... Free to be herself.

I think Lucy was a tomboy before her mother died. I think she scraped her knees all the time, I think she wore shorts or breeches and t-shirts all the time and climbed trees. I think she mouthed off and couldn't help doing 5 different cannon balls into the pool until she got it right. I think she wouldn't be caught dead in a skirt because it snagged on the bark too much and she couldn't ride her horse if she wasn't wearing pants.

And then... One day... that little tomboy kid was crushed, the seed of butchness stomped out, she was made to be a replacement for her mother.

She lived in dresses and skirts, taught how to sit like a lady, taught the proper posture, taught that proper girls don't get dusty in the stables, don't play in the mud, don't throw tantrums when their father doesn't play with them.

She lived the life of a noble girl turned woman, and then she ran. She tried to become her own self.

But the remnants of being Layla remained, even as she fully resolved to never return home she couldn't stop... Not when she felt like the only way to be a good celestial wizard was to be a reflection of her mother. She never stopped feeling guilty that she wasn't her mother when it came to Aquarius.

Out in the world she uses that feminity she has learned like a tool. It's not something she is comfortable in it's something she is using to survive, to haggle men out of high prices, something that makes her that much more like her idols. It's an ill-fitting hand me down dress.

And one of her idols is Mirajane Strauss, model for Sorcerer Weekly, barmaid, softest smile in all of Fiore. A feminine icon. Maybe if she can be like Mira... Maybe she'll be good enough.

But here's the grand secret: Mira's feminity is a mask

So where does that leave Lucy?

At times Lucy catches sight of this sort of dance that Erza and Mira do. They perform the roles of a butch and her femme. Mira prepares the food, shares gossip, and flashes a pretty smile. Erza pulls out the chair, carries whatever's heaviest, and gives Mira a kiss. It's a show of sorts.

And then, at another point in time, she catches sight of Mira, who is sitting on the steps behind Fairy Hills. In those quiet moments, without the makeup that hides her eye bags, without the cute dress, without the smile... smoking a cigarette and sharing a late night beer with Erza... And the two look so alike that for a moment she cannot recognize Mirajane Strauss. For this small moment she really catches sight of the She-Devil, not just the rage that triggers her monstrous transformation, but the person she was before that grief, and who she really is after that grief.

She realizes what lies underneath Mira's facade. She sees that little butch kid in Mira get some air, get to breathe for that slim fragment of time and she understands. Sees the way Mira's posture changes, her attitude changes, her dynamic with Erza changes. And most of all the way that she looks truly and genuinely unguarded.

And Lucy realizes... That maybe she's just like Mira... Her true self is buried under 6ft of dirt... And that maybe she's suffocating herself alive

The older adult form of Princess Shokora is referred to as her “true” form, while the young princess form is the one most commonly used to depict her. Her adult form is notably more butch, with short hair, pants, and a cape, while her young princess form is a more traditional princess look.

I’ve decided to interpret this as perhaps a form of lgbtq+ censorship probably by the ones who discovered her kingdom. Since she and her kingdom have been gone for a long time, there is probably not much known about her. Perhaps she was sapphic and butch, but that was hidden by the historians who discovered her kingdom by only depicting her when she was younger and fit into a more stereotypically feminine role. Perhaps very few people even know that she survived into adulthood at all…

Question for ya about genderbent mac and gender/sexuality performance. Assuming she would have a similar repression then coming out experience, would you change her appearance/presentation? I feel like in recent seasons mac's changed so much so I'm curious how you'd represent that in your art!

okay so! @bitseventimes made some really good points in this post about this idea already so i’m kinda piggybacking.

short answer: not really? i’d keep her presentation pretty in line with canon mac so she’d be rockin the tommy bahamas shirts the same seasons as him. i think my version of fem mac would have always been sorta masc except for the few occasions she’s had to put on a dress. but she’d complain about it the whole time. I think her evolving relationship with gender expression and sexuality over the seasons would be less visual and more internal/behavioral.

long answer: unfortunately i don’t think it’s really possible to do a perfect 1 to 1 genderswap parallel that carries ALL the nuances of a character’s relationship queerness/gender expression while still keeping that character recognizable. so it’s okay to bend the rules a little. my headcanon is that fem mac was always a tomboy but saw femininity as a shitty obligation you have to deal with once in a while for show, similar to canon mac’s relationship with having sex with women. i think i saw someone hc that fem mac would wear dresses to church to be closer to god and like yeah. that’s exactly it. overall her demeanor and interests and style would stay pretty close to canon mac. i think early seasons mac would feel ashamed for not being as put together as other girls and especially denise who always has perfect hair and perfect makeup and mac can’t even put eyeliner on without almost blinding herself. and that combined with repressed lesbianism would manifest into this misogynistic pick me “i’m not like other girls” mentality. she’d still have just as much cognitive dissonance as canon mac—convincing herself that dudes like natural girls better anyway but also of course denise has gotten laid so many times she always looks like a whore. and then that changes when mac comes to terms with being gay. (some of the misogyny is still there though this is it’s always sunny in philadelphia). anyways she starts fully embracing the butch thing with more confidence in the later seasons because turns out bitches really dig it. but if denise wants to do her make up every once in a while she sure won’t complain. if you really want to explore queer repression in relation to hyperfemininity it’s wayyy more interesting through denise’s character and it fits really well with whats already established in canon dennis. mac’s performance of femininity would exist as this external factor but denise’s performance of femininity would be so much more internalized and rooted in her self worth. mac takes her heels off 15 minutes into the party because she’s impulsive and it’s irritating and denise bears through the pain because if she can’t be beautiful then what is she whats the point? denise would belittle mac for not putting enough effort into her appearance but deep down she wants the strap so fucking bad would be sort of jealous of the freedom mac has with her appearance and she’d grow more and more resentful toward her in the later seasons after mac comes out.

OK a lot of my thoughts about them are very much half formed and just sort of floating around in my brain so i don't really know how to verbalise them (something i should have thought about before i posted lmao) but they are very much there. so.

cait (aka agent caitlin mega) is like if u took curt mega and put him in his ultimate nightmare situation. missions are way less dangerous and exciting and being a woman in the 50s means she can't dress how she wants (at the start of her career she's very butch but as the lavender scare approaches she changes her clothes and hair to draw less suspicion. she still wears pants whenever possible and cuts her hair as short as 50s standards will allow though) and she's underestimated by her peers despite the director of the a.s.s. also being a woman and generally improving views on female spies in 50s america. unlike canon curt her confidence, recklessness and physical strength don't get her much respect as a spy or as a woman in general. so that combined with the inherent loneliness of the job means that when she meets ollie carvour (who understands the experience of being not only a female spy but also a lesbian in the lavender scare) they immediately form a strong connection and it doesn't take long for both of them to start catching feelings. i think in general these guys would be a little more emotionally open with each other than i think canon curtwen would, considering for women there was less stigma around showing vulnerability. but they're still stubborn asses in a very competitive and ruthless profession so it's not too dissimilar.

ollie (aka agent olwen jane carvour) is not quite as different to canon but i wanna talk about her anyway just for funsies. historically britain's views on female spies were generally more conservative than the us so based on that olwen would have had to work harder to be taken seriously. however, she has an advantage over cait in that she fits 1950s standards for women (in espionage and in general) both in her general style and mannerisms and her manner of working - stealthy and methodical as opposed to cait's tendency to wing it and blow shit up. ollie uses people's impressions of her to her advantage, blending into social events seamlessly as a charming young debutante despite being downright murderous. this tires her to no end, and until she meets cait she feels like she has to entirely mask anything even slightly non-heteronormative about her to succeed in her job. then she meets this bold, reckless american agent who keeps her hair just a bit too short and never seems to wear skirts, and she suddenly feels seen.

dashi: i am a hardcore tweak/dashi shipper all the way, and while i think dashi is a very professional person (dog?), i think she’s also really good with people and knows how to use her skills to get what she wants. i think she totally worked in like customer service or something pre-octonauts and that she would charm her clients and customers almost instinctively. however, flirting for her, while common, is something she doesn’t really view as flirting flirting? like, it’s just something she does to steer the conversation in a more favorable direction. she very rarely actually means it, or genuinely tries to flirt, so that’s why she’s not where kwazii is. she was struggling with tweak though lol.

tweak: i think tweak is similar to dashi, she’s not naive and she certainly is good at flirting and probably did a lot of flirting and uh sleeping around in the past (who doesn’t love a butch lesbian mechanic), but i also think that she just. doesn’t really care. fhjffjjgdg like she likes having fun and stuff but generally outside of her video games and her inventions she does not give a shit about much lmao. not in like, a bad way or anything. she just never really saw the point of a social life yk? and the octonauts are an exception, that’s family it’s different. but she’s always had more important shit to do than playing social games.

(I realized I was going to also include sexuality for some of these characters, but since you mentioned trans specifically, I'll just cover that here. I can do one for LGBT+ headcanons in general too, maybe as a separate ask/post, if you want!)

Solace is a trans man, which is something I think most of the fandom here on Tumblr agrees on, lol

Mesh is a nonbinary man! In his case he defines it as a combo of nonbinary + trans man, and he's fine with he or they pronouns.

Shine is a trans woman and I will not let anyone take that away from me :P

Twoson and Fourside of DOT EXE (so the two ball and four ball members) are agender and nonbinary, respectively! Already mentioned in my big DOT EXE post, but might as well mention it here too. Also to reiterate from that post, the two of them falling under the nonbinary umbrella was the case even before they went full-cyber. I say that since some people might assume that them going full-cyber caused the nonbinary-ness, but that is not the case.

Charles (summer palette for the Franks) is a trans man, Flesh Prince did his top surgery!

Lyra (autumn palette for Eclipse, the one with blue hair) is a trans woman. The rest of Eclipse know and still love and accept her, especially since they ain't fuckin' TERFs. I have actually seen some people insist Eclipse would "totally" be TERFs, and I'm just like, nah nah nah, get out of here with that absolute garbage idea. >:U

Lastly there's Nunchaku, my Devil Theory OC for the summer palette for that crew. She's a butch lesbian! I never did specify whether she's cis or trans, and even though I might say she's "probably cis", at the same time I don't think she'd want to answer either way.

In the sense of, if you asked her about it and you're a stranger to her:

If she were trans, she wouldn't feel comfortable saying that to a stranger, and so she'd decline to answer.

If she were cis, she'd think it isn't a stranger's business to know either way, so she wouldn't answer out of spite.

The only certainty is that, if a friend or girlfriend asked her about it, she would say, "Dude, my gender is basically just 'butch lesbian' in and of itself. Not just woman, specifically butch lesbian as a gender." And then leave it at that!

So I guess depending on how you think/feel about it, Nunchaku might or might not count as trans. Definitely LGBT+ though. :P

Morris - Despite being an orphan, has the best relationship out of everyone with his adoptive parents. He has two moms and they're butch lesbian rockabilly peruvians. Nuff said.

Gisu - Fatherless behavior. She's being raised by her mom and grandparents who pretty much let her do whatever she wants out of some unspecified guilt they never seem to want to talk to her about. But they're chill enough and she really can't complain, though sometimes she feels like they're avoiding her on purpose..

Adam - Suprisingly? Not the worst out of the interns. Still not good. I've said this before, He's got a lot of siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, ect, ect. Big extended family, Mostly on the very successful and gifted side. And he's... neither of those. His biggest achievements are being Truman's intern and that time he reached the quarterfinals of the county debate tournament. He's surrounded by ivy bound prodigies and musical geniuses and he's just... some history buff. He fades into the background noise, and feels like he's failing his parents. His father in specific.

Sam - It started out fine, but then Dogen accidentally blew up a bullies head. Then she was left alone for hours at a time when they were going to hospitals and lawyers and wherever else. She spent most of her days in the companionship of animals, almost always got up whenever Dogen was hungry or sick or had a nightmare, just to feed him and make sure he was okay. They basically treated her like a third adult when she was like 10, venting to her and letting her do most of the chores in the house when they were away, and they never really left her with a babysitter because she's "so mature for her age". It's left her with a very dysfunctional view of relationships and uses the animals as a way to feel like she has some control over her life and that she isn't a servant, she can lead too.

Norma - Her and lizzie's mom is preeetty sucky and pretty much parades her around as a way to say "Look! I'm not a transphobe! I let my trans daughter wear dresses!" Despite being pretty transphobic in secret and how she passes laws. Her mom sees most things as an exchange, and her and Lizzie always used to fight for her love through academics, But Lizzie's pretty much given up on trying to appease her, so despite her powers being seen as "less rare", she's the preferred child now. Though, in the back of her head, she desperately wishes she had her sister's freedom. Should I add the two of them had a catholic upbringing? Big amount of guilt on her end but at the same time a sense of superiority and entitlement. Raz makes her feel threatened in her status as "#1 student" and she's very aggressive about it.

Lizzie - She's just given up on her relationship with her parents. No matter what they do, she isn't going to go back to constant competition and stress. She'd rather be a high school slacker who hangs out with "the wrong crowd" (poorer punk kids who prefer to dumpsterdive than buy their clothes) and actually have a social life than fighting for the spot of "perfect precious angel child" for the rest of her life. No matter how many punishments they give her or how much they scold her for wearing "rags". But it stil hurts that they've stopped setting a plate on the table for her because "you're never home anyways."

She kept fighting after that. I mean, really fighting. She never stopped getting attention from boys, and she was determined to stop being liked.

She got in so much trouble for it. Oftentimes more trouble than her male counterparts. Her teachers, her mother especially would tell her that she should be nicer. That the boys didn't mean anything by their behavior, that they just liked her and she wasn't being fair to them. Her mother would tell her to be gracious. She would tell her that she should think of herself as so lucky that so many boys think she's pretty. Her mother would say that she was too pretty, anyway, to fight. Fighting wasn't ladylike. Fighting would ruin her pretty little face before got to properly grow unto her. Her mother would tell her that she would never find a husband when she grew up, if she kept fighting like that, if she wasn't gracious or nice enough, if she ruined her pretty little face.

PPG identity-swapping hcs

Blossom didn't wanna do it at first, not until Buttercup showed a real talent for Advanced Algebra. That's the thing with Buttercup, see, she's good at following directions and making battlefield decisions- what's formulas and equations to the toughest fighter but just another battle tactic? Attending Buttercup's history class in turn, is a small price to pay (even if the black wig is itchy, and the contact lenses are even moreso).

It all started with Bubbles not wanting to get her hands dirty with woodshop, and Buttercup not wanting anything to do with Computer Science. Coincidentally, both classes take place at the same time. They bought the wigs, the box of hair dyes, and spent a week in each other's rooms training each other on how to act. It was scary successful; Buttercup can copy Bubbles' voice perfectly, and Bubbles gets the aloof tough-girl act down to a T.

Bubbles takes both Blossom's and Buttercup's foreign language class (Spanish for Buttercup, French for Blossom). While Buttercup attends both of their Phys Ed classes, and Blossom's always got most of the Science classes covered.

Everytime Blossom is making a speech during a press conference, it's actually Bubbles in a wig because she's more comfortable with the attention. The speech is almost always made by Buttercup (then proofread by Blossom) because Buttercup was the one most involved in the fight.

When Bubbles had to start wearing glasses for all the time she spent looking at screens, both Blossom and Buttercup had to buy fake glasses and wear it whenever Bubbles needs to wear hers. For triplet solidarity.

Princess Morebucks probably gets a crush on Blossom in Advanced Algebra- but the thing is, it's not Blossom at all (it's a clueless Buttercup).

Brick can tell them apart by height, Blossom is the shortest.

Butch tells them apart by body type, Buttercup's got a bigger ass.

Boomer tells them apart by the contact lenses, Bubbles' eyes are a specific shade of blue, and her smile is special.

When Blossom left for college in lieu of attending Senior Year, Bubbles and Buttercup agreed to quit the identity-swapping. It wouldn't be the same without Blossom, after all.

Back when Brick didn't know about the identity-swapping, he'd spend hours and hours just arguing with Buttercup about tactics and techniques. He starts mentoring her like a big brother should, even after he found out that she was Buttercup all along.

Blossom sends Bubbles in her place if she wants to appear as the lovable hero; Blossom sends in Buttercup if she needs to appear like the firm infallible leader.

The Professor is the first to know about the identity-swapping, thinking it's a joke, he lets them carry on. Until Blossom comes home crying, apparently rejected by a girl that believed her to be Bubbles.

The reason why they're not caught by the teaching staff is because they're the Powerpuff Girls. They've practically been saving the city since they were born- why would they swap identities??? That's crazy talk~ The city knows their personalities pretty well- or at least they think so.

With her sister's permission (and behest), Buttercup gets to be unhinged (sometimes downright rude) when rejecting date invites on behalf of Blossom and Bubbles.

Ironically, Blossom and Bubbles are sometimes too successful in getting Buttercup a date behind her back. ("Wait, you set me up with who?" "Nevermind that, you can't make that date anyways, because you have to meet with my guy instead." "Didn't I tell you two to leave my love life alone?" "We didn't mean to double book you, lolhahah")

Boys do that.) is so engrained in his mind that it’s not even something he thinks can be changed, if that makes sense? Anyways I don’t think he’s the type to get dysphoria he moreso experiences euphoria when exploring his gender identity. I think he would realize he has different views on his own gender when he sees other people expressing their own differently. Like genuinely he goes to school and sees another boy wearing lipstick and his brain blows up. As of this very moment he’s “exploring” but he’s actually a lil scared to genuinely confront himself about this and uses “there’s bigger problems in the world” to get out of it. End goal is non-binary but for now he’s at the veeeeeeery tail end of questioning.

Damian: I think at the moment Damian’s just not thinking about any of that but it’s in the opposite of duke; he knows he’s probably some kind of queer, both in sexuality and gender, but it’s just. Not top priority for him at the moment. I wanna bring up clothes rq bc, extra hc time, in MY mind Damian does express himself a lot through his clothing and getting to the manor made him a bit shy when it came to skirts and dresses. Seeing the way boys, and especially black and brown boys, who explore their femininity are treated, he just doesn’t mention it at all and the scenario never comes up. He gets more comfortable as time goes on though and later on gets bold enough to wear a dress to an event. He’s stonefaced but slightly regretting it till some younger kid sees him and is awe stricken, like stars in his eyes and asking if he can do that too. Damian feels better about it and resolves to wear whatever he wants more often. I don’t think he ever comes out in big big way (he’d tell the people closest to him but everyone else can just figure it out) but he genuinely doesn’t feel the need to label himself at all.
