So where does that leave Lucy?

At times Lucy catches sight of this sort of dance that Erza and Mira do. They perform the roles of a butch and her femme. Mira prepares the food, shares gossip, and flashes a pretty smile. Erza pulls out the chair, carries whatever's heaviest, and gives Mira a kiss. It's a show of sorts.

And then, at another point in time, she catches sight of Mira, who is sitting on the steps behind Fairy Hills. In those quiet moments, without the makeup that hides her eye bags, without the cute dress, without the smile... smoking a cigarette and sharing a late night beer with Erza... And the two look so alike that for a moment she cannot recognize Mirajane Strauss. so i’m not the op of the post in question and also i am not a butch lesbian so i’m obviously not trying to speak from a perspective i don’t have. but, at more of a surface level, i guess i do see where you’re coming from: if you take will’s canon gender nonconformity (and its direct correlation to his experience with sexuality) and translate that to a lesbyler au, it makes sense that the immediate inclination would be to make her butch — to have the inverse of that gender nonconformity play out, one that is also directly correlated to her sexuality and would often ostracize her from the general (heterosexual) population. however to me, characterization across these types of AUs is more about maintaining a character’s core traits and values, which i think is what op was getting at in their tags and the overall intent of the post. which is of course not to say that will’s experience with being gnc is not a vital part of his character and story, but more so that i think mike’s core personality traits and values align a lot more closely with the historic associations with the butch experience and identity than will’s do (re: op’s tags — being a knight, protector, etc). these types of takes are a lot more interesting to me because i feel like they go one step further than the more immediate and instinctive interpretations and instead create a kind of thought exercise that i find really, really fun: taking the traits that really set a character apart from the others (e.g: mike and will sharing a lot of the core traits and values that their overall story is built off of, while also being so, so different in other ways that fuel their independent arcs) and keeping those consistent while changing so much about the world around them. and, in the case of a lesbyler au, even changing parts of who they are and the expectations placed on men vs. women and their experiences with sexuality because of it. what makes a gay man gnc and how he is treated because of it will always be a lot different than how a gnc lesbian is treated, and i think there’s a lot of nuance to this that could be really interesting to explore.

Question for ya about genderbent mac and gender/sexuality performance. Assuming she would have a similar repression then coming out experience, would you change her appearance/presentation? I feel like in recent seasons mac's changed so much so I'm curious how you'd represent that in your art!

okay so! @bitseventimes made some really good points in this post about this idea already so i’m kinda piggybacking.

short answer: not really? i’d keep her presentation pretty in line with canon mac so she’d be rockin the tommy bahamas shirts the same seasons as him. i think my version of fem mac would have always been sorta masc except for the few occasions she’s had to put on a dress. but she’d complain about it the whole time. I think her evolving relationship with gender expression and sexuality over the seasons would be less visual and more internal/behavioral.

long answer: unfortunately i don’t think it’s really possible to do a perfect 1 to 1 genderswap parallel that carries ALL the nuances of a character’s relationship queerness/gender expression while still keeping that character recognizable. so it’s okay to bend the rules a little. my headcanon is that fem mac was always a tomboy but saw femininity as a shitty obligation you have to deal with once in a while for show, similar to canon mac’s relationship with having sex with women. i think i saw someone hc that fem mac would wear dresses to church to be closer to god and like yeah. that’s exactly it. overall her demeanor and interests and style would stay pretty close to canon mac. i think early seasons mac would feel ashamed for not being as put together as other girls and especially denise who always has perfect hair and perfect makeup and mac can’t even put eyeliner on without almost blinding herself. and that combined with repressed lesbianism would manifest into this misogynistic pick me “i’m not like other girls” mentality. she’d still have just as much cognitive dissonance as canon mac—convincing herself that dudes like natural girls better anyway but also of course denise has gotten laid so many times she always looks like a whore. and then that changes when mac comes to terms with being gay. (some of the misogyny is still there though this is it’s always sunny in philadelphia). anyways she starts fully embracing the butch thing with more confidence in the later seasons because turns out bitches really dig it. but if denise wants to do her make up every once in a while she sure won’t complain. if you really want to explore queer repression in relation to hyperfemininity it’s wayyy more interesting through denise’s character and it fits really well with whats already established in canon dennis. mac’s performance of femininity would exist as this external factor but denise’s performance of femininity would be so much more internalized and rooted in her self worth. mac takes her heels off 15 minutes into the party because she’s impulsive and it’s irritating and denise bears through the pain because if she can’t be beautiful then what is she whats the point? denise would belittle mac for not putting enough effort into her appearance but deep down she wants the strap so fucking bad would be sort of jealous of the freedom mac has with her appearance and she’d grow more and more resentful toward her in the later seasons after mac comes out.

OK a lot of my thoughts about them are very much half formed and just sort of floating around in my brain so i don't really know how to verbalise them (something i should have thought about before i posted lmao) but they are very much there. so.

cait (aka agent caitlin mega) is like if u took curt mega and put him in his ultimate nightmare situation. missions are way less dangerous and exciting and being a woman in the 50s means she can't dress how she wants (at the start of her career she's very butch but as the lavender scare approaches she changes her clothes and hair to draw less suspicion. she still wears pants whenever possible and cuts her hair as short as 50s standards will allow though) and she's underestimated by her peers despite the director of the a.s.s. also being a woman and generally improving views on female spies in 50s america. unlike canon curt her confidence, recklessness and physical strength don't get her much respect as a spy or as a woman in general. so that combined with the inherent loneliness of the job means that when she meets ollie carvour (who understands the experience of being not only a female spy but also a lesbian in the lavender scare) they immediately form a strong connection and it doesn't take long for both of them to start catching feelings. i think in general these guys would be a little more emotionally open with each other than i think canon curtwen would, considering for women there was less stigma around showing vulnerability. but they're still stubborn asses in a very competitive and ruthless profession so it's not too dissimilar.

ollie (aka agent olwen jane carvour) is not quite as different to canon but i wanna talk about her anyway just for funsies. historically britain's views on female spies were generally more conservative than the us so based on that olwen would have had to work harder to be taken seriously. however, she has an advantage over cait in that she fits 1950s standards for women (in espionage and in general) both in her general style and mannerisms and her manner of working - stealthy and methodical as opposed to cait's tendency to wing it and blow shit up. ollie uses people's impressions of her to her advantage, blending into social events seamlessly as a charming young debutante despite being downright murderous. this tires her to no end, and until she meets cait she feels like she has to entirely mask anything even slightly non-heteronormative about her to succeed in her job. then she meets this bold, reckless american agent who keeps her hair just a bit too short and never seems to wear skirts, and she suddenly feels seen.

This isn't gonna be too terribly long, but I'll put it under a Read More anyways. Also will be including nonbinary headcanons here, since being nonbinary is (usually?) considered a subset of being trans. At least that's my perspective as an agender person. :u

(I realized I was going to also include sexuality for some of these characters, but since you mentioned trans specifically, I'll just cover that here. I can do one for LGBT+ headcanons in general too, maybe as a separate ask/post, if you want!)

Solace is a trans man, which is something I think most of the fandom here on Tumblr agrees on, lol

Mesh is a nonbinary man! In his case he defines it as a combo of nonbinary + trans man, and he's fine with he or they pronouns.

Shine is a trans woman and I will not let anyone take that away from me :P

Twoson and Fourside of DOT EXE (so the two ball and four ball members) are agender and nonbinary, respectively! Already mentioned in my big DOT EXE post, but might as well mention it here too. Also to reiterate from that post, the two of them falling under the nonbinary umbrella was the case even before they went full-cyber. I say that since some people might assume that them going full-cyber caused the nonbinary-ness, but that is not the case.

Charles (summer palette for the Franks) is a trans man, Flesh Prince did his top surgery!

Lyra (autumn palette for Eclipse, the one with blue hair) is a trans woman. The rest of Eclipse know and still love and accept her, especially since they ain't fuckin' TERFs. I have actually seen some people insist Eclipse would "totally" be TERFs, and I'm just like, nah nah nah, get out of here with that absolute garbage idea. >:U

Lastly there's Nunchaku, my Devil Theory OC for the summer palette for that crew. She's a butch lesbian! I never did specify whether she's cis or trans, and even though I might say she's "probably cis", at the same time I don't think she'd want to answer either way.

In the sense of, if you asked her about it and you're a stranger to her:

If she were trans, she wouldn't feel comfortable saying that to a stranger, and so she'd decline to answer.

If she were cis, she'd think it isn't a stranger's business to know either way, so she wouldn't answer out of spite.

The only certainty is that, if a friend or girlfriend asked her about it, she would say, "Dude, my gender is basically just 'butch lesbian' in and of itself. Not just woman, specifically butch lesbian as a gender." And then leave it at that!

So I guess depending on how you think/feel about it, Nunchaku might or might not count as trans. Definitely LGBT+ though. :P

dashi: i am a hardcore tweak/dashi shipper all the way, and while i think dashi is a very professional person (dog?), i think she’s also really good with people and knows how to use her skills to get what she wants. i think she totally worked in like customer service or something pre-octonauts and that she would charm her clients and customers almost instinctively. however, flirting for her, while common, is something she doesn’t really view as flirting flirting? like, it’s just something she does to steer the conversation in a more favorable direction. she very rarely actually means it, or genuinely tries to flirt, so that’s why she’s not where kwazii is. she was struggling with tweak though lol.

Ooooh, Boyd asks! How about where the Boyd characters would be in the omegaverse? Like, I really headcanon Donald Pierce as a total alpha, and that's what drives the conflict between him and Logan.

Look SOMEONE has made me think about omegaverse a WHOLE LOT recently, leading to me having to personally figure out a whole genital arrangement/puberty situation with presenting, because I CANNOT abide butt-babies. I needed it to make sense! Anyway, now I get to make this everyone’s problem. Behold.

Steve Murphy: Steve Murphy is a beta and totally fine with it. He can’t imagine being any other way. In fact, he actively doesn’t want to think about that. Connie is a beta too, and he assumed this would make for a satisfactory match despite being le gay. He often assumes his lack of sexual interest in her (or his previous SO’s) is because he’s a beta and just Not Built That Way. Gets real confused when he starts getting horned up for Javi. Actually goes to a bemused doctor to make sure he’s not going through a very weird and delayed puberty.

Donald Pierce: I *personally* HC Pierce as a beta who is *not* okay with it. He’d much rather be either an alpha for the respect it affords (and the big dick that comes with), or - privately - an omega, so he’d at least have an excuse for feeling all these urges that he does. And omegas get to be kept and adored! He wants that!

Cap Hatfield: Aw, Cap is an asexual little omega who gets *so* confused about his first heat. It’s all these feelings and impulses he’s never had before, and it’s really uncomfortable and overwhelming. He’s got some stone butch energy, and it’s so weird having this intense period of time where he’s sort of out of his mind and wanting all these things he normally cannot stand (and still sort of doesn’t love!).

Clement Mansell: Clement is 100% an omega that pretends to be an alpha. He sprays on alpha pheromones, and packs with a truly ridiculous phallus to give himself the appearance of a big bulge. He almost exclusively tries to get with omega girls to prove to himself he’s just as good as an alpha, but doesn’t ever take his clothes off with them to let them see he’s not an alpha.

The Corinthian: Dream made him in the standard human mold, so beta it is! Sometimes in nightmares he can switch between types, but in the waking world he’s a beta.

Eli Klaber: Ooh Klaber is such a classic omega. He’s the stereotypical housewife type that wants nothing more than to nest and get bred up.

Ty Shaw: Ty’s an alpha, but sometimes he likes to go out, spray himself with omega pheromones, and have some alpha fuck his ass while they call it a pussy. He totally gets a kick of playing omega for his long term partners too, and might even prefer having alpha girlfriends and boyfriends that are vers like him.

Quinn McKenna: Quinn is an alpha. He takes suppressants so he doesn’t go into rut. He finds the whole thing really annoying. His ex-wife, an omega, used to complain that he acted like a beta in bed (ie, not being constantly ready to go and hyper-aggro). He replied she’d been watching too much porn. This developed into yet another ongoing argument.

JJ NEVER LIKED BOYS. When she was little, she didn't like the way they looked. She didn't like the way that they smelled. She didn't like their jokes. She didn't like the way they would pull her hair or push her down or pinch her or call her names. Even aside from those the things she didn't like, even as a little girl, she never found them interesting. She didn't even notice little boys in her class until they bothered her enough that she had no choice but to notice things she didn't like. She didn't really notice them until her hair got pulled, until she got poked with pencils, until she had crayons, sand and God knows what else thrown at her. She didn't notice them until she was randomly being shoved to the ground, until she was randomly pinched, until she was randomly called some demeaning name.

JJ was a fighter. If she got her hair pulled, she pulled their hair right back. If she got pushed down, she got up, dusted herself off and pushed them right back. If someone threw something at her, she'd throw it right back.

And every time, she would think how she didn't like boys. Every time she would think about how girls were so much less annoying. Girls were nice. They drew each other pretty pictures. They played fun games together. Girls were interesting.

JJ can't tell you who said it her first, that boys were only mean like that when they wanted a girl to be their girlfriend, but it changed everything for her.

(She didn't understand the logical, either)(She pulled out chairs for girls she liked, gave them snacks out of her lunchbox, and shared her toys. She let them win in all their games. She held their hands at nap time.)(But she didn't hit them. She didn't pull their hair. She didn't push them down. She never called them mean names)(It made no sense that little boys would do those things when they liked girls)(It made even less sense that they were allowed to.)

The mention of the boys wanting her to be their girlfriend meant no more was she just doing what was done unto her. Her first fight, her first real right, happened when a little boy yanked her ponytail at recess and called her stupid. She wasn't just annoyed now. As she turned around, the only thought in her mind was how much she didn't want to be his girlfriend. So, she didn't just pull his rat-tail. As she punched him, once, twice, six times and while she was doing it, all she could think about was how she never wanted him to want her to be his girlfriend.

She kept fighting after that. I mean, really fighting. She never stopped getting attention from boys, and she was determined to stop being liked.

She got in so much trouble for it. Oftentimes more trouble than her male counterparts. Her teachers, her mother especially would tell her that she should be nicer. That the boys didn't mean anything by their behavior, that they just liked her and she wasn't being fair to them. Her mother would tell her to be gracious. She would tell her that she should think of herself as so lucky that so many boys think she's pretty. Her mother would say that she was too pretty, anyway, to fight. Fighting wasn't ladylike. Fighting would ruin her pretty little face before got to properly grow unto her. Her mother would tell her that she would never find a husband when she grew up, if she kept fighting like that, if she wasn't gracious or nice enough, if she ruined her pretty little face.

JJ started to fight more.
