the cozy dim light of the kitchen illuminated the various ingredients laid out on the kitchen. jaehee’s gaze was soft but fully focused. you two had spent the day figuring out seasonal snacks for the cafe. you dusted her nose with flour as she pulled you closer. her laugh echoed through the kitchen, filling you with a warmth you adored. she'd hand you a pastry for you to taste and tell her your thoughts. she studied your expressions, seeing what you liked. and what you didn't. it was clear the passion she had regain after quitting. it made you happy to see her finally bright. to see her have life in her. it was even more special that you were the one to help her see it. that life doesn't have to be miserable.

waking up to snow wasn't completely surprising, you had expected it for a while. what you didn't expect was waking up to the other side of the bed empty. usually, jumin would notify you if he was to leave. you groggily get up, petting elizabeth as you exited the room. the sweet smell of breakfast and coffee found you, heading to the kitchen you expected one of the various of chefs. but found jumin instead. he revealed he had been taking secret cooking classes to surprise you with a breakfast in bed. he was slightly disappointed you'd woken up a bit earlier than expected.

you loved the winter season. even more than that you loved the holiday festivities. you expressed to jihyun that you'd wanted to decorate the house for the season. he made it an entire day activity. he was mainly there just to help you put decorations where you couldn't reach or to put up things you couldn't carry. he just loved seeing your bright smile. you two ended the day putting up a christmas tree. you sighed, leaning your head on his shoulder. he pulled you closer, as you two admired the tree. it was the first time in a long time that he was able to fully appreciate the pretty lights.

while half-heartedly watching a bad hallmark movie, saeran asked if people really did do these activities. your heart ached a bit remembering that he'd never experienced anything like that as a child. you nodded before stating that you were going to help him be able to experience them. he was a bit hesitant but with a little push, agreed. the first thing was to build a snowman. he felt a bit awkward at first, questioning why he gave in. but eventually, he grown fond of it. he gently placed a hat, finishing the snowman. he let out a laugh, proud of your shared efforts into making such a silly thing.

this was planned out to be just an outing for some hot chocolate but ended up as taking a walk through the park. you nudged into him slightly, continuing the playful banter between you two. he laughed, bouncing back into you. you both found a trash can to dispose your garbage. and as saeyoung asked if you were ready to head back, you'd ran into where the grass would have been, now piled up with bright snow. in seconds, a snowball was formed in your hands. you playfully threw it at him as he was none the wiser. he dramatically gasped as if he was offended before chasing you with a snowball of his own. you continued your little snowball fight for a bit, before he swept you in his arms. causing the two of you to crash down (unhurt) before placing a soft kiss on your lips.

yoosung pouted like a troubled puppy, as you try to help him with his finals. he whined that he should be celebrating the season with you doing more exciting things. you'd assured him that he'd be able to. he continued to pout as you sipped on your coffee. you added that a cafe date was actually very cute to you, causing him to immediately perk up. you smiled seeing the effect your love had on him. it was sweet and innocent, at times. with a newfound resolve, he pushed through his studies. after a bit, you both decided to pack it up for the day. as yoosung returned his books in his bag, he remembered what he initially came here for. unbeknownst to you, he bought you an early gift. he laid out a box in his hands, revealing a pretty necklace inside.

winter season was busy for most celebrities and actors. there were plenty of cheesy romcom movies to be made. even though zen wasn't a big name yet, he was just as busy. however, he still made incredible effort to spend as much time as he could with you. though he felt bad for most of that time being behind the scenes of whichever project he was currently on. which is why he'd taken matters into his own hands. he invited you out for a surprise date, not revealing any hints. even going to the extent to blindfold you until you reached the location. he'd 'rented' (agreed to do an ad) out an ice-skating park. you were hesitant for your lack of skills. zen assured you that he'd take care of you. and he did. you weren't as good as he was but, he was a great teacher.

jaehee kang thought dump under the cut... nobody can stop me...

i recently decided to replay jaehee's route due to a friend (i first played this game in early 2020) and i'm actually ill over her route. i've played literally every route and i don't think any of them make me feel quite as strongly as jaehee's.

and i can't quite pinpoint why... i think part of it might actually be because of the lack of romance? like. don't get me wrong i love jaehee and i do wish romancing her was an option. but i feel like taking away that option made it so much more... potent, somehow... less like you're "fixing her" and "fixing her life" (which is. unfortunately kind of how i feel about some other routes) and more just like. opening her eyes to the life she deserves. and it's not even just you doing it this time- all of the RFA members come together to support her (except jumin but he's evil in her route wbk), and it feels like such a breath of fresh air.

lee basil pointed something out in a video essay i watched recently (incredible video btw) which went into yoosung's route. they pointed out that the characters really change depending on whose route you're playing and not necessarily always in a good way. but in jaehee's route, i think the characterization is really perfect.

like the amount of emotional intelligence and kindness each character has is so strong and just makes me So Happy, especially compared to yoosung's route. Actually, on the topic of that- i wasn't going to go into how jaehee acts in his route but now i want to because. WTF. no hate to yoosung at all- i love him and his route- but why are the characters so... Dumb...? sometimes? You're telling me when someone (can't remember who sorry but trust me) is like "yoosung is probably addicted to games and lost his passion for school because he's grieving rika," jaehee's response is something like, "no way... i had no idea..."

cheritz, look at me. she would Not fucking say that. if any of these characters have the strongest grasp on what it's like to grieve someone, it would be jaehee?

anyway. back to her route. can i talk about how much more it hits now that i'm no longer thirteen/fourteen years old playing it. like she's touching on capitalism and the loss of her happiness and passion because of it. she's touching on how grief still impacts her life. she's touching on how the support of the people around her is all she needs to keep going during these Trying Times of the Unfortunate Reign of Jumin Han and the Cat Hotel Project. she talks about her rough upbringing and how she felt like she was only worthy of other's company and support if she was working and making something of herself. and it feels really great to be able to go in there and be like, Hey. You're still worthy of a lot even if you aren't overworking yourself. You deserve better than this, and not just that, you can have better than this. like. really serves as a reminder to Myself that the same still applies to Me.

and she isn't met with criticism for beginning to develop that sentiment thanks to the support of MC- in fact, everyone around her is literally begging jaehee to FREE HERSELF! i just love the community that her route builds up and how sweet it is. i love being able to watch her sort through her feelings and break out of that mindset of "i'm not worth anything if i'm not doing something."

and the fact that she develops that mindset because of the way she was raised... losing her parents, moving in with her relatives who treated her poorly, who wanted her to get a job straight after high school. but jaehee didn't want to be a disappointment. she went through college, she worked hard, she got a stable job with a great salary. she's such a hard worker that jumin hardly considers her human- which is awful. but definitely showcases how incredible she is.

but she doesn't even blame her relatives or anyone else for the fact that her life is the way it is and that is also monumental to me? like her relatives were actively going against everything she wanted to do, but when jaehee talks about them, she's like, "i think they did the best they could, and i'm very grateful they took me in." that's amazing. she internalizes everything she feels and doesn't push blame onto anyone but herself, and while that's not always a good trait to have, i think it really does show how like. intrinsically motivated she is as a person to do the best she can, all the time.

also, don't even get me staaaarted on the fact that she cares about jumin so much even though he treats her absolutely awful. she feels bad for him for the amount of work he has in her route. she empathizes with him more than he ever does with her. if i were her i would probably go to jumin's penthouse and hit everything with a metal bat. she's stronger than me.

anyway, in all seriousness... i'm glad she gets her happy ending leaving her terrible job behind and actually getting to do something she's passionate about. i think her passion for coffee is adorable and the fact that that passion literally becomes her Life in her good ending? it's adorable.

a popular complaint i see regarding jaehee's route is that it feels more like zen getting jaehee's route LMFAO. but. i personally think that the friendship she builds up with zen over the course of her route is so beautiful. if you play from the prologue to the end he literally goes from not recognizing her in a photo seven sends to buying her a present and telling her that he's going to make it a life goal of his to continue supporting her in all of her dreams. he goes from thinking things are kind of awkward with her to buying her a present and getting lunch with her.

and i also think that's really beautiful for jaehee, getting to hang out with someone who inspires her and whom she admires so much. in fact, i'd argue that it makes even more sense for zen to be such a central part of her route because... he basically planted the seeds for inspiration and joy in jaehee? long before MC ever came around. he just didn't realize he could do so much for her until MC does come around. i think it's also great that jaehee gets that support from the guy who is basically her idol, because it makes it so that it means that much more to her.

like idk there's something poetic about jaehee saying that zen (referring to his acting and musicals etc) is the only thing that brings her happiness, and then actually finding happiness outside of zen because he encourages her to do so by supporting her. You know what i mean? is the parallel paralleling. maybe i'm just in my own echo chamber WHATEVER my point stands. i love jaehee and zen i think they're best friends.

All About Lust (욕망이라는 것에 대하여) by Gong Lyong Kim (김공룡)

I read All About Lust (욕망이라는 것에 대하여) by Gong Lyong Kim (김공룡) a few years ago, but I don't think it was completed at the time. But, it recently got moved over to tapas and when I saw it I was like "!!! Hey! This thing!" Anyway, it is completed now, so I just about inhaled it.

All About Lust is a webtoon following two couples. It starts with Wooseung, an art student who initially falls in love with the art of one of his seniors, Sunjin. His feelings about Sunjin's art are so strong, that he starts to like the person, as well. He feels sure that he is in love with Sunjin and, being the earnest young man he is, confesses to him. As soon as he does, Sunjin confesses to Wooseung that he likes him too! Wonderful, you would think! But, Sunjin's feelings for Wooseung are the polar opposite to Wooseung's pure and innocent feelings.

This story is primarily about the different ways that people experience love and lust and how they navigate those differences. Wooseung and Sunjin both like each other romantically. But, Wooseung has never considered anything more than holding hands or MAYBE gently kissing when he confesses to Sunjin. His feelings are all love, with little to no lust. Meanwhile, Sunjin's attraction to Wooseung is pretty much completely manifested by lustful, explicit feelings for him. The second couple, Kim Jaehee and Kange Bumchul conflicts are more centered around how much they want to negotiate their relationship before moving forward, or if they prefer to just do things when they feel right without talking about it.

A lot of this story is about communication and compromise, which is so refreshing in a romance. The way everyone talks to each other, the ways that they mess up, but still like each other, and how they support (or don't support) each other felt really authentic to me. I also love the art style sooooo much. It's really simple and minimal, but somehow it can be really beautiful too? I love the bold lines and the simple color palette.

All that to say, I cannot recommend this webtoon enough! If you haven't read it yet, and you like BL webtoons, I think you absolutely have to give it a try.

There was still so much work to be done, but the once perpetually strung-out woman was thriving on the high of cappuccinos and freedom.

The two worked side-by-side to tend to the influx of customers that were flooding in with a little help from some very aggressive advertising from the defender of justice and small businesses, and every once in a while they’d brush hips as they passed by each other, further injecting MC with heart palpitations.

As the last straggler of the day meandered out and Jaehee switched the sign to closed, she leaned against the store with a content sigh, her cheeks flush with hard work and excitement.

Overcome with a sudden bout of happiness, Jaehee surprised both herself and her business partner by throwing her arms around MC with a disbelieving laugh.

“That went better than I could have ever imagined!” she rambled, hugging her close, “It’s all thanks to you, MC.”

“It’s thanks to both of us, Jaehee,” MC managed to respond amidst dying of happiness at the contact, “This place is your baby, you brought it to life. I’m so proud of you.”

Spurred on by the unusual behavior Jaehee displayed, MC worked up the courage to place a chaste kiss on her left cheek.

Jahee’s eyes widened momentarily before she started giggling.

“Wow, I’ve never had such a close friendship before!”

“Friendship?” MC squeaked, “Right, yes, friendship. The friendliest friendship that ever did… friend.”

2. mr. steal yo girl

When Zen got the lead in a huge musical, his two biggest fangirls were, naturally, front and center at the very first show.

Of course, MC was a bigger fan of the serene smile that graced Jaehee’s lips when she watched the performances, but you didn’t hear that from me.

After the show ended, they went backstage to greet their friend and shower him in the compliments he thrived on.

In retrospect, perhaps MC had been laying it on a little thick by jumping into Zen’s arms and proclaiming him to be a musical savant and the face of their generation, but there was no quicker way to get the man she considered an older brother smiling.

Jaehee was much more reserved, as was the norm, but this time she seemed to be a little… put out.

As the two waited for Zen outside the theater while he changed, the chilly air matching Jaehee’s demeanor, MC shoved her hands into the pockets of the coat their silver-haired friend had insisted she put on awkwardly, sparing little glances at the brunette beside her.

Finally, Jaehee cleared her throat, adjusting her collar and turning to face MC.

“I know it’s not really any of my business, but if you and Zen are planning on getting together, I think you should reconsider,” Jaehee spoke concisely.

MC whipped her head to face Jaehee so fast she thought she was going to get whiplash.

Her intentions of immediately denying the implication died out and were replaced with curiosity and a dangerous, dangerous spark of hope.

“Yeah?” she tilted her head to the side, “Why would you say that? Are you… jealous?”

“Jealous?” Jaehee spluttered out, her cheeks turning red, “Of- of course not! It’s just, from one friend to another I can’t see it ending in any other way but heartbreak for yourself and damage to Zen’s career.”

MC bit her tongue so hard she thought she was going to bleed.

3. holly jolly jealousy

At the RFA Christmas party, MC stuffed her face with the HBC that Saeyoung had smuggled in amidst the way-too-fancy hors d’oeuvres and watched on grumpily as yet another man flirted with Jaehee.

The woman was growing comfortable with herself outside of the corporate world, inside and out, and people were starting to take notice. MC was pouting because she had noticed first and why did anyone else think it was okay to flirt with her Jaehee, damn it.

“What’s wrong MC?” Saeyoung snickered, “Girlfriend troubles?”

“Shut up, ugly ass fuckin tomato head,” she threw , before sighing, “if only I had girlfriend troubles.”

At this moment, a flustered looking Jaehee ambled over, looking at MC pleadingly.

“MC, thank God,” she sighed, “if another man flirts with me, can you pretend to be my girlfriend? I have no idea what’s going on, but I-,”

“Yep,” MC linked arms with her without any hesitation, startling Jaehee slightly.

“Thank you so much!” Jaehee smiled, “You’re such a good friend.”

MC discretely flipped off Saeyoung as he cackled wickedly behind them.

4. the great pajama incident

Exhausted from a long day’s work, Jaehee insisted that MC sleep over at her place since it was much closer.

MC set up the movie while Jaehee went to go change into her pajamas, pushing one of Zen’s musicals into the DVD player while popcorn popped in the microwave in the kitchen adjacent to the living room.

“Oh!” Jaehee called out, rushing into the room as the opening credits began to play, “I don’t want to miss the first scene.”

In her haste, she had yet to put on her pajama shirt and thus came out clutching it, only in pajama shorts and a modest bra.

MC started wheezing so hard she had a coughing fit, immediately turning around to face the opposite direction, her face a mess of red.

“What? Oh, sorry did that make you uncomfortable?” Jaehee shrugged on the shirt, a little embarrassed, “I just assumed you’d be fine with it, since we’re friends and all.”

“No problem,” MC squeaked out, barely breathing.

The two stood in awkward silence for a moment before Jaehee cleared her throat.

“Uh, MC?”

“Yep?”

“The popcorn’s burning.”

“Oh God.”

1. we finally made it

Jaehee looked up from cleaning the counter to observe MC laughing loudly with a man near the front of the café, and a pang of something resonated throughout her.

As the man leaned down to kiss MC – her MC – on the forehead, Jaehee scrubbed so hard at the countertop that the paint began to rub off slightly.

She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding as her friend excused herself from the suspicious male and approached her.

“Hey,” MC gave her a cheerful smile, “Will you be alright if I head out for a few hours? I’ll be back before the evening rush.”

“Uh, we’re so busy though,” Jaehee’s voice came out a little squeaky.

MC frowned in confusion, turning around to scan the nearly-empty café.

“I mean, sure,” Jaehee sighed in resignation, “Go have fun.”

“Thanks Jaehee!” MC brightened, “You’re an awesome friend. I’ll pick up a shift on Monday to pay you back.”

Jaehee didn’t understand why that commented made her sick to her stomach as MC linked arms with the man and exited the premises.

In fact, she was so overcome with confusion that she accidentally spilled coffee all over one of their regulars.

“Gee,” the man grumbled, “Your girlfriend is a much better server.”

And just like that, realization crashed over her like a wave of gay.

Without so much as an apology to the man, she quickly untied her apron and tossed it behind the counter, racing out the doors.

It only took her a few minutes of running down the city blocks like a mad-woman to catch up with MC and her date, letting out a cry that caused the two to turn and look at her in shock.

“MC,” she panted slightly from the physical exertion, running a hand through her slightly grown-out hair, “I.. don’t want to be your friend.”

She winced slightly at how blunt it came across, but a look of utter jubilance graced MC’s features.

“Finally,” she mumbled, before crashing her lips to Jaehee’s.

Along the sidelines, MC’s cousin awkwardly looked away.

for the longest time, happiness had become a foreign concept in your mind. it was a vague passing feeling, coming and going like the tides of the ocean. most of the time, you were only able to feel the warmth of waves at the tips of your toes and fingers, slowly retreating to fill the spaces with the everlasting coldness you were familiar with. that was until you met zen and jaehee. you were drawn to them just like you were drawn to the warmth of the ocean. being in their presence brought you something so familiar yet so new to you that you practically craved it like it was your lifeline.

and you knew you were the same for them. you were their lifeline while they didn't realize they were yours in return.

"what's on your mind?" jaehee's voice rang through your ears suddenly, her fingers running through your hair that was sprawled out across her lap.

you quickly became aware of your surroundings after you had gotten lost in thought, zen leaning against the headboard of your bed, fingers dancing across his phone screen as he answered emails from various producers. jaehee was sat next to him, her head resting on his shoulder as your head laid in her lap.

if you had been honest with jaehee, you would have said that there was a lot on your mind. you were struggling, to say the least. it was just one of those days and the reoccurring thought your brain decided to play like clockwork was the idea that zen and jaehee were better off without you. they were better off without the person who accidentally left the coffee pot with too little coffee in it, without the person who sometimes forgot to hang up their towels in the bathroom. they were better off without you in a sense that all your traces were wiped from their memory. the last christmas you spent together where you had kissed the tip of jaehee's nose to remove the trace of whipped cream after a mug of hot chocolate. the valentine's day where zen surprised the both of you with the recreation of your favorite scene from one of his plays. all those memories gone if you just weren't there. and it sounded simple to you, it sounded like a better option than needing a full day with zen and jaehee in bed pampering you in affection and reassurance when you shouldn't be there in the first place.

but you weren't honest, you couldn't be honest.

"just a lot of thoughts on my mind." you mumbled out as your eyes slowly shut in an attempt to drift off to sleep.

you felt jaehee shifting under you, her delicate fingers moving from your hair to your shoulders to sit you up on the shared bed. when you opened your eyes with a small groan, you met the gaze of zen and jaehee.

"you are aware that we are here for you, right?" jaehee's voice was soft, zen locked his phone and placed it on the bedside table so his attention was fully on you. his fingers danced against the skin of your cheek, wiping away a few tears you hadn't realized escaped your eyes.

"you were there for us through our hardest times, let us do the same for you." zen's voice was softer than you were used to, you could hear his heart breaking just from the sight of the tears against your skin.

and without any warning, the tears and words came pouring out like a tidal wave breaking glass. you were stumbling over your words, clumsy with your tongue as you tried to match your speech with the speed of your thoughts. you were being pulled in too many directions, the strings holding you together were finally collapsing and you could feel every heartbreak and hurt you've gone through covering the room with a thick cloud of gloom.

you had never been honest with the two before, not this honest. you had told them bits and pieces, saving them from the darkness that lingered in the corners of your minds in a selfish attempt to keep them close to you.

every joint and muscle in your body ached but felt so relieved getting the weight of your troubles off your mind and shoulders. strands of your hair were tucked behind your ear by a warm touch you instinctively knew was jaehee. her touch was softer and more delicate, the tips of her fingers calloused from years of sorting through files when she worked for jumin. zen's touch was colder and softer, his hands untouched by the office work with his manicured nails and flawless skin.

the silence between the three of you had your heart racing. this was it, this was the time they were finally going to leave you to be better off. how could they surround themselves with someone that constantly brought so much darkness along with them? how could they surround themselves with someone that couldn't bring them sunshine on a cloudy day. this was their chance to run and leave you as an empty hollow shell of a human being.

but they didn't.

instead, you felt the warm embrace of their arms around you, pulling you closer to them. close enough that your heartbeat slowed to sync with their own. jaehee was pressing kisses to your forehead, each one slowly overwhelming the thoughts bouncing in your mind and pushing them to the side. zen was softly singing under his breath into your ear, stopping only when he needed to pull you closer to his chest.

"sweetie, you are the light to our dark. you are the sunshine to our flower." zen trailed gentle and loving kisses from your jawline to your cheek, stopping when he could pull away and make sure he was watching you closely. "without you, there would be no us. without you, there would be no stars in our galaxies."

with every word of zen's that passed his lips and made its way into your heart, you felt the looming darkness over your head retreating into the horizon. even if it may be temporary, you knew zen and jaehee would be there the next time. and you would be there for them too. that's the thing with these ever changing cloudy days, they come and go like the tides of the ocean, and the most you can say is that with sticking around, this is you trying.
