“Max you have a couple interviews soon” I said. “Yeah Y/N just give me a minute” Max said. “Max we gotta do these now I don’t have the time” I said. “Like you have anything better to do” Max said setting his helmet down. “Max I do have places to be” I said. “And I don’t care you can wait a couple minutes” Max said.

“Do you care about anyone else besides yourself” I said. “I do care about others Y/N but you don’t need to boss me around” Max said. “Forgive me for having a love life unlike you” I said. “What do you mean love life” Max said.

“Please I’m not telling you” I said walking out of his room. He followed me. “What is it another driver on the grid it is huh” Max said looking at me. “Will you shut up and get ready for these interviews” I said. “Y/N” Lando said walking over to me. “What’s up” I said. Lando looked at Max.

“Later for the quadrant video what time” Lando asked. “Whenever Lando” I said with a smile. “Okay great so umm.. ride out with me” Lando said. “Yeah absolutely” I said he smiled. “Okay great love see you later” he said kissing my cheek.

I met Lando out the paddock. He walked to me and hugged me. He then kissed my forehead.

“How was your night love” Lando said as we walked to his car. I put my bags in the trunk. I didn’t say anything to him. I just couldn’t. I was hurt. Max and I were friends for a long time. But I don’t understand why he acted the way he did to me tonight.

We got in the car. It was silent. Just silent.

“What’s on your mind” Lando said as we drove back to his place. “Nothing” I said looking out the window. He placed his hand on mine.

“You sure love” Lando said. “Yeah you know how Max gets” I said. “Doesn’t mean you deserve to feel treated badly” Lando said. “I’m alright but.. I quit” I said. “You quit being his pr manager” Lando asked. “Yeah I’m over it lan” I said. We got back to his house he shared with Max.

“Well guess what your hired” Lando said. “For” I said. “I need a manager for myself you know” Lando said. “Oh” I said. “Your first order of business is inside” Lando said. “Really what am I doing” I said. “Me perhaps” Lando said.

The following day…

I rolled over to check my phone. I had a missed call from Christian and Max. And a million texts from Max. But I really didn’t care.

“Baby come back to bed” Lando said. “Lando” I said. “Do I gotta be your boss and say it too” he said with a cute smile. I kissed his lips. “I gotta make a phone call” I said. “Alright” Lando said. I then walked outside on the balcony and answered it.

The phone call:

Max then hung up the phone. And the balcony door opened.

“Love you wanna grab breakfast before we go film the video” Lando said. “Ummm yeah but first may I borrow your car” I asked. “Yeah sure” Lando said. I threw some pants on and my shoes. I then grabbed his keys and ran downstairs.

“In a hurry” Lando said. “I’ll be back okay I gotta I deal with something” I said. “Alright drive careful” Lando said kissing me. “I will” I said.

I drove to Max’s apartment. I parked outside next to his car. I then ran upstairs to his door. I knocked a couple times.

“Max will you open up please” I said. “Why should I” Max said. “I don’t know aren’t we friends” I said he opened the door. “Friends” Max said. “We are friends” I said. “Of course you still don’t get it” Max said. “Get what you make no sense” I said.

He then pulled me into a kiss. And then I got it. How protective he always is over me. How jealous he gets over the other drivers that hit on me.

“Y/N… I’ve been in love with you for a long time” he said cupping my cheek. “Max..” I said. “What” Max said. “What if I can’t give you the answer you want” I said. “You can’t tell me you don’t feel anything” Max said.

“I… don’t know how to feel right now” I said. “I just I’m so in love with you” Max said looking at me. “Max” I said. He looked at me. I did love him. I had for years. But I got tired of waiting for him.

Then I met Lando. Someone who put me first. Someone who didn’t make me wait. Someone who made me feel loved.

“Now you tell me after I spent years loving you silently” I said. “All I wanted was you for the longest time” I said. “Y/N please don’t go” Max said. “But now that I have Lando you tell me” I said. “I should’ve told you a long time ago I know” Max said. I moved his hands.

“Maybe if you weren’t so cold hearted all the time.. you would’ve realized how much I loved you” I said. “I still love you but I can’t be with you” I said. “Y/N.. what am supposed to do” Max said.

“I don’t know Max” I said. “I’m sorry for treating you so bad sometimes” Max said. “Mmh” I said. “I just hope he… treats you well” Max said. “He does Max.. but sometimes I wonder what it would’ve been like with you” I said.

I then walked away. And that was it. I had the last word. I didn’t wanna hear anything more from him.

I drove back to Landos place. He was in the kitchen making breakfast.

“All good” Lando asked. I walked over and hugged him. “Thank you” I said. “For what silly” Lando said. “Loving me” I said. “I’ll always love you” Lando said.

I wanted to ask how does this AU deal with season 2 when Jaden goes on his solo trip into the ocean to find himself and ultimately meet the Neo Spacians!

This ask really made me realize I need to rewatch Gx again because so many things happened.

Everything in this au is fluid until I can get a true rewatch in, as things will move and shift.

But to do this we need to look back a little.

It’s Jaden’s second year and he calls Yugi on like the first day of classes. And at first Yugi is worried because Jaden just left home, he wasn’t schedualed to call until a week later. Yes he loves his son, and is so excited to hear from him, but he’s also a dad who worries for his baby boy.

But Jaden calls and tells him with all the excitement in the world that he just dueled Aster Phoenix! And he won! And sure it wasn’t Asters real deck, but the duel was so much fun and Jaden can’t wait to duel him again.

He’s talking a mile a minute and Yugi is doing his best to keep up. But wait, Aster Phoenix? Jaden are you sure? Because Yugi knows Aster Phoenix. He’s the duelist prodigy who has taken the Pro-leagues by storm.

Seto hates the kid because he uses Hero cards and he wanted them to be signature cards for Jaden like his Blue-eyes, or Atem’s Dark Magician, or Yugi’s Gandora/Silent Magician. Yugi had stoped him from getting Pegasus to private all the hero cards. Telling Seto Jaden already made his own Archtype and Seto sent them to space (it was before they knew Jaden. And sure Jaden doesnt remember them, but that doesn’t make Seto feel any less guilty, he’s been trying to get them back for years, but hasn’t found the pod yet)

But Yugi is excited for his son. Glad he’s having fun and being safe. But he wonders why Atser would duel Jaden. Let alone do it with a fake deck. Something doesn’t sit right with him.

Yugi, Atem, and Joey go to see Aster’s next match. They were planing to go anyway as it is Zane’s first pro-league duel and they want to see one of Jaden’s friends duel. Plus it’s always nice to check out the Pro-league to see who’s coming up.

I think the dueling community in this world has a tiered pro level. The ‘pro-league’ being in the middle. Think like professional football in England (I’ve been watching Ted Lasso) mainly because I don’t think Zane and Aster are at the same level as the DM crew yet. They would be dueling at the top level, we’ll call it the premier league for now. (But let’s be real Kaiba probably named it the Blue-eye’s League, or something like that)

And they watch Zane Lose. Badly. Joey feel bad for the kid. Knowing how he’d feel if his little sister and all of her friends watched him lose his first match on national television. That’s rough.

Atem is not a fan of Aster. The way he talks to his opponent does not sit well with him. Even less so since this is one of Jaden’s friends.

Yugi agrees with both of them. He’s planning to call Jaden after the match to check on him and how his friends are doing after watching that. And he doesn’t want to admit it, but Seto was right. It feels wrong to watch someone else duel with the cards he’s always associated with his son. Especially with the way Aster uses them.

The three are about to leave, Joey suggesting a group call with Jaden, as he misses his littlest buddy, when they hear it. They hear Aster call out Jaden on national television. Saying Jaden copied his deck and a bunch of other nasty things about their boy.

Yugi’s furious, because how dare this boy. He doesn’t even know Jaden. His son has used those cards since they came out. Far before Aster made them popular. But with one interview he’s screwed Jaden’s professional career. If Jaden goes to the pro-league right out of Duel Academy with his hero deck, all anyone will talk about is this interview. He’ll face an up hill battle to prove to everyone he isn’t copying Aster’s deck.

Plus it just isn’t true. Because Jaden loves those cards. He can communicate with their spirits. Something Yugi is pretty sure Aster cannot do.

But Yugi’s trying to keep it together. Because on his right is Atem full of righteous fury and all the holier than though energy that his life as a Pharaoh filled him with. The man’s ready to march down there and challenge Aster to a duel. And on his left is Joey ‘You mess with my friends you mess with me’ Wheeler. Joey who hands have been rated E for everyone since before Yugi and him were even friends. He’s just as likely to march himself down there and punch the kid as he is to duel him.

And as much as Yugi wants to defend his son, his first priority is Jaden’s safety. Because how could we explain why we want to challenge Aster (a 14/15 year old) to a duel? Without revealing our connection to Jaden? Nothing the Kid said should upset them. After all Jaden Yuki has no relation to Yugi Mouto or Seto Kaiba. Jaden doesn’t want people knowing who he is yet, and it’s dangerous to reveal Jaden to the world like that. How many people would try to hurt him to get to Seto? Or Yugi himself?

He’s able to reason with his two rightfully angry companions. He’s just grateful his husband didn’t come. There would have been no stopping Seto from dueling Aster into the ground for daring to say such bold faced lies about their son.

They call Jaden afterwards and he tells them that while he’s sad Zane lost and it kind sucked to have Aster call him a copy cat, he’s still excited to duel Aster again. A hero on hero fight sounds so fun. And Yugi is so proud of his son. How he’s excited to duel and become friends with Aster. Joey rolls his eyes and mutters something about Muto men and befriending rich snobs.

Yugi relaying the call to Seto is the only thing that stops Seto from ruining Aster’s life.

Now on to the main event

Aster comes and challenges Jaden to a duel and this one he wins with his Destiny hero’s. But that’s not all. Jaden can no longer see his cards. He can’t see any card.

He calls his Dad in a panic that night and tells him all about the duel and how he can’t see any cards. Even Winged Kuriboh abandoned him. And he’s in tears because this is his Dad. He can’t let his friends know how bad this is hurting him but his Dad has always been there for him. Has always been his shelter.

And Yugi’s heart breaks. He’s coming. He doesn’t care anymore he’s coming. He tells Jaden to wait it out for a day or two while he gets some things sorted out and then he’ll come get him. (He’s trying to figure out how to quietly pick up Jaden, without a Kaiba-copter) he also doesn’t want Jaden to drop out. They can figure this out together.

He tells the rest of the DM crew and they all want to come, but Yugi doesn’t want to overwhelm Jaden. He’s going to go alone. Seto wants to come to but realizes that his own anger at Aster and the situation won’t help Jaden. The best he can do right now is support Jaden and Yugi. (And dig up all the dirt he can on Aster Phoenix) if Jaden decides to drop out, he’s over hauling the school, he’s got to make those plans as well. The Slifer dorm needs some updates (wait till he finds out Crowler and Bonaparte are trying to tear down Jaden’s dorm.)

But he can’t let Yugi go completely alone. Not when Jaden needs them. So they take the yachts out. (Look me in the eyes and tell me Kaiba doesn’t have a yacht) the DM crew are all aboard. They want to be there for Jaden.

The plan is Yugi will take one of the smaller life boats to duel academy and meet up with Jaden. The two can sail out and have a talk. If Jaden feels better and wants to go back to school great! But if he wants a longer break then they can head back to the yacht and meet up with the rest of the family. Jaden will be surrounded by support while they figure this out.

So Yugi heads out to meet up with Jaden. The pick up goes great. It’s late at night, Jaden sneaks out no problem (something for Yugi to worry over later) and the two head out.

What they aren’t expecting is to get hit by a “falling star” and get transported to the duel spirit world.

Yugi is protective at first. Jaden’s going through it right now. He doesn’t even have his deck! So when they are challenged by the dueling alien-robot thing. Yugi’s ready to kick it to kingdom come for messing with his kid. He’s got a lot of pent up rage at this point from feeling helpless to protect his boy. (He’s still having problems with the fact Jaden fought the Sacred Beasts last year)

But Aquos steps in and tells them it has to be Jaden. And Yugi’s about it to tell this duel spirit to take its opinion and destiny and shove it where the sun don’t shine. He’s been in this rat race to long to be bullied by ‘destiny’ he’s changed it enough times to know it’s not set in stone. He’s protecting his son.

Or he was until Aquos point out the Kaiba Corp Satellite to them. And inside, would you believe it? It’s the cards Jaden made as a kid. The cards Seto sent to space and has been look for like a mad man ever since he and Yugi found out they were Jaden’s cards.

‘So this is why Seto never found them.’ Yugi thinks. ‘That tech of his that got him to the afterlife to battle Atem must have been in these Satellites as well. After all they shot themselves into another dimension. And while he’s trilled that Jaden has those cards again, and he can see them, and Jaden’s smiling again. He can’t help but worry about where Jaden’s other card is. If his deck ended up in this dimension. Where had his spirit protector, Yubel, ended up?

But it’s something to worry about later. Jaden duels the alien robot thing. Yugi knows this is Jaden’s true deck. If anything is going to get him back on his feet it’s this duel. So he encourages his son and supports him through the duel, the same way Yugi’s friends always supported him.

After Jaden wins the two wake up back on their boat. They’re groggy and disoriented, when they hear a voice calling out to them. They look up and the Kaiba Yacht is heading their way. (They all got worried when Yugi didn’t come back)

Jaden gets to spend some time with his family. It helps a lot. His new cards have given him the boost he needed. But it’s even nicer to have his family around. He stays with them for a few days. (Seto sends a message to the school as one Mr. Yuki. Stating that they have picked up their son for a family emergency. No one can say Jaden is skipping class. But the staff does not pass this message on to Jaden’s friends. They think Jaden ran away or is missing)

While he’s away all the other events still happen. He arrives just in time to duel Aster again. Winning with his new deck and convincing Aster that he’s not only strong, but that destiny is crap, and he should join Duel Academy (Téa is so proud of her nephew and the power of friendship he’s using on this lonely little teenager. Aster should be good friends with Jaden and cannon is a coward for not doing more with them after season 2. They’re going to be good friends by season 3 in this au)

I always thought throwing Jaden on a remote part of the island to remove him from the plot was wild. Like I get it and it’s fun, but in this Au he’s having family time and getting to know his new deck.

SEATTLE KRAKEN PLAYER PRIMER

I promised the beautiful @madroxed a Seattle Kraken current player primer so she can get into a West Coast (best coast) NHL team and then I went mad so it ended up too long for ask box without a read more. So here it is for your enjoyment, babe. 🦑

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:

1. When Kraken started playing their first season in 2021, there was a lot of discussion about the expansion plan, how many years they would take to become as successful as other expansion teams (cough VGK). That plan… has not fully panned out. So even though they made it to the playoffs last year, they're not super successful this season and likely won't squeeze their way into a wild card spot. This is okay because the Kraken are full of love.

2. This is important enough to say twice: THE KRAKEN PLAYERS ARE FULL OF LOVE. They don't need to be good if they're having fun and being friends! And they are!

3. Kraken has no captain right now, just four As. Democracy, baby! Every game there is tons of talk on reddit about how it's a good thing because it's made the guys closer, or how it's a bad thing because they don't have a leader and they keep losing. IDK, it's just our thing. There will be a C eventually.

4. There's a joke on tiktok that Kraken is a team of beautiful shy horses, treated badly on their last teams and now learning to love again. Keep this in mind when you see them interacting with Coach Hakstol. They all deserve to have their hooves (skates) farrier-ed gently, ribbons braided into their manes and to be tenderly fed sugar cubes. Anyways.

5. Haha, Seattle runs on love and tentacles.

THE OLDIES:

- Jordan Eberle (Jordy, Ebby, Ebs, Ebber) - Ebs was MY MAN for the longest time because I was soooo fond of him and the mid aughts pre-McDavid Oiler rookie crew. Now he's 33 years old, everyone calls him dad, and just had his 1000th game ceremony. It makes me verklempt.

He just signed a 2-yr contract this month, which people agree is mostly because of his role on the team and less because of his points (which are just okay).

He is also a noted Nickleback fan :(

Also, Jordan Eberle... naked... singing.

- Jared McCann (Canner, also Jordan's on-ice wife) - Kraken's lead scorer right now. Has the saddest backstory ever (he's had troubles with his teams since draft) but the Kraken team loves him. I love him too. Jordan was in his wedding party! Fun fact: Canner is the one who KISSED Ebs' head after an OT win this year, the organization framed & posted the picture, and it's the most romantic thing that has ever happened on Kraken ice. Recognized PC gamer boy. He also wears really really ugly hats with his game day suits.

- Philipp Grubauer (Grubi, The German Gentleman) - Gruuuuu. The more experienced goalie on the team. Noted horse girl (loves horses, there's a video all about his volunteer efforts with them). Gets a lot of undeserved shit from dude fans for being a conservative goalie, the man is NOT gonna move. He straight up close lined a player yesterday because they got too close to his crease lol.

- Vince Dunn - You already know this guy. Feral, but also submissive and breedable. I sent you the "screaming with a bloody face" vid but here's one where he drop gloves for a Matty hit and another from Juniors where he fights OFF ICE. His nickname is Dunner but because he's a pretty princess, he also goes by "Vincess" in hrpf. He's very popular this season both for his looks and his performance this season. Unfortunately injured right now due to a bad hit. Noted "gamer (fornite) boy" lol.

- Adam Larsson - You also know this guy. Big Cat. Quiet but a leader to the D rookies. Surprisingly funny - he's a silent prankster and the custom t-shirts this season with his face on it were a hit. Outside the hrpf space, he's engaged to a beautiful blonde Swede and about to be a dad this month.

- Jaden Schwartz (Schwartzy) - Peak millennial. Is it wrong that I think Schwartzy is the hottest Kraken after Vince? Because I don't care. He gives hot dad, with two dogs with girl names.

He changed his hockey number to match his sister's who died of cancer :'( Has been injured a lot this season and we miss him :'(

- Yanni Gourde (Gourdo) - FERAL!! FRENCH (CANADIAN)!!!! A tiktok star, sassy, charming, and also part of the team leadership.

Married and dad to little girls, who he has allowed Matty to babysit, if you can believe it. There was a super cute vid of them at the pumpkin patch this year. I'm a proud member of the GOURDO IS HOT club but even people with bad eyes and no love for goofy faces love Yanni.

- Andre Burakovsky (Burky) - You might remember him from his Cap or Av days. He's a beautiful little bird who is so good at scoring but so broken. The man has two Stanley Cups but he's played like 2 games for Kraken where he was both healthy & productive lol. People ship him with Gru sometimes in hrpf because they have cute nicknames for each other and also vacation together. He also just had a baby like two months ago so my sisters and I call him a teen mom even though he's like 29, lmaoo.

- Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (Belly) - His shirt is always off in every video I have ever seen him in. Handsome. Beard. French, like literally from France, but we won't hold it against him. He's an older guy who was brought in to help the team with offense (which we badly need).

- Oliver Bjorkstrand (Bjorky) - I always describe Bjorky as like a less handsome Dylan O'Brien if he played hockey. A chill, smiley dude who cares a lot. He played in Portland for the Winterhawks back in Juniors and I saw him a lot there! He's playing super well this year, he even was at the ASG!

THE YOUNG ONES:

- Matty Beniers (Matty, Benny) - OUR BEAUTIFUL FIRST DRAFT EVER. A baby boy. Ebs and Canner are his mom and dad. If you're on tiktok, he made that viral "Yes, Yes, Nope, Nope" sound while mic'd up.

He's growing up :') but also is having kind of a bad season :'( Part of the planned growth of the Kraken team though!

- Will Borgen (Borgy) - One of the baby D. He kinda looks like Canner but more frog. Matty and Borgy are roommates & pretty much BEST FRIENDS during the season. There's a lot of good locker room videos of them giving each other shit. He has also bullied Karts lol. Self describes himself as a little deer.

- Joey Daccord (Joey, Dacs) - Baby goalie. Gives the F1 recaps on tiktok. One of the biggest joys of my year so far was chanting "Joey" in the crowd after his shutout in the Winter Classic. Sometimes he strays too far from the net and makes boo boos. We love & cherish him.

- Kailer Yamamoto (Yamo, Yams, Yammer) - Little man. So little. Great at shootouts & stealing teammate's jerseys. He's the only Washingtonian on the team. Was a Oilers rookie and I've heard he featured in the whole Draisital hrpf narrative thing (idk I'm not an Oilers fan rn lol). Has a terrible goatee right now.

There's a funny af tweet about a reporter seeing a huge cheering section for him at a game and assumed it was friends & family but went over and it was just random people rooting for Yamo purely because he's short.

- Ryker Evans - The newest baby D. Has the deadest eyes you will ever see but he also spent an entire Firebirds youtube interview series just hanging out in a child's pool. He's played great since being called up from the Firebirds and we love him. So new he doesn't have a Breaking the Ice sheet yet :( Also his middle name is GARTH!

- Tye Kartye (Karts) - It's important that you know his last name is pronounced like "Cart-che" but even the announcers say "Car-ti-eh" like the jewelry brand. A quiet-ish sweetheart but also kind of spicy while playing. Rooms with Ryker. They're flirty and have been since the Firebirds. Scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, during the Kraken's first ever playoffs!

- Cale (& Haydn) Fleury - REAL LIFE BROTHERS. Not actually related to Flower. Haydn is on the Lightning now and we miss him. Cale mostly plays for the Firebirds but he's developing well and has gotten called up several times this season.

- Ryan Winterton (Wints) - A goofy little baby. He's still playing mostly with the Firebirds but he had his NHL debut this season.

- Shane Wright - I don't actually know his nickname. (EDIT: I have been informed it is Shaner or Wrighter!) Big boy. Our SECOND DRAFT EVER. Playing with the minor leagues right now. We'll see him playing a line on Kraken next season or so, probably (?). If Coach Dave is willing.

THE OTHERS (THAT I OFTEN FORGET ABOUT):

- Brandon Tanev - Turbo. He's fast. Has beautiful long hair. Keeps getting hit by pucks because he's in the way. Fun fact: he helped start the 'Kraken are horses' thing because there was a video on Tiktok where an equipment manager was adjusting his skates and they used a hoof care video sound and it went viral. We might lose him when he's a free agent and that's fine.

- Jamie Oleksiak - Big Rig, Riggy. In my shit list right now because he's playing bad and I hate his stupid credit card commercial that they always play during games. Member of the 'my sister is prettier and a better athlete than me' club. People speculate there's a chance we might lose him over the summer when his no-trade clause opens up as well. He's often Borgy's d-partner, and he and Borgy are very very sweet though.

- Tomas Tatar - Tuna, he's fun and nice. I like his accent. Sometimes I forget he exists.

- Eeli Tolvanen - Tolvy. I also sometimes forget about him. Sorry. He's a buddy to everyone on the team though.

Takes place around, hm, 2011 or so

Cannot stress enough that the Duel Spirits are still there and everyone still plays duel monsters, there’s just no fancy holograms. It’s just card games on beat up coffee tables and dorm lobby floors.

Jaden (undetermined major) and Syrus (engineering major) are dormmates turned roommates in the cheapest most dogshit apartment imaginable (that they still perpetually need a third person on the lease to keep affordable)

Past third roommates include Chumley (art major, moved out after landing a kickass Industrial Illusion gig like in canon), Hasselberry (geology major, was technically NOT on the lease but paid rent anyway, moved out to be closer to campus), and Chazz (business major who wants to be a theater major so badly, was dating Jaden at the time, moved out after they broke up and that was a whole To-Do). The current third roommate spot is up in the air but it’s looking like Jesse (geology major as well, biology minor) might be our lucky winner

i kind of just like the concept of college aged Jaden having a small handful of breakups under his belt i love the guy but i feel like at least for a while he’d be a bit of a flaky boyfriend. doofus (affectionate). I think he also dated Bastion (chemistry major) here and it kind of crashed and burned

yubel is Very There and that might be part of the issue. They and Winged Kuriboh hanging around the apartment absolutely not paying rent and watching Jaden make bad decisions like stay up until 4am playing minecraft the day before midterms.

Zane (computer science major) was Mr. Star Student when he went to the same college a few years ago and now syrus has professors ask if he’s zane’s brother and then ask how zane is doing and syrus doesn’t have the heart to tell them that his brother mostly just goes to cybergoth warehouse raves now. :/

i have no idea what Aster is majoring in. Probably something non-consequential because he’s still doing “pro dueling circuits” (playing in tournaments at the local convention center every few months). Anyway he’s also a Redditor this is true for all asters imo but especially this one.

    You took a deep breath right after asking for the track to be played again. To everyone else the track was perfect, but it was different for you. It just felt like something was missing and you didn't know what. And god, you were tired. You were so genuinely exhausted that if you sit up in a chair and stay silent for more than five minutes you'll simply fall asleep. You felt your eyes heaving at every blink of yours and it was only 5 pm, but you were in this studio for so long. You were inside this place for 36 hours now with no shower and no sleep. You did eat but now you were hungry again.Your shoulders were tensed up, and you couldn't feel comfortable anywhere. Not in the couch, not in the chair, not in the floor and not even stand up. All you genuinely demanded right now was to be home under your bed sheets curled up with your boyfriend of four years while taking many naps or watching many movies, but no, you needed to have this done. You needed the album to be done and were extremely thrilled to release it to your fans that were excited as well. But yes, you were so frickin' tired.

— Again... — You repeated after a long and sharp breath listening to some groans from your coworkers. You all have been listening to this one song for about an hour and a half now and you haven't actually changed anything yet. — I know, I know, and I'm sorry guys, it's just not right!

— Maybe you think it's not right, but it is and you're just making a huge deal about it. — One of your co-workers said. A girl, Lucy, one of your friends as well. You turned your head to stare at her face and gave her that glaze that made her shrug her shoulders because of it — Alright, I'm sorry.

— I'm not making a huge deal. It's just not right, and I feel like the entire album is so great and this is just wrong. Like... — You said standing up from the couch you were sitten in and walked to the table with the computers on to grab the one paper you used to write this song. You stared at it in your hands for a while as you read the letters. — See, here is the problem. So here it's "you drink it just like water" and then suddenly comes "so what you doin' tonight?", it doesn't make sense, there's something missing in here. — You go through the lyrics again as you hear more groans from the people in the room — And honestly, I'm disappointed with myself for the rest. I need to change it so badly, but I have no idea on how.

— No problem, love — You naturally said referring to his previous apologies.

   That's when you hear the sound of the door being opened. You rise your head to look at the door and see Harry, your boyfriend, walking into the room with some paper bags in his hands that contained burgers directly from In-N-Out, which was in fact your favorite Los Angeles burger place ever. He arrived in silence, trying not to make a noise for fear that you were recording something but you could note his surprised expression when he saw everyone was looking at him instead of recording.

— Sorry guys, I didn't want to disturb you. I was passing by and wanted to check up! — Harry said as he closed the door behind him and walked farther into the room. You smiled tenderly when you saw the figure of the man walking closer to you. You haven't seen each other personally in some days, and he consistently secured you so much spiritual peace, he just had such a light energy and it made you feel so good  — And also y’all had been stealing my girl for so long now! — He joked getting a slight laugh from everyone inside the studio. He approached you by wrapping your waist with one of his arms around your waist and sealing your lips together as he bends down a little.

— And Harry, technically she is maintaining us here and not the other way around — Lucy said in an ironic tone causing you to look at her quickly before letting out a deep breath and lowering your head by rubbing your sleepless eyes with the help of your hands, probably a negative result of sleep. Harry reflected the girl's words and then looked at you carefully before placing the bags on the coffee table that was next to the studio sofa.

— Why? What happened? — Harry asked encountering his gaze with yours as he crossed his arms and observed you raising your hand that contained the papers with the lyrics of your new song.

— I can't write a proper ending that I genuinely like! — You said, sounding frustrated to everyone in that room.

— The ending is good! — Another of your friends, Jaden, said as he got up and picked up one of the bags Harry had brought and then started walking again to sit on the sofa.

— Jaden, you in silence is everything to me! — You said in a mocking tone while running your hand through your hair — But you understand, don't you? — You asked Harry because he has experience with such a specific subject — It's not that it's bad, it's that I don't feel like it's ready!

— I get it! But have you already recorded? — Harry asked softly in his understanding tone. He more than anyone in this room comprehended exactly what you were feeling and he would do his best to help you since you did the same with him so many times before.

— Yes, twenty times! — Jaden murmured a little before taking a bite of one of the burgers that Harry had brought. Harry couldn't hold back the laugh when he heard the boy, as they knew each other well and Harry knew all his sassiness was based on nothing more than hunger.

— Let me hear it, so I can have some ideas to help! — Harry said looking at you, and then noticing your reaction. Your eyes widened at the man's request. It wasn't fear. It was just an apprehension and that made Harry extremely curious  — What? 

— Well... It's a little... — You said in a lower tone seeking your words.

— Promiscuous and indulgent! — Lucy and Jaden completed your sentence making Harry look at her and the boy sitting on the sofa and then Harry raised one of his eyebrows and looked at you with a smirk on his lips.

— Uh, is it about me? — Harry asked in a mocking tone, waiting for the answer that would raise his ego, of course.

— Look, let's not specify anything — You said quickly and nervously looking at the smirk on your boyfriend's face — Ok, Trevor, play the song right for the love of god! — You said getting a laugh out of Harry, Jaden and Lucy due to your despair in ending this matter.

    And Trevor did as you asked and put the song on. You sat down on the bench near the wall and crossed your arms while watching Harry's reactions. The soon as the song started everyone could notice your voice and the rhythm of it that matched the beat.

Honestly, Harry’s opinion about your music is extremely important to you because you cherish and admire him way too much and love his songs so you hope that he does too with yours.

WHG Prompt 6 Holt

It was the second day of training, the day after Skylar and I approached Jaden and Absolon. After we had talked to them, Skylar had pulled me to all of the survival stations, and we had studied them.

Skylar had already told me that today, we were really going to play up being in love. I just flushed thinking about it. This was going to be a little embarrassing, wouldn’t it?

When I got down to the training hall, Skylar was already there, and they grinned when they saw me. They walked up to me and pushed past my arm to snuggle up right next to me. I already started flushing, but my arm automatically wrapped around their shoulders. This just felt right.

We went to the survival stations again, but even as we were studying, I could feel people’s eyes on us, and I couldn’t stop myself from continuing to flush.

After we were done with half of the stations, Skylar steered me toward one of the walls (of course in full view of the Gamemakers who were watching over all of us) and caressed my cheek. I sighed even as my face grew hotter. Figures it was the Hunger Games that allowed us to actually be open about our feelings. But had I said it out loud to them?

Before they could kiss me, I leaned close to whisper in their ear. “I love you, Skylar, and I want to protect you in the arena. Please, let me.”

I moved back a little, and a smile tugged at my lips when I saw that they were flushing now too. They shook their head. “You dummy. I’m the one who’s going to protect you.”

“Maybe we can both protect each other.” Before they could try to snark back, I kissed them, and they melted into my arms. Even if it meant that I would die in the end, I would protect them no matter what.

After lunch, Peacekeepers showed up, escorting a boy who looked pretty beaten up. I frowned and finally placed a name to the face. The other Skyler. The one who tried to escape when his name was called. This must have been so horrible for him.

The Peacekeepers moved away from him, but they stayed near the exits, and their eyes followed him everywhere. He was wandering over to the survival stations.

Skylar grinned. “I’m gonna go talk to him! And you’re coming with me!” They grabbed my arm and dragged me over to him.

He tensed and glared at us with wary eyes as Skylar kept grinning. I just looked away from him. I didn’t want to intimidate him. He frowned. “What do you want?”

Skylar held out their hand for him to shake. “My name is Skylar! I’m non-binary, so please call me by they/them pronouns! And your name is also Skyler! It’s nice to meet you! I have a proposal!”

He completely ignored their outstretched hand. “Who cares? We’re all dead anyway.”

Skylar glanced at me, and I could inexplicably read their expression. See? This is how you look when you’re such a spoilsport. I just made a face back at them.

They looked back at him with a grin. “Yeah, that’s true. At least with that attitude. But from a different perspective, we’re all allies against the insidious machinations of the “illustrious Capitol”. If you want to get out so badly, why not join us? We’ve now got two master hackers, and we’re going to pull a heist against the Capitol. At least a subtle one. I’ll figure out how to get us out once we’ve had our fun.”

I forced myself to keep my expression neutral, but I didn’t get it. Why wasn’t Skylar telling anyone about their magic? Couldn’t they get us out easily? Was there something they were worried about with using their magic?

Skyler actually looked like he was considering it. Before he could say anything, however, Skylar held up a hand. “Think about it. I don’t need your response now. I’ll find you in the arena, and then you can give me your response. Good luck out there!”

They walked away, and I followed them. I frowned at them. “Why aren’t you telling anyone about your magic? Would it be too hard for you to get us out?”

They shook their head, the smile falling from their lips. They actually looked serious. “If I do anything obviously rebellious, that will endanger my family. The Capitol is not kind to anyone who blatantly defies them. I don’t want to do that until it is necessary. I’ll figure something out.”

I nodded. “But I could help you.”

They shook their head, and their smirk was back on their lips. “Nah. It’s my problem. You’re doing great right now.”

That night, I sat near a window, staring out at the Capitol below me. What could I do to help Skylar? I hissed and closed my eyes. I couldn’t figure anything out, and I had been trying to think the whole time. Could I distract myself?

I didn’t have a token for the arena. Could I take something from an alternate reality and use that? I squeezed my eyes shut and thought of taking something that could be used as a token. When something appeared in my hand, I looked down at it and frowned.

It was a pin, and it had a Mockingjay on it. Another reality had Mockingjays too?

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes again. I had to read the pin’s memories. A girl had this pin, a girl who volunteered to save her sister. She went through so much pain in the arena, but she was able to save the person she loved. But then she had to go back into the arena the next year. Pain. Suffering. Anger. Sadness.

I opened my eyes as tears streaked down my cheeks. This pin had such a sad history. But it had been a symbol of hope too. Hopefully, it could give us hope in the arena too.

Jaden and Chazz had been waiting for this moment. After Aurora and Rosalie the two planned on having a child to share as well. Luck didn’t seem on their side but after a year of struggle they succeed.

Any moment now they would meet their son. But Jaden knew that only Chazz would get to hold him.

Yubel warned him bringing Damien into the world would be his end. But Jaden didn’t care. However now he could slowly feel his body giving out as he’s wheeled into the hospital Jaden knew he had to do something.

“Ch-Chazz! Ngh… listen to me… you have to promise me that you’ll do whatever it takes for Damien to be safe… hah… even if it means letting me go… ah!!”

“I’m running out of time…” He squeezed his hand “you have to do whatever it takes… save Damien… even if my heart gives out…”

(( This might be a lot. Like a lot. Idk, maybe I wrote it really badly and it’s just so bad it’s funny, but I need to warn anyone who isn’t involved to not read unless you’re sure you’re ok with the tags. ))

... He didn’t really know how he was supposed or expected to react, frankly. The one reasonable explanation was that this was nothing but a lie and would just... pass. No consequences. Of course he knew that death was a very real thing- obviously. But it was also something that simply didn’t- couldn’t happen to people he actually knew and definitely not to Jaden out of everyone. They’d been so close to dying and disappearing so many times, but it had never happened. Of course it hadn’t, because it simply couldn’t. Things like the death of a loved one, they belonged in the retelling of a sad old man’s life, in books, in movies, in crime documentaries, in news broadcasts. They weren’t things that just happened. 

All he could do was look at Jaden helplessly as he gasped in pain while contorting on the hospital bed. If nothing Chazz could do would help stop that suffering, what was the point in doing anything, really? Would speaking be of any use at all?  ... No.  Obviously not. Because this wasn’t true. Jaden was exaggerating and he’d wake up just fine. He was in pain from overexertion and he simply needed to rest. Why Bastion and Jesse had been asked to stay outside for the time being was clear to him, too: don’t overwhelm the patient. He’d been the one to go in because he was the one directly affected in this situation. 

He was vaguely aware of the shifting of the doctors around the room. He was asked to leave, so he did. And that was the end of it. He hadn’t spoken a single word to Jaden, or anyone for that matter. Not even Bastion or Jesse. He’d nodded at the doctors and went back to sit in the waiting room. He’d be called back in soon enough, anyways. It was a matter of time.

Except it wasn’t. And time simply passed and slipped by, as it always did. The wake and funeral just... happened. Chazz was there, of course. He thought he might have cried, too. He couldn’t bee too sure, honestly. He probably did. He should have, certainly. He must have. What kind of person wouldn’t cry for the death of their husband?  The child had been left with Alexis, who’d refused to attend, understandably. They needed someone reliable anyways. It ended up being a good thing. And who cared, anyways? It was a funeral. Literally the single most useless thing on the planet. Did Jaden’s parents even show up? Did Jaden have parents? Good fucking question. Not like he needed to ask himself. He’d ask Jaden, of course. As soon as he’d be back. Because he would. Of fucking course. Because Jaden wasn’t that much of an idiot, he obviously hadn’t just decided for everyone that it would be fine if he just died. The fact that Jesse and Bastion believed that was absolutely appalling.  Like it was even an option they could take into account. Jaden had chosen to die so that a child could live? Why. What even was the point of that? It made no sense. Yubel wouldn’t have allowed it. But Yubel must have known.  Their fault, then? Had they tried to get revenge on Jaden yet again? Too bad the bastard didn’t know how to stay dead. 

A month passed. And Jaden hadn’t come home. Well. It had taken him some time to come back from the alternate dimension, too, it was nothing weird. Chazz visited the grave a few times with Jesse and Bastion, reluctantly. Why visit an empty grave? Once he found himself standing over the tombstone, however, he ended up having to be dragged away. It had only been a few minutes, he couldn’t fathom why they had dragged him to a cemetery only to forcibly remove him from it when they got there. Well, whatever. He was tired and had a headache. He wanted to go home. ... Did he? No. The children were at home, with Atticus. And he didn’t want to see them.

A year. He’d been dragged away against his will yet again. Jesse and Bastion were fussing over him uselessly, like they had started to do since it had happened. Which was... a year before? Didn’t seem like it. It might as well have been a day or two. The situation had remained the same. Chazz had waited patiently in the hopes that the one to open the door would, for once, not be Atticus. ... That’s right, why would Jaden come to look for him at Atticus’?  Ah, well, Jesse and Bastion would tell him, as soon as he got home. That they couldn’t stand him anymore and had hauled him off to someone else’s place. Or had he asked to stay there himself? The thought of ‘home’ did sicken him. It was there and Chazz couldn’t bear the sight of it, as easy as that. Or the sight of himself. But it had always been that way, hadn’t it?  Did he hate the child?  He wasn’t sure. Maybe he just hated that it looked like him. Maybe he just despised the fact that it was little more than a murder tool. Who knew. He didn’t and didn’t want to think about it. He’d made no promises to Jaden and he had nothing to uphold or to lose. Just a lot of useless things to deal with. Like a child who shouldn’t have been born. Then again, it hadn’t asked for it, had it? No. More than the child, the one deserving of hatred was himself, of course. Why hate the kid. It just existed. Chazz could tolerate that. As long as it stayed away from him and out of his sight. Jesse and Bastion could fucking deal with it. One child in exchange for another. One out, one in. No changes there.

Atticus started worrying, too, at some point. He would ask where the Chazz Princeton he’d known had gone.  Good fucking question.

I’m standing in a piteous rain, in front of an auto garage on Flushing Avenue, staring across the street at a line of people that stretches back at least two full avenues. The mechanics standing behind me are idly curious: “What the hell is going on over there?”

I kind of think that if I started to try to explain it, I’d grow old and die on this street corner.

Hypefest, which takes place the same weekend as the New Yorker Festival and New York Comic Con, is a two-day streetwear celebration featuring art, music, food, and, of course, shopping. Hosted throughout several large, vaguely fish-scented buildings in the currently hip Brooklyn Navy Yard, it’s the first large-scale festival organized by the Hong Kong-based media and e-commerce giant Hypebeast, founded by Kevin Ma in 2005. And it’s an answer to ComplexCon, the glorified mall and music festival hosted by the “youth culture” media monolith Complex in Long Beach, California, every November.

Both celebrate the ever-growing online “hype” culture around anything exciting — Elon Musk and the modern commercial space race; basketball sneakers and a handful of famous men in hip-hop; startup streetwear brands and the legendary fashion houses that embrace them. Surprise and unlikeliness are key, which is why this crew loves loose-cannon tech CEOs as much as they love Kanye West, and also as much as they love bizarre collaborations like Balenciaga and Crocs or Louis Vuitton and Supreme.

Hypefest was barely announced, save for some Instagram posts last month and an 800-word New York Times preview titled “If you hype it, will they come?” Tickets weren’t made available until three weeks in advance, at which time Ma wrote on his Instagram, “Culture and learning shouldn’t have a price attached to it. I will personally cover the cost of tickets to make Hypefest a free experience for all.”

He gave out 10,000 free tickets in a matter of minutes.

The location of the festival was kept a secret until two days before, at which time it was announced only to ticket holders. The requisite Hypefest app, also usable only to ticket holders, hosted an elaborate digital store, which was the only way to buy anything you saw at the event. There was no cash allowed — even food trucks and the several enormous Ciroc stations weren’t permitted to take anything but credit cards or Apple Pay.

All these measures seem dramatic but were presumably necessary, given that the culture we’re talking about is one literally named for its excess energy and known for ambitious, flagrantly ridiculous resale scams. Also its high percentage of young male fans.

Of the many things available for sale at Hypefest, a $1,700 suitcase is the most coveted. It’s making an exclusive debut at the festival, and it’s the reason many of these people got out of bed this morning.

For example: Axel, 15, and Chris, 14, a pair of incredibly polite friends who drove up from Washington, DC, with their parents. They are wearing Comme des Garçons Nikes and 2011 Jordan 1s, respectively; they tell me they came to Hypefest for the experience, and to buy two of the suitcases.

Other stuff sells out — notably, freeze-dried flowers preserved in glass blocks by Japanese artist Azuma Makoto (ranging from $260 to $600), and tactical vests from Pharrell Williams’s Billionaire Boys Club, which go for $1,100 each. But it’s the suitcase, a collaboration between Off-White (the Italian brand founded by Kanye West creative director Virgil Abloh) and Rimowa (a fancy German luggage company, majority-owned by LVMH), that’s the talk of the party.

The suitcase sells out immediately, but no worries — every couple of hours, it gets restocked, which festivalgoers are alerted to by a push notification. Each time, it sells out again about two minutes later. This happens at least five times.

Before I asked if I could go to Hypefest, I told my editor, “I think I love the hypebeasts. At least they’re getting excited. At least someone’s having an adrenaline rush.” If that’s true, it must be a behind-the-computer state of play. Everyone in line for the first round of shuttle buses to the navy yard on Saturday looks like they’d rather chew gravel than smile. (The buses are also effectively crowd control, serving no real crucial transportation purpose, as each group travels about 800 feet in them and there are no return buses.)

My first order of business upon disembarking the “shuttle bus” is not buying a $1,700 suitcase, but waiting in a small corral in order to meet the extremely famous young person Jaden Smith, who is announcing a denim line made in collaboration with the Dutch brand G-Star. Standing in the corral for 40 minutes, I am not permitted to leave to go to the bathroom, but I am permitted to look around my immediate vicinity.

Everybody is tall and wearing all black, except a baby wearing a camouflage Bape hoodie. Lots of people are pausing to take a picture of the back of a bald guy’s neck as he peruses Lacoste polos — probably because he has a tattoo there, of a pair of eyes, that looks suspiciously similar to Zayn Malik’s tattoo of Gigi Hadid’s eyes. All clothes are designer, unless they’re Scarface T-shirts or hoodies from the famed Atlanta strip club Magic City. It doesn’t immediately seem like anyone’s that cool, but I can concede they’re all cooler than me.

A fashion reporter, also stationed in the corral, looks down at my chunky white sneakers — relatively new but already slightly scuffed, modeled extremely vaguely after the current trend of designing shoes to look like swollen lips — and asks, “So what are those?”

“They’re from Target!” I say, throwing my arms wide like I’m Betty Draper about to show off a serving tray of Heineken. I hope it will be funnier than it is.

Ten minutes later, Jaden Smith — son of Will Smith, star of Netflix’s Neo Yokio, general presence in hip-hop — arrives to introduce his denim collection wearing what I can only guess is about 50 pounds of (mostly denim) clothing. Denim jacket, denim pants. He has both a fanny pack and a tactical vest, and though I can’t really get close enough to see, it seems like he’s not using all this storage space for anything in particular.

Outside our admittedly not-very-private corral, dozens of teens and 20-somethings press in and reach for his hand. Smith gives it. He smiles a glittery famous person smile. “We got floating mannequins inside; it’s gonna be awesome,” he tells the general air, seeming genuinely friendly and enthused, bouncing either because he is happy or because that is how you have to move if you are a tiny boy-wire inside enough fabric to cover a grizzly bear.

He leads us into a conical structure I am hoping is not actually supposed to be a teepee and points up at three headless mannequins, suspended by invisible cords. They are wearing denim. The denim, it is explained, is sustainable. Some of it is undyed; some of it is dyed with indigo that doesn’t use salt; all of it uses less water than other denim.

“We have floating mannequins that are flying, because we want them to fly,” Smith explains. “G-Star clothes give you superpowers.” He turns to someone from G-Star and says, “The floating’s great. The floating’s great.” He explains that sustainability is important to him, and I believe him. I look at him for a few minutes longer than I feel I want to, because it just seems like what you should do if there’s a celebrity a few feet away and he’s thanked you for coming.

After I’ve touched raw denim, I wander outside, past the main stage where about two dozen boys are attempting to mosh to a DJ playing the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” and talk to a man waiting in line for empanadas. He points suddenly to my chest and says, “What is that?” That is a 3-inch-tall teddy bear holding an orange leaf. I remember that I bought it for 50 cents at the flea market in Avon, New York, last weekend, and that I pinned to the lapel of my stained Topshop jacket more or less as a joke.

“So you’d be making a 10,000 percent profit if you sold it to me right now for $5?” the man says. I think he’s joking, so I laugh, and then he says he’ll also buy me an empanada. I say something weird about how I’m “just getting acquainted” with my bear, I’ve only had him for one week, I don’t know if I need $5 that badly. “I mean, I know I’m a journalist, but it’s not that dire today,” I tell him, and he says the empanadas are really good. His friend, who is wearing an Endxiety hat reading “Our Lord & Savior Elon Musk,” tells him to please give up, I’m not parting with it.

It will take me close to 48 hours to realize that I wrote the man’s name down wrong and he’s Rhuigi Villaseñor, the 26-year-old owner of Rhude, an (extremely expensive!) LA streetwear label best known for the fact that Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and LeBron James wear it.

Anyway, he is really nice. He’s here to help launch a new sneaker with Puma. He tells me, “It’s great for the culture to be social, because it’s an Instagram world. It’s good for kids to be socializing who are, in one way or another, a little awkward.” I say, “Do you think they’re socializing?”

He says, “No.”

It’s sort of a rhetorical question, as I can already see that they mostly aren’t. The thing about an event designed to educate you about expensive goods, I reason, is that the expensive goods are the education in and of themselves. You don’t need to hear explanations of them. You don’t need to hear outside opinions. A pair of sneakers being sold for $350 is worth $350, and probably more once there aren’t any left. I’m happy enough with this explanation — who doesn’t want a hobby that’s as simple as arithmetic and supply and demand?

Hypefest is a beautiful mall, essentially two dozen Instagram-ready stations for brands that don’t often appear outside of Instagram. Everybody is a walking price tag, and doing the math is as easy as a Google search on the free, ubiquitous wifi. The air is thick with humidity and money: Women wear ground-length Opening Ceremony raincoats, Prada fanny packs, Helmut Lang sweatshirts, Balenciaga sneakers, and vintage Apple employee jackets that go for around $400 on eBay. Men are in Off-White Nikes with the tags still on, Supreme hoodies, Anti-Social Social Club windbreakers, and Advisory Board Crystals beanies that are about $200 each on the popular resale app Grailed.

Jake Woloshin, 23, is wearing Ava Nirui’s Marc Jacobs hoodie (advertised as an “official bootleg,” which … okay), which means he is currently wearing $125 on his torso. But he tells me he couldn’t resist the new Heron Preston hoodies he saw today, so he picked one up; tomorrow, his torso will be worth $475.

As for his feet, they’re in relatively modest Timberlands, and he tells me he’s glad he’s not wearing the same Travis Scott Air Jordan 4s everyone else is wearing. This is a point reiterated by nearly everyone I speak to. They are mortified by the amount of Travis Scott merch. “You’d think he was performing,” says a New Jersey podcast host, smiling kind of, but mostly rolling his eyes.

I have a lot of time to wander around, as I can’t get drunk and I can’t buy anything and I can’t even really merit anyone’s attention because good lord, look at my outfit.

I wander past a car completely covered in packets of $100 bills, which is apparently an ad for a hotel in Los Angeles. I pass the Marc Jacobs booth, which is advertising a collaboration with Instagram artist @Hey_Reilly by giving out surgical masks with teeth printed on the front, with “Marc Jacobs” printed on the teeth. They’re really scary, and I don’t like them. I stop into a booth stylized to look like a convenience store (T-shirts sold in soda bottles, hoodies sold in chip bags); it belongs to the Japanese brand Conveni, which has never been to New York before. I like that one; they’re selling bandanas in triangular sandwich packaging, and the owner is kind enough to offer me a snack.

Back outside, Charlie Mejia, a 19-year-old New Yorker who came to Hypefest by himself, tells me he came specifically to buy a Pikachu sweatshirt designed by a brand called Fragment, which typically stylizes its name as “.” It sold out, so he bought a limited-edition calendar designed by manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo, and is mostly looking forward to a talk called “The Female Is Present,” hosted by Sporty and Rich founder Emily Oberg and Kendrick Lamar stylist Aleali May.

“I really want to hear women’s thoughts,” he tells me. “We don’t hear their perspectives as much.”

I run into a kid named Aidan Parker, who is wearing a black denim jacket designed by Nick Holiday, the creator of the hip-hop collective Brockhampton’s early merch. I’m happy to recognize something, and ask Parker to tell me about his day and his thoughts on the Brockhampton sexual misconduct scandal, which he calls simply “uh, crazy.” He’s there with his friend A.J. Nurse, who is on the phone trying to coordinate with the rest of their friends. They run a group chat called The Stoop, sourced from the subreddit r/streetwear, made up of more than 50 people ages 16 to 34, who first met up in Union Square in June 2016. They hang out in SoHo; they are here to buy $1,700 suitcases.

There are so many boys like them — expected, and at the same time hyperreal because of how expected they are. It’s nice, I guess, that they are friends who met online.

There are also VIPs hanging out in a secluded plastic garden, and a yacht you can sign up to stand on. There’s a huge Adidas station where you can design your own shirts and sneakers or watch someone named Jack the Ripper put together shoes inside a glass box for hours on end. There is an adorable 4-year-old in a high-visibility-workwear yellow baseball cap, sucking his thumb. There is a slightly younger child waddling around all day in a full Adidas tracksuit, and I am obligated to write down that even the toddlers at Hypefest are rich and beautiful.

There is a teenager in Balenciaga’s Triple S sneakers and a UPenn baseball cap who drops, with zero warning, to his knees, in front of an unexplained covered wagon. I don’t think anyone took his picture.

What I love about Hypefest is that even an untrained eye like mine can pick out a logo and look up how much something cost. The barrier to access for this event was just proximity to it, and the barrier to access for a community in which shopping becomes an art form in itself is just money — a lot of it.

When I sit down and force myself to find something redeeming about it all, it is the same thing that redeems anything noxious: The people are nice when addressed directly. The attendees imagined that the culture they love on the internet might represent community in real life, and for a handful of them, maybe it does — if you put your face in front of someone, they will mostly respond with warmth.

These are just people, like me, here to buy something that will make them feel better, or, barring that, to look at things they can’t afford, which will make them feel like they have a reason to try harder. All we can really dream of in America is a chance to buy something that will change our lives.

Also, for no obvious reason and with no explanation: Travis Scott did show up at Hypefest on Sunday afternoon. Sometimes faith is rewarded.

Ramblings: Better Late Than Never (Dec 6)

The title of the Wednesday Ramblings is in reference to a goalie who finally earned the first shutout of his career and to a team whose defense finally scored its first goal of the season. Or maybe even to the very late hour that I am posting this.

I’ve written about Brayden Schenn numerous times this season, and I will be mentioning him again here. Schenn recorded a hat trick with a goal in each period in the Blues’ 4-3 win in Montreal. Considering what Schenn has provided to fantasy teams since his trade to St. Louis, it’s hard to believe that he entered this game with a five-game pointless drought. Over that stretch he still managed to take 11 shots on goal, nine hits, and six penalty minutes, so he’s filling your stocking even when he isn’t scoring.   

Linemate Jaden Schwartz assisted on two of Schenn’s goals, breaking his own three-game slump without a point. In case you hadn’t noticed, Vladimir Tarasenko has been pulled off this line (lines below from Tuesday).

The Tank has just one point in his last four games and no goals in his last six. Considering the absolute roll that this line was on, maybe it’s inevitable that the scoring has cooled off a bit.

In a losing cause for the Habs, Shea Weber scored two goals on six shots on goal. If you add in his assist from Saturday’s game, Weber has three points in the two games since he has returned from a lower-body injury. Check out the curve on Weber’s first goal.

Kyle Turris continues to produce, adding another two points in the Predators’ 5-2 win over Dallas. I know I mentioned the Turris/Duchene trade yesterday, but here’s another update.

Linemate Craig Smith was held off the scoresheet, though. I mentioned Smith yesterday as a potential waiver-wire pickup, but I’ll add in a point made by Brennan in his most recent Lining Up. Smith currently holds a shooting percentage of nearly 17%, which is nearly double his career percentage of 9.6%. Still, I might add him anyway, considering that he has found instant chemistry with the newly acquired Turris. His icetime and power-play time have also increased over last season, so his stock has undoubtedly increased.

Backup Juuse Saros had an impressive game for the Preds, stopping 43 of 45 shots that he faced. Saros struggled over his first five games of the season and was even demoted to the AHL for a time. I’ll assume that he has turned the corner, so I’d still consider him for streaming starts given his impressive 2016-17 (2.35 GAA, .923 SV%).

Ben Bishop wasn’t so impressive at the other end, getting pulled in the second period after allowing three goals on 15 shots. Bishop reeled off four consecutive victories prior to this start, but his numbers have still been up and down in his first season in Dallas.

Yanni Gourde scored two goals in 1:34 late in the second period of the Lightning’s 6-2 win over the Islanders. Gourde had gone six games without a point, but he is within the top 10 in rookie scoring with 18 points (8g-10a) and a plus-12 in 27 games. Gourde’s 17% shooting accuracy could mean that he is due for some kind of regression, but he has emerged as a true sleeper for a Bolts’ team that scores at will, leading the league with 3.7 goals per game.

The Sabres needed a win badly and got one on Tuesday against Colorado. They also needed a goal from a defenseman, for which they had none from before this game. Jake McCabe took care of that, along with an assist, a plus-2, four hits, and five blocked shots. So if you’re keeping track, that means that Rasmus Ristolainen, Marco Scandella, and Nathan Beaulieu all have yet to score a goal this season.

Ristolainen was given all the time in the world to break that slump in this game, logging just over 30 minutes. Given how porous the Sabres’ defense has been (league-worst 3.44 GA/GP), I can see why. Ristolainen has been finding other reasons to stay in your fantasy lineup, including a plus-4 on Tuesday and nine shots over his last two games.

Can we call it a breakout season for Nathan MacKinnon yet? With two power-play goals on Tuesday, MacKinnon is up to 10 goals and 31 points in just 26 games. I can think of two separate instances in which I had MacKinnon queued up to pick at around 140th-150th overall in a fantasy draft, only to see him grabbed just a few picks before me. If only I picked him one round sooner.

Ondrej Pavelec is one goalie I make a habit of staying away from, but he was worth it on Tuesday if your league counts saves. Filling in for the ill Henrik Lundqvist, Pavelec stopped 41 of 44 shots in the Rangers’ 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. If you look at career records against a team, Pavelec might have been on the bottom of your list. Lifetime against the Penguins, Pavelec was 2-13-1 with a 4.20 GAA and .870 SV% entering this game. I’m guessing that a few of those starts were as an Atlanta Thrasher.  

Injury alert from that game: Justin Schultz left Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury.

This was the wrong game for me to bench Gustav Nyquist (a two-game week for the Wings was the main reason I made that choice). Nyquist scored two goals and added an assist with a plus-4 in a 5-1 win over the red-hot Jets. Nyquist had not hit the twine in his previous eight games, so no doubt some of you did the same.

I traded for Nyquist earlier this season thinking ahead to my fantasy playoffs. (Should I make them, of course. I don’t like to piss off the fantasy hockey gods.) Like this season, Nyquist posted modest numbers throughout much of last season, then cranked it up a notch in March and April with 19 points in 20 games. With a 5on5 SH% of 6.67%, Nyquist is identified as a great buy-low candidate in his Dobber player profile. Nyquist’s line with Anthony Mantha and Henrik Zetterberg was mentioned as a cold line in this week’s Lining Up, so now might be a great time.

Yes, this was a thing during the third period of the Kings/Wild game. Marian Gaborik scored two goals in the third period, both assisted by Anze Kopitar. Gabby now has four goals and a plus-7 in just seven games, which would mean that he could have some residual fantasy value should he somehow stick with Kopitar. He’s probably available in your league, no less. Ride him until the next injury, which is probably just around the corner.

The Canucks don’t suck as much as you thought they would. On Tuesday they were led by a couple of former top prospects that you may have once had stored away.

Jacob Markstrom stopped all 30 shots he faced to earn – get this – his first career shutout in 129 career games. If you follow the Canucks, you’ll already know that he nearly had one in his previous game against the Leafs, only to lose it with just under three minutes left in the game. Somewhere, Pokey Reddick weeps. The tweet was from after Saturday's game.

Considering that Canucks’ goaltending was an afterthought in many fantasy drafts, you may be surprised to learn that the Canucks currently sit in the top third of the league in team goals-against average (2.78). I actually heard someone here in the Vancouver area recently mention Canucks’ goalies and the Jennings Trophy in the same sentence. Don’t worry, it wasn’t me.

Derrick Pouliot scored a goal and added two assists with a plus-2 in over 20 minutes of icetime and power-play time. He’d been held without a point in his previous five games, but he hasn’t looked bad overall. It’s possible that Pouliot is the odd man out once Erik Gudbranson returns, but it always seems as though there’s injuries on the Canucks’ blueline anyway. Plus there’s a possibility that Gudbranson is traded by the deadline, as he’ll be a UFA at season’s end.

It wasn’t all good for the Canucks, as Bo Horvat left the game late in the third period against the Hurricanes. Should Horvat miss any time, it could be a concern for not only Horvat owners, but also Brock Boeser owners.

The reinforcements are starting to appear for the Ducks. Rickard Rakell returned to the Ducks’ lineup on Tuesday, although he was held without a point. Meanwhile, Adam Henrique has three assists in three games as a Duck. So Derek Grant’s days as a top-6 center are officially over, as he has been held to less than nine minutes in each of his last three games.

But the Ducks still give up a ton of shots (36.3 SA/GP – highest in the league). Although John Gibson is holding his own in leagues that count saves, it’s been a constant battle for him to earn wins. An 8-10-2 record with a 2.97 GAA is more on the team than on Gibson, who also holds a solid .921 SV%. On Tuesday it was 43 shots on Gibson, who stopped 40 of them in the shootout loss.

Ruben is the most self righteous asshole I've ever met in a game and it pisses me off so bad that he gets to walk around like he is the shit, when in reality the bitch amounts to probably nothing in this game past the new Parvati tribe. Mastermind was great, I was surprisingly really good at it!!! Getting a tie for the lowest score on my tribe also makes me look good, so that's a plus! 

Well here we are, the dreaded tribal council once again. But WHEW, what a round. So Jaiden has hopefully been called out on all his shit. Me Dom Sarah and Julia all compared notes and i think we've established that he his a lil shit and none of us trust him. Ummm Whitney is probably going this round, probably unanimous with her self voting. I think it should be fine everyone seems to realize she is just given up. So i think I should be safe this round. let's see what happens :)

He said that Sarah and Julia have told him everything I said about him. From how I felt like he was too much, how I didn't like him at all, how I wanted to use him to get further in the game. All that shit. That's why I voted for him, according to them. It's real funny because for a while, I did believe those things to be true. Sarah was the first person I talked to about all that. I thought she was my friend, I really did. But I see why she's on the villains tribe, because she's a heartless, cold-blooded viper. The entire Dom vote came as a result of her and Julia wanting him gone. Certainly, I didn't help with them coming to that decision, but it's become evident to me that this is the person everyone parades around and claims to be best friends with. We talk about that Bangladesh final tribal where Sarah cries over how Eddie betrayed her so badly, but then here she is, acting like a complete hypocrite. She can say that these two situations are not the same, which they are not, but the knife she plunged into my back burns the same. I can't say that I didn't see this coming. I fucked up, so it makes sense why everything spilled out in front of me on the dirt floor. Now I have to work on making people like me again, because I don't think they'll trust me for a while. We can say that I have a long road ahead before I can regain their trust, but the truth is that I have a much steeper path to the finish than before. They might not ever trust me, so I need to give them a reason to understand me. I don't know how, but I'll try. I'll take the knife that was firmly planted in my back and return it to its rightful owner one day. I did these things for her, and while she was always on my hit list, no matter that she was low, I think she's found her way to the top. Karma is a bitch, and so is she. Maybe I won't win this fight, but I think I'll die trying, and I'm at peace with that.

So last tribal council was....interesting lol. Going into tribal council I had Alex trying hard as fuck to get Dom/Me and Lexi/Robin to split our votes. I could tell he knew we were all close and when he suggested the girls vote this way and boys vote this way plan, I immediately caught onto what he was trying to do. He definitely had a hidden agenda. What I didn't think about at the time and I should have, but how did he find out about the four of us being close. And my question was answered when one, Jaiden tried getting me to throw my vote on Alex and two, Jaiden fucking voted with Johnny, Alex, and Julia against Dom. This pissed me off because I trusted Jaiden with every ounce of my soul. Between him and the other 3 people of my "alliance", I thought they were all the only people I could trust in the game. Yet he went behind my back and tried voting Dom out. Luckily Dom pulled out his idol, took out Johnny, and gave us the majority going into future tribals. However my trust for Jaiden is gone. And Alex/Julia are both viewed as shady fucks in this game in my eyes. I see how they wanna play the game now, which is fine because they are so predictable... Anyway with Johnny gone, it gave my crew the numbers despite Jaiden playing both sides HARD. He made it clear that he was closer to Alex/Julia when they both told me everything I had said to Jaiden while Jaiden was not telling me this. It's fucked up, because Jaiden went from on of my closest allies to one of the shadiest guys I know. Still, I kinda need to keep him on the good side with me because I already don't know many peeps in this game. Moving on to the next challenge it was revealed as the "Heroes Challenge." Everybody said it was a potential swap with the volunteers from each tribe being captains. And even if that wasn't true, I was confident that whomever competes for their tribe will also receive a clue to the idol. Therefore rather either of those two were true or not, I wasn't about to risk someone like Alex or Jaiden getting that advantage. So obviously I volunteered, despite me thinking I would probably lose or even throw the challenge lol. However I ended up BARELY winning the challenge. I decided I wanted to win it for two reason. One, if I won I might receive an idol clue and Two, I wanted to send the other tribe to tribal to hopefully see Whitney or Liam voted out as I knew they were apparently targets. Plus I guess I sort of wanted to look like a Hero of the tribe. So moving forward, I think I want to lose challenges more. I don't want to miss an opportunity to get out Julia or Alex (thinking that keeping Jaiden around might be smarter for me personally. Especially since Jaiden now has a fucked relationship with Alex/Julia). Still, if it's another volunteer type thing my allies HAS to be the ones to volunteer lmao. The idol must stay out of their hands!!!!

Watching the NBA Dunk Contest as I write this, but a lot has happened as of late. My #1, Alex, is now in a compromising position given the last tribal on his swapped tribe. Jaden is a snake. I'll finish this confessional after tribal. The Liam vote is mine by the way!

I can't wait for this merge to come up soon. I definitely thought we were swapping with it when Ruben/Sarah went head to head. Now that we didn't, I guarantee the two of them got some special prize for putting their head on the line there. I just need to make the merge or swap with Gavin. Us two are really tight and there's a lot of things that can go wrong to where we can't meet back up and run things. So I'm just praying at this point.

Welp we're voting for Whitney because she is dead as fuck.

Hello again, we’re going to tribal for the first time as swapped tribes, which is the thing I dread most in the game. It’s so irritating because I can’t connect with these people excluding Jordan. Casey is never on to talk about the game and doesn’t seem like she ever wants to strategize which is annoying due to the fact that she is the only one from my original tribe. We also have Sarah who I’ve heard speaks to everyone in the game and will barely talk to me. Liam and Whitney haven’t replied to me and Whitney just has not been online at all. Gavin speaks to me every once in awhile but rarely about game and is acting overly suspicious after I notified him I heard Whitney from multiple people. He didn’t agree and didn’t disagree so he does not trust me and does not seem to want to vote Whitney lmao. He can go soon enough even though we could align and make a big move against people who are noticeably aligned with a large majority of the cast. I hate people who want to float by and do nothing while they get played by these power players; it just dulls the experience. I like a lot of the people on the other tribe so being swapped onto this tribe was just a big letdown. Here’s to hoping I’m not voted off over someone who’s never here which would be embarrassing but more so to the ones who don’t know what a big move is.

As for me personally, I’ve been trying to play the dumb role and acting as if I don’t have a clue as to what’s going on most of the time. I also let others see me as trustworthy, make alliances for me so they cannot be traced back to me starting them and will let Jordan assume that I’m his puppet. I considered voting Jordan so I could blame the vote on someone else and I would assume he would believe me over others since we’ve had multiple heart to hearts. It’d bring some necessary fun into this game because quite frankly it’s been dull. The only reason I could not go through it was due to the weird prior connections everyone has had from original tribes and the way the votes would shake down wasn’t 100% so if they decide not to vote Whitney then it would unravel and such. I’ll just try to keep myself safe for now and then would have enough time to make big moves further down the road. Perhaps Whitney could hold off on coming online for a little while longer and just be removed?

I'm so happy I've gotten this far in the game! I'm guaranteed 15th place at this point I believe which is much better than I had anticipated after going through the struggles of being on the bottom in the Nayak tribe. I'm glad we won immunity but I'm also concerned. Jaiden doesn't seem to be doing too well. It looks like a lot of person issues exploded between him and a few other people. Game wise, this is great for me because people play with their emotions so they're more likely to want to get rid of him than me. He's like a meat shield for me. I've talked to him though and I feel bad. It's an online game and I don't think people should be taking these things personally. This should be fun and not affecting someone's mental health negatively. I hope he feels better and that he finds some way to get himself in a better position in the game. I wouldn't mind helping him out with that.

So jaiden betrayed us in the last vote and we had no clue dom was getting votes until the last minute so good thing he played his idol. I wish ruben would of lost that duel challenge so we could of sent julia or alex out the door. Keeping jaiden is beneficial since her and dom will just be at each other and not us.
