being the therapist friend all the time is such hell
#sorry i didn’t respond perfectly to your incredibly complex traumadump when i was literally 20 years old#like dgmw there are definitely explicitly wrong ways to respond to someone who is struggling#but i am fucking BEGGING you to have some grace for people that you vent to when they say something that maybe wasn’t the best thing to say#i promise you we regret it too but often we’re just trying to make you feel better any way we can and sometimes we take shots that miss!!!#and also! i have zero psychological training. something to remember#anyway. just venting. not trying to blame anyone who needs to vent after a traumatic experience like i completely get it#i’m not an ‘are you in a space to receive this information’ person i find that robotic. u should b allowed 2 talk abt trauma to your friend#but pls just like. learn the difference between someone who means well and made a misstep vs someone that genuinely means you harm#anyway again#self#vent

BnHA Chapter 305: Worst Intervention Ever
Previously on BnHA: Shinomori, whose name took me an entire week to memorize, was all, “nice to meet you Deku, I’m ten feet tall, do you want to know how I died?” and without waiting for an answer explained that he kicked it from old age at forty thanks to good ol’ OFA. Deku was all “wait a minute, then how come All Might, who’s fifty-five and is definitely dyeing his gray hair, is still alive?” First and Shino were all, “we really have no fucking clue but we think it’s cuz he’s quirkless, JUST LIKE YOU!” So basically, since quirkless people don’t exactly grow on trees these days, Deku is probably going to be the last user of OFA. The chapter ended with Nana being all, “psst, Deku, about my grandson. Uh, can you kill him?” which is sure to lead to a very interesting conversation this week.
Today on BnHA: Nana And The Gang are all “so, Deku, how can we put this delicately. The thing is, we’re pretty sure that AFO really fucked my grandson up, so on the off chance you can’t save him, how would you feel about, you know... [throat slitting gesture].” Deku is all “idk you guys, I kinda feel like he’s really just a traumatized child at heart and he’s in a lot of pain and stuff and so I should try to help him.” The Vestiges are all “BUT WHAT IF YOU CAN’T” and Deku is all “BUT I WANT TO TRY, DAMMIT” and the Vestiges are all “well when you put it that way, we, uh, were just testing you, so congrats, you passed!” The chapter ends with First being all, “ANYWAY SO WHY DON’T YOU TWO SHY BOYS STANDING OVER THERE IN THE SHADOWS COME SAY HELLO” before we CUT AWAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK, goddammit.
seriously, Nana
just... have you met Deku?? look, if you really want Tomura dead, just sic him on the U.A. first years and tell Shouto and Honenuki that it’s a training exercise
oh my god lmao
we’re too far away to see Nana’s face here so I will just assume that she turned and is staring DIRECTLY INTO THE CAMERA for this one line lmao. “I just wanted to clarify in case anyone felt inclined to take my dialogue out of context and spend an entire week complaining about it”
oh my god?! are you all purposely trying to make me sad??
someone stop me before I launch into an impromptu rant about all my Tomura feels. WHY IS NOBODY STOPPING ME. oh my god but yes, exactly. he’s just in pain all the time. this is exactly why I think Tomura has such high redemption potential even though so far he seems to lack so many of the redemption arc essentials such as feeling remorse, wanting to change, and taking responsibility for his actions. the reason why I’m willing to overlook all that in his case is because Tomura has essentially had zero agency his entire life. AFO molded him into a killer by making sure he was in constant mental agony, and making it so that the only thing that even slightly relieved that agony was killing peeps. like, please don’t think I’m making excuses for him or anything, but if you take a child and manipulate their existence to make it virtually impossible for that child to grow up as anything other than a killer, and basically never give him the chance to be anything else, then no shit he’s gonna be a killer?? he’s basically never had the choice not to be. it’s never been an option for him. anyways I feel like I am EXPLAINING MYSELF SO BADLY but nonetheless I am prepared to die on this hill
anyway so now Nana is all “that’s a rhetorical question btw because Our Hearts And Minds Are One so we can feel everything you feel bro.” so yeah, that’s interesting
now Banjou is getting started on the “let’s try and talk Deku out of wanting to save Tomura because it’s insane” part of their OFA Mystical Space Void Reunion agenda
look, Banjou, I feel you, I really do. you guys don’t think it’s realistic that Deku can defeat Tomura without killing him. so if it’s a choice between killing Tomura vs letting Deku and everyone else in the entire world die, then duh, you think Deku should kill him. I get it! and if this were a real life mass murderer I’d totally agree with you. but the problem is that this isn’t real life, this is a sympathetic shounen villain with a tragic past who might as well have FUTURE REDEMPTION ARC RECEIPIENT stamped on his forehead at this point
so First is all “look, there’s absolutely no doubt my brother has fucked this kid up good and proper by now”, which, again, fair
though, that’s kind of exactly my point though. everything that Tomura is, everything he’s done, he’s done because of AFO. AFO has so effectively shaped his personality and his worldview by this point that it’s all but impossible to penetrate that. he’s AFO’s puppet. but the problem is that rather than treating him like a victim, you all are treating him like a casualty. like he’s already a lost cause. but good luck trying to convince Deku of that
WHOA WHAT, RANDOM SUPER-IMPORTANT AND BIZARRELY UNRELATED EXPOSITION DROPPED IN JUST LIKE THAT??
way to still not reveal Sixth’s name, btw. THE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW, DAMMIT. but also so this confirms something we basically already knew already, which is that not even AFO can steal OFA. it literally can’t be taken away by anyone unless the owner wills it. SO SUCK ON THAT AFO YOU EGG
(ETA: so I have no idea why this was omitted from this translation, but apparently the Sixth’s name was revealed as “En”, which is obviously not his full name but at least it’s something. also he most likely has a fire or smoke-related quirk based on the kanji used, 煙.)
so Banjou is saying that Deku’s “lack of an iron will” could be a disadvantage against AFO. hahaha what?? Midoriya “I’ll break all of my bones without blinking an eye just to protect someone” Izuku lacks an iron will? do tell
he says this is going to be a test of Deku’s determination. well yeah, no shit. but just not in the way you guys think
OH HELLO AGAIN
darker hair again here! but I don’t trust the contrast in these scans at all after last week. his coveralls are way darker than they looked before too, and you can clearly see he’s standing in the shadows now
(ETA: yep, once again the raw shows that his hair is considerably lighter than what’s shown in these scans here. although there’s no mistaking now that his hair is consistently being colored in this slightly darker shade, and it’s not just the lighting.)
anyways lol First was saying something about how AFO can’t steal OFA, and they’ve spent all this time cultivating it as the ultimate weapon against AFO, and blah blah blah. go on then, keep lecturing
NANA GODDAMMIT NONE OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT
girl what?? you did everything in your power to protect your family, and AFO, fucked up man that he is, targeted them anyway. there is one person and one person only to blame for what’s happened to Tomura, and that potato-faced asshole needs a good kick in the balls
NANA GODDAMMIT DON’T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE
SO HELP ME GOD!! I WILL GIVE YOU THE BIGGEST HUG YOU’VE EVER HAD!! THAT IS A THREAT
so now Nana is all “I’m just going to call my grandson a Thing to ensure that fandom has only the freshest, grass-fed no-hormones-added discourse this week”
I don’t even need to drop into the tags to know exactly which specific people are going to respond to this, and what kind of posts they are going to write lmao. everyone’s all caught up in the “that thing”, and meanwhile I’m over here completely hung up on this “nay” that’s appeared out of NOWHERE you guys. look at that. she really said “NAY”
Nana, my love, my dearest, I feel you girl I really do. but he’s not an unforgivable manifestation of pure evil, Deku is exactly right actually, he’s a boy in pain. you guys need to stop questioning Deku’s shounen protagonist instincts here and just let him work his sparkly magic. “let’s try and convince Midoriya Fucking Izuku that he can’t save someone” is a plan that is NEVER going to turn out well you guys
“DEKU GODDAMMIT WHAT IF WE CAN’T SAVE HIM” lmao it’s like an intervention
“DAMMIT DEKU JUST ADMIT YOU HAVE A SAVING PEOPLE PROBLEM!”
RED ALERT IT’S ANOTHER CLOSE-UP OF THE BACK OF MISTER TWO BON CLAY’S HEAD OMG
(ETA: I was too distracted with freaking out about Two and Three to really appreciate how ridiculously handsome First looks in this panel. but on my second readthrough it stood out so much that I had to go back and add an extra bullet point just to talk about how hot he is. look at him. wtf.)
THAT IS DEFINITELY AN UNDERCUT. THE PLOT THICKENSSSS. also those are fucking exhaust vents on Mister Three’s neck. MISTER THREE COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE RELATED TO THE IIDAS, PLEASE TELL ME YOUR SECRETS I’M DYING OVER HERE
so now Deku is launching into what will undoubtedly be a “saving people problems require SAVING PEOPLE SOLUTIONS” heroic counter-speech!
I mean, they can already feel the “lol nah I’m gonna try and save him” feelings running through him lol. ~OuR hEaRtS aNd MiNdS aRe CoNnEcTeD~ and all that. this is just a formality, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love a good shounen protag speech
oh wait hold up, do you mean to tell me that the whole “hearts and minds are connected” thing I was just mocking just a paragraph ago actually allowed Deku to feel what Tomura was feeling?? like literally feel it??
YET AGAIN these Tomura feels are pounding on my front door you guys?? they just will not quit?? people my house is already full of feels, does it look like I need you to sell me any more of them?? -- what do you mean, they’re free??
AW YISS THAT’S IT DEKU. THAT’S SOME GOOD SPEECH RIGHT THERE
I appreciate the contrast here between the Douchebag Triumvirate of Overhaul, Muscular, and Stain versus the Misguided Twosome of Gentle and La Brava. never let it be said that Deku doesn’t know the difference between a redeemable villain and an unredeemable one
OH NO -- OH MY GOD
someone please help me I need directions to the OFA Spooky Galactic Nebula Realm in this fictional Japanese manga land. it’s not on google maps. I need to give these two babies a big hug and wrap them up in a blanket and treat them to some McDonalds Happy Meals please help
other things: (1) ENDEAVOR CHILLING OUT IN DEKU’S “PEOPLE I HOLD DEAR” PANEL LMAO NEON DISCOURSE EXTRAVAGANZA, (2) “ONE FOR ALL IS A POWER TO SAVE, NOT TO KILL” I’M ABOUT TO CRY DEKU I LOVE YOU SO MUCH HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO FEEL ALL THIS LOVE, (3) [SLAMS HANDS ON TABLE] THERE’S YOUR MOTHERFUCKING IRON WILL!!!!!!!! -- I’m sorry, please don’t call security, I’ll be good
I just randomly remembered that Deku is still saying all of this in his muffled “FMMPHHMMPHMM” voice and I’m somehow cracking up lol. so actually it’s a very good thing Their Hearts And Minds Are Connected, otherwise they’d no doubt be all, “...what?”
(ETA: so I completely missed this on account of it literally not being visible in the scan at all, but in the raw you can clearly see Baby Kacchan and Baby Shouto fanboying over All Might in two of these panels, and excuse me, ma’am??
thank you very much Deku for including them in your montage, particularly since you’ve never seen Baby Shouto before lol. amazingly accurate image you managed to conjure up, all things considered.)
SDKFJLSKHG -- AS IF ON CUE???
HE’S SO ADORABLE HELP?? Trippy Space All Might looks like he’s about to cry, and First is all “don’t crack a smile... you have to be Firm and Serious here... dammit, don’t smile” omg
anyways! YOU GO DEKU. “MY QUIRK MY RULES, BITCHES” damn, son
KLJLKKHLG TRIPPY SPACE ALL MIGHT LITERALLY ACTUALLY IS CRYING ALL MIGHT HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME
“I JUST... [CLENCHES FIST] REALLY LOVE SAVING PEOPLE” FUCKING HELL LMAO THIS IS THE WORST INTERVENTION OF ALL TIME
Deku is literally all “sure, maybe I’ll have to kill him, but have you guys also considered, MAYBE NOT??” it’s no use Nana he’s too powerful
LMAO FIRST
“like I’ve been saying this whole time, you should definitely try saving Shigaraki Tomura.” “but, uh... First, didn’t you just -- ” “shut up”
(ETA: clearly it’s not just his brother who inherited those smooth-talking genes.)
so now Deku has turned back into a sixteen year old and his clothes have gone missing again. just OFA things
dskljdlsklgk
yes... sure... “testing” you...
HEY
FIRST OF ALL, DAMN YOU HORIKOSHI YOU MADE NANA CRY. even if I’m pretty sure they’re actually tears of happiness/relief. and SECOND OF ALL, “TELL MY BOYFRIEND I SAID HI” DJSKDLKJJL ANYWAY MAYBE GRAN, NANA, AND MR. SHIMURA WERE IN A THROUPLE
[SCREAMS]
WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE?? WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE!!!!!
(ETA: and two-to-one odds that we cut away to some other scene once they finally start to turn around next week. I’M CALLING IT NOW. giving myself a week to brace myself for the rage.)
fucking hell. well if anyone needs me I will be adding Horikoshi fucking Kouhei to the list of irredeemable villains, peace
#bnha 305#midoriya izuku#shigaraki tomura#shimura tenko#shimura nana#ofa the first#banjou daigorou#bnha#boku no hero academia#bnha spoilers#mha spoilers#bnha manga spoilers#makeste reads bnha#'deku. sweetheart. your other vestiges and I just want what's best for you'#'have you tried... *not* saving people?'#only to backpedal SPECTACULARLY when he was all 'WHAT DO YOU MEAN NOT SAVING THEM'#yeah okay guys#you're not fooling anyone#but it's okay I still love you

the seven + others playing among us
because i fucking love this game
annabeth
so good. like. too fucking good
prefers the imposter role because she is amazing at sabotaging and killing without getting seen
a master at travelling the vents unnoticed
very good at making sure she doesn’t form a pattern in who she kills
only self reports when she knows she won’t be suspicious
changes her behavior in real life to be less suspicious in game
percy always gets so offended when she kills him out of convenience
(“i can’t believe you killed me!” “you were literally in a room alone doing your task it was too easy”)
memorized every task so she always has an alibi
when she’s a crewmate she just finishes her tasks and always saves the crew when they imposter sabotages the reactor or something
is always able to figure out who the imposter because she memorized everyone’s tells like the little shit she is (and percy can’t even lie to her anymore like he’s the worst liar)
wears white
percy
is kinda good at being the imposter but definitely kills certain people on purpose
those people: jason (duh, he liked to piss him off), piper (cause he thinks it’s funny when she’s mad), reyna (bc he considers that a fucking accomplishment he would totally go around camp jupiter telling everyone he killed the praetor), and leo (no explanation needed)
refuses to kill: annabeth (bc he’s a simp), hazel (bc he loves her too much), grover (🐐)
people he’s indifferent to killing: frank and nico (but he still feels kinda bad bc my boy is too sweet)
when he’s the imposter he’s so bad at defending himself
and annabeth can read him super easily
so when she accuses him he’s just like “yeah just vote me out lolz”
when he’s a crewmate he kinda just does his tasks idk
but he never saves the crew when their being sabotaged cause he doesn’t like that pressure
always reports the body and immediately goes on the chat like “guys who killed my girlfriend 😡”
always blames it on jason cause he likes seeing him get mad
and when it’s not jason percy’s like 🤷🏾
wears blue
leo
he’s the most chaotic to play with adskjskdjk
like
he’s such a good imposter but he also accidentally brags when he kills someone
“so who do you guy think it is?” “idk but whoever it was is a really good imposter” “... ok so it’s leo”
even if he’s not the imposter people vote him out when he’s being annoying
loves sabotaging
always kills frank first cause he thinks it’s hilarious
next would be annabeth because she’s super smart
but everyone tries to kill annabeth first
doesn’t kill hazel because he thinks she’s too pure
also doesn’t kill nico
very good crewmate
always finishes his tasks first
and when he’s done he just follows people around to freak them out and make them think he’s the imposter
wears orange
piper
also chaotic
always kills annabeth first but like makes it a point to do it so everyone always knows it’s her
in the off chance she doesn’t kill annabeth first she always tries to pin it on her
has definitely accidentally revealed herself as the imposter multiple times
definitely charmspeaks people into thinking it’s not her
and it actually works a fair amount of times
if someone kills her she gets so annoyed it’s so funny
cusses so much
like
they have to kick her out bEcAuSe hAzEl
but hazel thinks it’s hilarious
decent crewmate but she definitely prefers imposter
wears red
frank
hates this game
like
cannot stand it
but he doesn’t want to be left out so he plays it
he hates being the imposter so much
he doesn’t like to kill people so he just sabotages
but he’s not very good at that either
if he ever does kill he always accidentally does it in front of someone or he gets caught immediately
when someone accuses him it’s super obvious when he’s lying
but he’s a very good crewmate
always does his tasks and helps save the crew when things get sabotaged
will literally watch the imposter kill someone and when he reports it he accidentally says the wrong color
(this makes it seem like i hate frank i really don’t this is literally just how i play)
wears brown
jason
he’s literally dead he can’t play
kidding kidding
definitely still hasn’t figured out the map
easiest to kill because he just wanders around aimlessly til he finds a task he was assigned
is so bad at the admin card swipe he gets kicked out (which has actually happened to my brother)
every time he gets killed the chat fills up with “was it a brick” or just 🧱
leo and annabeth make an animation of jason’s color getting hit on the head with a brick by reyna’s color
never saves the crew when they’re sabotaged because he can’t get there fast enough and he doesn’t have the ability to do it fast enough anyway
he’s like an ok imposter?
idk like there’s not much to say for jason
wears purple (because camp jupiter. yes he’s that boring)
hazel
y’all
hazel is
a fucking RUTHLESS imposter
and no one ever thinks it’s her
and she loves it
being the imposter is definitely her preferred role
always kills leo first
never kills jason cause she thinks it’s funny to watch him try to play
but she rarely sabotages
she just kills
if she does sabotage it’s the lights
because she’s smart
self reports all the time and tries to act traumatized by discovering a dead body so no one suspects her
she’ll always tell nico when she’s the imposter so they’ll pair up but he’ll always vouch and say it wasn’t her
she always wins as imposter
and when it’s revealed it’s her everyone is liked 😧
good crewmate
gets her tasks done and saves the crew when they’re sabotaged
wears purple (but bc she likes the color not cause of camp jupiter)
nico
pretends to hate this game but secretly loves it
doesn’t really care about being imposter or a crewmate he just likes to watch how everyone else plays/interacts
if he is the imposter he’ll never kill hazel
who he kills (in order): leo (just cause he’s annoying), jason, annabeth, reyna, percy, piper, frank, grover, (never hazel)
definitely makes random accusation because it’s funny
he’ll never say it but if annabeth kills him he doesn’t care and roots for her to win bc he loves annabeth
finds percy and annabeth’s banter super entertaining
if he’s not the imposter he definitely follows people around and freaks them out for fun (specifically jason, leo, frank)
good crewmate and always saves everyone’s asses
will call the emergency meeting to say he watched leo kill someone (which he didn’t) or just to be like “yo im hungry y’all want mcdonalds after this?” (they can’t even be mad and everyone definitely gets mcdonalds after)
wears black duh
reyna
mix of annabeth and hazel
super good at the game and definitely enjoys the killing
main difference between her and annabeth is that annabeth is more strategic whereas reyna just kills whenever she feels like it
that being said
she does kill jason first
then percy
definitely hesitates on killing annabeth because she likes her enjoys watching her try to figure out who it is
annabeth and reyna have an unspoken agreement that when reyna’s the imposter annabeth won’t say anything as long as reyna doesn’t kill her
i just love reynabeth ok
master at traveling the vents
if she’s a crewmate she follows around grover, frank, leo, and jason for fun
because she finishes tasks fast obviously
saves everyone’s asses when they get sabotaged
will randomly accuse leo when she has no idea who it is in the first round
(the girls all go along with it)
originally wears blue but she doesn’t wanna match with percy so she switches to white to match with annababe ❤️
grover
is so bad at the imposter it’s so funny
but him and percy always partner up and vouch for each other
but if percy’s the imposter and grover knows he’s very bad at keeping it a secret
and annabeth knows those two the best out of anyone so she always figures it out
sometimes she won’t say anything though because those two are dumbasses but they’re HER dumbasses
he’s so sweet and doesn’t like to kill
would rather sabotage
he’ll definitely lock the doors on people cause it’s funny
good crewmate
knows the map really well
never does the tasks to save the crew when their sabotaged cause it stresses him out
idk what else to say for him lmao
wears dark green
when there’s two imposters
best most dangerous duo: annabeth and reyna
deadliest duo: hazel and reyna
most chaotic duo: leo and piper
boring but funny duo: jason and frank
chaotic but cute and funny duo: grover and percy
funniest duo: percy and annabeth (because their banter on the side and the fact that percy gets distracted by how cool his gf is)
duo that bickers so nothing gets done: frank and leo
duo that doesn’t work together: jason and percy
duo that no one expected to be really good together: nico and annabeth
stealthiest duo: hazel and nico
duo that would expose each other: leo and percy
(i’m tagging @tridentgum because i remember you asked for this lmao)
#please give this notes i worked so hard on this#thanks to my brother for helping me#pls play this game it's so fun#also sorry for all the jason slander#but im not really sorry#also no this is not a jercy post so#let's be real folks#they dont get along that well#also yes i love reynabeth#can you tell?#stan a nico and annabeth friendship for clear skin#among us#the seven#annabeth chase#percy jackson#leo valdez#piper mclean#jason grace#frank zhang#hazel levesque#nico di angelo#reyna ramirez arellano#pjo headcanon#pjo

Do you have some HC for Ghastly grieving for skulduggery?
Asking for a friend
GOD @thats-so-craven and i were just talking about this actually
Okay, so. thats-so-craven has a headcanon (which I love) that up until his Surge, Ghastly had lowkey Sensitive tendencies, because he's from an old family of powerful seers. He never sees the world ending, but like. Sometimes he'll get a bad feeling, and decide to walk the long way home, and avoid a fight without quite knowing why. It gets more powerful as he gets older, and closer to his Surge. Being a natural Sensitive is inherent, so it never completely goes away. The dreams and visions become weaker, and rarer, and are virtually eradicated by the Surge, but an untrained Sensitive has no control over what they see, and no ability to stop it.
Like, Ghastly is the one who says this. He grew up with a Sensitive for a mother, he knows that not everyone crosses over cleanly if their death is traumatic. Skug died alone, he died in agony, and he died full of hatred. How could he possibly rest easy after that?
Anyway, after Skug's death, Ghastly starts Seeing him.
It's almost comforting, at first? He'll look up from his work, and for a moment he'll see Skug sitting in front of the fire, trying to warm himself. Or, as he's packing up Skug's things to send home for safekeeping, out of the corner of his eye he'll catch a glimpse of Skug sat on the bed reading a book. Skug drags his own memorial and everybody at it - "Ugh, look at Guild, the greaseball, what's he doing here? He never liked me anyway! Oh, and there's my brother, haven't spoken to him in fifteen years...that hairstyle does not suit him, has anyone told him he looks like a pillock?" - while Ghastly is caught between laughing and sobbing.
If he's a ghost, he doesn't seem particularly vengeful or corrupted.
But the thing is, Skug isn't dead.
Not properly.
Skug - the soul - is still attached to his bones, lying in a bag at the bottom of a river. He's in that awful situation coma patients can end up in - he's conscious, he knows what's happening around him, but he can't move. He hasn't figured out how to drag himself back fully into the land of the living yet. He's just tethered to a body that no longer works.
And Skug is not fully human. He has a defense mechanism that isn't human at all. A defense mechanism inherited from a father whose prime power is mind manipulation - in other words, a Sensitive-based ability.
Subconsciously, he's reaching out for help. The Sanctuary's trained Sensitives all have psychic shielding, and he's not experienced enough to get around that. But Ghastly hasn't had Sensitive feelings since his Surge, and his mind is totally open.
But the longer he spends in that river, the more frustrated he gets, the more angry he becomes that he can't make Ghastly understand what he needs or how to find him. And the more frustrated he gets, the less control he has over what Ghastly sees as his subconscious takes over. So the "haunting" goes from mostly benevolent and chatty, to staticky and frightening.
Ghastly will see him at the foot of the bed in the middle of the night, rotting and decaying from a soaked, waterlogged corpse to a skeleton. He has awful dreams about Skug drowning. When he looks in the mirror, Skug might appear behind him, soaking wet, saying help me through water gushing from his mouth, and then he'll disappear before Ghastly can ask with what. Vile - the part of Skug that isn't human - is trying to bring him help, but this is the closest he can get to explaining what's happened and where he is. He doesn't know where he is.
Of course, this doesn't make Ghastly realise he's still aware, at the bottom of the river. It just makes him cry himself to sleep. He believes Skug has become a vengeful ghost, and he's punishing Ghastly because he blames him for his death - because Ghastly sure as shit blames himself.
Eventually, he makes an appointment with a Sensitive - one he's not related to, he couldn't stand how much this would upset his mother - and has a wall built in his mind to protect him from outside interference - similar to what Cassie and Argeddion do to Val.
Abruptly, the hallucinations stop.
The delayed grief hits Ghastly all in one go at that point. While he was still able to look up and catch sight of Skug, however briefly, it didn't really feel like he was dead. Now he has to come to terms with the fact that Skug is gone - forever. He's never coming back. They'll never see each other again, and forever is a very, very long time.
This is. Equally awful for Skug. For however many years he's been in the river at this point, Ghastly has been that one little point of contact he's had. The one thing to occupy his mind, the one way he could still interact with the world. Even after losing everything, he still had that bridge between them.
But now that bridge is gone, and there's a giant wall on Ghastly's side, and he's mentally pounding on that wall begging Ghastly to come back, to listen, please, he has to understand.
And Ghastly can't hear him anymore.
So he spends the rest of the time until he figures out how to start moving his body again lying in that bag. Silent. Alone. Frozen. Small wonder necromancy felt safe and familiar, after that.
Highkey, this has longterm consequences for both of them. It's the first step of distance between them once Skug comes back. Up to that point, they were inseparable, told each other everything, were so involved in each other's lives that Ghastly was practically a third parent to Skug's son. But this is the second time in a very short period where Skug desperately needed Ghastly and Ghastly (through no fault of his own, but Skug doesn't feel that) failed him. When he returns, he's backed off considerably. The trust isn't there anymore. Ghastly will be talking quietly over the campfire, telling him that he missed him, he was lost without him...and all Skulduggery can think is You're a liar. You're a liar.
So when Ghastly comes to Skug and tells him to watch out for Abyssinia, says, "She's manipulating you, she's bad news, we can all see it," Skug looks at her, at the woman who tells him I love you, darling even though there's nothing loveable left about him anymore, who understands how angry he is and encourages him to vent it, who validates every bit of betrayal and resentment, then looks back at Ghastly...and tells him to watch his fucking mouth when he's talking to a superior officer.
And we all know where that leads.

Not Very Realistic
Ships: platonic prinxiety, platonic logince,
Warnings: Car accident, injuries, PTSD, swearing, food mention,
Summary: Roman considers his feelings about his car accident. This is basically a vent fic about a car accident I was just in, I’m okay, but that does mean it will be extremely full of angst and if that’s not your thing I wouldn’t recommend this specific story. AO3 Link
Word Count: 2.5K
-
There’s something weird about trauma that Roman just didn’t understand. He knew that logically, that the car had crashed, but he wasn’t a very logical person. Even looking at the wreckage in full, talking about what happened to his family, part of him still refused to believe that none of it had happened. Despite looking at the cuts showing blood on his hands were right there as evidence. None of this felt real, but it was. How does he deal with that?
Roman ran his hands through his hair. It had been a few hours. His arm had gotten washed up. He was completely fine, except for a few bruises around his fingers. But was he fine? Roman had stopped crying a while ago and mostly just felt denial. Thoughts in the back of his mind were whispering ‘you wouldn’t crash a car, you wouldn’t make that kind of mistake’ and ‘you didn’t even break a bone, car accidents are worse than that.’ They were silenced when Roman breathed in, almost believing he smelt the smoke. Everything should have been fine, but he had gone and messed it up. He didn’t want to, he genuinely thought that things were going to be okay.
But they weren’t, and they aren’t.
It had been a few hours since the accident. Roman felt like he should be more phased. A car accident was an extremely traumatic event that he had experienced that same day! And all he could think about was the fact he couldn’t remember what it felt like. Roman knew what happened before; He was trying to make a turn on a green light and didn’t see the other car. And he also knew what happened after; calling Patton in a panic because he made a mistake he forgot that can just happen to anyone. Roman remembered the police officers and his family rushing to him, asking him what had happened, only for him to choke out that he didn’t know. He laid back on his bed, looking up at the ceiling. Realistically, he had been extremely lucky and he knew that. Car related accidents kill so many people every day. And he just spent one afternoon watching his car getting towed before going home without saying anything.
Logan said that it wasn’t productive to think about how past events could’ve better played out. But, Roman wasn’t a logical person. He couldn’t help but imagine it. Replaying how he reacted. He could’ve been looking better, he could’ve registered how the fucking rules of the road work. Hell, he could’ve been quieter instead complaining about whatever song Virgil was playing on bluetooth. He rolled over to the side that was less hurt and took a breath.
Virgil. He bit the inside of his cheek. This entire event wasn’t okay, and was absolutely Roman’s fault. Virgil shouldn’t have been stuck with the consequences of someone else’s actions. Roman’s thoughts helpfully reminded him that he had been in an accident, something that his brain decided to forget to process once more. Roman felt so incredibly guilty for all the pain he put everyone in. He knew that he was hurt too, but did that matter? It was all his fault, anyways.
The door creaked open and Roman heard someone clear their throat. Roman looked up to see the other victim of the car accident. Virgil seemed tired and awkward in the doorway. “Logan made food. Said eating and drinking water can help with the effects of everything.”
“Okay,” The way his voice croaked out the word sounded like Roman’s mouth forgot how to form words and he hadn’t had water for a decade. He cringed at the sound of it. Roman started to say something, an apology maybe? But Virgil started closing the door. So he whispered another sentence. “I’ll be right out.”
Time and time throughout the day Roman could go from joking about what had happened, to feeling bad about it, to almost completely forgetting about it entirely. He felt weirdly guilty about his own emotions about it. Like he wasn’t reacting necessarily as he should. Roman couldn’t even tell how he felt about it all, he was just tired. Too much had happened and his body was tired of experiencing all these things. So it wasn’t, not properly anyway.
By the time the sun had set, Roman was sitting outside, watching the clouds go by, not really putting any effort into thinking. And still his mind was bombarding him with fear, pain, and guilt. So much guilt to the person in the other car, and to Virgil, who had to experience it with him. Mostly he felt guilty to everyone around him for having to deal with it because he was too busy being sorry that he couldn’t move or breathe. He wasn’t crying anymore, and his breathing was fine. But it didn’t feel like that. Should he be in more pain? Is that something that he deserves? If you’re going to wreck a car, why go for the simplest way to do it? Car crashes feel like a very dramatic experience so why does Roman feel underwhelmed?
Everything was too much or too little for his brain and Roman wasn’t sure how to handle it. He held himself with his arms, wondering why this had to happen. If he hadn’t been overly ambitious for once, this wouldn’t have happened. Right?
“How are you feeling, Roman?” Logan asked him. Roman had almost completely forgotten that he was there. Roman blinked and gave a huge smile.
“Well, specs, can’t say that I planned for any of this to happen.” Roman shrugged, his smile dropping as he looked down. His arms loosened up. Logan nodded, like he wanted Roman to open up about everything. Or maybe just to show that he was listening. “I was so sure that I wasn’t going to get hurt. Which isn’t true and I know that. Everyone can get hurt, I was caught up in some sort of main protagonist complex that I didn’t even realize that my mistakes matter. I fucked up and I don’t know if I can move on. My brain isn’t even letting me confirm that it happened, despite me knowing that it did. I blinked and the car was full of smoke.”
Roman laughed bitterly, and Logan furrowed his eyebrows in concern, but didn’t say anything. “I didn’t even register what had happened until Virgil told me to get out of the car. I truly don’t believe that I would’ve moved without him. Which is pathetic. I caused that accident but Virgil had to take charge of the situation because my brain wasn’t able to process it. And now I don’t know how I’m going to react to having to drive again! What if I fuck up and this time it’s even worse? None of this feels okay but I don’t know what to do…”
“Do you want advice?” Logan asked, calmly.
He decided to nod, focusing on trying not to cry instead of speaking.
“Alright. I believe that some of your thinking is similar to the cognitive distortion called ‘catastrophic thinking’. Catastrophic thinking is when after a person experiences a traumatic event starts reacting to every possible danger at the same level of the event they experienced. This is because it takes away the thinking that you’re constantly safe and not going to get hurt, so your brain is trying to make you feel safer by taking your ability to EVER get put into danger, which is not something that you can avoid.” Logan took a breath and stopped to make sure that Roman was still following. He was looking down at his fiddling hands, repopping his fingers repetitively. “You’re going to have to slowly break through this habit of thinking by giving yourself alternatives that aren’t just ‘safe’ or ‘dangerous’ because that is not how the world functions.”
Roman nodded, mostly to himself while Logan was talking. “Okay.” His voice was smaller than he wanted it to be but he was too tired to attempt to change that. Roman stood up shakily, not from the accident, but from his own fear enveloping his head. “Thanks Logan, I mean that, I really appreciate this. I’m going to try going to bed now.”
“Of course, Roman.” Logan responded, as Roman opened the backdoor back to the inside. He made no attempt to move, just watching his friend walk away from his sight. “I am here for you whenever you need me.”
As the door closed, Roman could see that the sky had gone dark as the sun disappeared.
Virgil had apparently decided to check on Roman one last time before going to bed. If him walking in after knocking a few times meant anything that is. Roman made eye contact with Virgil, wondering if that was going to be the end of their friendship. He would completely understand if it was, seeing as how badly everything had gone. Roman took a deep breath and got ready for any chastising that could occur.
“Princey?” He tensed up, waiting for Virgil to finish. “Are you okay? Today was… a lot.”
Oh, huh. “I mean, not really, but that doesn’t matter as much. How are you feeling? It wasn’t your fault that the whole thing happened. I’m so sorry.”
“Dude, I know you’re sorry.” Virgil stated, sitting on the bed next to Roman. “I didn’t ask about that. I know you didn’t mean to crash a car, that isn’t your thing. And the question was kind of a formality anyways. I just wanted to know if you were open to talking about it.”
Roman groaned. “All I’ve DONE today is talk about it. It’s the only thing in my head and my brain is still trying to convince me that it didn’t happen.” He fell backwards onto the bed, while Virgil watched him without a readable expression. “It’s all so much but also just… Just not. Y’know?”
“Yes,” Virgil said plainly. “I do know. Believe it or not, I was there. And I don’t blame you, man. You made a mistake. One that might traumatize us, but I’m not going to hold that against you. We’re both equally messed up here.”
The two laughed, and Virgil laid down next to Roman. Roman took a breath, something he wasn’t able to do when talking to the police. While looking at the ceiling he decided to think out loud. “Can you believe how many people honked at us when we got out of the car? I mean I know it was in the middle of an intersection but also the car was like half destroyed. The audacity is unreal.” He vaguely remembered hearing some of those cars stop to call 911, and the words of what they said echoing in his mind.
Virgil rolled his eyes dramatically. “I know. Two cars, one on the sidewalk and the other in the road after the car crash, how dare we be focused on other things than what everyone else needs to get done? I’m actually surprised how well we held it together for a while, before we both started crying on the concrete, at least.”
The room stayed silent for a while, both of them still processing what happened to them. Roman was tired of every moment of silence being interrupted with thoughts of the accident. He remembered yelling out as soon as he saw the other car and it was too late. One moment they were going to go shopping, and the next he blinked to see the airbags and smoke coming from everywhere. When Patton, Logan, and Remus arrived he was sobbing apologies into their shoulders, wanting to believe that none of this was real. It certainly didn’t feel like it. Roman wiped off the tears that were starting to form and looked at Virgil.
“How do we move on from this? This is just… So much.” Roman asked. Virgil had been in a few car accidents as a child, some better and some worse. Still traumatic.
“Well,” He started. “It took a while, and I mostly associated the fear of being in a car to the exact situation I was in. Like an icy road or something. But this just… happened. And there’s nothing we can do to change that. We… I don’t know what we’ll do, but we can figure it out.”
Roman tried not to look discontented. “That’s not exactly as well thought out as I would like, I kind of just want to move on. How can I focus on the future when every other thought is reminding me that we could have died?! We could have killed that person and our future and their future would have been ruined. I should’ve waited, I should’ve looked, I should’ve-!” He sat up, and Virgil soon followed. Roman wasn’t crying but he looked like he was about to. Virgil held his arm and he fell limp onto the side of his friend. “I just wish it didn’t happen at all.”
“No one wanted it to happen,” Virgil muttered. “It just did, and we have to accept that.”
“I don’t want to,” Roman complained weakly. “None of this is fair.”
There was no arguing that, and both of them knew it. Time kept passing by while the two considered everything. The topic could get distracted or happy, but eventually it would lead back to the car wreck. Evidently, it was going to be on their minds for a long time. Roman didn’t exactly enjoy the fact he couldn’t automatically move on, but tried to take what everyone had else said to heart. It was okay to acknowledge that the accident sucked without letting it control him, however long that took. Virgil left the room to sleep and suggested aggressively that Roman should do the same. He didn’t even notice that it was late until it was pointed out to him.
Lights were turned out, and Roman curled up in a fetal position under his blankets. He still felt kind of sore, more so than he did a few hours earlier. That also wasn’t fair, but whatever. Roman was supposed to be accepting things, so he could start healing. He moved around to try and get comfortable with little success.
Trauma was weird to Roman. One moment everything was fine until it wasn’t. One moment you could be having an entire mental breakdown over a small mistake with big consequences, and the next you’re under the covers like nothing had happened. But all of this was normal, and he was allowed to be like this. Allowed to react to the events that occurred. It would take a long time, and maybe that was okay too.

Reluctantly Rooming: Part Six
Link to Masterpost
I am... running low on prompts for this! I have one really good one I think I’m going to explore for part seven, and then a few more that go really well together a ways further into what I think the story here is going to be, but almost nothing to tie them together. I COULD just write out that story, but I have so loved responding to your prompts and they really have driven this story to what it is. Feel free to send more my way!
This chapter uses two prompts:
“You’re on level 176.” / “Can you judge me harder?”
and
“You’ve been replaced.” / “All right, we’ll see how you feel when you need me to kill a spider in the shower.”
Enjoy!
~*~*~
“You’re on… wow, level 176. How have you not gone insane yet?”
Aelin didn’t even turn to look at the speaker, too focused on the puzzle game she was playing on her phone. “Wow, Rowan, can you judge me harder? You know I’m so very into you judging me for the things I do to stay sane when I can’t even walk.”
“Damn, Aelin, you talk that way to every guy who walks through your door?” the voice laughed.
Finally setting her phone aside, she turned and shouted happily when she saw Sam standing there instead. “Gods, I’m sorry, I lost track of the time,” she said as she rushed—or hobbled, she supposed—to hug him.
“And you’ve gotten worse at telling voices apart,” he laughed. “I guess I should be flattered, though, if you really thought I sounded like Tall, Brooding, and Handsome.”
“You’re not even into men,” she protested.
“If anyone could persuade me, it’d be him. But that’s beside the point. You seriously forgot we moved Girls and Sam day over here so you wouldn’t have to get a ride?”
Aelin grimaced. “Uh, it’s been a long week?”
Sam snorted and shook his head. “Nice try. Some of us actually had to work this week.”
“Wow, rude.” Even as she was saying it Aelin tugged him to the couch. “You’re going to have to make that up to me, you know.”
“I know,” he grinned, holding up a small paper bag.
Aelin’s eyes widened and she snatched it from his grasp, tearing it open to reveal several bars of chocolate. “Gods, I love you.”
The sound of someone clearing their throat sounded behind them, and Aelin whirled around to find Rowan coming back from his afternoon run. “You do realize there are more rooms in this house than the living room for that, right? You’ve got options that won’t traumatize your roommate.”
Aelin blinked, and then began to laugh, clutching at the cushions of the couch to keep herself relatively upright. “Oh gods, you thought… you thought we…” She couldn’t even get all of the words out.
Sam decided to take pity on her, grinning over at Rowan. “That’s ancient history. Like, sophomore year of college ancient. We’re better off as friends.”
“Best friends,” Aelin added as she began to recover, holding up the chocolates as some sort of proof of their friendship. “You’ve been replaced, Rowan. You’ll just have to live with it.”
Rowan only shrugged. “All right,” he replied. “We’ll see how you feel about that when you need me to kill a spider in the shower.” Before she could say anything he was walking up the stairs and out of earshot.
When she turned to face Sam again, he was staring at her. “He’s been in your shower?”
“What? No, not like that,” she stammered. “The spider thing was one time.”
“I’m just saying, you never let me in your shower. You like him.”
The door opened again, and Aelin breathed a sigh of relief as Lysandra saved her from having to answer. “Are we feeling wine or whiskey?” she asked. “I brought both.”
Aelin frowned. “I’m feeling like if I say yes to either a hovering overprotective buzzard will come down the stairs and tell me it interacts with my pain medication,” she called pointedly in the direction of the stairs.
Her phone buzzed with a text alert almost immediately, and she read it with a laugh. “See?” she asked, holding the phone so they could read the screen:
Said overprotective buzzard would be absolutely correct and doing you a favor.
“Wow, who texts like that?” Lysandra asked.
“He does, apparently. And he can come say it to my face if he has something to say to me!”
Sam laughed beside her. “You tell him, Aelin.”
But the man upstairs remained remarkably silent in response, and her phone didn’t alert her to any further messages, so instead Aelin hobbled over to the kitchen and brought what was left of her brownies out of their hiding place.
“Wow,” Lysandra said when she saw them. “You actually bothered to cut them?”
“It’s not like I had anything better to do,” she replied. It was true enough; she certainly hadn’t been doing much, mostly because Rowan would glare at her until she was resting again if he felt she was overexerting herself. Feeling a flare of irritation at the memory, she promptly snagged one of the squares for herself and bit into it with a happy little sigh.
“All right, so when are we going to talk about the fact that you let your hot roommate into your shower?” Sam pressed.
“Wait, you what?” Lysandra leaned in, eager for details.
Aelin whined, head dropping into her hands. “For the last time, it’s not like that,” she protested. Still, though, she couldn’t help but remember the way he’d helped her into the bath the other day, how his words had been so rough but his hands so gentle on her as he’d…
Aelin yanked her mind away from that line of thinking, hoping she wasn’t blushing but strongly suspecting she was based on the heat she could feel in her cheeks. “You’re assholes and I hate you both,” she grumbled as they both started laughing.
“Oh, Aelin, we love you too,” Lysandra grinned.
“Besides, I couldn’t think of him that way anyway. Do you want to know why I really cut the brownies? He cut one out of the middle of the pan. And I know he doesn’t eat sweets, so I don’t think he even ate it. He’s a monster.” Aelin took the opportunity while she was venting to remind herself of all the reasons such thoughts were a terrible idea. Perhaps this time it would work.
At the very least, it was enough to convince her friends to drop the subject, and she would take what she could get in that regard.
~*~*~
Rowan didn’t emerge from his room until the others had left, and even then he was even quieter than usual as he took his now-customary seat in the armchair. That in itself was odd, but when she glanced over at him she found him looking back at her with an expression she couldn’t quite place.
“Take a picture; it’ll last longer,” she quipped, knowing the best way to get him to speak would be to try to get a rise out of him.
Sure enough, it worked. “You say that as though the very image of you isn’t seared into my retinas at this point.”
“I can’t tell if that’s rude or flattering.”
“Good.”
Aelin snorted. “Gods, are you one of those people who likes to think they’re all deep and mysterious?”
Rowan laughed in reply. “I am neither deep nor mysterious, trust me. You just haven’t asked.”
“All right,” she said. “Why are you staring at me then?”
“I wouldn’t call it staring, but I was just wondering if I’ll have to deal with any more exes you’re weirdly friendly with dropping by unexpectedly.”
“Oh.” This time, Aelin knew she was blushing. “No, Sam’s… Sam’s different. And we weren’t always friendly.”
“No?”
“Gods, no. We dated years ago, like he said. He was… a different person, then. He was going through a lot, and he didn’t really know how to handle it. We were over well before he broke up with me, I think.” Aelin smiled softly as she reminisced. “After that, I think it was… three years later? We were both working by then, and we happened to get hired by the same company. He tracked me down and told me everything. We both left Rifthold together eventually, and Lysandra came with us.”
Rowan shifted in his seat to look at her properly. “I didn’t know you weren’t always in Orynth. Aedion mentioned you were from here, but not that you’d had to move back home.”
Aelin’s smile turned sad. “You never asked.” After a moment, she realized that her words sounded too close to an accusation and rushed to continue. “I mean, I never asked anything about you either. I’m not trying to blame you or anything.”
“I’m certain I would deserve it if you did,” he replied.
“Hey, that’s enough being weirdly deep for one day.” Aelin paused for a moment, thinking about her next move. “What if I asked you one question about yourself, to make us even? Then we can go back to me watching my movie and you making fun of me like we usually do.”
Rowan shrugged, but looked somewhat wary. “Fine, I suppose.”
“Okay. I’m sure you’ve told me what you actually do for a living, or Aedion has, but I can never remember. So what is it?”
Her question was met with laughter, but his green eyes shone with relief. “That’s seriously what you want to know?”
“It’ll do for now.”
“Fine. I’m an editor. This whole time, and every time you’ve seen me working out here, I’ve been reading someone else’s book—or what will become their book, anyway—and tearing it apart so we can make it better.”
Aelin grinned. “Are you one of those mean editors? Like everyone’s least favorite high school English teacher, who makes everything bleed with red pen?”
“Spelling and grammar are usually taken care of for the most part before it gets to me. I just make notes in the margins about what parts of the story work and what parts don’t.”
“Mean notes?”
“Sometimes.”
Aelin finally smiled. “You know, I don’t know what I thought you did do, but that definitely wasn’t it.”
“I live to surprise,” he replied in the driest tone she’d heard from him all afternoon.
“Fine, then surprise me by not making fun of my movie tonight.”
She was met with only silence, Rowan clearly not finding her challenge worthy of a response. But he didn’t make even one sarcastic comment as the movie began, so she took it as a win regardless.
About halfway through, she glanced over at him to find his eyes once more on her. This time, however, she didn’t say anything. Instead, she only smiled.

just kind of need to vent some fears i have right now throwing this into the void style but
i know i desperately need to start therapy, have for a long time but i think i’ve realized this week why it scares me so much
it’s not that i’m so much afraid of sitting down and talking about...well, everything, but it’s that i fear my life getting better
i fear growing and healing and being happier because i don’t know what i’ll do when the next inevitable tragedy happens
i’m scared it’ll undo all my hard work or hit me ten times harder
i’m scared i’ll meet new people or even fall in love (fat chance) and something will go horribly wrong
after all, my parents both had pretty shitty lives for a long time but finally found happiness it seemed like and then...bam, worst fucking thing imaginable
and i get that that’s...life. i get that nobody gets to be happy and only ever be happy and i get that horrible things can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of whether they’ve happened before but i dunno
it just seems...safer this way?
like yeah, i’m deeply miserable and can’t wait to die but isn’t that better than actually enjoying life for a second only to be body slammed back into misery?
what if life’s got even more fucked up shit in store for me and i do all this goddamn work to overcome my trust issues and abandonment issues and just...all of it and then i just have something happens that’s almost as bad as the worst thing that’s ever happened to me?
i guess that’s...childish of me? stupid of me? silly and irrational? but i don’t know how to not feel that way when a massive part of my problem is that one day i woke up to a suicide by someone that promised me they’d always be there for me.
i already feel like i walk on eggshells all the time and am constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop
if i hear a loud noise downstairs i don’t think, “oh, someone probably dropped something” or even just “what was that?” i think “dead. they’re dead. someone just died and you’re going to have to see it”
and even with all of that aside like...what life am i even supposed to have?
my parents need me. my dad’s old and has a lot of health problems so i’ve been taking on even more responsibilities around the house and that’s only going to increase the older he gets
their relationship has...deteriorated. it’s not constant fighting but it’s been enough that it’s also got me on high alert and i’ve had to intervene several times because i don’t want either of them to say some shit that’s going to really hurt the other and i also just don’t want them yelling at each other
i genuinely worry about what would happen if i were to move out, i feel sometimes like i’m the only thing holding this all together and like...yeah, that’s not really fair to me but at the same time too...i would have ended my shit a long time ago had it not been for them so i feel like...what choice do i have but to stay? might as well, right?
if i’m too chicken shit to get better because i’m scared it’ll all fall apart anyway then i might as well just stay stagnant and stay here and just take care of them and try to keep the peace as long as i can and whenever they’re eventually gone i figure if life’s okay i’ll just ride it out until the end but if not...well.
idk. i know that the obvious answers are here and i know what anyone or any therapist would say if i were to say these things. that i need to just get over this and learn to want to live my life for myself and not worry as much about what’ll happen because that’s not my responsibility
but i feel like i already let down one person i really loved in the worst way so i owe to my family to do this, to stay here and to help out however i can
and yeah, it’s not ideal but it’s at least the devil i know so it feels better than the alternative
the downside is i know it’s going to cost me everything else
i know nobody wants a fucking sad sack who won’t get her shit together and isn’t going anywhere in life
i know i offer little to nothing because i can barely muster up the energy to be enthusiastic about my own interests and just generally speaking i suck
yeah, i’m good for a laugh here or there but apart from that? that’s about it
i can’t seem to form any hobbies or do any activities that might be fun because trying new things makes me suicidal as shit when it’s supposed to be like...fun, but it’s not
i feel like all i ever do is bitch and moan and nobody likes that, that gets old really fucking fast and i know that
i don’t blame anyone for giving up on me or losing hope because i did this to myself and nobody but me can get myself out of this and well...i don’t know if i can or if it’s even worth it
so i just...don’t really know what to do
and maybe this is just my very bad brain at the moment and when i go back on my ~medication i’ll change my mind and want to actually get better, regardless of how terrifying that is, but i’ve spent this entire week crying my eyes out because the thought of it just feels so fucking overwhelming and impossible
i dunno. i’m sorry to anyone who reads this because i know this is... a lot, but i’ve been holding this in for a long time and this entire past year has really been hard on me
i try not to talk about it because i know it’s a bummer and i know it just pushes people even further away from me, but i don’t think it’s helping just bottling it up and pretending like it’s not all i can ever think about and again...i genuinely don’t know if i can do the therapy thing because...yeah
i also just need to get this off my chest because i haven’t said it on here or to anyone but i also lost my dog a few months ago
i genuinely don’t know what happened to him, i think someone may have straight up stolen him because some people moved out of one of the houses near us and i know he’d been going over there sometimes so i’m not sure if that’s the case, if it is i just hope they’re taking good care of him because he’s a very sweet boy who doesn’t deserve anything bad to happen to him
we’ve looked everywhere for him and we don’t have those people’s information and even if we did i doubt they’d admit, “oh yeah, we stole your dog!” so i’m really not sure but naturally the last time i ever saw him i was trying to do some work outside and i needed to just get it done but he wanted to play so i told him to just wait until i was finished and then i’d play with him, so he wandered off and that’s the last time i ever saw him
i’ve felt like such a fucking asshole over it and i’ll scroll through my phone looking for something and see pictures of him and i just...can’t. i still keep hoping he’s just going to reappear one day, tail wagging and wanting a hug
it doesn’t have as much to do with everything else but it’s just kinda like...damn, dude.
oh, and my grandmother has lung cancer and doesn’t want treatment so there’s also that
my relationship with her has broken down pretty badly so i’m not horribly torn up about it but i know it’s going to be hard on my mom and so like...even more reason why i feel like i have to be here, y’know?
idk. it just kinda feels like my life isn’t really mine and maybe it shouldn’t be because i’m not sure i can handle it, i’m not sure i can handle it getting good only for it to possibly get really bad again and i know that there’s always the possibility of it just...being okay and that maybe bad things will happen, but they won’t be traumatic and awful but...taking that risk just feels impossible and ultimately i don’t know that it’s worth it because at the end of the day it’s...me.
i figure i already inflict myself on enough good people who only deserve good things and if i’m to fade into the background of my stagnant life then that’s probably for the best because all i do is make things worse and needlessly difficult even when i don’t mean to so it’s not like i really deserve to get better anyway
i’ve rambled enough and if i keep going it’s just going to get more whiny and pathetic so i’ll stop myself but i’m hoping maybe like i said if i can just...put these thoughts here then maybe i can make it through tomorrow without crying?
probably not, but it’s worth a shot, i guess. again, this may just all be temporary given my current mental state, but i’ve also been putting off therapy for a long time since before this week as is so...not sure that’ll really change any time soon. i had almost worked up to just doing the damn thing before the pandemic happened and then...well. feel like i might have missed my window of opportunity if i ever was going to do it because in some senses i’ve gotten better at managing all of this, i guess, but in other ways i feel like i’ve just fallen even further down the hole and trying to climb out feels like it’s guaranteed to just get me hurt even worse so i kind of want to just stay down here.
i’m trying not to give up completely or be totally hopeless about the whole thing, but at the same time...yikes!!!
#need to just brain fart for a second i apologize#this is kinda dark so please don't feel obligated to read#i'll probably delete this soon i just have another shitty work week coming up and if i want to make it thorugh#without completely losing my mind i at least need to kind of feel like i'm talking to an actual human being#because i am not capable of that at the moment

NATSUO TODOROKI STUDY / MASTERPOST .
This is also mostly ripped from discord so if it’s choppy that’s why ---
TRIGGER WARNINGS : DOMESTIC ABUSE, CHILD ABUSE, LOSS OF A SIBLING, ANGER ISSUES, BODY PERCEPTION ISSUES.
Natsuo is loyal. Literally he loves his family so much. like between natsuo and fuyumi, fuyumi has the stronger quirk 100%. Natsuo HAS an ice quirk but he can only freeze things that fit into the palm of his hand...so all he does is make the cola nice and cold before his siblings drink it.
So Natsuo wants to be a family practice doctor and he wants to do outreach work. Pretty much his coping mechanism with being ignored and hating being home is he threw himself really hard into studies, and just did his HW all night in his room. To tune out the yelling anf the negligence. He got good enough grades where he got into University of Tokyo which is good but like basically he almost didn't go bc like.
his relationship w enji is nonexistent. He was an immediate failure in his eyes, he literally SAID enji didn't look him in the eye ever until recently....he never rly saw him or hung around him. and then like. by the time touya was starting to rly get shit / by the time he was "dead" and shouto got burned and rei got sent away natsuo was only five or so. So to Natsuo? enji was just the guy who lived in his house and ruined his life basically. he hated him. he didn't love him at all. He’s hated him since he was a small child. NATSUO WILL NEVER FORGIVE ENJI AND HAS NO DESIRE TO.
Me and Inad have discussed it but because fuyumi is the only girl, Natsuo is the true middle child. The one who was never looked at or spoken to by Enji. And FUCK ENDEAVOR STANS for saying otherwise, but natsuo ISN’T “the only child who wasn’t abused” or the one who “should be the least angry”. Negligence IS child abuse.
As a kid, Natsuo had a stutter. He acted like a baby for a long time. He was also chubby as a kid -- ate a lot to cope. He was always bigger than Touya, and it continues into adulthood --- Natsuo is now. thick / buff. He was a chubby kid growing up, but now he works out and has muscle however he still also stress eats bc premed is hard and gains like 15 pounds during the school year, then loses it during breaks. it's just the way his body is. This is relevant because Natsuo does have extremely low self esteem -- he thinks he’s very plain looking, that his body is big and awkward and ugly (I have him as growing to be 6′6″ at his full height, taller than Enji), and it all stems from Enji’s negligence. At his core, because of his father, Natsuo believes there is absolutely nothing special about him and that physically and personally he is a worthless person.
Natsuo has anger issues unfortunately (as we’ve seen) but does judo to let it out. tbh he storms out of the house a lot because he doesn’t want fuyumi to see him fucking lose it.
me and inad discussed this but but natsuo HAS put a hole in the wall before and Like he was maybe 15 when that happened. it scared the shit out of fuyumi and he felt so upset he literally like. ran away for two days and when he came back he cried rly hard and promised she would never see him lose his temper like that again, so he storms out so she doesn't see him angry. It was the summer before he started high school and as soon as he got into high school he started getting into judo and joined the club for it and that's been his outlet ever since. And whenever he storms out of the house it’s to go do that. He's ashamed of reminding her of endeavor somehow. he knows he’s got enji’s hairstyle and body type, and that contributes to why he hates his appearance so much.
The reason he never brings his S/O around his house is honestly that... he doesn’t like himself when he’s home. ppl love 2 say natsuo has the least right to be mad because enji didn't "abuse him" but don't realize negligence is abuse. it's literally classified as abuse. he was literally born thinking his dad felt he was a disappointment to the point where he didn't talk to him or let him talk to his youngest brother and it HAS an effect on him. natsuo has a lot of self perception issues, he thinks he's ugly and he panics if he doesn't do things perfectly in school and just. is very easily made to feel inferior and puts himself down. he doesn't consider himself special at all. He believes he lacks intrinsic worth as a human being.
Natsuo only went to college after his sister told him to go and do what he wanted to do…I promise you he was going to not go at all and was going to stay home with her until she told him she wanted him to go. BECAUSE natsuo doesn't rly consider enji a member of the family at all, natsuo has this goofy lil quirk where he thinks he's the "man of the house" even tho he asks fuyumi for help with basic things!!! most of the time it's funny but it's honestly just him being protective of her. And natsuo does cope with some perceptions of toxic masculinity --- he’s NOT abusive at all himself, but he’s goofy in the sense that he thinks he has to be the New man of the house, has to take care of his sister, has to never cry or show weakness, all because he’s male.
ENJI TAKES NO PART IN PAYING FOR NATSUO’S TUITION. He doesn’t even agree to go until Fuyumi insists she will use her own money to pay for it, and Natsuo works and studies because he wants to pay her back for every cent someday. Endeavor DOES NOT EVEN KNOW natsuo’s current address or which exact school he attends. natsuo wants it that way, but it’s also important to note that Enji never bothered asking.
Honestly Natsuo and Fuyumi probably argue a lot about endeavor, But that’s okay because they still love each other. Natsuo knows fuyumi puts everyone above herself and rly wants her to be happy, which is why.......frankly.....he’s glad kenta barreled into their lives. Because he’s like this is something Just For Her and I hope she likes him and it works out.
continuing on natsuo hates heroes and he hates his dad and frankly if he had a strong enough quirk he would have probably become like dabi. he really would have and he truly hates endeavor that much.
sb: so u agree with stain? natsuo: idk i just want someone to kill my dad.
Natsuo doesn't forgive endeavor, doesn't fuck with him, and blames him for everything that went wrong in his family. He honestly wants him to die! and he HATES the hero industry bc a literal monster like his father is praised and rewarded and they HELPED COVER UP TOUYA'S DEATH!!!!
and like with natsuo + touya.... time for pain. “Touya told me everything” / “I still hear his voice constantly” ... i think about those quotes always every time i think of natsuo. natsuo was the closest with touya and I truly believe that. He loved him more than anything . He really loved touya so much and he never got over losing him.
kinda like inad hcs fuyumi saw shouto in the kitchen, i think natsuo saw touya last bc the way he describes touya telling him.... natsuo is shaking when he says it like. That shit traumatized him. And he’s just so angry. He did not leave touya. They had to PRY NATSUO OFF OF HIM. Because natsuo is loyal.
like me and inad hc that fuyumi wouldn’t tell Natsuo where rei was for years because she knew even at 9 years old, he would have snuck on a bus to see her. Natsuo is so loyal to his family he loves them so much. He would have done anything for them. He wouldn’t have left Touya. He wouldn't have let touya go without him there. Not anywhere he couldn’t follow. Not even as a child.
and natsuo would NEVER be able to juxtapose that dabi isn't touya. I think the first time he saw Touya he would know but it wouldn’t be like. An instant look. He’s probably seen clips of some of the shit he’s done on tape and it’s always given him this unsettling feeling. But then he looks in his eyes...and he knows his eyes.
I always picture it like Natsuo forgetting however dangerous the surrounding is and chasing after him, he doesn’t even know why he’s running; he knows he wouldn’t stand a chance against him. But he sounds like a child again when he says “Touya?”. He sounds like the annoying, chubby little brother that followed him everywhere. And yeah, he would simply need that confirmation that Touya is alive to take his side because he knows more than fuyumi did. Simply seeing him alive again, and I think he’d know EXACTLY what Dabi wanted to do with Enji.
Dabi trying to scare Natsuo and Natsuo just “Touya cut it out talk to me” / “Touya I’m on your side” and it’s because Natsuo could never EVER see Dabi as a monster once he knows it’s Touya. I don’t think he could ever feel fear based simply on the fact that he loved him that much. Touya was his favorite sibling he followed him around like a puppy and copied everything he did.
Touya is the sibling he was closest to and i think the same in reverse since Natsuo is the one Touya vented to. I think fuyumi was probably really shocked when they were kids and Natsuo would suddenly say he hated enji. that he wished he was dead. She’d gasp and be like "Natsuo!"
But he’s HATED HIS GUTS since he was a little kid. He didn’t grow to resent him either. He basically didn’t care about him/was afraid of him when he was super super young, but the moment touya’s quirk didn’t work out and he was like what, 7-10? I’d say like 7 or 8 when shit started just Not Working. Natsuo was probably 4 or 5 when his own quirk manifested and was weak. Had this initial “why doesn’t dad like me” phase, but Touya just told him once something endeavor did to him or why his skin is starting to scar, and Natsuo instantly went from fear to hate. There was no build he simply hated him from that moment on. That’s how loyal he is!
He said he hated endeavor for the first time when he was five, but anyway i think a lot abt how natsuo like.... has the least ties w them all. That's why I say he’s a true middle child because he doesn’t have anything he’s good at that binds him to the family or makes him especially important to anyone. Like...he CARES about and loves shouto of course but i think if fuyumi weren't there natsuo wouldnt be in the picture at all. He just wouldn’t talk to them. Especially before he started talking to shouto? Absolutely. After now that he talks to him he would definitely stay to hang around him but before?
unfortunately because enji KEPT SHOUTO AWAY FROM THEM i think about how natsuo probably had what inasa felt where he saw shouto's eyes and saw endeavor and like. kept up that distance because of the trauma (tm) and i think when shouto got some friends and got out the house he tried talking to natsuo and natsuo was like "wait...me? you're...talking to me?" and like as soon as shouto started trying to talk to him he was rly receptive and was like shit i have 15 yrs of info to catch up on.
but i rly think that's their relationship bc he literally didn't even know what kinda food shouto liked until now?? but he loves himand has become instantly very protective of him and once again things that because he’s the big brother he HAS to teach him things and be his “positive figure” and frankly I think shouto feels a little thrill whenever natsuo openly shittalks their father because out of all of them natsuo IS the one who hates him the most openly.

I guess I'd like to know if you have any advice on how to get over people who clearly don't want you in their lives? Like a lot of the time I'm okay, but then I feel the urge to come back, probably because I have literally nobody (I'm very wary of people and as such not good at meeting new people, and the ones I meet I always drive away a few months down the line anyway) and that can be lonely, but it's clear that they wanted me to leave and have no interest in ever seeing my face or hearing anything I say ever again. All they had to say was "You'll crawl back anyway 🙄". Like they don't want me, they hate me at best and feel completely indifferent towards me at worst, they never reached out to me, didn't check on me, they surely wanted to leave me anyway. But some part of me is like "What if you're a dumb bitch and just misinterpreting everything?" and like I know that that part is wrong and just saying shit because it's lonely and wants to annoy these people again even though that'd be selfish because they don't want me there. Plus even if it weren't selfish, I'm in the second to last year of school which means that in a year they'll leave me anyway and never talk to me again and if I got back with these people now it'd hurt me in a year again.
Also I feel like maybe it's important to say that a lot of these fallouts I have with people aren't directly related to BPD (I mean, some are, but not all) but instead to a trigger. I mean, I don't know if I should call it a trigger since technically I don't have diagnosed PTSD or CPTSD, but they're just things that make me remember traumatic memories that affect me a lot to this day and that shaped me as a person, and when I hear the phrase that makes me relive those things I usually get all anxious and my heart starts beating faster and I get hot flushes and I feel like I need to run away, like I need to run away from everything and everyone close to that phrase or it will happen again, like the situation will literally be recreated in real time by these people sooner or later, so I need to run away before it happens, I need to run because I'd rather die than go through all that again. So to others I suppose it looks like I freak out, start crying, either get really angry or look absent and start saying some wild shit (to me the things make complete sense because they're directly related to the things I went through, but I think that it may sound off-topic or nonsensical to others) and then it devolves into me apologising for no reason (my default response to someone doing something to me or blaming me for something is to apologise. In my life I've just learned that that's the best course of action to minimise the harm, along with just being quiet and taking everything), and then I just leave. Usually I don't show myself there / around the people ever again if those people and the place aren't something I have to be around. If it's like, family or school, I usually don't show up for a few months, often I just tell my doc that I feel totally like shit and suicidal and she sends me to a psych ward for like 3 months. I never really told anyone any of that because it's embarrassing. People already think that I'm a lunatic r*tard for having ADHD (not making this up. A part of my family literally thinks that I should be locked away specifically for that, and when I told some of my peers that I have ADHD, they literally said "You're a r*tard ? But you don't look like one! I thought you were smart!"), I don't need people laughing at me because I have some memories that probably wouldn't make others feel the way I do.
I am so sorry that there are cruel people in the world. I could rant about how they are the very thing they are calling you but ill save my breath. First I'd like to point out that you do not need to be diagnosed with PTSD or CPTSD to have triggers. Trauma affects us. Our minds are sensitive and take a long time to heal. It sounds like your trauma leads you to have panic attacks. I used to have that happen to me a lot, its lessened out now so I have maybe one or two a year.
I understand what you mean when you say that the person seems like they don't want you in their life, I've had people do that to me. But in all honesty, its so much better that they aren't in my life. I went through ups and downs when I left/they pushed me away. And I wanted to come crawling back to them. They knew I would and they wanted that because my person was a manipulative b*#$%. I know your person might not be the same as mine but if they don't wanna be in your life then they don't deserve to have you. You are amazing. And no one should be able to take that away from you or make you feel less.
I know its lonely not having friends. I suck at making friends. When I moved across the country for this person and for school I had no one. The person treated me like dirt. And I had no friends. Then I moved home and was excited to have my old friends again. Only to see they didn't care anymore. They had made other friends and wanted nothing to do with me. So I get it. But keep trying to make friends. My biggest thing for me is to be open with people about my mental health from the start. That way you see who stays a lot quicker in than if you were to not say anything till you felt attached. It still hurts to see people leave after you tell them but it hurts less. I know there are lots of jerks in this world but there are a few golden people left.
Now to answer your question of how to get over someone who doesn't want you. It is hard. It won't be easy to clear the hurt but its possible. Talking about to someone and explaining all the emotions helps. But when you don't have anyone who will listen or don't have a therapist then writing out everything is the best option. Write a letter to the person and vent everything you feel. Then you can send it or burn it. I did that a few times, and I burnt the letters. Other ways are providing yourself with some self care. Find something that helps you think clearly and calms you. For me its sitting next to the river near my home or sitting in a hot shower for an hour. It can be anything you find helps as long as its healthy.
I dont know if I answered your question or not but basically it will take time but small things will ease the pain. Don't bottle feelings and be willing to forgive. Forgiveness takes time, im still working on it after 1.5 years. But it will happen.
Thanks for asking and if I can help in anyway im just a message away. ❤

Amelia deserves every bit of happiness she gets. Yet another Grey's Rant. _______________________________
As usual I'm rewatching Grey's and avoiding my responsibilities and I recently watched the episode where she brought a patient to Derek to work on and I suddenly had all sorts of flashbacks about what she went through, and it was some crap.
____________________________________________
First there's her time in private practice where she lost both her son and her boyfriend. (That alone is a huge pain.)
____________________________________________
Then there's the horrible way Derek treated her when she first arrived on the show, after he gave her the job to move away to work for the president. (I loved Derek but the way acted after returning and seeing he had to work under her was truly obnoxious.)
____________________________________________
She had the whole confusion with the woman who recognized her and knew she used to have a drug addiction then decided to publically broadcast it to the whole hospital, outing her to her mostly uninformed co workers and almost ruining her reputation as a surgeon.
____________________________________________
When Derek died Meredith was just awful to her and yes I know Meredith was grieving Derek, but yelling at his SISTER who also lost her loved one and accusing her of trying to steal his life was awful. ____________________________________________
Not many of them believed that she could remove Dr. Herman's tumor and acted like she was in way over her head, or once again trying to be like Derek. ____________________________________________
When Penny joined their dinner party everyone kept shushing her when she tried to express what she felt except for Owen. And it was clear that she was really upset and needed to vent as much as Meredith did but everyone was all concerned about Meredith only, (except Owen.)
Sometimes I feel like they all sweep under the rug that Amelia was his sister. She went through a traumatic experience with him and he was basically the only one in the Shepherd family who cared for her besides her father who was shot and killed and now he died too. She deserves the right to grieve. I feel like she never gets to do it, not without someone acting like she didn't have the right the feel the hurt Meredith does. (If I were in the situation and my sister died I'd probably act worse than any husband would, with how much I love her.)
Then there's the situation with Owen, while he wasn't right for her anyway the ridicule she got from Meredith again was distasteful and quite frankly uncalled for, I hated the way it went down.
On her wedding day when none of her family showed up and she was was crying begging her mother to show up broke me, I was pissed and heart broken for her. It broke again when she had her melt down and confronted Meredith.
____________________________________________
She then had the removal of a brain tumor which apparently they were trying to blame all of her crazy behaviors on.
____________________________________________
Then she had to endure the whole mess with Owen, getting divorced, then getting back together (kinda) then Teddy showing up pregnant and all the nonsense until the amazing Link and now their new baby boy.
____________________________________________
I'm probably missing some but these were the first ones that came to my mind or at least the ones that bothered me the most.
____________________________________________
Did she have major issues or flaws? Yes, but doesn't everyone at Grey's have some? They always treated her like she was nuts especially her family, even Derek was a little standoffish at first in that episode when she brought him that patient from her plane trip over.
I don't know about anyone else but if I had witnessed my dad's death I'd be a little nuts too. Derek seemed ok for the most part but everyone processes grief in their own ways.
____________________________________________
So Today's Rant is really just all about how Amelia Shepherd deserves all of the happiness in the world, and how Meredith really did resent her at first lol, most of these points include the way Meredith used to treat her. (I should probably put a disclaimer stating that this isn't to bash Meredith to avoid people coming for me, I love Mer, but the honest truth she was awful to Amelia at first.)

some (very long) Hiro metas and a Kisa-n-Tohru tangent
seeing the "Hiro is a brat!" "Hiro just has trauma!" debate has made me ponder…
Like, not to compare trauma and argue who had what worse and invalidate suffering, but my immediate reaction was kind of, "Wait, what? I mean, okay, I guess Hiro did just have some trauma re: Kisa, but like, overall…???"
So it's time for some scrutiny!
I’mma talk myself through this in a post.
Here we have Hiro. He's a Souma, which is pretty damn traumatic in its own right, and possessed by a Zodiac spirit, which is even worse. He's part of an elite inner circle, privileged with status and wealth; but on the flip side, there's still people in the family who look down on the Zodiac, and Hiro's looking at a future of isolation (afraid of looking like a monster, afraid to betray the family secret, not properly free to pick his own job, may or may not be able to live outside the estate, love life is gonna be a disaster when puberty hits). And Akito, whom the possessed part of him loves deeply and desperately, tends to weaponize his own love and withhold it when someone displeases him, or turn hurtful when someone needs punishment.
Okay, so that's bad. But Hiro shares that with all of the Zodiac members, that's just the baseline trauma, and there's some compounding issues at play that Hiro lacks:
- Hiro, as the Sheep, isn't especially hated. Kyou, for instance, has a bad attitude that's partly due to the entire clan ragging on him for being a horrible abomination of a monster, comparing him unfavorably to Idealized Yuki, and telling him he's gonna be locked up in a one-room house on the estate to suffer out his life--and that's not even counting how being the Cat affected how his immediate family treated him. Haru, as the Ox, got ~harmlessly teased~ about being a big dumb slow stupid ox by the family so much that he started flipping over to a Black personality to violently vent his feelings.
- Hiro's family life is, as far as I can tell, actually ideal. His parents didn't reject him (Momiji, Kyou re: his sperm donor, Rin), split up over him (I suspect this is what happened for Kagura, because her parents argued a lot when she was young, and I wonder about the fact that Ritsu's dad isn't at the onsen? And there's no mention of Kisa's dad? But then again, we're told repeatedly that Yuki and Ayame have a father and he lives in the same house as their mother and I've never seen proof of this man's existence), be coolly indifferent to him (Ayame after Yuki was born and he got off the hook but honestly I think that was a blessing to him, Yuki, Hatori), or get extremely overprotective (Kyou re: his mom, I'd argue this is partly why Ritsu's mom is so stressed out, and also I'd argue this may be why Kisa's mom hits her limit). In fact, Hiro's the only one who we can definitely say has two parents, who live together, and have a good relationship, and actively enjoy nurturing their child. Also Satsuki's completely adorkable. (This puts strain on Hiro in other ways, lol, but at least he shares that feeling with his dad.)
- Hiro, as the Sheep, probably doesn't particularly stand out. I'm guessing his hair color isn't particularly notable? So he probably hasn't been singled out for teasing from people who don't even know about the curse, like Kyou and Haru and Kisa. (No one's not-thirsty enough to have teased Ayame or Yuki for their looks, I'm pretty sure, and Momiji can pull the biracial card, even if that wouldn't stop people, and went to international school, where people probably found other ways to pick on you.)
So where, for Hiro, does his particular extremely combative, condescending, scathing, sarcastic attitude come from?
That's not to say none of those things above could be factors. It's extremely possible that the family found dumb things to say to him because, y'know, clearly it's impossible to hurt a kid's feelings if you're arrogant enough about it. And like Kyouko says, you can't really judge someone's family situation based on their behavior, and vice versa. I'd expect Hiro to be super well-adjusted, coming from a loving nuclear family, but kids are people and they will turn out how they turn out both because of and in spite of how they're raised. And maybe Hiro's experienced some bullying about whatever, and his instant sharp-tongued retorts became the default in response to that. Hiro didn't tell us any of this, but who knows!
Or maybe Hiro's difficult phase is just a phase. Maybe that's how all his classmates talk to each other?? I can easily see that being a thing, especially with boys, both friendly with friends or aggressive with people you want to treat badly, and maybe Hiro's so much in the habit of it that he doesn't think first (and doesn't care enough about Tohru and her feelings to exercise a little self-control). Like this post that points out how it's a Definite Thing that part of Hiro's lording-little-brat arrogance is because he's in his final year of elementary school and he's everyone's senpai and that sort of thing is indulged because adults know he'll get cruelly humbled next year when he's a baby kouhai.
But I think maybe, what's most relevant with Hiro, is that because of his lack of obvious outside factors to fight against for personal growth, his growing pains as a character are internal. He's fighting against himself. AKA, it's only logical that he's a tiny little shit and his character arc is about growing into someone who isn't a jerkface. Which can be just as difficult and traumatic as standing up to your parents, or Akito, or society, or your classmates. Hiro has to assert himself against himself, and himself won't punch him in the face or lock him in his room but it's so easy to just put the blame elsewhere and let himself get away with it and give him a pass and stop trying to improve.
Now I wanna analyze the timeline!
Aside from a few select Zodiac members, Akito hasn't really done anything super terrible that we've heard about until Hiro's in 3rd grade. That's when Hatori and Kana ask to get married, and Hatori gets injured. Akito has been a jerk before, and Akito is very clearly in favor of a hierarchy that puts God at the top getting all the love. But Shigure and Ayame have talked about their sexcapades with no issue, and Kagura's always going on about her undying love for and future marriage with Kyou, and this is the first incident that says those things aren't allowed.
Sometime not terribly long after that, Shigure gets kicked out of the Main House. This ramps up Akito's hatred of women, though Hiro wouldn't know the betrayal behind it and might not have a clue about Akito's vendetta.
Right about the time Hiro starts 6th grade, he feels compelled to tell Akito that he has feelings for Kisa. (I'm pulling this from the Collector's Edition timeline. In the actual story I keep seeing the English being like "I always thought Hiro hated me / I thought Hiro hated me for a long time" with Kisa then immediately turning around and saying "We were bffs all through my elementary school years / Hiro always played with me until this year", so I heavily suspect the translators keep getting a modifier in the wrong place or something because wtf.) Akito kicks Kisa's ass and Kisa takes two weeks to heal. (This isn't Akito's fault. It's also not Kisa's fault, obviously, because Hiro didn't even tell her yet that he liked her. So that means it's all Hiro's fault.) Hiro's horrified, because he could have had an idea this would be bad but he probably didn't expect it to all be taken out on Kisa. After all, Hatori got hurt, not Kana, and Rin hasn't been pushed out a window yet.
Hiro abruptly cuts off his interaction with Kisa, to protect her from getting punished by Akito again. Kisa goes back to 7th grade, where she's just transitioned from Top Of The Heap Senpai and Just A Child So We Can Let Things Slide to Lowly Kouhai Who Needs To Learn Proper Social Behaviors, and she's being bullied, and her bff won't talk to her, and her Talking Things Out skills are having zero effect, so she just stops talking, and now her mom is upset, and then she starts skipping school, and now her mom is really upset. And Hiro was probably unaware of a lot of this, until it got really bad several months in, since he stopped seeing his bff.
And Hiro's agonizing and worrying about it, when suddenly Tohru swoops in and magically saves the day, bringing hope where there was none and erasing suffering, right when Hiro was probably nerving himself up to try to help somehow without bringing Akito's wrath back down on Kisa.
Oh I wanna have a tangent about Kisa!
Timeline again, but from Kisa's point of view:
Kisa and Hiro are only a year apart, so they've always been super close. Hiro is her bff.
Now Kisa is starting 7th grade.
Kisa does something Bad. It's not clear what, but it's Bad Enough to make Akito hate her and also seriously beat her up, so that's Pretty Bad.
Actually it's Really Very Bad, because after that Hiro hates her too.
Anyway Kisa's starting 7th grade! Yay! New school, new girls, new pressures. In my personal experience, middle school is when girls are at their nastiest (after they hit high school, they start to chill out. Obviously you still get jerks, because people, but there was a little more "live and let live" attitude), so I always assume this is part of the problem. Kisa's classmates start to bully her. Kisa tries out her conflict resolution skills, like the adult she's expected to be becoming, and it only causes the situation to escalate. Her self-esteem has already had the crap kicked out of it, and hasn't healed in 2+ weeks. Her bff hates her and won't talk to her.
And then Kisa just gives up without telling anyone why.
Tohru's got a very valid point, that it's hard to talk about the things that actually bother you. It's hard to ask for help. I can complain all day long about little things, but I can't put big issues into words without spontaneously bawling? Which is really fricken embarrassing???
But I think the reason Tohru strikes such a chord with Kisa, and is able to instantly win her over, is because she talks with such quiet feeling about being scared her mom wouldn't love her anymore. Because that feeling was very, very real for Tohru--grounded in the fact that Kyouko actually did abandon her once.
And Kisa recognized that, and realized that Tohru--unlike everyone else--actually got it, because that's exactly what Kisa's feeling. Because Kisa's gotten along with her mother very well all her life, if what we see of her with Hiro is any indication. Except that suddenly Akito hates her. Suddenly Hiro hates her. It's a very real fear, once Kisa's mom starts getting stressed about the not-talking, that Kisa's mom is going to stop loving her just like everyone else is suddenly doing. Because that's literally what's happening to Kisa.
Tohru's not just a warm, loving, accepting, motherly presence. Tohru's someone who can very viscerally relate to Kisa's terror. Of course Kisa clings to her.
Back to Hiro though!
I think we could also stand to apply to Hiro the tried-and-true, "The things you hate most in other people are the things you hate most about yourself," because it is both true in general and a definite thing Fruits Basket does (for a quick example, see Yuki saying he hates dependent people [while Kyou's like "that's you tho"] and Rin hating Yuki [because he's dependent on Haru the way she is guiltly dependent on Haru]).
I went to rewatch the episode to look at all the specific things Hiro says about Tohru and other people, only to realize the obvious flaw that like everything he says is an insult and there's too much there for me to unpack here, so I chose just a few statements that were really specifically phrased (I can't stand people who X).
I can't stand people who let themselves be pushed around so easily
Hiro also talks a couple times about Tohru having no sense of identity or agency, or not having thoughts of her own. So this reveals Hiro's inner struggle with his own complacency. He's got that bond with Akito, he's got a life that's at least partly set in stone already for him, and he's not doing anything to fight it. He didn't hide his feelings for Kisa from Akito, and then when Kisa got hurt Hiro never told her why ("It's my fault because I told Akito I like you and that made him mad, it's nothing you did") and never called Akito out on it (he can't blame Akito but when he talks about it you can tell he also knows he should blame Akito because Hiro can figure out that that was wrong. Maybe because, unlike so many others of the Zodiac, he was raised in a sensible and loving family and he knows that Akito's behavior isn't normal, isn't right, isn't acceptable).
This is probably why, even while using "I'm just a kid" to get away with his behavior, he's so frustrated with not being an adult. Because, to him, an adult wouldn't just let these things happen. He's wrong, on one hand, but on the other hand the maturity that will come with his personal growth will let him be the kind of adult he envisions.
I can't stand inconsiderate people
Hiro knows he's a jerk. He knows his snappy retorts piss people off--he enjoys that. He's super jealous about Tohru and doesn't care about her feelings, and him taking his anger out on Tohru has been hurting Kisa's feelings and that hasn't caused Hiro to check himself yet either.
He knows this, he hates this, he's not ready to deal with it yet and exercise self-control, so he's the niceness police about other people being rude.
(I think it's interesting that, when Hiro starts maturing, even though he still has that tendency to rudeness, there's also a hint that it will one day turn into a frankness that isn't just "a blunt insult is the same as honesty right?" That time when Hiro realizes that Kyou and Tohru have Feelings and he's like "Um, wait, is that okay? Are we just not going to talk about the fact that Kyou is going to be locked up alone in a room for the rest of his life???" He asks the tough questions lol. I won't give him credit for bringing up Tohru's dad issues because he was just doing that to be a dick, there was zero maturity there. In another world, though, he would've been the only other person besides Kyou [who already knew the details] to think to question Tohru about it.)
People who whine about their situation while accepting no responsibility are so irritating
Again...Hiro hates the whole situation that happened with Kisa, and hates his part in it, and didn't do anything to fix it before Tohru came along. And even then, he still hasn't fessed up to Kisa about the real circumstances. He knows he owes Kisa that, and he hasn't taken responsibility yet.
This ties into the complacency issue, but with the added fact that Hiro's said it's shitty and unfair but still is going along with it without trying to stop it. So he's an extra jerk, but he still hasn't stepped up yet.
I think maybe this is why Tohru's speech touches him, even after he just called her out on magical Mary Sue emotional healing powers. He's been nothing but his worst self around Tohru--bad enough that it's not only just Tohru but Kisa he's been upsetting as well--he's been bratty and insulting and pushed Tohru around and stolen her property and treated her like shit and--
And instead of rolling her eyes, or getting fed up and firing back, or any other response that show her low expectations for Hiro…
Tohru just stands there and says it's brave, to admit you have flaws, and that she has faith that he can and will make good on his responsibilities. Even though nothing at all that Hiro's done--and he's very well aware of this--gives any indication that he would even try. Let alone succeed.
The way that Hiro, when people call him a brat, tends to then embrace it and get even brattier--this makes me think he's the kind of kid who lives down to people's expectations, rather than trying to prove them wrong. So when Tohru without hesitation sets the bar high like that, and it pisses Hiro off--
He's gonna show you, stupid woman. You think he's a prince? You're gonna be floored at the kind of prince he'll be.
(Eventually. Much later.)

Indy’s Stories
Part 3: A Good Gesture Goes a Long Way Mate.
Why did Indy think that this was a good idea? She sat in a slightly crowded pub looking down at her 3rd drink and still her nerves were off. She signed, she hasn’t move a single inch since she arrived. Hoping to get a little buzz in before she could look for someone to ‘Vent’ too but that has proving to be harder than she thought. How do people do this? She was so lost in her thoughts that she hadn’t noticed a man stumbling towards her.
“Oy, you. What’s ah nice place like you…..Doing in a girl like dis.” Obviously he’s drunk, Indy didn’t need to look at him to know. The strong smell of alcohol was all over him. Indy ignored him hoping he’d just move on but luck wasn’t in Indy’s favor. Once again the drunk man spoke only this time he was too close in Indy’s personal space.
“Oy don’t ignore me!!!!! You.....you bitch!” He yelled. Now this had gotten the attention of some people around. The man attempted to grab Indy’s arm but before Indy could gladly smash her glass against the guys bloody head he was yanked away and pushed in the opposite direction. Indy or more of the drunk idiots savor was now standing in front of her. It was a woman. She was speaking to the man before he stumbled away muttering angrily.
‘Wow! She’s pretty’ Indy pushed her thoughts out. The woman was looking at the man before she turned to face her. Yep she was definitely pretty. Indy turned away back to her drink, her hand was gripping tightly on her glass. Repeatedly telling herself to calm down, her temper spiked because of the drunken fool.
“Thanks for that. If not for you the moron was going to have a face full of glass.” Spoke loud enough for the woman to hear. The woman moved in closer before speaking.
“Normally I try staying out of trouble but I’m not so good at it and I hear the commotion. May I?” She pointed to the empty stool next to Indy. She gave the woman a nod. By now Indy’s temper lowered and her grip relaxed before she drank the rest of the strong liquid in her cup. She grunted at the taste. The woman looked at her and she chuckled.
“Never seen you around here?” She said, she looked at Indy as if she was studying her. It made Indy a little cautious. The woman was a Burnette, her hair was pulled into a ponytail, her eyes dark brown. for some reason she looked familiar somehow but Indy doesn’t recall ever meeting this woman. It was quite odd for Indy. They ordered a round.
“Well, I use to come here a lot but I’ve been away for 8 months so that probably explains why I’ve never seen you here either.” Telling herself to keep her Business on the low. She didn’t want to get into detail especially if Indy didn’t know that person but this woman? She had this aura about her that made Indy feel like she can trust her with no judgment but at the same time had Indy feel like she had to be on her toes. Very odd indeed, Indy never experienced that before.
“8 months? That seems like a long time away from home.” The woman said. She paid for the drinks, much to Indy small protest. Home? Indy hasn’t felt home in a long time. All of her worries came rushing back. ‘Shit....’she wanted to forget but how can she if she’s constantly being reminded. Anything was better then to face her family…..Even the company of this pretty woman was more welcome than the thought of what she’d have to face. Indy didn’t realize she was making faces before she hung her head, she signed again ‘lord how many times I’ve done that’. The woman seen the frustration in Indy’s face, it was one of the reason she came to her. The drunken idiot was the excuse the get closer to Indy. She seen Indy at the bar and didn’t think much of her at first. She stared at her back for almost two hours. Not a single movement from Indy. Normally if a woman is in a pub too long alone things tent to get out of hand sometimes and that’s what this woman was worried about. She waited to see if Indy was waiting on someone but no one came. The woman was with friends at first but they since been gone. Clearly anyone can feel that Indy wasn’t in the best spirit so why not help ease some of this frustrated girls pain.
“You know frowning puts a lot of strain on your facial nerves. Try to ease up there. You only live once.” Trying to make Indy smile with little Success. Indy looked at the woman, her buzz was definitely kicking in.
‘You’ve got this Indy’ she told herself. She wasn’t sure when the buzz started but it was doing it’s job right. She felt a little better, a little more willing. Maybe this was the perfect time to vent. Who knows Indy might get some peace of mind in the company of this interesting woman.
“I guess I’ve been straining them for some time now.” She smiled a little. The woman rested her head on her hand as if she was waiting for Indy to continue. Indy took a sip of her drink again.
“Things haven’t been going my way and I don’t know what to do.” She said, looking at her hand that held her glass. She focused on the small scars on her hand, some faint and old, some new and more visible but small. Each one she remembered how she got them. Some where from her climbs and some where from fights she encountered on her journeys. The woman noticed and she wonder, she was curious but knew not to ask, she too had scars she’d much rather forget about.
“And have you done anything about it?” She asked, she drank from her cup.
“Honestly...... I’m scared shitless. I’ve never been good at family stuff. I’ve been on my own for a while now and this is something new.” The mention of family had put a small frown on the girl’s face. Indy had picked up on it.
“I’m sure 8 months isn’t too bad to explain.” The woman order another round only this time Indy beat her to the pay. She smiled and thanked her.
“It’s actually 16 years since I’ve seen them.” This shocked the woman.
Indy wasn’t sure when the room started spinning or how hot she’d become but she wasted no time removing her jacket. They had talked for a good two hours yet the odd thing was they have never introduced themselves. Indy felt relaxed and was enjoying the girl’s company. She could tell the woman was well educated.
“What’s your name?” Indy was starting to slur. ‘Shit...’ she didn’t mean to cut the girl off from whatever conversation they were having. Indy had no idea she had said that out loud. She apologized but the girl didn’t mind at all, she too was curious. The girl extended her hand out to Indy.
“I’m Lara. Lara Croft.” Indy shook her hand
“Nice to meet you Lara. I’m Alexandra Alister or Alex.” But once again Lara’s face change when Indy offer her real name. She must have known of an Alex? ‘Wonder what happened?’ Indy felt bad for making Lara look down. Indy wasn’t so sure if it was a wise idea because something about Lara Croft sound so familiar but where did Indy know this woman from? Her intoxicated mind didn’t care much about the potential consequences that might come back to kick her in the ass.
“But my friends call me Indy if that helps, I actually prefer Indy Over my real name anyway.” Indy said, she smiled at Lara hoping to ease her discomfort and it had worked, Lara smile back before her face changed too confused.
“Wait! Did you say Alister? You’re an Alister?” She too had a slight slur. Now it was Indy’s turn to look confused.
“Yeah? Why?”
“Then that means your grandfather is Cedric Alister. He’s famous for his studies and expeditions on Indian history. I’ve read his books when I was back in college.” Lara ranted on about Cedric’s findings. This perked Indy’s interest more. Knowing someone spoke highly of her grandfather made Indy happy inside. Her grandfather was the reason she loved history, loved exploring. Then her memories started to resurface even the traumatic ones. Ones of her mother passing and then her times in the orphanage. Lara pulled her back.
“I’ve read an article about the tragedy of your family years ago. I’m sorry about your mother, she was so young. But it mentioned in reports that there was only one child of Vanessa Alister though.” She looked at Indy confused.
“She does have one biological daughter, she’s my sister Avery. I was adopted a year after Avery was born. Her father gave up custody and sent her to Cedric.”
“And what about you?” Lara looked a little frightening waiting on the answer. Indy looked away for a minute to gather her bearings. Too drunk to feel any sort of anger, she looked back at Lara.
“I was sent to Scotland to an orphanage. I wasn’t part of the bloodline so the bastard didn’t need me.” The sting in her eyes, she knew she saying too much but Indy didn’t care, she could always blame it on the alcohol. She felt the hurt in her chest, it was tight making it hard to breathe. She’d never admit it sober but Indy was always hurt because of that night. It scared her on how easily one person can rip you out of their lives without a second guess. That had always Haunted Indy, it was why she kept only a small handful of trusted people in her life. Why it was so hard to let people in. She was still healing from the wound that man burned in her soul. Lara changed the subject after seeing how quickly Indy retreated back into her shell.
“I’m sorry. How about this.” Lara took out her phone and clumsily handed it to Indy.
“Can I have your phone number? You seem like a good person to know and I don’t mind helping with your family ordeal.” After her 3rd attempt to correctly type her number she past the phone back to Lara.
“Are you secretly a therapist?” Indy laughed a little.
“God, no. I’m actually an archeologist.” Lara said. ‘Archeologist? Interesting.’ Unfortunately they didn’t get too into their conversations as the bartender announced closing. Indy looked at the clock above the bar, 3am it showed. Indy stood up from her stool, wobbled a bit but she held onto the counter and steadied herself. Lara failed miserably to suppress a small chuckle before she herself stood. She was a bit more sober then Indy, having only drank two of her drinks to not overdue her buzz. She and Indy made their way out the pub and into the chilly streets of London. The cold crisp air helped ease the dizziness in Indy’s head, it was good enough for her to walk without losing her balance. Lara stop at the corner street along side Indy. Smiling at her new companion, Lara stuck out her hand for Indy to grab.
“Well it was a pleasure meeting you Indy, are you sure you’re fine going home by yourself? I could walk with you?” She shook Indy’s hand.
“No.... It's fine I literally live two blocks away.” She pointed at the opposite direction where they had stopped. After reassuring Lara that she really was ok to walk home alone and if it made Lara feel better she’ll text her when Indy got safely inside. But remembered that she didn’t have Lara’s number. She called out to Lara .
“Wait! I don’t have your number.”
Lara was already on the other side the street before she turned to Indy. Trying to focus on what Lara was doing, Indy saw her dig in her pocket to pull out her phone. Shortly after Indy’s phone buzz and a number showed. She pick it up.
“You have it now.” Lara laugh on the other end of the line.
“Yeah, thanks. ” Indy said, she gave Lara one last look and wave before she hung up and went her separate way.
Finally home, Indy stripped out her jacket and shoes. Too drunk fully change out of her clothing, she sent Lara a text stating she made it home. Finally reaching her bed, she let her body fall into her soft sheets and was fast asleep before Lara’s reply went through.

Teen Wolf, season 3, Stiles has a crush on Derek, mentioned Derek/Ms. Blake
As Derek and Ms. Blake—“Jennifer, or Jen, actually, if you guys want”—slowly take their togetherness public, Stiles finds himself on the receiving end of more than a few sympathetic glances and one strange conversation with Danny. And Scott. And Allison. And Lydia. And...Peter. Or, The One Where Everyone Tells Stiles to Hang in There, Baby, but He's Really Not Sure Where There is, or What He's Supposed to be Hanging On To.
--
Stiles really couldn’t go anywhere in the school without hearing about it.
“Wait, our totally adorkable English teacher is going out with Derek ‘I’m Really Hot, But Also Might Be a Serial Killer’ Hale?”
“Yes, they were drinking milkshakes! They were actually drinking milkshakes and eating burgers and fries like we’re in ‘Happy Days’ or something! I almost died!”
“That is so super cute and also really gross; I don’t want to think about my teachers’ sex lives.”
“Hm, that’s really tough, because, Derek Hale is…Mmm.”
“Oh, he’s very ‘Mmm’.”
Stiles slammed his locker shut, “Just to clarify, ladies, are we talking ‘Mmm…donuts’ or is it more of a Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup ‘Mmm-mmm, good’?”
The two girls just stared at him before shaking their heads and walking away.
“Good talk,” Stiles called after them, rolling his eyes.
It was all over school by third period, “totally adorkable” Ms. Blake was going out with Derek Hale, who, even though he was arrested on suspicion of murder, was still really, really hot.
“It’s like a bad dream,” Stiles moaned, “No one will stop talking about it.”
--
At lunch, Danny sat with Scott and Stiles, of his own free will, sans Lydia and the others from the lacrosse team, even Ethan was nowhere in sight, and without any blackmail on Stiles’ part.
“Hey. Danny.” Stiles said awkwardly, raising his eyebrows at Scott to try to figure out exactly what was going on. Scott shook his head, but greeted Danny just the same.
“Hey, man, what’s up?”
“Actually, I wanted to talk to Stiles, Scott, would you mind?”
Stiles perked up, his eyebrows raising high, “Talk to me, like talk to me, like, like, talk-talk?”
Danny immediately looked as if he regretted sitting down, but slowly shook his head, “I mean, talk as in have-a-conversation talk, not…whatever you’re thinking of.”
Scott was looking between Stiles and Danny with an uneasy smile, only getting up when Stiles gave him a slight nod that it was alright.
“I’ll be back later, I guess. See you soon-ish?”
Stiles waved Scott off and turned back to Danny with a huge smile on his face.
“So, are you gonna ask me out—”
“No!” Danny backtracked, “I mean, you know I’m with Ethan, right? And that thing in the locker room was just a joke, I was kidding.”
“I was desperate and you took advantage of that. Gotta say, not your finest moment.”
Danny sighed, “Well, here’s my formal apology: I’m sorry, Stiles, for using your desperation as a means to entertain myself.”
“Thank you, and by the way, you missed out on an awesome cuddle-session, so, you know, your loss.”
Danny shook his head, “This is not what I came over here to talk about, how did we get so off-track?”
“It happens sometimes,” Stiles shrugged. “Usually around me.”
“Anyways, I wanted to talk to you about,” Danny looked around the cafeteria and leaned in closer, “Derek Hale.”
Stiles leaned in closer too, a bit too much, as it made Danny jerked his head back, “Derek Hale, why? Did Ethan say something about him? Did you hear Ethan talking about him?”
“What? Why would Ethan be talking about Derek Hale—who, by the way, is totally not named Miguel and definitely not your cousin, don’t think I hadn’t figured that out.”
Stiles kept his face as blank as possible, “I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’re still a horrible person, Stilinski,” Danny said, sounding far too much like Jackson for Stiles’ comfort, “But, oh my god, this is still not what I came here to talk about!”
“Okay,” Stiles leaned back, “Promise, no more interruptions from me.”
Danny let out an exasperated sigh and lowered his voice even further, “I just wanted to let you know, even though this is not my place at all to say this—that a relationship with an older man never works out. Especially when you’re in high school. I’ve been there and it was awful. You’d do much better with someone your own age especially since you’re not even out yet, fully, and if you wanted,” Danny continued in a long-suffering tone, “I could, maybe, set you up with someone—”
Danny glanced up to see Stiles’ mouth hanging open, a half-masticated bite of hamburger in full view.
“Or, you could just wait till college to date guys, or anybody,” Danny said under his breath, sliding his tray from the table and going back over to sit with Ethan, who looked like he was trying, very poorly, not to laugh. His brother, sitting across the cafeteria with Lydia, wasn’t even bothering to hide his laughter.
Stiles still had his mouth open even when Scott had sat back down and forcibly closed Stiles’ mouth himself.
“So, what did Danny want to talk to you about?” Scott asked, reaching once again to close Stiles’ mouth. When Stiles still hadn’t responded, Scott lightly slapped him on the cheek.
“Ow!”
Scott looked at him sheepishly, “Sorry, you were stuck.”
Stiles swallowed and reached up to tug at his hair, like he was trying to wake himself up, “I just had the weirdest conversation.”
Scott looked behind him at Danny, who was trying to get his boyfriend to calm down with an unamused expression on his face.
“What exactly was Danny talking to you about?”
“He was warning me of the dangers of having a romantic relationship with an older guy.”
“Oh,” Scott looked down at his lunch quickly, “That’s…nice of him.”
Stiles furrowed his eyebrows, “Yeah, really nice of him, very pre-emptive since I am definitely not dating an older guy.”
Scott started shifting his corn around his plate, “He was probably just trying to make you feel better, you know, about…”
Stiles waved his hands back and forth, “About what, Scott? If you know something about my life that I am apparently not aware of, please let me in on it!”
“That,” Scott sighed loudly, “That Derek and Ms. Blake are seeing each other, and everyone’s talking about it and it’s not easy to listen to, especially when you…”
“When I what, Scott?” Stiles said impatiently, staring flatly at his friend.
“When you have a big crush on him,” Scott blurted out, obviously uncomfortable talking about it. “I mean, you didn’t really have to tell anyone, though I would have been totally cool with it—you liking guys, not you liking Derek, but not because Derek is a guy, but because Derek is Derek—but you know I would’ve been cool with it, when have I ever given the impression that I wouldn’t have been cool with it?”
“I…” Stiles stared, but apparently Scott was not done yet.
“I would’ve been totally supportive, I would’ve tried to talk you out of it, but I would’ve been supportive. Because you can do so much better than Derek! I mean, Danny, Danny and I will find you a nice boy, your own age and not a werewolf, somebody as smart as you and as funny and plays video games and doesn’t go around biting people—unless that’s what you’re into, you don’t have to tell me, no judging, this is a judgment free zone—and I’ll make sure he cares about you and doesn’t ignore you, or I’ll kick his ass.” Scott looked intently at Stiles. “I’ll kick anyone’s ass for you. Even Derek’s, especially Derek’s.”
“Scott, while I have no doubt that you can kick Derek’s ass, there’s no need,” Stiles smiled.
Scott wrinkled his eyebrows together, “Stiles, it’s okay; you don’t need to put on a brave face. I remember how much venting time you needed when Lydia and Jackson got together, so, lay it on me.”
Stiles shook his head, “I’m telling the truth, I am definitely not stupid enough to get involved with Derek. I really don’t care that he’s dating Ms. Blake, except for the fact that she’ll probably be in danger every other day and now that’s just one more person to look out for, Scott, and with all these deaths, I’m starting to think we can’t do anything about it. That everyone we care about is going to die.”
There was a silence at the boys’ lunch table after that, which neither of them broke till the bell rang.
--
Next period for Stiles was English, with Lydia and Isaac, though Isaac wasn’t at school that day, not that Stiles’ blamed him. Stiles had stayed home a whole week when his mother had died, Isaac could afford a break for Boyd’s death as well.
Ms. Blake, dedicated faculty member she was, had been back to school teaching after her kidnapping, though she did look at Stiles differently now. Stiles had successfully avoided talking to her one on one so far, in spite of the meaningful looks and longer-than-polite stares.
--
“Hey, Stiles!”
Stiles spun around, “Allison?”
She raised her eyebrows at the questioning tone, which Stiles thought was a little unfair as she had never actually sought him out on her own, even when she and Scott were dating. So Stiles figured he had the right to be a little confused.
“So, what’s up?”
Allison took a breath, “Werewolves are not worth it.”
Stiles shook his head, “You lost me.”
“Take it from me, Stiles, it’s not worth it to date a werewolf, even when you know about them or think you understand them. There’s just a lot of pain and heartbreak and no matter how you feel when you’re with them, everything is not going to turn out okay.” Allison glanced over Stiles’ shoulder, “I should go, that’s all I wanted to say.”
Allison turned around, leaving Stiles speechless and Scott coming up behind him with a pained expression on his face.
“What, what were you talking about?” Scott asked, though Stiles figured he had heard everything.
Stiles shrugged his shoulder before turning around to face his friend, “Don’t know, just another crazy member of the Poor Stiles Pity Party For No Good Reason Organization.”
--
“As someone who’s had sex with a werewolf and wasn’t traumatized by my father trying to kill him, I can say that you’re really missing out.”
“This is not how I thought it would go when you and I discussed sex.”
“I’m going to chalk up that statement to you being of a fragile disposition right now,” Lydia said in a lilting tone of voice. “However, I can tell you that you that you dodged a huge bullet with Derek Hale. Not only are you not ready for a serious relationship, he is light years away from having one as well. Some serious counseling needs to go into that boy before he’s even ready for holding hands. Even taking his abs into consideration, I really don’t envy Ms. Blake right now.”
“This keep happening to me,” Stiles said incredulously. He’s done asking why, obviously no one is going to answer.
“Because everyone knows about your massive torch you’re carrying for Derek—so shut up, I'm trying to console you.”
“I don’t need consoling,” Stiles interrupted, “There is nothing to console me about. Derek’s dating Ms. Blake, no big deal! Whatever everyone thinks they see when I’m with Derek is absolutely wrong—I don’t like him!” Stiles finished in a huff, breathing heavily and causing Lydia to raise her eyebrow at him.
“See what I mean, you’re both not ready for a serious relationship. There has to be a certain amount of maturity before—”
“I don’t like him!”
Lydia nodded her head and pursed her lips, “Of course you don’t,” she said condescendingly. “I’ll just let you continue on in your denial since I’m not going to waste my time helping people who don’t want to help themselves. So you just,” Lydia faltered and looked around the hallway, “You just ‘Hang in There, Baby’.”
Lydia finished the most unhelpful pep talk ever by patting Stiles on the shoulder daintily. Stiles watched her go simply because he was stunned and not to do with any other reason he may have watched Lydia walk away in the past.
Also, they had finally found something Lydia was really bad at.
--
“I see I’m stuck on babysitting duty again.”
“Funny, that’s exactly what I was going to say.”
“You see, Stiles, we’re so alike, it’s why we get on so well.”
Stiles had to physically bite his lip to keep himself from saying ‘like a house on fire’. That’s just the kind of petty bickering Peter inspired in Stiles, though that comment might earn him some neck mauling. The two were holed up in Derek’s loft while the rest of their gang chased after the Alpha pack downtown. Apparently Kali had made a remark about how many relationships fall apart when one of them is a workaholic, spending her nights alone in the school, which had Derek very proactive about hunting them down. Stiles thought it was about time.
“Here I am, the distrustful werewolf who has been severely weakened and forced to team up with the clever human, who really can’t do anything except annoy people to death.”
“With that sparkling personality, it’s a wonder why no one likes you.”
“You’re right,” Peter said, sounding like he didn’t think Stiles was right at all, “That was unfair of me. You can be useful at times.”
“Thank you, that really means a lot,” Stiles rolled his eyes and pointedly slouched against the wall. If he wasn’t so wary of Peter, he would’ve turned his back completely.
“Speaking of Derek dating your English teacher, how are you dealing with that? In my experience, teenage heartbreak is dealt with by listening to soft emo music and liberally applying ‘guyliner’.”
Stiles did a double-take, “What the hell…”
“Perhaps you went the more traditional route of a tub of Cookie Dough ice cream and renting ‘Pride and Prejudice’.”
“Stop talking.”
“If it’s any consolation—”
“If you’re the one saying it, it’s probably not going to be,” Stile interrupted.
“You could do a lot better than Derek. All familial ties aside, my nephew is an idiot. You should be with someone who’s at least as clever as you, maybe someone a little bit devious.” Peter’s smile grew a bit wider, “Have you given any more thought to whether you want the bite or not, Stiles? The offer’s still on the table, we could be really good together.”
That was when Stiles decided it was time to leave. Death by pack of Alphas was better than whatever the hell Peter was doing.
--
"I saw Derek Hale and your English teacher out tonight."
Stiles didn't look up from his computer, but made a sound acknowledging his dad had spoken.
"They looked, close," His dad continued, taking a few more steps into the room. Stiles quickly closed the website about Celtic druids and brought up a paused game, wishing the ground would swallow him because, yeah, he could deal with everyone else asking it, but if his dad—
"So, are, how do you—would you like to talk about that, or your, uh, feelings on things, or something?"
Stiles puffed out his cheeks and exhaled sharply, "Nope. I'm all good here."
The sheriff nodded, "Yeah, yeah, okay. But, whenever, you want to, just tell me, or you could even talk to your guidance counselor—"
“Dad, seriously, nothing to talk about.”
Mr. Stilinski turned to leave, but hesitated and walked over to Stiles, who was staring resolutely at the screen.
"I’m not saying I would’ve approved, but, anyone who doesn't want you is an idiot, just for your general knowledge," He kissed the top of Stiles' head, "Good night, I'll make pancakes in the morning."
Stiles forced a grin so wide his tears were pressed out of his eyes and down his cheeks, where they were harshly wiped away.
"Sounds great, dad."
"And bacon. Real bacon." He said pointedly as he walked out the door.
“Dad,” Stiles said, spinning around, “Thanks.”
The sheriff paused in the doorway and turned around, "I love you, Stiles."
“Love you too, dad.”
"I can arrest him again if you want me to."
"Dad," Stiles groaned, “Totally not necessary. I had a crush, he didn't sully my honor.”
“He better not have.”

Not Today
Summary: After angrily storming out of Defense Against the Dark Arts class and the library during a study session, experiencing an outburst of rage during Quidditch practice, snapping coldly at Madam Rakepick, and then being found having a breakdown, the gang is very concerned about their normally strong, composed friend and her hostile, emotional change in demeanor.
Word Count: ~20k
Genre/Warnings: Angst, a little Fluff at the end, Swearing?
Note: I’m not actually sure what genre this is but I guess angst works? A little fluff moment with Charlie at the end, lots of caring and concerned friends, some protective Rowan, and an anxious, stressed out Bill. This ended up being much, much, MUCH longer than originally planned (honestly, the ending became a lot longer than originally planned). I had a lot of feelings! (*insert ‘I just have a lot of feelings* gif from Mean Girls*) So this is more like an emotional venting story, not my best work, but it needed to be done. I also got weirdly into untranslatable words so… enjoy those =p Again, still in Fourth Year in the game even though this story is based on Fifth Year so I apologize for any inconsistencies or errors. – I started writing this before the Halloween event in the game and was already working on the ending when the event started; did add a couple references.
Soundtrack Suggestions: Honestly, I can’t think of any particular songs, I wrote this in a sort of emotional fit of rage, music not necessary, so listen to anything that makes you feel like screaming out in anger and breaking things and then crumble to the ground as a sobbing mess.
Preview: “There are much more difficult things to face and overcome than some cursed artifact or dark wizard. Some things you can never overcome and have to figure out how to cope with every day for the rest of your life. So you can’t stand up there and preach to all of us like you’ve seen it all and overcame it all, like it’s so easy to do, and you just know it all because you don’t! You have no idea how hard it is! And for you to make others who have to endure their challenge every day, who can’t just cast a spell and be rid of it, whose challenge is more about how horribly others treat them because of who they are instead of their actual struggle, feel worse about themselves is wrong. It’s harmful towards individuals and society. You are adding to the narrative and stereotypes, enabling the ignorant hatred and violence, permitting others to turn against people, some good people, who need understanding, compassion, and help. So you and everyone else can shut the fuck up about things you don’t understand because you have no idea, no idea, what real struggle and bravery and strength is.”
The students filed into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom looking somewhat sluggish and tired, probably because it was a Monday. They slumped into their desks and took out their required textbook and parchment filled notebooks to take notes on. Keira appeared to be in a particularly down mood today, not that it wasn’t uncommon for her to suddenly fall into a depressing mood when the gravity of her overwhelming situation would abruptly hit her, but this was different. And if anyone had been keeping track of this occurrence they might have discovered a pattern.
“Good afternoon class.” At Madam – er – Professor Rakepick’s voice signaling the start of class, any chatting between the students came to a sudden halt and everyone seemed to sit up straighter at their desks.
“Today I thought it fitting for us to cover one of the most dangerous beasts in the Wizarding world – Werewolves.” Professor Rakepick’s announcement of today’s lesson intrigued a majority of the class, including one Miss Penny Haywood. The popular Hufflepuff’s attention was instantly hooked and, while at first she seemed to pale and appear anxious, she quickly flipped open her book, eager to begin the lesson viewing this as an important learning opportunity. As long as there would be no actual werewolves. Keira, on the other hand, instantly tensed up at the mention of today’s lesson and apprehensively opened up her textbook.
The lesson began generally enough, Professor Rakepick going over common knowledge just in case anyone, probably assuming those muggle born, was unaware of basic facts on werewolves such as the distinctions between a werewolf and regular wolf, a werewolf’s inability to choose whether or not to transform, their inability to remember anything of their former human self when transformed, the falsehood in the muggle world of werewolves being negatively affected by silver, and on the lycanthropy infection that causes it.
Penny diligently took notes on everything Professor Rakepick said even if she was already well aware of the information. Keira couldn’t blame her. She understood Penny endured a traumatic experience with a werewolf and was determined to not allow herself or anyone else she cared about to fall victim to another one. The Slytherin, on the other hand, had yet to take a single mark on her parchment, not even a doodle.
“No, werewolves cannot pass on their lycanthropy to their children,” Professor Rakepick answered a student’s question, appearing a bit annoyed that her lecture was being interrupted, before motioning, albeit rather exasperatedly, to another student whose hand was raised.
“Is there no cure for it?” Professor Rakepick gave a condescending smirk before answering their question.
“No, there is no cure for lycanthropy. However, there is a potion, Wolfsbane Potion, which has proven to allow a werewolf to retain their human mind while transformed which has helped reduce werewolf attacks. It is a very difficult, complicated, and quite expensive to make and very dangerous, even deadly, if made incorrectly,” she added before continuing on with her lecture assuming there would be no more questions interrupting her.
Oh yes, Wolfsbane Potion. Keira remembered asking Professor Snape about it one time in Potions class which of course earned her a glaring look from her Head of House and a comment dripping in disdain. No, they would not be learning that lesson in that class or any other class of his. And she would be a fool to try and attempt it on her own because she would fail miserably and concoct a dangerous poison instead. Why was she interested in that particular potion anyway?
Keira couldn’t remember exactly what excuse she gave him, possibly relating to Penny since Penny was a potion master and always working to advance her technique or create her own potions, and Snape had a soft spot for her so Keira figured dropping Penny’s name couldn’t hurt. Regardless, he dropped it and moved on to the lesson for the day and Keira was incredibly disappointed to discover they would not be learning Wolfsbane Potion then or ever.
She had thought about trying to make it herself but Snape didn’t lie about it being an advanced potion. The ingredients were expensive, sure, but that didn’t faze her at all. And yes, there was a risk buying those particular ingredients since it could alert others to a werewolf’s identity but being a Slytherin and member of the infamous House of Black had its advantages including connections to shady wizards who sold a variety of items secretly including rare potion ingredients. Plus she could always “borrow” some ingredients from Snape – it wouldn’t be the first time nor the last for that. But even if she got the ingredients the risk of messing it up was high.
She had considered asking Penny for her help, who better to help make a potion than her best friend the potions master? But Penny wasn’t stupid, and Keira did not, could not, answer her questions about why she needed this potion. And Penny clearly had her own, personal feelings towards werewolves which could easily cause her to refuse her help. Plus she already asked so much of her friends with finding the Cursed Vaults and this was another personal thing she didn’t want to get them involved in. She had even considered finding someone to pay to make the potion for her, most likely the same type of shady character who would sell the ingredients covertly, but she couldn’t trust someone else to make this type of potion.
No, she would figure this out on her own.
“Werewolves are often shunned and discriminated against in Wizarding society and most believe they are evil creatures who deserve nothing short of death. I’ll let you form your own opinions on them. But I can tell you first hand, facing off against these beasts is a true test of one’s abilities. They are dangerous, murderous, and have killed many wizards, witches, and even muggles,” Professor Rakepick warned causing some student’s to look up fearfully at her.
Keira, on the other hand, simply narrowed her eyes at the Professor. She was quickly growing over this lesson and hoped class was almost over.
Unfortunately, class was nowhere near being over and once Professor Rakepick finished her lesson and warning on how dangerous werewolves were she brought out a practice dummy to demonstrate some defensive and attack spells they could use on a werewolf if they were ever ill-fated to encounter one. Alright, Keira could admit there were absolutely dangerous werewolves out there – she could think of one in particular – and true, they should learn how to defend themselves against one if necessary. However, some of these violent attacks and the overall aggressive attitude of this lesson was starting to wear on her. And honestly, today of all days, she had little patience and tolerance and understanding.
Once she finished her demonstration, Professor Rakepick called the students to come up and form a line to practice the spells she just showed them on the practice dummy. Penny put on a determined face and practically raced up to the front of the classroom. Fortunately it was a basic practice dummy and not one that appeared like an actual werewolf or maybe her attitude would have been different.
And on any other day Keira would admire Penny’s eagerness and bravery to face what happened to her head on and with full dedication, no fear or hesitancy. Keira normally was so proud of Penny’s remarkable ability at coping with her trauma.
But not today.
Today she did not find Penny’s eagerness to learn all she could about werewolves and how to defeat them admirable. She found nothing amusing about the jokes other students made on the topic of today’s lesson. She did not find any of Rakepick’s self-proclaimed daring adventures fighting off werewolves brave or remarkable. And she had nothing but contempt and revulsion at any comments about killing werewolves even if they were directed at a practice dummy.
Yes, there were evil werewolves out there who caused a great deal of harm to others and she planned on ridding the world of a particular one herself one day.
But today…
Today’s lesson and her fellow student’s reaction to it filled her with anger, made her want to cry, and caused her to feel sick to her stomach.
Maybe if this lesson fell on another day, any other day, she wouldn’t feel so strongly. But the lesson had to fall on today and she was not prepared to handle it.
So while the rest of the students made their way up to the front of the class to attack the practice dummy they were supposed to imagine was a werewolf, Keira slammed her textbook shut, shoved her school supplies in her bag, and stood up quickly bumping into her desk and causing it to jolt forward a few inches and slam back down onto the floor. This sudden noise caused the other students and her Professor to look in her direction but Keira showed no signs of acknowledging their attention nor caring about it as she slung her bag over her shoulder and stormed out of the classroom.
She was done.
If she had bothered to look at the front of the classroom she would have noticed the concerned and quizzical looks on her friends’ faces, particularly the dragon obsessed Gryffindor who watched her closely with furrowed brows and searching eyes full of worry.
Keira marched down the labyrinth of hallways and staircases that made up Hogwarts, muttering to herself under her breath at the complete and utter connerie of that lesson, the audacity of Professor Rakepick and those students making their ignorant comments and vicious attacks on the attack dummy. Who did they think they were? They didn’t know anything!
“Miss Black.” Keira stopped dead in her tracks and whirled around when she heard her name called by stern yet gentle voice – she knew really of only one person who could master that type of tone.
“Y-yes, Professor McGonagall,” Keira stammered nervously as it just dawned on her that she was technically skipping class and now had been caught doing so. She was thankful, however, that it was by Professor McGonagall and not Professor Snape.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in class? Defense Against the Dark Arts I believe,” Professor McGonagall questioned the young girl who resisted squirming under the powerful witch’s intense gaze.
“W-well, yes, technically I am –“ Keira started, averting her eyes and focusing them on the floor beneath them.
“So then why are you wandering the hallways instead of attending your class,” Professor McGonagall continued her questioning, clasping her hands in front of her.
Keira shifted uncomfortably as she felt the Transfiguration Professor maintain her intense gaze on her, trying to think of how to answer her. “I just… I didn’t exactly agree with today’s lesson,” she eventually replied after what felt like an eternity to her under the close watch of the Gryffindor Head of House. It wasn’t a lie! She couldn’t lie to Professor McGonagall!
“You didn’t agree with the lesson,” Professor McGonagall repeated, astonished by the Slytherin’s reply. She had to admit she was not expecting that answer.
“No, I did not agree with it,” Keira declared adamantly, looking up at the Transfiguration Professor with a sudden conviction and a fiery look in her eyes.
Professor McGonagall studied the tenacious Slytherin. No other students had appeared to have stormed out of the classroom so it could not have been that controversial of a lesson. And she was well aware some lessons, particularly those in regards to the Dark Arts could upset some of their more sensitive students but Keira wasn’t normally one to allow her emotions to get the better of her like this.
“May I ask what this unbearable lesson was, exactly,” Professor McGonagall finally asked, partially she admitted out of her own curiosity. What lesson could have sent this student in particular who dealt with so much, carried so much with them, on a daily basis to finally reach her breaking point? And what if this was a lesson that needed to be examined upon closer inspection and have necessary changes made to it?
Keira’s sudden relentless and bold attitude wavered at the Professor’s next question. “… It was on werewolves, ma’am,” she answered quietly, her gaze once against shifting down to the floor.
Oh here it came. All the questions about why this lesson of all the lessons upset her? Upset her so much it caused her to walk out of class. And then a lecture on the importance of the lessons they learned there at Hogwarts and while some may be difficult or even scary to some they had to learn them. And then she would be forced back into that class. The embarrassment of being ushered back in after her somewhat dramatic exit would just be the icing on the cake to this horrible day today was turning out to be.
But the series of questioning and matter-of-fact lecture that disregarded one’s feelings never came.
Instead Professor McGonagall’s eyes softened for a moment, full of understanding and perhaps even some nostalgia, at Keira’s honest reply. “Well, we can’t have you aimlessly wandering the hallways during class time. Come along,” she said as she glided past the Slytherin to continue down the hall towards her classroom. “It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of your private Transfiguration lessons.”
Keira watched the poised Professor curiously. “What?”
“You should be learning something,” Professor McGonagall stated before motioning towards the open door to her classroom. Once the shock wore off over McGonagall’s kind and generous reaction to her confession of ditching class, Keira grinned and hurried into the Transfiguration classroom. Maybe this day wasn’t so bad after all.
“Very good, Miss Black,” Professor McGonagall praised as the young Slytherin bonded a couple books together.
“Thank you, Professor,” Keira replied before undoing her transfiguration spell. “I appreciate you taking the time to teach me like this.”
“I am a Professor, Miss Black. It is my job to teach. And when I see promising young students like yourself, providing individual private lessons is a pleasure,” Professor McGonagall replied with a kind smile. Keira smiled back at her before attempting to cast Epoximise again. Her attitude had drastically changed from earlier. She had forgotten about being angry and resentful and was enjoying learning a new lesson with a Professor who understood how she felt better than most, if anyone else, at Hogwarts.
“You know, Sirius and his friends were quite skilled at Transfigurations as well,” Professor McGonagall casually mentioned, although there really was nothing casual about it.
Keira paused in her practicing and looked up at her Professor curiously. “Yeah?”
At her gentle prodding Professor McGonagall continued, explaining what she meant further. Alright, sure, she admitted Sirius and his friends tended to get into some trouble but their skills in Transfigurations and other areas of magic were noteworthy. “The only thing more remarkable than their ability to use their impressive magical talents to consistently get into trouble was their unwavering loyal friendship. Which was especially beneficial for Mr. Lupin who always appeared to be a bit of a loner until them. He really seemed to open up, come into his own with them – happier.” A sad smile formed on the distinguished Professor’s face which Keira mirrored.
“You know, it’s good to hear someone speak about them in a positive way,” Keira said after a moment before letting out a hollow chuckle. “Professor Snape only condemns me for my relationship to them.”
“Yes, well Sev- Professor Snape never got along well with them,” Professor McGonagall recalled with a nod of her head.
“Yeah, that’s been made pretty clear,” Keira muttered.
While she thought this topic may prove to be somewhat therapeutic for the Slytherin, Professor McGonagall had to admit she enjoyed reminiscing for a bit with Keira despite the bittersweet subject. And Keira greatly appreciated Professor McGonagall talking to her about it.
“Here’s a list of some books I recommend you read to advance your talents in Transfigurations, if you’re interested. I may even be willing to provide some extra credit if you write a particularly compelling essay on what you learn from them. And if you promise to go straight to the library, no detours, and get straight to work I will let you go,” Professor McGonagall negotiated as she handed her student a piece of parchment with her book suggestions.
“I promise. Straight to the library to quietly read these,” Keira assured her, holding up the list. “I won’t cause anyone any trouble,” she added.
Professor McGonagall smiled warmly down at the Slytherin and nodded her head to silently permit her to leave despite it still being class time for her. Keira thanked her again, and again and again – for everything. For giving her a private lesson and recommending books for her to advance her skills, investing in her and encouraging her, and most importantly talking to her about Sirius and Remus and their time as students which helped her feel closer to her family, one she barely knew. She appreciated McGonagall being there for her.
Keira hurried to the library without any detours, as promised, in a much better mood form earlier. She honestly had forgotten about that class and how it made her feel. Forgot that she was even ditching it!
She wandered up and down the many aisles of books, locating the ones Professor McGonagall suggested for her. She balanced the list on top of the small stack of books she carried in her arms as she now hunted for a spot to sit. The library had been filled recently by Seventh Years preparing for their N.E.W.T.s. Funny, she couldn’t remember other Seventh Year students taking up most of the library any other year.
And speaking of Seventh Years…
Keira’s grey eyes landed on a familiar redhead sitting at the end of one of the tables who looked uncharacteristically anxious with his head in his hands as his eyes frantically scanned one of the many open books laid out in front of him. Oh the poor boy… Keira laughed slightly to herself and shook her head before making her way over to the stressed out eldest Weasley.
“Mind if I join you,” Keira asked quietly as she pulled out a chair for herself. Bill’s head whipped up from his intensive studying to look up at her.
“What? Yeah, sure,” Bill replied frenetically, motioning to the chair she had already pulled out for herself.
Keira frowned slightly as she set her armful of books down on the table and slid her bag off her shoulder. “Are you okay?”
“What,” Bill asked again, whipping his head back up once again from the books that continually absorbed all his attention. “Y-yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Just studying for my N.E.W.T.s you know, and it’s exhausting! I mean, if it’s this exhausting just studying for them imagine how exhausting it will be taking them!” Bill laughed a bit hysterically as he leaned back in his chair, running his fingers through his hair look positively mad.
Keira stared at him as she set her bag on the ground next to her and took a seat next to the exhausted and somewhat crazed Gryffindor. “…When’s the last time you got some sleep?”
“Sleep? Sleep,” he repeated, growing louder and earning a harsh SHUSH from Madam Pince and some other students in the library studying for their own N.E.W.T.s. “I can’t afford sleep right now,” Bill informed her matter-of-factly in a stern whisper.
“Okay…” Keira replied, grabbing one of the books Professor McGonagall suggested for her. ”Someone needs to drink some Draught of Peace,” she muttered under her breath.
“What,” Bill demanded, giving her a harsh look. What did she just say?!
Uh oh… Quickly, think of a way out of this! “…You can borrow some of my books on Transfigurations if you want. Professor McGonagall recommended them personally,” she offered gently. Crazed, sleep-deprived, anxious Bill scared her.
“Yeah,” Bill asked, eyeing the small stack of books on the table seeming to calm down for the moment. “Thanks.” Keira nodded her head as she watched him closely.
“Will, I’m worried about you,” she confessed.
Bill took a deep breath before replying. “I’m fine, really. I just… I need to do well on these exams so I can become a Curse-Breaker,” he explained, sounding more like his composed self.
“Yeah, not everyone can be skilled enough to break their first curse at age eleven and secure themselves a job before taking their exams. I probably don’t even need to take the N.E.W.T.s. Could just leave school, walk right into Gringotts and inform them that I’m their new Curse-Breaker and they’d be like ‘alright’.” Keira’s teasing reply earned a small smirk from the eldest Weasley.
“No, unfortunately we cannot all be blessed like you,” Bill replied sarcastically, Keira smirking at him now. There was the William she knew and loved.
“Wait, aren’t you supposed to be in class right now,” Bill suddenly asked causing Keira to tense up slightly. Oh crap, busted again!
“Oh well I… I wasn’t feeling well so I left. Then I ran into Professor McGonagall and she helped me feel better. And then she gave me this list of books she thought I should read to help me advance my Transfigurations skills. And now I share them with you,” Keira replied, passing him one of her books.
“Thanks,” Bill said as he watched her closely. He suspected something more was up but these N.E.W.T.s were constantly stealing his focus. He figured if she or Charlie or anyone else really needed him they would be more direct about it.
The two fell silent as Bill resumed his exhaustive studying and Keira flipped open one of the books suggested to her and began reading. During their quiet studying session Bill let out a frustrated groan and slumped in his seat. Upon further investigation by Keira it was determined the source of Bill’s frustration was Ancient Runes. She slid the book that had currently captured Bill’s attention over so she could take a better look at it before offering her help.
“What about your own stuff,” Bill asked in a defeated tone, motioning to her books on Transfigurations.
“I can read those whenever,” Keira assured, waving off at her books on the table. “Besides, you always help me with Arithmancy,” she pointed out. Oh no, what would she do when he graduated and was no longer there to help her with her Arithmancy?! Her eyes widened as that realization dawned on her.
“Don’t worry, you can always owl me when you need help with your Arithmancy,” Bill assured her, understanding exactly what that look on her face meant.
“I can owl you my homework and you’ll do it for me,” Keira asked with an impish grin.
“That’s not what I sai-“
“Thank you, Will,” Keira cried out joyously as she leaned over to wrap her arms around the Gryffindor prefect and hug him tightly, earning a couple shushes from other students around them but she paid them no mind.
“Okay, alright. Let’s just focus on Ancient Runes for right now,” Bill suggested, patting one of her arms that was snuggly around him a couple times. Keira slowly released the eldest Weasley and began to help him with his studies on Ancient Runes.
So maybe the day had a rough start but it was a thousand times better now. Maybe today wouldn’t be so bad after all…
Soon enough some familiar faces joined them for their study session in the library once their class let out. Penny plopped down in the chair next to Keira, Rowan begrudgingly taking the next seat over while Charlie and Barnaby made themselves comfortable on the other side of the table, the second eldest Weasley sitting next to his brother and across from formerly fuming Slytherin.
“There you are Keira. Is everything okay,” Penny asked, her voice full of concern, just like Charlie’s eyes watching her closely from across the table.
“Yeah, why,” Keira asked as she kept her eyes locked on the book in front of her, suddenly feeling more tense at their arrival. Their presence just reminded her of what she was trying to get away from.
“Because you stormed out of class in a fiery rage,” Barnaby exaggerated causing Rowan to shake her head.
“No, that wasn’t a fiery rage for her,” Rowan informed them. She had seen Keira in a rage and that was not it but she was definitely upset.
“You stormed out of class in a fit of rage,” Bill questioned, his attention suddenly grabbed from his studies. Keira could feel the lecture looming.
“N.E.W.T.s.” That was all Keira had to say for Bill’s focus to instantly go back to his studies.
“It may not have been a fit of rage but you were clearly upset.” Penny steered the conversation back to the topic they came there to discuss and Keira had to resist rolling her eyes. She could feel all of their eyes locked on her and it was close to driving her mad.
“So, why did you leave in the middle of class,” Barnaby asked gently, his voice full of concern. Keira couldn’t give a snide remark when his was genuinely worried.
“I just…wasn’t feeling well,” Keira finally answered with a shrug.
“Did you go see Madam Pomfrey,” Rowan asked. “Because if you haven’t maybe we should go to make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m fine, Rowan, really,” Keira assured, raising up a hand to signal to her roommate to calm down and stop grabbing her things in preparation to leave. “I’m feeling a lot better,” she added, throwing a reassuring look to her friends, particularly Barnaby who she felt was mere moments away from either hugging her and never letting her go or knocking out anyone that came near her. Or both.
“Okay,” Penny replied after studying her a moment, although she didn’t sound entirely convinced, if Keira didn’t want to talk about it she wasn’t going to force her. “Well you missed quite the exciting class.”
Keira clenched her jaw at Penny’s mention of the day’s Defense Against the Dark Arts class. She couldn’t help but find it a little flippant that they were so concerned about why she left the class so upset and then went right into talking about it and all that she missed.
Her whole body grew tenser as Penny, Rowan, and Barnaby continued to discuss what she missed in class amongst themselves, excited over the new spells they learned. Penny in particular was eager to talk about today’s lesson. It was taking all of Keira’s willpower to keep from exploding at the keen Hufflepuff, from shouting at her to shut up. And to keep from snapping at Charlie to stop staring at her! She knew he was worried about her, and she appreciated it, but he had to stop just staring at her like he was waiting for her to have a breakdown or else she would have one! At least he wasn’t participating in this discussion over their Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson for the day. He even tried to steer the conversation to dragons, which was a normal occurrence, and maybe it was a bit narcissistic to think he was doing it for her, but Keira appreciated his efforts to change the topic of discussion since this one clearly upset her. And if anyone recognized what was going on with her, it would be the observant Seeker who always seemed to notice things about her and discern how she was feeling – which honestly sort of weirded her out. She wasn’t use to someone paying so much attention to her like that… Well, besides Rowan.
Alright, maybe it was not so obvious since she hadn’t said anything explicitly but she did leave class upset, which they were just concerned about a few moments ago, and her knuckles were white from gripping her book so tightly, her jaw clenched so tight she worried her teeth may shatter. Not to mention the anger and irritation wafting off of her and making their atmosphere heavy and tense.
“Would be cool to see a werewolf,” Barnaby considered, earning a slight glare from Penny that went unnoticed, fortunately, by the magical creature lover as he continued to think about what seeing a werewolf first hand would be like.
“You sound like Tonks,” Rowan laughed. Her joke seemed to only irritate Penny further and she suddenly turned her attention to the other magical creature obsessed person at the table.
“I assume you would love to run into one in the Forbidden Forest sometime too, huh?” Charlie blinked and looked over at Penny with wide, somewhat fearful eyes, finally breaking his focus from Keira at least. The normally happy and supportive Hufflepuff had such a pointed and accusatory tone it threw him, and everyone else at the table, off. Her piercing glare was also uncharacteristic for her and Charlie wasn’t really sure how to handle this new side of Penny.
Charlie quickly glanced around at the others at the table, Barnaby and Rowan looking just as shocked and thrown off as him, before looking back at the popular Hufflepuff. “I just want to find a dragon,” he awkwardly replied. Everyone knew he was obsessed with dragons. He had never mentioned werewolves once! Why was he suddenly under interrogation?
“A dragon is probably less dangerous than a werewolf,” Penny muttered. Charlie was admittedly too afraid of her at the moment to debate that.
“Werewolves are evil, despicable, abhorrent, murderous creatures. I’m glad we’re learning how to fight against them and stop them from hurting anyone else. They’re like some sort of sinister, destructive, killing epidemic that needs to be extinguished.” Penny’s passionate speech left everyone at the table in silence.
It was unknown how many knew of Penny’s traumatizing experience with a werewolf. Keira suspected she was the only one which made her powerful declaration more shocking to the rest of those at the table; well, except for maybe Bill who was still absorbed into his studies. Barnaby and Rowan stared at the fired-up Hufflepuff with wide eyes while Charlie shifted uncomfortably in his seat and averted his gaze from the intense one of the blonde across the table.
On any other day, Keira would have been more understanding and compassionate towards Penny and her circumstances. She knew what Penny had gone through, what she had lost because of a vicious werewolf attack. As far as she knew she was the only one who knew what Penny went through. Which required her to more supportive for her Hufflepuff friend. And on any other day she would have let Penny’s impassioned speech roll off her back, understanding it was specifically about the situation Penny unfortunately experienced and all the emotions she constantly kept bottled up inside over losing someone close to her – and Keira knew a thing or two about keeping emotions bottled up – and not take it personally.
But not today.
Today Penny’s emotional opinions on werewolves that led her to speak out against them made Keira’s blood boil. It took every ounce of self-control Keira had to keep from flipping the table over, smacking Penny in the face with her book, and blowing up with her own passionate speech about how wrong Penny was and despite her own personal experience it wasn’t universal and her views were ignorant and harmful.
No, she couldn’t trust herself to stay there. The longer she sat there the angrier she got. And the angrier she got the less she was able to control her wrath.
Keira slammed her book shut and stood up abruptly, her chair scooting back, scrapping loudly against the hardwood floors. Her actions earned her a harsh glare from Madam Pince but no loud shushing, possibly from the intense rage and fury rolling off of her in waves tarnishing the entire atmosphere in the library. Her abrupt actions also caused all her friends to stare up at her with wide, somewhat frightened eyes.
“…Keira,” Penny started carefully, the concern from earlier back in her voice. The concern for her back in all her friends’ eyes. She could feel it. And she appreciated it, she did. But right now she could not handle it, handle everything she was feeling right now, and had to get away.
“I have Quidditch practice,” Keira curtly replied as she swung her bag over her shoulder and piled her books in her arms before storming now out of the library. Was this her new thing? Storming out of every room in Hogwarts?
She could feel her friends’ eyes on her as she quickly made her leave. She knew they were worried about her, and again she appreciated it, but for now she prayed they did not follow her and hoped they would eventually forget about all of this so she wouldn’t have to talk about it.
Her friends shared a look between them once Keira left the library, full of questions and worry although no one dared to speak yet while the tense, hostile atmosphere lingered.
That is, until Barnaby gasped suddenly. “Oh! That means I have Quidditch practice too!” In classic Barnaby style, his comment eased the tension and instantly lightened the mood. He grabbed his bag as he stood up to head off to practice as well before Charlie’s voice caused him to pause.
“Hey, uh… make sure she’s okay… Okay?” Barnaby studied the troubled Gryffindor a moment before smiling at his fellow magical creature enthusiast.
“Of course. Once she hits some Bludgers around she’ll feel much better,” Barnaby assured before waving at his friends as he took his leave as well. That normally proved to be therapeutic for her in the past anyways.
Keira walked out of the Quidditch Changing Room and out onto the Pitch after changing into her gear. She preferred using the actual Quidditch Pitch for practices rather than the Training Pitch since the Quidditch Pitch is where matches were actually held and she felt practicing there better prepared her team for a game. She understood the Training Pitch opted for better privacy from any spies since the Quidditch Pitch was surrounded by spectator stands but it also lacked goal hoops which Keira, and most Quidditch captains, found useless. And this being her first year as Quidditch Captain for the Slytherin team, she wanted to give them every advantage.
Fortunately she was on good terms with Charlie and Andre so she wasn’t too concerned about anyone from Gryffindor or Ravenclaw spying on their practices and Hufflepuffs were too honest to do so, right? Although, sometimes she did suspect Andre might take an interest in watching her team’s practice since they tended to get quite competitive with each other over Quidditch.
Most of her team were already gathered around on the field chatting away. They had been going over some new strategies lately that were still written on the board in their Changing Rooms so they were able to refresh their memory before heading out for practice without having a team meeting beforehand to go over it all again. Keira swapped hands holding her broom to adjust one of her arm guards.
Her Quidditch broom was the first big purchase Keira bought on her own that wasn’t necessary school supplies. She knew her adopted parents were not very keen on her getting a broom but she bought it on her own! However, she understood their concern since what happened with Jacob so she agreed to compromise and promised to only use her broom for Quidditch related things like practices and games and the rest of the time Madam Hooch would keep her broom locked up safely. Sometimes it really irked Keira she couldn’t have her broom that she paid for herself, such as last year when she needed to get into the Forbidden Forest, but she did her best to see things from their perspective and be understanding towards their feelings on the matter.
Barnaby soon came trotting out of the Changing Rooms, hopping awkwardly as he held his Beater bat under one arm while he tried to secure one of his shin guards. “I’m here! I’m here,” he called since it appeared like the entire team was out there ready to go and waiting on him.
“Barnabas,” Keira called out to him with a slight sigh. “Your broom.”
Barnaby paused, balancing on one leg as he looked up at his Captain when she called out to him, taking a moment to process what she meant. “Oh yeah!” He turned to quickly head back into the Changing Rooms, muttering some curses as the shin guard he had been working on fell half off, the top not being securely fastened. It made for quite the sight of him awkwardly running with it hanging off his leg that even Keira in her foul mood couldn’t fight off a smile. Soon he returned from the Changing Rooms, broom and bat in hand and shin guard securely on.
Now that everyone was ready with their brooms and equipment securely fastened, the Slytherin team got on their brooms and took to the skies for practice. While normally hitting Bludgers proved to be very therapeutic for her and allowed her to get out her frustrations and stress in a healthy manner, and also kept her from fighting or threatening to fight her peers – her and Barnaby were quite the pair – this time Keira could not shake off this bad mood she was in. But it kept her from flipping table in the library and smacking Penny in the face with a book which she would have definitely regretted so guess it was helping in its own way. She still was incredibly upset though.
“Okay, let’s take a break!” After calling out to her team, Keira landed on the ground with the rest of the Slytherin Quidditch team for a brief break to rehydrate.
“Listen, these are some great new formations and all but I think we should be working on making our plays more aggressive,” one of the Chasers suggested.
“Aggressive but nothing illegal, right,” Keira asked, eyeing their teammate who gave her a wicked smirk and shrugged.
“It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught.” Keira sighed and shook her head. Stereotypical Slytherin.
“I’m all for being aggressive but I will not condone reckless and dangerous tactics that are focused on injuring others on purpose,” Keira declared sternly.
“I never said the intent was injuring them. But if they get hurt, well, Quidditch is a tough sport. Got to plan for getting hurt.” Keira sighed again while a couple of her teammates chuckled. What was with people today? Or maybe it was just her and her disgruntled mood.
“Hey, heard you stormed out of Defense Against the Dark Arts today,” their Seeker mentioned casually.
“So,” Keira asked, instantly defensive.
“So… why did you do that,” their Seeker asked before their Keeper chimed in.
“Yeah, I mean if you’re going to ditch class you don’t go and then walk out, you just don’t go.” Keira sighed heavily. Word travelled so fast at this school.
“I heard you also stormed out of the library before practice,” another one of her Chasers added before Keira had the chance to answer her Seeker’s question.
“I heard you were mad at Penny Haywood,” their third Chaser chimed in. Well guess Keira should be happy for once the rumors swirling about her weren’t about her being mad like her brother.
“You’re fighting with Penny Haywood,” the second Chaser gasped. “How can you not get along with Penny? She literally gets along with everyone. Everyone. Even Liz who only talks to animals and that weird loner Ravenclaw. What’s his name? Trevor?”
“It’s Talbott,” Keira snapped slightly. “And I’m not fighting with Penny,” she clarified.
“That’s good because the whole school would turn against you. Everyone loves Penny,” her third Chaser informed her, as if she didn’t know. And Keira did love Penny! She considered her one of her best friends!
“Well I don’t know if you had the same lesson we did, but if so, you missed a cool Defense Against the Dark Arts class,” her Keeper informed her while her two Chasers continued to ramble on about Penny and her popularity.
“We learned about werewolves and how to fight them –“
“Who could possibly have a problem with Penny?”
“I don’t know. It wouldn’t be wise to start anything with her though since she has the whole school on her side –“
“I think Blatching could easily be done – Whoops, didn’t mean to collide into them –“
“So then why did you storm out of the library then?”
“And why are people saying it was because of Penny?”
“David blasted the practice dummy so hard it almost slammed against the wall. Feel bad for any werewolf that crosses him.”
“Are we allowed to elbow an opponent in the face? What if we did it “accidentally”?”
“Are you sure you’re not in a fight with Penny?”
Everyone on her team incessantly talking over one another was beginning to be a bit of a sensory overload and definitely overwhelmingly frustrating.
Instead of Quidditch being a healthy way for her to cope with everything going on in her life it was becoming an added stressor to it. She had hoped practice would help take her mind off of everything going on that day and instead she was getting bombarded by everyone about it!
While any other day Quidditch helped her release her pet up aggression clearly it was not working,
Not today.
Keira suddenly let out a loud, frustrated yell before taking her bat and hitting it aggressively, repeatedly against one of the goal hoops poles as hard as she could. This proved to be much more therapeutic than hitting the Bludgers around. Bonus – it caused everyone on her team to shut up and stare at her with wide, terrified eyes.
Barnaby in particular was affected by Keira’s little outburst of rage. He had seen her hit a Bludger with a lot of force and bark orders as Captain, and he had seen her defend her friends against any bullying but this – this was a side of Keria he had never really seen before. She had snapped!
She normally was able to hold everything together despite what she was going through and was always the ones her friends turned to and relied on for support and reassurance. Even when she got angry over someone teasing one of her friends she never reacted so violently and full of fury. Rowan had told the rest of their gang before about her roommate’s breakdowns, either a sobbing mess or a raging fire, but none of them had ever seen it before. Sure, they sometimes caught her getting a little emotional, a little teary-eyed, but Barnaby never expected her to suddenly snap and attack like that. Fortunately it was the goal hoop and not a person.
Regardless, this angry outburst caused her Beater Buddy to be much more concerned over her and her mental health. He had really thought practice and hitting Bludgers around would fix things like it normally did. But clearly something much more was going on and he had no idea what and, therefore, no idea how to make it better!
After beating on the goal hoop post for a couple minutes while her teammates stared in silent shock, Keira gave the post one more solid hit before throwing her Beater bat behind her with such force all her teammates had to duck to avoid getting smacked in the face with it, their Keeper reaching up to make the save – as they should – and caught it before it flew too far.
“Practice is over,” Keira informed them coldly before grabbing her broom and storming off the Quidditch Pitch and back into the Changing Rooms.
So guess this angry, storming out move was becoming her new thing after all.
Her team watched her go before sharing looks between them. Was she serious? No more practice for the day? Barnaby snatched Keira’s bat out of the Keeper’s hand to return to her, although he thought he should wait until she calmed down a bit first.
Keira did her best to avoid people the rest of the day. She thanked Barnaby for returning her bat to her in the Slytherin Common Room after the Quidditch practice incident. She then had to spend the next ten minutes assuring him she was fine and no she did not want to talk about what happened! But she appreciated his concern. She would feel better tomorrow. Probably. Hopefully.
Keira skipped dinner that evening in the Great Hall which left her friends to try and decipher what was going on with her with the added information Barnaby provided them about what happened during Quidditch Practice.
“She attacked the goal post,” Penny repeated in surprise, trying to imagine it.
“Then she almost took us all out when she threw the bat,” Barnaby added, looking down as he recounted their practice’s events. He was clearly struggling with some inner turmoil himself. “I tried asking her what was wrong and how I could help after practice but she just kept saying she was fine.” How was he supposed to help his friend who was obviously going through something when they didn’t tell him what was wrong?!
“I told you guys she has these rage meltdowns!” Rowan sounded as if she was scolding them all which she sort of was, and did on a regular basis. As Keira’s roommate she was the only one who saw how much Keira was suffering. While she was able to put on a brave face in front of everyone else on a day to day basis, Rowan knew how hard this all was on her. And while Rowan did her best to comfort her friend, and she may not freely admit this but she liked comforting her friend during these moments and being needed, she did try and inform the rest of their group of friends when Keira was having a harder time than others so they could aid in making her feel better and not ask so much of her during those times.
And while their friends agreed to do that, they did not truly understand how much Keira was struggling. Not like Rowan who witnessed it firsthand. Hence, when they always turned to Keira for help with… well, basically everything, needing her reassurance to help her find her brother after offering their help, Rowan couldn’t help but get frustrated with them.
Did they forget that Keira’s brother was missing and could be dead? Did they not fully grasp how hard it was to go looking for your brother, while everyone around you talked about how crazy he was, how he might be a Death Eater, or dead, while trying to save the school from curses, and on top of all that having her life being threatened?! Besides the stress of the Cursed-Vaults and her missing brother, Keira was a Prefect and Quidditch Captain which added more responsibilities to her plate, and had to go to class, do homework, and study for exams, just like the rest of them! Dumbledore, Hagrid, Madam Rosmerta, House Ghosts, other students, and some Professors all asked Keira to help them with something like she didn’t already have enough to deal with! Rowan would smack all these people if she could!
Sometimes she wished the rest of their friends would witness Keira having a breakdown so they would better understand what was going on inside their friend all the time. But, and again she would not freely admit this, Rowan kind of liked being the only one who witnessed Keira’s breakdowns and being the only one there for her best friend during those dark times – like they had a special bond the others didn’t.
“That one wasn’t even that bad. She’s had much worse,” Rowan informed them before taking a bite of her sandwich.
“Well, what do you think is wrong then,” Penny asked, a little snippy at Rowan’s know-it-all attitude. When it was about course work she didn’t mind it but when came to their friend she did not appreciate it being hinted that the rest of them didn’t know or care as much about Keira as she did.
“I don’t know but I can talk to her tonight during Astronomy and see if I can find anything out,” Rowan offered, ignoring Penny’s slightly harsh tone.
“Or, maybe we can go and try to talk to her after dinner,” Penny countered. They were all her friends and they all were concerned about her.
“Guess we could do that too. I just thought maybe going in as a group may put her on the defensive is all,” Rowan reasoned.
“Well then maybe just you and I go then,” Penny bartered, quick with her reply.
“…Okay,” Rowan conceded with a shrug.
“Barnaby, are you okay,” Penny asked the hunched over Slytherin who looked like he was on the verge of tears.
“I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do to make her feel better,” Barnaby cried out in anguish. The rest of dinner pretty much consisted of comforting Barnaby.
Keira hugged her knees to her chest as she sat on the cool ground. A light breeze sent a chill throughout her body but she had no desire to go inside. In fact she sort of welcomed and enjoyed the crisp autumn-almost-winter air. She took another deep breath as her grey eyes stared fixed on the reflection of the night sky on the surface of the Black Lake.
She knew her friends were looking for her, probably wandering all throughout Hogwarts. But she needed to be alone right now. And she hoped if they came out there looking for her they wouldn’t see her still figure sitting in the dark. Fortunately, Hogwarts and its grounds were pretty vast so if they did stumble upon her it shouldn’t be for some time. Or ever, if it was up to Keira.
Another small breeze blew a strand of her hair back, away from her face, sending another chill throughout her body. After a day of so much anger and rage coursing through her, Keira now felt drained. She felt exhausted and completely depressed. She just wanted to curl up by the fire in the Common Room, stare out into the lake, and be left alone, but she knew that wouldn’t be a possibility. Her friends had been on her all day about what was going on with her and she couldn’t escape Rowan and Barnaby in her House’s Common Room. And she felt so guilty keeping things from them and pushing them away when she saw how concerned they were and how much they wanted to help but she couldn’t talk to them about this.
So if she couldn’t stare out into the lake from her Common Room then she would come outside and enjoy it out there in the cold night air. And now, after her day of slamming books and desks, thrashing a goal hoop post, possibly throwing and breaking some things in the Slytherin Dorm while her friends were at dinner, and storming away from everyone in a fit of rage, Keira just wanted to cry.
She had tried so hard to conceal her anger, push it down so she didn’t explode, which obviously didn’t go according to plan since she had her little outbursts, but they could have been worse. She would still have some explaining to do to her friends, which she had no idea what she would say so that added another layer of stress. But she could worry about that tomorrow, that’s what she told herself anyway so she wouldn’t get overwhelmed. And now she was using what little energy she had left to hold back her tears. Although that was beginning to become quite the fail as well as a couple tears escaped her eyes and ran down her face.
Keira didn’t know how long she had been out there, but this was the most calm she had felt all day. Albeit, sad, but at least not full of unbridled rage unsure of what to do with it or how to safely let it out. She could let out her emotions presently, finally able to put down her defenses now that she was finally alone, and cry as much as she wanted without anyone around judging her or her friends panicking over her, trying to figure out what was wrong and how to help. Sometimes, a lot of times, she needed to be alone. And able to just let her emotions out without any questions or judgments or anyone trying to stop her and fix it – things were not so easy to fix!
But she wasn’t ready to let everything tormenting inside of her out just yet. She just wanted to sit there in silence, not thinking about anything and, if she could help it, not feeling anything.
She jumped and whipped her head around when she heard someone approaching from behind her. And of all the people she thought would find her out there – Rowan, Penny, Hagrid, Professor Snape – this was the last one she wanted finding her.
“Are you supposed to be out here at this hour, Miss Black?”
Keira narrowed her eyes at their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher before slowly standing up as her professor continued.
“Not that I’m one to talk. I broke curfew all the time when I was student here,” Professor Rakepick bragged before pausing a moment as she studied the girl. “So, is this where you ran off to when you left in the middle of my class?”
“If you want to punish me for that, go ahead,” Keira replied coldly as she continued to stare out at the lake.
Professor Rakepick looked taken aback by the Slytherin’s reply but quickly wiped that look off her face. “I don’t plan on punishing you, Miss Black,” she informed her student which came as a surprise to Keira, “But I would like an explanation for that display in my class.”
“I wasn’t feeling well,” Keira answered, using the same excuse as before when her friends asked her. Which wasn’t a total lie – she didn’t feel well! She felt sick to her stomach, in fact!
“Is that so? Yet you did not go see Madam Pomfrey.” Keira could feel Professor Rakepick’s eyes boring into her but she held her ground. “I checked with her after class. After that fit you threw.” Keira tensed up, her hands fisting at her sides. That anger she had been wrestling with all day and finally thought she was rid of was beginning to boil again.
“So if you were, in fact, not feeling well, then why did you not go see Madam Pomfrey,” Professor Rakepick continued to interrogate.
“I ran into Professor McGonagall. We had a private Transfiguration lesson,” Keira informed her.
“Oh I see. So you’d rather learn Transfigurations than how to defend yourself against dark wizards and witches and evil beasts -“ Professor Rakepick stopped as she noticed Keira scoff and shake her head, and she assumed roll her eyes but the Slytherin had yet to look at her. “Well then, if that’s not what the problem is then why don’t you share what is really bothering you,” she commanded, crossing her arms.
Despite this order Keira did not reply forcing Professor Rakepick to make an assumption. “If this is something about the Cursed Vaults –“ she stopped again as Keira let out a hollow laugh.
“You know what your problem is,” Keira suddenly spoke, turning to finally face the former Head Curse-Breaker. Professor Rakepick wasn’t sure if she should be offended or intrigued at what this girl had to say.
“You think you know everything. Have seen everything. Faced it all. You’ve travelled everywhere, facing dangerous creatures and dark wizards and tombs full of traps, breaking curses on numerous artifacts which could kill you – all of this has given you a superiority complex. You walk around here like you’re better than everyone because you think you have faced every challenge life has to throw at you and conquered it, so clearly you’re the most powerful, strongest, and bravest witch there ever was.
“But you don’t know everything. And you definitely have not faced and conquered every challenge life can throw at you – not even close. You have no idea what real bravery and strength is. Real bravery and strength is getting up every day and putting yourself out there to try and make your life better even when the entire world is against you. Being kind and compassionate to others even when all they do is judge and hate you without ever getting to know you. Enduring excruciating mental and physical pain time and time again, being completely alone after losing everyone close to you, but you keep going and never let it consume you.
“There are much more difficult things to face and overcome than some cursed artifact or dark wizard.
She couldn’t sit back anymore, keeping everything inside, pretending everything was okay.
Not today.
If anyone had seen him out there wandering around the castle grounds at night they would probably assume he was up to his usual dragon expedition. And if anyone had asked him what he was doing, he would probably claim that’s what he was up to. He wasn’t sure why, but he didn’t want to admit he was out there looking for her. Maybe because if he did then Penny or Rowan or one of their other friends would want to join him and if he found her he wanted to talk to her alone.
So while the rest of the gang scoured around the ever changing layout of the school, Charlie snuck outside. She may be inside, hiding out in her Dorm or an empty classroom, or maybe even at Hagrid’s or at the Quidditch Pitch. While those were all viable options, Charlie was one of the few who knew about her strong connection to water and how it helped calm her down and bring her peace, even if that meant her jumping fully clothed into the Black Lake and getting in trouble by her Head of House.
He paused when he noticed the figure sitting at the edge of the lake. He had almost completely missed her but upon getting closer realized that it was in fact her sitting there. A small smile formed on his face, perhaps a bit smug that he was the one to find her before anyone else. And he was glad that he found her before anyone else because now he could talk to her alone without Penny and Rowan’s constant questions while trying to outdo each other on support and concern in their suppressed ‘who was Keira’s best friend’ competition, and Barnaby and Tonks doing anything and everything to get her to laugh, their antics growing in ridiculousness and recklessness; and, alright he hated to admit it because he loved his older brother who was also his best friend, but without Bill swooping in with his older brother wisdom and comfort. Yes, Bill was the oldest but Charlie was an older brother too and cared just as much about his younger siblings and could provide older brother love and care too! And he cared just as much for Keira as Bill and the rest of their friends and would always be there for her just like he would be for any of his family.
As he started to make his way towards her, possibly going over what greeting to give when he approached her in his head, Charlie spotted another figure making their way down to Keira adjacent to him. Once he realized who it was as they addressed Keira he darted behind a nearby tree – he didn’t need to get detention or house points taken away, especially as a Prefect. Or get a scolding lecture by Bill. Plus, it would be rude to interrupt, right? Still, he didn’t want to leave Keira to get in trouble either. Maybe he could figure out some reason they were out there so late and save them both from punishment.
As Charlie tried to come up with an excuse as to why he and Keira would be out there in the middle of the night that would be accepted by the Curse-Breaker turned Professor the air suddenly changed. Everything suddenly got heavier, tense, colder, dark.
“You know what you’re problem is?” Charlie looked up as he heard Keira’s cutting tone towards their professor. He had never heard her speak like that before. And to a Professor nonetheless!
Charlie continued to stare in shock as Keira finally exploded after everything building up inside her through the day she tried so desperately to internalize spilled out. But this wasn’t like other times when Keira had unleashed her Irish temper on someone else, normally for bothering one of their friends or at Merula for her morbid jokes about Jacob being dead. This wasn’t like those times Rowan told them about where Keira needed to throw, hit, and break things to finally let out all her pent up anger and frustration. Those were fueled with fire, spoke with a blazing intensity, a raging fury that would cause adrenaline to course through veins and fill the air with this heated tension like a fight was about to break out. One of the reasons she was feared on the Quidditch Pitch.
But this – this was a different side of Keira, one he had never seen. It was dark and cold. Her words were still filled with passion but were made of ice and stung sharply. The heavy, biting cold change in the atmosphere differed wildly from its heated counterpart. It was more ominous, sinister, intimidating. It sent a chill down his spine. This darker side of Keira kind of terrified him. Her eyes were like piercing daggers as she stared down their Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, standing her ground firmly. Even as she shouted and swore – oh Merlin she just swore at a professor – her words were still icy and full of disdain. While her Irish temper flared up a call to action, this chilling vibe was more apathetic, like she didn’t care what happened, what the consequences were.
But he knew, under that icy, stone cold exterior and beneath the vicious ire and stinging of her words, this darker side of Keira was hiding a lot of pain. And despite fearing her a bit, being a little intimidated – which he knew she would be flattered by – mostly, Charlie felt heartbroken for her, a wave of compassion where he just wanted to be there for her, support her and allow her to feel safe to let out everything she was holding in and then reassure her and make her smile. Surprising to him, he also felt protective over her. He wanted to do whatever he could to keep her from hurting.
He knew she was suffering a lot over her missing brother, but she was so good at appearing like everything was fine, sometimes they forgot everything she was going through. And then when it showed… it killed him to see her upset. He couldn’t even imagine what it would be like if one of his siblings went missing and he had no idea where they were or if they were safe or even alive.
And seeing her upset like this, in a much different way than they had previously witnessed, and having no real knowledge of why she was so upset was agonizing. This was why Barnaby was practically in tears at dinner. If it wasn’t about her brother and the vaults, since she just snapped at Professor Rakepick about assuming it was about that – which was a fair assumption he thought! – then what was it about?
Her frosty and hostile outburst at Professor Rakepick unfortunately still did not give him a lot of clues as to what was really going on with her.
An eerie and tense silence fell once Keira finished. Charlie assumed Professor Rakepick had no idea how to respond to that since who could have predicted she would have gone off like that? And to her? Professor Trelawney would probably claim she could have but no one would believe her.
~*~*~*~*~
Much like Charlie assumed, Professor Rakepick stood there aghast at the student’s outburst. While she did her best to maintain a neutral face it was difficult to completely hide her shock.
“Um….E-excuse me?”
A meek voice interfered through the tense atmosphere causing both women to look towards where it came.
It was fortunate they were interrupted. Professor Rakepick had yet to fully process everything that was said, and how it was said, from this girl to her and therefore had yet to determine how to respond and handle the situation. Normally quick at problem solving and leaping into action, since while risking your life breaking curses one could not always afford the luxury of time to analyze a situation and think through all possible options before choosing one, this particular situation surprisingly had caught her off guard and threw her off enough that she did need a moment to step back and think about what action to take.
And for Keira, well, it delayed her from getting punished, she assumed, and took the attention off of her even if just for a moment. Even from the Gryffindor boy hiding nearby behind a tree, unknown to her and their professor, whose attention was also grabbed by the surprise appearance of another person.
Rowan stood there awkwardly, looking nervously between her best friend and Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. Both were unsure how long Rowan had been there, how much she had heard, but she looked pretty frightened and uncomfortable.
“S-sorry to interrupt,” Rowan started as both women turned their attention to her. She shifted uncomfortably under their intense gazes and avoided eye contact with either of them. “It’s um… we uh…” she stammered, fidgeting with her hands. “We have Astronomy class,” she finally managed to get out.
Professor Rakepick studied the intruder before looking back at Keira with a smirk. “Well, it looks like it’s your lucky day. You have a viable excuse to get out of this conversation.”
“I don’t need an excuse,” Keira replied in that same cold, sharp tone, turning her attention back to the red haired professor. “This wasn’t a conversation.”
Once again, Professor Rakepick wasn’t sure if she should be disrespected or impressed with how her student was speaking to her, challenging her.
“Really? Well Miss Black –“
“I have class.” Keira cut her off curtly as she waltzed right past the professor and over towards the still fearful looking Rowan. “Let’s go Rowan.”
Rowan glanced over as her roommate and best friend walked past her and continued to head back toward the school, flinching slightly at her dark tone, before looking back over at Professor Rakepick. She gave her a sheepish, apologetic smile before turning and hurrying to catch up with Keira, or at least get away from their Professor and tense atmosphere before Professor Rakepick turned her frustration on her.
Keira didn’t talk the entire way back to the school and up to the Astronomy Tower. She didn’t even complain about the stairs as she always did. Barnaby and Rowan shared concerned looks the entire walk to the Astronomy Tower and throughout class.
And while everyone looked through their telescopes and charted the stars on their charts, Keira just stood there looking up at the sky. Rowan and Barnaby glanced over worriedly at her as they worked on their class work.
“You can borrow my star chart if you need it,” Rowan offered quietly, a little nervous to experience that darker version of her friend again, especially directed at her.
Instead, however, a faint smile formed on Keira’s face as she continued to stare up at the sky. “Thanks, Rowan,” she answered softly. She clearly would need it since she wasn’t doing any work during class.
“You can borrow mine too if you want,” Barnaby offered. “I made my own constellation of a Kneazle,” he announced rather proudly.
“Very impressive, Barnaby,” Keira told him in the same soft tone as she continued to stare up at the sky. She would appreciate his constellation more later. Despite her lack of enthusiasm, Barnaby still grinned proudly at her praise.
Soon enough class was over with Keira not doing an ounce of work. “Come on, Keira. Let’s head back to the dorm,” Rowan said as she slid her mittens back on. The chilly weather alluded to winter right around the corner. “We can sit in front of the fire and get warm. I’ll make cocoa.”
“Ooo, cocoa,” Barnaby exclaimed excitedly.
“You guys go on ahead. I’ll be down later,” Keira told them, still standing in the same place and staring at the sky as she had been all through class.
“Are you sure? It’s getting pretty cold out here,” Rowan said, staring at her friend uneasily.
“I’m fine,” Keira assured. “Canadian, remember,” she added with a small smirk causing Rowan to visibly relax. There was her friend who she knew and loved.
“We can stay out here with you then,” Rowan said, glancing at Barnaby before she set her bag back down.
“No, thank you. I’d rather be alone,” Keira told them.
Rowan frowned slightly and shared another concerned look with Barnaby before hesitantly picking her bag back up. “Okay, well, if you’re sure. Don’t stay out here too long though,” Rowan gently warned her. That glimmer of her friend being her normal self gave Rowan a sliver of hope that she was okay, or at least would be soon, and made her feel comfortable enough to leave Keira alone. Rowan motioned to Barnaby to follow her as she headed for the Astronomy Tower stairs.
A feeling of extra weight on her shoulders was the only thing that broke Keira from her trance on the sky. She looked over, surprised to see a smiling Barnaby who was laying his robes over her shoulders. “Two sets of robes should keep you warmer than one.”
Keira stared at him a moment before smiling back at him gratefully. “Thank you, Barnaby.” She was amazed she didn’t start crying right then and there. This whole time she had been fighting back tears and his sweet, thoughtful gesture almost caused her to break.
Barnaby smiled more and nodded at her before picking up his bag and hurrying after Rowan. “Don’t be too long or there won’t be any cocoa left!” It may have been something small but he was happy to see Keira smile and be able to make her feel better, even if just a little bit.
Keira watched her friends leave, a small appreciative smile on her face. However, as soon as the door shut behind them tears began to steam down her face. Finally alone and exhausted from her day of trying to hold everything in and keeping it together, and failing in emotional filled outbursts, Keira allowed herself to relinquish her emotions, crumbling to the cold, hard floor.
“It was really scary,” Rowan admitted as she finished telling Barnaby about the outburst she witnessed Keira have at Professor Rakepick.
“Wow… She’s not going to get expelled, is she,” Barnaby asked anxiously.
“I hope not. But I don’t think Professor Rakepick would do that,” Rowan assured after a brief moment of thought. “It was just…so weird seeing her like that. It wasn’t like her other breakdowns it was –“
“Darker?” Rowan and Barnaby paused outside their Common Room entrance as a familiar figure stepped out from their hiding spot – had to avoid Professor Snape!
“Yeah…What are you doing down here, Charlie” Rowan asked as she studied the Gryffindor suspiciously.
“Where’s Ady,” Charlie asked, getting straight to the point. His direct and serious attitude was very different than his usual calm and cheerful self.
“You’re a Seeker. Why don’t you find her yourself,” Rowan replied, folding her arms being the ever protective friend that she was.
“I just wanted to talk to her, make sure she was okay,” Charlie sighed. “I saw the outburst down at the lake at Professor Rakepick,” he admitted in a whisper causing Rowan’s eyes to widen.
“You did? How? Where? I didn’t see you –“
“I was behind a tree –“
“So you were spying?”
“No, I – look, that doesn’t matter. I just want to make sure she’s okay. So where is she?” Rowan continued to study the Gryffindor silently. She couldn’t help being protective over Keira. She was her first and, in a way, only friend. Sure, they had made this group but she was well aware the lynchpin that got them and held them all together was Keira. None of them would even acknowledge her existence if it wasn’t for Keira. Well, maybe Penny who befriended everyone, even the loners.
She knew she could be overprotective of Keira and become fearful of her connecting with and getting closer to others because she was afraid of losing her. So being the only close friend that was also her roommate allowed her to have a special connection with Keira by being there for her during her late night breakdowns and nightmares. And she didn’t want to lose her role as the comforting, supportive friend during those dark times. Because if someone else started doing that for her, then what would Keira need her for? That’s what Rowan feared anyway.
And while their gang liked to talk about the possible blossoming relationship between Charlie and Keira that they both seemed completely oblivious too, Rowan would be damned if she would allow a love-struck Weasley to take her place in Keira’s life!
“She’s still up on top of the Astronomy Tower,” Barnaby answered when Rowan seemed to refuse to.
“Barnaby,” Rowan scolded.
“Did she get hold up after class by Professor Sinistra,” Charlie asked, turning his attention to Barnaby who was proving to be much more helpful than Rowan!
“No. She said she wanted to be alone. Even turned down cocoa,” Barnaby informed him, earning him another glare from Rowan which he seemed oblivious to.
Charlie nodded his head as he listened to his fellow magical creature enthusiast before grinning at him and placing a hand on his shoulder. “Thanks, Barnaby.”
“Wait,” Rowan called as Charlie started to hurry down the hall, causing him to skid to a halt and look back at her quizzically. She paused a moment as she contemplated her next move before sighing and giving in. “Bring her some blankets. It’s cold.”
Charlie smiled softly at her as he hurried back over to them. “Yeah, that’s a good idea. Thanks.”
“I gave her my robes to help her keep warm,” Barnaby chimed in.
Charlie grinned at him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. “That was very thoughtful of you, I’m sure they’re helping a lot.”
Once Rowan returned from the Slytherin Dorm with a couple blankets piled in her arms she handed them off to Charlie, albeit a bit reluctantly. “Don’t be up there too long.”
“Yeah, you guys have to come down and have cocoa with us,” Barnaby added with a grin which was the complete opposite vibe of Rowan’s warning.
“Cocoa sounds great. I’ll do my best,” Charlie told them, thanking Rowan again for the blanket before he hurried off to the Astronomy Tower.
“Ady,” Charlie called as he entered the top of the Astronomy Tower. His eyes scanned the area before he began walking around, trying to find his friend. “Ady, are you still up here?”
Keira had slid down the parapet that surrounded the tower collapsing onto the floor, Barnaby’s robes still wrapped around her. She sat on the ground, curled up into a ball, withdrawing into herself. Her knees were pulled up to her chest with her head buried in them, her hands tangled up in her hair as she clawed at her scalp, shoving her hair out of her face, as she quietly sobbed.
Charlie stopped and stared at the heartbreaking scene before him. His chest tightened as he tried to process seeing the normally so strong and put together Keira looking utterly hopeless and defenseless. Besides probably Rowan, none of them had ever seen Keira like this. Even when Rowan told them about Keira’s breakdowns he could never really envision it. She kept so much to herself. She never wanted them to see her like this. She didn’t want Rowan to either but it was hard to hide it from her.
For a moment Charlie thought about leaving her alone and giving her her privacy. However, when he saw her shiver from the increasingly frosty air he glanced down at the blankets in his arms before daring to walk over to her.
Keira’s head jolted up when she felt another weight on her shoulders. How did this keep happening? She glanced briefly at the blanket around her shoulders before looking up at the culprit, very surprised not to see Rowan or Barnaby.
“…Charlie,” she asked, as if her eyes were playing tricks on her.
“Hey,” Charlie greeted softly, with a small warm smile.
“Wh-what are you doing up here,” Keira asked as she quickly wiped away her tears still streaming down her face.
Charlie frowned slightly as he watched her. He didn’t mean to embarrass her. “Well, I heard you turned down cocoa to stay up here so I thought I should bring you some blankets to make sure you stay warm.” He tried to lightly joke about the cocoa, throwing her a reassuring smile but unfortunately that didn’t seem to make the situation much better.
“I’m fine. It’s not that cold,” she sniffled. “And I’d prefer chocolate right now over cocoa.”
“Right, right, I know, Canadian. Still,” Charlie said handing out the other blanket to her. “And I’ll remember chocolate for next time,” he added with another grin, another attempt to get her to smile, even a little one.
Keira eyed the blanket a moment before begrudgingly taking it from him. There, was he happy now?
Apparently he was since he smiled slightly as he watched her drape the blanket over her lap, doing her best to cocoon herself in the blanket layers around her.
“There. You gave me the blankets, I’m all toasty warm now, so you can go. Go and have cocoa with the rest of them,” Keira dismissed, waving a hand at him and the staircase door as she avoided eye contact with him.
“…What about you,” Charlie asked tenderly.
Keira froze up a moment at the unexpected gentle and caring tone of his voice. Why did he have to be so sweet? Made it hard to be cold and dismissive in an attempt to push her friends away when they were so caring!
“I’m fine. I want to be alone,” she informed him, hugging the blanket around her shoulders closer to her.
Charlie nodded his head and studied her a moment, contemplating his next move before slipping his bag off over his head and sitting on the ground next to her.
“What are you doing? I said I want to be alone,” Keira snapped.
“I know but I don’t think it’s good for you to be alone right now,” Charlie answered. Keira turned her head slightly to watch the Gryffindor closely as he made himself comfortable on the floor next to her, scooting under the blankets with her, draping them over his lap and shoulders as well.
She tried to think of something to say to argue his statement but she was having a hard time coming up with anything. Probably because he may be right.
Plus the fact that the second eldest Weasley radiated warmth like his favorite creatures was comforting in its own way in the chilly night air.
Once Charlie got himself situated under the blankets he smiled warmly over at her causing Keira to glance away. Sorry, Charlie, but she was not in the mood to be smiling and happy just yet so she had to get away from his infectious grin.
“I suppose you want to talk, know what’s going on with me,” Keira muttered as she wrapped her arms around her legs, hugging her knees closer to her, her right arm brushing against him since they had to be practically pressed together to both be completely covered under the blankets.
“Only if you need to. We don’t have to talk about it you don’t want to,” Charlie assured. “Don’t have to talk at all even.” Unlike some of their other friends, like Rowan who had such a thirst for knowledge, who would want to know, need to know, what was going on to make her so upset to comfort her, Charlie just wanted to make her feel better. Sure, he would like to know what was bothering her to better help, but he wanted to be a comforting and supportive figure at all times, for anything going on with her, even things she didn’t want to discuss. Or wasn’t ready to talk about yet.
So whenever she was upset about anything she knew she could always turn to him and he would be there and wouldn’t interrogate her with a million questions. He was simply there for her in any way she needed. If she needed to talk something out, or just vent and have someone listen, have someone lighten the mood and take her mind off of things, or even someone to just have near as they sat in silence with.
They sat in silence for a while, Charlie shifting to lean back against the parapet as he stared up at the night sky.
“You probably think I’m crazy,” Keira murmured after a moment, breaking the silence.
“I don’t think you’re crazy,” Charlie assured with a small chuckle.
“I keep storming out of rooms and I’m sure Barnaby told you guys what happened at Quidditch practice,” Keira said before a realization dawned on her. “And I’m sure Rowan told you about what happened before Astronomy Class,” she groaned, sounding somewhat embarrassed.
“Oh yeah, your outburst at Professor Rakepick,” Charlie murmured, remembering it himself.
“So she did tell you about it, great,” Keira grumbled.
“Well… not exactly. I mean, I think I overhead her talking to Barnaby about it but…” Charlie watched her a moment before sighing. He didn’t want to upset her more by telling her he saw her outburst at Professor Rakepick firsthand but he also didn’t want to lie to her or make her think her friends were sitting around talking about her negatively. “I sort of…saw it. I was… kind of there,” he admitted awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“What?” Keira’s head popped up off her knees before turning to face him, the first time all night she had directly looked at him that wasn’t some passing glance. Charlie was now the one avoiding eye contact as he continued to stare up at the sky trying to ignore her heated gaze on him. “What do you mean you were there? I didn’t see you!”
Oh great, déjà vu.
“I was behind a tree… I was looking for you to make sure you were okay and I found you the same time Professor Rakepick did, she was just closer. So I hid behind a tree and tried to figure out a reason why we were both outside so late so I could get us out of trouble. Before I had time to do that you sort of went off on her. I didn’t know you were going to do that!” Charlie quickly explained the situation from his point of view before she had a chance to start accusing him of being a creeper spy like Rowan did or thinking poorly of him.
“Oh my – putain de merde!” That set Keira off on another outburst but in French as she did some times when she was so overwhelmed or upset she couldn’t fathom it in English, so Charlie had no real idea what she was saying but she was flailing her hands a lot and appeared to be mortified so he could assume what she was going on about.
“Okay, okay, okay! It’s alright, I don’t think less of you or anything,” Charlie tried to reassure as he grabbed at her hands to stop them from flailing and grab her attention. He managed to finally capture her hands in his after a few failed attempts, stopping her frantic hand waving that accompanied her bi-lingual rant. He lowered their hands to their laps as she started to calm down and thankfully stopped her French rambling. His warm hands encompassing her naturally icy ones provided their own comfort and calming quality.
“It’s okay,” he said again gently, “I know you weren’t planning on having an audience or probably even planning on having that outburst – although, I must say it did sound pretty well thought out,” he complimented causing Keira to groan. Like she wasn’t embarrassed enough! “And, alright, I admit it was a little frightening, but-“ Keira let out another mortified groan and sunk her head lower, “But,” he reiterated, giving her hands a reassuring squeeze, “It was also… pretty impressive. I mean, badass. That’s what you’d like to be called, right? You stood up for what you believe. That’s what it sounded like anyway. And you stood up to Professor Rakepick which is not an easy thing to do. Well, easier than standing up to Professor Snape probably,” he laughed slightly.
“Listen, I know you’re having a hard day. We all know you’re having a hard day. And that’s okay. You don’t have to hold everything inside all the time. It’s not healthy. It’ll take a toll on you. And it’s going to find its way out in one way or another. And sometimes when you’re having a hard time you can’t help spreading that around, snapping at people… misery loves company, that’s what my mum says. And sure, you’re bound to be embarrassed by your behavior because it’s emotional and out of the norm, especially for you because, you know, you don’t really like being emotional. But we all have bad days and times when our emotions get the best of us, so we understand. I mean, you’re always there for us when we’re struggling and having a bad day and are understanding and don’t think any less of us, so why wouldn’t we do the same for you?”
Keira seemed to relax as she listened to Charlie’s reassuring words, letting them sink in as she processed them. Charlie watched her a moment before smiling encouragingly. “And, to be honest, I think she was kind of impressed with you going off on her like that. I don’t think you’re going to get in too much trouble. Maybe none at all.”
“So… you don’t think I’m crazy or irrational or whatever,” Keira asked quietly as she kept her gaze down.
“No, I don’t think you’re crazy. I think you’re having a hard, emotionally exhausting time and it finally burst out after you tried to hold it all in,” Charlie reassured, causing a small smile to form on Keira’s face even if only for a brief moment.
“Wow, you’re a great Prefect,” Keira told him before quickly adding after a beat, “And older brother.”
Charlie couldn’t help but beam at that compliment. “Thank you.” Take that, Bill!
“I don’t know how you and Rowan could ever look at me the same after witnessing that,” Keira admitted.
“We’re both worried about you. And, okay, maybe a little more scared of you than before but I thought you’d like that,” Charlie teased, surprised to hear a small laugh escape from Keira.
“You guys have to stop worrying about me so much,” Keira told him.
Charlie couldn’t help but scoff slightly. “Easier said than done. I care about you.” Keira looked up at him, appearing somewhat surprised by his honest and genuine declaration. Her grey eyes locking on his caused him to falter briefly. “W-we care about you. We’re you’re friends,” he added much more clumsily than his previous statement.
Keira’s eyes searched his face a moment before smiling softly. “I don’t know how I got so lucky to have such amazing, caring people in my life.”
Charlie smiled back at her, giving her hands another squeeze before the sudden realization they were still holding hands dawned on both of them and a faint blush spread across both their faces.
“Uh, well, you know, we’re your friends,” Charlie said inelegantly as they both awkwardly took their hands away from each other. He cleared his throat before continuing. “We’re your friends. We care about you. And when you care about someone you’re always there for them no matter what.”
Keira nodded her head a couple times, agreeing with his statement, before her face started to scrunch up as she tried to hold back more tears but it was in vain. Charlie tensed up as tears once again ran down Keira’s face. Those were not happy tears! Oh crap, what did he do to make her start crying again? He thought they had gotten past this and she was smiling and laughing and feeling better!
“Oh shit, I’m sorry!” Charlie panicked slightly as Keira buried her face in her hands. He didn’t know what he said or did to cause her to cry but he felt awful. He slid his arm underneath the blanket resting across their shoulders and hesitantly draped an arm around her shaking frame. He knew she wasn’t really comfortable with a lot of physical contact but in his family they were pretty tactile, physically affectionate and comforting people. Fortunately, she didn’t shrink away from him or seem to mind the physical act of comfort at all.
After a few moments Keira seemed to calm her breathing down enough to speak clearly. “No, you’re right. And I want to help, I just don’t know how,” she wept.
Charlie watched her attentively, trying to decipher what she was talking about. He felt it was safe to determine she wanted to help someone but didn’t know how to, but who she wanted to help and why she was struggling so much with what to do was a complete blank for him. Was it one of their friends? Was someone in their group having an issue they were all unaware of? Keira was normally the one everyone in their gang opened up to.
“Well, I’m sure we can figure something out –“ he tried to reassure before she cut him off.
“I can’t tell you.” Charlie nodded his head. Okay, he could understand if it was a private matter. But then how was he supposed to help her figure out how to help this person if he didn’t know what the problem was?
“It’s just not fair,” Keira continued. “Someone so giving and caring and good – a good person – should not have to suffer and struggle so much! And I just want to help but I can’t,” she sobbed as Charlie attempted to soothe her by rubbing her back.
“Why can’t you,” Charlie asked gently, hoping this was a safer question and route to go than what the actual problem was for whomever they were talking about.
“Because,” she shouted defensively before her shoulders slumped and she once again appeared broken and defeated, “I’m not capable enough to.”
Charlie was unable to hold back his cynical laugh but he did his best to stifle it, especially when Keira looked rather offended by it.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry. I just… You? Not being capable? Come on.” Keira continued to stare at him incredulously. “You have overcame every obstacle that’s stood in your way when facing these Cursed Vaults and finding your brother. You’ve learned every charm, potion, transfiguration, learned all you can about any and all subjects even remotely related to these Vaults, you’ve snuck into forbidden places, dueled and fought off powerful witches, wizards, and creatures – there’s nothing you can’t overcome. So pardon me for not believing you when you say you’re not capable enough.”
Keira studied him a moment silently before turning to look away, casting her gaze down once again. “There you go again with the reassuring, big brother/Prefect, speech,” she muttered.
“Ah, but I’m not your big brother or your Prefect,” Charlie replied, grinning at her compliment nonetheless and the fact that it had helped, even a little, since she was no longer a bawling mess.
“No, you’re not,” Keira agreed quietly. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her chest as more tears welled up in her eyes. Oh, Merlin, she wished Jacob was here. She could talk to Jacob about this. He’d be the only one to really understand what she was feeling. She took in a deep, shaky breath as she shoved thoughts of Jacob aside. She could not handle missing her brother on top of everything else she was dealing with today. She was already overwhelmed enough, adding Jacob to the equation… it would be too much, overpowering; it would be disastrous. “And I appreciate you saying all that. But I think the only reason I’m able to do all that is because you guys all help me,” she admitted.
“I don’t know. You’re a pretty determined person. I think even without us helping you’d find a way,” Charlie disclosed to her, resting his arm around her shoulders once again, a bit more casually this time, causing Keira to scoff slightly.
“Determined? Or stubborn,” she asked with a small smirk.
Charlie smirked slightly himself before replying. “You’re strong and smart and brave – you’re highly capable. We’re just here to offer our support.”
“I could have never gotten into or through the Forbidden Forest without you,” Keira said, turning to look up at him once again. Her sincere confession had caught the Gryffindor off guard as he sat there sort of gawking at her. Hey, he was supposed to be the one reassuring her, not the other way around! But hearing that she needed him really touched him. A faint blush spread across his face and he swore he saw Keira smirk smugly to herself, if even for a brief second.
“And I could never brew potions as great as Penny,” Keira added, snapping Charlie out of his thoughts.
“Well no one can brew potions like Penny, not even Professor Snape,” Charlie declared. Keira nodded her head slightly before resting her chin on top of her knees, once again looking defeated and lost. Charlie watched her a moment with a frown before a thought dawned on him.
“Wait, is that what you need? A potion?” When Keira didn’t reply he continued. “Because if you need a potion you could ask Penny. She would do anything to help you and making a potion is clearly no problem for her. And you know it would be done right, so why don’t you just –“
“I can’t.” Keira cut him off once again with a cold remark.
“I’m sure she could make it no questions asked if you tell her you can’t disclose to her why you need it. She would understand. And it’s for you. She’d make you any potion you wanted even if you didn’t tell her why you needed it,” Charlie tried to reassure.
“It’s not that simple,” Keira informed him but that didn’t really tell Charlie much.
“Why not,” he asked innocently.
“Because it’s not! It’s more complicated than that and I can’t tell you why it is! And even if I did ask her to make me this potion I need without telling her explicitly who or what it’s for she would easily figure it out. So, no, I cannot ask Penny to make me the potion I need.” Charlie couldn’t help but flinch slightly at her harsh tone but he understood her frustration and knew it wasn’t personal.
“Okay… So why not try and make it yourself,” he suggested carefully.
“I can’t! I told you I’m not capable. It’s complicated and hard and I’ll probably make some deadly poison instead,” Keira groaned before placing her forehead against her knees as she buried her face once again in despair.
Charlie resumed rubbing her back as he thought of what to say. Since his attempts at reassuring her and providing helpful suggestions were not going over well, he thought he’d try his hand again at lightening the mood. “Maybe Professor Snape will help you,” he joked, causing a hollow laugh from the downtrodden Slytherin.
“I thought about trying to find some to buy from some shady dealer in Knockturn Alley or something but I wouldn’t feel comfortable trusting it,” Keira admitted as she sat back upright.
“I’m sorry I’m not very good at Potions,” Charlie admitted apologetically.
“It’s okay. I wouldn’t expect you to be anyway,” Keira replied.
“Hey!” Now it was Charlie’s turn to be the offended one. His insulted cry caused the Slytherin to laugh as she apologized, and this time it actually sounded like a genuine laugh which encouraged him to continue. “You think the only thing I’m good for is trekking around the Forbidden Forest?”
“No. You also know a lot about Quidditch,” Keira retorted with a smirk before laughing more at Charlie’s exaggerated reaction.
“Oh so I’m good for two things! When you want to talk about Quidditch or hear about dragons Charlie is the one you need! Need a potion or skilled wizard don’t bother.”
“That’s not true,” Keira told him between laughs. “Andre is the one to go to to talk about Quidditch.”
“Ohhhh well excuse me,” Charlie cried out, causing Keira to laugh more. “So I’m just the one to go to when it’s about dragons or wandering around the Forbidden Forest? And I specify dragons because I know if I say magical creatures you’ll say you have Barnaby for that,” he accused, Keira nodding her head to confirm his suspicion. “Oh, okay, so I’m just the dragon specialist then?”
“Dragon Master,” Keira corrected.
“Dragon Mas- Dragon Master? Actually that’s a pretty cool title. Dragon Master.” Charlie stopped his overdramatic antics to mull over this new name while Keira’s laughter finally started to die down.
She really needed that.
Charlie looked over at her, once he decided that Dragon Master should be his official new nickname, and smiled to himself as he saw her finally smiling. Even if it didn’t completely reach her eyes, even if there was still this hopelessness lingering around her, he made her smile, got her to laugh, and gave her a little bit more happiness in this awful day she was having.
“Hey,” he spoke softly, grabbing her attention as she looked up at him curiously. “We’ll figure it out.” Keira smiled sadly up at him but there was a small glimmer of hope in her eyes. He gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze before, much to his surprise, Keira shifted to lay her head on his shoulder.
“Did you want to see some drawings I did today instead of taking notes in class,” Charlie asked after a moment, reaching over to grab his bag with his free hand. He felt like he had his best luck that night at making her feel better by getting her mind off of whatever was bothering her.
“Are they of dragons,” Keira asked in a slight mocking tone.
“I wouldn’t be the Dragon Master if they weren’t,” Charlie retorted as he brought out his notes from today’s lessons and laid them on his lap. “This is a Hungarian Horntail,” he started, pointing to a dragon sketch on top of his Charms notes.
“Of course it is,” Keira muttered. He drew one of those every day, she swore, since it was his favorite.
“Yeah, yeah,” Charlie teased, moving on to the next page of notes. “These are a couple of ideas I had if you bred a Swedish Short-Snout with a Chinese Fireball.” Keira let out a small chuckle at the weird looking snout that could possibly be produced if these two breeds ever mated. Charlie smiled to himself as he heard her amused laugh. So far, so good.
He appreciated that he could talk to her for hours about dragons, his theories, show her his drawings like these of what crossbreeds may look like, and she never appeared bored or annoyed. In fact she would ask insightful questions about his theories, sometimes even add to them, ask about dragon blood uses, if there were ethical ways to attain dragon hide-made clothing or dragon horns which are used in many potions.
Charlie turned to his next page of notes before tensing up slightly. Oh no, these were his Defense Against the Dark Arts notes. That’s when her already bad day became unbearable. Maybe he could just casually set those aside and move on to another page…
“What’s that,” Keira asked, pointing to a drawing he had done on the bottom of his parchment.
Charlie hesitated before answering her. If this made her start crying again he might as well pack up and leave because clearly he wasn’t comforting her as well as he should be, or at least wanted to be. He didn’t want to keep making her feel reassured and laugh to then become a sobbing mess again! He had to break this cycle!
“That’s uh… Well, you know today’s lesson was on werewolves so naturally I thought what would happen if a werewolf bit a dragon,” he cautiously explained, watching her closely as she continued to stare at his dragon drawing. So far no crying…
“So, I present to you the weredragon,” Charlie said a bit proudly of his new creation. His illustration depicted a creature with a dragon body and tail but werewolf like claws and a werewolf head, fur trailing down its neck and tail and along the back of its legs as well as along its wings. Keira studied the image closely, silently, the expression on her face unreadable. He was not going to be able to handle it if she burst into tears again, especially because of him and his drawing he just had to show her.
“…What do you think,” he asked warily. He was stunned when a smile crept onto her face. He for sure thought this was going to lead to another emotional breakdown, one he would feel entirely responsible for and, therefore, horrible.
“I love it.” Well that certainly was not the reaction he was expecting! “I think it’s my favorite.” Charlie grinned to himself and relaxed as Keira stared at his drawing fondly.
“Yeah? Well then I’ll draw you your own and you can hang it up in your room,” Charlie told her.
“Only if you sign it,” Keira replied, glancing up at him briefly to throw him a small smile, earning a smile back from the Gryffindor.
“Okay, but it’s not going to be worth anything,” Charlie replied.
“It’s worth something to me,” Keira informed him.
Charlie grinned to himself as he felt warmth spread within him from his chest. He slid his Defense Against the Dark Arts notes onto her lap so she could continue to admire his illustration before continuing on with his next set of notes. “This is an Ukranian Ironbelly setting fire to a small village.”
“Wow, that’s a bit gruesome and dark for you,” Keira observed.
“I have to stay true to the dragons and their natural instincts. Besides, the people of this village probably try to steal its eggs and kill its kind so it’s just retaliating to defend itself and kin,” Charlie explained.
“Wow so there’s like a whole backstory to your drawings,” Keira teased. “Maybe you should write a book.” Charlie chuckled before attempting to further this tale he already began, even creating some actual characters with names and their own backstory, lightheartedly cultivating this imaginary book of his.
The two sat atop the Astronomy Tower, discussing dragons, other magical creatures, and wherever their conversation led them, exchanging ideas, balancing out their teasing with reassuring encouragement, accompanied with some laughter.
The image of the couple cuddled up under their layers of blankets as they deepened their bond through meaningful, pleasant, and enjoyable conversation was illuminated by the bright light radiating down from the full moon that hung ominously in the velvet night sky.
“That’s Algiz, that’s Teiwaz,” Keira explained as she motioned to the corresponding runes, causing the eldest Weasley to stare at his practice test she administered for him in confusion.
“How do you remember all this,” Bill asked as he continued to look over his answers, focusing on the wrong ones.
Keira shrugged. “I don’t know, just do. They’re used in alchemy and I love alchemy so maybe that’s why,” she suggested. Bill nodded his head, half listening to her before groaning, his head flopping back on to the couch. The two were sitting on the floor in front of the fire in the Gryffindor Common Room, leaning comfortably back against the couch. Keira had perfected the art of getting in and out of other Common Rooms, partially with Penny’s help who somehow learned how to get in and out of every House’s Common Room in her First Year – her popularity most likely aided in that. But Keira figured out her own way of getting into the Gryffindor Common Room all by herself Second Year, which she was pretty proud of. And who didn’t like being a little rebellious and being somewhere they shouldn’t be? Fortunately, no one really seemed to mind when she was in another House’s Dorm.
“I’m never going to get this,” Bill groaned hopelessly. “How am I supposed to remember everything from the past seven year plus everything they’re going to teach us this year for the N.E.W.T.s,” he cried out in despair.
“Don’t worry, you’ll pass them all with Outstanding’s…. Well at least Exceeds Expectations,” Keira attempted to reassure, and maybe also tease a little.
“But I need O’s to become a Curse-Breaker,” Bill exclaimed. She had never seen the Gryffindor so stressed out before and it was honestly scary.
“How about we take a break –“ she began to suggest calmly which unfortunately caused Bill to erupt in another frantic, stressful shriek.
“There’s no time for breaks!” Keira stared at him with wide, fearful eyes.
“Okay… then, how about you keep studying and I’ll go get us some study snacks and make us some tea or cocoa…. Or maybe something stronger,” she muttered as she carefully stood up and took a couple steps away from the hysterical, anxious mess that was formerly William Weasley. How could she forget study snacks, they were an essential part to the studying process!
Bill continued to pour over his many textbooks and parchment piles of notes, mumbling incoherently, probably reading out loud to himself in an attempt to help him better remember. Seeing him like this was really causing Keira to consider leaving after Sixth year so she wouldn’t have to suffer through this same, sad fate.
As she contemplated her future the arrival of another redhead caught her attention. “Charlie!” Eagerly calling out his name like that was a little embarrassing but she managed to brush it off as she reached into her bag and pulled out a small box tied up with a ribbon before hurrying over to him.
Charlie paused when he heard his name called upon entering the Gryffindor Common Room after Quidditch practice. He had planned on going straight upstairs to take a shower but someone sounded like they needed to speak with him right away. He was quite surprised to see the Slytherin bounding toward him. No matter how many times he saw her in their Common Room he was always surprised. How did she always manage to get in there? Not that he was complaining!
“Hey,” he greeted with his classic, infectious smile, running a hand through his hair possibly trying to tame it from its sweaty mess thanks to his Quidditch practice. Oh great, he probably smelled awful…
It had been a little over a week since he found her crying on top of the Astronomy Tower and since then things had felt a little awkward between them considering he found her sobbing on top of the Astronomy Tower. Keira wasn’t one to normally show her emotions or be so vulnerable in front of anyone, so he was sure she felt a little embarrassed about that and he didn’t want to make her feel judged in any way or like their relationship had changed; although, clearly it had changed, but not in a negative way! He didn’t want to make her feel awkward in any sort of way so he had been keeping a slight distance between them, thinking she may want some space from him after sharing such a vulnerable moment with him. They hadn’t really spoken or spent time alone since then.
Although when they had their next Defense Against the Dark Arts class he did try to give her a little pep talk, accompanied with a brief pumping up shoulder massage like one gave boxers, before they entered the classroom with Barnaby and the rest of their friends who shared that class with them, and continued to give her reassuring looks throughout the class.
Also, as promised, he drew her her own personal weredragon picture which he slid over to her the other day while their gang was having another study session in the library. Keira looked thrilled to receive it and he was pretty positive she wanted to give him a hug. She did slide it back over to him to have him sign it, although he still didn’t understand why she would want that, before she took it and hung it up by her bed in her Dorm. He was a little nervous when he gave her that picture, it could bring back memories of that night which weren’t exactly the happiest, but then, yesterday when she passed him a note in Charms asking what would an Antipodean Opaleye and a Hebridean Black crossbreed look like he felt reassured that things were well between them.
Despite those moments, they still had not spent any time one-on-one, their friends always around them when they interacted the past week and a half. Until now, it seemed.
“Hey,” Keira greeted with a grin as she stopped in front of him. “Have a nice practice?”
“Yeah, it was… tiring,” Charlie admitted, sounding a bit out of breath actually. “What are you doing in here,” he asked curiously before he was unable to resist teasing her, a charming smirk playing on his lips. “Wait, don’t tell me you were waiting for me? Miss me?”
Keira rolled her eyes but couldn’t help smirking slightly herself. “No. I’m here helping your brother study for his N.E.W.T.s – Ancient Runes,” she informed him, motioning to his disaster of an older brother behind her.
“My mind’s been Obliviated,” Bill groaned.
Charlie glanced over her shoulder before wincing slightly. “I’ve never seen him so stressed before.”
“Yeah, me neither. But once he gets through his exams and finds out he passed them all and is able to become a Curse-Breaker he’ll be back to his chill, cool self,” Keira reassured before handing him the small wrapped box excitedly. “Here.”
Charlie looked down at the apparent gift for him. “What? What’s this,” he asked curiously as he hesitantly took the box from her.
“It’s a thank you slash early birthday present,” Keira told him, unable to keep herself from grinning.
Charlie studied the box a moment before frowning slightly. “You don’t have to get me anything.” Of all the Weasley’s she had encountered, Charlie was the worst one at accepting gifts. She was well aware, as were most people, they were not the wealthiest family but she wasn’t trying to give them any sort of handouts out of pity. She didn’t think a birthday or Christmas gift was out of line, or a thank you for being there for me when I needed you gift.
“But I wanted to,” Keira informed him matter-of-factly, so don’t argue with her! “Besides, everyone should get something for their birthday.”
“But it’s not my birthday yet –“
“I said it was an early birthday present,” Keira corrected him. “Slash, thank you gift. Just open it,” she urged excitedly.
Charlie huffed slightly, not nearly as excited as she was, before untying the ribbon around the box. “Alright, alright.” His grumbling came to a halt when his eyes saw what lay in the box.
His gift was a small bronze statuette of a dragon. Although it had no real discernible features if he had to wager a guess it was probably a Hebridean Black since it had four legs and wings, instead of its wings making up its front claws as well, and had an arrow-shaped spike at the end of its tail. Whether she bought this because it resembled her favorite dragon or for some other reason, like it being the only kind they had, he had no idea, but since it resembled her favorite dragon on top of her gifting it to him he would definitely always think of her when he looked at it.
He stammered slightly as he took the tiny dragon figurine out of its box for a closer look, trying to find the words to thank her but he was also mesmerized by this unexpected present. Keira looked a bit smug, but mainly overjoyed, as she watched Charlie’s eyes lit up.
“But wait, there’s more,” Keira announced excitedly, causing Charlie to look at her quizzically before glaring at her slightly as she took the statuette out of his hand. Hey, that was his! She walked over to one of the tables in the Gryffindor Common Room and set his dragon figurine on it, Charlie close behind – she took his dragon!
“What? Does it do something,” Charlie asked curiously as he studied it closely. “Ooo, does it breathe fire,” he asked excitedly. Finally he was getting enthusiastic over receiving a present!
“Not yet,” Keira replied with a smirk as she took out her wand. “As you may or may not know, Professor McGonagall has been giving me some private lessons in Transfigurations.” She cleared her throat before pointing her wand at the dragon statuette. “Draconifors.” With a slash of her wand a fiery red light emerged and illuminated his figurine. When it dissipated his dragon had appeared to come to life!
Charlie’s eyes widened the size of bludgers before he let out some inhuman noise of pure elation. “It’s a dragon!” Keira laughed slightly as his overjoyed reaction, moving her wand slightly to cause his now living dragon figurine to walk along the table. Charlie crouched down to be eye level with his little dragon, watching it in fascination. He was like a kid in Honeydukes. Keira smirked more before, with a flick of her wrist, the dragon leapt onto Charlie’s head. He let out another excited squeal, for lack of a better word, as he slowly stood up, his eyes rolling as far as they could, attempting to look at the dragon on top of his head.
“This is the best gift I’ve ever gotten,” he informed her as he carefully reached up to grab the dragon from his head and gently held it in his hand.
“I’m very happy to hear that. But it’s not a real dragon, unfortunately. I mean, it kind of is, but not really,” Keira tried to explain. “I asked Professor McGonagall to teach me the Draconifors Spell after reading about it in one of the additional readings she suggested to me. It’s supposed to be able to transform small objects into dragons that you can control. They’re obviously a lot smaller and less powerful than a real dragon but they’re still really cool. And cute.”
Charlie stroked the tiny dragon in his palm with one finger from his free hand. “It is cute,” he agreed, sounding like he was only half listening. Keira wasn’t going to take offense to him ignoring her at the moment.
“You know, if you’re good I’ll teach you the spell and you can turn this little guy, or any small object, into a dragon whenever you want,” Keira offered.
That seemed to grab Charlie’s attention as his head snapped up to look at her. “Yeah? Really?”
“Well, if you’re good and don’t piss me off,” Keira reiterated.
“I drew you a personalized, signed, picture,” Charlie argued.
“So? Barnaby draws me a magical creature picture every day,” Keira informed him. So he would have to do better!
“How about, if Gryffindor beats Slytherin in the next Quidditch match you have to teach me,” Charlie wagered causing Keira to scoff.
“I am not going to be able to handle you crying after you lose,” Keira retorted.
“I would not cry! …. Need I remind you I helped you get through the Forbidden Forest to find the Cursed-Vault in there,” Charlie replied with a smirk.
“Need I remind you how I helped you gather up enough money to get a dragon egg from some shady dealer which turned out to be an Acromantula egg,” Keira debated, placing her hands on her hips. She was pretty sure she won that round.
Charlie and Keira glared playfully at each other before something out of the corner of the Seeker’s eye caught his attention. “Uh, Ady, I think your study buddy is having a nervous breakdown.”
Keira frowned quizzically before turning around to see Bill agitatedly running his fingers through his hair and pulling at it. Oh, Merlin, he was literally about to pull his hair out.
“William, no! Your hair is your best feature. You’ll never be able to get a date without it,” Keira cried as she hurried over to eldest Weasley and grabbed onto his wrists. Charlie chuckled slightly as he watched them before turning his attention back to his new little dragon. Hmm, what should he name it…
“Charles!” Charlie’s head snapped up when he heard his name, and not his friendlier nickname, called. “Help me with your brother,” Keira demanded as she tried to wrestle Bill’s hands away from his head.
Charlie glanced down at the tiny dragon in his hand. “Come on little guy, let’s go show you to Bill. That should take his mind off his exams.”
~*~*~*~
“Ooo chocolate cake,” Keira gasped excitedly as she grabbed a slice of the leftover dessert from dinner. It was another late night hang out in the kitchens of Hogwarts for the Cursed-Vaults Gang…Crew… they had yet to decide on a name.
“Could you grab me some too, please,” Penny asked politely as she gathered drinks for everyone.
Keira cut another slice of cake for the Hufflepuff and set it on a plate before licking off some remnants of chocolate icing off her fingers. “So…” Keira glanced over as she was joined by the Gryffindor Seeker who swooped in and leaned casually back against the stone wall next to her. “Looks like things are good now between you and Penny.”
“Were we fighting,” Keira asked curiously.
“Well, not exactly, but you can’t deny there was some tension between you two for a while there. I mean, she did cause you to storm out of the library that one time,” Charlie reminded her.
Keira glanced back at the blonde Hufflepuff as she handed out everyone’s drinks to them. “Yeah, well, we’re good now,” she told him with a small smile. “Actually… there was sort of a… crucial situation that kind of made us address the issue. And I think it was really good, for both of us. She got to face and work through some things and I got her to teach me how to brew that potion I needed so I’d call it a win-win,” she confided in him.
“Yeah? That’s great,” Charlie exclaimed with a grin. “See, I told you we’d figure it out.”
Keira frowned slightly and paused. “Wait, what did you do, exactly?”
“I provided emotional support?” Keira fought back a smile as she looked up at the cheesy grin of the Gryffindor.
“That may be true but that didn’t necessarily help resolve the issue,” Keira pointed out.
“The point is it’s figured out so all is well. See, no point in all that blubbering,” Charlie teased earning himself a playful – well, partially playful, partially anger fueled – smack from the Slytherin. “Ow!” Charlie rubbed his chest where she hit him, trying to appear emotionally hurt but he couldn’t keep from smiling. He was glad they were at the point where they could talk and joke about it now and it wasn’t awkward or uncomfortable anymore.
“Oh, you’re fine. You get hit by bludgers all the time,” Keira retorted as she picked up the two plates of chocolate cake.
“I think you stopped my heart for a second there,” Charlie teased causing Keira to roll her eyes as she smirked to herself.
“Maybe that’ll teach you to be nicer to me,” Keira replied a bit smugly as she turned to bring Penny her piece of cake.
“Maybe…” Charlie started before a smirk spread across his face and he quickly snatched a plate of chocolate cake out of her hand – this was not the Golden Snitch! “Or maybe I like a challenge,” he cried in typical Gryffindor fashion, before hurrying away from her and to the safety of their friend group.
“Charles!”

Connerie – Bullshit
Putain de merde – Fucking shit
Needed Information on my MC: Nereida Keira-Adelyn Black, goes by her middle names, Charlie likes to call her Ady; born in Ireland, grew up in Canada; part undine;
Remus Lupin is legal guardian/godfather, although not feeling he was the best fit to take care of Jacob and Keira (financially or for health reasons) after their mother passed they were raised by close friends of their mom in Canada. When they decided to attend Hogwarts instead of staying in Canada for school to connect with their Irish and English heritage, Remus, being the only person they knew, and really family they had, when they arrived in the UK for school, did his best to watch over them and take care of them since he couldn’t leave them to fend for themselves in a new country all alone. Fortunately, they were very independent and when he took the necessary precautions during the full moon he didn’t have to worry so much about them managing on their own. He didn’t feel comfortable staying at their home without them their so he really only lived with them (and had a good place to live/stay) during holidays and the summers, assuming the moon phase allowed. He also, of course, refused to accept any money or gifts from them although Keira demanded he should get a birthday and Christmas present at least and promised not to be too extravagant (but it’s not fair he has to live in poverty, he can stay at their home! He’s family!)
He and Keira clearly got very close since Jacob went missing and he proved to be probably the best at helping them with their watermarks and other undine characteristics. He tried to keep the fact that he was a werewolf from them as long as possible, not wanting to scare them or cause them any worry especially when they were so young but it wasn’t too difficult for them to figure out (he always left around the full moon every month and his nickname was Moony – come on! Keeping with tradition =p Keira found out Remus was a werewolf during her Third Year) and it ended up being a sort of bonding moment considering they were not completely human either and he knew what undergoing a painful transformation was like. (Being around Keira and Jacob who reminded him so much of Sirius and James also may have helped Remus feel less alone.) Keira is fiercely protective over Remus. They also like to send each other packages of chocolate every month – Remus may not be able to afford much be he somehow always manages to find enough money to send her a little bit of chocolate.
(One of these days I will make a post for my MC’s bio… Hope I explained her relationship to Remus well enough. I really need to make some posts just about my MC, even if no one cares and it’s just for me. Also I don’t care if people hate me trying to have my character connected to the Marauders, we all love Remus and he deserves love and happiness! Like we all don’t want to be connected to them anyway…)
A/N: I’ve been having a lot of Remus Lupin feelings lately. I’ve even started making a Remus Lupin, and a Remus x Tonks playlist… Idk… I have had some other ideas about Remus I might write although they, one in particular, would go against canon but… does that really matter? =p But there is definitely one involving Remus I really want to write so it’s going to happen, probably next! It’s almost like a werewolf trilogy thing I’m starting to create! <.<
Hello, I’m incapable of writing a short fic. =p Can’t even write a brief authors note… I have a lot of thoughts!
I know we all, particularly me, enjoy pointing out how great an older brother Bill is but Charlie is also an amazing older brother – reassuring, nonjudgmental, willing to smuggle a dragon out of Hogwarts for you, no questions asked. The Weasley’s have such great, chill, older brothers – Love this family! I also believe the Weasley family is a more affectionate family, physically and verbally; growing up with so many people, and in tighter living quarters, you also had to get used to touching someone else while just trying to eat at the table =p
Also, in case there are any questions or those who believe I’m contributing to the erasure of Charlie’s sexuality, I assure you that is not true. Being on the ace-spectrum myself (as is my MC) I am doing my best to convey him on the ace-spectrum as well. Also, just because someone is ace/aro doesn’t mean they are unable to care about others and forge meaningful relationships.
What’s the deal with me and the Astronomy Tower/Class – no idea =p I also believe the reason Professor McGonagall has not taught us the Draconifors spell is because she knows Charlie will use it all the time on everything!
Was the first Chaser who wanted more… aggressive tactics Marcus Flint? Perhaps… Did I go through the House Point leaderboard on the game and make a Slytherin Quidditch team? …Yes =p (If you’re interested let me know and I’ll post it. And if you want your MC on the team can do [I’m Captain of this ship!] – unless you want to be a Beater in which case have to be reserve, sorry, Barnaby and my MC are Beater Buddies!)
So here’s the deal – I began writing this before the Werewolf event in the game happened and I was already starting on the ending scene when the event came out so please excuse any discrepancies. I did add in a couple references to it and although clearly it would be out of order since the Werewolf event clearly happened around Halloween and this I had set late November (okay, full disclosure, I looked up the moon phases for that year and November 23 would be a full moon which I thought was perfect since I wanted it to be cold and it was close to Charlie’s birthday) BUT in my defense I started writing this first before the event came out so therefore it happens first! =p And then… idk, Time Warp =p Maybe Fenrir attacked around the Christmas feast instead of the Halloween one? The event did help me figure out how MC got Penny to teach her how to brew Wolfsbane potion which also provides a two-part epilogue! This could also work with Chiara I think too assuming Penny hadn’t met her yet so you can imagine that if it works out better for you but this was for Remus!
You’re all welcome I resisted adding a “Not Today Satan, Not Today” gif in this because the urge was real! …I still might

So. Story time.
I never really think of myself has having ptsd cause I’ve never been diagnosed with it, like I have with depression and ADHD (and there was some speculation about bipolar ii, but apparently depression/ADHD combined can also look a lot like hypomania and the depressive episodes of bipolar ii? idk? I do know that I had a minor breakdown when my then-psychiatrist mentioned it cause it was a big change to spring on someone at 23). I don’t get a lot of the symptoms typically associated with ptsd, I can’t understand them because I haven’t experienced them, and I don’t want to claim the diagnosis when I feel like my experiences are so much tamer than what so many people have gone through. Like, yes, I was assaulted, but it wasn’t rape. Yes, I kind of tried to kill myself, but it wasn’t a serious attempt (the end goal wasn’t actually death) and it wasn’t violent or bloody or that physically traumatizing (I mean I don’t think they even pumped my stomach, but to be honest I remember very little from that whole experience cause--- well, cause it was traumatizing. And my memory is crap.). What I’m going to mention here, though, is the First Big Trauma I can think of.
When I was... actually I don’t remember how old I was. I guess it was senior year? Like I said, my memory is crap. Since high school my brain has scrambled up dates like crazy, and forgotten or misremembered a lot of things, and left a lot of things vaguely floating in the ether unsure when they happened or where or if they happened at all. Anyway. My.... we’ll call him a friend. He had been a friend, anyway. Until I made the huge mistake of sleeping with him casually. With him knowing I was sleeping with other people as well. And he called my mother to tell her I was out having sex with people (don’t think he mentioned he was one of them). I don’t remember when I found out about this. It might have been before the incident in question or after. I really don’t remember the timeline. We could’ve still been tentatively close at this point, but I think I may have already been having off feelings about him, I don’t remember. Anyway. I was best friends with a different guy (the other one I was sleeping with -- look, I slept with my friends okay, I’m not saying I was a good person for it, I regret one of them immensely and wish I’d handled the other one better) who was also friends with Guy 1.
One night... and again, I don’t remember the context at all, what we were talking about or if I was talking to him at all, just that it was over iMessage somewhere after 1am, maybe after 2am. I don’t know what we were talking about. (Maybe this is why I keep records or reread through old conversations, I have the worst memory and it really irritates me that I can’t look back on logs of these convos.) Anyway. He says he’s going to kill himself. Me, being a teenager, immediately does the thing they do on tv and asks something akin to ‘do you have a plan’ or ‘how do you plan to do it’ or whatever, and he says he has a kitchen knife and I’m like FUCK no, talk to me, please talk to me, don’t do this. Do you want me to come over? I’ll sneak out and come over, please don’t do this right now. And I don’t remember a lot of the details. I was an idiot and roped Guy 2 into it cause I didn’t know how to handle this. I should’ve been a decent person and left him out of it. But maybe having someone else to talk to at the time (because of course I didn’t wake up my parents - I was breaking the rules being up and on the computer after 10pm or whatever, why would I be so rational as to talk to my loving parents about this horrible situation I’d been thrown into) was helpful in the moment. It probably was. I hope he wasn’t as scarred by the experience as I was. I don’t remember if he tried to contact Guy 1 or not. Anyway. I don’t know how long it went on. I remember mentioning to Guy 2 that maybe I should call an ambulance. I don’t remember if I did. I remember sobbing silently sneaking downstairs into the garage to get into my car cause I was going to drive to his house to talk to him if I had to. I was so shaken. I was sure that if he died it-- well it wouldn’t be my fault, exactly, but that there was more I could’ve done. I’m sure I mentioned the suicide hotline and said he should call them. I offered all the support I could give from afar.
I don’t remember the rest of that night. I know I didn’t ever open my garage door, just waited next to my car, texting constantly on my old flip phone, or maybe I was talking, I don’t know. I think I must’ve been talking. Eventually I assume I went to sleep. I don’t know who I talked to. At some point the next day I know I was involved with basically forcing the guy to talk to the school psychiatrist. I probably felt kind of proud, like I’d done the right thing. I don’t actually know if I did. You may have noticed, and I’ll state this a million times over; my memory is lacking. Maybe I said the Wrongest thing possible. I don’t know. I just know that I felt responsible for saving the guy’s life. And I was also absolutely terrified of him. Maybe it was after that that my mom told me about his ridiculous crossing of that Line between kids and parents. And just... in general. That was a line that shouldn’t have been crossed ever. And props to my mom for never confronting me about it, and generally respecting my sexual autonomy. I also remember - though, again, I don’t know when - calling him out on how ridiculously inappropriate something like that was, and him denying it. Like-- why would my mom make that up? There is literally no reason. And why choose him? Basically, I felt (rightfully) betrayed. And, of course, entirely traumatized by the whole suicide night. Eventually this became the first person I ever blocked on social media, the person who’s name still gives me chills, who I am terrified of to this day. The person who I had dreams of hunting me in my own home (didn’t help that he was on the rifle team, so I knew he knew how to shoot -- absolutely terrifying). He’s probably some boring ass white dude today. Probably living some whitebread life, working for the government. Some part of me still thinks he’s a psychopath.
Anyway. I guess what I’m trying to say is: please god, do not try to talk me down. Don’t do that to yourself. The likelihood that I will ever follow through on suicidal ideation is very very low (like I’d peg it at under 10%), and I never want anyone to go through the overwhelming fear and panic I felt that night. Leave an encouraging message. Encourage reaching out to more qualified professionals. Shoot a link to a crisis textline or something, but do not feel obligated to step in yourself. I will never try to lay the blame of my suicidality on anyone besides myself. I moved past the 13 Reasons Why mentality a long time ago. I am far more likely to argue that suicide should be a legal path for people who are adding nothing to the community as a whole than I am to argue that it’s someone else’s fault that I want to die. I think of death more logistically than emotionally at this point. It’s not a revenge fantasy. But that doesn’t mean I’m immune to really fucking depressing lines of thinking - inescapable spirals that are just impossible to talk me out of - when I’m in a bad place. No one should have to feel hopelessly frustrated at my own horrible self-talk at those times. Reaching out to people is great, but think of yourself first.
Anyway. Thanks, anon, for the support. Writing that last bit calmed me down, and I’d already considered the hotline and dismissed it cause I knew I wasn’t actually going to kill myself and just needed to vent off some panic. ❤

BUTTERFLY EFFECT: Stay with the others
(Brave goes down significantly)
Even if splitting up seemed like a bad idea, you couldn’t bring yourself to come along with Mike. The thought of going in the dark mines and possibly facing that monster made a chill run up your spine, so you just watched as Mike left the safe haven.
A deep breath you were holding in finally left your lungs. This whole situation over Emily’s bite was fucked up and you were glad it was resolved without any casualties. Everyone else was still in shock from the situation, but soon Em started to talk again, indicating she felt safe.
“I thought… that… that he was going to help us…” Staring at something in front of her, she said basically to herself.
“Who? The flamethrower dude?” wanting to confirm the answer, Sam asked.
“Now we don’t have a chance…” Em rambled on.
But Sam didn’t lose hope “No, guys, it just means we’ve got to be tough. We gotta do this on our own.” You really wanted to believe her, but you couldn’t help but be terrified.
“I don’t know if I can…” Emily fell silent.
Confident/Doubtful
Confident
You looked towards Emily as you spoke. “Sam’s right. We have to be tough. And if Mike’s lucky, we can get out of here easily with the ski lift. So we can’t give up hope just yet.”
Emily was not convinced. She turned her head towards you. “Yeah right! As if Mike can handle it! He’ll probably be eaten before he even reaches the mines. Besides, I don’t care about that psychopath anymore! He almost shot me in the face!” she answered angrily.
“True, but the only hope we have is that same psychopath! It’s not like we have a whole lot of other options…” you sighed while you put your hands on your face.
She wanted to say something back, but stopped before anything came out. It looked like she didn’t know how to answer anymore. She went back to her previous position, thinking by herself.
So the conversation ended.
Doubtful
“I don’t know Sam… Can we really trust Mike anymore… And what if he fails? We don’t have any other options. Except for waiting…” you answered her with a voice full of doubt.
Sam looked hurt. “Come on (Y/N)… I know that what Mike did is unforgivable, but that doesn’t mean he’s evil…” She sounded so sure of herself.
Emily budded into the conversation. “So you’re taking his side?! Sam, he almost shot me!”
“I know Em and I one hundred percent don’t agree with what he did, but he’s our only hope…”
“Bullshit!” Em yelled. “We have people coming to rescue us! All we have to do is wait!”
You didn’t like were the conversation was going, so you ended it. ”ENOUGH! Let’s not bite each other’s head off! Haven’t we all gotten enough tonight? Let’s agree to disagree shall we?”
Luckily, it stopped the disagreement. It sounds cliché, but this was not the time to do it.
With that it became silent again
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While we were waiting Ashley went through the strangers stuff and was silently examining it on her own, without even caring about what just happened around her. She had found a journal which held information about the Wendigo’s collected over the years by the stranger.
A certain page seemed to really catch her eye. “Oh… Oh no no no no no.”
“What? What is it? What does it say?” Sam questioned her.
“Yeah what’s wrong? Is it something bad?” You wanted to know as well.
Everyone was focused on Ashley right now. She seemed a bit hesitant to actually tell us, but your curiosity got the better of you. “Ash, you can tell us… Whatever it is.” You reassured her.
She double checked the page and started to talk. “It says that… well… the bites… If it bites you… It’s not infectious. It doesn’t do anything.” She revealed to us with a lot of relieve.
“Really…” you felt so much safer already. That’s one less thing to worry about!
You turned around to Emily with a smile on your face but it soon disappeared when you saw she was pissed. Not just pissed, furious.
“I’m sorry what did you say?” Emily snapped at Ashley.
Ashley flinched. “Em, it says you’ll be okay…” she tried to reassure her.
“It says what?”
Sam answered in Ashley’s stead. “You’re going to be fine!”
Yet Emily wasn’t happy. “Fine?! Mike almost shot me! Is that fine?!” she shouted.
‘This won’t turn out well’, you thought by yourself. But you couldn’t find it in you to interfere since you knew Em had the right to be angry. She almost got shot because of a stupid misunderstanding. So you wouldn’t be the one to silence Em.
It was Sam that didn’t want another fight. “He didn’t shoot you-“
“And this bitch almost let him!” Emily pointed angrily at Ashley, ready to go all bitch-mode on her.
“Hey! That’s not fair, she was scared-“ Sam tried but was interrupted by Emily again.
“I’m the one who’s scared!” she protested to Sam.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry Emily-“ Ash apologized. “I didn’t know what was going to happen… None of us know!” she defended herself.
Of course once Emily is in a furious state, there is no backing down from her side. “There’s- There’s no excuse! There’s no excuse for this!”
Should you do something to stop the situation from escalating? Or would it be better to let Emily vent her anger? You honestly weren’t sure.
Calm Emily down/Do nothing
Calm Emily down
The situation was getting out of hand. Sure Emily was right to be angry, but that didn’t mean she had to antagonize Ashley and blame her for everything. You could understand Ashley’s fear. We were all in a situation that was pretty dire. We had almost zero chance of escape and every minute one of those things could be getting closer to our location, cornering us with no escape. Nobody had any idea how we would react to something as traumatizing as this.
So you decided to try to calm down Emily.
“Emily stop! Hasn’t it been enough already-“
“Stop?! You want me to stop? Mike almost shot me (Y/N)!! But no. I’m the problem, I have to stop!” She yelled at you.
“I’m not saying you can’t be angry.” You kept talking calmly to her. “You have every right to be, but that doesn’t mean we have to demonize each other. Ashley was scared-“
“Oh, so you take her side?! Do you think she’s the only one who’s scared?! I’ve been through literal HELL (Y/N)!! I was stuck on my own in those mines with that thing probably watching me the whole time, and then it began to chase me! Even the smallest mistake could have killed me!” tears started to well up in her eyes. “And when I finally thought I was save, she-” pointing to Ashley “-started to convince everyone I was going to turn into a Wendigo and Mike threatened to kill me! So yeah, I’m scared!” she turned her head away, trying to get rid of the tears.
You felt really bad. The things she had witnessed must have been scarring. You honestly couldn’t believe how she was still alive. Yet here she was. Only to be seen as a possible future threat by her former friends. Almost shot in the face by her former boyfriend.
But hating them should have to wait after we were off this damned mountain. Right now we still needed to survive and rely on each other, so hate shouldn’t cloud our judgment.
You took a deep breath and looked at her again. “… What if it were me that was bit.”
Bewildered, she look at you instead of the wall she was previously facing.
“Huh?”
Everyone stared at you questioningly, wondering where you were going with this.
“If it were me, don’t you think Ashley would have reacted the same?”
“I…” she couldn’t find the right words.
“Or if it were Sam? Or even Chris? You don’t expect me believe she wouldn’t react just as bad, do you?” you asked her seriously.
“Yeah, but…” she somehow couldn’t deny what you said.
You looked over to Ashley. “Would you have freaked out if I were bit instead of Emily? You can be honest Ash.”
She looked hesitant, but answered your question anyway. “Probably… I had no idea what would happen if someone were bit, so I just freaked.” She walked over to were Emily stood. “Please Emily you have to believe me, I didn’t know…”
The tension that was present, had eased. At least now Emily knew that nobody was against her, it was just a misfortunate accident.
After a long silence she finally spoke again. “… After this whole thing is over, I won’t speak to any of you again.”
With that, the situation returned to normal. But your relationship with Emily had become really sour.
(Your relationship with Emily went down significantly)
Do nothing
Emily’s rage has nothing to do with you. Who are you to tell her she is overreacting? You didn’t just get threatened to get shot in the face by an ex-boyfriend. I mean, not even Chris is trying to help Ashley out! It was definitely not your place to stop her.
Ashley was trying to calm Emily down, though Em didn’t listen to her at all. She tried to explain herself, but probably to no avail.
“Please, Emily, please just try to understand –“ Ash begged with a shaking voice, only to be cut off by a stern Emily.
“Understand the palm of my hand, bitch” The impact of that slap made even you flinch. That must have definitely hurt, a lot… Sam was taken aback just like you.
“I’m sorry… I’m so so so so sorry…” Ash apologized profusely. You felt sorry for her. Anyone would become irrational in a terrible situation like the one we’re in. Still, it does not excuse a possible homicide just because someone might be ‘infected’.
(Your relationship with Emily didn’t change)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The strangers journal was now being examined by Sam, and it seems that she found something important.
“Shit. Shit-shit-shit! We’ve got to get to Mike, like now!” Sam beckoned at us to follow her, which we all did. Leaving someone behind is not an option!
We finally reached the tunnel that connected the lodge with the sanatorium.
Apparently the stranger contained multiple Wendigo’s inside the sanatorium, which is why Sam became very worried about Mike. We had to warn him of the possible danger that laid ahead of him!
“Come on guys! Hurry up! We gotta find Mike. Come on!” She told us impatiently, while keeping up her fast pace.
Unfortunately not everyone was in good shape. “Hey… ahhh… I’m kinda gimping out here guys… I think maybe you should go on without me.” Chris groaned when he came to a stop.
“You can’t be serious right now?!” rolling your eyes at his statement. How could he possibly think about staying behind on his own when he’s injured?!
“No. Chris. We are not leaving you. We’re sticking together. Mike will just have to wait.” Ashley declared to Chris. You absolutely agreed.
“Come on Chris! We are NOT splitting up! It’s too dangerous.” You added. He didn’t even try to argue about it anymore.
With Chris back on board we headed towards the entrance of the sanatorium. It was a metal double door with no noticeable lock. Sam tried opening the door, but with no luck. It seemed to be locked from the other side. Of course…
“Oh shit. Mike must have locked it behind him. Crap! There’s gotta be another way in.” Sam frantically looked around to find another way in.
You took a shot at trying to force it open, but no luck either. “Fuck!!” you shouted out of frustration.
“Wait, hey! What about this?” Ashley questioned. You looked over to see what she was talking about. It was a sewer grate. ‘Perfect!’ you cheered to yourself.
“This could work.” You exclaimed after examining it.
Sam seemed to agree. “Well it’s not like we got a whole lot of choices here…”
With a pipe found nearby Ashley was able to pull off the grate and together with Sam she opened it up. With your flashlight you looked inside. It didn’t seem like a deep descend.
“So who’s going first?” Sam asked to the group. Everyone seemed hesitant, mostly because we didn’t know what was possibly down there.
Someone had to go first, and we also needed someone to put the grate back. Just in case.
Enter first / Go last
Enter first
For once, maybe you should have a bit more courage.
“I’ll go” You said determined. Nobody wanted to disagree.
“After you.” Emily voiced sarcastically. Not that it bothered you.
After positioning yourself on the steps you started your descend into the sewer-like tunnel. Fortunately the steps didn’t have a lot of rust, so you didn’t have to worry about hurting yourself. Lucky me.
Once down you looked around with your flashlight a couple of times. Everything seemed to be clear. No signs of any monsters, so you gave the group a signal. Soon the others followed after you, except for Ashley since she was going to close the grate opening.
“Shouldn’t we wait for her?” you asked Sam, but she dismissed you quickly.
“It’s fine, she’ll catch up.” Her pace not slowing down.
Leaving her behind worried you a bit, though you dismissed the thought quickly. Closing the grate opening wasn’t going to take that long anyway. Besides, Chris was being slow, due to his injury, so Ashley could easily catch up with him. You were probably worried over nothing.
And as always you didn’t have to be so paranoid. As soon as the group reached the end of the sewer tunnel, you saw Ashley and Chris catching up together.
We reached a clearing which looked like a part of a mine. It seemed like a dead end. The only way to go forward was to climb up the rocky slope to reach the wooden structure, which in itself looks like a challenge.
“Look. The ladder’s toast we’re never going to make it up there!” Ashley said defeated.
But Sam disagreed with her. “No no no, I think I can… I think I can do it. It’s like… a rock wall.” She started to examine it. “I’m gonna keep going! You should head back to the lodge I’ve gotta get Mike.”
Baffled by her words you stopped her “You can’t seriously think of going all by yourself are you??”
Sam stopped for a minute. “I have experience with rock climbing, you guys don’t. It’s safer if I go by myself.” She explained to you.
Go with her / Stay with the group
Go with her
“I’m not letting you do this on your own! At least let me come with you.” You tried to convince her.
She didn’t look convinced “But-“
You immediately reassured her “I’ll be fine. I’ve done rock climbing a few times in middle school and not to brag I wasn’t that bad.” A grin appeared on your face.
Sam let out a sigh “Are you sure?”.
You didn’t hesitate a second “Yes”
The two of you began your climb together.
“Good luck!” Ashley shouted before the group headed back to the safe space.
(Your relationship with Sam increased)
Chapter 6
Stay with the group
Sam was right. You may have done some rock climbing in middle school, but those were easy as fuck. Here you had actual rocks that may fall off and you could get seriously injured if you made even a tiny mistake. Besides, you would only slow Sam down.
You stepped towards Sam to give her some encouraging words. “Good luck Sam… Make sure you come back alive.” You looked her in the eyes, but there was no fear in them.
She hesitated for a second, but then grabbed you and pulled you into a hug. It was a bit awkward yet comforting. You hugged her back.
“Keep the others.. and yourself safe-” she pulled away from you. “and I’ll come back alive with Mike.” She sounded so confident, you had no choice but to believe her words.
You nodded at her and headed back towards the group. “Let’s go..”
You looked back one last time. Sam was already climbing up to her next destination. You continued to walk quite slowly until you couldn’t see her anymore. ‘See you soon’ you thought to yourself, only you weren’t sure if there was going to be a soon. You could only hope so.
Chapter 6
Go last
It might be a good idea to play it a bit more smart. So you waited until Sam volunteered to go first.
Something came to mind once Chris started to climb down. “Shouldn’t we close the grate? I mean, just in case you know?” You asked Ashley.
She thought a bit until she spoke up. “Yeah, you’re right. That way nobody can follow us.”
You nodded at her words. “I’ll go last, so I’ll be the one to close it.” You told her. She seemed okay with it.
Once Chris reached the bottom Ashley began to go down the steps.
“Guys, hurry up! We gotta get to Mike!” Sam shouted from the bottom.
“You guys go ahead, I’m going to close this grate once it is my turn to go down!” You answered her.
She looked impatient. “Yes, fine. Close it. But we gotta keep moving. Can you just catch up? Please?” Sam asked a bit annoyed.
You muttered a “Yeah, yeah..” to answer her, not even sure if she heard you. Once Ashley reached the ground you started to position yourself on the steps and began to climb down until you were right below the grate opening. With one hand you dragged the grate over your head into it’s former location. It took a minute because it was quite heavy, and you definitely didn’t work out your arms enough to easily do it. You started to climb down again. Once your feet found the ground you looked around to see were the others were. They were already gone. It made you a bit afraid to be all alone, but you soon dismissed the fear. There was no time. Besides, they couldn’t have gone that far, could they? You started walking down the underpass towards your groups location. After walking for a bit you suddenly heard a cry for help.
“Hello?” You asked, wondering if you really just heard that. It sounded like… Josh?
You heard the desperate cry again. It really was Josh’s voice!

Investigate
You went inside the opening were you heard Josh’s voice coming from. The shaft was a bit narrow, but eventually you reached a whole other section. Suddenly you heard some banging. It freaked you out. You went towards the sound and saw a trap door being violently banged on from below.
You swallowed to get rid of a lump in your troat. “J-Josh?” you croaked softly.
The banging suddenly stopped. Your heart was beating horribly fast due to fear. What if it was really him? You hesitantly reached to the lock on the trap door to open it. Cold sweat was rolling down your face. You unlocked it and slowly opened the door.
“Josh? You there?” you whispered.
But it wasn’t Josh that came out, it was a Wendigo. You let out a bloodcurdling scream that you didn’t even know came from you. The thing grabbed your neck and started twisting it, which hurt like hell. You barely had any time to struggle. But soon you didn’t feel anything anymore since the Wendigo broke your neck and pulled it off of your body. With your nerves still active you saw its face sneering at you until all vision faded from you.
You are dead.
Join group
It seems unwise to investigate this on your own. You quickened your pace towards your destination. Then you finally saw them.
“Guys-“ you said out of breath. “I heard Josh!”
Sam couldn’t believe her ears “You heard Josh? How? Where?” she questioned you.
You beckoned at them to follow you back. “Over here!”
Everyone came along to see what you were talking about. You reached the spot where you first heard his voice, but you couldn’t hear anything anymore.
“I swear I heard his voice right here!” you rambled in frustration.
They tried listening as well, but were sceptical.
“Um, are you sure you really even heard him? Like, wasn’t it your imagination or something?” Emily asked annoyed.
Even Chris was unconvinced. “Yeah (Y/N), maybe the fear is getting to you…”
You shook your head. “NO! I’m sure I heard him guys! Why would I make this up?!” you shouted at them.
Sam came in-between. “Hey hey. Nobody is angry, okay.” She reassured you. “Maybe it really was your imagination playing tricks on you or something entirely different.”
“But-“ you were cut off.
“(Y/N), it may have been a Wendigo…” Sam whispered to you.
You were baffled by her words. “What do you mean?” you asked her in a low voice.
Sam sighed and closed her eyes for a second. “I read in the strangers journal that Wendigo’s can mimic human voices…”
You couldn’t believe it. “So you are telling me that a Wendigo was trying to lure me into a trap? By using Josh’s voice?” you tried to make sense of her words.
She hesitated for a second “…Yes…” she eventually said.
Your knees felt weak. ‘I could have been dead’ was the only thing going through your mind right now. Sam looked sympathetic and stroked your arm a bit to make you feel a bit better. The others started to feel worried, so Sam started to walk back to our destination.
“She made a mistake. It was probably something else. Let’s go!” She said towards the others.
You collected your thoughts and went in the direction everyone was heading. From now on you needed to be way more careful than you previously thought.
