Me taking a deep breath
Vergil is such an interesting character because on the surface level you would think he’s an absolute asshole: bullying Dante and almost killing him, summoning the temin ni gru to open the portal to hell, summoning the quipoth tree and opening the gate to hell yet again, abandoning his son but also cutting his son’s arm off, and pretty much chase his desire for power to the pits of hell.
but like, there’s so much /more/ when you think about why he does things the way he does, like:
he bullies and fights Dante because he saw Dante as irrelevant, but also it’s a form of “I care about you so I don’t want you in my way” thing, but because he’s selfish he doesn’t see that there are consequences for his actions and he cannot do everything by himself even if he wills for him to be the only son to become ruler of hell (and even then? His uncle just ends up manipulating him into a brainwashed puppet)
Both Dante and Vergil grew up not normal kids because their mother and father actively had to flee each time the demons found them, often times creating a strained relationship between the twins and their dad (who has yet to come back from hell so we don’t even know if he’s still alive at all), causing Vergil to have this hyper fixation on power ESPECIALLY after thinking his mother abandoned him for Dante when the demons finally burned their house down + killed their mother, and left Dante since he saw him as weak + unable to protect anyone (projecting his own sense of human weakness on Dante)
somehow had a kid in between every shitstorm happening, and abandoning his kid because his obsession for power after losing another person he loved made him even more obsessive with it
Having no normalcy meaning that what Vergil thought was normal (chasing his father’s power in order to become stronger to the point it was Sheer Obsession) isn’t normal at all and that he willingly jumped off the demon tower and fought his uncle demon king in a losing battle that ended up royally destroying his brain and being reduced to a demon puppet shell of his former self
Even when Dante defeated him and freed him from Mundus he literally Could Not Stop his chase for power (more notably his human self was starting to crumble after this point)
He cut Nero’s Devil Bringer off in order to obtain his Yamato sword again BUT because his human self knew he wasn’t going to survive because his demon side was becoming more and more powerful, and splits himself in two (V and Urizen) in order for his human half to survive and stop Urizen because his human self knows that this isn’t want he wants and he wants to /live/ and not die off
and once fused together again into Vergil he tries to fight Dante again but then Nero confronts him and it’s a Family Moment where both Vergil and Dante leave to seal the hell pit- except Vergil gives Nero his book, implying that he’ll come back for it instead of “abandoning” his son again
*exhales*
I think he’s very neat
normal people: cham why do you enjoy Vergil so much as a character he’s such an asshole
