cdn historian’s continued assertion that riel was insane (and therefore his actions were wrong) is… insane. because if u were 24 and actively seeing the horrors of colonialism unfold upon your homeland and you were doing everything to protect your people but there were threats being made on you literally every day from everyone from your neighbour to the fucking prime minister and ultimately you are unable to effectively stand in the way of the ceaseless march of imperialism you would probably be insane too. and anyways it’s not really any doubt that riel was mentally ill but that doesn’t mean his actions were lesser for it. i don’t care if he thought he was a prophet that god spoke through he was literally right about everything he did. sorry i am doing my weekly reading of my métis history book

Playing SOMA really highlighted how fucking terrified Nick Valentine must have been the first time he saw his reflection or noticed that he doesn't have a heartbeat or isn't breathing.

He's literally going through almost the same exact thing as Simon Jarrett

(though I think it's pretty safe to say that Simon has it far far worse. Nick woke up in the Commonwealth (a nightmare to wake up in but a liveable place) with the mind and skills of a grizzled detective to help him survive. Simon woke up in Pathos-II (infinitely worse place to be) with the mind and skills of a depressed, brain damaged 20-something-yr-old who works at a book store and was then subjected to Horrors Beyond His Comprehension)

Anyway SOMA terrified me on an existential level and I now sympathize way more with Valentine's imposter syndrome stuff and that first holotape of him waking up with DiMA and being confused and upset and angry because can you imagine the whiplash?

He closed his eyes for a second while they took a scan in 2077, then instantly he was in the 2100s in a sterile white room, with a face made of plastic, bones made of metal, glowing yellow eyes, and a guy ALSO made of metal calling himself his brother.

Then just as suddenly he wakes up alone in the Commonwealth and just has to figure it out from there.

Like I always knew that must have been a terrible experience but now I've vicariously lived through it in a different game it REALLY hits me how monumentally, monstrously fucking _nightmarish_ Nick's transition into his new life was.
