why I like them

oh god where do i even start. katara just contains so many multitudes - she's sweet and feminine and caring and attentive but she's never reduced to just that, she's never just 'the girl', she's also allowed to get mad, to be petty, to laugh at her brother, to be headstrong and stubborn, to express vulnerability, to cry and to laugh, to make ridiculous facial expressions and *be* very expressive. she's dealing with a lot of trauma not simply from the loss of her mother but that loss represents also how her tribe have been decimated by the fire nation, how she's the last waterbender, how all this pressure exists on her shoulders (but also pride, but also determination, to bring it back) and that is expressed subtly throughout the series with the same depth and love that male characters are afforded with regard to their respective traumatic experiences. and despite all this she never tries to stop making the world good? She's always pushing for change, she's always wanting to make things better, she's relentless and doesn't give up when it comes to her vision for a better world... she has such a big heart. and that coexists with a deep anger in her, and deep hurt. Not to make an ocean metaphor so early on but she's as deadly and deep as the ocean but she chooses to be kind and warm and that's so powerful.

why i don't

honnestly while katara's instincts to mother people are a sad symptom of how she was forced to grow up to soon and automaically asigns herself a role of emotional responsibility she has mixed feelings about, i know that if katara tried to mother me, i would be annoyed. but that sounds more like a me problem.

favourite episode

oh it's either the episode where she beats the fucking shit out of pakku or it's the southern raiders. the first one because it's so gratifying to see how she's grown and developed as a bender and really come into her own. the second because... god i love how *messy* the southern raiders is, and it really taps into what i love about katara - she's flawed, she runs off on an ill-thought out revenge mission with zuko, she's got a great capability for darkness as she quite seriously considers murdering a man she has every right to loathe and to kill - but she chooses against it, in the end. it would not be right for her, if not him. she chooses what's right for her in the end.

favourite season

I'm gonna be a wee bit controversial and say book 1 had the best conception of katara's arc from student to master and really saw her grow and flourish, from someone yelling at her brother' oafish prejudice to a real master, that really solidified her as an idealist and presented that as the strength that is, that showed her struggling with petty jealousy of aang's progress and had her stumble in ways that made her character comeplling and interesting - like what an introduction to her character! book 2 had some fantastic moments but i can't think of anything particularly remarkable about hee character arc - largely because it tied into aang's romantic arc i think at this point. book 3 had some absolutely fantastic moments (scam queens katara and toph!! painted lady!! southern raiders!! the final agni kai) that really shone but also book 3 lays a lot of groundwork for fanon i hate (e.g. katara as the mom friend - wish that headcanon would die tbh)

favourite line

fuck there's a lot of good ones but my underrated fave is when sokka says he's kissed a girl before but she's never met her and katara says 'Who? Gran-gran? I've met gran-gran' and it's bruuutaaall

but my favourite serious line is 'I will never ever give up on people who need me'. powerful.

water tribe anything!! and i actually think her book one/book two braids are her best hair. underrated katara hair. personally she looks just adorable in her parka in the flashback to when she was like. eight.

there's some ships i like in AU situations - yuetara is actually one i lov, especially with waterbender yue, i just love the whole sea/moon thing as well as katara and yue rebelling in loud/quiet ways, being girlfriends who refuse to have their lives defined by the expectations of older men, who have a great sense of duty towards their nations and won’t let gendered expectations stop them.

and most of you know i like the messy drama of katara/azula in a lighter AU situation where they're like, school or academic rivals, and the legacy of imperialism isn’t quite so personal (and azula makes better choices, obviously), but it’s not as much as i “ship” them as i just find the potential dynamic interesting, they’re both driven by a sense of duty for their home, it’s just that means *very* different things depending if you’re SWT or FN.

none of them are OTPs though - they’re more just fun thought experiments

katara & sokka - absolutely love their sibling dynamic its amazing. both have been impacted negatively by the shit in their lives and are not always dealing with it in functional ways but theyre there for each other, through thick and thin, always have each other's backs, they roast each other and bicker and sometimes make stupid decisions and sometimes lash out but at the end of the day their love pulls through, they’re able to work past those conflicts.

katara & aang - honestly while i feel kataang was just so poorly executed in the show (listen guys I just can’t after ember island players, i know that was a bad episode, but i can’t) & i cant imagine katara wanting to leave the south pole after the war for long spells (it would have to be long distance love, lots of profound and heartfelt letters and occasional visits, if anything, but i dont know if that’s what katara wants or needs? so maybe it wouldn’t pan out?), but regardless, i really do think these two had a life-changing friendship where each really represented hope for each other, that's at the core of it, they both truly believe in each other, and inspired each other. katara & aang good.

oh oh OH i also think that katara, while primarily a combat bender during the war, actually takes to healing a lot more after the show and gets proper healing training at some point with the help of a trained medical expert and maybe yugoda. tbh i feel like the show was a bit dismissive of healing as an ability - i feel like having that is *extremely* useful in any combat situation, you always have a medic on hand - but i understand why katara, who wanted to be recognised as powerful regardless of her gender, and wanted to hold herself in a fight alongside sokka & aang, pushed for combat waterbending training because that is what 'powerful' looks like to her in the moment. obviously katara is capable of incredible healing feats (see: saving aang) but i think given we see her as a healer in lok (not a decision i necessarily disagree with) would mean a shift in focus. i think katara actually comes to realise she likes healing a great deal, but really she excels in all aspects of waterbending and is the south’s most respected master who helped rejuvenate southern style waterbending

unpopular opinion

the main reason people think katara is straight is because we see her have very few meaningful interactions with other girls outside of toph. ATLA as a show is a bit romance obsessed, and very heteronormative in that regard, and so interactions with minor characters almost always line up with a potential crush for sokka or katara, and later, zuko (suki, haru, jet, yue, song, jin....). we rarely see katara build friendships with other girls and it’s such a damn shame.

a wish

the version of the puppetmaster we saw was actually fire nation propaganda, i feel like katara would have felt deep compassion for a prisoner of war and after maybe some clashes, would have agreed to help smuggle her out of the fire nation and secure passage home for hama, and tried to assure her that she still has a place there. the treatment of hama in that episode was awful (but also hama was written to be almost cartoonishly evil, very much an evil witch in her cottage in the spooky woods? like the whole horror movie / spooky story opening was such a big tell) and tbh i reject the thesis that we saw ‘katara’s dark potential’ in that episode completely, or that bloodbending as a power is inherently dark, or katara’s use of it to stop hama ‘corrupted’ her. I feel like katara might feel this way as a teenager perhaps but with time (she can be a little black and white at times), and especially with more training as a healer, i think she might realise that’s not the case, she’ll realise that she was right to try and oppose hama, her elder (she was lashing out rather than really trying to oppose the fire nation), and it wasn’t a betrayal of her or her beliefs, but also her use of bloodbending wasn’t wrong or evil inherently at all? and maybe she’d find ways to use it for healing purposes? anyway my wish is that, i like the idea that they meet again, speak about their differences, reconcile a little / come to an understanding, and katara learns more from hama again

I hope your hiatus goes well! As for a more interesting ask tho, if you could have any bird in the world be your pet(with no limitations, like u could fulfill all their needs and everything), what kind of bird would you choose?

Man that is such a controversial topic for me XD Because I’m very firm in the sense that raptors and sort shouldn’t be in captivity beyond conservation purposes (and falconry for conservation) and if they are, they should be given maximum range - and for parrots that are in mass bred in environments not suited for them and its a large issue that we’ve kind of dug a whole into, so parrots shouldn’t be pets, but if you have to they should be companions with almost the entire time out of the cage so like XD

I have a reactive response to birds as pets but the theoretical “could fufill all their needs and everything” does cover some of that - though I also would still have to sit and question if the dynamic between a human and a wild bird could ever simultaneously exist with having all their needs fufilled so I’m sitting here rubbing my chin as a overly complicate an otherwise relatively simple question.

In leu of the honor of the original question and what I get the intent to be (aka, if there was ABSOLUTELY no issues and it was 100% possible to maintain both a human-bird bond with said animal while having their full life) it would probably be a toss up between a Harpy Eagle, Barn Owl, Secretary Bird, and California Condor.... maybe a penguin or cormorant if I had a really nice water bed. OR A RAVEN SINCE THEY BRING SHINIES BACK. It really would be a different answer to who you ask in the system though. I probably would go uh.... I actually really don’t know. I might actually go Snowy Owl..? Maybe? Aesthetically I’d go Secretary Bird but personality wise I’d like a Raven hmmm

I really can’t put a finger on a favorite bird. Raven I feel would probably be the easiest to both have a fully wild and free relationship with but also an individual bond that would be enjoyable, but I dunno. Its really hard of a question to answer

As for the more technical - I would probably take the question and warp it to the alternative loop hole question of - hey, you are saying I could provide for an animal’s needs entirely?

I would take in the honest to god most torn up - feather plucking - self mutilating - anxious depressed bird; probably a cockatoo breed, and take it in.

I actually have a habit of trying to take in really anxious, sad, or mistreated cockatiels in and trying to bring them up and let them behaviorally adjust to people and other birds a lot and its actually a dream goal to help parrots get a renewal on life since some live just as long as we do, but often are much much much more neglected throughout their entire life as dependents.

Like I can go on and on about it, but a lot of the longer living birds (cockatoos, african greys, etc) can be bred for money, bought for aesthetic, and treated poorly, abandoned or put for adoption and bounce from home to home to home that was not prepared for them and getting so many behavioral issues and “bird mental health” issues as I put simply and some really just dont get the chance to have a happy life. Some have a good owner until they are 30, then their owner dies and their owner’s family doesn’t want to care for them so they are sold or abandoned or put up for adoption and after living a great life are put into the cycles others do so like

One of my dreams if I ever get the money would be to legitimately have an Aviary and / or be a part of a parrot rehabilitation and rescue center XD I was actually up front with my fiance when I started dating that my future with caring for birds and adopting / fostering ones in need is something he would have to accept as my package / baggage or I will not under any circumstances proceed with a relationship XD

But like, since I’m part ways on this tangent, lemme share one of my princesses that I’ve been caring for. (Quick photo below the keep reading)

We got her from a previous owner that really couldn’t care for her and named her “Crash” because she kept crashing every time she flew (which is btw very dangerous - even if I noticed she seemed to learn how to “crash safely) and I really didn’t find the name cute cause it clearly was an issue - so I renamed her to Avery Rose - Avery being like Ivory + Avian and Rose cause I like Rose; but she also was REALLY terrified of hands and people and if a hand was within like 2 feet of her she’d panic - fly (or try to) and crash - and if you got her she’d bite like, right through your hand. I figure (vet wasn’t sure and didn’t want to do unnecessary invasive procedures to be sure) that she either has some joint / motor issue that makes it hard to fly or she has poor vision that makes her anxious.

She also would pluck a lot out of stress and anxiety and isolation and stuff cause cockatiels are social birds and they need a lot of stimulus form their owner and/or other birds. She ALSO really didn’t get along with other birds either and would pretty much kinda avoid them. Even until today she kinda seems to miss the social cues of the other birds or not meld in since like, most birds get excited when small treats or “cookies” are brought over and they start pacing and heading to the food dishes, but she just kinda like.... waits or shows no interest XD

She’s a really unique personality. But anyways, my mom took her in originally and uh... as a typically kind of neglectful mom does, just kinda found her “too difficult” and just gave up on her, and I saw that and was like OH HELL NAH JUST CAUSE SHES REALLY ANXIOUS, SOCIALLY ABNORMAL, BITES HARD AND CRASHES DOES NOT MEAN YOU GET TO ABANDON HER so despite technically not signing up for it I was like “Mom she’s mine and I am taking over her care what you are doing is kind of cruel”

And like, one of the flock members we have is the son of my first cockatiel who I helped raise (aside from his parents who primarily raised him) and socialized as he is now a bit of my personal emotional support birb, but with insistent help from me and I’m guessing bird support from a slightly younger and annoying boy birb that really liked her, she actually managed to learn out to fly REALLY well (like my boy, my son here literally like, kept doing small loops around and following her around until she got it and literally repetitively flew up and down to help her figure out how to land it melted my heart) and she actually really likes me specifically holding her and coddling her or hugging her, which I think might be because it might give her security.

She still plucks as it is one of those things that can follow a bird for life (though its getting better) and she is still anxious and really odd in social behaviors to the other birds, but she really seems to function in a happy life and she has a bird partner and a human mother and unlike before she can fly like any other bird and crashes rarely ever and like

She’s one of the things that I am most proud of seeing and lights up my world and I am SO god damn proud of her and she has LOWKEY been an inspiration for my recovery sometimes cause GOD do I love her XD

Her and her partner / “my boy / son” are the two birds that follow me to and from college and they seem to actually like car trips now? XD But they are my roommates and I love them immensely ;w;

hey, i really liked your posts about ep12, it helped me a lot to put things into perspective. i was wondering if you could share your thoughts on the 2gether finale as well, coz right now i just wanna cry im so disappointed with it =(

Ok so my thoughts on the finale are kind of all over the place but I’ll try to explain as best as I can and hopefully it’s gonna make sense.

Like I said, in my original post I dont love the ep but I dont hate it either. I suppose I fall somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed a lot of it - seeing all the couples progress and be happy together, Man/Type especially were just so adorable, Mil and Phukong starting to build something with each other (lil bro using Sarawat’s pick up line was a really nice touch, love that), Mil being an all around awesome supportive friend to BOTH Tine and Wat?? We love to see it. The way he turned up at the football field where Wat was being his angsty self and literally kicked his butt into taking action - *chef’s kiss*

Him and Fong are now the parents of the baby gays I dont make the rules.

Wat’s confession on stage and his song that he literally named after Tine and when he said he never confessed to Pam because he didnt know what love was before he met Tine - perfection. Absolute perfection. I’m here for it.

And Tine’s heartbreak was so well done too, I just felt so much for him.

Again, as I said, the whole thing with Pam didnt turned out exactly as I had hoped but it wasnt the worst case scenario either so I’ll take it. I’d rather have Pam making a mistake and realising it and backing off while assuring Tine that Wat really does love HIM and even though she tried Pam didnt stand a chance because it’s always gonna be Tine for Sarawat and she understands that now over her being an actual bitch who keeps trying to seperate them and uses the situation to her advantage. I mean they could have gone that way too - Pam didnt have to give Tine that recording or to tell him how Wat changed after meeting him but she did, I think, as her own way of apologizing for what she’d done. So yeah, overall, I’m fine with this.

ALSO NOBODY DIED SO THAT’S A BIG PLUS.

ANYWAY, so those are the positives for me. Which as it turns out is most of the episode yay! Now onto what wasnt quite so positive.

My main issue with this episode is the resolution to Wat and Tine’s conflict. Mainly, there really... wasnt one. And I’m not talking about the physical intimacy thing, I’ll touch on that later but more importantly for the ending - the emotional intimacy. None of the problems they had were properly addressed. Tine’s insecurities were rooted so deeply that despite Wat spending 12 EPISODES doing anything and everything to show his love and adoration, Tine still couldnt really believe it. And that’s not gonna be resolved with a simple recording.

And on the other hand, can you image how all of this would make Sarawat feel? Like no matter what he does, no matter how much of himself he gives to Tine, his boyfriend still would find it easier to believe that Wat is just using him as a replacement for someone else. That’s gonna fuck with his head even if Tine came back. I really really wished they had talked at least a little about these things.

Like maybe if we didnt have half of the episode filled with pointless flashbacks there could have been time to actually talk... (tbh, part of me kind of wonders if they purposefully put in so many flashbacks to fill in the air time so they wouldnt HAVE to write those scenes which leaves me ?????).

I think I mentioned this too in the other post, but the Wat/Tine reunion echoes beat for beat the Fighter/Tutor reunion with all its issues but while WhyRU has a reason for why things turned out like that, here I just... I dont know what could have been the reason for 2gether’s writers? Unless they also couldnt film everything they wanted...

And then there’s the... “high-five controversy”, let’s call it and again I find myself in the middle of the argument. I stand by what I’ve said before about how I feel about the way they handled physical intimacy between the characters - yes, objectively and critically speaking, I’m not here for writers/directors/channel/whoever trying to censor the physical intimacy of an established couple. There is nothing wrong with two partners wanting to kiss/cuddle/have sex/etc. Sex isnt something dirty (I mean it can be depending on what you’re writing BUT THAT’S A DIFFERENT GENRE OK, we are not talking about smutty fic here cough cough) and shameful that “pure” people shouldnt be enjoying (lovely post on the topic here I was just thinking about it last night). And it’s about time show creators got with the programme, ESPECIALLY when it comes to non-straight couples.

As of ep13 it’s clear to me that 2gether went through some serious censorship - lots of people have talked about how it’s a thing that they do on this particular channel and maybe that’s all it is, I dont know. I dont want to speculate what’s been going on behind the scenes since I dont have any idea and sadly I dont think the writers will ever be willing to talk about it. I’d LOVE to hear their throughts on this matter tbh and why they decided to do things this way.

So on an objective level, this is bullshit. Subjectively, and this is where my personal opinion comes in, I wasnt as bothered by this as I normally would be because I’ve been enjoying all the other aspects of the relationship that the show successfully built up and prtrayed on screen. Does that make sense?

Specifically about the finale, though, I agree with the complains. Part of why the reunion felt so underwhelming and disappointing, I think, was not only the lack of emotional intimacy but also the hella.... awkward? physical “intimacy” they showed? The scene absolutely did call for a kiss or a hug, at the very least. Instead they were standing 2 feet apart cause... they’re not gay? I really really do not understand what happened there in that scene. I’ve seen some people mention that the finale was filmed before the other episodes so the actors werent used to each other yet and honestly I can see it - watching Tine and Wat in that ending montage felt like I was watching them at the beginning of their fake dating when both were awkward and unsure of where they stood with each other rather than seeing an established in love couple coming back together after going through something tough.

So these are my thoughts on the finale. It wasnt the best one I’ve ever seen but not bad enough to ruin the rest of the show for me (and there’s NOTHING I hate more than bad endings ruining a story I’ve fallen in love with so there’s that) and I do really love this show and its characters so much. It’s hard, even impossivle to find a perfect show from start to finish and honestly I’ve come to believe that’s not as important as what you get out of it - if the show makes you happy, despite whatever writing issues it might have, that’s the most important thing, I think. And 2gether did that for me. So I’m glad I watched it.

Just finished watching dts season 2,and yeah not that suprise since I've seen spoilers from twitter,tumblr and instagram :p Well,a lot of opinion whether its pro and con,but here's my thought about the season 2 of dts: - I think its better if the race pictured in choronological order,so dont get the confusion for new fans or even making wrong assumption -lando,kimi,daniil and antonio not being potrayed is not a good move to attrack new fans,bcs lando is the social media king,kimi is the ferrari world champion,daniil has the same situation like pierre did and he get the podium in germany gp,and antonio is the only italian driver ever since 2011 which quite ironic as ferrari is the big italian team in f1 for a long time but didnt get italian driver. -dan and carlos rivalries is lame -I need more seb scenes -im so happy seb and charles talking about their favorite music instead of those teammate drama -seb 'winning' in canada is doesnt potrayed,I think liberty media is too scared to show how controversial it is -no charlie whiting's tribute as he is the important role in f1 is so pity -happy for pierre and carlos brazil moments - there are some scenes that I feel sorry for teams or drivers for what media did to them,like asking silly question just like the 'famous question' to toto wolff,or private talks happen in haas team between gunther and his drivers (romain,kevin) -I still feel goosebumps for some scenes which is good To sum up, watching drive to survive is like having a love-hate relationship,which you feel happy because seeing not only actions on the track but you feel sorry that the series exposed stuff that shouldn't be or even creating irrelevant stories to the real facts. I really wanted netflix to do the motogp series for the sake of getting new fans but after seeing dts 2 and what they did to f1 teams and drivers,i'll be the frontliner to resist it for the sake of motogp teams and drivers bcs I love them,although I know motogp deserve exposures because of their last lap race moments, and drama?try to watch 2015 season or valencia 2006 or 2007 or yamaha having wall to separate vale and jorge,but no. I prefer motogp social media teams getting more creative just like f1 social media teams. Anyway,I still appreciate what netflix do bcs I can still be happy see dan and seb all over again while waiting the season start after those canceled races (especially for motogp).

ok i find it extremely funny that first aid was demoted from doctor to nurse, as if that's a thing that happens EVER - I mean it'd be one thing if first aid was a nurse practitioner (which i doubt is a position that exists here), at least that demotion would make sense, but like...the doctors i work with don't know how to do most nurse stuff (like BP, cathing, vaccinations, hell even using some of the thermometers - that's all stuff nurses/etc do), so demoting one to a nurse would be a disaster (just like promoting a really good nurse to a doctor would be a bad idea). anyways i know I'm being pedantic but it Be like that when you work in the medical field and read something that has medicine-related stuff in it

another important facet of pharma’s character becomes clear around this time as well - how he’s really into ratchet. i also choose to read them as awful exes tbh, it makes their dynamic even more entertaining

and that wraps up the delphi arc! our first true ‘arc’ of mtmte, and a fantastic one at that. short and snappy and fresh, with some very clever writing and cool new characters, and a lot of great plot threads to be picked up later. plus, we got to see the beginnings of drift and ratchet’s whole thing (and ratchet and pharmas whole thing). and the lost light gets some much needed extra medical staff, so everyone wins!

well, we’ll see how fort max feels about this all pretty soon.....

2: i think more ppl with my sense of humor should watch Spider Riders bc listen.. if somewhere along the line that show suddenly gained more popularity again in this fine year of 2019 id be both actually funny for once but also revolutionary. by all technicalities some of my hcs are fucking great but i dont think i could say a lot of them and even be comprehensible outside of orientation based ones that are just rlly controversial. granted im not even sure i could or would actually recommend the show to people cause its kinda dumb a lot of the time and also fairly long at least to my standards so its harder to finish unless ur like really invested in it :pensive:

3: also on that note the next time a horny person even THINKS about Corona im Going to break into their home and then break their knees. i hate that she has so much fanart thats basically just fetish art or otherwise managing to be nsfw in some way shes like 15 at best fuck off!! its rlly only a problem on like. deviantart but it still makes me die inside.

4: character development is hard i never actually keep my ideas and what i have written down on like. my actual bios for everyone on the same pace so its a confusing mess and i wish i was better at combating that

6: alex is the best sdv bachelor and im not accepting criticism on that notion. 2nd best would probably be like.. sam except i havent tried hard enough to be friends with him yet which i feel bad abt bc he seems nice

8: (goes BACK to thinking about SR shdfjds) the anime had no right having like so many characters base their ideals off of how brade used to be in the past and all those good takes on like not necessarily Having to resort to violence as the ultimate solution and all that good stuff just to be like, “surprise!! he actually IS still around! but also he’s going to be minimally helpful at all until the last few episodes and otherwise we’re going to make a ton of gags about him trying to hit on the like 2 girls in the team who are also like 15 while he ignores practically everyone else because thats funny!” im still so mad about it. he is the absolute worst and he has no rights. there was also so much potential they seemed like they could have used and were trying to hint at using in terms of further developing more important details about the history of the inner world or at least some of the things that had been going on well before hunter ever showed up and then they didn’t do anything but hint at the idea of brade having known hunter’s grandfather. but even that wasn’t 100% confirmed bc they dodged around it the one time they had hunter ask. its a mess.

9: my taste is so fucking weird and i hate it bc its mostly just, “oh yeah i heard abt this thing and it seems cool im hoping to start getting into it soon!” for most things that are actually cool or popular or all that and never actually get into it, but then i see smth dumb as shit that i know would probably make me look like an absolute fool for liking and im like, “oh yeah yknow what i can do this one” and then i do like it but i cant say much about it either cause i dont wanna look like. a fool.

10: these have been depressing as fuck so im gonna lighten the mood and say that himbo is a fucking hilarious word and i love it

11: also axel (kh) is a himbo. why? he just is.

12: im also bad at character design i think bc i always worry that my characters look too similar in terms of hair style like all the time and idk if its rlly that bad or not jfhgkf. that and like. so many of my characters just wear jeans and boots in terms of the lower half of their body its so unoriginal but it always works so well…

13: still disappointed in myself for having never 100%’d even 1 tlodw game. lunatic mode.. Difficult

20: i miss when i could be passionate abt cave story it just makes me feel tired seeing it sometimes at this point but it also still holds a great significance to me so its just confusing and im not sure how i feel abt it

21: the SR novels were cowards only on account of not giving us any official design for petra but also for writing igneous like. That. novelverse igneous is just too bitter in general and like i get it but they couldve done a lot more with him even though he is still somewhat respectable in the end, granted its hard cause like holy shit hes so fucking mean to hunter literally who asked for that. im just glad the anime let him be somewhat more idk.. i guess sociable while still keeping a lot of the inherently essential aspects his personality had like his almost over the top loyalty to the prince and taking things like training/combat in general very seriously. its just good and animeverse igneous is so good id die for him thanks for coming to my tedtalk

AHHH i love royal aus so expect this to be;; long and detailed;; because i also stan minki,,, and he is already a prince,, coming up with a plot for this wasnt hard lmfaoooo;; i got my big ass 2litre bottle of water ready its 1am and its WRITING TIME

Ren was born into the royal family of a small country in East Asia

He was originally second in line until his brother Minseok gave up his right to the throne so he achieve his dream (that didn't involve being king lmao;;)

So little 8 year-old Minki is now thrust into the spotlight

Up until this point he’s had like;; no training on how to be a King

So he decides when he gets to his twenties he’ll go abroad to study politics and languages and stuff

So he can still be a good king when the time comes;;

But he doesn’t want to be treated like a prince wherever he goes so,, he instead decided to go by his real name rather than his royal name when he’s abroad (which less people know)

(okay it is a thing like prince harry’s name is actually henry FUN FACT)

But he’s super talented like;; he has a way with words and he’s really popular in his country

Because not only is he really beautiful but he’s also amazingly funny with a great personality

Like I mean it when I say he could probably make friends with a brick wall

He’s a little;; weird;; but it just makes him even more loveable sdjhfgjsd

He’s honestly treasured by his country because he just seems like a normal human he doesn’t try to act better than anyone else uh BLESS how kIND

ANYWAY

So the time comes for him to go;; and he chooses on going to your country!! (and your university what a coincidence am i right)

Now you’re just a lowly university student living in a block of flats not far from the campus

And it’s a nice block of flats but you’re on the 8th floor and the lift doesn’t work;; yikes

I mean at least you’re not on the 10th floor right??

So when you see someone moving into the flat next to your with boxes and boxes of stuff you are overcome with pity like;;; yeah you did that once before too

And you muster up the courage to go and help out this guy who is reALLY struggling with his suitcases

He nods a thank you as you pick up one of the suitcases and carry it up the last flight of stairs,, too tired to even speak (i feel u bro)

When you both reach the top he points out which room to take his bags to and guess what

He’s your new neighbour! (yay)

You help him put all the bags in his room and after about 3 minutes of trying to get all his breath back he manages to whisper a ‘thank you’ and offers you some tea

Obviously you take him up on the offer I mean you’re a uni student free sustenance is v good

BUT you have to go back to your room because;; well;; a welcome gift??

All you have in your room that's suitable are like candles and stuff but… don’t get me wrong but this guy doesn’t seem like the biggest fan of candles especially after walking up 8 flights of stairs

So you decide on giving him some of your sweet potatoes and a cute little keyring that your friend gave you that you’ve never used

It’s a little rabbit with a tiara on how ;; cute ;;

When you return to his apartment suddenly the shaggy looking guy who you helped carry his stuff up the stairs is now;; this beautiful man;;

Hes mid-way through making the tea when he notices you’ve returned

And he looks up and flashes you the cutest lil eye smile lol

Oh my god are they the same people even

He finishes making the tea and walks over to shake your hand

‘It's a pleasure to meet you!! I’m Choi Minki~’ he smiles, taking your hand in his

Shfsdhfjgshdjfh his hands are soft what (listen my fave hc is that minki has super super soft hands @ me on this gn)

‘Ahhh hi yes,, i’m y/n and i’m your neighbour!! I got you a present’

His face lights up when he sees the present sdfhdjhf

‘How did you know i love bunnies??’

You both sit down on the sofa in the middle of his flat surrounded by boxes

Drinking your tea and talking about life

You discover he’s attending the same university as you;; studying politics and modern languages

He’s like;; super smart but he doesn’t show it off at all??

But there’s something about his face that seems really familiar

Like as though you’ve seen him before but you don’t know where

So you just assume he reminds you of an old friend or something

As time passes you get really close

You walk with each other everyday to campus and back, you tell each other absolutely everything and you even cook for one another on alternate nights

One night when it was Minki’s turn to cook he was making some food from his home country;; cold spicy noodles (i love those pls omg)

And ahh he is not at all good at cooking but he tries hard so;; let’s let him off yeah

But he concentrates so hard but he genuinely just;; burns everything like idek how he does it don’t let minki cook;;

In the end he just;; gives up so you cook together!!

And as you’re quickly making a batch of pancakes together he decides yeah good time for a food fight

Proceeds to chuck flour all over you

And as he’s laughing at your pain you realise wow okay yeah his laugh is cute oh nOOOO you got a crush on your weird neighbour????

Obviously you ;; don’t make this known and eat your damn pancakes in peace

After chucking flour right back at Minki of course

Over the next few days he just suddenly stops coming into uni because;; he’s in a couple classes with you let’s just say you’re a politics student lol

You try knocking on his apartment door a couple times and nobody replies even when you call his name

You basically put 2 and 2 together

And make 5

And assume that he’s deliberately avoiding you because he realised your crush

In reality there’s been a minor problem in his country;; a law is being passed through government that’s quite controversial to do with like;; minority rights and stuff;; so he’s had to return to fight to get it passed and he didn’t really want to leave without saying anything but;; he also didn’t want to reveal who he was to the whole world

It’s a constitutional monarchy and democracy thing okay pls; i can’t explain political systems;

One night about a week after Minki’s sudden disappearance

You decide to turn on your tv because damn life is boring when you can’t go to Minki’s house and play snap lol

And on the news they’re talking about minki’s country bless where the spicy noodles come from

But the news report tells the story of this brave prince who is attempting to pass a law to protect the rights of the people of his country and wow this prince is a nice guy

And they show a clip of a press conference he held earlier on in the day

And

Wow

Okay

That prince looks suspiciously like your neighbour Minki???

Wait

THAT IS MINKI??!!

Minki = Prince Ren what the ??

Not long after this the law is passed and Minki returns back to his apartment next to yours and oh my god

You see him walking up to the entrance and you freak out again because

You have a crush on a prince???

He didn’t even tell you he was a prince???

What??? Is???? Going????? On??????

He comes and knocks on your door like usual and as you swing open the door he quickly pulls you into a hug

‘y/n!!! I missed you so much!!! I’m sorry for disappearing i had family stuff but I’m back now!!!’

And you just tense up a little because oh god this is a prince who basically lied to you for your friendship so far

‘Hello, Ren.’

Uh oh

You can feel Minki just tense up slightly and pull away from the tight hug

And he kind of just stands there awkwardly looking at the floor wondering what to say next because oh my god how did you find out

‘Y/n, please don’t treat me differently now you know who I am… I wanted to tell you I really did… How did you even find out?’

He looks into your eyes like he’s searching for something because uh oh the girl he’s liked for a while and the only girl who treats him like a normal human being is reallllllly pissed off with him and he,, doesn’t have any idea how to fix it

‘You were on the news, Minki. How long were you going to keep it from me? Were you even planning to tell me at all?’

‘Listen, I was going to but there was never a good time and honestly, I thought you wouldn’t want to be friends with a Prince?’

You just sigh heavily at his answer and go to slam the door in his face but he stops it with his foot and holds on to your wrist tightly

‘Please, y/n, can we talk properly?? I’ll make food.’

You take your hand off the door and stand back to let him into your flat and he immediately heads to the kitchen and pulls out a ramen packet

He starts to cook it all while you sit at the kitchen counter, watching him as he tries desperately to not burn everything sdjhfgsjdgh poor minki

He manages to,, kind of make it (well done minki)

And he places the bowl in front of you and sits down next to you in complete silence like ok this is getting a little awkward

So perk up the mood he just managed to cook without burning the whole block of apartments down

‘So, the prince can cook ramen but nothing else hm?’

He giggles slightly at your comment and nods

‘Yeah my parents always tease me about it too, especially since my brother is amazing at cooking’

He laughs again and picks up his chopsticks to shove in a whole load of ramen

So you finally turn to look at him and you notice his eyes are red and oh my god you made him cry??

Part of you is like yeah but listen he deserves it he lied to you for like 6 months

But then again;; it is understandable that he wouldn’t want everyone knowing he’s a prince

And it doessssss make you feel a little special that he didn’t want your relationship to change at all

You do what your heart tells you to do

And you pat his head and ruffle his hair a little

He looks comPLETELY BAFFLED LIKE,,, WHERE DID THIS COME FROM

But he smiles really wide and giggles again

‘Is this how you show your forgiveness?’

‘No way Minki, I want at least 5 more meals cooked by you before I can get over this’

And omg

He doesn’t get that you’re joking at first

And you just see this look of absolute terror go across his face like

Ohhhh no if he even tries to cook another meal the whole building is going up in flames like

Ramen was hard enough he had to keep checking the packaging every 5 seconds to make sure he was doing it right

Then he realises you’re joking

And he laughs because oh my god

What kind of gullible-

Sooo as time passes from here you get even closer

Some people suspect his identity but you vouch for him and say that ahh no he’s no prince lol i know he’s beautiful but nooo you’re mistaken

And minki is sooo thankful for you and you both just fall in love with each other even more compLETELY OBLIVIOUS TO EACH OTHER’S FEELINGS (idiots)

That is until one evening Minki announces out of the blue that he’s going back to his country

And he wants you to come with him

And you’re leaving tomorrow

He leaves you with a ‘pack quickly~~’

Like wow thanks for the suddenness of this i hAVE TO PACK EVERYTHING IN LIKE 3 HOURS

But you manage;; somehow

And you get on the flight and Minki is so damn nervous for some reason

Like is he scared of flying??

What??

So you hold his hand during the take off and landing just in case lol

Minki would never admit it but that made his heart race even more

As soon as you land he takes you straight to the palace and walks you into this big ballroom and asks the servants to call for his parents

And you just assume like ok yeah

He’s just introducing me to them as his friend from abroad thats cool

But when they turn up Minki suddenly stands up all stiff and proper which is like

Woah okay

And he kneels down before his mum and dad and starts to say something which is almost inaudible

‘Mother, Father, I have brought before you today the person I told you about, the one I am in love with. I intend to marry this person once the time is right but I thought you should meet them in person first. I am very sorry for rejecting the many royals you previously brought before me, but it is because of them that I felt I had to turn them down.’

You reach the palace gardens and you’re surrounded by cherry blossoms and roses

And he doesn’t let go of your hand but instead brings it to his lips and kisses it gently

‘I should’ve confessed to you first but I wanted to get this out of the way… In case you didn’t catch that, I am in love with you, y/n’

Sure! Please note that I am in no way shaming people who enjoy SNK. I used to be a fan myself, the series has some really interesting philosophies going for it. It’s less about the series itself and more about the author. To answer this question, first let me talk about those philosophies. We will start with the similarities between German culture and history with SNK. In case you did not notice this series is very German-based, even all the names are of German origin, except for Mikasa who i’ll come back to.

the show is set in a quasi Germanic society full of German architecture and even German war cries (Are you the prey? No, we are the hunters) as well as german names. This is where things start getting interesting. The political ideology of the show aligns itself with the beliefs of a notorious nazi. A man named Carl Schmitt. The thing I liked about this show is the exploration of these themes through this dystopian world. It’s like ‘what if these beliefs are the only thing keeping society from collapsing?’. Central to Schmitt’s philosophy and SNK’s civilization is the concept of what he calls ‘the political’. There are 3 concepts that he believed situate the political and create a ‘stable’ society. 1- Difference, conflict and inequality. 2- clear distinction between friends and enemies. 3- sovereignty. He highlights that since discord and inequality are inevitable, humanity at it’s basic nature is savage, and that for stability you must fight to survive. Remind you of something? To quote snk, ‘The world is a cruel place, if you want to live you have to fight.’ A constantly reoccurring theme. Further mirroring of Schmitts ideology that states it’s not politics’ job to fix inevitable inequalities in society since they will always exist anyways; instead a strong sovereign should be in control of the population, SNK develops the 3 walls which literally separate the different classes in society. Each wall system is it’s own cast system. The people in wall Maria are not as safe as the people inside wall rose and wall sina. While people are getting eaten on the outskirts, there are people sitting around playing chess. The parallels get real wack when you compare Schmitts idea that to situate the political what is needed is nationalism and survival of the fittest. The nationalistic duty of the warrior class is literally highlighted in opening 1 which looks and sounds like triumph of the will nazi nationalist propaganda. Really, just hear it.The literal lyrics of SNK’s first opening are about ‘having the will of starving wolves.’ To cut things short, SNK had the potential to be a series heavily critical of this guy’s ideology, or explore it in this world that allows for it. Too bad after the author’s political beliefs were revealed, neither seem to be an option. Why would a Japanese man write something so heavily linked to controversial areas? Lets go back to Japan’s history. Once upon a time, Japan was parading around with an imperialist army colonizing the East through brute military power. This included torturing of citizens and selling of women as sex slaves. As a result, many countries suffered because of this but a country in particular still suffers the backlash of this and even has tense relations with Japan to this day, namely South Korea. To quote a post written by a Jew ‘The idea of the walls and their fragility is meant to criticize Japan’s antiwar policy, and the Titans coming back after 100 years is meant to imply that if Japan doesn’t start having wars and breaking down their “walls” and conquering the East again, other countries will come to terrorize the region. What bothers me most having watched the first season of it is the line about “Living like livestock”. It asserts the notion that to live without imperialism is a form of complacency, like somehow the country isn’t living life to its fullest if it isn’t out pillaging and raping the peoples of Korea, Manchuria, Indonesia, the Pacific Islands, etc’. Wait , wait. How the hell did we reach such a conclusion? This was unfortunately straight out the author’s mouth, he said some horrific things that upset Korean fans. Like literally all my Korean friends are vehemently against this series. The character called Dot Pixis is based on general Yoshifuru Akiyama, a famous war criminal during the occupation of Korea who Attack on Titan’s writer, Hajime Isayama, called “frugal and respectable” on his twitter account. Erwin Smith is named after a Nazi called Erwin Rommel who, despite occasionally defying orders he deemed “unjust”, was still a fucking Nazi and still took part in the Holocaust. The one that hits the hammer to the head is perhaps the most confound. This man ended up being not just a person who is pro the nazi movement and the ideology it pushes forward, but also a man who condones the actions of an imperialist nationalist war movement through his work. He literally stated that the colonization of Korea and the east, despite how gruesome and bloody was ‘necessary’. You can imagine how disturbing this is for Korean fans of the series. Specially when Japanese Mikasa was almost sold as a sex slave..something the Japanese army did to their women..among other women from different nationalities such as China. What turned me off isn’t his shitty streaky fight sequences that some people call ‘art’, nor his cheap resort to hard hitting gore and hard to digest backstories instead of actually fleshing out a story and it’s characters to draw the audience’s emotions, but the ideas he wishes to push forward. Whether we like it or not, and you can ask any mass com major about this, media has a very direct influence on the way we think and see things. Y’all might end up quoting SNK not realizing you are echoing nazi propaganda. Hell, even if that isn’t his intention, I don’t care. I’m not supporting a man who is pro Nazi society. If the tables turned and SNK was based on what Israel and England did to Palestine, or France to Algeria and Lebanon etc, i’d be so angry to see people supporting it. ‘Is our blood so cheap just because it isn’t yours?’ (yes our bc my half arab ass sees all of arabs as our). Out of that sensitivity, I cannot sit here and just ignore all of that for shitty temporary entertainment which can easily be replaced with much better series with fan bases that don’t ship 15 year old erin with 30 year old levi. Sorry for the long ass post, but I hope this cleared stuff up.

Thank you so much for responding to my ask and in such a detailed way. Most people barely care enough to write a sentence that sounds like they're fed up for some reason, so I'm not quite sure about that. But thank you. I know this is another annoying question, but were there any slightly negative displays of "affection" or actions towards Zayn, like when a fan threw a Zayn cut-out head on stage and Harry kicked it off (😭) or moments where it looked like they didn't miss him? I just don't like

to delusion myself like I used to, and staying in some fantasy world where I just entertain myself with the thought that they all missed him so much, when there’s also a sad possibility that they got even closer and better without him or felt too many negative feelings to even miss him, or even worse simply didn’t get along that well with him in the first place (we honestly don’t know). This sounds terrible and I know they’re all close, but do you think when Zayn left that Louis was closer with Liam etc. and when Zayn left he probably didn’t miss him as much because he got along very well with the other guys? I thought I remembered Louis saying a few times when asked about Zayn (although to be fair it sounded kind of fake and like he was told to say it) that they were better without Zayn because they’re all much closer now or something which makes me sad bc while it’s great that they apparently got much closer, I also always thought that Louis and Zayn were just that bit closer because, let’s face face it, not all of your friends are going to be equal. You always, at least for me, connect with and get along better with someone else, not that you don’t get along with the others, but every friend i get along with in different amounts. Do you think Louis genuinely meant that or do you think he really did miss Zayn a lot and was even closer with him? Sorry, I also forgot another moment - where they were asked about tattoos and I think the question was about if they regretted it and Harry says, without knowing, something about how he’d never do something embarrassing like getting a Ying Yang tattoo and even mocks it with some accent without even meaning to, and Louis starts laughing hard and Harry doesn’t get it, and then suddenly realizes and starts laughing and Louis says something like “oh you get it now” and they kind of are subtly making fun of Zayn because Zayn got a Ying Yang tattoo :/ It makes me upset because I can’t tell if Louis was actually making fun of Zayn in that way when you dislike someone and mock them or in a friend way or in a way like he was just laughing at the irony of what Harry said without even knowing? Idk, it seems negative and I don’t want to believe they made fun of him and to think there are other moments too, some maybe we didn’t even catch.

I’m gonna be honest, sugarplum…This is a slightly odd request, to me…hahaha. But I get what you mean, and sure, I guess there were some less than stellar moments of them being a little petty too. I think in the grand scheme of things, its never been meant with actual malice, but rather trying to make light of a situation they all (Zayn included) had to bob and weave through. The press, and admittedly, some of us fans, wanted to hear them mention Zayn to indicate they were somewhat okay, but the press sometimes didn’t present it as kindly or innocently as they could. Some wanted to drum up drama for the 1D vs Zayn press stories. But ultimately, I didn’t think of it too much, because I feel like it just sours a good mood. And I think their friendship extended far longer than some petty off-handed comment they made here or there.

But, you asked for certain moments, so ill give you the few I can think of. I don’t really want to draw too much negative attention here, because anybody who knows me knows in absolute ot5 trash, and I think like any good friendship they can work things out and talk things through what upset them. So DONT look at these and make a definitive opinion, when we don’t know what was said and apologized later on. They’ve had plenty of time to reflect on their mistakes and grow from their darker, les honorable moments. I still think they could work things out as friends, despite everything.

You’ve already mentioned the cardboard cutout and yin-yang thing, two things of which I’ve also heard alternative takes on it. I didn’t see a clear shot of Harry kicking it until now,

but even then, it still doesn’t look out of the realm of possibility that he was simply trying to clear the stage. To me, even if he did do it intentionally, he doesn’t seem to be doing it with any aggression, so I don’t think it was as malicious as it was first made out to be. What would you have done in that situation yourself? Its tricky to imagine how you’d navigate through that. The second moment being the yin-yang thing.

Which, fair enough, does sound a little petty. I wont say it doesn’t. BUT, that weekend before this interview, the boys had gone back to London to do a performance at the Royal Variety Performance, in which Jack Whitehall (also a friend of harry) later walked out on stage dressed up like Harry, wearing a wig and tons of silly random black and white tattoos, to show how randomly tattooed Harry Styles really is, the dork…

If you look at his abdomen, to the right, there’s Jack as “Harry Styles” with a yin-yang tattoo. So, was it about Zayn? Maybe. Was it about this? Who knows. I’m not siding one way or another. I’m just giving two sides to the things I’ve read. If you think they're ‘reaches’, so be it. I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything. The other moments I seem to remember were just one or two where…

Some may say he was being shady, other might say he was simply trying to diffuse the awkward tension and make light of the situation by cracking a joke, as iffy as that may be. I don’t know what H’s intentions were, but its in the past. I’m not here to drive up drama again, which may result anyway from a post like this. But just know I have no interest in hearing any shit about either side. I’m only answering this for the sake of getting it out of the way and answered for you. I don’t wanna hear Zayn slander, Harry slander, or Louis slander. Not my blog’s interest. That’s that. They’ve moved on and grown. Some even reconnecting. Friendship can be wildly unpredictable.

Anywho, about you wondering whether Louis found a shift in becoming closer to another boy like Liam after Zayn left, I don’t think he was actively trying to push Zayn out of his life. At that time, Zayn himself was trying to distance himself from everyone, not just his bandmates, but everyone. He needed some alone time to get in his head, so Louis and the boys let him have that. Its no surprise Louis was closest to Zayn

and even when he *could have* slipped up and talked shit, he didn’t. When he was asked on air if Drag Me Down was about Zayn ‘draggin them down’, Louis very smoothly called them out on their shit. “Are you trying to look for some kind of controversial answer here? You’re not getting it! The song is not about that obviously.”

So…as much as there could have been petty comments from Louis, he actually maintained a pretty decent attitude through the press wanting to pull the drama out of him.

How do I write an autistic villain without demonizing autism by accident? ;-;

I’m not really sure why you’re messaging this to me. I’m really sorry but I’m not an expert on like.. political stuff about autism stereotyping, just because I’m autistic. And it depends on which country you live in, I know that america has a far more visible sort of cultural presence for stereotypes, due to the whole Autism $peaks controversies. I dont live in america and I’m not super smart or anything, so yeah this is a disclaimer that this is just my opinion and you should probably research answers given by other people too. And maybe ask people about the specific circumstances of what you’re writing, like the context of the setting of the story and what the villain is like, etc. I’d be happy to chat to you about that if you need help! (but again, im no expert, lol)

ANYWAY!

My opinion on the subject is that having an autistic villain is perfectly fine, as long as you’re not villainizing autism. Like...* Don’t make the autism the reason theyre a villain.* Don’t make people scared of them because of the autism, rather than because they’re a villain.* Don’t treat their autistic traits as scary or inherantly villainous.* Don’t make anyone insult them for their autism and act like its justified because they’re evil.

And similarly its bad form to do any of that stuff in regard to any sort of minority really. An example that always bugged me is how Excellus from Fire Emblem Awakening is scary and evil because he’s a murderous monster, yet everyone in the game constantly insults him for the fact he acts ambiguously gay/transgender/effeminate. Like, there’s way too many jokes about people finding him ‘disgusting’ because of some random thing he can’t change, like a sexuality, race or mental illness which plenty of non-evil people have too! It also lessens his impact as a villain because the characters barely even address the actual villainous things he does, and he doesnt seem to have any motive at all. They just ride on the whole ‘the audience will find him gross’ thing as a crutch and forgot to bother writing a good villain.

Oh, and your concerns are indeed valid, yo! Sometimes it is important to think about the context you created a character in, even if you didnt intentionally create any negative messages within your writing.It’s just that the case where a character will be seen as villainizing [minority trait] for being a villain... that’s kind of only in a very specific circumstance? its just that this specific circumstance is very very common in mass media nowadays.It’s ‘The Smurfette Principle’.If you only have one character of a minority in your cast, its easy for an uninformed audience to pick up messages that you’re saying ALL members of that minority are the same as them.If you only have one autistic character and he’s the villain, then you might accidentally be villainizing him. In a world where autistic characters being villainized for their autism is already very common, people could just assume you made them autistic for the same reason all those other writers did- because they think it’s ‘scary’. It feeds the stereotype even if you didn’t conciously intend it that way.

So a very very easy way to fix this problem is just to add multiple characters of a minority into your story, filling various roles from villain to hero to helpful npc. or anything you can think of!

Another good quick fix is to have your villain be autistic, but portray their autistic traits as sympathetic/relateable/a humanizing aspect of them. Not just portraying it as something neutral that doesnt make them scary, but going out of your way to add some scenes showing how they’re just like anybody else. Or even making it one of their redeeming traits!It doesn’t have to outright be something like ‘yo being autistic makes me inherantly good and childlike’, which is a stereotype all to itself, lol. But you could show them experiencing predjudice from another character, in a way that makes the audience sympathise. Honestly having a character attack them for being autistic instead of being a villain would be a good way to do this, as long as that character is actually shown as being wrong for what they’re doing. Or simply showing the villain having common autistic traits, facing common problems, doing common everyday things... that can be enough to portray autism positively. Have them shown doing this stuff outside of the situation of them being villainous. It makes them feel more human and less of an abstract symbol of evil. And because these small glimpses of normality are lightening the mood, they become seen as a positive aspect!

KIND OF AN OFFTOPIC TANGEANT SORRYJust my personal experience as an autistic kid experiencing this story... I personally headcanoned Cyrus from pokemon as autistic. Not because he’s ‘scary and emotionless’, but because his backstory was relateable to me as an autistic person. It’s said that his parents were emotionally abusive, and that he had nobody to turn to because everyone thought he was ‘a creepy kid’. And he was able to find solace by obsessing over repairing machines in his bedroom, and apparantly has trouble understanding people because they can’t be fixed as easily. Stuff like maths and science are kind of a stereotypical Special Interest for autistic children to be given in fiction, I guess because it makes you seem more intelligent when you obsess about that instead of video games, norse mythology, or collecting tiny novelty spoons from around the world XD (Yeah i was a weird kid.)So yeah sorry I went a little offtopic there, but the point is that it might have been by accident instead of intention but that villain has a lot of traits that read as autistic. And when i first played Diamond and Pearl I actually disliked him a lot because of that, I felt like they were villainizing someone who seemed relateable and potentially redeemable. I mean, he seemed pretty depressed too! Give that man some therapy! But when I played Platinum and got to learn his backstory I started to feel like the writers actually did want us to feel sympathetic to him, because of how all those ‘scary’ traits were presented so sympathetically. Like.. the backstory isn’t that he became evil because he was an autistic kid who did creepy things like obsess about machinery and suck at social contact. No, he became a villain because he was abused by his parents, him being ‘weird’ is just intended to make it clear here that he didnt deserve it. It makes him pitiable, it makes him relateable, it makes you feel so much more frustrated that nobody listened to him and saved him from that hell, and nobody even seems to remember him fondly, just because he was ‘weird’. And hell, even his ‘emotion is evil’ philosophy seems very relateable to me as an autistic child. It seems like he learned to seclude himself to avoid angering his parents. That’s the impression I got from his final scene in Platinum, where he finally acts angry at you for beating him, then gets angry at himself for expressing emotion and forces himself to go back to how he usually talks. I get a bit pissed off whenever I see fans of the series claim he actually IS emotionless, lol! This scene made it clear to me that this is just a guy who WISHES he was emotionless, somehow seeing it as the only way to be free of pain. Someone who struggles to deal with his own emotions, or feels like he’s disgusting when he expresses them. And this is VERY relateable specifically to an autistic kid who suffered from an abusive parent! “Quiet Hands” is a kind of common concept that autistic kids might experience, that’s the name for a popular ‘parenting technique’ that really fucks people up. Focusing on making your kid never ‘act autistic’, rather than actually helping them understand things. ‘Quiet Hands’ is specifically about slapping or smacking your kid whenever they show stimming behaviour. (Hand flapping being a common way this symptom can manifest.) We’re taught never to be too loud, and to always always have to restrain ourselves to avoid embarassing our parents. We have to try and learn how to act like ‘normal people’ and become scared of harmless parts of our own brain just because theyre ‘embarassing’, leading to even worse emotional problems as an adult. i mean seriously how is it logical to tell a kid who has troubles with social interaction that they shouldnt even practise it?? Plus its a huge mess to teach these kids to do way more emotional labour than neurotypical kids are expected to do, and then treat them like they’re below average intelligence for not being able to do twice as much as everyone else...

ANYWAY! That’s a thinG! Sorry I went rambling off there about how a particular fictional character touched my heart, lol!I just kinda wish he could be canonically autistic, or if I had similar canonically autistic characters to relate to, instead. So i think having more autistic villains can’t be bad, we’re so badly in need of more autistic characters in general! And villains have a unique perspective of being able to hit our emotions the hardest. I think its easier to cry over someone who has a sad backstory of how they became evil, compared to anything else!So yeah what I was trying to say before I went offtopic is that if the backstory is ‘became evil because autism’, then people will complain. But if the backstory is ‘became evil because someone mistreated them because autism’ then that’s a good way to make people sympathise with autism. Aaaaand I’m bad at explaining this, because autism XD Well, i mean, my personal symptoms and lack of diagnosis til I was an adult means that I’m still working on learning how to communicate correctly, I don’t mean every autistic person writes terrible tl;dr advice posts that degrade into pokemon XDOh man i feel embarassed now, you asked me such a polite question and I didnt know how to answer it very well...I just hope maybe I inspired you to go out and do more research, rather than putting you off with my nonsense!

I am upset about the gay subplot in beauty and the beast

I saw beauty and the beast last night and it was magical and I was so excited for lefou’s little gay subplot because like yeah representation in a major disney movie how #progressive

but like

I am so upset about it and obviously spoilers so you have to click the thing

okay WHAT the HECK was that even.

let’s start this journey right from when I read a post on facebook from one my conservative high school friends about how upset they were that lefou was gay and like “don’t mess with the classics” “whats the point of him being gay” “just keep him straight” and all that dumb crap. so anyway they linked to an article with an interview with the director and i can’t find the article BUT

the director was basically like “yeah we think lefou is kind of a boring, two-dimensional character so we thought to ourselves: what if we added a story about this character really dealing with certain aspects of himself, and coming to a realization at the end of the movie? I won’t spoil anything....but there’s a scene at the end that will really charm our audiences ;)”

so i was like well dang OKAY nice disney

and in the back of my head i thought to myself “ok self don’t get too hype because the way that interview went, it looks like disney is really milking this gay thing because like WHAT a good marketting ploy”

right? because like im not claiming I know ANYTHING about effective marketting campaigns but I do think I know enough about how people think that I can say that adding some #controversial garbage to the movie would stir a lot of people up, getting more people talking about the movie and posting about it on social media, and add a whole different level of interest that wasn’t previously there. AND people who wouldn’t normally go see a movie musical about a classic disney princess would probably be more inclined to go see it if it’s some groundbreaking controversial movie featuring the first openly gay disney character.

so im like “okay there’s a chance this is a marketting strategy but whatever at the end of the day even if they made lefou gay to make money, at least its a gay character”

so i saw the movie (which was so so great it was full of magic and i loved emma watson and ewan mcgregor and audra macdonald and whoever played the beast and gaston also the special effects were unreal)

and the entire time lefou was on stage I was basically like “oh man hes gonna be so gay im ready hes gonna be gay af oh man here we go” and at that part in the beginning where he talks to those girls and is like “it’s never gonna happen, ladies” i was like “well okay the gay guy being in love with his straight best friend is kind of an overused trope but whatever representation is representation” and then every scene he was in I was basically like “OH MAN WHAT GAY STUFF IS HE GONNA DO NOW”

but he just never did any gay stuff at all. he didn’t do anything romantic toward anyone. but I still had hope. like the same hope i had for the patriots during the superbowl. and like how my hope for the patriots payed off in the end, i knew my hope for the groundbreaking first gay disney character would pay off in the end, just like the director hinted at.

AND THEN.

AAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNDDDDD THEEEEEEEENNNNN.

LITERALLY NTOHING HAPPENED. I might be mistaken, but I think the “gay” ending that would “charm” audiences was when lefou is showing ACCIDENTLY dancing with a guy for literally half a second.

for those of you who are cool with the spoiler I need to explain what I saw (thank goodness I saw it because if i blinked i would’ve missed it):

basically its the end of the movie belle and the prince are at their wedding audra is BELTING the title song and there’s this huge ballroom dance scene. everyone is dancing with everyone and like switching partners and all that. And during one of the partner switches, lefou manages to accidentally start dancing with another guy.

and in the 10-15 frames that was shown of that encounter, literally NOTHING romantic happens. the vibe is not “oh im dancing with a guy and like wait he’s cute?? and i like it?? could i possibly be gay? am i learning about myself?”

NO ITS NOT THAT.

the vibe is “oops silly me! I’m a secondary character and my only character trait is that im silly josh gad who plays exactly one character in every project ive ever been in! of course a goofball like me would misstep and start dancing with a guy because two guys dancing together is a JOKE that we should LAUGH at but not THINK ABOUT because in the time it took to read this sentence the moment passed because it last about .2 seconds!”

The whole “lefou is gay but its a secret” thing was a marketing ploy. and like a successful one too. People were gonna see BATB anyway, but I’m sure more people were planning on seeing once there were movements to boycott it and all that garbage. It just generated interest and disney made money.

WHICH TRUST ME WOULD BE TOTALLY OKAY IF lefou ACTUALLY had a gay subplot!!!!!!!! Whatever!!!!!!! Generate all the interest you want!!!!!! but like.......have the thing we’re interested in?????

Because since there WASN’T any gay subplot, Disney made money by essentially LYING to people and using FALSE ADVERTISING and literally EXPLOITING the gay audiences who spent money to see the first ever gay representation in a disney movie.

so anyway this is a pretty long post about something thats ultimately pretty small and i get that but I’m still like upset about it. And I get that “its a childrens movie it doesn’t matter” and “it was a still a good movie it doesn’t matter” but i dont really want to spend the time to write about why it does matter. this is mostly just venting.

Overall, really good movie 8/10, but still pretty upset about this.

Top 5 favorite games

Alright so here is the second, part I’ve been spending a lot of time working on this whole thing so I hope you enjoy!

Number 5:The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap Developer and Release year: Nintendo, 2004 Japan, 2005 NA What it can be played on: GBA/ Wii U Virtual Console

So I’m not gonna pretend like 4 of my top 5 picks aren’t Zelda games, that being said the Minish Cap is a game I played more recently, around last year, and at first after beating it I sort of just put it in my top 20, I loved it yeah, but I never really thought about it until now that, even though it was short, every thing about this game was solid and fun to me, the shrinking mechanic was challenging but very well done aesthetically, and the story was good, with the relationship between Link and Zelda, them being childhood friends and Link doing whatever it takes to have his friend back, and the villain Vaati was interesting in his relationship with the Minish (The inhabitants of the tiny world) and his final boss fight being very difficult for me, and the story wraps up nicely as usual, all in all it was a Zelda experience that I truly loved, and my favorite 2D Zelda game.

Favorite part(s): Definitely the Aesthetic and design of the tiny world, and all the charm around the entire game

Number 4:Sonic Adventure 2 Developer and Release year: Sega, 2001 What it can be played on: Dreamcast/Gamecube/PC/PS3/XB360

There it is, probably the most controversial pick on this entire list, unless maybe the next one is too i dont know, but I am a Sonic fan, which is something sort of rare these days, unless you like Mania which is pretty awesome but I’m more of a 3D guy, but this game is my favorite Sonic game because, even though the story is confusing I love it, it was dark and i legitimately felt like Dr.Robotnik was actually a major threat. There are 3 types of gameplay, the Classic Sonic/Shadow, The treasure hunting, and the robot/mech levels that make up the game, the best is the Classic gameplay of Sonic and Shadow, that usually isn’t up for debate, the other modes are pretty fun, but I love the game for the Sonic/Shadow levels, and the game to me really picks up on the Space Colony Ark in the Final Act. The *spoilers ahead* part where Shadow (who I forgot to mention is one of my favorite characters and not because I’m an edgy frick) turns to Sonic’s side and fights the Biolizard to buy them time, Shadow’s character arc was amazing in this game, and the final boss was really fun too, not to mention the soundtrack i mean, it’s a sonic game of course there’s a good soundtrack.

Favorite part(s): Shadow the Hedgehog, his levels, character arc, and general mystery surrounding the black and red anti-hero was amazing to me.

Number 3:The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Developer and Release year: Nintendo, 2011 What it can be played on: Wii/Wii U virtual console

I have defended this game in so many tweets and irl debates it’s incredible, Skyward Sword released to a 10/10 from IGN (that doesn’t matter to me much but it is an accolade) a 93 Metacritic score, which I do care about since it is an overall score and even got some Game of the Year awards in a year where Skyrim, Portal 2, Minecraft, Mario Galaxy 2, and many more were up for contention, but that proves nothing I just wanted to prove that I have argued about it enough that I know what I’m talking about. The main problem everyone has with this game is the motion controls, they say they are not accurate or don’t work, which can sometimes be true but, Scott Falco (he makes the “”with a side of salt series which he has some very good opinions on) says it the best, he said that he didn’t like it sitting down just waggling the wii remote, you’ve gotta stand up and play, then you fell immersed like YOU are the one doing it and not the wii remote, that is what i agree with and stand by anyway. Now past those criticisms I don’t think there are many more, some people don’t like the story, but to me this game has the BEST story in maybe any game I’ve ever played, the Link and Zelda relationship is better than any other game in my opinion and only Breath of the Wild comes close to that relationship in my opinion, now, the rest of the story is intriguing too, the origin of the master sword (I’m not going to comment on Fi, some people got too annoyed with her to focus on her amazing character arc in my opinion) the existence of Skyloft and the very first Link, Zelda, and Ganon in the form of Demise, all of it was done well and was very interesting to me. I liked the gameplay too, I think the new sprinting and stamina system was revolutionary to the series and made movement a lot more improved from previous entries in the franchise. The final act with the boss battle with Ghirahim and eventually Demise were very cinematic and awesome, and with Zelda’s life on the line during the whole thing it made it just that much more intense.

Favorite part(s): THE STORY, I can not say enough how much I love the story but also I loved the boss battles, Demise,Ghirahim,The Ancient Automaton, and all of them were fun to me.

Number 2:The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Developer and Release year: Nintendo, 2017 What it can be played on: Switch/Wii U

This game is a new staple in the Zelda series, the highest selling of all time, a new open world, a Game of the Year winner in almost all the awards shows, and even still people love to pick on this game a little bit, with all the weapon-breaking criticisms, and I know that can get annoying, but it does add a new layer of difficulty to an already difficult game, anyway Breath of the Wild was first known as Zelda for the Wii U, and it was revealed with a trailer at E3 2014 and was slated for release in 2015, of course it got pushed back and with Nintendo now finished with the switch they announced Breath of the Wild as a launch title, March 3rd, 2017 will always be one of my favorite days of all time, as I got my switch and had the first mainline Zelda game release as a fan of the series, and I did NOT stop playing it that night until about 1 AM (thats a rookie number now i mean c’mon I tweeted at 3 AM last night then went ahead and watched a movie) which was super late for me at the time though and I went to bed ecstatic about the game, I had gotten to a part where the story was starting to go forward and I couldn’t wait to finish it, about 6 or 7 days later I did and BOI let me tell ya I loved every second of that week, the gameplay is smooth and fun with combat being re-invented and then the Guardians were really fun because up until the end i didnt know about the shield thing so I would just bash them with all the brute force i had, the final boss fight was incredible (thats a common theme with my favorite Zelda games) and the Dark Beast Ganon fight was really atmospheric and entertaining as well and the ending with the re-uniting of Link and Zelda was so well done and just makes for a perfect ending.

Favorite Part(s): I loved the massive open world and all the secrets and new enemies and shrines to discover, it just made my time playing the game very enjoyable! Plus everything else like the story and the combat.

Number 1:The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Developer and Release year: Nintendo 2002 JP/2003/ 2013 HD What it can be played on: Gamecube/Wii U

The Wind Waker. My unwavering favorite game for who knows how long now, the first Zelda game I ever finished and my introduction to great single player games as a whole really. The Wind Waker released in December in Japan and followed up the next year World Wide, the art style of the cell-shaded characters had never been seen before in a Zelda game and people were skeptical about whether or not it would go down well. Well it released and the people of December in Japan and of March World wide were very pleased with the game and loved it for its gameplay, story, vast ocean and many islands to explore with many hours of gameplay to be put in discovering everything the game had to offer, as for me i wouldnt get to play it for a while longer considering i was VERY young at the time of its release, so I would get to play it when it re-released for the Wii U in 2013, about ten years after the release of the original, I didnt get it though until Christmas of 2015 (or 2014 Im not honestly sure) but it wasnt even my gift, as I’ve said before it was my brother’s and i just watched him play it for a bit and tried it myself after being intrigued, and I dont know if I stopped very much over the course of the time I played it, I was challenged by the puzzles, and from the very opening at Outset Island I loved the art style and loved the characters in the story, with the new unique take on Zelda as Tetra, having Link sailing instead of walking, heck even having Hyrule not even the setting (for most of the game anyway) was new to the series and as my first 3D Zelda game I was captivated by all of it, everything about my favorite franchise now was fresh and new and thats something I’ll never get to experience again which is probably why I remember and still play the Wind Waker which such a fondness today, because of how new everything was to me and how much I enjoyed all of it, not to mention the final boss fight (here we go again) was and is still my favorite, with the world being submerged around you and you and Zelda enclosed with no way out other than through Ganondorf, the games story as always (I hate how repetitive I am) ended very well and to this day it remains one of my favorite stories ever told, and I don’t know if anything will be able to top this game just because of the time in my life in which I got to experience it and with how solid the game as a whole is.

Favorite Part(s): The Wide-open sea and the islands are all so cool and creative, plus the Final boss fight still stands as my favorite to this day.

He texted me the next day saying that he was going to get a quote from a garage and got back to me later with a quote for 400 through a 'friend of a friend's garage'. At this point I was a bit suspicious and the amount seemed very high for what I thought was not a lot of damage but at the same time he said that he either wanted to do it like that or through the insurance and I really didn't want to loose my no-claims discount as insurance for young male drivers is very high without the no-claims. In the end I decided to pay him, not without a certain bitterness owing to the fact that he was pressuring me for an immediate decision, which also made me suspicious. Having sent the cheque for 400, he kept up communications initially and let me know that he'd received it. He said that he would send me a copy of the receipt from the garage for my records but once he received the cheque I never heard back and now cannot get a reply. Bit long-winded for a question but that's the background story, my question is two-fold: 1. Can I do anything about it? It's more the principle than the money that bothers me, I know that I caused damage to his car but I now suspect it wasn't as much as he claimed. 2. Does 400 sound like too much or should I stop worrying about it? I hit the back corner of his car with the back corner of mine, and he later told me that I had cracked the rear bumper, which needed replacing. I'm not sure of the make of the car but I think it may have been a Ford Fiesta or something similar. I would really appreciate any help as it's weighing on my mind... I don't like people walking over me. At least if the amount he claimed sounds reasonable I can put it down to him being a wanker but the amount claimed being fair and forget about the whole thing.""

Okay...so my husband has a 2004 Subaru WRX - bought from a private dealer. We have a car loan from our bank with no extended warranty. Our insurance is through Harleysville and we have to have full coverage on it so it's kinda pricey since his car is under the performance class. My car, is a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5i - just bought last month from a dealership with extended 5 year/60,000 warranty on powertrain (engine areas) and drive train (AWD) (?) something like that and is not bumper to bumper. We also have a car loan from the bank. The thing is, I have our car insurance on low deductibles making our monthly premiums high. I was thinking, since I have warranty on my car, the deductibles can be higher with a lower monthly premium since I have warranty from the dealer. Although, the warranty is only on powertrain and drive train, if I get tboned or scratches, then yes, I would have to pay a higher deductible to get my car fixed. What is the best thing to do?
