So as a direct consequence of Nora Sakavic’s return and announcement of a spin off on Jean, I have once again been thrown into the depths of the never ending spiral of re-reading aftg. And it’s lovely, as always. Rip my grades tho💀.

Andrew minyards closet is FULL. he’s the complete opposite of Neil, loves shopping, loves buying clothes (and buying neil clothes).

And what does neil do? Instead of wearing the clothes Andrew buys him, he just wears Andrew’s clothes

As much as I love writing from Andrew’s perspective, sometimes it’s sooo hard to get into his headspace and capture his voice. whereas Neil is a little easier because no matter what’s goin on around him he’s always a bitch at heart

Neil listening to Nicky talking about how he loves Erik because he feels he can lean on him all day and Erik will hold him up and all his problems too. How he made him okay again, saved his life, and made him a better and stronger person.

And then Neil going to practice and watching Andrew talk to Renee across the court and thinking about how Andrew is a steel force against everything Neil has told him so far. How he has given him a key and told him to stay. How he has shouldered all of Neil's problems and how he is keeping him alive and well, enough to live out his only passion which is to play Exy.

AND THEN bc he fucking loves the little violent bean that Andrew is (though he does know it yet), he decides to shoulder Andrew's problems himself by siding with Betsy to get Andrew clean after his assault so as not to face the trauma of it while being drugged to high water, taking the responsibility of watching Kevin's back until Andrew returns, and sacrificing himself up to Riko to protect Andrew from further harm because "if it means losing you then no"

The way Neil falls in love, slowly but surely, with all the signs laid bare. The way Neil falls in love by becoming the immovable weight holding Andrew's problems, the same way Andrew hold's his. THE WAY NEIL FALLS IN LOVE!!!

Thinking about how Neil and Andrew both helped each other to build a possible future for themselves both as individuals and as a couple.

They just came into each other's lives and completely upended them by offering honesty and trust.

Andrew offered Neil stability, protection, a home ("you gave me a key and called it home"), the prospect of not having to run anymore, of actually achieving his dreams and not ending up dead in a ditch at 18. He helped Neil build a new identity from the ground up that was just and truly Neil. (Not to discredit the part that the other foxes played in the last part!!)

In return Neil gave Andrew something to live for in the form of fixing his relationship with his cousin and brother so that he wouldn't end up alone after graduation. He made Andrew care about exy enough to make it into a career (even if it's just a little bit). He gave Andrew understanding when everyone else brushed him off and was prepared to go against everything that he's ever been taught about getting close to people, about saying the truth, about telling people who he is and just trusting people.

Andrew also gave his trust to Neil every time he did what Neil asked him to, every time he offered Neil a hard truth. Trusting that Neil wouldn't use it against him, wouldn't tell him it was all a misunderstanding. My boy put his stone cold lump of a heart in Neil's hands and trusted Neil not to squeeze.

Don't get me wrong, they're not beating the codependency allegations until they've lived apart. After Andrew's graduation. It's difficult, it's hell. But if Nora's ec says they make it, then I have faith that by the time they're living together again, their nothing will have turned into something else just as precious if not more.

Andrew Minyard puts on his black combat boots and black armbands. He wears his black hoodie because Andrew is not like other boys. His newest teammate Neil Josten has an aura of danger that Andrew knows he is better off not getting close. But Andrew cannot help it. He is like a moth drawn to a flame. Neil’s untamed auburn hair that is never styled yet it is messy in an effortless way and his big blue orbs that must have a lot of hidden secrets. Andrew knows he should not play with fire but with that toned body Andrew minyard can not stay away.

Whatever, not like Neil josten would notice him anyways. He is the outcast in his teams and no one likes him. Neil josten would not care about him.

Imagine Andrew’s surprise when Neil josten joins him on the roof and shares his secrets. Andrew is right, Neil has a very dark past that is even darker than Andrew’s. Neil is involved in the mafia! But because Andrew is not like other boys he does not care and promise to protect Neil even though Andrew probably cannot do anything if anything happens. Neil probably has to be the one to save Andrew.

Neil also turns out to be loaded and he buys Andrew a car when his was destroyed and Andrew cannot say no to a Maserati.

Everyone else on the team is so shock when super attractive good looking Neil josten will choose to be with someone like Andrew minyard but Neil does not care and growls at anyone that says anything bad about Andrew.

Let me have an andreil thought here:

Neil thinks he's good at reading people but he's really only good at recognising anger and hostility. His survival has always depended on being able to immediately clock if a person is an immediate danger to him.

And Andrew only communicates through violence and hostility. It's the only thing he knows will work. Every interaction is a fight for him, and anything less translates to being vulnerable. That's why we only really see him switching to neutral late in TKM when he's alone with Neil.

That's why I think Neil didn't clock that Andrew was into him for so long. He didn't think to look past the obvious hostility Andrew was displaying (which he does even with people we know he cares about).

Sure, Neil knew he could get away with more shit than the others when it came to Andrew, but he never knew why.

And as soon as Neil finds out that Andrew's into him, he switches gears. Andrew is still on his shit but now Neil has the right lense to interpret it correctly. Now he knows what to do to get on Andrew's wavelength, and most times Andrew doesn't need to be neutral and therefore feel vulnerable for Neil to understand him.

That's why they work. Only Neil is fucked up enough by life to not only understand but accept such a rough form of love language.

So i'm back from holiday and on my 13 hour flight all i could think about was Neil being so attentive of Andrew when he first learns he's afraid of heights and flying. The way he keeps an eye on Andrew before take off, the way he closes the shutter on the plane window, which i'm assuming is so Andrew doesn't have to see the take off or landing from the corner of his eye (which i can tell you from experience helps bc i too am afraid of heights and this used to help my flying anxiety a lot). Also the way he pays so much attention to Andrew that he notices the way he stops fiddling with his pen throughout the entire process of the ascent.

I feel like this moment is so underrated because to me Neil's mind tends to run a hundred miles an hour and while he so obviously notices these things he doesn't tend to dwell on them or at least he doesn't acknowledge how they make him feel they're just matter of fact to him. Like for example how Andrew doesn't like to be touched so Neil doesn't touch him without his consent. So Neil watches Andrew carefully as he boards the plane to see if he'll panic, he watches him as the plane takes off. He sees the hints of anxiety and he acts accordingly i.e keeping an eye on him and closing the window shutter.

Neil pays attention and then takes the necessary steps to make Andrew comfortable and i find that so goddamn beautiful it kinda makes my own heart skip a beat.

(Now lets just imagine all the future flights they have to take for games and Neil, instead of a lousy pen, offering up his hand to Andrew for him to fiddle with before flights, and to grip tightly during take offs and landings. Rubbing his thumb gently over the back of Andrews hand to sooth his anxiety. Neil providing a source of comfort and safety for Andrew's fears, telling him "i've got you, you're safe with me")

Here's a reminder that ANDREW DOES HEAL AND LEARN TO FEEL. Nora never said that Andrew never heals or that he doesn't get less apathetic. She said the opposite, actually. If you don't like the extra content, that's fine, but please actually read it before deciding to spread the incorrect assumptions people have made up about it. Just because Andrew never gets to the point where he smiles and laughs all the time doesn't mean he doesn't heal.

(Also, Nora never said Andrew never smiles, just that it's hard to imagine, and if he did, it'd be with only Neil around)
