What was the best book you’ve read so far this year?

LITTLE WOMEN and I will never shut up about it, that book is an all time favorite now and I wish I was still reading it tbh I could talk about it forever

What was the most disappointing book you’ve read so far this year?

I haven’t had anything tooo disappointing yet this year, I think I know my taste pretty well but I was a bit disappointed by A Cruel and Fated Light by Ashley Shuttleworth. It was just soooo slow compared to the first one (and third one) and felt like it was just setting up the next book. But the book after it was a 4.5 read so I’m still loving the series despite that little dent in the road!!

What’s the best book recommendation you received this year?

My friend encouraged me to read the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and it changed my brain chemistry that book is incredible and I could write essays about it

What was your first DNF of the year?

I actually DNFed The Mists of Avalon earlier this year which was so sad. I read like the first hundred pages and for some reason it wasn’t the vibe I was expecting so it threw me off and I couldn’t really enjoy it. I’m gonna try and pick it up again eventually tho!

What’s a new release of the year that you read and your thoughts?

To my knowledge I haven’t read anything that was released this year yet oops

I haven’t read any new releases yet, but I’m very excited for the new Percy Jackson book coming out later this year!

What’s the most beautiful book you’ve added to your collection or a beautiful book you’d like to own?

I got the British hardback version of Lessons in Chemistry and my heart is fulfilled this cover fits the vibe so much better than the American version 🥹

What genre have you read most this year?

Fantasy forrrr sure live laugh love fantasy

Do you feel like your tastes have changed or shifted at all this year? (New genre new trope or new theme?)

I wouldn’t say my taste has changed, more like I’m rediscovering the genres and themes I always loved as a kid and I still love them now that I’m getting back into reading. I just read the Priory of the Orange Tree and it’s launching my back into my high fantasy kick

How are your book goals going?

My goal this year is to read 22 books and I’ve read 11 already so I’m pretty proud!

A book that you feel embodies the vibe your your reading year

Legendborn and Bloodmarked I would say are the vibes I’ve been getting into this year, I’m so glad I read them but I also can’t believe how long I have to wait for the next one. It has a great balance of fantasy and contemporary which have been my main genres this year, and I just LIVED FOR the plot and Bree has my heart

tell us about Santos :3c...

My tav Santos!! He's a fighting x rogue class tiefling who's a bit worn out in life, but doesn't stop him from being the rock of the party. He's 143 years old and a seasoned weapons maker, tho it's been a few years since he's kept up with the craft. He dabbled a bit as a mercenary in his 90's, but ultimately ended up as a bartender in Baldur's Gate yearning to go back to guildwork. [Which is when he got abducted, after a shift]

Personality wise he's not the loudest nor quietest of the group (choosing to be the listener a bit more than be the talker). He can seem quite serious, but is relatively easy-going and is known to give some of his own snark back when need be. He's a realist with a good heart, but won't hesitate to lie himself (and party) out of situations and attempt questionable persuasive maneuvers to at least avoid some unnecessary bloodshed. (Tho sometimes he goes a little too far with the snappy remarks at enemies that leads to greater bloodshed)

He has a well of unwavering patience for his party members in the emotional sense, but gets incredibly exasperated by their antics and rivalry (looks at Shadowheart & Lae'zel, Gale & Astarion). He doesn't know what he's gonna do after they defeat the Absolute, but for now he'll just try and make sure that everyone in his party makes it out of this in one piece.

Character Relationships:

He gets along very well with Jaheira since they have a very similar sense of humor, their friendly jabs turn into some very confusing flirting for the rest of the party. Likes to poke fun at Gale, who has a bit of a crush on him. Santos has some propensity for magic and spellcasting, but it's unrefined and he never bothered to do much with it, tho he does like to ask Gale to teach him a thing or two when they have the downtime and he has access to a wizard with knowledge that loves to talk. He rebuffed Astarion's advances quite quickly, especially since he realized why he was doing it, but they remained good friends regardless, which it seems Astarion really needed. He lets Astarion feed off of enemies since they're gonna kill them anyways, but offers himself in case if emergencies. He's really good friends with Wyll and Karlach and can be found sharing a drink often in their downtime, both of them having Santos barking with laughter. He's not much of a meddler, but he'll leave their hang outs to leave both of them alone in hopes it'll inspire something.

He and Lae'zel have an unspoken camaraderie as fighters and weapon masters, and she likes that he'll give her bullshit right back. He likes sparring with her bcs she has him eating shit and landing on his ass, but he learns a lot. He butts heads a bit with Shadowheart and Halsin, but they eventually remain on friendly terms and respect each other. Santos killed Minthara and has yet to meet Minsc.

you can always tell when someone doesn't have maga men in their life and god it makes me angry.. "if you're nice and compassionate you can be the one woman that makes them realize women aren't mean!" my mom bent over backwards for my dad for 25 fucking years he has plenty of other women kissing his ass and it never changed anything. do you really think that before being radicalized they never knew a single kind woman? they were never friends with a nice girl? alt-right men's problem with women isn't just that they've experienced too many mean women and they need to be shown that women can be nice, it's that they think women are inferior and don't deserve rights and don't understand anything so you can do what you want with them. and it takes a lot more than being nice to show someone that you aren't inferior. this isn't a case of being nice even when it's hard for the sake of deradicalization, it's about spending every fucking interaction with someone trying to get them to see you as a human being with value and a functioning intellect while they just laugh and show you that's never going to happen.

i cannot stress this enough: random women are not just going out and Being Mean to men. ur average guy interacts with plenty of women throughout his life- close women amongst their friends and family, casual interactions etc. most people don't start out being shunned by women, they start out being treated as NORMAL. & when they show their disrespect in normal society, it isn't tolerated, but when they go to alt-right spaces (which they're pushed towards online) they're told they're allowed to be as horrible as they want with no consequences because they're entitled to everything. it isn't "women aren't welcoming and the alt-right is so friendly so i'll become alt-right," it's "women don't let me disrespect them and the alt-right tells me fuck them, do whatever you want, you're entitled to it all" and why would you choose the group where you have to be a normal accountable person when there's a group that will reward you for being a shithead who gives no fucks?

the alt-right can afford to be more friendly and welcoming because they can allow bigotry. this can't work the same way for progressive spaces because we can be as kind & welcoming as possible but at the end of the day we have lines where we have to say "this behavior/speech isn't allowed in this space," and for certain people, that just can't win against a space where you can be as nasty as you want. these posts always end with a disclaimer saying "of course being kind doesnt mean you need to tolerate their bigotries" but what they don't realize and what drives me crazy is that women not tolerating bigotry IS the "women are mean" that radicalized them in the first place. they perceive you pushing back on any bigotry or bullshit as you being a meanie and treating them like they're ontologically evil. the 'kindness' they need to be deradicalized is you letting them walk all over you.

idk what the answer is to deradicalizing them and im sure relationships are part of it but you can be as kind as you want and all it will do is destroy you ime. i cant stand to see people (who have never even successfully deradicalized any man by being nice btw they always speak in hypotheticals and not from experience) double down on telling women to do things that will see no results and only hurt them, especially when any woman who has tried can tell you exactly how it went

the topic of this poll is one that is frequently avoided in the pink floyd fandom, but inevitably one we all consider – our individual views on what we think caused syd's psychological struggles (and by extension, led to his departure from the band). Hispanic Heritage Month + Band of Brothers

For the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), I rolled up my sleeves to do some research on Latinos who served in Easy Company.

Here's who I found…

Antonio C. "Tony" Garcia

Here's the bio & gif set I made for him:

Ynez M. "Tito" Mendoza

Ynez was born September 22, 1925 in California. His parents, Jose and Carlota, were both born in Mexico and had immigrated to the U.S.

He enlisted in Los Angeles in January 1944, and joined Easy Company as a replacement. In October 1944, he was wounded in the lower leg by artillery, but returned to the line December 1944.

After the war, he married and had 3 children. He died on June 30, 2011 at the age of 85.

Wiliam S. "Guillermo" Metzler

William was born and raised in Naco, Arizona. His parents, Francisco and Julia, were born in Hermosillo, in the Mexican state of Sonora. They married, and later immigrated with their first two sons to Arizona, where William and his other siblings were later born.

He was living in Los Angeles when he volunteered for the U.S. Army in August 1942. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.

He was killed in action in Normandy on June 24, 1944, at the age of 22.

Sergio G. Moya

Sergio was born on February 24, 1921, in San Francisco, California.

In February 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.

He was on the C-47 plane with Lt. Meehan that was shot down over Normandy by German anti-aircraft fire on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day). He died at the age of 23.

If you're new to the Dragon Age games or if you just want to play the first game again but don't have it, good news: Dragon Age Origins - Ultimate Edition is $4.99 US on GOG. Even better, it's part of their "Good Old Game Preservation Program," which means they've put significant effort into making sure it still runs on modern PCs. I've been able to run it smoothly on my laptop as-is, and with mods as long as I'm using the 4GB patch. The game does absolutely look 15 years old, and fans are incredibly mixed on the combat, but the story and companions are worth it. And once you buy it on GOG, you own it and can save the installers. No app download, site login, or internet connection required.

The sale runs until January 3rd, but if you miss it this time out, it goes on sale pretty often!
