Thoughts on New World Grease (2/2)
(First part)
So, while the first post was all about how much I loved the movie, I did mention there were things I wasn’t happy about.
Things I’m :| about
Okay, I did say I loved Sento trolling Kazumin, but the bit about making him believe his friends were dead just to increase his Hazard Level was… unnecessarily cruel. I get why it was made in-universe (it’s far more dramatic than “Kazumin has to rescue Misora”, especially since by the time Kazumin transformed into Perfect Kingdom, everyone else could transform too so there wasn’t this factor of “only Kazumin can do it” anymore). “YOU’RE THE DEVIL’S SCIENTIST!!!!!!!!!!”. Okay, I liked that line, actually.
I’ve never liked Gentoku/Sawa. I never have. And when the first spoilers came out in late August and I found out about these two becoming canon… let’s say I couldn’t stomach it well. I don’t like ships that are basically “he finds her hot, so he deserves her”, which is what Gentoku/Sawa and Kazumin/Misora ultimately come down to. That said, I did like the scene where she rescues him very much, and I appreciate that they were together before the movie started instead of having a painfully boring subplot about them realizing their feelings for each other.
Although I do find the couple t-shirt joke fun, I wish the t-shirts had said something other than the gross hotel line Gentoku says to her in the first episode. I get that it’s reached a meme status in the Japanese fandom, but I think there are better ways to make a couple canon than give the characters t-shirts that basically say “yup, we have sex”. Even the Best Match t-shirt Gentoku wore in the Cross-Z movie could have been a slightly better choice imo. But well, at least Gen-san and Sawa-tan (Sawa-TAN…………) look happy together.
NO NASCITA GANG? C’mon! There’s not a single scene where all of them are together! However, I did enjoy very much the scenes where the characters interact with one another, even if the whole gang isn’t together. But… yeah. It also feels like they’re growing apart, and that in the end we have Sento+Banjou, Gentoku+Sawa and Kazumin+Misora rather than the family they were in the show. While it’s understandable (their lives are very different now), it’s still a bit sad imo
Misora didn’t interact with any of her friends! Yeah, I enjoyed her interactions with the crows, but I wish she had at least a scene with Sawa or SENTO (Banjou gets to save her, which is something lol Can’t believe they interacted more in the Grease movie [2 lines] than in the CROSS-Z ONE).
Okay, now that Build is officially over (unless a novel gets announced at some point), I’ll complain about it yet again: NO FEMALE RIDERS. C’mon, this is not even about Misora or Sawa not becoming riders (although it would have been cool if Sawa got to transform into Night Rogue when she had to rescue Gentoku); one of the villains riders could have been a woman. Or one of the Washio bros -what happened to them?- could have been a woman. In the end you can transform as long as you’re a man under 50, and if you’re a woman you have to wait patiently till you find a man who pervs on you.
That last scene with Kazumin and Misora… it was cute. Yeah. It was pretty much the same scene as in the beginning of the Idol Otaku special, but this time around Kazumin acknowledges that Misora may not end up being his girlfriend, and that’s fine. And when he thinks Misora is asking him to go buy some stuff with her again (which is what she did in the Idol Otaku special), he doesn’t look heartbroken or dejected, and he’s willing to go with her anyway. Okay, that bar is admittedly very low, but that’s something. And all things considered, I prefer it’s Misora the one who asks him out rather than the other way around. Then, why do I have this scene in the part of stuff I don’t actually like that much? Because while the scene in itself is fine, EVERYTHING else isn’t. Imagine I lost my memories for some unknown reason and I don’t know what happened between Misora and Kazumin so far – would this movie actually make me warm up to them as a couple? Definitely not. So yeah, it’s about time to talk about…
Things I didn’t like
KAZUMIN. I love Kazumin. I really do. I even wrote a loooong post about how much I love him and how amazing I find him despite his otaku idol thing. And in this movie he was very cool, yes, but he was an asshole to Misora, especially in the Idol Otaku special. He’s usually gross, but this was… too much. I get being excited when he thinks Misora is actually asking him out, and I found the part when he dresses up and then she gives him that “present” cute and funny. But then Kazumin ruins it by basically telling Misora he plans to fuck her later that night (he repeats Gentoku’s infamous hotel line), asking her to marry him and giving her a Mii-tan cosplay. Dude...
Misora was smiling and having fun before Kazumin ruined it. I feel so sorry for her :(
If that weren’t enough, Kazumin refuses to protect Misora at first because she turned him down. Misora obviously doesn’t know about this, but it makes her speech about how amazing Kazumin is a bit… huh.
Why does Misora want to date this man? Although it’s obvious she cares deeply for him and she likes him to some extent (she could have asked Sento or Banjou to go on that shopping date with her instead), she’s mostly unhappy around him. And I know she’s meant to be seen as a ~tsundere~ -according to her own actress, at least-, but most of the times she looks genuinely pissed off at him.
I think this movie had the chance to ‘fix’ their relationship, make these characters bond properly and even make fans happy by making them canon. But Toei just chose to do the latter and ignore everything else. Like, okay, I don’t like this ship, but if you’re going to take this path, at least do it properly? I wish there was at least a lil scene at the end where Kazumin apologizes to Misora for their first ‘date’ and calls her by her name.
Anyway, you get it. I’m disappointed in the way Misora/Kazumin was handled. I think there was a lot of potential in their relationship (not necessarily in a romantic way), but Muto chose the ‘comedy’ over having them actually bond with each other. And if Build has proved something, is that you can actually have both things! I can’t understand why in this case it had to be different. But. Well. At least New World Grease didn’t really revolve heavily around their so-called ~romance~, and there were many things I loved about this movie. All in all, it was a pretty good movie full of fun, exciting and heartwarming scenes. It breaks my heart that this is probably the last “Thoughts on [insert any piece of Build media]” I’ll ever write. It’s been a fantastic ride!
(this smile though... she kinda looks like she’s the one who wants to talk till morning in a hotel instead................)

Thoughts on episode 33
(There’s a fair amount of complaining this time around. Sorry)
I talked about how in the last episode the characters were allowed to use their brains, so now I’m a bit disappointed because their behavior in this episode was a bit… blaffling? And everything felt —I haven’t used this word since early Build— convenient.
So apparently the Evol Driver was right there all along (!) and it was made by Katsuragi’s dad (this one bit is interesting, mind you). Turns out that the Evol Driver was inside the fridge that Sento built, and for some reason he never bothered to take a look at how this mysterious power source worked. And Stalk demands the Evol Driver, an incredibly dangerous weapon, or else Taizan will be killed. This is pretty much what happened in the previous episode with Kazumin, the farmers and Pandora’s Box. The difference is, Kazumin understood that, as much as he may care about these innocent civilians, Pandora’s Box shouldn’t he handed to people who will use it for evil purposes. It may suck. It may be unfair, even. He let his own friends die for the greater good (they were saved by Rogue afterwards, but Kazumin obviously didn’t know this at first). But it’s the right thing to do. Now in ep 33 Sento and his friends have to save Taizan no matter what and give the Evol Driver to the most dangerous guy in the whole show. Now, I want to believe that Sento tricked him again somehow, but… lol
Sento and his friends save Taizan, give him (and old man who can’t stand a chance against Stalk or… anyone, for that matter) the Evol Driver and expect him to run to where Sawa and Misora are. Fortunately, Grease pops out from nowhere and buys him some time, but can’t avoid the unavoidable: Taizan is murdered and Evolt now has his beloved Evol Driver back. Yay!
This doesn’t mean this episode was bad or that I didn’t enjoy it. Far from it, actually! I get that the story needs to move forward somehow, and this wouldn’t be possible if Evolt(o) didn’t get his driver back – what I don’t like isn’t the outcome itself, but the process to reach it. I kinda want to hope that Evolt(o) knew the driver was there all along and just wanted Sento to find out something about it by himself.
Anyway, there were things I ABSOLUTELY LOVED!! (this is Build, after all. There’s not a single episode I disliked)
GENTOKU! I can’t believe how good his arc is. Sure, he has done some unforgivable, heinous stuff. The thing is, this isn’t about how “gentoku did nothing wrong” (because he did!!), but a story about how Gentoku can “pay the debt for his crimes”, as his father himself put it. Redemption is possible if you choose to do the right thing. This is what happened to Katsuragi-Sento, right? I’m happy that Gentoku will follow the same path as his old buddy… :’) Until not many episodes ago, I was sure that Gentoku would die at some point, but now he has a promise to fulfill and a country to rebuild. But if I’m honest, the best thing this man could do is to turn himself in to the authorities and be judged for his crimes lol
Speaking of redemption: Utsumi! If Gentoku chose to do the right thing, Utsumi is constantly making things worse. He reminds me a lot of how Gentoku used to be, in fact! (a vicious, blinded, and slightly pathetic villain who thinks he’s quite smart, but his plans don’t always succeed). I feel a bit sorry for him because of his little speech in episode 12 about longing for a normal life, but… Utsumi, my dude,,,,, Also, no disrespect towards Misora should ever be allowed 🔪🔪🔪
AND EVOLT(O)!!! Okay, I didn’t like the suit when I saw it in the scans (it looked a tag overdesigned), but it looks fantastic in action. An alien who enjoys German music and speaks Italian! It’s the first time I see a driver having the same voice as its user lol Also, those finishers!! CIAO!!! Even the insert song sounded promising!! (I wished we could hear it properly though). I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!
AND TAIZAN! I will miss this sweet old man so much… We’ve seen many onscreen deaths by now (Kasumi + the crows + Tarou). Kasumi and the crows disappeared into thin air, while Tarou’s death was… kinda amusing lol (still feel VERY sorry for the poor guy). But Taizan? He didn’t turn into sparkling dust and vanish. His last words weren’t “MAMAAAAA!!”. He died in his son’s* arms. A foolish son embracing his father’s lifeless body, a corpse. Gentoku’s reaction was absolutely heartbreaking (props to the actor!!).
*he said a few episodes ago that he didn’t have a son anymore, but of course he did! He had a foolish son who loved him a lot…
Other things:
I wonder what kind of person Mayuzumi might be. Are they a normal politician or do they work for Nanba Industries too?
Katsuragi’s father worked for Nanba Industries! Not that it was unexpected (he was in charge of Pandora’s Box, and where was Pandora’s Box being kept again?), but it’s nice that it’s confirmed. Nanba Industries funded the expedition to Mars, right?
I love how in this episode Sento went from referring to Katsuragi Shinobu as “my father” (chichi/chichioya) to “dad” (tou-san). Oh, Sento…
“His original personality might still be intact” + “You’ve helped me rethink a few things” mmmm...
Why did Evolt bring the bangle to the Earth? (could it be related to the quote above? ^^^^^)
Nascita’s basement used to be Katsuragi’s lab, by any chance?
I guess Banjou will reach Hazard Level 5 in no time at all and that’s why Evolt says he’ll be able to leave Isurugi’s body soon. I wonder how high Misora’s Hazard Level is.
Sento’s face:
So yeah, I complained a lot about this one episode, but I enjoyed a lot of things too. Yay!
