Mateo Hyung Kim (@teoteokim)
DOB: March 1st 2015 Age: 30 years old Hometown: Seoul, South Korea Nicknames: Matt, Matty, Teo S/O: Lily Moss Kids: Issac and Luna Best Friend(s): James Kim Aesthetic: Out of the twins, Mateo was the coolest and most adaptable. Growing up half Latino in South Korea was hard on both Mateo and Mason, however it seemed to affect Mateo less. He wasn't made fun of for his skin colour or his wish-washy accent like his brother, he just seemed to fit in more easily. He always had his brother's back though. If Mason was getting beat on, Mateo made sure he was too. His parents were proud of the two by sticking by each other's sides, but were worried about the long run. When the family moved back to Elena's hometown of Port Hope Ontario, he didn't blend in as easily as they imagined. Instead of Mason getting picked on and being a loner, it was now Mateo. This was a massive ego hit to the little boy and his self-esteem plummeted. Namjoon and Elena didn't know what to do. Either way they were losing. The family made their way back and forth between Korea and Canada, encouraging both cultures in their children's lives. Mateo found comfort however in visiting Colombia with his mama during Summer break. He felt more in touch with his Colombian side and picked up Spanish quite quick. His appa helped teach him too, wanting his wives culture represented in their children as well. As he hit high school, he gained his popularity back and helped him grab his self-image back.

Mason Marcello Kim (@masmarckim)
DOB: March 1st 2015 Age: 30 years old Hometown: Seoul, South Korea Nicknames: Mase, Marce, Cello S/O: Emma Moreno Kids: Haven, Wyatt, and Cohen Best Friend(s): Ellis Christian, Beau Fischer, and Cruz Herring Aesthetic: As previously mentioned, Mason had a hard time when he was still living in Seoul with his family. He looked a lot like his mother growing up, unlike his brother who's looks favoured their father. Once the bullying got way too out of hand, Namjoon mentioned moving back to Canada with Elena and their boys. Elena was a bit weary about it, defending staying in Korea because she had just given birth to her youngest son, Sam, and the fact that their boys had their friends still, and that bullying would happen anywhere. Namjoon went to their sons about the decision, and both were down to start a new life. Elena reluctantly gave in to the move and they moved next door to her Uncle Pedro in Port Hope. Once they were settled in their new life, Mason became friends with Ellis and Beau, Cruz joining later in Grade 6. His parents were happy that he was adjusting well, a bit unlike Mateo. Mason had no problem inviting his brother to hang out with his friends, but Teo felt like a charity case. They fought a lot during this time. Instead of being as close as always, the grew apart. It broke their mother's heart, but they both had their own lives. When Mason entered high school he was desperate to be popular and cool. He dropped Ellis, Beau, and Cruz for a boy named Eddie Lee and his friends. Terrible choice. Mason's grades begun dropping, skipping classes, and drinking at late hours in parks. His parents were worried to death. Each of his family members tried to talk to him, try to understand why he suddenly stopped hanging out with his close friends and started acting up. It didn't get through to him until Mateo got involved. Mateo knew how to get to Mason, its his twin for pete's sake. He began going out with Ellis, Beau, and Cruz again, the only time he would leave late at night was for midnight drives with his buddies. He and Mateo got close again, not nearly as close as they used to be, but better than what it was.

Samuel Pedro Kim (@kimsamuel)
DOB: September 12th 2020 Age: 25 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Sam, Sammy, Pedro S/O: Allie Moon Kids: None Best Friend(s): Dane Vaughn and Macie McGrath Aesthetic: Samuel inherited his father's good looks and unfortunately his clumsiness. He was constantly in and out of the hospital as a child for mindless mistakes. One time when he was around 4 or 5 he was climbing on a climbing wall at the park with his brothers and his father and his foot slipped and he came tumbling down. He didn't cry, or scream, just limped over to the bench his appa was sitting on. Namjoon looked up from his phone and saw an indent on his son's knee and freaked. He almost forgot to grab his twin boys from the swings as he ran over to the car (he drives now I've decided) to drive Sammy to the hospital. Once he got everyone there, he was informed that his baby boy needed surgery to fix the bone he messed up. Joon was so terrified to call his wife who was visiting family with their daughter. She was so close to hopping on the next flight but asked to talk to her baby first. It was sort of funny to her that their son was so chill about it. No tears at all. "Ah mi hijo, you hurt you knee baby? Are you feeling okay darling? So clumsy huh?" All Sam did was giggle (probably from the laughing gas they gave him) and shake his head yes or no to his mama's questions. It eased Namjoon's mind that his wife was okay now and not in a rush to get home, she trusted his parenting skills. That whole weekend was spent with him and his boys on the couch watching t.v. and eating junk. It was actually a great bonding experience with his sons. As Samuel got older he got a bit better with his clumsiness and was extremely smart, top in his classes. He was fluent in both Korean, English, and Spanish by the time he was 4 and tended to switch back and forth on accident as a child. He later learned French as well and learned to stick to one language in a conversation. It was the cutest thing when he was younger though and went viral after his father posted a video of him swapping words in a talk with his mama. Sam was also the first to not have a Seoul accent, being the only one born in Canada out of his brothers.

Sofia Hana Kim (@itssofie)
DOB: December 21st 2023 Age: 22 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Sof, Sofie S/O: Jayden Bishop Kids: None Best Friend(s): Emery Fuller and Mia Mueller Aesthetic: Sofia was her father's pride and joy. As much as he adored his boys, there was just something about his baby girl. Sofie was copy and paste of Elena, and that's what Joonie was seeing in her. Sofie had him and her older brothers wrapped around her finger since she was born. They all made sure she was safe at all times. The amount of nights that Elena would wake without her husband by her side and would walk down the hall and find all of her boys watching her daughter sleep was astonishing. When Namjoon and Elena first started dating she would call him 'Mi Vida', my life in Spanish. This nickname he passed on to his daughter before she was born. Sofia was extremely stubborn, like her mother, and hated being wrong and getting told no. Which wasn't often from her appa, but her mom had no problem disciplining her, knowing her husband wouldn't. It was common once Sof got older for screaming matches at dinner between Lena and Sofia because Joon didn't know how to disciple his girl. It was hard but he knew he had to. Sofia started ignoring her dad after he told her no for the first time. It broke his heart, but Elena made sure he understood he did the right thing. She got over it eventually and grew because of it, however she is still as stubborn and spoiled as she ever was. Loves her family so much it's crazy. She knows she wouldn't be able to live without them. When her younger siblings were born she was always there to help her parents out, adoring the new additions to their family with her whole heart. Isabela especially looked up to her the most, though Antonio was the closest with her.

Antonio Alejandro Kim (@neo.jandro.kim26)
DOB: May 26th 2026 Age: 19 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Neo S/O: No One Kids: None Best Friend(s): Davis Munoz Aesthetic: The most whitewashed out of all the kids. He came home from kindergarten calling his parents mom and dad and Elena put him in a time out. It was strange to everyone because they didn't really speak English at home. When Elena was pregnant with the twins her and Namjoon agreed to only ever speak Korean and Spanish with their kids because they wanted them to be fluent, understand their parents when they messed up a bit. Of course their babies still learned English, at home with books and shows sometimes, but also at school and play dates, however it was really important to them that they know their native languages. Antonio hated his name and would go by Neo his whole time at school and would write his name 'Neo Kim' instead of 'Kim Antonio'. It was as if he was embarrassed of his parents. He wasn't, but it was just easier to him if he was the same as everyone else. Antonio loved helping out in the kitchen with his mom and older sister. They taught him how to make traditional Colombian food and Korean food and he was so excited to brag about it at dinner and school. He once showed his meals off at school lunch and everyone wanted to try some and became his usual show and tell item. He would come to school on Monday with anything you can think of; Arepas, Gimbap, Tamales, Tteokbokki, etc. All in bulk for his classmates to try. He learned a lot from these impromptu cooking classes and became known in their small town. He still cooks to this day and took over the roll of family meals without his mama and nuna.

Isabela Mariposa Kim (@bela.mariposa)
DOB: October 17th 2028 Age: 17 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Bella, Belle, Belly, Isa, Izzy S/O: Marcus Arellano Kids: None Best Friend(s): Carlos Lucas and Rylie Adkins Aesthetic: Coolest little girl ever. She always had the best of manners but she knew how to stand up for herself. She adored her parents, I mean she was their little mariposa, so Joonie calls her. Her full name is Kim Isabela Mariposa. Isabela was her maternal great grandmother's name and it meant a lot to her mama that she was named after her. When Joon and Laney had their babies, they knew that they were going to have one Spanish name and one Korean name, however the rule was broken for both Antonio and Isabela per Namjoon's request. Antonio's middle is Alejandro after Lena's late sister Alejandra, and Mariposa was the first word Joon learned in Spanish and it became his nickname for her while she was still in her mother's stomach. When Isabela started school she started finding herself correcting people in the pronunciation of her name. It was typical because she knows how her mama says it and it sounded so weird with a 'z' sound to her. When she was in Grade 3 her best friend Rylie Adkins convinced her to perform at their talent show together. She sang Boys Boys Boys by Lady Gaga and it killed her family. For the past two weeks she refused to tell them what she was going to sing and for their 8 year old daughter to come and sing that song of all, they couldn't help but laugh. Her principal pulled her off stage but she kept the microphone and continued singing her little heart out. She joined choir a little while after that and was always praised on her soft voice. It was very flowy and she loved showing off. It was a talent she kept to herself, but she posted some original songs online when she was 15 and has been gaining traction since.

Carmelo Dae Kim (@meloyelo.kim)
DOB: February 20th 2032 Age: 13 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Carm, Carmy, Melo S/O: No One Kids: None Best Friend(s): Song Jung-hee Aesthetic: When Carmelo was born he was very sick. He was stuck in the NICU for about two weeks before being let home to his family. Luckily his twin sister was alright and healthy, but it made his parents very weary of their youngest son. They were terrified to let him do anything in fear that he would go into an asthma attack. He had a hard time breathing at night and slept with an air tube until he was 4. He hated it and just continued to rip it off in his sleep so his appa or mama had to sit and watch him at night, until one night Elena let him keep it off for a bit and noticed he was fine without it now. Namjoon yelled at her. It scared him and he couldn't believe she let Carmy do that. If you couldn't already guess, Namjoon was the most protective. Carmelo hated going to school because he was scared people would make fun of him for stepping out of gym class or recess because it would prick up his breathing issues. One day in Grade 2, when Carm was sitting on the grass watching everyone play he noticed another boy sitting a little ways away from him, alone. His mother would've had his head if she was here and saw him ignoring him so he decided to go introduce himself. The boy had thin brimmed glasses and looked sad. When Carmelo said hello, the kid didn't understand what he was saying at first and looked away. Carm sat down next to him anyways. Started talking his ear off all recess. This time in Korean. His parents harassing him to learn was paying off, he made a friend. The boy's name was Song Jung-hee, and he had just moved here with his mom and big sister only a month ago. They started hanging out every day and having sleepovers whenever they could. Jung-hee's mom was single and working a few jobs so he spent a lot of time at the Kim's. Sofia used to babysit him and his sister all the time, even picking them up from school when she got her license. Jung-hee's sister was actually really close with Isabela when they were sat next together in class that year. They became apart of the family.

Arianna Jae Kim (@ariajae)
DOB: February 20th 2032 Age: 13 years old Hometown: Port Hope, Canada Nicknames: Ari, Aria S/O: No One Kids: None Best Friend(s): Song Hana and Juliet Lynch Aesthetic: Aria is very friendly. She can make friends with a worm if she wanted to. She never learned not to talk to strangers because she has so much faith in the humans of the world. If you asked anyone in her class they would say that they're friends with her. Arianna always has something to say. So when she met Hana in Grade 4, she knew they would be the bestest of friends. She encouraged her to join her dance classes with her best friend Juliet, but Hana's mother couldn't afford it. Best believe she went to her mama about the problem at hand. They brainstormed ways that she could help pay for her classes all night. Even lying in bed with Elena, she couldn't shut her brain off. Ari did bake sales, car washes, lemonade stands, even singing on her neighbourhood street with her dad's baseball cap on the ground to collect any change she could. In the end she made $102, and went to her parents so excited. They didn't have the heart to tell her that it would barely cover the cost of the annual amount they pay for her, so she gave the money to Song Haeun, Hana's mom, and Namjoon paid the difference for her. Hana, Arianna, and Juliet were unstoppable in the class. Watching the girls do their ballet recital was something everyone looked forward to each year. Even the rest of the boys flew out to watch, it was a big deal to Ari. They are all still friends even now.

Why the group post? The shows are no longer interconnected, become separated, They used to acknowledge each other's events and have random social appearances at Molly, but not anymore. And the linking characters and stories are gone .
Time to recreate the shared universal again

*Long Sigh*
TL;DR - Why do Tracy (Hailey) and Jesse (Jay) from Chicago PD get so much attention for no reason? What’s the matter with other characters/actors?
Listen guys, I get it. I understand. Y’all love Tracy and Jesse. But come on - one post on Instagram and I see it several times?
It isn’t right that I get more posts about Jesse, Tracy, Jay, Hailey or Upstead (and whatever their ship name is for their actors) in general than for things I actually care about in Chicago PD. I am glad they’re living life and having fun and being friends or whatever they decide but I just don’t understand the hype.
Shipping characters is great. Actors, alright, as long as it’s not pushed onto them or pressuring them in any way. But I mean… where’s the love for everyone else? I rarely see appreciation posts for Elias Koteas (Al), Jon Seda (Antonio), Patrick John Flueger (Adam), Marina Squerciati (Kim), LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin), Amy Morton (Trudy) or any of the other actors/characters aside from Jason Beghe/Hank Voight. Everything else under the Chicago PD tag is Jay/Hailey stuff…
I guess I’m just thinking it’s not fair that Jay/Hailey get all of this attention when we haven’t even gotten a gif set of the S11 finale with Hank and Al (except when I asked myself and @andgry4 made me a very beautiful one). But I had to ask!!! Everyone just cared about Tracy’s departure from the show and said it wasn’t enough when the whole episode was about her. :/
The show is about Hank and always has been. He’s the main character, period. How does everyone hate him? I love his complex character. Not to mention how much better and complex his character is than anyone in Chicago Fire. (Not bashing the actors, but the characters themselves.)
I personally never cared for Hailey and I understand loving one character a lot, but when Tracy/Jesse post something on Instagram, it’s a big thing? Why? Who cares? And why do I have to see it four times per day with 0 other posts about anything else PD under the Chicago PD tag? (The Instagram post wasn’t even about Chicago PD, they weren’t on set or anything, so why tag it that??)
I guess I’m just wondering what makes them so special over anyone else from the show? :/ It is obnoxious that so many people love them so much and “aren’t watching anymore” or are “finally free” because Tracy and Jesse left. If you didn’t like the show, why watch in the first place? I like Jon Seda, but I only watched one season of La Brea because it got kinda boring to me. I wasn’t “finally free” of it, I just stopped watching - simple as that. If you don’t like the show, quit watching. I don’t care who’s on it. It could be my favorite actor and yet if it wasn’t interesting, I wouldn’t watch it…
It’s incomprehensible to me why they’re so special when they’re not even on the show anymore anyways… I get the fanfics and don’t mind them. But things like this? One post on Instagram that they’re being friends? Crazy how much attention the fandom gives to this instead of anything else Chicago PD related. 🤷‍♀️

Would the Chicago PD characters have tattoos?
This is all my own thoughts and headcanons, lol and just pure fun.
Alvin Olinsky: He would. He'd definitely get something to honor Lexi after she died. Like her birth flower or name or something. Al probably also had like a back tattoo of some sort that nobody, except Meredith and probably Hank and Trudy know about. Like a snake.
Trudy Platt: She would. But like only one tattoo and it's across her ribs and that similar to Al, nobody knows about it and she never told Randall until their first time having sex together. Trudy smirked while Randall looked at it.
Hank Voight: No. But he thought about it after Camille died and than again after Justin. But he never figured out an idea that he thought would truly honor them. Hank, Trudy and Al almost got a matching tattoo drunk more than once tho.
Antonio Dawson: Yes. He has a lot. Antonio's very much a "every major (and sometimes minor) life event deserves a new tattoo" person. He definitely got Eva and Diego's names and birthdays tattooed like three days after they were born.
Erin Lindsay: YES. Like 18th birthday she got her first tattoo kinda gal. Partially to rebel against Hank and Camille, and partially to finally have control over her own life.
Kevin Atwater: Yes. Several. Mostly on his legs though he has a few on his chest. Kevin has a thigh tattoo as well.
Adam Ruzek: Yep, absolutely. Similar to Erin, he got a few when he was young. Probably drunk and got some dumb tattoos and regrets them sometimes. More recently though he got something for Makayla and Kim. Like their names or flowers or something cheesy. Adam also definitely has a banana tattooed on his arm for Al. 100%.
Kim Burgess: She didn't for a while, but after she adopted Makayla, Kim probably got like the adoption date or Makayla's birthday tattooed. Kim probably also did that one trend, where people have their partners/kids draw them hearts to get that tattooed. She definitely did that with Adam and Makayla.
Hailey Upton: She has like some small flowers on her shoulder or ankle. Hailey and Jay also got matching tattoos of the date they got married. Hailey got hers covered up after the divorce, but she always knows it's there.
Jay Halstead: The matching one with Hailey. Jay never covered it up there and it's a constant reminder of what he lost. He also has a small stupid one he got matching with Mouse one night, that while he'll tell people he regrets getting, he secretly loves.
Mouse: He has the one matching with Jay. Mouse also has a small Mouse tattooed on his arm.

Hank Voight Oneshot
Synopsis: When Hank is injured in an explosion, the team comes to the hospital to comfort him, each in their own way.
Requested by: @andgry4
Hank had always gone first. That was his policy. He couldn’t wait for the bomb squad. He had to go in.
“Stay here, everyone stay here!” He commanded. As he met Erin’s eyes, he could tell she didn’t want him to go. She wanted to protest, but Hank’s look kept her in place.
“Hank,” Erin started, but Hank didn’t care. He slowly pushed open the door.
“Everyone back up,” he said, looking back to Erin, Antonio, and the rest of intelligence. All of them were ready to jump in with Hank, to literally ride or die. But he wouldn’t have it. Reluctantly, all of them backed up into the street. Hank nodded and looked back into the house, to the woman’s screams. He let out a breath, then stepped inside.
He knew every step could be his last. Turning on his flashlight, he walked through the house, slow and careful. He checked every step before moving through, toward the begging woman. Every step made his heart beat faster, but somehow he couldn’t find the woman. “Where are you?!”
The woman didn’t answer him directly, continuing to beg for help. “Please, please help me! Please, I’m over here!”
Hank, although calm on the outside, had adrenaline pumping through his veins. He couldn’t see her anywhere. He moved by sound, getting to the middle of the house. The sound was the loudest, but looking around with his flashlight, he didn’t see her.
The sound then stopped, and some mechanical clicking could be heard. Hank looked down, and saw a small tape player with several wires sticking out of it, leaning to some barrels.
“Shit,” he mumbled, then turned and ran toward the front of the house as it began rapidly beeping. He was nearly there before it exploded, and he was pushed out onto the grass, debris landing with him, fire everywhere. The last thing he remembered was a blaze and hearing several voices yelling his name.
“So how long?” Hank huffed. He hated hospitals in general, mostly because Camille spent her last few days in one.
“A week,” Will Halstead replied. “I’m sorry, Sergeant, but we need to keep you here at least that long to make sure no complications arise. And to make sure you rest. I know if I let you leave, you’ll go right back to work.”
“Damn right I will,” Hank replied, shaking his head. “I’m fine.”
“You got blown up and had to have surgery. You’re not ‘fine,’ you’re recovering.”
Hank huffed again, crossing his arms despite the pain it caused him, even with the medicine in his system. “Alright, fine then.”
“Good,” Will replied. “Now rest. Your body needs it.”
Hank grumbled in reply, but let his eyes close and his body rest, as suggested. He did need it, despite his protests and tough exterior. He’d never admit it, though, as he relaxed into the bed, listening to the steady beeping of the heart monitor beside him. It wasn’t too comforting, but it was constant.
Three days in, Hank was nearly restless. His body definitely wasn’t ready to leave, but his mind was. He tried too hard to push himself beyond what he was physically capable of, despite protests from all the doctors. They even sent in a shrink to talk to him, which he refused. Not to mention the hospital food was not great. Everyone had been in and out to see him once or twice, but only briefly since they were working the case. They’d comforted him and let him know that Trudy had taken his place for a few days until the case was solved and the perp was behind bars.
Hank wouldn’t want any other sergeant to step into his shoes except Trudy, so it brought him some comfort to know his unit was in good hands. Nevertheless, he begged for every detail anyone would spare when they visited him.
Finally, when the case was solved, Alvin came into the room to give Hank the news. He sat beside him, handing him a burger he had snuck in his coat pocket. He also handed Hank a small bag of fries from his coat pocket. “We got him. He won’t hurt anyone else.”
“And the woman?” Hank asked, his mouth already full from the delicious burger.
“She was already dead. The recording you heard had been taken when she was first kidnapped.”
Hank sighed as his heart sank. “Damn it.”
Alvin nodded, letting the silence wash over them as they both ate.
After a few moments, Hank spoke again. “How’s everyone else taking it?”
Alvin shrugged and met his eyes. “I think better than you are.”
“I got blown up for a dead girl. Of course I wanted to save her. If I knew she was already dead-“
“If we knew she was dead, you wouldn’t have gone into that house and gotten your ass blown to smithereens.”
Hank glared at Alvin, but knew it was a joke. He rolled his eyes as he finished his meal, crumpling up the paper and tossing it across the room into the garbage can. “Thanks,” he said, shooting Al a pointed look.
“You’re welcome,” Al replied, standing up. “Everyone wants to see you today, yaknow? Since the case is closed.”
“Yeah,” Hank grumbled. He welcomed the company, seeing as he was going insane just sitting there, but hated that they had to come see him because he was stuck in the room. He was frustrated.
“I’ll bring some whisky later.”
“Thanks,” Hank replied, nodding to his closest friend as he left the room. Hank sighed, readjusting in the bed and sitting up, despite the pain it caused him. He groaned, leaning back just as Erin came into the room.
“Already trying to leave?”
Hank cracked a small smile. Erin always made him smile. “I’ve been trying to leave since they brought me here.”
“I know,” she replied. “Last time I was here, you were chomping at the bit. Looks like you mellowed out a little.”
“No, just got tired.”
“Hank Voight? Tired? You must be getting old.”
Hank rolled his eyes at her, but she took his hand. He looked down as both of her hands engulfed his. “Old? That means you’re getting old too.”
Erin laughed a little, shaking her head. “You know… when you came out that door, and the whole thing blew, I… I saw your body fly. I thought you were dead.”
Hank looked her over. “Takes a lot more than that to kill me.”
“We lost Camille six years ago. I just… assumed the worst. It’s like all the feelings from her death came back to me all over again.”
Hank squeezed her hand. “Now you know how I feel about you when you throw yourself headfirst into danger.”
Erin laughed dryly, using one hand to wipe her face, tears spilling over. “Yeah, well, I’m thirty years younger than you.”
“That many?”
“I’m glad you’re finding this amusing.”
Hank smiled again. It made him happy to be around her. From day one, Erin has cheered him up, even while at work. She filled part of the gap Camille had left in his soul.
.
After Erin had left, Hank was tired, more so than he expected. He realized maybe it was good that he was forced to rest in the hospital. Otherwise, he might be on his office couch right now, napping. He closed his eyes and listened to the steady beeping once more, coaxing him into a light slumber.
He didn’t open his eyes again until he heard the door to his room slide open. Drawing in a breath, he opened his eyes and blinked a few times. Antonio walked in and to his bedside. “Hey, how are you doing?”
“Fine,” Hank replied with a shrug. “They told me to rest for the week.”
“Yeah,” Toni replied. “I wish I could rest for the whole week.”
“No you don’t,” Hank replied, looking to him. “That’s why you’re part of my unit.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Antonio said with a shrug and a soft smile. “That means if you’re anything like me, you’re going stir crazy.”
“You read my mind.” Hank shrugged.
Antonio hummed and patted his shoulder. “Then that also means you’re exhausted and should rest.”
“You think so?” Hank stated, sarcasm dripping from his words. He didn’t want to rest and was frustrated he had to. “So who’s running the unit for the next four days?”
“I guess Platt, loosely,” he replied with a shrug. “I’ll make sure everyone stays on topic, though. Don’t worry.”
“I can always count on you.”
Antonio smiled slightly, then pulled something from his pocket. “Oh, here, Diego wrote you a get well note.”
Hank hummed and took the folded paper from Antonio, inspecting it, then opening it up to read it. It was short, but sweet.
Dear Sgt. Voight,
I hope you feel better soon. You need to keep saving people like me from the bad guys. Thanks for helping my dad and me.
Sincerely,
Diego Dawson
Hank smiled up at Antonio. “Tell him thanks.”
“Sure,” Antonio replied. “He couldn’t spell ‘Sergeant,’ so he used the abbreviation.” He laughed, then patted Hank’s shoulder again. “Get some rest. Seriously.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Hank replied, waving his hand dismissively as Antonio left. He chuckled softly and set the card on the table beside him. Then, he allowed himself to close his eyes once more.

The next day, Kim was the first one to visit, bright and early. “Hey, Sarge,” she said softly as the door pushed open. “How are you feeling?”
Hank looked up, having already been awake. “I’m alright. Shouldn’t you be at work?”
“Oh, we cleared it with Platt. I hope that’s alright.”
Hank looked at if he was thinking about it for a moment before nodding. “Alright, I guess so.”
“Good, cause I brought breakfast. Al told me what you like.” She pulled out a small paper bag from beneath her coat. “Sausage, egg, and cheese bagel.”
Hank smiled, taking the bag of food from her. “Thanks, Burgess.”
“Well, I mean, you were there for me when I got shot. Only fair I’m here for you now.”
Hank nodded, looking at her as he ate. She also had a bagel sandwich, taking a seat beside him to eat with him. “How have you been? Really, I mean, adjusting to intelligence is a hard move. Everything been good with Olinsky?”
“Yeah, Sarge. It’s all really great. Thank you.” Kim smiled brightly. “Although, can I confess? There’s just one thing that’s bothering me about working here.”
Hank raised a brow, but nodded. “Go ahead.”
“I just really hated seeing you blown up, you know? Is that going to be a regular occurrence?”
Hank laughed softly, shaking his head at the young officer he’d recently taken into his unit. “I dunno, Burgess. It’s never happened before. Is you getting shot going to be something I should worry about?”
“Gosh, I hope not,” she replied, shaking her head with a smile. “I never want to do that again.”
“Yeah, I can understand why. Hospitals suck.”
“I know, right!” Kim said, nodding. “Like, I’m just supposed to lay there all day?”
Hank smiled. “You know, they say doctors make the worst patients, but I doubt that. I think cops are by far the worst.”
“Yeah, me too.”
The two of them chatted for a bit longer, Kim finishing her sandwich, then pulling out another bag. “Here, take one.” She opened the bag and held it out to Hank.
When he peered inside, there were two donuts. Hank smiled and took one out, a chocolate frosted one with sprinkles, leaving Kim the strawberry frosted one with sprinkles. “Cheers,” he said, holding out the donut.
“Cheers,” Kim mirrored, pressing her donut to his for a moment before they both ate.

Later on that day, Hank was practically restless, and he gave the nurses hell for it. He wanted out. He needed to leave the room and the bed. When the door to his room slid open, he sighed heavily, looking to see which nurse had come to calm him that time. He was surprised to see Adam and Kevin walk through the door, Kevin pushing a wheelchair.
“Please tell me that’s for me.”
“That’s right, Boss. We’ve come to temporarily release you from your captivity.”
“Thank goodness,” Hank said, already sitting up and swinging his legs over the side of the bed. Kevin and Adam helped him up, which he verbally refused, but physically needed. When they got him settled, Kevin pushed the wheelchair as Adam walked alongside them.
“Just a few more days, then you’re out of here, Boss.”
“Can’t come soon enough, Ruzek.”
“I hear that, Sarge,” Kevin chimed in. “If it were me, I would’ve run away by now.”
“Kev, shut up, the nurses said not to give him any ideas.” Adam laughed and shook his head. “They told us you’ve been giving them hell all day.”
“Yeah, that’s why we bargained to get you a wheelchair. As long as you stay in the wheelchair.”
Hank hummed in thought, then nodded. “Fine. Only because I know if I run now, Maggie will strap me to that damn bed.”
“If you ran now, Sarge, we’d be your wingmen.” Kevin laughed earning another small slap from Adam.
Adam smiled. “You gotta rest, though. That way you can take intelligence back.”
“Yeah, how was today without me?” Hank looked up at Adam and Kevin behind him. The two looked at one another, then both shrugged in unison.
“It was… something. Let’s just say it’s a good thing we don’t have a case right now,” Adam said, seemingly disappointed. “Look, it’s all fine and good, Boss, but without you, we don’t really have a structure. I mean, Antonio stepped up to fill in your shoes, but… they’re big shoes to fill.”
Kevin nodded a little in affirmation. “Yeah, I think he could do it, eventually, but he’s not you, and we’re expecting you from him. It’s just not fair. He was set up for failure.”
“So he doesn’t get the same respect you do,” Adam continued. “And it causes issues between all of us. Platt tried to help out, and it did help some, but she’s not you either. We followed her orders because we had to. She outranks us.”
Hank sighed softly as he listened to the two go on about the day. He wanted to leave before, but the urge was now magnified by a thousand percent. He needed to run his unit. He didn’t want to sit in the hospital, knowing they were in turmoil and therefore in danger if they were out in the field.
When the silence overtook the three of them, Adam chimes in first. “You okay, Boss?”
“Yeah,” Hank mumbled. He was discouraged and overall tired, tired of lying in bed and doing nothing, but what else could he do? He doubted Will would let him out of the hospital, let alone clear him to go back to work. His body was tired from moving so much that day. His mind was tired from fighting. He was just tired.
Adam and Kevin seemed to pick up on this and helped Hank back into his bed once arriving back at his room. They said their goodbyes and parted ways, letting Hank rest. He took the opportunity to close his eyes, drifting off again.
.
Later that night, Jay came in, Mouse in tow. The two of them brought Hank some dinner, takeout from a Chinese place he liked. Hank thanked them, looking between the two of them. “How was today?” He asked, chomping at the bit to be back.
Jay shrugged. “It was fine, I guess. Not the same without you.”
Mouse nodded in agreement, though he was a man of few words outside of when he was working. “I agree, Sergeant.”
Hank hummed as he picked at the food. “Can you talk to your brother and tell him to let me out of here?” He met Jay’s eyes. Although his tone was lighter and joking, his eyes were serious, a heavy weight on his shoulders. It was as if they could physically see what was weighing Hank down - being cooped up in a room and seeing his unit spiral without him. He took care of his unit and seeing them like this wasn’t right in his mind.
Jay nodded. “Look, I’ll see what I can do. But you have to stop fighting the nurses. April and Maggie are ready to slip sedatives in your IV.”
Hank laughed dryly. He didn’t care anymore, in fact, he wished they would do he wouldn’t have to spend his waking moments waiting to leave the hospital.
Mouse looked over Hank, then looked to Jay. “How much longer?”
“Three days,” Hank groaned, putting his hands to his head and leaning back on the bed. “All I’ve done is lay here. I’m going insane.”
Jay moved out of the room to talk to his brother, to see if there was any way Hank could be discharged earlier. Mouse sat down awkwardly beside Hank’s bed. “Look, you should eat. You need to eat to get better.”
“I don’t need a lecture on how to get better. I just need to do it, now.”
Mouse shrugged a little. “Look, I’ve known a lot of guys like you in the army. It’s tough. I get it.”
“You’re not the one lying in this damned bed, Mouse.”
“You’re right,” he replied with a shrug. “But I’ve been there. You’ll get through it.”
Hank huffed. “Be honest with me. How bad was it today?”
Mouse met Hank’s eyes, then sighed. “Pretty bad.”
Hank leaned back in bed, closing his eyes. “See, I need to be out there.”
Mouse thought for a moment, then shrugged. “Does a mama bird carry her babies to teach them how to fly?”
“What?” Hank asked, looking to Mouse with a cocked eyebrow.
“Well,” Mouse said, leaning forward in the chair. “You see, a mama bird doesn’t do that. She pushes them from the nest and lets them fly on their own. It might take some getting used to, and they might fall down, but the baby birds learn to fly.”
Hank blinked, taken aback. “Are you… comparing me to a mother bird?”
“Alright, look, that’s not the point. The point is Intelligence needs to figure out how to work without you, so that someday in the future, the far future, hopefully, it can run without you.”
Hank looked over Mouse, then slowly nodded. “I guess…” he mumbled.
Jay came back in after a moment of silence between the two of them. “Hey, Will said it’s a no-go. Sorry, Sarge. I tried my best. Even bargained.”
“Thanks,” Hank replied, glancing to Jay. “It’s alright. It’s only… three more days.” Hank sighed once more. Of course, he was already halfway done, but that didn’t mean the last three days wouldn’t be a slow drag.
“Try to stay optimistic, Sarge. Call us if you need anything, alright?” Jay walked over and patted Hank’s shoulder to give him comfort before the two of them left.
Hank laid awake for a while, thinking about everything Mouse had said. He mused, his mind wandering to other things, then he eventually fell asleep.
The next two days came and went without much event. The Intelligence members came and went, bringing food and small gifts to help Hank not go crazy, like magazines and newspapers and whatever else they could get their hands on.
Finally, the last day arrived. Hank was getting ready to get discharged. Although Will didn’t clear him for field work, he told him he could return to strict desk duty. That didn’t bother Hank much, knowing it was only temporary. He just wanted to be behind his desk - period. Even if it meant he napped back there. Although he had gotten much stronger in the last two days, he was still in a lot of pain, and he was very often tired, even though he hadn’t been doing much.
Hank was buttoning up his shirt when someone came into the room. Who stood before him, but Trudy Platt, of course. Hank smiled slightly to her. “Trudy, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Well, I heard you’re getting out of here. Figured you’d need a ride seeing as you came here in an ambo.”
“That’s a pretty good assumption.” He leaned on the bed as he walked, Trudy moving over and offering her arm, which Hank took. He had been offered a cane, but refused it, though he needed it.
“So, you’re cleared for desk duty?”
“It’s something,” he replied with a shrug. “I’ll have Mouse to keep me company in the office.”
Trudy nodded as she helped him out to her vehicle and into the passenger seat. “I’m just downstairs too, if you need me, Hank. I know you don’t like to ask for help, but I’m here for anything you need.”
“I know. Thanks,” he replied, nodding to her and looking down at the cane that was leaning against the passenger seat. “Damn it, they gave it to you?”
“Yep,” Trudy said, closing the door then getting into the driver’s seat to take Hank back to 21. “Can’t escape it that easily.”
“It’s embarrassing.”
“Hey, when I got shot in the ass, I used a cane for three months. I was thirty-something.”
“Yeah, I remember, you milked it every time I saw you.”
Trudy nodded. “And now’s your payback. You’re welcome.”
“Very funny.”
.
When they arrived back at the district, Hank used the cane and Trudy’s arm to get himself up the many stairs that were between him and his office. It took much longer than it usually did, but he was able to make it. The whole unit stood and clapped when Hank walked in, Hank waving his free hand to dismiss them. Then, he walked into his office and sat down, Trudy making sure he was comfortable. He spoke a soft ‘thanks’ to her, making a mental note to get her a gift later. The rest of Intelligence gathered in the doorway to Hank’s office, watching him as he got comfortable at his desk.
Hank looked up at all of them, then nodded. “What’s next?”
