Day 6 of @spaus-week 's challenge

"Let others wage war, you, happy Austria, marry!" Was the political strategy of the Habsburgs, and marry did the House of Austria! Infamously, scandalously, sensationally. A mangled wreath of a family tree. We all know this horror story. And we all know the bitter end.

After Emperor Charles V&I divided his Spanish and Austrian inheritance ((also gained through his parents' and grandparents' marriages)) to his descendants and those of his younger brother Ferdinand I respectively, the Habsburg dynasty split into two branches. The Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs notoriously intermarried for generations, right up till Charles II of Spain whose heirless death in 1700 sparked the War of the Spanish Succession. The inbreeding and this informal Latin motto behind it has been blamed to hell and back for their implosion, for the physical ugliness that ran in this royal bloodline. But it is not to say the Habsburgs never went to war, nor that dynastic marriage was a political strategy unique to them! But they were, if anything, bloody successful at it seeing how they did rule half of Europe for 200 years, and then a lot of it in the Austrian line for another 200. Before anyone figured out inbreeding was bad it was considered a privilege to marry into the Habsburgs, with Louis XV claiming that Louis XVI's betrothal to Marie Antoinette was marrying the "Daughter of the Caesars", and Napoleon Bonaparte infamously ditching Josephine for Marie Louise. Charles II was a poor sod who took the fall and the mugs were wretched from the same ugly gene being passed around countless times*, but they did wear power and privilege well.

Charles V & Ferdinand I's joint portrait based on that propaganda woodcut, behind them the colours of the Habsburg flag.

The Spanish branch, comprising Charles V & I's descendants, is represented with a black background, and the Austrian branch, comprising Ferdinand I's descendants, gold, both colours pulled from their flag, a dynasty intertwined but split in two.

Round frames denote that the individual had no heirs.

Only the most influential ruler on both sides, the King of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor, are represented as framed portraits, explaining Archduke Charles II's unframed depiction.

The unconventional placement of Charles II of Spain and Emperor Rudolf II's nameplates are a nod to their queerness: their intersexuality and bisexuality respectively.

Ferdinand III's portrait is lopsided because of the losses of the 30 Years War.

collaboration spotlight — VoicePlay B-team live performance at MVMCP 2017

Because the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party residency at Disney World entails nearly 100 performances — 4 shows per night, 4 nights a week, for 6 weeks — it's necessary to have replacement singers who can step in when someone needs a night off. (If nothing else, Layne always took his birthday off. Let alone the possibility of someone getting sick or injured.) For the 2017 season, VoicePlay's primary backups were their buddies in fellow a cappella group Echo.

While they usually only needed one or two substitutes at a time, there was one night early in the run this year when VoicePlay was double-booked. So while they suffered through airport security hell on their way to the Kettering A Cappella Festival in Ohio, Echo took to the Tomorrowland stage in their stead, and did a great job performing the usual set. Give it up for the B-team!

Trivia:

Antonio had subbed for Layne several times before, particularly during his paternity leave the previous summer, but this is the first (and only) time I've found of him standing in for Geoff on bass.

Deejay has collaborated with VoicePlay on many full-length videos and shorts in the past few years, starting during his hiatus from the Hamilton tour during the pandemic lockdown.

Joey and Deejay are both alumni of the "Beetlejuice Revue / Mashup" show at Universal Studios, having performed alongside Geoff, Kathy, Tony Wakim, and J.None during their tenures. Both guys had played the Wolfman, and Joey also performed as Dracula.

Joey has since appeared in episodes of PattyCake's Villains Lair series as LaFou, which he'd originated in their "Beauty and the Bieber" video earlier in the year.

Tony Flaherty appeared in PattyCake's "Avengers: Thunder" video as Peter Quill / Star-Lord the following summer.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party 2016 — VoicePlay live performances

After a successful season the prior year, VoicePlay returned to their holiday residency at Disney World for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party to close out 2016.

Since the guys were close to announcing Tony's official departure from the group, these performances were the beginning of the ensuing year's pattern of alternating between two substitute baritones – Erik Winger and J.None. Other backups included beatboxers Max Herskovitz and Antonio Fernandez (who had filled in for Layne on previous occasions), and even the brief return of former 4:2:Five tenor Danny Alan when Eli needed a night off.

About half of these recordings are individual songs from one night, but they're all equally entertaining.

Trivia

Max and Antonio had both stepped in for Layne during his paternity leave over the summer.

Eli had met J.None the year before when they both subbed with Danny's group, The Edge Effect, during a cruise gig.‡ The two connected over music and video games, and Eli then suggested him to the other guys when they knew Tony wouldn't be performing in this residency. ‡ The Orlando a cappella scene really is tight-knit.

The seasonal lyrics in "Christmas Don't Be Late" this year were: ♫ "Want some chocolate by the ton." ♫ "Front row seats to see Rogue One." ♫

J.None definitely proved that he fits in with VoicePlay's style of silliness during the intro banter for "My Two Front Teeth" at a late-season performance. 😆 🐟
