Laudna didn't take the opportunity lightly. A massive, hollowed out tree trunk. The bark looks scorched, the entirety of the tree burnt from the inside out. Laudna had been tracking the storm for weeks from her current temporary home, had watched as lightning lashed the tallest reaching trees before thunder boomed out across the forest.

Best get to it, wouldn't do to wait and get caught out by those scavengers. Delilahs voice slices in, between the flash of the lightning and the quiet of the thunder. Laudna huffs, nodding to no one before she claws her way up the thick trunk. Laudna growls as she climbs, her features sharpening as she throws a leg over a thick branch.

"That isn't likely. You know they can't get here fast enough to see me." Laudna leans forward on the branch, her ankles hooked underneath to keep her balance, as she starts to snap charred and burnt twigs free. "They won't even notice that I was here at all."

You're rather confident today dear. Delilah's voice is clearly amused. It's a confusing departure from her usual simpering superiority, though Laudna doesn't mention it. Laudna works efficiently, slowly climbing her way to the very peak of the tree, snapping off suitably lightning-scorched branches as she goes. She pockets them as she goes, careful as she puts them into her newly crafted bag.

It's only as Laudna finishes up, leaving a few branches for the birds and squirrels to perch on, that she realizes the opportunity she's stumbled into. Total isolation, at least for the next few days before foragers and scavengers from the nearby villages start searching for the valuable components the storm left behind. Laudna glances around from her vantage point, taking in the rises and falls of the trees all around her. She looks down, heart in her throat at the dizzying height, her hands scratching against the bark as she steadies herself. She only thinks for a moment, tapping a long-nailed finger against the branch between her legs before moving.

Feather fall fills her body like a sigh. It's a sigh she knows well, the one Delilah uses when she's annoyed. Laudna ignores it, instead focusing on the weightlessness that greets her as she slowly falls to the forest floor.

Reckless, unnecessary, such a waste of ability so early on in the day. Delilah's voice supplies, and it takes Laudna's all to not roll her eyes at the scolding tone. She lands on the ground awkwardly, stumbling forward into a kneeling position when her knee tweaks and she feels the bones shift under her skin. And you still managed to mangle the landing somehow. Prodigious. Laudna manages to drag herself over to the hollow tree with a huff.

It only takes a few quick movements to resettle her knee, a faint pop-pop before Laudna relaxes against the blackened and burnt wood at her back. She shuffles her bag between her legs, lets it hang open as she inspects the collected sticks. Four of them are massive, the lightning strike threaded across the outer bark and scorched into the wood beneath it as well. The rest of the bundle are much smaller, a dense handful of gnarled twigs burn marks all across the outside while still being intact underneath. Her fingers twitch over the longest of the branchest, fingernail chipping some of the charred wood free to fall into her skirts.

"This should be enough to get some tarp, maybe even canvas." Laudna mutters, more to herself than to Delilah. She doesn't receive an answer, so Laudna busies herself with covering the hole into the tree's trunk. She gathers fallen tree branches, bunching them up around the tallest point before tangling it all up in her last bit of rope. It cascades like an overcrowded ladder, little leaves poking through with a burst of color.

Laudna settles into the tree with a sigh, smiling as birdsong fills the air around her. She starts filling the hollow with her collection, contorting herself so she can reach her packs. Strings of mishappen and unaccepted copper coins get pinned up, with the help of an errant branch she shoves against the burnt wood along with creative use of mending. The forest relaxes along with her, and Laudna lets her mind wander as she fills the small space with quickly crafted decorations.

I created new 5e homebrew rules to incorporate mixed ancestry and heritage because WOTC is stupid!!! This is a fully customizable point buy system. You can mix features from multiple ancestries to reflect exactly the character you want to make!

You have 6 Heritage Points you can spend on various features. Ancestral Features cost anywhere from 1-4 points depending on the ability. This set of rules only contains the PHB common races, but if people like these I may expand to include more 5e playable races!

This has not been playtested but feel free to use and let me know any feedback you may have! Also if you are mixed race like myself and have any input to make this better, I would love to hear from you! I made this for us!

Shout out to @barillapasta for (maybe inadvertently) inspiring this idea and @antlereed for workshopping the rules with me and helping come up with some unique human features!

Vox cursed under his breath. About time to reel it in-- Alastor was picking up on his signals.

"Whaaaat? Me? Pffff." He set his drink down. "I'm not worried about you! That's ridiculous. I'm just a little upset that you're going to do something reckless when I literally just told you that the great Radio Demon shouldn't fall to the hands of some microscopic losers..."

Yes, he was a little concerned about him. But only because he wanted to be the one to kill him! It wasn't fair if Alastor went out in a lame way like this! Then what? What would Vox do with all of his time?

Almost like Alastor had read his mind, the topic shifted to the cameras.

Vox opened and then shut his mouth, brows furrowing. Irritation prickled across his face.

"It's not pathetic, Al," he chuckled incredulously. "Haven't you ever heard of video calling...? It's the exact same thing, except I'm not using a phone and you don't HAVE a phone..."

He was about to say 'except you aren't willing to talk,' but Alastor was willing. He didn't have to engage in this conversation-- he could walk away at any time!

Here he was, though, chatting it up with Vox through infected lungs and a runny nose.

"Look, even if that wasn't a thing, ever heard of live cams? People love them! The zoo has one, you can tune in online to see what the demon sharks are doing..."

Like Alastor would even know what to do with a computer. Or care about the sharks.

"My point is, what I'm doing is HEALTHY. AND NORMAL."

Not if he had to affirm it like that.

Alastor hummed a bit and his facial static picked up just a hair before settling back down.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you sound concerned for my health." He said tauntingly.

He, too, remembered better times for the two. Times when it wouldn't have been uncalled for for them to be vulnerable around each other. He couldn't say he didn't miss it.

"But I do believe you're projecting your insecurities a bit too loudly. You're the one who contacted me first. I can't imagine how pitiful you look right now, sitting alone in your tower talking to a blurry picture of me. I, for one, don't think about and monitor your every move."

That didn't mean he wasn't on his mind often. He was hyper aware of Vox’s cameras and was reminded of him every time he caught one trailing him.

Were you named after anyone? I was. In good Southern (US) fashion, I have a double name that incorporates my grandmother's maiden name, which was also my mom's middle name and is now one of my niece's names.

When was the last time you cried? Today. I took one of my dogs to board at the same time that a pup was coming for their last vet visit and watching him surrounded by his crying family while an instrumental version of a Brandi Carlile song played over the vet speakers broke me. Managed to keep it together until I got to the car. Before that, Thursday during Critical Role.

Do you have kids? I do not. I do have wonderful nieces, and being their aunt is one of the best things in my life.

What sports have you played/do you play? I played church basketball and soccer when I was little. As an adult, I've played rugby but I tend toward activities like running, yoga, swimming, and hiking/wandering with my dogs.

Do you use sarcasm? Yes, in a dry humor way. My entire family is dry as hell, so it's a big part of my sense of humor, although I rein it in with strangers so as not to be a tool. I'm typically called a golden retriever gay, but one of the highest compliments I have ever received was one of my oldest friends telling me that Sister Michael from Derry Girls reminded her of me.

First thing you notice about people? I genuinely don't think I have a pattern here. Voice, maybe? Or smile? I do often appreciate and take note of people's style as well, especially shoes.

What is your eye color? Green

Scary movies or happy endings? Whichever has the better queer storyline

Any talents? I come in clutch in the following trivia categories: pop culture (non-reality tv); 90s country music/modern women of country; name that song; US history and politics and/or law; and queer things. Per my nieces, I am very good at the "funny faces" feature on FaceTime, a solid water slide escort, and an acceptable makeshift jungle gym. I have been told that I'm an excellent driver; I enjoy driving and have driven both a passenger van and a U-Haul up most of the East Coast of the US.

Where were you born? A military base in the United States.

What are your hobbies? I love writing, feeding/spending easy time with friends, reading (preference for fiction, poetry, and comics, although I do love some philosophy and theory as well), exploring good food and new places (solo or with friends, my own city or others), live music and theater, playing board games and Switch, watching tv and movies (my oldest niece and I see a movie every time I visit them in person and it brings me great joy), and being silly with my nieces. I'm a lawyer and a law nerd, so I also spend time following SCOTUS and listening to legal/political podcasts.

Do you have any pets? Two dogs, Annie and Buffy, a big doofy retriever mix and a tiny poodle-ish terror respectively.

How tall are you? 5' 8"

Favorite subject in school? Growing up, English/Lit, closely followed by History. At university, I majored in History and Gender & Sexuality Studies.

Dream Job? Obligatory note that I do not dream of labor. But I'm actually currently working on a career shift, so I'm giving this a lot of thought. I'd love to be a writer, journalist, professor, or preacher (last one is more complicated, for probably obvious reasons).

currently reading: This Is How You Lose the Time War, but only in fits and starts. It's not the fault of the novella, it's really good, i'm just having a hard time holding attention with reading right now so it's probably time to seek out short stories again.

last song: Aaron Copland Appalachian Spring. I don't remember which movement, it was on the radio when I was turning on something to dance to.

last series: Summer Camp Island. I love that show it's so good.

some of y’all watching critical role have never played d&d and it shows… even in the show, plenty of times, they use AOE spells that negatively affect their friends. and y’all are asking FCG to not use an intrinsic part of their character class because it’s disrespectful to laudna????? there is never a fear that he could destroy her using that. her level is always going to be higher than what FCG can destroy. there are mechanics in this game and sometimes they exist completely outside of character choices and that is okay
