Correctly and Safely removing and reinstalling a pitman arm can be more difficult than it first appears. Aside from the potential for injury reinstalling it incorrectly will impact on the performance of the steering system and the life of the components.
For instance incorrect installation can cause issues with wheel cuts on a vehicle, so it is important to get it right. The best start to getting it right is having the correct tools for the job.
Tools
There are a number of specialist tools which are recommended for the safe removal and reinstallation of the pitman arm,
Ball Joint Removal Kits – Hydrosteer Part Number 43-20245 (Large) and 43-20270 (Small)
Heavy Duty Steering Box Arm Removal Tool For Mac Osx
Ball Joint Remover Kit – Small
Pitman Arm Puller – Hydrosteer Part Number J43744 or 3591842K (Multiple versions available ask our technical staff for help)
Torque Wrench
Impact Wrench 3/4″ or Larger.
The key steps in the pitman arm removal process are
Remove the draglink using a ball joint remover device.
Remove the retainer bolt.
Apply grease to the face of the sector shaft and position the pitman arm puller on the center line of the sector shaft.
Tighten puller bolt, a tap with a hammer on the pitman arm may be required to release the tapers.
The key steps in the pitman arm installation process are
Place pitman arm over the sector shaft aligning the timing marks
Apply antiseize compound to the retainer nut
Torque the retainer nut to the torque specified on the nut
Continue to torque until locking tabs align with retainer nut
Punch locking tabs into place.
The video below, from R.H. Sheppard runs through the correct removal and installation process for a pitman arm.

Shop Manual: Antiseize and Identifying Y-Block Fords
Laxatives and Other Forms of Antiseize In the Mar. ’19 issue we responded to a letter from Dave McNurlen asking about the rumored use of Milk of Magnesia being used as antiseize compound in Air Force jet engines and other applications. While Milk of Magnesia is intended to be a laxative we received a number of emails on the subject of using it as an antiseize (along with a number of jokes we can’t print), here is one of them:
In another life, I was a USAF aerospace engineer assigned to the Propulsion Division (jet engines).  My primary responsibility was the GE J-79-15/17 as used in the F-4 Phantoms. In the overhaul and field tech orders, under “consumable materials” for the hot section parts was unflavored Milk of Magnesia as an antiseize material (including its national stock number).  Hot section parts, at least on the J-79, are everything aft of the combustion section. EGT temperatures run around 1,250 degrees F at 100 percent rpm. So things get pretty warm back there. And, the fasteners are made from a stainless steel known commercially as A-286.
I checked with a metallurgist friend of mine and his experience is pretty much the same as mine, Milk of Magnesia works on about everything warm to really hot. He did remind me that some programs were using Moly-Disulfide these days, but also reminded me that MolyD is a really good, dry lubricant also and can lead to the over tightening of bolts and nuts.  I ran into this problem when I transferred to the air frame side of the house. Bolts and threaded mounts were regularly being overtorqued and broken. Car guys should probably stick to unflavored Milk of Magnesia.

Y-Block Identification While catching up with photographer Eric Geisert and comparing progress (or lack of some) on our respective projects, the question of identifying Ford’s 312-inch Y-blocks came up. We both felt the information we dug up on Y-block identification should be passed on:
Ford produced these engines in a variety of displacements, including 239, 256, 272, 292, and 312. When first introduced in 1954 the Ford version of the Y-block displaced 239 ci (3.50×3.10-inch bore and stroke) while Mercury Y-blocks were 256 ci (3.625×3.10). In 1955 the 272ci (3.625×3.30) and the 292 (3.75x-3.30) were introduced (the 292 was the Thunderbird option in Fords and standard in Mercury). The final version, and the most sought after Y-block is the 312ci version (3.80×3.44) that came out in 1956.
Ford’s Y-blocks make a great-looking vintage powerplant for a street rod—and they have a great exhaust sound, too.
Identifying 312 blocks can be a challenge as all Y-blocks look the same. And while casting numbers are often used to tell one block from another, Ford didn’t make it easy with these engines. The number 6015 found on them all is Ford-speak for an engine block—it’s the letters that identify the displacement, sort of. The problem is the same letters, such as ECZ-A,  may be found on 292 and 312 blocks. The only way to positively identify a 312 block is by the 3.800-inch bore size or the casting numbers on main bearing caps—312s have the letters ECZ cast in while 292s have EBU.
Another indication that you’re looking at a 312 can be found on the crankshaft flange. There will be a smooth area on the outer diameter with a raised dot in the center. If the engine is disassembled, the rods and crankshaft will also carry the letters ECZ and the main bearing journals will measure 2.625 inches (all other Y-block mains are 2.498 inches).
Ford’s Y-blocks are rugged engines. At one time they were heavily criticized for having rocker arm oiling issues. However, the problem was generally due to be plugged passages to the top end from a combination of poor maintenance and the low-detergent oils available at the time. Problems can also result from incorrect assembly. Camshafts cross-drilled center journal use 1955- to early 1956–style cam. Cams with a grooved center journal you must use the late 1956-1964 cam bearings. Another mistake is incorrect installation of the rocker shafts.

MOSIL Anti-seize Compound & Lubricants What Is An Anti-Seize Compound?
Particularly, when an anti-seize compound is applied to bolts and gaskets during assembly, it assures they can be tightened without thread damage and also dismantled easily. In addition to these, anti-seize also prevents galling.
You might wonder, what is galling? Don’t worry, we will explain it to you. Galling generally refers to cold welding of bolts in nuts due to excess pressure and friction caused during assembly.
Above all, the anti-seize compounds serve the purpose of preventing dissimilar metals from getting corrodes in immensely corrosive surroundings and also enhance the performance of machinery.

Metal-free Anti-seize Compound
It is an Anti-scuffing and Anti-seize thread compound based on concentrated metal-free solid lubricants. It is available in paste form for multipurpose applications. It can be used during assembly to ensure freedom from scoring for those parts which may be difficult to lubricate in service. Most suitable as a heavy-duty thread lubricant to prevent seizure due to load and rust.

Moly Based Anti-seize Compound
It is a highly concentrated microsize molybdenum disulphide based multipurpose assembly/lubricating paste fortified with special additives to withstand very high temperature and extreme loads. It is most ideally suitable as an assembly paste for grease lubricating system to ensure freedom from scuffing and scoring. MOSIL GM-50 eliminates metal to metal contact between nuts and bolts preventing them from seizing leading to breakage under extremely heavy load.
