The Brilliant cut glass crystal wine decanter was made before World War 1. The advent of finding high grade silica in America led to higher quality glass than Europe and led to the brilliant shine that you see on this decanter. The beginning of world war 1 brought the brilliant glass making to a halt since the war effort needed the lead oxide the glass makers needed for their craft. This is why there was such a short period of brilliant glass made (1886-1915). The process was expensive and brilliant glass graced the tables of high society. This beautiful piece shows why these pieces were so coveted by high society. A Victorian Black Painted and Gilt Papier-Mâché Tray, depicting three or four attentive hunting dogs at rest, two elegant cut crystal decanters with holders, English circa 1850; height: 8 in. 20 cm., width: 24 in. 61 cm., depth: 20 in. 51 cm. ******* Before our new paradigm brought on by the Coronavirus, the American family rarely sat down together. People would run in and out, consume harried meals on the run. But now abruptly, we are being told to stay at home and 'shelter in place'. For the Victorians, there was a certain charm to staying at home. The Victorians valued presentation, etiquette, & manners. These social values can be understood through the artifacts they used like this elaborate tray & decanter set. This wonderful vintage set conveys ritual & opulence and a bit of whimsy; it suggests a tranquil evening of genteel conversation among intimates. In the mid 19th century even the middle class home had ornately decorated tableware made of the most expensive materials. There were specialized tools - some created because of the fear of disease and a preoccupation with not touching food - like orange cups with little hooks, sugar sifters and tongs, and butter holders that kept butter separate from possibly contaminated ice water. Not so much unlike our new reality. Now, we are simply being asked to do our part. So let's take our cue from the Victorians, slow down, socially distance ourselves "alone together".
