In the warrior Penelope AU, Does Odysseus have to deal with Antonius and the other suitors while his wife’s away? Also how would the challenge go in this AU?
hii, tysm for the interesting question! I'll explain how it goes in my version of the AU below!
Basically, yes, Odysseus still has to deal with the Suitors and Antinous, but with different circumstances to fit the whole thing better.
The Suitors aren't at Ithaca because a king can't rule without a queen, but because Odysseus can't rule without Penelope. They are a team, Odysseus doesn't do it all alone, he knows how smart she is. So without Penelope, the kingdom is crumbling, because half things aren't getting done and the other is neglected by a man who is depressed without his wife. The Suitors go to Ithaca to take over, but it's not that they want to marry Ody (not that they can, though I like to imagine Antinous as a close minded bi man and the Suitors as the LeFou to his Gaston), but rather, they want to be nominated sort of his advisors, someone really close to Odysseus to "help him", to then kill him secretly.
This is where Athena comes in. Athena is there at Ithaca, always has been, to do her best to help Odysseus and buy time. But she's disguised as , guess who, Mentor! Remember him from the myth? Odysseus said that once Mentor is finished weaving, he will choose a suitor, but Mentor is never done weaving. He's the goddess of weaving herself making her secret plan work. Also, Mentor just never fucking dies in 20 years and that's suspicious to the Suitors, since he's not really young. They wait for him to die and he never does, and to that Mentor claims that it's the "will of the gods, probably". Telemachus doesn't know that the man who grew him together with his dad is a goddess.
Now, the challenge. In EPIC (unless Jay changes it but from the snippet it's this), it's "whoever can string my husband's old bow, and shoot through twelve axes cleanly, will be the new king...". In this AU, it's basically the same, since one of Penelope's weapons is the bow. The Suitors are a bit weirded out, because how could a woman be that strong right, but they accept because they think it's too easy. Until Penelope disguised as a man comes and does it better than them. Another way I could twist it up is to make it a weaving challenge instead, and make the Suitors super bad at it because they are warriors, but I feel like we have the weaving theme already and something different is better!
This is my idea for now. Subject to change, like always. If you have any other ideas or want to share your own things, I'd be happy to hear 🫶

Wanna entertain me?
Full body design of Antinous, i gave him more curls to make him a parallel to Odysseus' hair
Also yes, he basically goes semi-naked around the palace showing off his body against the other suitors, and that he doesn't need anything more than his words, his charisma (and his dagger) to win.

I'm officially helpless. Something that has been in my mind for the past few days now is if Antinous made his own version of "Peaches" (from the mario movie) for Penelope. If you would, could someone PLEASE make an animatic of this?!

Idk if anyone's talked about this before but the Wisdom saga made me think about how Penelope isn't just being a loyal wife. I mean, there's loyal, and then there's "Your Majesty your husband is almost definitely dead by now we really really need a new king can you *please* legitimize someone to rule who is actually old enough to do that" the Ithacans probably think she's delusional for insisting that her husband is coming home after twenty years.
Penelope's not stupid, she hopes beyond hope, but she knows the chances of Odysseus making it home dwindle every day. Things happen, out at sea, ships never make it home. She knows there's a much greater chance that she's faithful to a ghost.
But it's not just loyalty. These men courting her would kill her son.
He's Odysseus's heir. All the men who trusted and followed Odysseus, well, Telemachus is his son. He can call on those other kings' friendship with his father. He has Odysseus's legacy behind him. Odysseus's friendships. He's young, but if he's inherited half his father's cleverness, half his father's strength, he's on the way to becoming a powerful king in his own right. A threat to his stepfather's rule.
And the suitors know this. If one of them became king, Telemachus wouldn't be likely to survive-- and if he did, it'd probably be in exile.
And Penelope knows this. So as she watches her son grow up, she says Odysseus must be coming home soon. She says she's waiting for him. And when that won't hold water, she stalls, and watches her son grow into his father's son. Anything she can think of, to give him more time.
She's ruled well, alone, but Ithaca must have a king.
She doesn't tell anyone why she's stalling, not even Telemachus. He's like Odysseus- he needs someone to protect, and right now that's her. Let him defend her virtue against the suitors, and she'll keep stalling, keeping them away from her son's throne until he can claim it.

The Wisdom Saga was definitely chalk full of dark material (more so than usual), Odysseus's turmoil and suicidal thoughts, Telemachus's struggle at home, and trying to be more like his dad, Athena coming to terms with her past mistakes and putting everything on the line for her friends. Resulting in her assault from her own dad.
But I feel we forget about Penelope here, the poor woman. Left alone for 20 years, holding out hope for her lost husband. Surely, talk of the war ending had reached her sooner or later. Yet there is no sign of her husband. But she waits, confined to her room all day and night because her palace is no longer a safe place anymore.
Her situation is basically any woman's worst nightmare. For 20 years, she's been stuck alone with a horde of power-hungry and dangerous men who ask her son to finally "open her door so they can have fun with her." They refer to her as "the crown" because in their eyes, thats her only value.
Thank god they're are probably guards that are still loyal to Odysseus, though I would guess they are as young as Telemachus, given how Ody probably took a good chunk of men to war.
But still, they outnumber her, threaten her son, and make jabs at her honor and fidelity. Penelope is forced to sit and wait as they grow more impatient every day. While she is cunning, she is still human, who knows how many days went by as she threatened to break. Just like her husband, still so many miles away from home.
