I think what annoys me about the LL ship is that Lorelai needs to be convinced about Luke with characters like Suki or Rory saying 'Oh he waited years for you' - like how is that her problem?? And whilst I like some slowburn ships its not mutual (if that makes sense). The majority of their pre relationship is him being in that romantic place and her not. So she 'has to come around' or 'is in denial' and to me if someones in that much denial then they probably don't have that strong feelings.
Agreed.
I personally LOATHE when a character's "friends" -I have a very concrete idea of how much they deserve that title. Or at least I know how I felt regarding people I considered friends trying to pull this shit on me- take it into their hands to pressure our character (99 times of 100 the female lead or LI, but I don't like it any better when it happens to male characters, just so we're clear).
In Watsonian terms, it makes me despise them and look down of them (don't they have anything better to do with their time?!? And like you say, it's unfair to the receiver. It's not their problem that someone is in unrequited love with them). In Doylist terms, it showcases the weakness of the relationship in question, that it can't even happen organically but one character must be pressured (and often emotionally beaten) into it. Meh.
But even if this didn't happen, I agree with you. My main problem with this kind of slow burns is that I find it hard to believe that there are actual strong feelings involved. There are characters and contexts where it's believable for a character to be in denial, or hesitant for other motives, or in a bad place, or emotionally immature... without hurting the ship. But most will-they-won't-they, ESPECIALLY if they're reactive ship, and ESPECIALLY when they're f/m, rarely make the cut for me. They just come across as lukewarm, and I don't lose my time with lukewarm.

jess/rory seemed way to similar to luke/lorelai, not as people (luke and jess have a lot on common, but have some pretty significant differences, and while rory and lorelai share some qualities they are very different in significant ways), of course, but their ships had a similar dynamic. also both ships fell into the trope of “guy is super into the girl from day one, but girl doesn’t reciprocate for a long time, and has to ~come around~ to her feelings for him”.
um i just sent you an ask and got distracted so i’m not sure whether i it sent or not but basically, imo the luke/lorelai jess/rory relationships share similar tropes even though the ships aren’t identical characters themselves are not exactly alike (jess has similarities and differences with luke, and rory has similarities and differences with lorelai (but obviously lorelai >>> rory). and both ships fall into the trope of boy is way more into girl than she is to him
i found an amazing gifset that compares luke to dean (and LL to rory/jess) and the op also compares rory/jess to LL. i agree with literally everything the op said. i can totally see both dean and jess in luke (and that is not a compliment lmao) girlmoregifs(.)tumblr(.)com/post/151027826985 girlmoregifs(.)tumblr(.)com/post/163145759660/new-follower-here-i-love-your-deanluke-parallel
(idk if that last one is from the same anon, but it fits the post, so)
Agreed, yeah. It's a bit sad because IMO Jess/Rory DIDN'T initially fell into that category, Rory was portrayed as ~drawn to him against her will and all; at the beginning, you could've even made an argument that she was a bit more into it than he was. But that dynamic changed, especially when Logan entered the picture lol; Rory was comically far more into him than into any other guy, and the show drove it home by including Dean-Rory-Logan moments (despite the lack of interaction between the guys, the dynamic was Present LOL), and Jess-Rory-Logan conflicts. Not to mention the whole deal with the poor Revival boyfriend she kept forgetting lmfao (and whose name I'm totally blanking out rn, to keep with the theme).
I also completely agree with that meta post. Points number three and four are why I don't vibe with this ships and they're perfectly explained there.
And, um. "A Gilmore girls blog without any Lorelai/Luke or Rory/Jess, for variety." I think I've found my favourite Gilmore Girls blog, guys xDD. Pity it hasn't updated in forever, but I'm going to be checking their edits when I have the time.

I would love to hear why you hate Piper/Leo! I found them so lacking in joy, chemistry and connection. Piper was even more bitter and surly around him than usual, and that's saying a lot.
Mainly, what I couldn’t stand about them was how much they monopolized the narrative. They sucked the fun out of the show, istg. It wasn’t all bad -after all, I actually like Wyatt and Chris, and I GUESS they had to be born somehow... but idk. Idk if the cost was too high :(((
My personal dislike is more pointed towards Leo than Piper, who I can enjoy far better without him around. Leo thought? I despise him. I despise his morality, I despise his “evil loves free will” quote (kinda side-eye @missbrunettebarbie for reminding me of that one ¬¬ lol), or the fact that he tampered with her mind or let his toddler be erased from existence. Is this your hero, fandom?? How is this guy tolerated lmao.
And YES to hating Luke/Lorelai---I thought I was the only one?! They had so little romantic chemistry, their communication and honesty ranged from minimal to nonexistent, they both seemed unhappy at least 90% of the time, and they're just so wildly incompatible! They're an example of how opposites may initially attract but don't necessarily have loving, happy relationships unless those differences balance each other out and each helps each other to be better, try new things, etc. But Luke/Lorelai were just depressingly different in an "I totally don't get you and am constantly exasperated by everything you say and do" kind of way. And don't get me started on Luke's anger issues (Tumblr loves him for being 'grumpy', lol) and him not telling Lorelai he had a secret daughter! And how Lorelai can't compromise at all and is way too immature for a serious relationship! Can these two even have a conversation?! I get shipping them before they were together, but it baffles me that people who saw how awful they were as a couple still love this ship! Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone!!!
(I’m pretty sure these two came together, I hope I’m not wrong about that xDD)
I don’t have to add a single criticism because you’re spot on. These are all issues I had with these two, although none as bad as the fact that I DIDN’T WANT LORELAI TO SETTLE SMH. Or Luke to become so central in the narrative, ugh.
Regarding that last point, frankly, people ship them because it’s what Luke wants to happen, which means is what Lorelai should want to happen and what is going to happen. Again, ugh.

For that meme---Luke/Lorelai? Piper/Leo?
Luke/Lorelai
We'd be talking about a completely different ship. I could never ship it as long as I felt Lorelai was settling, and that's what the relationship is. If Lorelai had been ALL IN with Luke from the very beginning, I might've liked it. Although Luke's personality could get in the way either way lmao. And their s6 plot would've shut it down.
Leo/Piper
If it had never swallowed the show and become a steady side-ship I might not have shipped them, but I would've tolerated them lol. Though frankly, I'd also give Leo a personality transplant. Can't stand him. Be less of a self-righteous dick, dude. Piper was a better character without him around, too.
And he should’ve NEVER been okay with Wyatt getting erased of the timeline, or manipulating Piper’s mind like he did in s6.
Send me two characters, and I’ll tell you what the show/movie/book could have done to get me to ship them

Gilmore girls edition: luke/Lorelai, rory/dean, rory/jess, rory/logan, Lorelai/chris
Lorelai/Luke
A borefest and a notp of the highest order. Lorelai settled for her safety school and I hate it, period.
And he wasn’t nearly hot enough for her, sns.
Dean/Rory
Listen... a little while back I had a stroke when a post about SPN reminded me Padalecki’s GG’s character was named Dean. I had forgotten his name, completely. It’s not even that long since I’ve rewatched the show or watched the revival, and I forgot his name. I think that says it all lmfao.
OTOH, I totally see why someone like Rory would go for and value someone like him, while the fandom seems to be confused about this lol. Probably because I disagree about Rory’s characterization with a lot of people *shrugs*.
Jess/Rory
I liked them a lot in s2! She was so giddy over him. Then s3 happened, with the show using Jess’ girlfriend’s humiliation to boost the ship, and I hated it. I’ve hated it since and the revival made it worse lol. Do not condemn Rory to this.
Logan/Rory
I don’t ship-ship it (I don’t ship anything except Emily/Richard, because I’m a woman of taste xD), but it’s my preferred Rory ship by far. It was entertaining as hell, she was OTT into him and it was DELIGHTFUL to watch. They looked cute together and they gave a spark to Rory’s storyline.
Chris/Lorelai
He was objectively terrible for her lmao, but I loved whenever he appeared because it stirred shit in the show xD. He could move BOTH Lorelai and Rory like no other man will ever be able to, sns. It always made for an interesting episode.
Their ending was super lame though. “You’re the man I want to want” is one of the worst lies told in television lmfao. After how much she’d tried NOT to want him and failed?? Yeah, right xD

the show really starts out as being centred around lorelai. we’re introduced to the show as her story, her town, her daughter, her parents, her world, and a l*ke still ends up taking narrative priority over her in certain ways, despite being introduced as such a minor character in HER story. like i still think in a lot of ways the story was still lorelai’s, but the romantic narrative in the show really ended up being about l*ke getting the girl he had ~pined for~ for so long. (2/3)
like l*ke basically ends up being the romantic lead of the show, with lorelai as The Girl, despite Lorelai ostensibly being the protagonist. i mean i do think lorelai still drove other elements of the show, like the town stuff, the lorelai/rory relationship, and the richard/emily/lorelai relationship (l*ke just isn’t interesting enough to carry the show. but when it came to the romantic arc of the show she really was reduced to a “prize” for l*ke. (3/3)
(there’s no part 1 in my inbox, something might’ve gotten lost...)
I think the show avoided Lorelai being completely sidelined, thankfully. Because the creators were truly invested in her and despite being ~swayed, still saw the dynamic clearly (s1-6 and revival, at least), and because she was a fountain of easy charm and charisma and Luke was painfully boring lmao.
But there’s no denying that he encroached into her storyline, and that he took space that he would’ve never had, like all the additional content about his own blood relations, had the circumstances not favoured him by default (I mean, ffs, wasn’t he supposed to be a secondary female character until the network pressed because they wanted a guy? What I wouldn’t give to watch THAT version of Gilmore Girls). That’s what annoys me. Can you imagine how it would go the other way around? Well, you can, because it’s happened once: Felicity in Arrow xDD. A story that ended with the Lorelai of the show (I’m so sorry I’m saying that about you gurl) dead, btw.
That’s still one exception vs. the surplus of displaced female leads we get (besides, Oliver had it coming for his own incompetence in being good to his main love interest to the point he couldn’t even keep her alive. Lorelai did nothing wrong!!). Though this one example seems to suggest a male lead will be punished more severely for giving in to this phenomenon lol.
The point is, the idea that this would happen to a majority of male characters is preposterous. The female version of Luke to the male version of Lorelai would be seen by most as some misguided pining silly girl who should move on with her life, at best. I doubt you’d have such a loud audience backing her up unless something was wrong with the story’s foundations, like in Arrow. Because people would presume that the male lead KNOWS what he wants, and would instinctively respect his wishes; so if he has ignored a woman for years, it must mean he doesn’t want to be with her*.
*obviously, there are circumstances where an audience throws this through the window; specifically, when they don’t consider the woman he does want Worthy TM for whatever bs reason -like race; female characters of color are target disproportionally by this. But I’ve also seen it with wealth, or perceived “value” for a variety of factors like her past relationships or family stability lmao. Fandoms can be really fucking snob.

Christopher Hayden.
Aaaaaaand that’s it. At least that relationship moved me emotionally (even if it was to wreck me because yes, Christopher was… yeah xDD), had actual chemistry, and wasn’t a complete bore-fest ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Luke/lorelai
i don’t know them enough | wtf | why | just NO | tolerable | they’re okay | cute | awww | babies | hot | I will go down with this ship | OTP
Boooooooring and an extremely lukewarm romance for a character that was everything but. I'm ultimately more than happy with Lorelai's storyline as she fulfilled her profesional goals and that matters most though, so I can let it go. But man, it was the opposite of exciting for either of us xD

I just saw a tweet saying Arrow failed to replicated Lorelai/Luke with Feliciy/Oliver, and-
I know "protagonist gets stuck in a passionless relationship with a secondary character who starts taking too much space in a show whose Theme they weren’t even supposed to belong to" wasn't what they were getting at, but at least Arrow had the decency to do that shit to a character I didn't give half a fuck about LOL.

Gilmore girls
anonymous asked: gilmore girls
(idk if it was the same anon twice or different ones some days apart, but I’m including both)
Top 5 favourite characters: Emily, Lorelai, Richard, Paris, and Christopher.
Other characters you like: Mitchel, Logan, Rory (just because I think she’s a dull person doesn’t mean I dislike her LOL. And I think her journey was interesting and true to her character), the townies in general…
Least favourite characters: Luke and Jess. Though I actually found them likeable together (or with their family, in general), I just dislike them in shippy situations.
Otps: only Emily/Richard, though I enjoyed all the story beats brought to us by Chris/Lorelai. Out of Rory’s ships I preferred Logan/Rory, but the others had their moments in a “interesting even if unpleasant” way.
Notps: Luke/Lorelai. He was just so... meh. Also, Lane and the blond guy (especially the pregnancy storyline my god. Even more after finding out it was a likely substitute for a RORY pregnancy storyline ¬¬). Why couldn’t it work out with Dave *sniffs*.
Favourite friendships: Rory & Paris had its moments, I guess.
Favourite family: the Gilmores, in all their drama. But Emily & Lorelai’s relationship especially.
Favourite episodes: whenever Christopher visited, he upted the drama xDD. And any Emily/Richard focused episode.
Favourite season/book/movie: either season five/six (Rory’s plot was very entertaining there), or the Revival.
Favourite quotes: this show had a lot of good lines but the one that I’m remembering right now is Emily’s “I demand to go first!” *ugly sobbing*. Or her Revival lines about how she’s tired of artifice and bullshit.
Best musical moment: n/a.
Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: Emily and Richard’s reconciliation!
When it really disappointed you: Lane’s pregnancy storyline.
Saddest moment: I love love love the ending line but I have to recognize it’s tragic af xD. Also, Rory & Christopher’s scene in the Revival. She was still yearning for his love but much more resigned to his absence and his detachment and it was just so heartbreaking.
Most well done character death: I only remember Richard’s and I don’t want to say that. But it was really well written and I suffered A Lot. It probably added to all my emotional journey with the Revival.
Favourite guest star: Michel was da best.
Favourite cast member: n/a.
Character you wish was still alive: .......... Richard :(((
One thing you hope really happens: nothing. I’m ultimately content with everything the show was, at the end of the day.
Most shocking twist: none lol. It wasn’t that kind of shock.
When did you start watching/reading?: I remember I watched some s2-s3 episodes on tv years ago as a kid. I know it was those season because Jesse appeared and I disliked him xDD (not that I liked Dean either. Honestly, I just thought Rory had terrible taste lol).
Best animal/creature: Paul Anka the dog, of course!
Favourite location: Stars Hollow was... quaint. Everything interesting happened there, definitely xD
Trope you wish they would stop using: only Gilmore girls should get unexpectedly pregnant xDD (I didn’t hate Sookie’s pregnancies stories as much as Lane but... nah).
One thing this show/book/film does better than others: it portrayed family relationship in a very honest yet charming way.
Funniest moments: Richard scaring Logan for Rory is the first that I remembered lol.
Couple you would like to see: n/a.
Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: n/a.
Favourite outfit: I liked Rory’s dress getup from when she jumped with Logan.
Favourite item: n/a.
Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: nope.
What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: I’d be just another person living on Stars Hollow up until I got my first chance to move away xD.
Most boring plotline: Lorelai/Luke zzzzzz.
Most laughably bad moment: the way Lorelai and Christopher were written in s7, against everything that had come before xD
Best flashback/flashfoward if any: n/a.
Most layered character: Lorelai :D
Most one dimensional character: Dean.
Scariest moment: n/a.
Grossest moment: n/a.
Best looking male: ................ the men in this show weren’t that good looking tbh. Christopher, I guess? Or Logan. But. Eh.
Best looking female: Rory is very pretty, in this delicate porcelain doll way.
Who you’re crushing on (if any): I’d crush on Lorelai ngl.
Favourite cast moment: n/a.
Favourite transportation: n/a.
Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): the you jump I jump scene I mentioned before.
Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: n/a.
Best promo: n/a.
At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: it was in the first Christopher episode I watched (which was not the first Christopher episode, but the one with the "check first that he has a trust fund" quote lol). Everything felt more REAL, and not just breezy fun like the random episodes I'd watched so far.
