A British sailor throwing a lance bomb from a Royal Navy Drifter.
The lance bomb is exactly what it looks like. roughly 15 kilos of explosives on the end of a stick, to be thrown directly at a submarine that has surfaced alongside a ship.
Apparently one thrown from the small auxiliary ship the HMS Gleaner of the Sea (a repurposed fishing boat) hit the German submarine UB-13 and sank it in April 1916.

Page 1. ----- 'Pictured above are three of the four members of the crew of a Hudson bomber which, Air Minister Power announced recently, attacked a Nazi U-boat in the Atlantic eff Canada's East Coast, The submarine was caught on the surface and while it crash dived at first sight of the aircraft, depth charges straddled its hull before it was fully submerged. A good deal of debris was blown to the surface and oil bubbled up spreading to a patch 2 miles long and 25 feet wide. There was not sufficient evidence of the U-boat's "death" to claim a "kill" but the assessment officers ruled that the sub had at least suffered "considerable damage." "Aventure à Lucien Roy de Timmins," Le Soleil. April 28, 1943. Page 9. --- Lucien Roy, un Canadien français de Timmins, Ont., a eu l'aventure de sa vie lorsque le navire qui le portait, ainsi que 400 travailleurs américains et 160 ouvriers canadiens se rendant respectivement au Groënland et au Labrador, fut torpille et coulé le 27 août par un sous-marin allemand dans le détroit de Belle-Isle.
Roy n'oubliera jamais les six heures qu'il a dû passer avec ses compagnons sur les eaux du détroit.
Un autre Canadien français de Timmins, M. Napoléon Roy, qui n'a cependant aucun lien de parente avec M. Lucien Roy, était au nombre des survivants.
C'est une corvette canadienne qui effectua le sauvetage de Roy et des six hommes qui avaient pris place avec lui sur un radeau de sauvetage.
Il était environ neuf heures du matin lorsque le navire fut atteint. Vingt minutes plus tard il avait disparu sous les flots. Il se trouvait alors à quelques deux jours et demi de Sydney.
Les six heures que Roy et ses compagnons ont passé sur le radeau comptent parmi les plus dures qui soient dans la vie d'un homme. "Des vagues énormes, a raconté Roy, venaient nous envelopper et ce n'est qu'en faisant des efforts continus que nous avons pu nous maintenir sur le radeau".
Rescapés par la corvette canadienne, Roy et ses compagnons furent débarqués à Fort-au-Bay où on le prodigua les traitements nécessaires.
