I’m rewhatching glee (season 1) and I really really really hate how Shelby talk about Rachel like if she was a baby she gave on adoption because, girl you were a subrogate (Rachel told us herself that her dads used a subrogate) you knew once you gave birth that baby wasn’t going home with you.
And she wants to meet her, which is not really a problem, but once Rachel is happy to have her in her life, Shelby is like ok you know what you are to old I want a baby so I’m going to adopt your classmates child. And left her.

The whole “Rachel doesn’t need a mom” excuse is ridiculous to me. Like what 16 year old girl doesn’t need a mom? I mean I’m the same age as she was and I don’t know what I would do without my mom around. Luckily I don’t have to worry about that, but Rachel doesn’t have that luxury. And the Puck shit was so gross, like what would a 30 something year old want with an 18 yr old. I’m pretty sure she’s the same age as Will, who was in his early/mid 30s at that point. And honestly her saying that to Rachel then turning around and adopting her bully’s/rival’s child is just damn.
Do you like Shelby? Because I really don’t. She tries to come back into Rachel’s life after so long and basically used Jesse to get to her?
I fucking hate Shelby lmao. she's my least favorite adult on the show. this is where I placed her on my Glee character ranking.
Tumblr media
she introduces herself back into a fifteen year old Rachel's life, acts like a mom for about five seconds, before deciding that she doesn't want to because Rachel's not a moldable little girl anymore. she uses the excuse that Rachel doesn't really need a mom, but she says this to her while Rachel is on the brink of tears. because clearly that's a girl who doesn't need a mother anymore. okay. and after all that, she forces Jesse to transfer back to Carmel, effectively ending her daughter's relationship. and then, she adopts Beth. Rachel's teammates' child.
and THEN. Shelby comes back, dangles Quinn's kid in front of her face while Quinn is clearly in a vulnerable head space, and then starts WORKING AT QUINN AND RACHEL'S SCHOOL.
then she sleeps with a teenager. a boy who has been canonically groomed by older women since he was, at the LEAST, 15 years old. granted, she doesn't know that, but her sleeping with a student is bad enough. we all discuss how badly it must've affected Quinn when Shelby came back to town, but nobody really discusses how it probably affected Puck. and to enter a sexual relationship with him while he's clearly adjusting to having Beth back in his life is irresponsible at BEST.
and then she leaves again. so yeah. I don't like her much.

wow it’s almost as if quinn needed a guiding hand and some love and acceptance and maybe if you had just let her be a part of beth’s life from the get-go and not slept with beth’s bio dad (WHOS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL) then maybe quinn would’ve been more inclined to turn things around

i hate the way quinn never gets any closure when it comes to her relationship with beth
like season 3 makes it abundantly clear that quinn is not over that she had to give her child up (which really isn’t surprising because she was 16 and didn’t have any kind of help from a trusted adult during or after the pregnancy)
and after she has spent an entire year trying to move on shelby just randomly appears back in town with beth and constantly dangles the possibility that she could see beth above quinn’s head just to ultimately always refuse to let quinn have any contact to her
and not only that at the same time shelby allows puck to see beth. meanwhile quinn is trying so hard to get to see her while being torn down by all the adults in her life who are supposed to help her
and once shelby leaves again (without giving quinn any chance to say goodbye to beth of course) quinn obviously hasn’t moved from what happened
because now she only has pictures of beth left that she keeps in her locker where she can constantly see them. she even has made beth say hi mommy to her in one of the pictures
like this girl is still so hung up on what happened (with good reason) and it’s literally never addressed again
i just hate how quinns life got complete turned over just because shelby decided to return to lima and directly initiate contact with quinn. shelby literally ruined all the progress quinn made in season 2 by bringing beth back into her life even though she really should have known better than that

hey. would’ve should’ve could’ve, Puck x Shelby. Thoughts?
Hmmm yes and no
Yes in the sense that she's taking advantage of him, if she hadn't encouraged him and lead him on then he might have not got caught up in all of it, he was just a teenager and she's his teacher and the adoptive mother of his child and she gets into his head and then just. leaves. And those are all things that are really reflected in the song.
But on the other hand, this isn't the first time he's gone through something like this. I think this is the worst case of it, because she has so much power over him and he really thinks he has a chance of a relationship and a life with her and she lets him think that, but it's not even close to the first time a grown woman in a position of power has taken advantage of him. He thinks he's hot shit for sleeping with all the women whose poos he cleans but they are employing him and they are adults and he is a teenager. I think it makes perfect sense that he thinks this thing with Shelby is appropriate and good. And obviously it's her fault for taking advantage of that, he's vulnerable and needed her to be the adult in this situation, but because of all this history I think the song doesn't quite fit.
"If you never touched me, I would've gone along with the righteous"
"If I'd only played it safe"
"God rest my soul, I miss who I used to be"
These lyrics don't really fit in my opinion, because he was already kinda fucked up from so much shit before Shelby, it was too late for "playing it safe," maybe he misses who he used to be but it wasn't before Shelby it was before everything.
So I guess I think it does fit Puck, and it fits Puck and Shelby, but it's not just Puck and Shelby. It's him and Shelby and the who knows how many other women have taken advantaged of a kid who really just needed someone to look out for him.

Oh my god! I never see anyone talk about her so I thought I was the only person who hated Shelby. Quinn was wrong and did a bunch of bad things to get Beth back but to be honest I don’t care because Shelby should not have been that girl’s mother. She slept with her student! Who cares that he was 18! That is so fucking creepy and while he was a legal adult he was still a kid. And she forces herself into Rachel’s life by manipulating one of her students into helping her instead of just asking Rachel’s dad’s if she could meet her. Then as soon as she is in Rachel’s life she decides that Rachel is too old. Ma’am you couldn’t have realized that before?! And she is still a kid! There are plenty of things that a girl might want a mother for in her teens and later. And then she immediately replaces Rachel by adopting the kid of two students? That was extremely shitty and Rachel deserved much better than that.
Just thinking about how Shelby Corcoran took one look at a 17-yr old with pink hair and was immediately like..."you are not safe to be around children", but then welcomed the guy with a mohawk and a LITERAL CRIMINAL RECORD who she first met while he was slashing her students' tires, and was like "You're fine though".
Ah Shelby Corcoran hate squad, good good.
Honestly that just points to her hypocrisy. Shelby does what Shelby likes with little to no regard for the people around her. Especially not teenagers, whom she's making relive some serious trauma.
Tbf the way Glee as a whole uses Quinn's pink hair as shorthand for "she's off the rails" even though that should be the least of anyone's worries when she's dating a 40-year-old (apparently??) is bonkers. Funny thing is Quinn only gets truly deranged and starts reading up on Satanic rituals to frame Shelby after she goes blonde again. But anyway, yeah, good point.
Shelby sees a teenage girl clearly spiraling and crying out for help, decides to put her on another roller coaster and emotionally blackmails her, only furthering that spiral. God forbid she gets Quinn some real help or, arguably better, stays out of her life altogether. But Shelby also sees a teenage boy who might also be troubled in different ways, more violent ways but she lowkey wants to jump his bones so it's cool he's allowed in her kid's life. That's not anything against Puck, he just, you know, has a bad track record and a bad rep he's all too eager to lean into. Meanwhile Quinn's having mental breakdowns for breakfast but she's bad news and bad news only because she has pink hair. I mean, to be fair, in her mental state I would also probably not be comfortable with having Quinn around my toddler but what Shelby does with the blackmail and all is just vile.
I think Shelby just loves having that power over these two teens, honestly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And not to turn this into a more serious conversation than it needs to be, but I do 100% believe that was it. Because I acknowledge she's Beth's mother but she didn't have to come back to Lima and traumatize not one, not two, but three teens (including Rachel) by doing so. And she did for, what? The money of the Motta's? And then messing with the kids was just a bonus.

“You can be apart of this family too, Quinn. We really want you to.”
Yeah, you just have to change everything about yourself, go back to the Perfect Model, and never get help for your clear depression and traumas. Sounds like a fair deal to me!

the fact that quinn tries to steal a baby is already wild. but what i only just realized is that is basically a more intense repeat of a s1 storyline.
both quinn and shelby vigorously pursue their birth daughter when they've hit rock bottom; both of them do this to make themselves feel better and not with many thoughts about what this means for their daughter; both of them go behind the child's actual parents' back and don't care much about the law as they do it.
the main difference is that shelby's actions aren't really judged by the narrative all that much, where quinn is fully seen as a villain during this arc. that's not to say quinn wasn't in the wrong here, because she definitely was.
but there's just something so funny to me in the way that these two pretty similar storylines happen, except the framing is very different. and on top of that, the main person to call quinn out on her actions, is shelby, who did a pretty similar thing two years prior and fully got away with it.
