I’m just going to say it. Stephenie Meyer is too sophisticated a writer for many weak readers, including her fans.

BIOGRAPHY:
Sam Evans had never been the sharpest tool in the shed. He knew it, his parents knew it, and everyone in school knew it. He wasn’t stupid by any means, but Sam had this naivety to him that often made him seem less intelligent than he really was. What he had in common sense and street smarts mostly made up for his lack of academics. It wasn’t until halfway through high school that he finally realized part of the problem, and why it was so hard for him to learn and grasp information. He was dyslexic. Initially, Sam tried to hide this from his teachers and fellow students because he was embarrassed. It explained why school was more difficult for him than most, but he felt like it was just easier to play the dumb jock like he always did. He had football and basketball offers for college, so his senior year Sam didn’t care about putting in that extra effort. Syracuse wanted him on their basketball team and he accepted. It didn’t even cross Sam’s mind that he would still have to keep up his grades once he entered college.
Unfortunately, what people warned about college was right; it was harder than high school. Sam felt unprepared and needed a tutor, but one that also specialized in dyslexia. His parents didn’t have the money despite working their asses off day in and day out, so on top of it all Sam got a part time job at a local Starbucks to help pay for that service. His grades did begin to improve, which was imperative for staying at Syracuse. Classes started to become a little easier and clearer, and his professors were more understanding once they realized the disorder he was dealing with. Sam was rising in the ranks of the basketball team as well; he had mostly sat the bench his first season but quickly became a starter as a sophomore. Once given the chance he became a fan favorite, and even had some eyes on him from the NBA scouting. For a simple guy that grew up in a struggling home he felt damn lucky to finally be achieving his dreams… unfortunately it was cut short though. A torn ACL left Sam unable to play basketball again, and put a huge dent in his future plans. For a while he continued classes at Syracuse aimlessly, unsure of where to focus next.
Two things had always given Sam comfort when he was feeling down or between sports seasons. Drawing, and video games. Both gave him that drive to push himself further and be creative, which was one of his underlying talents. Sam had always played games with his friends at a tender age and even still in college, but drawing was something he kept more to himself. With more free time he really started to practice his art, and learning that there were contests that actually awarded money for that sort of thing had him entering and winning effortlessly. Sam started to enjoy his hobbies even more when he paired them together and began taking gaming and programming classes at Syracuse. With time, he graduated all of his classes, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Sam wanted to get deeper into the gaming career, but at first he wasn’t sure how. Through the help of his guidance counselor he applied to several internships, and finally landed one in New York. He made the move to advance his career, and hoped to make something of himself. Something his family would be proud of.
Sam was so successful with his internship and fresh faced that the company offered him a permanent position. Beneath his jock exterior, Sam had always been a lover of Star Wars, comic books, and anything that was once nerdy but was now trendy again. He’s grown up and quit hiding that part of him, and instead embraces it these days. He uses his natural creativity and that which has stemmed from those interests every day, whether it’s in designing the newest game or advancing at conventions and connections. Sam is happy, mostly. At times he wishes his athletic career had panned out the way he wanted, but it’s not like he has a time machine to go back and fix it. While he can design games at the blink of an eye, that’s something he hasn’t tackled yet.
QUESTIONNAIRE:
(please answer the following questions in character, just so we can get a feel of your character’s voice and personal interpretation)
1. What is your personal definition of success? What motivates you towards that particular goal? Being happy and not living paycheck to paycheck. As someone who grew up in a family that struggled a lot to make ends meet, I think anyone that can make a living and not have to worry 24/7 about their bills, having food, or a roof over their head, are successful. Unless they’re unhappy. I know many rich people that are miserable and I don’t really consider that a success. There’s more to wealth than just money and material things. At least that’s what my parents always told me.
2. If your life was a movie title, what would it be? “Sam I Am”
3. Name a song you’d include on your personal soundtrack. “Good Ol’ Boys” by Waylon Jennings. Bonus that it’s The Dukes of Hazzard theme.
4. When faced with an obstacle, either personal or in your career what’s your go-to course of action? Playing video games or Skyping my family. Sometimes unwinding with one of my favorite games helps me calm down or inspires me if it’s a work related thing. Talking to my parents or siblings always gives me that extra nudge I need and they’re always willing to listen and give advice. If all else fails, binge eating Cool Ranch Doritos.
