you know what i’m actually pissed that i had to sit through so much bullshit with river song and the constant confirming and reconfirming of her relationship with the doctor, the not-quite-platonic nature of ALL previous female companions with the doctor and the frequent pulpy lampshading of doctor who’s flirting relationship with sexuality only to have 13 be completely sexless. it is so obvious that they were terrified to put a foot wrong with the first woman and so gave her nothing so no one could criticise them, without realising that distinction would read as so infantilising and sterile.

It’s actually worse than that because they explicitly gave her a romance subplot, but were too cowardly to see it through. i don’t think i should have to sit through so much overt romanticism with previous male doctors to have a canon wlw doctor baited and then abandoned at the last minute. it undermines all the other positive messages of the show in my opinion

“I’m sorry, Marvin… I’m not sure there’s anything I can do,” Dr. Danan said quietly. 

“W-What does that mean?!” Marvin squeaks in fear, holding his mask tight in his hands. “There’s nothing you can do?! I have fucking white suit words scrolling across my eyes!!” 

Danan sighs. She’s already taken Marvin to get x-rayed and to run some scans on him but… 

“It’s… architect technology, Marvin,” She says, turning to the panicked merman and his brothers. 

Jackie tilts his head, “…architects? Who are they?”

“Isn’t that like… a human word for someone who builds?” Chase asks. 

Marvin stiffens up, pink appearing in his eyes as he drones out, “Architects is the name given by Alterra to a species of highly advanced and ancient beings that arrived on Planet 4546B approximately one thousand years ago, searching for a cure for the Kharaa Bacterium. Most information surrounding them is currently unknown.” Then he shudders and curls up smaller, blinking the pink out of his eyes. 

Schneep looks at him sympathetically and then looks back at Danan desperately, “There must be something we can do for him… some way to stop uh- these fits of knowledge?” 

“…sounds like a PDA,” Jamie observes sheepishly. 

Marvin chokes on a quiet sob and curls his tails up to his chest. 

“It’s beyond anything that we know.” Danan says, looking at Marvin with worry. “We’ve been trying to study it for years but… all our attempts to replicate their technology falls short. I have…no idea how to even begin to approach this.” 

“I-If this is just architect stuff then… w-why do I suddenly have knowledge that Alterra has?” Marvin asks shakily. 

Anti nods, “Yeah… s-some of the stuff he’s been saying is stuff I used to hear back at HQ…didn’t remember it until he said it but…” 

Danan hums in thought, “Well… there was an attempt to make an Alteran Warper facility like the one in the lost river- where you just were, Marvin. Maybe… in an attempt to merge technologies… it’s not out of the question that they might have set up a data hub there that links our Alterran PDA database to the one the architects held there. There’s a very large power supply down in the depths…” She shakes her head, “I’m sorry boys… I’m a doctor- a Xeno-biologist. This is going into technology which is not my speciality.” 

“Zara is good with tech!” Jackie tries to add.

Dr. Danan just shakes her head again, “She wouldn’t know about this… I’m so sorry, Marvin.” 

She swims over to the x-Ray display and points to the place where Marvin’s warper chip is. “…on the bright side? It seems that your chip is no longer broken! So… you don’t need to wear your mask anymore or get into those warper fits…?” 

Marvin’s lip warbles, “But I finally was liking my mask…!” 

“You can still wear it Marv…” Chase tries to say encouragingly. “Everything’s gonna be okay. We’ll figure this all out.” 

Marvin looks up at his older brother with a warbling lip. Then he turns away and curls up smaller. “I… I need to clear my head…” and then in a quick burst of blue and purple ripples, he’s gone. 

“Wait Marvin!” Schneep tries to say then curses once he’s gone, “Damnit-! We have to find him! Being alone is how he got into all of this-!” 

Chase swims over and places a hand on Schneep’s shoulder, “…let him be Henrik… I… I think he just needs some space.” 

Jamie looks concerned, “…what if he gets hurt?” He whispers. 

“…We’re just gonna have to trust him…” Chase replies. 

Jackie looks very worried out the window of the lab… hoping his twin was okay.

Marvin warps around for a bit, trying to find a place that could help him feel better. But… somehow- he ended up back in the lost river. This time though it is a completely different place. One he hadn’t seen before- with beautiful glowing trees and waterfalls of green glowing brine. He lets himself swim aimlessly, marveling at the sights. He even smiles as he sees the ghost rays swimming above, singing their ghostly wails. 

But, then- he hears a roar that has him stiffening. He turns around as sees the terrifying lavender glow of a ghost Leviathan-! He cries out then quickly swims as far away as he can- and finds himself in a very strange cave. He blinks, looking around the walls. There’s… bent metal right at the entrance… was this an Alteran site once? …if it was it might be abandoned now. They tend to avoid places that get filled with water. And based on the dents… seems like the ghost Leviathan wouldn’t bother him here. 

Marvin swallows shakily then goes to explore around- better than just… warping from place to place. He doesn’t want to tire himself out and be left in a bad spot. 

“…maybe this was dumb…” Marvin mumbles to himself, “I… what if I get in trouble and the others can’t find me?” He then shakes his head out and looks out in determination, “…I-i'll be fine though! I…I can handle myself. …mostly-“

Truthfully though- since reuniting with his brothers… there’s not a lot of time he spends completely by himself. And if he is- it’s usually within eye or earshot of one of the others. Maybe that’s why this was so scary… he hadn’t been truly on his own since… 

He shakes his head out again. This is fine- he’s a tough hybrid. He doesn’t need his brothers to baby him… Anti is already able to be on his own. He should be able to too! 

He swims for a while, following a winding path that seems to be made out of the roots of the ghost trees. It was kinda eerie… 

But then- at the end of the cave, there’s not an exit. Instead… There's a hollowed out cavern and- some kind of white suit machine. It’s a diamond frame on top of a triangle that’s sunk into the sand. And inside the frame is a glowing green field of energy.  

“What… is this thing…?” Marvin wonders. Then he stiffens as his eyes shine with pink, “An Alien Arch is a large construct used by the Architects. All auxiliary arches connect to the Primary Containment Facility.” 

Marvin quickly shakes off the trance and then backs up from the arch, shaking, “T-That’s where they had Jack…!” 

He starts to swim away but then finds himself pausing, looking back at the arch. …it was Architect technology, huh? And… the new things he can do are because of them. Is there some way… he could make this arch… go somewhere else? So it wouldn’t take him straight to the white suits. And then, Maybe… maybe it could help him find more answers about the architects and who they were- maybe he can find some way to stop what’s going on in his head! …maybe he could even find a way to help Jack! 

Narrowing his eyes in determination, Marvin swims towards the arch. He looks at its massive size and is momentarily intimidated before shaking himself out and touching the frame. He closes his eyes and tries to summon that weird feeling he felt when he got scared back in the cove- when he made his mask move! 

Slowly, the energy field starts to shimmer and shift as blue energy lights up over the frame. And then the field turns from green to a light shimmering blue. 

Marvin swims back and then looks down at his hands in wonder. “T-That worked?” He breathes. 

Then, he braces himself, going to tie his mask around his neck before he swims through the energy field. 

When he appears on the other side… he’s in another cave. With its own alien arch but the blue energy quickly dies down and leaves the frame empty. 

“…Strange,” Marvin says, holding his arms as a chill comes over him. 

it feels… colder here? He doesn’t usually feel the temperate changes too much but here it is very stark. He holds his arms then tries to look for any hint of sunlight- or someway out of here. He eventually looks up and sees a shimmer of light up further above. He ventures through the labyrinth of twisting rocks. Huh- this kinda felt like home. But… these rocks were darker and were… glowing? They look just like Jack’s tails! 

This gives Marvin hope that soars in his chest. He quickly swims faster- finally breaking into the light and-! 

This… isn’t even close to home. Those strange twisting rocks make up the landscape, strange plants he’s never seen growing along the shores of flat sandy plateaus. And there’s things that looks like creepvines flowing with the current, but they’re… yellow? And then- a fish swims by. Marvin thinks for a second that it’s a peeper but… it’s not! Or… maybe it is? It looks just like the ones back home but this one is glowing- with blue tips and it’s white and purple! 

“Where… the hell am I…?”

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S4

Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?

Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.

In which we lose two of the three top billed cast members and gain two new ones, a couple of the regular writers and directors also seem to cycle out, and in the ensuing slightly confused flooding of our previously steady stream, Frank is sinking like one of those water-logged stumps, someone seems intent on trying to keep Margaret from also getting dragged down by him through the approach “she’s just not around again, idk,” Radar is somehow swimming up-stream and now seems several years younger than he was when we started, and Alan Alda is piping up more and more to point out the banks and steer us into deeper waters, and if he’s also maybe altering our course just a little, let him.

Meanwhile, TIMESCALE: we learn in the opening scene that the first three seasons have timelooped for "just over a year” :) elated with this data :))

And so we enter M*A*S*H, Part Two:

M*A*S*H - Season 4 Recommended sequence

4x01-02 ‘Welcome to Korea, Parts 1 and 2' - Acting CO Frank Burns really thought he was going to get to mold their new doctor Hunnicutt into a Mini Frank, but did not account for Hawkeye Pierce, on a desperate scramble to the airfield, to pick him up while still reeling and reckless from having just lost his best friend, and in this, one of the most riveting figures BJ has ever encountered. TOO LATE, he got his hands and damage all over him already! Anyway I helplessly detailed exactly what goes down in these if you are BJ Hunnicutt (BJ…Hunnicutt) in my increasingly disclosing notes, so stay tuned for that.

4x04 ‘It Happened One Night’ - Not to be a weirdo and skip to Colonel Potter already being here, but this one is really good. This is one of my quiet favorites of the season. And I think this works so much better as the one to follow the two-part premiere actually. Hawkeye and BJ aren’t quite in sync yet—this is accurate. Hawkeye and Margaret continue to get more in sync—this too is accurate. Lots of Klinger (LOTS of Klinger) (hirsute…), Radar being so irritated with the chaotic bumbling of the new private is so funny, and you’re still getting a good impression of our small, forthright new CO: regular Army, but you know what? Maybe…our regular Army. And that could rule actually. Oh: AND EVERYONE’S SO COOOLD. My fav-orite!

4x05 ‘The Late Captain Pierce’

BJ: “For he was a jolly good fellow…” Hawkeye: “I was much too young to die.”

A clerical error renders Hawkeye legally dead. M*A*S*H x Catch22 for real, murder me. And, five episodes into the new season of an episodic sitcom and they were still letting Hawkeye be torn up over those he’s lost, and have this wholly new emotional register with his new friend BJ, way longer for both than I’d thought they would let him have. But y’know, Alda got to direct this one.

4x09 ‘The Kids’ - Great TV show setup: learn things about the characters by how they read bedtime stories to dislocated orphans. If you guessed, “oh yeah, and that’s gonna create the moment where Hawkeye finally lets himself start to fall in love with BJ,” you are a better guesser than I!! But man what a good choice. Alda. (Back in the chair.)

4x10 ‘Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?’ - I just adoooore Dr. Sidney Freedman. Any scene with Sidney in it: a balm. Here he returns for the episode in which the 4077th gets a wounded soldier who says he’s Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Radar is now twelve.

4x16 ‘The Price of Tomato Juice’ - I was trying to describe the format of these kinds of chain of wants & favors episodes to Jody and she was like, oh, you mean it’s like the Deep Space Nine where Nog explains The Great River of Commerce. Yes exactly.

4x19 ‘Hawkeye’ - They gave the rest of the regular cast the week off and just had Hawkeye monologue with a concussion for 25 minutes, ambling around a Korean family’s farmhouse with surprisingly disconcerting candy apple red syrup creeping from his temple, live-narrating his own self-diagnosis, doing snippets of musical numbers, and just generally rambling as he tries to keep from fainting before his rescue arrives. A lot of oscillating between being about to keel over and quashing down his fear to put on a blithe front for an audience who can't even understand him, and a beautiful cow. In short, crafted for me special! I actually made this meme to explain to a friend why I was so undone by The Fabelmans (dork alert), but the thing is, it always worked because it was also about what it's about:

4x21 ‘The Novocaine Mutiny’ - Frank brings Hawkeye to trial for mutiny. He could, wildly, literally hang for this, but most of all: you bet there’s a Rashomon (scream).

4x25 ‘Deluge’ - I don’t know what to call these exactly, but they tend to do a couple of them a season. Usually, not always, they’re letter writing shows, with the letter narration forming the framework instead of an overarching plot, letting them do just a sequence of scenes somewhat related. Bullet point stories. This one however the scenes are intercut not with something else from the world of M*A*S*H, but actual historic footage from the period, in easily the most artistically experimental episode they’ve done yet. It’s all jarring juxtapositions of a very long surgical run with what was on TV back at home in 1952, with a jarring editing rhythm to match, which wasn’t fully working for me and then soooo working for me. Bit of an ‘O.R.’ echo, but so much odder and dreamier, in like a David Lynch way, and I think the sensation is well worth the list.

4x26 ‘The Interview’ - Anndd then you do this one next, which follows on the previous one almost like a brief bit of serialized storytelling. It’s all black & white and everyone is just being interviewed by a TV journalist about how they are (not) getting through it. At one point I paused to write this and let out a shaky yelp at discovering I was only 9 minutes in. At another point I had to pause to create my own break where there would normally be one just to let out mooore shaky sounds at an image Father Mulcahy had just described that will be lodged in my mind for the rest of my actual, actual life. Happy Season 4 Finale!!

Oh fuck. The obsession with River. I hate this character. Okay, I'm lying there. I like her when she appears in season 4. But let's be realistic, we understand enough who she is at that moment. It's not difficult to understand that she is a future lover of the doctor, or even a future wife, between the insinuation to the old married couple, the way River talks about their various encounters, that she knows his "real" name, etc. Then she dies. The thing is that although we see her again later in the series, she is never really explored. I never recognized the River from season 4 in the sequel. It seems like she changed personality with each appearance? And then, anti people complain about Rose saying she's too obsessed with the doctor but uh… Have they seen River? His life was defined around him. It's downright scary. (She's even a downright sociopath?!) Even her damn profession as an archaeologist she did it for the doctor, and not for herself. Why do people complain about Rose? With Rose I feel a real human connection. She really looks like a real individual. Nothing but I love it when the actress plays the cry. Usually, and even in Doctor Who, there's no shortage of it, women's cries always seem so… I don't know how to say, clean? At least Rose's crying is realistic. Honestly, I think people hate Rose because she is very realistic in terms of a human character. River on the other hand… Well in the end despite the time we see it we never manage to grasp it. All the things we would have really wanted to know/see about her were never revealed. Even her fucking dates that she had described in her diary, we never see them? Even though I think she talked about it once? How, as a spectator, am I supposed to relate to this relationship? Also, I find her quite unhealthy… I think the worst are those who insist on saying that she is the doctor's great love. In what ? Did he like it? Yes. We can't deny this shit. But great love? In what ? For what ? What makes her so-called above? Because they are married? Are we talking about the marriage that the doctor didn't even want in the first place and that River forced and that the doctor had to do so that she agreed to help save the universe? Is this your ultimate proof of great love?! Nothing to do with it, but I must say that on top of that, as someone who's not really a fan of the idea of marriage, seeing one "forced" in a so-called romance frankly disgusted me. Did the doctor love River? Apparently yes in this shit scenario. But is their marriage proof of this? Absolutely not ! We're still talking about the guy who ended up completely dividing himself for Rose's happiness (and then who before that had actually done his tenth regeneration based on her) and spent 4 and a half billion years trying to bring Clara back to life… If a forced marriage that the doctor accepts is the ultimate proof of love for his people there is a problem. The night on Darillium is much more proof of this, although in the end, not really, since the Doctor often does crazy things for the people he loves, on any scale. Anyway, I don't even see how I can take most of River's fans seriously, since some try to deny all of the Doctor's other romantic relationships. Anyway , every time I hear someone try to insinuate that the doctor never really liked Rose (most of them are River fans) I just want to laugh. Yes of course… The guy literally says that Rose is his only religion in the face of the devil, but he doesn't love her. For that alone, Rose is the doctor's undeniable great love. Denial is so funny.

While I enjoy Moffats writing the most (including when he wasn't showrunner) I think the Moffat & Davies #1 "Eras" are simply different and you don't need to tear one down to uplift the other.

This explains why I don't like Chinball's era— yes its very long but it is very thoughtful and genuinely evaluates the writing. Also it has chapters so you don't need to watch the entire video.

The Flux is awesome but was completely unfinished with massive loose ends. The doubling down on it without addressing loose ends makes it very annoying to me. But it had some of the best characterization of Chibnall's era. Vinder FTW <3

Favorite NuWho companion is Rory, second is Donna.

11 is probably "My Doctor," since that seems to be a designation people make for some reason. But I love the second and third series of 12.

Actually Canon: River isn't proto-Time Lord just because she was conceived on the TARDIS

Pick the canon: Time Lords are an aristocracy not a species. Gallifreyans who attend the academy & look into the time vortex, gain 12 regenerations becoming Time Lords. Perhaps children of Time Lords are encouraged or even forced to join the aristocracy. In fact, this is one of many many options when discussing Gallifreyens vs Time Lords, so its more so the canon I chose to go with rather than a headcanon. (Since I've never read any actual stories about looming I disregard it; I also disregard Timeless Child in this.)

Pick the canon: The Doctor's mother was the woman in "The End of Time" and she is not the same as the woman in "Hell bent." The writers endorsed us picking what we wanted in both case. Davies identified the first women as his mother in his original idea but it didn't land in the final script, so clarified it could be any trustworthy Time Lady. Moffat said he was leaving it to audience to decide if they are the same woman.

The Husbands of River Song

Okay, this is gonna be a long one, kids. I know it’s the unpopular opinion, but I have issues with River - that’s a post for another day though. 😅

So, now that I’ve finally recovered from Face the Raven - Hell Bent (I mean, recovered as I’m likely ever gonna be), I decided to finally watch this and boy do I have thoughts. I even made gifs. lol. 

TL;DR - basically, the whole “in love with River” thing is more kindness than anything and even with the block, he still remembers Clara. 

To start though - really, this whole neuro-block thing makes no f***ing sense at all. Like, he doesn’t wonder why there’s graffiti all over the box with the girl from the diner on it?! He sees a message on the chalkboard, but doesn’t react or think ‘hey, that’s weird, someone’s been in here’? So he can remember some of what they did, but not her? 🤦‍♀️ Convoluted much? Ugh. Anyway...

1) The TARDIS was trying to ‘cheer him up’ from a melancholy he couldn’t have understood, right? Obviously it also knew Clara and everything between them, having been there for most of it. The TARDIS’ memories weren’t erased, so that’s a real sad start right off the top. Geez.

2) River - the supposed genius, ‘great love’ of the Doctor, his ‘wife’ of all people, couldn’t figure out it was him? Really? Or as he said, “Seriously?” Even after he flat out said it like 5 times?!  Look, Clara MF Oswald would have figured out it was him, I guarantee. Just sayin.

3)  DOCTOR: “Stop holding my hand, people don't do that to me.” Ok, ouch,  right in the “things he’s forgotten” feels, I see how this is gonna go. 

4) Here, however, I think he absolutely was still having bits of memories about Clara (even if he didn’t realize it/couldn’t see her?). The first one that struck me was in the restaurant. I whipped up this GIF - just look at his face here:

He is so uneasy. You can see he’s thinking it’s familiar somehow, but he can’t place it, so it’s upsetting him. Even River asks why he’s frowning. He blames it on concern for the deadlock seal, but I don’t think so... ’cause, well, hello:

5) “I don't like lying down people.” It struck me as such an odd comment. This one may be a stretch, but all I could think was...

6) I’m big into body language cues, especially with people who can’t seem to use their words to say how they feel *cough* 12 *cough*. When Flemming is asking River about the Doctor, he’s watching her. BUT when he says “ You're the woman he loves” - he immediately glares at him & looks away, swallowing hard. 

Aversion of the eyes relates to uncomfortable feelings & embarrassment. The hard swallow indicates high stress & embarrassment as well. If the statement were true, there would be no reason for him to feel ashamed. He feels bad. 🤷‍♀️

7) Speaking of body language... her reaction when she finally realizes it’s him:

Looks *super* thrilled, doesn’t she? WTF. To add insult to injury, the first thing she says is that he needs to dye his hair. Are they serious with this? I realize it was supposed to be funny, but I didn’t think it was, she looked 100% dismayed.

8) River asks how he managed to get a new face and he simply replies “ A thing happened.” So...does he not remember what or how? That the only reason he is even still alive is because of a ‘thing’ that is 5″2′, with big brown eyes who loved him so much, that she literally begged the Time Lords to save him? 😒

9) As the towers play music, River notices him looking very sad and even asks if he’s crying. People assume it’s because he knows it’s their last night, BUT I disagree and posit that it was making him think of Clara for several reasons: 

Of course he averts the question, but moments later he says... EVERY CHRISTMAS IS LAST CHRISTMAS! Literally. Quoting. Her. 

River says she expects him to save her somehow and he flat out tells her I will torture myself for 4.5 billion years and burn this whole fucking universe to the ground to try and save you no. Adding, rather bitterly, that he can’t always save the day and there's no such thing as happy ever after. Hmmm...

The Doctor, about the towers, “when you least expect it, but always when you need it the most  (ahem) -pause for him to get INCREDIBLY choked up- there is a song.”  Literally the last thing Clara would ever say to him:

           You said memories become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs.

10)  RIVER: You can't expect a monolith to love you back.

       DOCTOR: No, you can't.

       I mean... that seemed pretty clear to me, especially with her reaction.

11) Supposedly a night on Darillium is 24 years, but does that necessarily equate to earth years? This was about the most out of character thing. I’m sorry, but when have you EVER known the Doctor to be able to stand being in one place for a long time (not including 3 because he was exiled without a working TARDIS, so that was unwillingly). Not to mention leaving Earth unprotected for a quarter century??? 

12) Having the hotel built, making her a sonic and staying with her are all touted as grand gestures that validate his love for her. I've never gotten that vibe with them though. Whenever I see the Doctor interact with River - I feel like it’s watching that one friend that falls all over themselves about a guy who’s really not interested. But he’s nice about it, not wanting to hurt her feelings - because he can see how much she idolizes him and he *does* care for her in his own way. But is River Song his ‘true love’? Absolutely not. Sorry. 

13) No Kiss?! You finally have an “age appropriate” (insert eyeroll) woman, they’re in this big romantic setting, on supposedly their last night, on Christmas and nothing? I feel like that kinda speaks volumes on its own.

As an aside, I’d also like to point out in 7x13 when River begged him not to go into his own timestream. He had no idea if he’d make it out alive, which if he didn’t, would have ended their story. Instead, he sweetly kissed her goodbye and yeeted himself right in there with no hesitation - all to save Clara. 

Oh, did I mention the 4.5 BILLION YEARS OF TORTURE? Ok, just checking. 

Airing only a couple weeks after “Hell Bent” felt like kind of a slap in the face in a way, if that makes sense? Just seemed to me more like fanservice for the Yowzah crowd & Moffat wanting to wrap up her storyline before leaving the show. 

This is all just my opinions, and how I see it. It’s okay if we disagree.  ✌💙

okay, here’s one i’ll probably never get around to writing - a rewrite of the wedding of river song (the episode with the paradox) in which a bunch of past companions are, gee, i don’t know, actually doing something to help the world? and where the doctor isn’t manipulated into marrying river against his will lol. every time i rewatch that episode i see this concept so clearly but i doubt i’ll ever have the time for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i dont want to start ship war but its really hard considering that they compare actual healthy relationship full of love, and affection, and fondness with moffat era characters... its so transparent that they’re his fans and so pressed. sorry what kind of relationship did river song even had with the doctor when half of the time he didnt give a fuck about her? and don’t start on The MaRriAge which was a f farce but okey dokey. what else is there about her that doesnt revolve around one man?? but rose is the selfish bitch who dared to have feelings toward the doctor, i swear when does the stupidy stop?? NEVER???

Just saw a post in the Rose tag about not pitting ships against eachother and that’s fair in a vacuum but they were specifically comparing Doctor and Rose and Doctor and River and the problems I have with Doctor and River have little to do with my feeling about Doctor and Rose. The Doctor/River relationship is fundamentally toxic and he treats her so poorly it’s unbelievable. She prioritizes him not getting his feelings hurt when he hurts her and then goes on to advise Amy do the same, which just grosses me out.

Also, the post says River pulled the Doctor off of his pedestal, which is just laughable. Like she practically worships the guy and literally her whole life revolves around him. She sasses at him occasionally but it’s always in a flirtatious way.

Anyway it’s super annoying when people are like “idk why Doctor/Rose and Doctor/River can’t coexist as ships” bc even if Rose never existed I would find Doctor/River to be a bad ship and I’m tired of people dismissing criticisms of it as shipping wars.

Like I have no issue with 12/Clara and 13/Yasmin…the Doctor and River are just toxic

I’ll be scrolling through ao3 and I’ll see something along the lines of Doctor/OC. And of course the OC will be a time lord which annoys me. Because it’s like, they’re acting like of course the Doctor will fall in love with this character if they’re a time lord. But that’s not the case at all! That’s not the point! The fact they’re the same species shouldn’t be the unifying factor between them! But it’s all emphasizing the idea that the Doctor could never fall in love with a regular old human. It’s putting him even further on a pedestal when we’ve seen that’s not true at all! 

Rose Tyler was a regular old human with no mystery surrounding her. Sure, there was bad wolf but no one actually connected that to Rose until she became the bad wolf. And I can’t remember who said this (it was definitely on Tumblr) but they were like, Rose Tyler was the solution to bad wolf. She wasn’t the answer. It wasn’t like with Clara Oswald who made herself into this mystery and the Doctor had to figure her out (instead of dealing with his grief). 

But anyway, the point is Rose is human. And I believe the Doctor fell in love with her largely because of that. Rose was so connected to her emotions and everyone else’s and that’s such a human trait I think. As a time lord the Doctor often failed in that aspect and Rose covered up that weakness by being there. It was like the doctor said, the domestics were her expertise (or something along those lines). They were a team and one’s strengths covered the other’s weakness.

It’s like, by doing that it’s giving into the idea that the Doctor’s significant other has to be more. They have to be able to match the Doctor so closely or it’s wrong or something. Take River Song. Moffat was basically like, the Doctor needs an equal, so he makes the Doctor this person. This person who is supposed to be superior to Rose, but falls flat. Moffat makes River Song be educated and dangerous and a puzzle and an almost time lord. But the Doctor can’t connect to this person, because they’re too alike. And the Doctor can’t stand himself on the best of days, so it drives him insane to be around her. He can’t handle everything she represents and he hates what he sees when he looks at her.

Back to the time lord OC, though. It’s like taking a long look at the Doctor and thinking he cares so much about species when it comes to relationships. Like, simply being the same species would make him fall in love with someone. But that’s so superficial when he never liked the time lords much anyway. He never wanted to kill them, but he didn’t want to exactly spend all his time with them.

I just have a lot of emotions about this, because a time lord OC feels a lot like saying Rose could never have been enough for the Doctor when she really was.
