On August 2, 2023, Tablet editor David Samuels interviewed David Garrow, author of Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a massive attack on Israel and committed the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. In light of those events, and the recent attack on Israel directly from Iran, consider some of Samuels’ own statements during “The Obama Factor” interview:

The sheer amount of political capital and focus Obama put into achieving the JCPOA during his second term, to the near-exclusion of other goals, suggests that the deal was central to his politics. It also carries more than a whiff of the kind of politics in which the American Empire is seen not just as unexceptional, but also, in some ways, as actively evil. It was a politics born out of the confluence of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, which saw a racist war abroad being used to protect a racist power structure at home. That old alliance of civil rights, anti-imperialism, and identity politics made the Democratic Party that Obama positioned himself to lead—college-educated, corporate-controlled—seem cool, allowing it to use post-1960s radical ideology as a language to sell stuff.

In the absence of what was once American journalism, it is hard to know which portrait of Obama’s post-presidency is truer to life: Obama as a celebrity-obsessed would-be billionaire, or as a would-be American Castro, reshaping American society from his basement, in his sweats.

The election of Joe Biden in 2020 gave the Obamas even more reasons to stay in town. The whispers about Biden’s cognitive decline, which began during his bizarre COVID-sheltered basement campaign, were mostly dismissed as partisan attacks on a politician who had always been gaffe-ridden. Yet as President Biden continued to fall off bicycles, misremember basic names and facts, and mix long and increasingly weird passages of Dada-edque nonsense with autobiographical whoppers during his public appearances, it became hard not to wonder how poor the president’s capacities really were and who was actually making decisions in a White House staffed top to bottom with core Obama loyalists. When Obama turned up at the White House, staffers and the press crowded around him, leaving President Biden talking to the drapes—which is not a metaphor but a real thing that happened. I have heard from more than one source that there are regular meetings at Obama’s house in Kalorama involving top figures in the current White House, with Secret Service and cars outside. I don’t write about it because it’s not my lane. There are over a thousand reporters in Washington, and yet there are zero stakeouts of Obama’s mansion, if only to tell us who is coming and going. But he clearly has his oar in.  The easy explanation, of course, is that Joe Biden is not running that part of his administration. Obama is. He doesn’t even have to pick up the phone because all of his people are already inside the White House. They hold the Iran file. Tony Blinken doesn’t.

Rob Malley is just one person. Brett McGurk. Dan Shapiro in Israel. Lisa Monaco in Justice. Susan Rice running domestic policy. It’s turtles all the way down. There are obviously large parts of White House policymaking that belong to Barack Obama because they’re staffed by his people, who worked for him and no doubt report back to him. Personnel is policy, as they say in Washington.

Which to me is a very odd and kind of spooky arrangement. Spooky, because it is happening outside the constitutional framework of the U.S. government, and yet somehow it’s been placed off the list of permitted subjects to report on. Which is a pretty good indicator of the extent to which the information we get, and public reactions to that information, is being successfully controlled. How and by whom remain open questions, the quick answer to which is that the American press has become a subset of partisan comms.  What scared me back then was coming to understand that a new milieu had been created consisting of party operatives, the people in the FBI and the CIA who are carrying out White House policy, and the press. It is all one world now. And that’s something people still seem loathe to admit, even to themselves, in part because it puts them in a state of dissonance with this new kind of controlled consensus that the press maintains, which is obviously garbage. But if you question it, you’re some kind of nut.

But historically speaking, Jews are not, or were not, a particularly American obsession, except among some morons and leather fetishists on the right. But they are a major obsession on the periphery of the American empire, where envy and fear of the mythic role that Jews supposedly play in Washington, because of Israel, are defining emotions, regardless of the facts. So how do you talk all this foundation-land, community-organizer shit and then preside over the transformation of the country into a Gilded Age oligarchy? Maybe I just answered my own question: Obama is the Magic Negro of the billionaire industrial complex. And targeting Jews as outsiders and pushing them outside the circle was the way that the Gilded Age oligarchy consolidated itself in America, back then and also now.

The WBD tactic of scrapping fully made films for tax breaks is predatory and anti-competitive. As the Justice Department and FTC revise their antitrust guidelines they should review this conduct. As someone remarked, it’s like burning down a building for the insurance money.

While BATGIRL's footage appears to have been deleted entirely and that that movie can't ever be released - because it does not exist, it's apparent that a copy of SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT exists within Warner's vault and that it hasn't been erased.

Imagine, our government (for the U.S. readers, of course) pulling a string or two resulting in the release of a locked-up Scooby-Doo movie... Like, wow. And let's get FINAL SPACE out of that vault too, please.

Update: According to the link from the last post up top, apparently the director is selling the movie different studios after multiple creative and others called and canceled their appointments with Warner due to them understandably not trusting them with letting their projects seeing the light of day. The Justice Department and FCC is also being asked by Congress Representative, Joaquin Castro, to investigate and review Warner Bros., their lot, and their conduct for being anti-competitive among other things. While I am very, very happy about the news that Coyote Vs. Acme will get a second chance to see the light of day, I am still upset and mad that Warner Bros. Even thought of cancelling it after the massive positive reception it got from people who saw it. While the movie may get a second chance, I’m still gonna say #ReleaseCoyoteVsAcme due to my personal distrust of Warner Bros./David Zaslav and not fully trusting them to let them release it after their bad choices and broken promises they made throughout the years.!

Regardless, if they reveal who will distribute the movie and actually release the movie, I will be very happy seeing it and finally watching it but for now, I’m just gonna still say #ReleaseCoyoteVsAcme.

I find Barack Obama deeply sympathetic as a person. I identify with him emotionally. Yet there was something about this fictional character that he created actually becoming president that helped precipitate the disaster that we are living through now. The sheer amount of political capital and focus Obama put into achieving the JCPOA during his second term, to the near-exclusion of other goals, suggests that the deal was central to his politics. It also carries more than a whiff of the kind of politics in which the American Empire is seen not just as unexceptional, but also, in some ways, as actively evil. It was a politics born out of the confluence of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, which saw a racist war abroad being used to protect a racist power structure at home. That old alliance of civil rights, anti-imperialism, and identity politics made the Democratic Party that Obama positioned himself to lead—college-educated, corporate-controlled—seem cool, allowing it to use post-1960s radical ideology as a language to sell stuff.

In the absence of what was once American journalism, it is hard to know which portrait of Obama’s post-presidency is truer to life: Obama as a celebrity-obsessed would-be billionaire, or as a would-be American Castro, reshaping American society from his basement, in his sweats.

lmaoo mood. idk about Horrible People™, i find it hard to say that i actually know anything about celebrities cuz we all only know what they want us to and i literally dont follow any celebrities at all, but the biggest scandals are for dom sherwood (jace's actor, was caught saying the F slur in a livestream when he didn't know he was being filmed) and david castro (raphael's actor, took a pic with trump's honestly idk what he is but he was directly involved with trump's campaign and when asked about whether or not he supports trump he basically evaded the question so yeah). there's probably more chisme and drama around but thats all i know, im really not the best person to ask tbh jdndid

oh and javier muñoz (lorenzo's actor) was also involved in some twitter drama where he was rude to a fan and lots of fans were mad but when i looked into it i found that not only did he apologize but he was triggered because he had just gotten a death threat letter with wording very similar to that person's tweet (which was a coincidence), which he gets a lot of as a latino, openly gay, openly HIV-positive person, so i dont hold it against him and think ppl who do are kinda being assholes, but yeah, that was a thing too

Okay so I’ll freely admit I haven’t watched the series finale of Shadowhunters yet but from what I’m reading it was a hot ass mess especially in regards to Clary and honestly... thank god the shit is over. I’ve been saying for weeks I’m glad it’s cancelled but god damn did it really just go full the fuck off the rails from season twos premiere onward. From making Izzy a drug addict, to retconning her (and technically her mother) into white girls, to the treatment of Maia and all three of her relationships (I’ll pop bottles that Jordan’s ass died though), to how they portrayed Victor and only brought his ass back to further demonize a black guy, to every thing with Luke going to prison because of a psycho white girl whose ENTIRE arc more than likely only existed because the actresses is dating Alberto (let’s not forget Sarah Hyland was partially cast cause she was dating Domophobe), to just so much fucking terribleness. That’s not even getting into the behind the scenes bullshit of David the Trump Supporter, Dominic the Homophobe, Luke Baines annoying ass, and other various problematic behavior from cast mates.

Like, I’m just glad it’s over before it somehow got even worse that it already was. I appreciate the actors/actresses (well, besides those listed above and Emeraude) for all their hard work and hope they do well but this show truly just let all it’s fans down in the end. Now, if I really understand the fuckery that happened at the end I feel most sorry for Kat/Clary. Her character literally had her entire life screwed over and the finale didn’t even focus on her, the main character... what kind of shit is that? Anyways, goodbye shadowhunters it’s been... well, it’s been.

I hate Dom, I really do. Not only was what happened ugly in every way possible, but I also feel it somehow tainted the show for me. As if I’ve just lost any trust in it. I’m no longer excited about the spoilers or interviews or some other stuff I normally enjoyed. Instead, I’m stressed and anxious all the time because as stupid as it may sound now I expect the worst from s3, from the cast&crew, from almost everyone :/ Fuck that homophobe and his lame ass “apology” that I don’t buy.

I completely understand people feeling this way. I had a day of feeling like this, too. Like I questioned how I felt about Matt, what I thought about his reaction, etc. And I hated that I had to do that. So I understand that and I respect that. 

I don’t feel that way for myself. Mostly because I don’t think that’s a word Matt was okay with hearing. I think his reaction was him trying to professionally contain what was happening in that moment. Do I think he knows and has always known Dom is a homophobe? Yes. Do I expect him to rant and rail and fight Dom every time it shows? No. He’s at work. I live in the south in the US. I have to deal with a lot of homophobes and racists at work. I can’t tell them all to shut up. All I can do is express back my own opinions so that they know I am not a safe place for their hate. Sadly, we all still have to make money and live. 

So do I wish I could have seen him flip out? Would it have made me feel better? Yes. But I also felt better hearing him tell Dom he shouldn’t have said that and that it wasn’t cool. Not something he said so everyone would hear it and he would look good. It was something you could barely hear. 

As for the rest of the cast, listen. I, like so many others, only claim Harry, Matt, Isaiah, Alisha, and Alberto. The times that Matt and Harry fucked up, they acknowledged it, took responsibility, and did better. I don’t expect them to be perfect. But I expect them to try to be better. Harry and Matt do. 

Dom, Em, and David are way too problematic to bother with. Not only are they problematic but they stubbornly and almost proudly remain so. 

So I’m not going to let Dom take away my show. I love Magnus, I love Alec, I love Luke, and Simon and Maia. I never gave a single flying fuck about Jace anyways. So fuck him. Here’s hoping his screen time in 3b is reduced at least a bit.
