There are folks on Twitter talks and in discords having chat sessions not discussing the quality of Nicki's "diss" track, but dissecting the crash and burn of her entire career. Like that Big Foot song is not doing what she thinks it's doing but instead, educating people on Megan's Law, grappling with icons who are not doing the important job of elder work and bringing in the next generation in the game, her drug use, her being male-identified so far up the ass that she is anti-Black women, using Roman Polanski as an alter ego (and simply changing her persona's last name to Zolanski. Polanski is a convicted child rapist who fled to France to avoid extradition--so she has a fixation on centering men who rape), and more importantly, how other iconic Black women in the rap game from way back never fuck with her. It's sad how her legacy is spiraling like Bill Cosby's--being a once respected icon and then going into the elder years with a tarnished reputation that can't be defended. This is not good at all. I think too many people have decided that media consumption (or refusal to consume some media) is not only a form of activism, but the highest form of activism.

So to be clear you can read a book, watch a movie etc without agreeing with the actions or the view points of the characters even the main character. Watching John Wick doesn't mean you believe in guns as the answer to problems. Watching Dirty Harry doesn't mean you endorse police violence. We can go on and on here, but basically watching or reading a piece of media doesn't mean you agree with the characters and their actions and often times media is made intentionally complex to make a character questionable or indeed outright bad while we still are made to understand them.

You also can read or watch a work and not agree with the author's politics. HP Lovecraft was a horrible racist, antisemite, hated women etc, but he's long long dead, hell Walt Disney hated Jews, hated them, loathed them, that doesn't mean you're a Nazi if you watch Snow White.

Of course life is complex so there are a few areas where you should boycott buying someone's work. One is when the author is objectively a horrible human being and is still alive so you buying their work will support them. This would be like Woody Allen, R. Kelly, Bill Cosby, and Roman Polanski to name a few off the top of my head, they're horrible sex criminals, your support allows Allen, Cosby and Polanski to support their life styles sadly out of jail.

a second group is when authors (or I guess copyright holders) have political views you disagree with and have made it clear they will spend the money you give them on their politics. This is JK Rowling of course, but also Orson Scott Card, author of Ender's Game, who is a devote Mormon and has given a lot of his money to the Church but also to anti-gay movements like Prop8 back in 2008, it was on the board of a national anti-gay marriage org, any ways buy Ender's Game used is what I'm saying.

Most books are just books, they may have themes or ideas in there that are political or cultural and you may feel some way about those but mostly they're stories first. However a small number of books are political manifesto dressed up as work of fiction. Most famously, Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged which pretend to be novels but really are odes to Rand's political philosophy that greed, and selfishness are really good things and helping the poor is evil. If you want to know what the worst people in government are talking about and want to suffer through some of the worst writing imaginable, pirate it. Rand didn't believe the government should help people so you know no copyright for you.

Finally there are a very small, tiny handful of books you really just shouldn't read. I'm thinking here of like The Turner Diaries. Like Atlas Shrugged, The Turner Diaries are political manifesto pretending to be a novel. It's basically the Bible of neo-Nazis so unless you're an academic studying the modern white supremacy after WWII, you have no reason to ever read it (same with Mein Kampf, but I've limited myself to works of fiction)

20 years ago...more actually...I had this shipping website for the Harry Potter fandom. It was really popular and even though I haven't done anything for it for years I kept it up as an archive because I'd gotten requests to do so. But these days I'm at a point where I can't read anymore of JK Rowling's toxic word-vomit, anti-trans bullshit and it makes me really just want to shut it all down. I don't want to promote anything by her. I'm not currently active in that fandom at all.

I feel the same way about watching anything with Bill Cosby or Woody Allen. I feel like enjoying their 'products' is, in a way, still supporting them. But at the same time, I feel strange about it because it feels like what I did for the website was mine. My ideas, my take on it. It was so much work and I'm proud of a lot of things I did with it.

If I found out the head writer/creator of Shameless was some horrible child rapist or something...of course I wouldn't want to promote anything he/she/they were doing but I wouldn't want to delete my fanfics or the fanart that I've done. I still love Gallavich.

I'm so torn on this. It's a weird feeling to morally just want to draw a sharp line. But at what point does fandom continue promoting a hateful person?

Timmie Rogers (born Timothy Louis Ancrum (July 4, 1915 – December 17, 2006) was a popular comedian and entertainer. He was one of the first African American entertainers who refused to wear blackface or dress in dirty tattered clothing while performing. Ellis isn't the first and won't be the last who turns out to be a pretty repugnant person, as a person, while at the same time very, very good at what he does. Unironically, yeah, the unfortunate truth is that I found this season of Castlevania to be about one-tenth the storytelling quality of what Ellis could deliver, but Ellis is also very large shoes to fill -- and despite that, I still have zero respect for Ellis as a person.

This is something that each person has to decide for their own. Either they roll with death-of-the-author and try to see the work as independent of the person who crafted it, or they can't disassociate author from work and thus choose to see the author's works as tainted by the author's behavior.

Neither is a totally comfortable place to be, and man, it does suck sometimes realizing you have to decide where you draw the line. Roald Dahl? Anti-Semitic. Bill Cosby? Rapist. Nathan Bedford Forrest? KKK leader. J.K Rowling? Transphobe. Roman Polanski? Rapist. Jack London? Racist. Gertrude Stein? Fascist and pro-Nazi. E.B. White? Racist.

If I were to list every single author who was/is a known sexual predator, this post would end up a page (or more) long. There's no disputing that. And if someone considers (like I do) that Ellis is also a damn good writer, well, it's up to that person to weigh which matters more and whether this ends their ability to enjoy anything Ellis created.

So the fact that people have enjoyed Ellis' writing and the fact that Ellis is a sexual predator are both true. It sucks and it's not comfortable, but it's to each person to decide whether the two can co-exist or if one nullifies the other (in either direction). You've made clear where you fall on that divide, but that's not a choice you can make for anyone else.

This Castlevania season has gone over so badly people are unironically defending Warren Ellis.

Even if you like his edgelord "too cool for school" writing style, the fact remains he coerced 100 women and non-binary individuals into sexual relationships with the promise of giving them an "in" into publishing.

"But they were of age!" It's a casting couch situation. He essentially blackmailed them into sexual relationships under threat of not having a job. It doesn't matter their age, the fact is they didn't have a choice, because they felt if they didn't go along with him, they would essentially be blacklisted from writing for anything bigger than a blog.
