I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger.
The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.

is a psychotherapist and writer in Seattle. She has three poetry books: truth be bold—Serenading Life & Death in the Age of AIDS, No Father Can Save Her, and a chapbook, Case Walking: An AIDS Case Manager Wails Her Blues.

The Interview
1. What inspired you to write poetry?
After my father’s death, before I turned twelve, I started to record my dreams and write in a journal. Writing helped during this difficult time, I was bereft. In my fantasy life poets were cool and I longed to be around people who were different. After my mother moved us to the city, I signed up for an evening poetry class at a local college in Queens. I was barely a teenager, and had to depend on my uncle to drive me. He had a bias against poets, the whole way there he yelled about beatniks sitting on floors, saying he worked hard to provide chairs for his family to sit on. I had a poem in my pocket and was terrified. The adult poets talked about poets I didn’t know. I felt like an outsider and realized I needed to understand more. Because of the lack of support, I didn’t go back to that group. Getting back to poetry took a long time, I had to move away from my family and become financially independent.
2. Who introduced you to poetry?
When I was finally living on my own, I started investigating the writing world. Living in Manhattan I found classes at the Y and signed up. I read Peter Elbow’s books on writing. Finding other writers was helpful, I joined a group of women poets for feedback. Then I joined a local chapter of the Feminist Writers’ Guild; we brought in May Sarton to read, and they sponsored me to travel to a conference in Chicago where I gave my first public reading. Judy Grahn’s poetry inspired me, I wanted to write feminist poetry to change the world. Audre Lorde was well known and I learned she taught at Hunter College. I applied to CUNY so I could study with her and got a Bachelor degree with a double major of Creative Writing and Women’s Studies. I’d say Judy Grahn’s book, The Work of a Common Woman, had the most influence, she was such a strong lesbian feminist and I was in that community.
3. How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?
When I started my journey as a poet I was unaware of the cannon. Audre started us out with an e.e. cummings poem, but she didn’t teach the older poets. She had us writing and workshopping our poems, reading and going to readings and journaling our impressions. I’ve done much catch-up. A few of the older male poets I admire include William Carlos Williams, William Stafford, Charles Simic, James Tate, Russell Edison, Richard Hugo. A generation in between when poetry was already moving away from rhyme to free verse. And with some of these it is their books about writing poetry that I love. I’ve read Gerard Manley Hopkins, Shakespeare sonnets, and some of the older poets, but I’m not drawn to their work.
4. What is your daily writing routine?
I do not have a routine. Writing means a lot of things; writing new work, editing work, sending out work, composing collections, writing about the work (as in this interview), taking time to do nothing, applying to programs, residencies, grants. There is so much it’s overwhelming. And I easily get overwhelmed. So I’ve learned to be not too hard on myself for what I could be doing at any given moment. I spend far too much time on social media. But I keep a journal that I then cull work from. Plus, I write other genres: memoir and essays, for a few years I wrote articles for a health corner column in a newsletter.
5. What motivates you to write?
It’s a drive to the page, there were periods I did not have that drive and I just existed, lived life, worked and had fun with friends or a partner. Then there are periods where my writing ramps up: I take a class, begin to focus on a particular project, get excited about a call or networking. The newest thing I’ve done with a friend is to start a reading series at a local café once a month. It’s been more stressful than I anticipated. When my last poetry book was published I dedicated over three years to promote it.
6. What is your work ethic?
My first career as a laboratory technician lasted fourteen years; I worked at one lab for over eight years. Then I went back to school and had odd jobs that included my own business cleaning apartments in New York City. After that I did secretarial work, moved to Seattle and went back to school for a Masters in counselling. With that degree I worked for twenty-one years in AIDS services, eighteen of those years for the same agency in different capacities. I work hard and steady. I write hard, too, when I write. Semi-retired now, I have a small private therapy practice and my goal is to devote more time to writing, but I’m also the president of my condo Board. Responsibility and service are a big part of my work ethic, as is doing work from love, which I did working in AIDS services for twenty-one years. When I worked where they had a union I was a rep, and I’ve been part of two union negotiations.
7. How did the writers you read when you were young influence you today?
This is impossible to answer because I’m not sure how the books I loved as a child influenced my writing today. I read Heidi eight times, and all the Nancy Drew mystery novels.
8. Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?
There are so many excellent authors! I have to say two I’ve worked with: Louise DeSalvo, I found her when I started Hunter College. She taught a different literature class each semester and I took every class of hers I could. She was a brilliant Virginia Wolf scholar with a PhD in the Deconstruction of Literature. Generous and supportive of her students she bestowed confidence. She constantly had new books coming out in different genres,. Two of her books I keep ready at my fingertips: Writing as a Way of Healing : How Telling Our Stories Transforms our Lives, and The Art of Slow Writing: Reflections on Time, Craft, and Creativity. She also has several memoirs, academic books, fiction and an anthology she edited of Italian American women. She died in October 2018. The other writer is Tom Spanbauer, he trademarked Dangerous Writing. I love his book The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon, so when I heard he was in Portland teaching Dangerous Writing workshops I wanted to study with him. For a year I went back and forth to Portland for several workshops and love his way of teaching. He is open and vulnerable, providing a safe space to write dangerous things that are hard to get onto the page. I’ve read each of his novels, and from him learned even though I am not a fiction writer, what I write has value. There are many other excellent poets and writers I admire.
9. Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?
Well I consider myself an artist, and have called myself a health artist. Of all the arts, writing is what I’ve spent the most time to develop. I’ve taken art classes and I practice movement work. I discovered Continuum in 1988 and it has changed my life several times. For ten years, from 1997 to 2007, I ran workshops that combined Continuum movement and writing after taking Emilie Conrad and Rebecca Mark’s Poetry in Motion Intensive. Emilie was the founder of Continuum Movement, she died in 2014. In my workshop we experimented with breath, audible breath and movement that perturbed our interior world, then listened and allowed hand-to-page exploration. From my first Poetry in Motion I started what became a large body of writing about my work in HIV/AIDS.
10. What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?”
The best advice is to read a lot of poetry. There is so much good poetry available and you learn by the process of reading a wide range. Also, take classes and find a group where you get together and read your work out loud, then exchange feedback. Or find a group where you use a prompt, write for a timed period then go around and read what was written, either with no feedback or only positive. You’ll begin to get more fluid putting pen to page. It’s best to read it right away without worrying or thinking about it too much. If you have good mentors along the way and the right support I don’t think an MFA is so important.
11. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.
I’m working on a hybrid memoir and searching for publishers that will answer directly to an author as a first step. As a hybrid form it includes journal excerpts and dreams. I hope to have a my early health essays included in an addendum.
On my to-do list is to develop my next poetry manuscript and start sending it out. But first I need to form an arc from my many poems written in the past several years. Each book birth takes a lot of energy and my last book promotion has been slowly winding down; although I will be on a panel at AWP2020 in San Antonio related to that book reading my poetry.

Alzheimer’s Drug Failure Leaves Scientists Seeking New Direction
Drugmakers have tried again and again to treat Alzheimer’s disease by targeting a compound in the brain known as beta amyloid.
Again and again, they’ve failed.
This week, Biogen Inc. and Eisai Co. joined the ranks of frustrated companies that spent years nurturing expensive, experimental therapies that ultimately fell short. Many scientists and drug developers are now asking whether it could be time to find another approach to treat the pernicious memory-wasting disease.
The brain has been a black box for drug developers, but focusing on beta amyloid has long been viewed as the best hope for treating the mysterious ailment that affects millions of Americans and their families. For many, the hypothesis became an article of faith, motivating billions of dollars in research spending and putting thousands of patients through clinical trials.
“It’s not science anymore,” said George Perry, a biology professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a long-time critic of the amyloid theory. “It has turned into a religion.”
Biogen and Eisai will discontinue two late-stage trials designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the drug, aducanumab, which has cost the partners more than $830 million over the past three years. The results showed that the drug was unlikely to help patients, the companies said in a statement, and the discontinuation wasn’t related to safety concerns.
The companies said they would continue to work together on other Alzheimer’s therapies.
Secret Sauce
Beta amyloid is a protein that collects in the brain and, in people with Alzheimer’s, clumps into plaques. Drugmakers have pursued the idea that by clearing beta amyloid with drugs, they might stop the disease. But it’s still not known if the protein is the cause of Alzheimer’s, or merely a neurological memorial to damage already done.
The latest failure, following the unraveling of similar experimental beta amyloid drugs from Merck & Co., Eli Lilly & Co., and Pfizer Inc. in large-scale trials, has scientists questioning whether the persistent focus on targeting the compound has prevented investment in testing drugs against other possible Alzheimer’s targets. Even so, researchers had thought that perhaps the Biogen compound might be different from previous failures.
“The hope was that maybe they have the secret sauce. Maybe they have the form of antibody that’s the most potent,” said Samuel Gandy, associate director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in New York. “I admit to you, we are getting pretty desperate.”
Each time an anti-amyloid medication fails, the theory shifts, said Perry. Its proponents argue that a flawed drug didn’t hit the right form of amyloid, or didn’t target patients at early-enough stages of the disease.
“I admit to you, we are getting pretty desperate.”
The fizzling of Biogen’s therapy in two large studies is the second such failure this year. In January, Roche Holding AG mostly abandoned another beta-amyloid compound, stopping two large studies after concluding that they would fail.
“We are running out of excuses” for why beta-amyloid treatments aren’t working, said Zaven Khachaturian, editor-in-chief of the medical journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. The field has become so focused on amyloid it has a difficult time shifting gears, he said, but drugmakers “keep trying, hoping that the path they are on is going to give blockbuster drugs.”
Part of the science supporting the theory goes back to genetics. Some patients have been found with mutations in genes involved in beta-amyloid production, and are predisposed to get Alzheimer’s. But that doesn’t prove that amyloid is behind more common cases of the disease.
“It has never been established that it is causal,” says Murali Doraiswamy, an Alzheimer’s expert at Duke University Health System. He said the field needs to regroup. “We need to re-evaluate all of the ongoing trials, given the latest information.”
Billions Gone
While numerous drugmakers have missed the mark with beta-amyloid treatments, Biogen could be forced to consider a dramatic revamp of its business. News of the trials’ failure carved off nearly a third of the biotechnology company’s market value; its shares ended down 29 percent on Thursday at $226.88, suffering their worst single-day decline since 2005 and wiping out more than $18 billion in market capitalization.
“It’s clear now, aducanumab is dead,” Mizuho Securities biotech analyst Salim Syed wrote in a note to investors after downgrading the shares to neutral from a buy rating. “The one-liner here is we just don’t see much to be excited about.”
On Friday, Eisai shares dropped 17 percent in trading in Japan, the biggest one-day drop for the stock since 1988.
Drug companies have seen billion of dollars vanish in the quest to develop a drug that could slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. When Eli Lilly revealed that a similar drug failed in late-stage trials in 2016, its CEO disclosed that it had spent $3 billion working on a cure for Alzheimer’s to that point. Merck and Johnson & Johnson took writedowns after late-stage trial failures. Many drug companies have seen their share prices swing wildly as experimental treatments stumbled in study after study.
Overall, there have been about 200 failed attempts to find an Alzheimer’s treatment. Against that backdrop, Biogen and Eisai’s aducanumab had offered a glimmer of hope, and when the studies were halted the bottom fell out.
Investors are likely to demand changes to the company’s board in hopes of a spurring a new business-development strategy, said SVB Leerink analyst Geoffrey Porges in an interview on Bloomberg TV.
“They’re going to have to be a buyer or a seller,” he said. “They can’t sit where they are.”
Biogen spokesman David Caouette declined to comment on Biogen’s business-development strategy moving forward. Eisai spokeswoman Libby Holman said the failure doesn’t affect its plans for the other Alzheimer’s drugs it is developing, called BAN2401 and elenbecestat. Late-stage studies will still proceed this year as planned, Holman said.
Biogen bonds slumped alongside the shares. Biogen’s 5.2 percent note due 2045 was among the biggest decliners in the investment-grade market Thursday, falling 3.481 cents, the most ever for the security, according to Trace data.
Boxed In
Some researchers are still enthusiastic about the amyloid idea despite the growing number of setbacks. The drugs tried so far have failed because they have been hitting the wrong form of the compound, according to Lary Walker, an experimental neuropathologist at Emory University. The drugs have mostly focused on large plaques visible in the autopsied brains of deceased Alzheimer’s patients, he said, but recent data show that the toxic form of amyloid is smaller clusters of proteins that should be targeted instead.
“I think it’s the right target,” said Walker, adding that “every risk factor we know” for Alzheimer’s increases or affects amyloid in some way.
Still, some scientists say that the pursuit of beta amyloid has limited the horizons of drug researchers. Doraiswamy, the Duke professor, said the companies have too much riding on the approach to surrender. Pharmaceutical giants double down on losing bets because their structure doesn’t allow them to just walk away, he said.
“You have a whole division in a company that is betting on a trial, they don’t want to kill it,” Doraiswamy said. Scientists meanwhile are bracing for more trials, and more failures, to come.
“There will be more,” said Perry, the Texas biology professor. “It is not the end.”

Seven Principles of Cancer Treatment
Cancer is at epidemic proportions around the around the world. In the U.S., 1,660 people are expected to die from cancer every day in 2019;1 in China, 4 people die of cancer every minute, or about 5,760 every day.2 Even though China has a larger population, their rate is still higher than the U.S. In this interview, Dr. Antonio Jimenez, author of “Hope4Cancer: Seven Key Principles to Remove Fear and Empower Your Healing Journey,” shares his philosophy on cancer treatment.
Hope4Cancer3 is also the name of his integrative cancer treatment centers, located in Mexico, Colombia and soon, Thailand. A catalyst for Jimenez’s treatment protocol was his father’s diagnosis with Stage 3 prostate cancer in his early 60s. He went on to live for another two decades, and died of heart disease at the age of 82.
"The first clinic opened in 2000 in Tijuana, Mexico, which is south of San Diego California," Jimenez says. "Historically, we know Tijuana has been one of the Meccas of doctors from all over the world coming to treat cancer from a complimentary integrative holistic perspective. So that's our mother clinic, if you may. Then, in 2015, we opened the second Hope4Cancer Clinic in Cancun, Mexico.
The main difference … is that the clinic in Tijuana is an in-patient facility. Patients stay there typically for three plus weeks. The Cancun clinic is for outpatients … Now, in Bangkok, we're partnering with a really powerful thinking group … This will be our fourth clinic, because I also have a clinic in Colombia, South America."
Surprisingly High Success Rate of Alternative Cancer Treatment
Ninety-two percent of Hope4Cancer's patients arrive with Stage 4 cancer or have severely metastasized cancers. Despite that, a third-party review of 365 randomly selected patient charts reveal the center has a 76 percent two-year survival rate, and extrapolated data suggests their five-year survival rate should still be in the 70-percent range.
This is in sharp contrast to National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results (SEER) data, which shows conventional cancer treatment h as a five-year survival rate of just 25 percent.4
"We were quite thrilled about this finding," Jimenez says. "Every day we are blessed that patients are getting better and better. I think people are more informed now. They're willing to make those lifestyle changes. It's empowering them to heal. They're getting it."
Seven Key Principles of Cancer Therapy
Hope4Cancer offers a comprehensive, customized approach to cancer treatment,5 focused around seven key principles:

Patients typically stay at the treatment center for three to six weeks, but that doesn't mean they're cured in that time.
During their stay, they are given a customized program and learn how to implement it. But they still have to keep it up once they get home. In some cases, conventional cancer therapies will also be employed.
"Following these seven key principles is so important in integrating a truly holistic effect program," Jimenez says. "That said, we're medical doctors. I'm a naturopath also. Oftentimes, we have to do some conventional therapies to stop this aggressive tumor burden.
If a patient comes, for example, with a Pancoast tumor — this is a tumor in the upper part of the lung — it blocks the circulation to the brain. If you don't give them spot radiation, five sessions, to decrease that, the patient's not going to live. There are few, but there are some specific indications for radiation.
Pain is another one. I'd rather give five to seven spot radiations to the bone to reduce pain, reduce the likelihood of that bone fracturing or breaking, than having that patient be on narcotics or other tough pain medication …
After over 25 years of working in an integrative field, I want to empower. I want to have this information available, so that if you were just diagnosed with cancer, if you are in Stage 4 and have failed conventional therapies, [you know] there are options for you. There are always options. This is one of the main reasons for my writing this book, 'Hope4Cancer.'
I think one of the problems with the frustration in oncology is that once conventional doctors finish chemo, radiation and surgery, they don't know what else to do … That's it. They don't have more options, so the patient feels frustration, hopelessness, and this is when they come to us."
Restricting Animal Protein May Improve Immune Function in Cancer Patients
Hope4Cancer incorporates almost all of the principles I know to be useful, and some strategies I was not aware of. Jimenez and I both belong to the Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine (ACIM), which is where I first met him. Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., one of the greatest cancer biologists in the world, whom I’ve interviewed twice, is also a member.
Many of Seyfried’s metabolic principles are now being adopted by cancer specialists, including Hope4Cancer. This includes restriction of animal protein in the initial phase of treatment. The rationale for this strategy is that animal protein can put stress on your immune function.
Jimenez stresses a “garden food plan” that focuses on whole, non-GMO foods that are easy to digest. While I do not recommend veganism, if you have aggressive, terminal cancer, it would probably be wise to avoid animal protein for a time and focus on lighter foods that do not trigger inflammatory responses. Avoiding lectins may also be advisable, as they too are known to cause inflammation.
"In my experience, cancer patients' immune systems are of utmost importance. We know the reasons for that. Cancer cells like to evade the immune system. We can have an optimal immune system, but cancer steals cells.
This is one of Seyfried's hallmarks of cancer. Cancer cells have found a way to shield or cloak themselves from being seen by the immune system," Jimenez says.
"A tumor has two types of cells. Non-stem cancer cells make up about 99 percent of all the cells in a malignant tumor, lymph node nodule or mass. The 1 percent are called cancer stem cells. They exist in the primary tumor. In the primary tumor, these are of the epithelial variant. They're epithelial cancer stem cells.
They leave the primary tumor, going to the extracellular matrix and then penetrate into the blood flow. This is how most cancers spread … They transition from epithelial to mesenchymal stem cells. In that way, they can penetrate the blood vessel wall. Once they're in the circulation, that's when we call them circulating tumor cells, because now they're circulating freely in the blood supply.
These circulating tumor cells then form an embolus or a cellular arrest that fixates itself to the inner wall of the blood vessel. Now there's a second transition from mesenchymal to epithelial cancer stem cells, and when they exit the blood vessel, they lead to metastasis — the breast cancer going to the liver, to the lung, to the brain and to the bone.
What's interesting is that 80 percent or so of the research that goes on in cancer is on the primary tumor. But what is the cause of demise of a cancer patient? Seldom, with few exceptions, is it the primary tumor. It's the metastatic activity. We have that inverted. We should be spending more funds and more energy on the metastasis process, not the primary tumor.
That said, in Hope4Cancer, we have a technology called 'photodynamic infrared spectroscopy.' This is using infrared light and … a sensitizer … called indocyanine green … We give it intravenously. It attaches to circulating tumor cells. The whole blood volume is checked in 17 minutes. It will pick up any circulating tumor cells in the blood. Then, using infrared light, we can kill and target those circulating tumor cells."
The Importance of Metabolic Therapies
The basic concept of cancer as a metabolic disease is that cancer cells are distinctly metabolically different from healthy cells. They have dysfunctional mitochondria, which could be due to a variety of reasons but typically oxidative stressors.
Because of that, the mitochondria in cancer cells are unable to burn fuel normally, using oxygen, even though oxygen is present. Instead, they revert back to fermentation to produce energy, which is relatively inefficient but allows the cancer cells to survive and divide.
Metabolic therapies take advantage of this characteristic and essentially starve the cancer cells of their fuel, which is primarily glucose, but also glutamine, an amino acid found in proteins. The way you do that is by significantly lowering your blood glucose, typically through fasting or partial fasting. This also raises your ketone level, which, aside from being an ideal and preferred fuel for most healthy cells, are also anti-inflammatory.
Light Has Many Valuable Uses in Cancer Therapy
Once you've done that, other therapies can be integrated, such as hyperbaric oxygen, ozone and insulin potentiation therapy (IPT), the latter of which drives your blood sugar even lower to further starve those cancer cells. Jimenez also emphasizes the use of light.
"Light is so important," he says. "For example, red light increases macrophages — increases their activation and their ability to engulf cancer cells and viruses …
Red light also increases oxygenation at the tissue level [and] healthy microcirculation. Green light decreases blood viscosity, which is that clumping of cells so that the red blood cells are not able to transfer oxygen to the tissue. Also, we see increased cellular energy, increased mitochondrial function with green light.
We use blue light to increase nitric oxide production [and] enhance telomerase activity … Cancer patients have shortened telomeres. As we age, those telomeres decrease in size. With blue light, it's been shown to elongate these telomeres.
We have different ways of doing photodynamic therapy or photobiomodulation therapy, which is using light in all of its spectrum, from infrared to ultraviolet … We have infrared devices that can be done externally … It's very good for external tumors and tumors that are palpable …
A new innovation is doing light therapy or photodynamic therapy intravenously … There is quite a number of substances, including vitamin C, curcumin and St. John's wort extract that are enhanced and stimulated by light …
When someone is given intravenous curcumin, then we give them blue light. That enhances the effect. It starts to help those cancer cells produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are toxic to cancer cells. At the same time, you're giving them ozone, or you premedicated them, if you will, with hyperbaric oxygen, so you have synergistic effects."
Jimenez also uses light therapy in conjunction with fasting, IPT and low-dose chemotherapy, as many chemotherapeutic agents are photoactive substances as well. "When you're doing the IPT process, in one vein you have two catheters going.
In one, you do the low-dose chemo, and in the other you do the light. So, you're further enhancing the effect of the chemo," Jimenez explains. Before this procedure, patients will fast for a minimum of 12 to 16 hours, depending on the condition of the patient.
Laetrile Therapy
Another therapy used at Hope4Cancer is amygdalin, also known as laetrile B17, a therapy developed by the late Dr. Harold W. Manner when he was at Loyola University. Jimenez explains its use:
"Intravenously, we bypass the gut. We use anywhere from 3 to 9 grams of amygdalin or laetrile B17 in an IV infusion. It's still that workhorse in cancer therapy. I remember when I started working in integrative oncology in 1988. We used laetrile, nutrition and, oftentimes, shark cartilage … And many patients got well.
Now, of course, we know that people are more toxic in all aspects of the word, from the emotional to the physical. Laetrile still has a very important role. However, we use it more as an [adjunct] therapy, not as a primary therapy."
Metabolic Therapy
I am currently in discussions with Jimenez, Travis Christofferson, author of “Tripping Over the Truth: The Return of the Metabolic Theory of Cancer,” and Seyfried to establish an advanced metabolic therapy at the Hope4Cancer clinics. While it would be useful for any stage of cancer, it would clearly work much better if the person has never received chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Sadly, most of the patients at the Hope4Cancer clinic are already Stage 4 and have received these toxic interventions. The hope is to get more recently diagnosed patients who have yet to receive these immune-busting therapies that typically limit their chance for survival.

"Remember, cancer is not a death sentence … No matter how advanced the doctor tells you that you are, there is always hope for cancer. I say that truly and honestly because I've seen it. I've seen patients come in in wheelchairs, a few on stretchers, and are able to walk out and live a healthy long life. Never give up. Together we can do this."

Seven Principles of Cancer Treatment

Cancer is at epidemic proportions around the around the world. In the U.S., 1,660 people are expected to die from cancer every day in 2019;1 in China, 4 people die of cancer every minute, or about 5,760 every day.2 Even though China has a larger population, their rate is still higher than the U.S. In this interview, Dr. Antonio Jimenez, author of “Hope4Cancer: Seven Key Principles to Remove Fear and Empower Your Healing Journey,” shares his philosophy on cancer treatment.
Hope4Cancer3 is also the name of his integrative cancer treatment centers, located in Mexico, Colombia and soon, Thailand. A catalyst for Jimenez’s treatment protocol was his father’s diagnosis with Stage 3 prostate cancer in his early 60s. He went on to live for another two decades, and died of heart disease at the age of 82.
“The first clinic opened in 2000 in Tijuana, Mexico, which is south of San Diego California,” Jimenez says. “Historically, we know Tijuana has been one of the Meccas of doctors from all over the world coming to treat cancer from a complimentary integrative holistic perspective. So that’s our mother clinic, if you may. Then, in 2015, we opened the second Hope4Cancer Clinic in Cancun, Mexico.
The main difference … is that the clinic in Tijuana is an in-patient facility. Patients stay there typically for three plus weeks. The Cancun clinic is for outpatients … Now, in Bangkok, we’re partnering with a really powerful thinking group … This will be our fourth clinic, because I also have a clinic in Colombia, South America.”
Surprisingly High Success Rate of Alternative Cancer Treatment
Ninety-two percent of Hope4Cancer’s patients arrive with Stage 4 cancer or have severely metastasized cancers. Despite that, a third-party review of 365 randomly selected patient charts reveal the center has a 76 percent two-year survival rate, and extrapolated data suggests their five-year survival rate should still be in the 70-percent range.
This is in sharp contrast to National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results (SEER) data, which shows conventional cancer treatment h as a five-year survival rate of just 25 percent.4
“We were quite thrilled about this finding,” Jimenez says. “Every day we are blessed that patients are getting better and better. I think people are more informed now. They’re willing to make those lifestyle changes. It’s empowering them to heal. They’re getting it.”
Seven Key Principles of Cancer Therapy
Hope4Cancer offers a comprehensive, customized approach to cancer treatment,5 focused around seven key principles:

Patients typically stay at the treatment center for three to six weeks, but that doesn’t mean they’re cured in that time.
During their stay, they are given a customized program and learn how to implement it. But they still have to keep it up once they get home. In some cases, conventional cancer therapies will also be employed.
“Following these seven key principles is so important in integrating a truly holistic effect program,” Jimenez says. “That said, we’re medical doctors. I’m a naturopath also. Oftentimes, we have to do some conventional therapies to stop this aggressive tumor burden.
If a patient comes, for example, with a Pancoast tumor — this is a tumor in the upper part of the lung — it blocks the circulation to the brain. If you don’t give them spot radiation, five sessions, to decrease that, the patient’s not going to live. There are few, but there are some specific indications for radiation.
Pain is another one. I’d rather give five to seven spot radiations to the bone to reduce pain, reduce the likelihood of that bone fracturing or breaking, than having that patient be on narcotics or other tough pain medication …
After over 25 years of working in an integrative field, I want to empower. I want to have this information available, so that if you were just diagnosed with cancer, if you are in Stage 4 and have failed conventional therapies, [you know] there are options for you. There are always options. This is one of the main reasons for my writing this book, ‘Hope4Cancer.’
I think one of the problems with the frustration in oncology is that once conventional doctors finish chemo, radiation and surgery, they don’t know what else to do … That’s it. They don’t have more options, so the patient feels frustration, hopelessness, and this is when they come to us.”
Restricting Animal Protein May Improve Immune Function in Cancer Patients
Hope4Cancer incorporates almost all of the principles I know to be useful, and some strategies I was not aware of. Jimenez and I both belong to the Academy of Comprehensive Integrative Medicine (ACIM), which is where I first met him. Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., one of the greatest cancer biologists in the world, whom I’ve interviewed twice, is also a member.
Many of Seyfried’s metabolic principles are now being adopted by cancer specialists, including Hope4Cancer. This includes restriction of animal protein in the initial phase of treatment. The rationale for this strategy is that animal protein can put stress on your immune function.
Jimenez stresses a “garden food plan” that focuses on whole, non-GMO foods that are easy to digest. While I do not recommend veganism, if you have aggressive, terminal cancer, it would probably be wise to avoid animal protein for a time and focus on lighter foods that do not trigger inflammatory responses. Avoiding lectins may also be advisable, as they too are known to cause inflammation.
“In my experience, cancer patients’ immune systems are of utmost importance. We know the reasons for that. Cancer cells like to evade the immune system. We can have an optimal immune system, but cancer steals cells.
This is one of Seyfried’s hallmarks of cancer. Cancer cells have found a way to shield or cloak themselves from being seen by the immune system,” Jimenez says.
“A tumor has two types of cells. Non-stem cancer cells make up about 99 percent of all the cells in a malignant tumor, lymph node nodule or mass. The 1 percent are called cancer stem cells. They exist in the primary tumor. In the primary tumor, these are of the epithelial variant. They’re epithelial cancer stem cells.
They leave the primary tumor, going to the extracellular matrix and then penetrate into the blood flow. This is how most cancers spread … They transition from epithelial to mesenchymal stem cells.
