In the weeks leading up to President Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, most of the editorial boards, party activists, and elected officials calling for him to end his reelection campaign focused on only one issue: age.
But there was another reason President Biden needed to drop out: Gaza.
Long before President Biden's debate meltdown sparked panic in the Democratic establishment, his support for the Israeli government's war in Gaza sparked outrage in the Democratic base, where 56 percent of the party's supporters have described the war as a genocide.
At least half a million Democratic voters protested President Biden's support for the Gaza genocide by voting uncommitted or submitting blank ballots during the presidential primaries earlier this year, including over 100,000 people in Michigan, 88,000 in North Carolina and 46,000 in Minnesota.
Over 1 in 5 Democrats or independents in key swing states said they were less likely to vote for President Biden due to the war, according to a YouGov-AJP-Action poll in May. Over a quarter of those voters said that an immediate and lasting ceasefire, full entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and conditions on military aid for Israel’s war were the minimum policy changes needed to secure or solidify their votes for Biden.
Many Democratic voters were alienated even more by President Biden's failure to call out reports of anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobic violence with the same fervor he uses to call out reports of antisemitic rhetoric, as well as his criticism of the diverse, overwhelmingly peaceful student protests on college campuses.
Frustrated voters included Muslim Americans, Arab Americans, Black Americans, young people and others who helped carry him to victory in 2020. If those voters ended up supporting third party candidates or boycotting the presidential race altogether in November—as some promised to do if Biden remained on the ticket and did not change course—they could have easily tipped the results in Michigan and other key swing states.
Now that President Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has a chance to turn the page, chart a new course, and win back those voters, including American Muslims.
That's what our coalition of American Muslim political organizations is calling on her to do.
Vice President Harris has already neutralized the concerns of voters worried about President Biden's age. Now she must address the concerns of voters who opposed his support for the war on Gaza.
Many American Muslims are open to supporting Vice President Harris if she distances herself from President Biden's Gaza policy, respectfully engages with all of our community leaders, picks a vice presidential nominee who does not have a history of explicit hostility towards our community like Governor Josh Shapiro, and commits to concrete policy proposals that would stop the genocide, end the broader occupation of the Palestinian people, and establish a just peace.
Taking these steps will set her apart from not only President Biden, but also from President Trump.
Most American Muslims do not want Donald Trump to return to office for perhaps obvious reasons. The former president has made it clear that he plans to round up undocumented immigrants as part of the largest mass deportation in American history, reinstate the Muslim Ban, stack the federal civil service with political loyalists, and pursue a foreign policy just as or even more, immoral than President Biden’s foreign policy.
...
Vice President Harris now has the opportunity to contrast herself with Trump on this issue in ways President Biden could not. She has already built up some goodwill in the American Muslim community by using a noticeably more humane tone when discussing Palestinian suffering compared to others in the administration.

This political cartoon by Louis Dalrymple appeared in Judge magazine in 1903. It depicts European immigrants as rats. Nativism and anti-immigration have a long and sordid history in the United States
* * * * *
How foreign immigrants support the US economy
During my meetings with readers across the nation, the issue of immigration is frequently raised as a concern. It was a topic of conversation in my meeting on Saturday with readers in San Antonio. (See photo below.) After I made my usual remarks about why foreign immigration is good for the US, a reader suggested that I include the facts in my newsletter. So, here they are:
According to recent reports by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, foreign immigrants have fueled the better-than-expected performance of the US economy over the last decade. See Forbes, How Immigrants Are Boosting U.S. Economic And Job Growth. As summarized in the Forbes article, In 2023, “foreign-born” workers comprised nearly 19% of the U.S. labor force . . . This is an uptick from 15.3% in 2006. Immigrants have contributed largely to consumer spending growth by about 0.2 percentage point last year, with a similar boost expected this year, along with an increase in gross domestic product—a measure of all the goods and services produced—by 0.1 percentage point per year since 2022 . . . . Federal Reserve Bank chair Jerome Powell [said], [I] t's just reporting the facts to say that immigration and labor force participation both contributed to the very strong economic output growth that we had last year.” Immigration is fueling business and job creation in the U.S. According to MIT research, immigrants are 80% more likely to start a business than native-born U.S. citizens. They are also responsible for 42% more job creation than native-born founders. So, larger-than-expected foreign immigration has increased consumer spending, GDP, start-up ventures, and job creation. That’s all good.
And there is a downside to restricting foreign immigration:
The U.S. needs more workers to keep the economy humming. In the absence of foreign-born labor, the U.S. talent pool will continue to decline because of lower birth rates with an accompanying aging workforce of Baby Boomers looking to retire.
Indeed, according to a US Census Bureau report, the US population would decrease (to 319 million) instead of growing (to 404 million) by 2060 if the US cut-off immigration. Under a “zero immigration” policy, the percentage of the population over 65 would increase from 15% in 2024 to 26% in 2060—not a good trend. In its starkest terms, immigration is necessary to guarantee a robust, growing labor force to drive the largest economy in the world.
But there’s more. Over the last decade, foreign immigration has saved nine US states from an absolute decline in population. The NYTimes reported on the findings of the 2020 Census in an article entitled, Why Your State Is Growing or Stalling or Shrinking.
Even with foreign immigration, four states lost population overall, including West Virginia and Illinois. Moreover, foreign immigration saved nine additional states from a shrinking population base—including Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
The debate about population growth is complicated. But in the short term, unplanned depopulation is devastating to economies and communities. To see the effects of a shrinking population and dwindling labor force, we need only look at many communities across America where young families are moving out, retirees are aging in place, and restrictive immigration policies discourage foreign immigrants from entering the workforce.
Conversely, states on the “front line” of foreign immigration into the US have booming economies—including California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida.
This interactive map will allow you to compare the economic impact of immigration on the respective states. As a point of comparison, California is the fifth largest economy in the world. 26% of its population consists of foreign immigrants, who contribute $137 billion in annual taxes, control $351 billion in spending power, and include 780,000 entrepreneurs. West Virginia’s population is 1.6% foreign immigrants who contribute $324 million in taxes and control $880 million in spending power. There are no recorded immigrant entrepreneurs in West Virginia.
Check out your own state on the interactive map.
Is our immigration system broken? Absolutely! But let’s not conflate the broken immigration system with the fact that America is strong (in part) because of immigration and will remain strong (in part) because of immigration. Foreign immigrants make America a better, more productive, and more innovative nation. Let’s not lose sight of that truth in the debate over how we allow foreign immigrants to enter the US.

Don Diligent’s Notes on Moon’s Theocracy, Plus Fascism and Terrorism
Tumblr media
▲ John K. Singlaub
An archived WIOTM post from “Don Diligent” on July 21, 2016, “Mr. Moon! You did mean autocratic theocracy! Plus fascism & terrorism! Just ask Gary Jarmin & Neil Salonen!” Significance Of The Training Session Reverend Sun Myung Moon May 17, 1973
My dream is to organize a Christian political party including the Protestant denominations, Catholics and all the religious sects. Then, the communist power will be helpless before ours…when it comes to our age, we must have an automatic theocracy[*] to rule the world. So, we cannot separate the political field from the religious…We have to purge the corrupted politicians, and the sons of God must rule the world. The separation between religion and politics is what Satan likes most.
United States Council for World Freedom - Militarist Monitor
The U.S. Council for World Freedom (USCWF) is the United States affiliate of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL). The first WACL branch in the U.S., the American Council for World Freedom (ACWF), was founded in 1970 by Lee Edwards. Edwards had worked with the Young Americans for Freedom.
In 1980, retired Major General John K. Singlaub went to Taiwan to speak at the WACL annual convention. A year later he was asked to start a new U.S. chapter…Joining Singlaub from the ACWF board were John Fisher, Stefan Possony, Lev Dobriansky, J. A. (Jay) Parker, and Fred Schlafly.
Report from Neil Salonen about FLF November 1969 Page 27
Because Vietnam is now America’s most crucial national issue, we felt that FLF must take a clear and decisive stand, to be responsible to our created mission. Our campus program has been geared toward uniting the efforts of as many students as possible, to create a coordinated response to the radical activities of the violent revolutionists. In a meeting of all those student groups who were interested in supporting our policy of PEACE WITH FREEDOM, a broad coalition was formed with the Student Coordinating Committee for Peace with Freedom in Vietnam; the Washington, D. C., Young Republicans; and the Young Americans for Freedom. The coalition adopted the name STUDENT FAST FOR FREEDOM and formed a steering committee for all planning. Over 40 students in Washington alone joined in the three days of fasting to demonstrate their willingness to sacrifice for the freedom of all people. For all those Family members who participated, the Fast had an even deeper, more symbolic meaning.
The opening rally was held in Copley Lounge at Georgetown University on Thursday, October 10, at 8:00 p.m. The Fast Coordinators, Neil Salonen (FLF) and Charlie Stephens (SCC), opened the press conference with a statement of the goals of the Fast, a briefing to all the participants of the mechanics of the three days, and an appeal to all of America to join in supporting this demonstration of commitment to the revitalization of the American nation. The assembled group was then addressed by Mr. Neil Staebler, Democratic National Committeeman from Michigan, considered one of the senior statesmen of the Democratic Party; Dr. Walter Judd, former Congressman from Minnesota, with 30 years service as a medical missionary in China; His Excellency, Bui Diem, Ambassador to the United States from Vietnam; and Mr. Bernard Yoh, a veteran of a lifetime of guerrilla warfare against communist aggression in Southeast Asia.

Receiving the guests prior to the dinner were FLF President and Mrs. Neil Salonen, Congressman and Mrs. Richard Ichord, and FLF Secretary-General Gary Jarmin.
Mr. Salonen completed the program by giving surprise birthday gifts to four people who have been with FLF since its beginning. Honored were Accuracy in Media head Reed Irvine, Congressional assistant David Martin, Committee for Free China representative Lee Edwards, and Bernard Yoh.
Conservative Foreign Policy - CSPAN
Gary Jarmin moderated a discussion, “What Is a Conservative Foreign Policy?” The speakers discussed topics such as protecting U.S. interests, maintaining peace through strength, and the legacy of President Ronald Reagan.
MY COMMENTS:Gary Jarmin introduces David Keene (35:45 - 50:25) and after his talk Jarmin mentions (50:33 - 50:41) that he was the Legislative Director of the American Conservative Union from 1975 - 1979. It is quite apparent then, that when Gary Jarmin “broke his Blessing” in early 1975 and left the UC, he landed on his feet not only with a “new job” but was given a high level position working under David Keene who had strong ties to the World Anti Communist League. By the way, Gary Jarmin also founded the American Service Council.

Good morning, folks. We'd like to offer a Belated Happy 137th Birthday to Brigadier General Philip Stearns Gage, who was born on Friday, November 13th 1885 in Michigan. Attending West Point, he graduates with the Class of 1909; his roommate is none other than George S. Patton, Jr. A lover of the water, Gage goes into the Coast Artillery. Routine state-side service is interrupted by WW1, where he serves overseas. Returning home afterwards, he continues his career path at a variety of posts, including the Command and General Staff School, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. As World War 2 approaches, he is at Fort Hancock. Beginning in November of 1940, Gage wears multiple hats simultaneously, as both commander of the Coast Defenses Of Sandy Hook and the 7th Coast Artillery Regiment (Mines). His Brigadier General's Star comes on April 6th 1941, with the role of Commanding Officer Coast Defenses of Eastern New York (Long Island Sound), Commanding General Harbor Defenses of New York, AND Commanding General New York Sub-Sector. By 1943, the Harbor Defenses of New York will swell to a division-sized command, with over 10,000 men assigned. Dozens of coast artillery gun emplacements, multiple batteries of anti-aircraft guns, underwater mines, submarine detectors, hundreds of miles of telephone lines, anti-submarine nets, sona buoys, a flotilla of ships, searchlights, radar... and hundreds of square miles of coastline inhabited by shaky and terrified civilians are all his responsibility. Sitting bullseye in the middle... is New York Harbor and the City. So great is the responsibility, General Gage was quoted "I am the defender of 20 Million People And The Industrial Heartland Of The Nation." All this, of course, occurs as the Battle Of The Atlantic rages just off our shores. It was one hell of a responsibility, and he executed his mission flawlessly. He would retire after decades of honorable service, retiring to Georgia, where, not surprisingly, he finds a successful career in the insurance industry. General Gage passed away in Atlanta at the ripe old age of 97 on January 13th, 1982. Today we remember General Gage and his phenomenal service to our nation. 2020 vision care
Tumblr media
#2020 vision care plus#
You pay a fixed dollar amount as well as a copay for the exam, glasses and lenses. These plans act more like traditional insurance coverage. Check the memberships you're already a part of: AARP Vision Discounts provided by EyeMed, AAA and retailers like Costco may offer cost savings. “This is a great option if you are just looking to have some help on the cost of routine vision,” Kunkle Roberts says. Pay a monthly fee for access to discounted comprehensive eye exams and eyewear in a specified network of doctors and vision centers. If you don't have access to employer-based vision insurance, you can buy a plan from a private insurer. AARP Services chief medical officer Charlotte Yeh, M.D., recommends a yearly comprehensive, dilated-eye exam for every person over age 50. “We conducted a study on adults ages 65-plus, and we found that 92 percent used eyeglasses for either distance or near-vision correction,” says Josh Ehrlich, the Michigan professor who coauthored the study, published in 2018 in the medical journal JAMA Ophthalmology. Many people get a deal on vision insurance through their employers: You pay a couple of dollars per month as an add-on to your current health benefits and your employer pays the rest, explains Danielle Kunkle Roberts, cofounder of the insurance agency Boomer Benefits.Įven if you're one of those lucky people whose sight is still sharp, it makes sense to take advantage of an employer-based vision plan, because there's a good chance you will need vision correction in the near future. Upgrades such as anti-glare coating on glasses and transition lenses aren't necessarily going to be covered, so read the fine print to see if any part of the cost will be picked up.
#2020 vision care plus#
This pays for services like routine eyesight exams plus a large percentage of your costs for glasses and contacts. But the best way to be diagnosed is to have an exam. That creates a bit of a hitch, since eye exams aren't covered unless you are diagnosed with a disease. (Check with your doctor about individual office policies.) While a simple refractive exam (to figure out your glasses prescription) is not typically covered, if your ophthalmologist diagnoses you with a medical problem like glaucoma or cataracts, the entire visit may be billed under medical insurance, says Josh Ehr-lich, M.D., an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. What medical insurance doesn't cover is the cost of eyeglasses, contacts or other costs related to everyday eyesight support. Your regular health insurance will cover the cost of diagnosis and treatment for any eye injury or disease that requires a doctor's help - no different from a broken bone or a heart condition - though with the usual copays and deductibles. One takes care of your day-to-day vision - it's mostly about glasses and contact lenses. Think about vision care as providing two services. But options do exist, even for those on the tightest of budgets. “Expense is one of the key reasons why people do not get their eyes checked,” says Julian Roberts, executive director of the National Association of Vision Care Plans. Good vision insurance, though, isn't a given. For adults over 50, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss. Nearly 2 percent of people 40 and older have glaucoma. “I finally have peace of mind,” he says.Īn annual dilated-eye exam is important - it tests your ability to see, screens for age-related eye problems and even helps to detect chronic diseases, like diabetes. Hastert got an appointment, and his eyes were healthy. Then he heard that EyeCare America offers comprehensive exams by volunteer ophthalmologists at no cost through its Seniors Program. The 71-year-old retiree from Tupelo, Mississippi, didn't have vision insurance, and with money tight, he avoided going to the eye doctor. Yet Hastert hadn't had an eye exam in over 30 years. “My grandma went blind from diabetes complications,” he says. En español | Pete Hastert has diabetes and good reason to worry about his eyesight.

Ladies in Michigan - vote this guy out
CNN —
A Michigan candidate for the US House backed by former President Donald Trump once railed against giving women the right to vote, arguing that America has “suffered” since women’s suffrage.
John Gibbs, who defeated in the primary an incumbent Republican who had voted to impeach Trump, also made comments in the early 2000s praising an organization trying to repeal the 19th Amendment which also argued that women’s suffrage had made the United States into a “totalitarian state.”
As a student at Stanford University in the early 2000s, Gibbs founded a self-described “think tank” called the Society for the Critique of Feminism that argued women did not “posess (sic) the characteristics necessary to govern,” and said men were smarter than women because they are more likely to “think logically about broad and abstract ideas in order to deduce a suitable conclusion, without relying upon emotional reasoning.”
Hosted on Gibbs’ personal page at Stanford in 2000 and 2001, the Society for the Critique of Feminism argued for a patriarchal society run by men, calling it “the best model for the continued success of a society.”
Anne Marie Schieber, a spokesperson for Gibbs’ campaign told CNN that Gibbs believed women should be allowed to vote and work.
“John made the site to provoke the left on campus and to draw attention to the hypocrisy of some modern-day feminists. It was nothing more than a college kid being over the top,” she said in an email. “Of course, John does not believe that women shouldn’t vote or shouldn’t work, and his mother worked for thirty-three years for the Michigan Department of Transportation!”
Gibbs requested the website for the think tank be removed from the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine in 2016, according to a spokesman for the Internet Archive. But CNN’s KFile reviewed it on a different archiving service.
On the site, Gibbs actively argued against women being granted the right to vote, saying it led to an enlarged federal government.
“Some argue that in a democratic society, it is hypocritical or unjust for women, who are 50% of the population, not to have the vote,” Gibbs’ website read. “This is obviously not true, since the founding fathers, who understood liberty and democracy better than anyone, did not believe so. In addition, all people under age 18 cannot vote, although they too comprise a significant portion of the population. So we cannot say that women should be able to vote simply because they are a large part of the population.”
“We conclude that increasing the size and scope of government is unequivocally bad,” Gibbs added. “And since women’s suffrage has caused this to occur on a larger scale than any other cause in history, we conclude that the United States has suffered as a result of women’s suffrage.”
The Society for the Critique of Feminism was cited by other anti-feminist websites, including on anti-feminist and conspiracy website Father’s Manifesto. Father’s Manifesto, which was operated by the Christian Party, had a petition to repeal the 19th Amendment. Gibbs twice praised the organization in comments hosted on their website and linked to them from his own website.
“A great website detailing, among other things, the unconstitutional laws which passed as a result of the 19th amendment, and providing further evidence of the damages done by the 19th amendment: The 19th Amendment and the Totalitarian State,” Gibbs said, linking to their website.
Speaking earlier this month with the Stanford Review, the university’s conservative student newspaper, Gibbs said his time at Stanford was formative for his beliefs.
“When I got to Stanford, I got to know some conservatives there through the Stanford Review,” Gibbs said. “Having actual conservative friends in the flesh — which I didn’t have in high school, I just kind of had the reading — made a big difference. Being able to have people I could be friends with who could sharpen me and my conservatism. So yeah, that was it — discovering Thomas Sowell in high school and continuing to build on the ideas at Stanford through the friends that I had.”
Past controversial comments
Gibbs beat Rep. Peter Meijer to win the GOP nomination for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, primarying the incumbent congressman who voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump over his action surrounding the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol. Gibbs now facesDemocrat Hillary Scholten in the general election.
Gibbs is a former Trump administration official who served in the Department of Housing and Urban Development and was later nominated to be director of the Office of Personnel Management.
CNN’s KFile previously reported that Gibbs’ history of conspiratorial and inflammatory tweets included baselessly accusing Democrats of taking part in satanic rituals and defending a notorious anti-Semitic troll banned by Twitter. His nomination to be OPM director was never voted out of committee and was eventually returned to the President with the start of the new Congress in 2021.
Argued against women in the workplace
One section of Gibbs’ website said having more women in workplaces “strains” men by keeping them from making offensive jokes and leading to “frivilous” (sic) sexual harassment lawsuits.
“In the post-feminist workplace, men must bend over backwards to make sure that they do not inadvertently offend any woman who might happen to hear a joke or comment uttered in humor and harmlessness,” the website read. “Numerous sexual harassment laws are introduced, which spawn a barrage of sexual harassment cases of frivolous proportions, wasting the time and energy of the courts and legal system, and taxpayer dollars.”
Gibbs’ website also said having more women in the workplace affected chemistry and led to less qualified employees.
“Businesses must make a concerted effort to hire and promote women who may or may not be up to par with their male counterparts,” he said. “In addition, the chemistry of having women in a masculine environment may reduce business cohesiveness and productivity from what it might have been otherwise (this is especially true of the military, although by no means limited to it). Needless to say all these things subtract from a team’s effort to produce efficiently.”
“Therefore, since the increased presence of women in the workplace does not benefit men, women, or business operations, there is no factual basis on which to claim that it is better to have more women in the workplace,” he concluded.

A majority of the United States’ young adult population has been forced to place its life on hold as the pandemic has erased the opportunity to move out of their parents’ homes or otherwise gain independence. This is the reality that has been exposed by a recent Pew Research Center report showing 52 percent of people between the ages of 18-29 are living at home with their parents.
According to the study, this is the highest share of young people living at home since the end of the Great Depression in 1940. As shocking as it is, this number belies the actual social crisis that is hidden beneath it.
The psychological impact of the chasm that has opened up between expectations for the future and the objective conditions facing millions of people is reflected by a national survey conducted by researchers from four universities and published this month by the COVID-19 Consortium for Understanding. The survey on mental health conditions for people in Generation Z, or young adults between 18 and 24, is a damning depiction of the mental and psychological destruction being wreaked on this generation.
According to the research, about 47.3 percent of young people experienced some sort of depressive symptoms during the last few months. The most common causes for depression seen in this age group are closure of schools (51 percent), working from home (41 percent), and suffering a pay cut. This compares to only 3.4 percent of people in this age group in 2013-2014 reporting suicidal thoughts, anxiety or sleep disruption.
“I’ve never been in a situation in my life when I was financially comfortable,” said Dasilva, whom has been forced to live with relatives along with her husband since spring. In a conversation with the World Socialist Web Site, she explained that her family in Michigan, where she lives, has caught COVID-19. This includes her aunt, uncle and cousin.
Prior to the pandemic, Dasilva and her husband were part of the performance industry. However, as live music venues, theatre and other creative arts have been upended, she admits that she has “no idea where I see myself in five years.”
In addition to her financial situation, Michigan has once again become hard-hit by the coronavirus. The state ranks ranked eighth in the country with almost 390,000 COVID-19 cases and over 9,500 deaths since March.
Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer re-imposed a 3-4 week shutdown of restaurants and bars across the state last month without any new financial aid for those affected. While being largely ineffective to stem new outbreaks—since the auto factories and other large workplaces remain open without any significant restrictions—the shutdowns will continue to devastate the retail and service industry, which largely employs young people.
David, a 21-year old student and grocery worker in Virginia, told the WSWS that the “state of the economy scares me.” During the first weeks of the pandemic, millions were laid off on a weekly basis, leading to tens of millions of people unemployed or underemployed. Even as millions are cut off from the last remnants of unemployment benefits which expire at the end of this month, hundreds of thousands continue to apply for assistance from their states on a weekly basis.
“Being stuck with parents, it used to be something that people would get made fun of for,” David said sarcastically. “Now we can see that this is a real concern for society.” Speaking about his own personal circumstances, David explained “I live with my parents but my mother was furloughed for three months” during spring. “She didn’t get paid anything during this time, she is labeled an ‘independent contractor,’” a term businesses often affix to workers in order to avoid paying them unemployment or healthcare benefits.
“I had to pay the bills. While the bill collectors lowered the cost of the mortgage and things like that, I was the only one working” in the entire house, he said. On top of this, David’s grandmother, a food stamp recipient, passed away during summer. Not only did this further traumatize family members, “but she was the only other person in the house getting any sort of financial support,” he said.
“I’m an essential worker,” he said in conclusion. “I was going to quit my job to pursue a career [in visual arts], but that field isn’t hiring right now. I don’t know when things will be normal again. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see my friends. This is a struggle.”
As misery among the working population grows millions are turning toward politics of a decidedly left-wing and anti-capitalist variety. According to a survey conducted by YouGov this year, the support for socialism among young people has increased significantly. Among the Gen Z group, support grew from 40 percent in 2019 to 49 percent this year. The report also indicated that 60 percent of Millennials are looking for an alternative to capitalism.
Mark, another young worker that was laid off in September, said that his plans to move out of his parents’ house “pretty much vanished” when COVID-19 emerged. “There aren’t any jobs beyond entry level, with horrible $10-12 per-hour pay.”
Speaking about the living situation for his friends, he said “those that can afford it are living together as roommates.” Even this poses difficulties, due to the fact that “landlords are increasing rent.” Mark explained that he had heard stories about states setting up courthouses simply to deal with the growth in evictions as moratoriums on owed rent expire.
“The unemployment benefits [made available by the CARES Act] were super helpful,” he said. “But when the expanded $600 weekly pay ended in July, jobs didn’t come back.” Mark said he had a job lined up with the local county government but the pandemic forced the office to furlough workers.
“The coronavirus proves that under the current system, capitalism can’t deal with the issue of joblessness,” he concluded. “It makes you wonder what things will be like when there are no expanded benefits for people.”

HELLO!! THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN GRADUATE EMPLOYEES’ ORGANIZATION IS ON WEEK TWO OF ITS STRIKE FOR A SAFE AND JUST CAMPUS!!
As we are entering week TWO of our strike, I thought that it might be time to switch things up since my brain apparently can’t engage meaningfully with Twitter anymore??? (idk y’all it’s been a long week)
If you’re wondering what the graduate students (myself included) are striking for, here is a quick overview of our demands:
COVID-19 DEMANDS
- For the whole community, sufficient, transparent, robust plans for testing, contact tracing, and campus safety.
- For graduate employees, a universal right to work remotely without documentation, resources for remote work, better representation in the decision-making processes of the university surrounding health measures, and access to the health models motivating current policy.
- For parents and caregivers, care subsidy regardless of a care provider’s license status and location and the age of those who need care; allow for healthcare plans to be maintained and available even during leaves of absence taken by anyone, at no extra cost
- For international students, better International Center support and the repeal of the $500 international student fee and document shipping fee.

EPILOGUE Darkened room.  Dim light.
Shadows move around.
George Moros- billionaire financier of the Progressive Alliance.
The Coke Brothers- billionaire financiers of the American Patriots.
A door opens.  Then closes.
Charles Coke: Sarah.
The woman is Sarah Lenti, executive director of the Lincoln Project- a group of American Patriots and former American Patriots dedicated to preventing Donald Trump from winning a second term as PCW CEO.
Sarah Lenti: What the hell is going on!  I thought you had things under control.
David Coke: Sarah, I know things haven’t exactly gone to plan-
Sarah Lenti: Not gone to plan?  Dawn McGill is still in control of PCW with all her ‘PCW is for the people’ bull-*BLEEP*.
George Moros tries to reassure her.
George Moros: Look.  We stopped the show for the evening.  That gives us time to figure this out.
Sarah Lenti: Dawn McGill is going to hand the reins of PCW to Donald Trump for another four years!
George Moros: No she won’t.  Clearly, it’s time to take this to the next level.
Moros pulls out a cell phone and hits a button.
George Moros: It’s time.  Operation Dominion is in effect.

Suave welcomes everyone back for part two of PCW’s Extreme Election Night 2020.
Colleen Crowder: “BLUE WAVE BABY!”
Johnny Suave: “Well, not quite.”
Suave introduces the Alabama Senate Medallion Match that was going to be shown via highlights on Extreme Election Night 2020 Part One.
VIDEO-Alabama Senate Medallion Match: Doug Jones (Progressive Alliance) vs. Tommy Tuberville (American Patriots) –Tuberville finishes off Jones.  Cover.  One – two – three!
WINNER: Tommy Tuberville (American Patriots)
Johnny Suave: “Tommy Tuberville rolls past Doug Jones and that’s another win for the American Patriots.”
Colleen Crowder: Again, we the media have not called that match so there’s no winner.
Suave notes that with the win, the American Patriots hold a two match to one advantage over the Progressive Alliance and that it all comes down to the Gary Peters-John James match later on tonight.
Crowder objects again.  “It’s one to nothing Progressive Alliance as both the earlier South Carolina match and the Alabama match have NOT been called by us,” Crowder maintains.
Suave rolls his eyes and runs through the lineup for tonight’s show.

For the second time at Extreme Election Night 2020, PCW Owner Dawn McGill makes her way out- this time she goes to the ring.
Dawn McGill “The 6 Foot Demolition Machine in a Short Skirt” HT: 6’ 0″ WT: 130 / HOME: Dallas, TX FIN: McGill Bomb
Colleen Crowder: “What is SHE doing out here?”
Johnny Suave: “Um.  She’s the owner of PCW.  She’s got news to deliver?”
Colleen Crowder: “That’s OUR job!  We determine what’s newsworthy for the people.”
Johnny Suave: “And that’s why Donald Trump uses Twitter to go around people like you.”
Colleen Crowder: “HEY!”
McGill climbs in.  Suave sends to the ring for remarks from the owner of PCW.
TALKING BOUT HEROES The first thing Dawn McGill does is profusely thanks everyone who came to the show tonight.
Dawn McGill: “I keep saying this but you have to understand that I truly mean this.  PCW isn’t about the big shots.  PCW is all about YOU – the people.  We do this for you.”
She then asks if there’s any first responders on hand tonight.
A few stand up.
Dawn McGill: “Let’s show them our appreciation.”
The crowd responds in kind and gives the first responders on hand an ovation.
Dawn then asks if there’s anyone here who recovered from having COVID.  Again, a few people stand up and again the crowd gives out an ovation.
Colleen Crowder: “She’s just sucking up to the rabble.”
Johnny Suave: “Or she really means what she says and doesn’t have a narrative in mind.”
Crowder’s offended but McGill continues.  She next asks if there’s anyone here tonight who runs a small business to please stand up.
Several do and they are greeted with an ovation from the PCW fans.
Dawn McGill: “Okay.  Finally, everyone please stand up.”
They do.
Dawn McGill: “These have been unprecedented times.  Yet, you’ve persevered.   You’ve kept going.  You’ve weathered or continue to weather the storm.  You’re here.  You are all heroes.  Give yourself a hand.”
They do.
Dawn McGill: Thank you so much for coming out here tonight.  You get it.  But they don’t get it.  Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer.  They just don’t get it.  Conservative Inc.- people if given the chance would sell our souls for the corporate dollar.  They just don’t get it.  So let me make this clear to everyone inside the Washington Beltway.  PCW is-NOT-here-for-you.
RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Dawn McGill: PCW is not here for the American Patriots. PCW is not here for the Progressive Alliance.  PCW is not here for the big money special interest groups.  PCW is here for YOU…
RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Dawn McGill: …the fans.  People like me and people like you who pay their bills on time – don’t spend money they don’t have – who don’t run up debt with no intention of paying the money back.  You know, the stuff the people inside the Washington D.C. beltway are unwilling or completely incompetent at doing.
RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Johnny Suave: HOLY CRAP!
Colleen is momentarily startled by Suave’s outburst.
Johnny Suave: Dawn McGill just virtue signaled!
Crowder grumbled something under her breath but doesn’t actually respond- or maybe no one can’t hear her as the noise level is deafening
The video screen comes to life.
Johnny Suave: “What the hell is going on?”
The video screen zeroes in on a scuffle backstage.
Who’s Involved? Berkeley, California Professor McCarthy’s Progressive Flock -The Green World Order: GreenPete, PeaceNick, ‘Extreme Vegan’ Brock Cole Lee, Peta from PETA -The Young Jerks: Zenk Cryger, James Idahola, and Anna the foul-mouthed sidekick -Code Pink and Emily S. List -The League of Anti-Fascists: Ted and Chaz
American Heartland Coalition -Charlie Blackwell -‘PCW’s Extreme Pizza Delivery Girl’ Tessa Martin
Johnny Suave: “Professor McCarthy’s Flock are beating down Charlie Blackwell and Tessa Martin.  Both are scheduled to wrestle later on in the evening!”
Colleen Crowder: “It looks like a peaceful protest to me, Johnny.”
Blackwell gets flung into the wall by GreenPete and Brock Cole Lee.
Code Pink glitter bombs Tessa – she’s blinded.  Emily S. List then DDT’s her to the floor.
“Yeah.  Totally peaceful,” Suave says in a tone totally dripping with sarcasm.
Dawn immediately rolls out of the ring and takes off for the back.
Johnny Suave: “While Dawn checks out the situation, let’s show some of the House War Games Match between the Progressive Alliance and the American Patriots.”
Suave explains that two years ago, the Progressive Alliance ended the American Patriots run of victories that dated back to 2010.
Colleen Crowder: Two years ago, the Progressive Alliance won a decisive victory.  Tonight, our polling states they will win and win easily.
————————————————-
MATCH #6/HOUSE WAR GAMES MATCH: Progressive Alliance vs. American Patriots
American Patriots: Lauren Boebert (CO)) Burgess Owens (UT) Jim Jordan (OH) Kimberly Klacik (MD) Lee Haywood (NC)
vs.
Progressive Alliance: Adam Schiff (CA) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) Deborah K. Ross (NC) Kathy Manning (NC) Ben McAdams (UT)
————————————————-
Johnny Suave: “The time limit is twenty minutes.  Whomever has the most wrestlers left at the end of twenty minutes wins the match.”
Adam Schiff and Kimberly Klacik immediately lock up in the middle of the ring to start the match.
Johnny Suave: “Maryland’s Kimberly Klacik came out with a campaign video that went viral.”
youtube
Johnny Suave: “She’s gained a lot of attention and she’s trying to be successful in a district that overwhelming supports the Progressive Alliance.  How far can she go tonight in this match?”
Schiff pushes Klacik to the corner. Side head lock by Klacik, but Schiff breaks free and hits a drop kick.  Then he near decapitates Klacik with a clothesline.  Schiff covers.  One.  Two.  Three.
Kimberly Klacik (American Patriots) eliminated.
Johnny Suave: “Apparently not that long.”
Colleen Crowder: “BLUE WAVE!  IT’S A BLUE WAVE!”
Jim Jordan lands a punch to Schiff’s jaw but misses a kick. Ross misses a Pelé kick.  Jordan rolls her up for a two count.  Jordan hits a back drop to Ross and Lee Haywood whips her to the corner.  Lauren Boebert levels Ross with a stiff punch.  Burgess Owens tags Ben McAdams with a right hand.   McAdams counters an Owens’s suplex into a sleeper – Owens flips him forward to break the hold and goes to work with a volley of kicks.  Boebert goes after Manning’s ankle.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez charges around the ring and levels Boebert. Ocasio-Cortez rolls Boebert into the ring and goes to work on her.  Jamaal Bowman tags Owens with a right hand. Bowman and Owens circle each other and then lock up in the middle of the ring. Bowman locks in a standing side head lock and goes for shoulder tackle, but Owens barely budges. Bowman misses a splash in the corner. Bowman lifts Owens onto his shoulder, but Owens escapes and lands on his feet. McAdams comes in and finally takes Owens off his feet.  Head butt by McAdams and he works over Owens in the corner.  McAdams runs the ropes and takes down Owens with a drop kick.  McAdams for the pinfall – Owens kicks out.  McAdams runs the ropes again – Owens catches McAdams on the return with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker.  Owens hooks the leg.  One.  Two.  Three.
Ben McAdams (Progressive Alliance) eliminated.
Colleen Crowder: WHAT?
Johnny Suave: “BURGESS OWENS DEFEATS BEN McADAMS AND THE AMERICAN PATRIOTS TIE THIS MATCH UP!”
Crowder pulls herself together.
Colleen Crowder: “Still plenty of time for the Progressive Alliance to win.  We’ve already projected it.”
Manning levels Haywood and heads up top.  Haywood catches her and slams Manning to the mat.  Cover.  One.  Two –
Johnny Suave: “MANNING KICKS OUT!”
Crowder almost appears relieved.
With time running short, Jim Jordan goes to work with super kicks on Adam Schiff and the two men battle back and forth. Lauren Boebert blocks a running power slam from Ocasio-Cortez and posts her in the corner. They get into a heated back and forth battle.  Deborah K. Ross hits a forearm shot over the top rope on Lee Haywood.  Kathy Manning follows with a kick to Haywood.  Schiff throws Jordan over the top rope and then engages with Burgess Owens.  Manning and Ross drag Haywood to ring center- DOUBLE DDT!  Manning covers.  One.  Two.  THREE!
Lee Haywood (American Patriots) eliminated.
Neither team could score a pinfall the rest of the match.  When the bell sounds the Progressive Alliance hold a slim 4-3 advantage and pick up the win.
WINNER: Team Progressive Alliance @ 20:00
Colleen Crowder: “YES!  Just like we called it!”
Johnny Suave: “For the second consecutive Extreme Election Night, the Progressive Alliance win the House War Games Match.  This one was very close though.”
Crowder calls it further proof a ‘blue wave’ is taking over PCW.  Suave ignores her.
BACKSTAGE PCW cameras find Charlie Blackwell and ‘PCW Extreme Pizza Delivery Girl’ Tessa Martin laid out on the floor backstage being attended to by Nurse Nellie and the PCW Clean-Up Crew.  Also on hand, ‘Red Solo Cup’ Ray McAvay and the Deplorables.
No sign of Professor McCarthy’s Flock.
More worrying, no sign of PCW Owner Dawn McGill.  One of the Deplorables finds a heel shoe McGill was wearing on the floor and brings it to McAvay.
McAvay asks if anyone’s seen McGill?  The PCW Clean-Up Crew tell him the only people they found were Blackwell and Martin.
McAvay immediately sends the Deplorables out to look for Dawn McGill.
**********************************
MATCH #7/MICHIGAN SENATE MEDALLION MATCH:
Gary Peters (Progressive Alliance) vs. John James (American Patriots)
**********************************
Peters goes right after James. Rights to James. James pushes him down. Peters pops back up. A dropkick to James. James sends Peters out of the ring.
Johnny Suave: “That was a tough fall. Peters is a little shaken up.”
Colleen Crowder: “He’s just giving James false hope.  This one’s in the bag.”
Peters back in.  James hits an Enziguri and beats down Peters a bit. Hangman’s DDT.  Cover.  One.  Two- Peters kicks out.  James runs the ropes from side to side and dropkick’s Peters’s leg! Peters hobbles into a single leg takedown! Cover.  One – TWO!  Again Peters kicks out.  James keeps the pressure on. He goes after the leg with a standing kneebar. Peters endures.  James takes him down again and covers.  One – Two – NO!
Johnny Suave: “Gary Peters stays alive in this match.”
Colleen Crowder: “He’s got John James right where he wants him, Johnny.”
Peters throws a haymaker and rocks James! James returns the favor and throws haymakers right back.  James kicks the bad leg – Peters falls to the mat.  James with a sunset flip – cover.  One – TWO!  Peters survives again.  James stands and takes Peters’s bad leg.  Spin.
Johnny Suave: “FIGURE FOUR LEG LOCK!”
James has it in tight and Peters’s is in a lot of trouble.
Johnny Suave: “THIS COULD BE IT!”
Colleen Crowder: “Nope.  It’s all under control.”
James releases the hold and hooks the leg.
Colleen Crowder: “We’re projecting that Gary Peters is going to WIN this match!”
One.  Two.  TH-
But before James can get to three, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson run down and pull the referee out of the ring.
Johnny Suave: “HOLD IT!”
Whitmer sprays mace into the referee’s eyes.  He falls to the floor and is out of commission.
James goes over to the ropes to find out what’s going on.  Bad idea.
Johnny Suave: “HOLY CRAP!  SHE JUST MACED JOHN JAMES!”
James stumbles back and falls over Peters.  Peters immediately rolls him up.
A new referee slides into the ring.
ONETWOTHREE!
Johnny Suave: “QUICK COUNT!”
The referee calls for the bell and then takes off towards the back.
Colleen Crowder: “BLUE WAVE!  BLUE WAVE!”
WINNER: Gary Peters (Progressive Alliance) @ 8:10
Suave can’t believe it.
Johnny Suave: “John James had this match won but Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson pulled the referee out of the ring.  Whitmer maced the referee, then John James.  Peters rolled up James to get the win.”
Crowder interrupts and informs Suave that the Progressive Alliance are now 2-0 against the American Patriots in the Senate Medallion competition.  Suave no-sells Crowder and corrects her.
Johnny Suave: “With the win, it’s now tied up at two and two for the night.  Mark Kelly and Gary Peters win for the Progressive Alliance.  Lindsey Graham and Tommy Tuberville for the American Patriots.  The Progressive Alliance won a tight House War Games Match.  And now it’s down to our final two matches of the night.  The PCW Women’s Title match.  And the PCW Title match.”
Crowder attempts to cut in but Suave gets a message in his earpiece.   It’s breaking news…
BACKSTAGE Nurse Nellie and the PCW Clean-Up Crew are back at work attending to Ray McAvay.
Johnny Suave: “Dawn McGill is missing.  Charlie Blackwell and ‘PCW Extreme Pizza Delivery Girl’ Tessa Martin were attacked and can’t wrestle now in their matches.  And now Ray McAvay has been taken out.”
Colleen Crowder: “The important thing Johnny is our narrative and our narrative states the Progressive Alliance are doing well tonight- the Donald Trump era of PCW is mercifully coming to an end.”
Quick cut to the American Patriots’ box.
THE AMERICAN PATRIOT BOX The Coke Brothers-Charles and David, financiers and mover and shaker of the American Patriots, and Executive Director of the Lincoln Project Sarah Lenti continue to watch the show from their suite.  The Cokes glance over and meet eyes with…
Quick cut to the Progressive Alliance box.
PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE BOX …George Moros, big money spender and mover and shaker in the Progressive Alliance.  There’s smiles all the way around.
Johnny Suave: “Well.  The Cokes and Moros seem pleased with the turn of events here.  Too pleased.”
Suave thinks something is definitely up.
A STREET CORNER IN STANSTEAD, QUEBEC Along the banks of the River Tomifobia at the street sign marking the corner of Rue Dufferin and Cordeau and with a large blue sign welcoming people to the province of Quebec in the background, stand Meghan Markle and her bonny Prince Harry.
Meghan Markle: As long as that contemptable Donald Trump is the CEO of the Political Universe, this is as close as I’m going to get to the border of the United States.
Prince Harry: Yes dear.  Whatever you want, dear.
Markle is at least happy that a proper woman will hold the PCW Women’s title after tonight- Kathryn Randall Collins.
Meghan Markle: She’ll be much better than that awful Sierra Whalen.
She adds that KRC’s win will be another shot across the bow to get rid of Trump and allow her to return to Los Angeles- home of the enlightened people.
Prince Harry: If we could could just fly in for a weekend, we could get to see KRC wrestle and-
And that sends the royal into a fit.
Meghan Markle: NO. NOnononononoNO!
Markle hops up and down and screams.
Meghan Markle: I will NOT set foot in that country until that horrible man is out of power.  She turns to Harry who sighs.
Prince Harry: Whatever she wants- she gets.
Cut back to the broadcast desk…
Johnny Suave: Well, I’ll give her credit for sticking to her guns and actually staying out of the country – unlike the other celebs who swore up and down they were going to leave the country and didn’t.
Colleen Crowder: It’s not fair.  If Donald Trump would just go away, Meghan Markle could finally come home.
Johnny Suave: Well, there’s another reason to hope Donald Trump prevails in 2020.
Colleen Crowder: JOHNNY!
youtube
The entrance music of Sierra Whalen comes on and the Alaskan Rogue appears.
‘Alaskan Rogue’ Sierra Whalen AGE: 29 / HT: 5’ 9” WT: 120 / HOME: Palmer, AK FIN: Eskimo Pieface
Johnny Suave: “KRC versus Sierra Whalen.  It’s time for our first main event of the night.  The PCW Women’s Title match.”
Whalen makes her way down towards the ring.
youtube
KRC comes out next.
Kathryn Randall Collins “KRC” AGE: 37 / HT: 5′ 11″ WT: 145 / HOME: Ft. Myers, FL FIN: Gogoplata
Colleen Crowder: I agree wholeheartedly with Meghan Markle.  If there’s any justice in this world, that little inbred redneck will not get a sniff of a chance to win the belt.  Kathryn Randall Collins is a proper role model for women and we believe she will win.
The national media has also arrived at ringside: CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, MSNBC, Fox News, One America News, and NewsMax.  Immediately, the ‘traditional’ news outlets (CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and MSNBC) object to OAN and NewsMax being at ringside and there’s a lot of back and forth chirping between the two sides.
The referee is ready to go and the match begins.
**********************************
MAIN EVENT #1/PCW WOMEN’S TITLE MATCH:
Kathryn Randall Collins (Progressive Alliance) vs. ‘Alaskan Rogue’ Sierra Whalen (American Patriots)
**********************************
Johnny Suave: “This is for the PCW Women’s title!”
KRC and Whalen eye each other as they slowly meet at the center.  Lock up.  Whalen looks to have gained the advantage but KRC swiftly takes an arm wringer.  Whalen reverses – KRC reverses back – Whalen reverses and shoves KRC away.  We start over.  The crowd buzzes as again KRC and Whalen glare at each other.  They circle.  Lock up – Whalen takes a chop from Parker. Whalen returns the favor.  KRC feints a chop and drives a thrust kick into the chest of Whalen.  Whalen down – cover.  One – two – Whalen shoots the shoulder up and rolls out of the ring.  KRC paces back and forth impatiently.
ABC’s Martha Raddatz and Jon Karl immediately grab Whalen and throw her back into the ring.
Johnny Suave: “And there’s our impartial, independent media at work again.”
Colleen Crowder: “They’re just doing their job Johnny.”
Lock up.  KRC takes control.  Belly to back suplex.  Collins then hits three rolling gutwrench suplexes in a row.  Cover.  One – two – Whalen kicks out.
Suave thinks that was a ‘fast count.’
Colleen Crowder: “That was a perfect count.”
Whalen slowly climbs back to her feet.  KRC waves her towards her – Whalen swipes at KRC.  KRC boots Whalen again!  KRC rocks Whalen with an uppercut – another uppercut.  She runs the ropes and eats a shoulder block from Whalen.  Whalen covers.  One…………two…….. KRC kicks out.
Johnny Suave: “Okay.  That count seemed to be a little on the slow side.”
Colleen Crowder: “All these complaints about the counts.  Gosh Johnny, it’s like you want Sierra Whalen to win.”
Johnny Suave: “Actually Colleen, it’s glaringly evident to everyone with the IQ of a brick that you want KRC to win.”
Crowder goes indignant but the match continues.
KRC takes Whalen to the ropes and drags her head across the ropes.  She backs up and throws another haymaker.  KRC runs the ropes – Whalen backdrops KRC and then follows with a snap suplex.  She lays the boots to KRC and drops a leg on her thigh.  Whalen’s elbow connects. KRC pushes back and staggers to get up.  Whalen pushes her backward and rushes in to ram into her against the corner turnbuckle.  Whalen fires off furious fists.  She’s admonished by the referee for using a closed fist.  KRC returns fire and Whalen backs away.  She looks at the referee- the referee shakes his head.
Johnny Suave: “And that wasn’t a closed fist?”
Colleen Crowder: “Stop being so obvious.  You want Whalen to win.”
Whalen launches herself forward and whips KRC into the corner.  Now Whalen charges in – MSNBC’s Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow to the ring apron – THEY PULL KRC OUT OF THE WAY!  *COLLISION*  Whalen slams into the corner turnbuckle and slides down to a seated position.  Now MSNBC’s Brian Williams, CNN’s Chris Cuomo and Anderson Cooper blatantly choke Whalen while the referee is ‘distracted.’
Johnny Suave: “WHAT THE HELL?”
The referee finally puts a stop to the Whalen mugging.  KRC back on offense.  Scoop slam.  Cover.  One-two- Whalen kicks out.  KRC lifts her up- DEATH VALLEY DRIVER TO WHALEN!  Cover.  One-two- Whalen just kicks out.
Johnny Suave: “This match has been turned on its ear by blatant outside interference.”
Colleen Crowder: “That’s simply not true Johnny and shame on you for spreading fake news.  We are now projecting that Kathryn Randall Collins will become the new PCW Women’s Champion.”
Whalen reaches for the ropes but her hand’s about a foot and half away.  She tries to inch closer. Finally, KRC whaps her in the back of the head and pulls her to the middle of the ring.  Whalen tries to kick her way out.  KRC sits on her back and grabs hold of her wrists. She crosses Whalen’s arms under her chin and pulls back on the arms.
Johnny Suave: Straitjacket by KRC and she is in control of this match.
Whalen fights out and tries to pull herself up – KRC collects her and drives her to the mat with a powerbomb.  Whalen hits hard. KRC moves in for the kill.  She hooks the leg.  One–two–THREE!
Crowder nearly jumps out of her chair.  She lets out a loud ‘whoop!’
WINNER AND NEW PCW WOMEN’S CHAMPION: Kathryn Randall Collins (Progressive Alliance) @ 10:04
Johnny Suave: “With an assist from the media, Kathryn Randall Collins of the Progressive Alliance has defeated the American Patriots’ Sierra Whalen and she is the new PCW Women’s Champion!”
While KRC celebrates inside the ring, OAN and NewsMax get into a heated argument with CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, MSNBC, and even Fox News over what just happened.
Before Crowder can get started, Suave pre-emptively sends it to a commercial break.
NEW YORK STATE OF MIND New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stands outside his house to make his plea for Joe Biden to bring PCW to the Empire State- New York.
Bill de Blasio: “Joe.  When you become the new PCW CEO tonight, please think about New York City!”
Johnny Suave: “Business leaving in droves.”
In the background, an endless parade of moving trucks pass by.
De Blasio says with all due respect to California, New York City is a big event city.   He hails New York City as the place where nobody sleeps.
While the Mayor speaks, Harry and Marv of Home Alone fame remove furniture and valuables from de Blasio’s house.
Johnny Suave: “Oh.  And a crime problem, too.”
Bill de Blasio: “New York City is the place to be.”
Several moving trucks honk as they drive past.
Bill de Blasio: “So come on Joe.  Move PCW to the big time.  Move to New York City…”
Harry and Marv remove de Blasio’s watch and steal the keys to his car.
Bill de Blasio: “…so you too can live the New York dream!”

Suave begins the pre-match run-up to tonight’s main event by showing highlights from the Progressive Alliance convention.
(VIDEO: PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE MATCH RESULTS) Deval Patrick, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, Michael Bennet, Andrew Yang, Amy Klobucher, Tom Steyer, Michael Bloomberg, Tulsi Gabbard, John K. Delaney, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigleg
Elimination is through being tossed over the top rope.
-Tulsi Gabbard is not allowed into the arena and prevented from participating in the match.
-Delaney and Patrick, Bennet, Steyer, and Yang go really early.
-Klobuchar and Buttgleg put up more of a fight but then they fall away.
Mike Bloomberg labored throughout the match and gets rolled up out of the blue by Elizabeth Warren.  Bloomberg finishes a disappointing fourth.
Warren goes next.  Sanders pins her.
Then it’s down to two- Sanders vs. Biden.
This comes down to Sanders and Biden grappling on the mat.  Sanders rolls him up.
One…
Two…
South Carolina Senator Jim Clyburn, with the blessing of the Progressive Alliance establishment, runs in and rolls Biden on top of Sanders.

Three!  The referee calls for the bell.
WINNER: Joe Biden @ 19:50
(END VIDEO)
Johnny Suave: “That’s how Joe Biden won his math.  Let’s see how Donald Trump got here as he faced off against Joe Walsh (hint: NOT the guitarist) and William Weld in the American Patriots match at their convention.”
(VIDEO: AMERICAN PATRIOTS MATCH RESULTS) CEO of the Political Universe Donald Trump (R-NY) vs. Joe Walsh (R-IL) vs. William Weld (R-MA)
The bell sounds.
Trump comes out and kicks Walsh in the balls.  DDT by Trump.  Cover.
Walsh is eliminated.  (:12)
Then Weld rushes in.  Trump drop toeholds Weld and he hits the corner turnbuckle.  Cover.
One…two…THREE- Weld’s done. (:25)
WINNER: Donald Trump @ :25
(END VIDEO)
Johnny Suave: “Donald Trump took an easy victory over Joe Walsh and William Weld and now we’ve reached the moment of truth.  Our ring announcer is Kimber Marshall and let’s send it to her now.”
Marshall stands in the middle of the ring.
Kimber Marshall: “Ladies and gentlemen, this match will be…”
Crowd: ONE fall!
Kimber Marshall: “And it will be for the PCW Title!  Introducing first…
youtube
Johnny Suave: “Ah.  Bruce Springsteen.  Another one of the many celebs who’ve promised to move out of the US if Trump wins.”
Colleen Crowder: “Don’t you bad mouth ‘The Boss.’  Springsteen speaks the truth.”
Joe Biden comes out with his wife Dr. Jill Biden (and don’t you forget the ‘Dr.’ part).  Behind him is his choice for Aide de Camp Kamala Harris.
Then Marshall announces the Progressive Alliance wrestler taking part in the match.
‘Mr. Hollywood’ Kevin Daniels HT: 6′ 0″ WT: 200 / HOME: Hollywood, CA FIN: The True Hollywood Blockbuster
Daniels comes out and shakes hands with both Bidens and Kamala Harris.
Kimber Marshall: “And their opponent…”
https://youtu.be/-bzWSJG93P8
The supporters “TRUMP!  TRUMP! TRUMP!” chant merges with the melody of the Imperial March and becomes:
“TRUMP.
TRUMP.
TRUMP.
TRUMP-TRUMP-TRUMMMMP
TRUMP-TRUMP-TRUMMMMP”
Dressed in all black complete with a flowing black cape, Donald Trump and his spokesperson Kayleigh McEnaney walk out on stage to a big ovation from the American Patriots.
Kimber Marshall: Residing in the Trump Tower in the great city of New York, New York!  He promises to…
The Trump supporters shout out: “MAKE PCW GREAT AGAIN!”
Kimber Marshall: Accompanied by his Aide de Camp Mike Pence and representing the American Patriots!  LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!  THE CURRENT CEO OF PCW- DONALD J. TRUMP!
Again, the Trump supporters let loose with thunderous roar that shakes the building.  Trump nods and acknowledges the fans.
Johnny Suave: “Here he is.  The current CEO of PCW.  Donald Trump.”
Colleen Crowder: “Ugh.  And he’s being led to the ring by… her.”
Johnny Suave: “You’re just saying that because Kayleigh McEnaney won’t play the ‘game’ the way you want her to play.”
McEnaney leads the way as Trump, black robe ruffling behind him as he strides, makes his way down the steps from the stage toward the ring followed by Mike Pence and Pence’s wife Karen.
Marshall then announces the American Patriots’s wrestler.
‘Starz N. Stripes’ Kevin Scott HT: 6′ 3″ WT: 250, HOME: Ottumwa, IA FIN: American Stars and Fujiawa Arm Bar
Scott walks out on stage and shakes hands with Trump, Pence, Mrs. Pence.  Then the entourage heads towards the ring.
Johnny Suave: “So here we are.  This is for the PCW title and then we will find out who will be the PCW CEO for the next four years.”
Colleen Crowder: “We already know the answer.  It’s going to be Joe Biden.”
Biden shouts encouragement to Kevin Daniels- but he’s facing the wrong way.  Harris subtly turns him around towards the ring.
Before the match starts, Suave and Crowder are joined by a special guest- the CEO of Facetwitogram Jack Buckenberg.

MAIN EVENT #2/PCW TITLE MATCH:
‘Starz N. Stripes’ Kevin Scott w/PCW CEO Donald Trump, Aide de Camp Mike Pence (American Patriots) vs. ‘Mr. Hollywood’ Kevin Daniels w/PCW CEO candidate Joe Biden, Aide de Camp candidate Kamala Harris (Progressive Alliance)
**********************************
The bell sounds and the match begins.
Scott rushes forward.  Daniels side-steps him.  The two men circle.  Scott aggressively comes forward.  Daniels plays defense and makes him chase.   Daniels connects with a spin kick that gives Scott some pause.  Quick lock up – Scott takes a headlock – Daniels slips out.  Scott fires off right and left hands. He follows with a standing spinebuster.  Hooks the leg – one – two – Daniels kicks out and calls a ‘time-out.’  He rolls outside the ring and confers with Biden and Harris.
Johnny Suave: “Kevin Scott off to a fast start here causing Mr. Hollywood to bail out of the ring.”
Jack Buckenberg: “Actually Johnny, before you share this content, you might want to know that fact-checking sites, Snope.com, and other media sources have disputed the accuracy of it.”
Colleen Crowder: “Yeah!  Kevin Daniels is probably just getting warmed up and wanted to talk strategy with Joe Biden.”
Once back in, Daniels and Scott tie up – Scott gains control.  He wrenches, hammerlocks, and throws forearms into Daniels’s back.  Headlock by Scott and hits the takeover.  Scott tries to grind Daniels down.   Daniels fights up and around but Scott wrenches the arm again.  Scott takes a wristlock.  Daniels throws a couple body shots.  Surprise roll into a REAR NAKED CHOKE!  Scott elbows out.   Daniels with a drop toehold and gets the legs to hook them.  One – Scott powers out.  Scott goes for a rear bear hug – Daniels fights his way out with elbows.  Daniels backdrops Scott to the mat.  Scott up – Daniels legsweeps him back down.  Cover.  One – two – no.  Scott powers out.
Johnny Suave: “Better from Kevin Daniels there.  He seems to be coming into the match.”
Colleen Crowder: “Johnny, I don’t know what match you’ve been watching but it’s clear Daniels is totally dominating the match.”
Johnny Suave: “That’s debatable.”
Jack Buckenberg: “Actually Johnny, we’ll allow it.  It’s a factual statement.”
Johnny Suave: “Of course you will.”
Scott nails Daniels with a kick to the jaw.  Cover.  One – two – 2.5 – Daniels just kicks out before the three count.  Scott boots Daniels in the gut.  Daniels drops to a knee – Scott drags him right back up.  He goes to whip Daniels – Daniels reverses and knees Scott low and hard!  Daniels hits the ropes and Scott ducks under.  Another boot to the gut and a Sling Blade takes Daniels down.  Cover.  One – Two – NO! Daniels just gets the shoulder up.
Johnny Suave: “Another close pinfall for Kevin Scott.  He is really doing well here tonight.”
Jack Buckenberg: “Again Johnny, before you share something like that, you should know that independent fact checkers dispute its accuracy.”
Johnny Suave: “It’s an opinion Jack that I’m entitled to based on what I’ve witnessed here during the match.”
Jack Buckenberg: “Once again, what you said is disputed by third party fact checkers.”
Johnny Suave: “*BLEEP* your third-party fact checkers.”
Daniels grows a little frustrated.  He goes to the referee and starts to berate him.  This allows Kamala Harris to sneak into the ring with a steel-folding chair.  She raises it up – Mike Pence runs in- followed by his wife Karen (Pence never eats alone with a woman other than his wife and won’t attend events featuring alcohol without her by his side).  Mike grabs the chair and stops Harris – the chair falls and accidently lands on Harris’s foot.
Colleen Crowder: “MIKE PENCE DID THAT ON PURPOSE!”
Johnny Suave: “Harris was going to hit ‘Starz N. Stripes’ Kevin Scott with that chair.”
Jack Buckenberg: “Er.  Independent fact-checkers say that statement contains false information-“
Suave turns off Buckenberg’s microphone.
Crowder goes ballistic and demands Suave turn Buckenberg’s microphone back on.
Johnny Suave: “I guess it really does suck when you get censored, huh.”
Pence apologizes to Harris for the incident.
Harris kicks him in the groin.
Johnny Suave: “Ooooh.  Apology not accepted.  And Kamala Harris did that on purpose.”
Colleen Crowder: “She did not!  She……….um, slipped.”
Karen Pence then tackles Harris in the ring and both women roll around on the mat.
Johnny Suave: “CAT-FIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!  CAT-FIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!”
Colleen Crowder: “Okay.  That was totally offensive, Johnny.”
Meanwhile, Daniels runs the ropes – Scott ducks a clothesline and waits for him to come back to clock Daniels with a right hand.  Scott blocks a suplex attempt using the power of gravity. Daniels walks into a body slam.  Scott covers.  One – two – 2.999!  Daniels just gets a shoulder off the mat.  Scott CLOBBERS Daniels with a right hand.  Cover.  One – two – THR-THE REFEREE GETS PULLED OUT OF THE RING!
Johnny Suave: “WHAT THE HELL?”
All three members of the Guild of Low Level Media People Trying to Make a Name for Themselves Colleen Crowder- New York Times, Sharon Johns- CNN, and Dan Miller- Washington Post yank the referee out of the ring.
All hell breaks loose.  The media climb into the ring while another referee appears and rolls in under the ropes.
Scott’s trying to figure out what’s going on.  Daniels just gets back to his feet and even he’s wondering what’s happening.
The referee calls for the bell.  He goes to ring announcer Kimber Marshall and tells her what his decision is.
Marshall climbs into the ring and makes the announcement.
WINNER AND NEW PCW MEN’S CHAMPION: ‘Mr. Hollywood’ Kevin Daniels (Progressive Alliance) @ 10:48
Johnny Suave: “WHAT?”
A huge celebration erupts in the ring as Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, Pennsylvania State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and former Georgia Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams join Daniels, the Bidens, Harris, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and the Guild of Low Level Media People Trying to Make a Name for Themselves (Crowder-NY Times, Johns-CNN, and Miller-Washington Post).
Outside the ring and around the bar- not so much.  The PCW fans are shocked.  Kevin Scott is stunned at the decision.  Trump is furious and tries to corral the referee but the ref is in the middle of the Progressive Alliance party going on in the ring.
Johnny Suave: “Kevin Daniels has been named the new PCW champion even though he did not pin ‘Starz N. Stripes’ Kevin Scott.”
If the PCW fans didn’t like the Daniels decision, they definitely didn’t like what happened next…
THE DECISION.  TRUMP OR BIDEN? The Coke Brothers (Charles and David), George Moros, Lincoln Project Executive Director Sarah Lenti slowly make their way down to the ring.
Johnny Suave: “HOLY CRAP!”
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Johnny Suave: “The fans have already connected the dots on this one.  Dawn McGill- missing.  The DC Establishment is here.”
The Cokes, Moros, and Lenti have to duck and dodge debris.
Biden stands in front of the big group that’s gathered inside the ring for the announcement.   Donald Trump stands on the outside.
The four climb into the ring.  Moros has a microphone and he doesn’t waste any time.
George Moros: “Joe Biden-“
The Progressive Alliance explode with joy inside the ring.
Johnny Suave: “THAT’S IT!  JOE BIDEN HAS BEEN SELECTED TO BECOME THE NEW CEO OF POLITICAL CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!”
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Biden looks towards Trump for the traditional post-match handshake- but Trump has already left ringside and headed towards the back.
Johnny Suave: “NO HANDSHAKE.  TRUMP’S GOING TO THE BACK.”
Suave wraps up the show by reviewing the results.

Why We’re Not ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: States Are Boldly Expanding Abortion Access and Fiercely Protecting Bodily Autonomy
You’ve heard the comparisons: the America we live in now is a few steps away from The Handmaid’s Tale. In that show and the book it’s based on, women live under a dictatorship that controls their bodies. Women don’t get to decide whether to be pregnant or raise a child — while an authoritarian, male-dominated regime uses flowery, religious rhetoric to make their abuse sound virtuous.
In real life, politicians are trying to ban abortion, rob women of their bodily autonomy, and risk women’s health — all while pretending to claim the moral high ground. The outright abortion ban that passed in Alabama, and the six-week abortion bans that have passed in several states portend a monumental challenge to Roe v. Wade — the 1973 Supreme Court case that affirmed the constitutional right to access abortion. And if the Supreme Court overturns Roe, at least 20 states are poised to outlaw abortion.
But that’s not the end of the story. Just as in The Handmaid’s Tale, the resistance is strong. There is hope. And unlike Gilead, we still have free speech in America — and we’re using the power of our collective voice to fight back and make real gains.
You don't need to take our word for it. The Handmaid’s Tale cast has condemned abortion bans and said, loud and clear: This is not Gilead.
Tumblr media
The Good News
Pro-reproductive health lawmakers are stepping up not only to protect people’s health and ensure abortion remains safe and legal in their states, but also to expand access. In several state legislatures, lawmakers have taken abortion out of the criminal code to treat it as what it is: health care. Their landmark bills are changing the abortion landscape in their states for the better,
Enacted: New York’s Reproductive Health Act
When the Reproductive Health Act was signed into law in New York in January, anti-abortion politicians spewed explosive lies about it, which the New York State Senate has corrected time and again. Here's what the law actually does:
Affirms abortion is a “fundamental right” in the state of New York. It ensures that, if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, abortion would remain a legal health procedure — and patients and doctors would not go to jail.
Moves abortion regulations off the state’s criminal code (where it had been for almost 50 years) and onto its health code.
Expands access to abortion later in pregnancy if the woman’s health is at risk or if the pregnancy cannot survive.
New York’s Reproductive Health Act is one of the strongest protections for abortion access in the country. It’s about making sure that at every point in a pregnancy, a woman's health (and not politicians’ ideology), drives medical decisions.
Tumblr media
Enacted: Nevada’s Trust Nevada Women Act
In May, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak signed the Trust Nevada Women Act into law. Like New York’s Reproductive Health Act, it strikes down ancient criminal punishments for providing abortion. In addition, Nevada doctors are no longer forced to ascertain a woman’s marital status or age, and don’t have to parrot a state-mandated script with politically motivated and inaccurate warnings about the "emotional implications" of abortion.
Enacted: Illinois’s Reproductive Health Act
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the state’s Reproductive Health Act into law on June 12. The Illinois Reproductive Health Act codifies into law that abortion is not a crime. It also fixes the state’s outdated abortion law with regulations that reflect current medical standards.
Tumblr media
Enacted: Vermont’s Act to Preserve the Right to Abortion
In Vermont, another sweeping abortion rights bill passed the legislature and has been signed by the G.O.P. governor Phil Scott . The legislation — H.57, "An Act Relating to Preserving the Right to Abortion" — affirms "the fundamental right of every individual who becomes pregnant to choose to carry a pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion." The measure stops law enforcement from prosecuting abortion providers.
Passed to Full Senate: Rhode Island’s Reproductive Health Care Act
Rhode Island’s Reproductive Health Care Act protects the right to safe, legal abortion. It also repeals unconstitutional laws from Rhode Island's law book. On June 13, the state Senate Committee on Health and Human Services voted to pass the legislation to the Senate floor.
Introduced: Massachusetts’s ROE Act
Reproductive health champions in Massachusetts recently introduced the Remove Obstacles and Expand (ROE) Abortion Access Act in the state House and Senate. Like reproductive health acts in other states, the ROE Act would put the right to abortion in state law and allow for abortion care later in pregnancy under medical conditions that threaten the woman’s health. It also nixes parental consent and 24-hour waiting period requirements, as well as corrects inflammatory and medically inaccurate definitions of abortion and pregnancy in the current law.
Tumblr media
Building on Strength
These states illustrate the power and momentum of the abortion rights movement. In fact, 25 states have introduced bills to affirm and protect reproductive rights during their 2019 legislative sessions.
As of this writing, 12 states have already enacted laws that would protect the right to abortion if Roe v. Wade were overturned. That list includes Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Vermont as mentioned above, as well as California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Oregon and Washington.
Tumblr media
Good News from the Courts, Attorneys General
In addition to passing bills in state legislatures, reproductive-rights champions are moving to safeguard abortion access through the courts. In April, the Kansas Supreme Court affirmed that the state’s constitution guarantees the right to “decide whether to continue a pregnancy.” That ruling could pave the way for advocates of safe and legal abortion to challenge abortion restrictions in Kansas.
Meanwhile, attorneys general in Michigan and New Mexicopledged not to prosecute people seeking abortion or abortion providers if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Both states have laws on the books that would criminalize abortion if Roe is overturned.
Americans Support Abortion Access
This wave of legal, and public affirmations reflects Americans’ strong support for access to safe, legal abortion. A vast majority of people in the United States — 77% of Americans, in fact — do not want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Join the Resistance
The biggest difference between America now and The Handmaid’s Tale: We don’t have to resist in the shadows. We can be loud and proud. We can shout our solidarity from the rooftops. We can fight back in the open.
Use your voice. Tell your elected officials to get their #BansOffMyBody.
Bans Off My Body
Our bodies are our own — if they are not, we cannot be truly free or equal. Our right to abortion care is not debatable.
Sign on to say: No bans. Not now, not ever.

Pluralistic: 10 Mar 2020 (Pandemic firewalls, water neoliberalism meets covid, Piketty backs Sanders, Sonos stops bricking, Brave vs canvas attacks)
Tumblr media
Today's links
Safe and moral societies need "firewalls" between immigration and public services: The UK's "hostile environment" puts everyone at risk.
Detroit will reconnect water services during the Covid-19 emergency: But it's $25/month thereafter.
Thomas Piketty endorses Sanders: both his program and his electability.
Sonos "recycling mode" no longer bricks working speakers: Fire the person who came up with this deeply shitty idea.
Brave will randomize browser profiles to fight fingerprinting attacks: More from the most privacy-friendly browser.

Safe and moral societies need "firewalls" between immigration and public services (permalink)
The UK took the decision to "create a hostile environment" for migrants, which entails denying medical care to those who can't prove their entitlement to it. Seeking care in the UK comes with threats to your residency and/or titanic bills.
http://crookedtimber.org/2020/03/10/covid-19-and-migration-we-need-a-firewall/
This creates enormous deterrents to seeking medical care, which means that migrants – disproportionately found in low-waged jobs including cleaning and food service – are less likely to seek care or present themselves for testing if they develop symptoms. It also means that they're not entitled to paid leave, which means that potentially infectious people are being incentivised to turn up for work.
In "The Ethics of Immigration," Joseph Carens argues for a "firewall" between public services and immigration enforcement, specifically to address situations like these (and also related issues, like spousal abuse, child abuse, etc).
https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-ethics-of-immigration-9780199933839
A civilised society shouldn't put people at risk of violence in order to attain its immigration goals.
A healthy society – one that contains the spread of pandemics – can't afford to put its immigration goals ahead of these matters.
It's both ethical and pragmatic.
Likewise (and doubly so) for the refugee gulags created Greece and Australia. It's not only inhumane to deprive the people in these camps of care – it's also a way to create and sustain reservoirs of illness that will spread into your general population.
As Chris Bertram writes, "[Authoritarians will] use COVID-19 to advance their nationalist and anti-immigrant agenda. Journalists need to ask them what they are doing to stop that very agenda from having consequences that shame and endanger us all."
Tumblr media
Detroit will reconnect water services during the Covid-19 emergency (permalink)
Michigan has been a living laboratory for neoliberal cruelty, as gerrymandering has allowed the rich white people to dominate the state, stripmine its public assets, and privatize its services, leading to mass evictions (and the lead crisis in Flint).
https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/detroit-to-restore-water-service-to-unpaid-homes-to-allow-people-to-wash-their-hands-to-avoid-coronavirus
In Detroit, many people are without (substandard) water, as they've been faced with the choice of paying rent or paying the water bill. This means that they can't wash their hands. So the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit have teamed up to turn on peoples' water during the crisis. The reconnection fee of $25 (a tax on poor people) will be picked up by the state. But it will be $25/month afterwards.
Many people will be able to afford the $25/month. Some will not. Who doesn't have $25/month for water? The poorest, most vulnerable people, who are disproportionately likely to be immunocompromised and susceptible to Covid-19.
Michigan – whose neoliberal belief in "moral hazard" dictates that poor people should not have benefits – has engineered a situation in which the state is full of desperately poor people who will sicken the people around them.
If you or someone you love in Detroit has no water, you can get your service reconnected starting tomorrow at 313-386-9727.

Thomas Piketty endorses Sanders (permalink)
Thomas Piketty's Capital in the 21st Century quantified the rise of inequality, provided evidence for the policies that create and preserve it, and warned of the social instability it engenders (that is, guillotines).
https://boingboing.net/2014/06/24/thomas-pikettys-capital-in-t.html
Piketty's Capital was notable for laying out a rigorous, quantitative basis for the left's concerns over inequality, and it also rebutted the right's idea that inequality was an emergent property of meritocracy. Boris Johnson once told City bankers: when you shake a cornflake box, the big flakes rise to the top and the little flakes sink to the bottom.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/nov/28/boris-johnson-iq-comments
Piketty showed that the most reliable predictor of increased wealth over time wasn't accomplishment, it was wealth. Rich people get richer, regardless of whether they contribute to society. Poor people generally don't, no matter what they contribute.
Today, Piketty has endorsed Bernie Sanders's candidacy, policies, and electability, applying the same rigor to these that he applied to his time-series data on capital flows and inequality.
https://www.lemonde.fr/blog/piketty/2020/03/10/sanders-to-the-aid-of-democracy-in-the-united-states/
It "is not an 'extremist' statement" to say that Medicare for All will "enable the American population to be cared for more efficiently and more cheaply than the present private and extremely unequal system."
"Sanders is right when he proposes large-scale public investment in favour of education and public universities…The failure of [Reagan-style education policy] is patent today with growth of national income per capita being halved and an unprecedented rise in inequality."
Piketty endorses a $15 federal minimum wage: "Learn from the experiences in co-management and voting rights for employees on the Boards of Directors of firms implemented successfully in Germany and in Sweden for decades."
On a wealth tax that tops at 8%: "this corresponds to the reality of the excessive concentration of wealth in the United States and the fiscal and administrative capacities of the American federal state, which has already been demonstrated historically."
And on polls: "The problem of the repeated assertions that Biden would be better placed to beat Trump is that they have no objective factual basis… Sanders mobilises the working-class electorate more than Biden.. mobilises the vast majority of the Latino vote and crushes Biden amongst the 18-29 years age group, as he does in the 30-44 years group…Sanders has the best scores amongst the underprivileged… whereas Biden, on the contrary, has the best scores amongst the most privileged.
"The highest potential for mobilisation is amongst the most underprivileged social categories.
"…The cynical, and unfortunately very commonplace vision amongst the Democratic elites, that nothing can be done to mobilise further the working-class vote, is extremely dangerous. This cynicism weakens the legitimacy of the democratic electoral system itself."
If you (like me) loved Warren's campaign because it appealed to the wonk in you, then this should be of real significance. Piketty is the wonk's wonk, an expert whose key work is a 15-year-long study of 300 years' worth of capital flows, which shifted the global debate.
Piketty's endorsement of Warren's wealth tax was hugely important. His endorsement of Sanders' entire program, and Sanders' electability, is even more important at this phase of the battle to abolish Trumpism and save our planet.

Sonos "recycling mode" no longer bricks working speakers (permalink)
When you get rid of a Sonos product – either through a trade in or disposal – the company advised you to trigger "recycling mode" to wipe your account data. But this didn't wipe the speaker – it bricked it.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/03/sonos-backtracks-on-bricking-your-trade-ins-will-allow-reuse/
IOW: invoking the Sonos "recycling mode" made your device into e-waste (if you want to wipe your personal data, you could just factory reset the speaker).
Thankfully, the company has seen the error of its ways. The app no longer has the "recycle mode" option. The company is working on an alternative (which, one hopes, will not be as malicious and deceptive as the previous version). The reason for bricking devices is obvious: it eliminates competition from used devices. The reasons not to do it are also obvious: it's terrible.
Whomever came up with this policy at Sonos is a colossal asshole. The whole company should be ashamed. I am a Sonos customer (bought Sonos One speakers when they started making a model with no mic) and I enjoy them, but I don't know that I'll ever trust the company.

Brave will randomize browser profiles to fight fingerprinting attacks (permalink)
Brave is one of the two browsers I use every day (the other is Firefox). I really like the company's approach to privacy and user-control, which is deeply embedded in their culture (unlike Mozilla, Brave fought against DRM in browsers at the W3C, for example).
One of the risks to web privacy is "canvas" or "fingerprinting" attacks, which identifies users by the unique attributes of their browsers (version, OS, fonts, plugins, screen size, etc). EFF has been sounding the alarm about this for years.
https://panopticlick.eff.org/
This has gone from "theoretical risk" to "main tool for user tracking" in a few short years. Browsers take different approaches to fighting these attacks, but I like Brave's: it's going to randomize browser data when it's requested by servers.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/brave-to-generate-random-browser-fingerprints-to-preserve-user-privacy/
Brave says the other tactics used to block fingerprinting are "useless" and describes how randomization is more effective, citing peer-reviewed studies to support its case.
https://brave.com/whats-brave-done-for-my-privacy-lately-episode3/
This is the kind of best-practice that ever browser vendor should be adopting. Of course, we also need a federal privacy bill with a private right of action, and until we get one, this is doubly important.

Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Bomfree (c. 1797- 1883), started life enslaved in New York. She was separated from her parents by age nine and sold to another enslaver for 100 dollars and a flock of sheep. She would be sold two more times before she was thirteen. This was all while being subjected to horrendous physical labor and violent punishments.
Around eighteen, she fell in love with an enslaved man on a neighboring farm. The two were not permitted to marry since they were owned by separate enslavers. Instead she was forced to marry another enslaved person owned by the enslaver who possessed her. She eventually had five children.
As New York began to legalize emancipation, not all enslaved people were freed. The enslaver who owned Isabella insisted that she could earn her freedom by July of 1826 if she ‘would be well and faithful.’ This man, of course, rescinded on his promise, and instead Isabella escaped with her infant daughter. She was taken by a local abolitionist family. When the enslaver came to collect his ‘property,’ the family purchased Isabella’s services from him for twenty dollars until the New York Anti-Slavery Law emancipated all enslaved people in the state in 1827.
After the New York Anti-Slavery Law was passed, Isabella’s former enslaver illegally sold her five-year-old son. With the assistance of the abolitionist family, Isabella filed a suit to win her son back. Months later, she won and regained custody of her son, becoming the first black woman to prevail against a white man in a US court.
Changed by her new experiences, she converted to Christianity and moved to New York City. Isabella worked as a maid in a few local houses. When she switched from one household to the other, her former employer suddenly died. She was falsely accused of his murder but was eventually acquitted. Her son took a job on a whaling ship around this time, but never returned home.
In 1843, she became a Methodist and changed her name to Sojourner Truth, saying the Spirit of God called on her to preach the truth. She eventually joined the Northampton Association of Education and Industry, an organization founded by abolitionists supporting women’s rights, religious tolerance, and pacifism. It was here she was first encouraged to speak on her experience and the evils of enslavement. She gave her first speech on the subject that year.
Though Sojourner Truth never learned to read or write, she dictated a biography to a friend in 1850. She survived on the sales from the book and it brought her national recognition. She met activists involved in women's rights and temperance, both causes she quickly took up as her own. In 1851, Sojourner participated in a lecture tour, that included a Women's Rights Conference. It was there she gave her infamous speech which came to be known as “Ain’t I a Woman.”
When the Civil War began, she urged young black men to enlist and organized supplies for black troops as well. After the war, she was invited to Washington DC to take part in the National Freedman's Relief Association, helping freed slaves find jobs and start new lives. She rallied folks to donate food, clothes, and other supplies for Black refugees.
In the 1860s, Abraham Lincoln invited her to the White House. She would spend her time in Washing DC working herself to desegregate streetcars there. In later life, she exhaustively petitioned Congress to grant freed slaves with land, though they never took action. She was also outspoken on topics of capitol punishment and prison reform.
Sojourner continued speaking and fighting for the public until her advanced age prevented her from doing so. She was increasingly concerned that Black men who were civil rights leaders such as Frederick Douglass were not as concerned about furthering the rights of Black women. She spent her final years in Battle Creek, Michigan, where her funeral service had the largest turnout the town had seen.
