Charmed (2018) fans: This is a reinterpretation, a modern-day Charmed. You aren’t meant to sit there and compare it to the original. Harry isn’t Leo; Macy, Maggie, and Mel aren’t the original Charmed Ones. It’s a darker interpretation of the original Charmed. If someone is just gonna compare shows, they shouldn’t be watching them.
Okay, except here’s the thing: The reboot’s showrunners gave it the same name, the same basic concept, almost the same logo, and even use some of the original show’s mythology (Whitelighters, Darklighters, a Council of Elders, a demonic Underworld with a hierarchy, the Source of All Evil). There are numerous call-backs to the original show in the form of the Window of Opportunity, a split-second shot of Melinda Warren (the progenitor of the Warren line of witches and ancestress of the Charmed Ones) in the Veras’ Book of Shadows, Mel’s girlfriend being a police officer who gets tangled up in the Charmed Ones’ magical lives (a la Andy Trudeau), and Parker and Maggie’s relationship was directly inspired by Phoebe and Cole’s relationship in the original show, complete with Parker becoming the Demon Overlord in season 2 and asking Maggie for her hand in marriage as his queen. Not to mention Harry and Macy is the reboot’s equivalent to the Piper and Leo ship.
The network CANNOT do all of that, capitalizing on the original series’ name and fanbase, and then not expect people to compare the two shows. Especially not when Constance M. Burge, the creator of the original show, is credited in the reboot’s pilot despite having absolutely nothing to do with the reboot. (Legally, they had to credit her.)
As for this reboot being a darker interpretation of the original Charmed? Only in terms of the lighting, maybe. The original show’s pilot (“Something Wicca This Way Comes”) alone dealt with three estranged sisters moving back into their childhood home after the sudden death of their grandmother, discovering new powers and the fact they’re witches (all on their own, no less; Leo didn’t show up until the third episode and the sisters don’t find out he was a Whitelighter until 14 episodes into the 22-episode season), a serial killer who turns out to be a warlock (and Piper’s boyfriend) targeting female witches to gain their powers. He then tries to kill Piper before she freezes him and makes her escape, and then he goes after her in an attempt to murder all three sisters before they use the Power of Three to vanquish him (again, all on their own).
As for the rest of the season:
s01e02 “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” features a demon who poses as a photographer and targets beautiful young women to steal their youth, leaving them either charred skeletons or as old women (if the process is interrupted)
s01e03 “Thank You for Not Morphing”: Victor, the sisters’ long-lost estranged dad, suddenly comes back into his daughters’ lives after they’ve discovered that they’re witches, plays on Phoebe’s longing to form a connection with him, and is revealed to be working with shapeshifting demons to steal the Book of Shadows
s01e04 “Dead Man Dating” is essentially a supernatural murder investigation, with Mark enlisting the Charmed Ones’ help (as, being witches, they’re the only ones who can see him) in catching his killer before his soul is dragged to the Chinese afterlife by Yama
s01e05 “Dream Sorcerer”: the antagonist is a mortel incel asshole researching dream-leaping, using his abilities to kill women who’ve rejected him by invadng their dreams and murdering them in the dreamscape he’s created, which kills his victims in real life. He repeatedly targets Prue, and he dies before Inspectors Andy Trudeau and Darryl Morris can question him.
s01e07 “The Fourth Sister”: a lonely teenage girl with an interest in witchcraft is manipulated and preyed upon by an evil entity who presents itself as someone she can trust completely, all so she can be accepted
s01e10 “Wicca Envy”: Prue is framed for the theft of a valuable antique tiara by her boss in an attempt to blackmail the Charmed Ones into giving up their powers
s01e12 “The Wendigo”: the first episode where any of the sisters are transformed into another being against her will, played entirely for horror. Not to mention the serial killer Andy has been tracking down is the very FBI agent who came in to help with the case.
s01e13 “From Fear to Eternity”: aside from the first-ever introduction of Barbas the Demon of Fear, this whole episode revolves around the sisters’ worst fears come to life, and at least 10 other witches are already dead through the course of the episode. Phoebe faces her fear of losing one of her sisters, and Prue finally sees their long-dead mother’s spirit when Patty comes to help her.
s01e14 “Secrets and Guys” a young black male witch (whose only living relative is his father, his witch mother having died of illness a few months prior) is kidnapped by thugs who want to use his powers for a bank heist, kidnap Prue when she comes to help the 13-year-old boy, and it’s heavily implied the robbers would have killed them to tie up loose ends
s01e15 “Is There a Woogey in the House?”: your childhood nightmares are very real. You’re welcome.
s01e18 “When Bad Warlocks Turn Good”: take away the supernatural aspects, and this episode is primarily about a man being pressured by his highly toxic family into a part of their life that he’s already cut himself off from and turned his back on for his own well-being and mental health.
s01e22 “Deja Vu All Over Again”: at the end of each time loop, at least one of the Halliwells has to deal with the pain of seeing a sister die, and on the final time loop Prue sees her boyfriend (who she’d finally opened up to only weeks prior about being a witch) die while he’s trying to protect her and her sisters.
All this while juggling jobs and trying to have a normal life, as well as living in fear of their powers being discovered. The only major emotional stakes in the reboot’s first season are Maggie wanting to get into the sorority, later suddenly discovering she’s half-Black with her and Macy having the same father, and starting a relationship with Parker when he’s technically still dating Lucy; Macy keeping her job at the geneticist lab, trying to start a relationship with Galvin after some mixed signals from them both, and finding out the source of her “darkness”; and Mel using a spell to rewrite reality to keep her police girlfriend Niko safe from demons without bothering to get Niko’s consent first or reveal to her girlfriend that she’s a witch, as well as something something the S’arcana, sticking it to the Elder witches (while secretly working for them), and finding out who murdered her mother. And something about stopping the apocalypse, which the Veras don’t take seriously half the time anyway.
All this in just the first season. The second and third seasons of the reboot aren’t much better, IMO, but if you like the reboot, fine, whatever, you do you. Just don’t get mad when fans compare the two shows, because it’s really difficult not to do so.

Writing a witch based in the Charmed (1998) universe: Things to Know
magical witches are different from practitioners. Practitioners draw on outside sources of magic and can cast spells but are otherwise normal humans. Magical witches are a different humanoid species and have an internal spring from which they access their magic (Prose: Mystic Knoll)
witches are further categorized into lower-level and upper-level witches.
basic powers belonging to all witches are mediumship, scrying, potion-making, and spellcasting. Upper-level witches also possess the passive power of high resistance; lower-level witches do not.
Most witches have only one or two active powers. Melinda Warren having three powers was unusual, as she was the progenitor of her family line; the only other witch on-screen having more than two active powers is Richard Montana (conjuration, energy balls, telekinesis, fading)
Projection is an incredibly rare active power; the only witches seen possessing it on-screen are Wyatt Halliwell and Billie Jenkins, both of whom are upper-level witches with a major destiny and prophecy about them (the Twice-Blessed and the Ultimate Power, respectively)
witches can also be Firestarters (Christy Jenkins, Juliana O’Farrell) and empaths (Phoebe Halliwell)
Witches belonging to the Warren line possess one of the powers Melinda Warren carried down (premonitions, telekinesis, molecular immobilization) or a variant of the powers (cryokinesis, pyrokinesis, divination, molecular deceleration).
Male witches are witches. Witches (male or female) who kill another witch to steal their powers and turn their back on the Wiccan Rede in doing so become warlocks. A witch can also become a warlock by being magically bound to a warlock in a dark binding ceremony. (Warlocks can also be born to one or two warlock parents instead of being made.)
After receiving their powers, a newly-fledged witch must make the choice within 48 hours if they are going to use their powers for good or for evil. This is known as the window of opportunity.
Good witches are guided by a Whitelighter, sort of a guardian angel/guide/healer for good witches. Once a good witch turns evil, they have renounced their right to a Whitelighter.
A witch’s blood has magical properties and can pass the individual witch’s powers onto a mortal if the mortal is injected with the witch’s blood. Doing so will eventually cause the mortal to go insane and die, as humans are not meant to have magical powers. (TV: Astral Monkey)
Witches are the base for some demonic species, such as banshees (TV: Look Who’s Barking) and succubi (TV: She’s a Man, Baby, A Man).
Vampires and extremely powerful upper-level demons are immune to witch powers, with multiple demons only able to be vanquished through the Power of Three possessed by the Charmed Ones.
The Warren line is the most powerful line of witches, culminating in the arrival of the Charmed Ones: three sister witches, and the most powerful good witches of all time.
Witches can interbreed with humans, Whitelighters, Cupids, demons, and Darklighters. Whitelighter-witch relationships are forbidden, with the only exception being the eventual marriage of Charmed One Piper Halliwell and Whitelighter Leo Wyatt (their resulting children are all Whitelighter-witch hybrids).

My #1 post of 2022
re: Elders / Whitelighter rank/species confusion
Certain subsections of the Charmed (1998) fandom have the fanon that because Leo Wyatt was an Elder Whitelighter when his second son with Piper Halliwell was conceived, Chris is half-Elder as a result and therefore as or more powerful than his prophesized Twice-Blessed brother Wyatt. This fanon, however, is incorrect in regard to canon.
“Elder” is a specific rank of Whitelighter, one that can be earned (as we see with Leo becoming an Elder Whitelighter in the season 5 finale) or given to a chosen recipient (already destined to become an Elder Whitelighter) when the current Elder retires, as seen with retiring Elder Whitelighter Remus passing on his powers to the young male witch Kevin. All Elders are Whitelighters, but not all Whitelighters are Elders. The Elders are the elite of Whitelighter society, the rulers, and as such they have powers to go along with their higher rank that non-Elder Whitelighters do not have.
Common Whitelighter powers are the following: orbing, sensing, healing, omnilingualism, dream-walking, photokinesis, telekinesis, levitation, and invisibility. As a result of their higher ranking, Elders receive powers that ordinary Whitelighters do not have, namely electrokinesis, portal creation, force field, telekinetic orbing, and power granting/stripping.
The closest comparison would be to Time Lords/Gallifreyans and the species/rank confusion there in Doctor Who. All Time Lords are Gallifreyans, but not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords. The Time Lords are the elite of Gallifreyan society, the only ones blessed with Rassilon’s gift of regeneration and the ability to time-travel in a TARDIS thanks to the Rassilon Imprimatur. (In the early days, regeneration was also granted to House priests as well.)
Now that that is established, let’s move onto the fanon surrounding Chris and him supposedly being half-Elder Whitelighter.
Since we’ve established that Elder is a higher rank of Whitelighter and Leo did not change species when he became an Elder, Chris is an ordinary Whitelighter-witch from the Warren line. Elder is a rank that Chris does not have, so his Whitelighter side is no more powerful than Wyatt’s. Actually, we see that Chris struggles with certain aspects of his Whitelighter side: he is unable to heal, and he doesn’t have the same language ability that Leo does.
There are other things to consider when taking into account Chris’s lower power level in comparison to Wyatt: Birth order and the prophecy of the Twice-Blessed. We see with Prue that the firstborn witch in a sibling set is always more powerful than their sibling(s). Wyatt was the firstborn out of Piper’s children, and he is the subject of the Twice-Blessed prophecy. Magic was out of commission on the day Wyatt was born, and he is the heir to Excalibur.
In comparison, Chris is not the firstborn and there is no special prophecy about him that says he’s destined to be super-powerful. Nor is he the heir to Excalibur. He was also not born in the Manor, so he doesn’t have the connection to the Nexus that Phoebe and Wyatt did. He is much less powerful than Wyatt, but he makes up for that in how he uses his powers: he’s honed his telekinesis to scary degrees, able to telekinetically crush a person’s heart within their body, scatter a Whitelighter’s orbs, and fling someone telekinetically across a room hard enough to make the individual briefly lose consciousness on impact.
Chris is nowhere near as powerful as Wyatt in both his witch and Whitelighter sides, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s the underdog, and making him as or more powerful as Wyatt due to him being “half-Elder” or somesuch completely undoes the entire point of why the fandom loves him so much in the first place.

Phoebe Halliwell or Maggie Vera?
If we are just comparing first two seasons Phoebe to first two seasons Maggie, then I would have to pick Phoebe. If we are taking all eight seasons into account, then I would have to pick Maggie. A lot of Phoebe's choices during the middle seasons left a lot to be desired. She kinda treated her family like crap cause the writers wanted to force this whole Phoebe x Cole storyline.

GIVE ME A SHOW / MOVIE / FANDOM TO SCREAM ABOUT
my favorite female character: All the sisters to be quite honest
my favorite male character: Leo, Cupid, and Drake de Mon
my favorite book/season/etc: I enjoyed all of the seasons, like there was never a dull moment with that show. However if I had to choose, the whole Phoebe and Cole thing lasted way too long.
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): The Seven Year Witch despite it being a sad episode ‘cause of Drake dying. But I really loved it because yes, even though I hated Cole and all the shit he put Phoebe through, he at least did that nice / good thing for her. Drake and Phoebe should have been a thing but it was sweet while it lasted and I’ll forever love that episode.
my favorite cast member: I really don’t have one
my favorite ship: Leo x Piper forever and ever
a character I’d die defending: None ‘cause none of them really did anything drastic in the sense of needing to be defended or it didn’t last long.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: Cole. He knew what he was doing when he started it and shouldn’t have been surprised that Phoebe was going to kick his ass to the curb and never want him again.
a character I grew to love: Pru after many rewatches and remember that actor does not equal character despite there being a lot of noticeable things between Shannon and Alyssa bleeding into Pru and Phoebe.
my anti otp: Phoebe x Cole

talking about ships...
i registered on tumblr quite some time ago in order to have fun and interact with other fans. hopefully i’ll have pleasant time here (probably should confess that sometimes i regret finding tumblr because as much as i like it, people here seriously need to obtain common sense firstly and secondly they should google what decency and toxicity are).
i plan to possibly create content for pairings which are forever in my heart. i realised that some of them are not only ‘not popular’ but ‘barely there’. if everything goes my way i’ll try to slightly change the situation.
anyway, i decided to list my favourite pairings and relationships and bits and pieces of information you should know about me/
I’m huge fan of Mylene Farmer (my childhood icon), Jensen Ackles and Dylan O’Brien, Ian Bohen, Kaya Scodelario, Adelaide Kane, Sophie Turner, Emma Stone, Lily Collins, Emma Watson, Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Lena Headey, Holland Roden, Crystal Reed, Colin Firth, Kate Beckinsale, Kate Blanchett, Norman Reedus, David Tennant, Billie Piper, Christopher Eccleston, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, Mackenzie Foy, Hayden Christensen, Katie Mcgrath, Rachel Weisz, Emmy Rossum, Hugh Jacman.

(spoiler!!!!) so long i/ve been waiting for the end of the series and i was mindblown by sayo’s story. i always felt that the most important stuff happened behind the scenes. i was so hurt while reading. this is probably the incarnation of the incestual love story of all times (for me ofc, just my opinion). it was so heartbreaking that the only people sayo found herself to be in love with were her actual relatives and she was also a child of incest thus her struggles with her own feelings of denial, disgust and misery. in the end, i think she got her happy ending. everyone did. in the golden lands.
let it be known that i’m not a fan of naruto but im salty enough to ship naruhina out of spite
the promised neverland

20 Audiobooks About Race and Racism to Download and Learn From
Anti-racism reading lists have been doing the rounds over the last couple of weeks. But rather than just a performative display of allyship, we hope this movement brings about real change, which will only be possible if people make the genuine effort to seek out Black voices, read more about systemic and structural racism, and do the work to unpack the implicit bias and racial disparities that have led us to this moment.
We recently shared a roundup of 72 books, movies, podcasts and resources to educate yourself on anti-Black racism, but if audiobooks are more your thing, these 20 titles—some narrated by the authors themselves—are a good place to start.
You can find audiobooks at Audible, Google Play, Scribd, Apple Books, Overdrive, Libro and various other iOS and Android apps.
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates Hailed by Toni Morrison as “required reading,” this book addresses questions about American history, the idea of “race,” and the Black experience in the form of an intimate and urgent letter written by the author to his adolescent son. The audiobook is narrated by the author, Ta-Nehisi Coates, adding to the personal weight of the book. Length: 3 hours and 35 minutes
