Attempts to categorize the canon events in the best of my abilities.

1978

November 11th: Mikage turns 17 years old.

Mamiya is born in the same years as Mikage, which is 1960.

1979

January 23rd: Ruka’s birth

April 

April 1st: Souji Mikage meets the Chida siblings

April 30th

Mamiya Chida dies from illness

Mikage burns the Research Building, then commits suicide by going back in there.

Tokiko is 19-20 yrs old in 1979.

April 2nd: Kanae’s birth

May 25th: Masaomi & Koto left the school when they were caught together by Chairman Ohtori’s wife.

Touga and Saionji met Utena by finding her in a coffin. Though they weren’t able to convince her to leave the casket on that rainy night. The next day, those two noticed a certain look in the girl’s eyes. Seeing something has changed in Utena that neither of them couldn’t do for her.

Utena’s parent’s died in an accident, leaving her orphaned. On that rainy night, she lost the will to live. Until she subconsciously met Akio/Dios and Anthy. From that fateful encounter, Utena found her strength to live. The next day, Utena attends the funeral with her legal guardian. Her aunt named Yurika, who chose to take her in.

Aunt Yurika stated, “Utena’s parents died when she was six. I was still young myself… and I couldn’t explain it to her.” Meaning that Yurika must have been 21 years old at the time. However, an age requirement on becoming a legal guardian to someone’s child is 18 and above.

1996

January 23rd: Ruka turns 17 years old.

February 2nd: Shiori’s turns 13 years old.

On that year, Shiori fell into a river. Juri dives in and saved her, then places Shiori at the riverside. However, Juri loss the strength to swim towards the surface. Until Ruka swam to Juri in attempts to rescue her. The next day, bad news occurred at Ohtori Private Academy Hospital. Juri wakes up from the hospital bed, finding out that Ruka died saving her. She can hear it from Shiori’s cries, asking why he would that for Juri.

1997

December 29th: Utena turns 14 years old.

1998

This would most likely be assumptions and a bit of headcanon. Unless anyone reading this have the actual manga version of Revolutionary Girl Utena, then you won’t have any idea what I’m talking about.

The Cowbell of Happiness and Kanae Ohtori.

The first connection between Cowbell and Kanae are the lilies:

The appearance of white lilies in Cowbell shows that this episode is relevant to Kanae, who is heavily associated with them.

The second is how Kanae and Nanami overvalue their scarf and cowbell respectively.

A cowbell is for cows and is inappropriate for a human girl to wear; a scarf is for wearing, but Anthy uses it clean her glasses, which upsets Kanae to the point she brings it up in the Black Rose elevator (x):

Kanae: When I gave her my cherished scarf and told her to use it, Kanae: she said "Thank you," and began wiping her glasses with it! Kanae: I was so surprised, and when I told her it wasn't a lens cloth, Kanae: she simply stared at me silently and smiled.

Anthy antagonized Kanae by using her scarf in a trivializing (but not unheard of) way; Anthy antagonized Nanami by sending her a cowbell that turns her into a cow.

Nanami overvalues the cowbell and sees it as a status symbol. Kanae overvalues her scarf, and gives it to Anthy as a way of strengthening their relationship. Perhaps the reason behind her distress is that the scarf was a gift from Akio, akin to Akio's gift (by proxy) to Utena.

My next point is relates to how Cowbell is to Nanami as For Friendship Perhaps is to Utena. They are both docile, complacent, not outspoken, have "learned their places". They are not their true selves. Kanae says as much as in her speech before her duel:

Anthy: That is not her normal self. Kanae: This is my true self, Kanae: the other me which slumbered within… Kanae: As long as I have this black rose, I don't have to play the false me anymore.

Kanae is no longer "normal", meaning she is no longer playing the part that society expects of her. Utena and Nanami were both subjugated into a more "proper" role. Kanae was subjugated, and the black rose "liberated" her.

Thirdly, there's the matter of the last meal.

Touga tells Nanami that the hay is her last meal before her slaughter in her nightmare; Anthy and Akio feed a dazed Kanae a poisoned apple, and is heavily implied that she dies.

Cows are easily bound and slaughtered, never knowing the reason why - Kanae is disposed of by Akio to make room for Utena (a post for a different time). Kanae is a Nanami that never rid herself of the cowbell.

Nanami put the cowbell on willingly, assuming it would turn her into the envy of all - in truth, Anthy sent her the cowbell in order to antagonize her, as a symbol of her destructive devotion towards Touga.

Kanae's father "recommended" Akio for her. She claims she would do anything for him, but Akio will only use her and throw her away.

Utena F/F Ships

Anthy/Utena and Juri/Shiori are two of my absolute favorite ships and, as expected from their relationships and all the shipping fodder the series gives us, they're also the two biggest f/f ships in the Utena fandom.

But the anime has a lot of female characters and there’s great f/f potential for so many of them, so how about we take a look at some of the other shipping possibilities? And maybe that will encourage a few fans to try out new things!

Obviously, I'm mostly sharing my own opinions and favored ships, feel free to add to it!

Utena/Wakaba

There's great affection between them and while I wouldn't necessarily picture a grand happily ever after romance for them, there's plenty that can be done in various directions. I think working in the comedic weirdness of Ohtori into fun(ny) takes at romantic tropes fits them well. But a bit of darkness, exploring the bad blood between them that is revealed through the Black Rose Arc would be fantastic too.

Juri/Utena

My ideas on how to make this one work are a bit hazy but it's certainly an attractive pairing. Aesthetically, it's simply great! I think there's definitely something to get inspired with, regarding how repressed they can be, or the way Juri talks about her "cruel innocence", or how their understanding of one another evolves through the series.

Nanami/Utena

Another pair for which I love the comedy potential, but also the evolving friendship. The enemies (on Nanami's side mostly) to friends to lovers potential is right here! The idea of Nanami having an unrequited crush on Utena works really well and is lovely for Nanami pining or getting comedically angry over it. But I'm very interested in the possibility of it going requited too! Post-series settings would also bring out many possibilities... and hopefully, the outside world isn't lacking in zany shenanigans for them to get into!

Anthy/Kanae

This one is diving into pure horror head straight and I love it for that. It brings out Anthy's "witchiness", plays on very twisted forms of jealousy and makes us dive into the darkness that lies at the bottom of Ohtori. It's terrifying, in the best ways that the series can be. I'm especially fascinated by the Black Rose setting and what it can get out of Kanae, especially with Anthy's secret involvement. In fact, I'd love fanworks around that arc for Anthy with any of the Black Rose girls (but then, I ship Anthy with all of the female characters in the first place!)

Anthy/Kozue

Speaking of which. Kozue is also a wonder to ship with any of the female characters. She puts herself willingly and in a very different way than Anthy in the position of the "villain", of the bad girl. She refuses to play the game of the Princess while Anthy has to pretend to be one. Kozue considers herself a wild animal and Anthy is kind to animals. There are fascinating elements to explore in making them clash, having them trying to manipulate and/or seduce each other!

Anthy/Juri

This one is ripe for alternate universe canon divergences of Juri winning the Rose Bride and where that takes them. All the pining for someone else, all the bad decisions and seducing/being seduced and regrets that would come for it! I wonder if Anthy may empathize with Juri’s love for someone twisted and the way they both can’t stop caring despite how much it hurts them. Would they have chances to break free of Ohtori, as a Rose Bride/Engaged pair? How would it work out? What would happen if they fail?

Kozue/Nanami

Two of the twisted little sisters. They only have one scene together but isn't the thought of them interesting? Both their similarities and differencescould make them clash and it'd certainly be a fascinating spectacle. But maybe they would also reach an understanding after a point. I’d love to see how those characters would grow up in relation to each other. Nanami is also shown to get flustered over Miki and Kozue looks much like him and is oh so devious.

Anthy/Nanami

The other possibility in the "a different female duelist gets the Rose Bride" canon divergence scenario. With a very different kind of messed-up potential! How would Nanami deal being paired with the girl she hates the most? In which ways would Anthy manipulate/torment her while playing the devoted bride? What a strange Rose Bride/Engaged pair they’d be, but maybe that would be key to another kind of revolution. Whether it's portrayed in an humorous or dark manner, it's deliciously messed-up.

Juri/Nanami

Juri's a bit particular in Nanami's relationships with other female characters. Nanami seems impressed/scared of her, and knows better than to try to mess with her (unlike with Anthy), which doesn't stop her from potentially trying to one-up her but she'll go at it differently. You could say there’s a bit of respect coming from her, which is rare. There's many ways Nanami trying to impress or outdo Juri could go and the potential evolutions of their relationship as shegrows up would be interesting too. And like all Nanami ships, there's good potential for fun Ohtori weirdness and comedy.

I could go on about many other ships involving minor characters! Like Nanami's minions or the Shadowplay Girls (come on, A-ko and B-ko are totally a thing!)

And even with characters that have barely or never met. Isn't Kozue/Shiori's potential wonderfully twisted? Nanami/Wakaba sounds delightful! Does Kanae's mother terribleness extend to sleeping with other members of the staff like that stuck-up teacher or would she aim to get both of the scheming siblings? What if C-ko was in love with Utena and trying to get her attention?

Are we getting into the territory of what’s considered crackships? Sure but that’s part of the fun, too!

Listen, I am not gonna back Utena’s play about fucking around with you when she knew you had a fiancee, I think that’s bad behavior, and yeah, she needs to get her shit straight, but that doesn’t mean you’re fine. 

God, I hate that shit, where people are like “Hey, this is not-great behavior” and their response is “Yeah well you do X, so you can’t tell me shit” OF COURSE WE ARE ALL FUCKUPS OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER. 

I mean obviously we’re dealing with some pretty high-level shit here, we’re not dealing with “You have a headcanon that invalidates the personal way that MY headcanon makes me feel represented” “Yeah well your insistence on this canon is problematic because it makes ME feel whatever whatever” bickering-ass tumblr bullshit that we act like fucking matters (I am in ZERO PERCENT WAY saying I’m above this btw)  We’re dealing with the seriousness of, you know, incest and cheating and all that fun stuff.

Sin is such a fascinating concept in that every religion that has the idea has a different take on it, but what I think Akio is trying to snake out of here is that someone else’s sin doesn’t validate your own. Utena can be wrong here, but still right about your mistreatment of Anthy and Kanae and honestly pretty much everyone at Ohtori.

In fact, even if we just go on this one issue alone, Utena is the one in the situation who didn’t make a promise to anyone. That’d be you, son, who made a promise to Kanae. And whatever I think about Utena’s behavior and how she should be smarter than this, and I do, even if Utena’s wrong, Akio, that don’t make you right. And you KNOW that, it’s just a tactic to put Utena off her game so she doesn’t stab you through the fucking face the way we all desperately want. 

And the thing is, I think it’s going to work. Utena is really struggling with the concept of herself, and I don’t think there’s much that’s holding her fast to the world, just raw, undiluted brickiness. And while I know she has to fight Akio, for the sake of the narrative, I’m worried she’ll lose before she even starts. 

Please note I haven’t seen anything past this and am watching spoiler free! Please don’t confirm, deny, or explain anything to me! Even if I should be able to figure it out based on past episodes! Even if it’s cultural! Even if there is no answer! It ruins it for everyone when I get spoiled!
