Roberto Clemente Day and Another Series Win
NYY @ PIT
Game 1
Former Pittsburgh Pirates righty Gerrit Cole got the ball for the New York Yankees versus RHP Johan Oviedo and the Bucs on Roberto Clemente Day.
In the bottom of the first inning, CF Jack Suwinski hit a sacrifice fly off Cole to CF Estevan Florial, scoring 2B Ji Hwan Bae. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead against the Yankees.
In the top of the second inning, Cole’s personal catcher Ben Rortvedt hit an RBI single off Oviedo, scoring SS Anthony Volpe. The score was knotted at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second inning, LF Bryan Reynolds hit an RBI single off Cole, scoring SS Liover Peguero. The Pirates now led 2-1.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning, 1B DJ LeMahieu hit an RBI single off reliever Thomas Hatch, scoring LF Oswaldo Cabrera. The score was tied 2-2.
A bit later in the same inning, RF Aaron Judge hit an RBI single off Hatch, scoring Rortvedt. The Yankees took the lead 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bae hit an RBI single off reliever Anthony Misiewicz, scoring former Yankee and DH Miguel Andujar. The score was tied 3-3.
This RBI single was a line drive that deflected off of the left side of Misiewicz’s head, unfortunately.
youtube
He would be taken off of the field via cart with a member of the Yankees’ medical staff and would be checked in at a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Misiewicz was in good spirits as he left PNC Park with the line-drive baseball as a memento of the game. Fortunately, he was cleared to leave the hospital on the same night.
Unfortunately, Misiewicz experienced concussion symptoms the next day, causing the Yankees to place him on the seven-day concussion injured list (IL).
Refocusing on this first game of the series, reliever Zach McAllister took Misiewicz’s place on the mound.
Still, in the sixth inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes – the son of former Yankee Charlie Hayes – hit an RBI single off McAllister, scoring RF Joshua Palacios and Bae. The Pirates led 5-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, Florial got a bases-loaded walk via reliever Colin Holderman, scoring LeMahieu. The Yankees now trailed 5-4.
Later in that inning, Volpe grounded into a force-out to Peguero at SS who threw to Bae at 2B, getting out Florial. Judge and 2B Gleyber Torres on Bae’s throwing error to first base. The Yankees led 6-5.
Before the inning and game ended, Cabrera hit an RBI single, scoring Volpe. The Yankees led 7-5 and won by this score.
Game 2
RHP Luke Weaver – who was claimed off waivers on Tuesday – got the nod for the Yankees against RHP Luis L. Ortiz and the Pirates.
In the top of the first inning, rookie C Austin Wells hit an RBI double off Ortiz, scoring LeMahieu. The Yankees took the lead 1-0.
In the same inning, Florial hit an RBI single off Ortiz, scoring Torres and Wells. The Yankees extended their lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the first inning, Reynolds hit a two-run homerun off Weaver, scoring Bae and Reynolds himself. The Pirates trailed 3-2.
In the top of the third inning, DH Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homerun off Ortiz. The Yankees led 4-2 with that insurance run.
youtube
In the bottom of the third inning, C Endy Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly off Weaver to Judge in RF. Hayes scored and the Pirates now trailed 4-3.
In the top of the sixth inning, reliever Hunter Stratton threw a wild pitch, causing Judge to score from third base. The Yankees extended their lead to 5-3.
In the top of the eighth inning, Cabrera hit a solo homerun off Hatch, adding an additional insurance run for the Yankees.
The Yankees led 6-3 and would win by this score.
Game 3
LHP Carlos Rodón would pitch for the Yankees against RHP/opener Colin Selby for the Pirates.
The scoring began in the bottom of the third inning when Peguero hit an RBI single off Rodón and 1B Jared Triolo crossing home plate. The Pirates took the lead 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Andujar – who was in RF in this game – hit a solo homerun off Rodón. The Pirates extended their lead to 2-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, LeMahieu hit an RBI double off reliever Andre Jackson, scoring Florial. The Yankees trailed 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Volpe hit a solo homerun – his 21st of his rookie season – off Jackson. The score was tied 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and Rodón still pitching, C Jason Delay hit an RBI double that deflected off the third base bag near 3B Oswald Peraza.
Peraza was ready to play the ball and throw it to first base before it hit third base. Either way, it was bad luck for the Yankees and the Pirates took a 3-2 lead.
This would end up being the final score in the Pirates’ win, which should have been a Yankees win and sweep of this series.
With the Yankees now losing five games this September into the October 1 stretch, they cannot afford to lose any more games.
Otherwise, the Yankees would be mathematically and officially eliminated as postseason wild-card contenders in the American League. Wishful thinking, right?

"Absolutely brutal" "Life comes at you fast"
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-handed pitcher Anthony Misiewicz from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations. To make room for Misiewicz, the team had to designated pitcher James Naile for Assignment. Teams DFA players all the time. That’s not something out of the ordinary. What is out of the ordinary is that the team DFA’d Naile on his birthday. What a way to celebrate your 30th…

Twins Flirt With No-Hitter In Win!
Royals 3 Twins 6 W-Ryan (11-8) L-Bubic (2-12)
The Minnesota Twins playoff hopes took a major dive this weekend when the Indians swept them at home. The show must go on as the Royals came to town for a three-game set starting tonight. The Twins bats struck first this evening in the third inning with a Gilberto Celestino lead-off single to center. Luis Arraez singled to right and Carlos Correa doubled home a run. Later in the inning, Jose Miranda lined a run-scoring single to center, but Carlos Correa was thrown out at the plate. This put the Twins up by a pair of runs after three innings of play. The Twins got back to work in the fifth with a Luis Arraez single to right. Carlos Correa followed and unloaded on a Kris Bubic fastball. He sent it out to left for a two-run homer and the Twins doubled their lead to four. Later in the inning, Jose Miranda smoked a Bubic high fastball out to left for a solo homer. Minnesota had a 5-0 lead after five frames. Gio Urshela added a run in the sixth when he took Anthony Misiewicz deep. The solo homer extended the Twins lead to six and Joe Ryan was throwing a no-hitter through seven innings. Jovani Moran had a hitless eighth and drama ensued to start the ninth. Hunter Dozier and MJ Melendez walked with one out in the ninth. Bobby Witt Jr. doubled home a run to break up the no-hit bid and shutout. Sebastian Rivera plated another run on an infield single and the Royals were within four runs. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a sac fly to center and Nick Pratto struck out swinging to end the game. The Twins picked up a much-needed win with some great pitching tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan was dominant tonight with seven no-hit innings. He allowed two walks and nine strikeouts on 106 pitches. Rocco Baldelli decided to take him out of the game though with a no-hitter. Jovani Moran had a clean eighth, but gave up three runs on two hits in the ninth with four strikeouts and two walks. Gio Urshela and Luis Arraez led the way with three hits each. Carlos Correa and Jose Miranda had two hits. The Twins hit 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. The Twins are back to .500 at (70-70), but the Indians won. The White Sox are winning as we speak. Tomorrow, Zack Greinke faces Sonny Gray in Game 2.

Seattle Mariners 2021 Season - Post 5 - Baseball After 1 Month
After 4 straight losses, 3 of them by a 2 run deficit, things are starting to settle back in to the heartbreaking familiar.
Last night’s game seemed to offer the hope that the inevitable gravity dictated slide might be postponed, but a bullpen meltdown and a rare Evan White error doomed the M’s for the game, and almost certainly the season.
1 month down, why play the other 5? Sure, the Mariners were technically still above .500 at 13-12, but give them the 2 games left in April and that could be easily fixed.
And today, even before the first pitch of their brunch game against the Astros, came the news that Marco Gonzales would miss at least 2 starts while on the injured list. Injury on top of insult.
And Mitch Haniger was out of today’s lineup, 2nd game in a row. He should be good for tomorrow though.
And Kyle Lewis, needing a day’s rest would be watching the game from the dugout.
You could feel the gravitational pull of the cellar.
A Kyle Seager double gave the Mariners a runner in the 1st inning, but they were unable to bring him home.
Yusei Kikuchi gave up a walk, but nothing else.
0-0 tie at the end of the 1st inning.
Taylor Trammell lead off the 3rd inning with a home run, putting the Mariners up 1-0.
Yusei Kikuchi strikes out Myles Straw twice, but the umpire feels bad for Straw and lets Straw take 1st base. True story.
The Astros strand him at 1st.
Through 3 innings, Yusei Kikuchi has not given up a hit, and has given up 1 walk. And whatever the Straw at bat was.
Kikuchi strikes out the side of Stros in the 6th inning.
Kikuchi gives up a double to Carlos Correa with 1 out in the 7th inning, the first hit he’s given up. With trouble brewing, he helps himself out with a great sliding play to field a ground ball and get the out on the next play. A ground out to short ends the Astros threat.
Kikuchi’s day ends as well. 7 innings pitched, 7 strikeouts to match, 1 hit, 1 walk, and the Straw at bat.
He’s still in line for the win, but that line is a tightrope as the Mariners haven’t added to their 1-0 lead.
The M’s don’t add anything in the 8th, but neither does Anthony Misiewicz give up anything in the bottom of the inning.
The Mariners refuse to pad their slim lead in the 9th.
Kendall Graveman comes in to pitch the bottom of the 9th.
He gets Kyle Tucker to look at strike 3.
1 out.
Jose Altuve grounds out to short.
2 outs.
Alex Bregman singles to left.
YIKES!!
Carlos Correa hits a fly to no man’s land, shallow center.
YIKES!!
Taylor Trammell on the run.
This could be the difference between the M’s riding a hot start to the end of April, or heading into May with a losing record.
The season is on the line!!!
AND THEN THE SMILE AND VICTORY!!!
MARINER’S WIN!!!
FANDOM RESIGNATION IS DELAYED AT LEAST 1 MORE DAY!!!

DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP! The Yankees take both games of their day-night doubleheader with the Red Sox and have now tied Boston for 4th place (lol) in the AL East.
Carlos Rodon, despite allowing a leadoff home run, bounced back with a solid start tonight. Nine strikeouts over five innings of one-run ball is an outing you’ll certainly take from the left-hander right now. Really need to see him finish this season strong as he is obviously still be a huge piece to the 2024 rotation.
Estevan Florial had his first hit of the year — an RBI single to tie the game in the 5th. Jake Bauers, Gleyber Torres, and Austin Wells all added RBI’s as well.
Following Rodon was three innings of effective relief from the recently added veterans in Zach McAllister, Anthony Misiewicz, and Matt Bowman. Nick Ramirez would lock it down in the 9th for his first save this year.
Game three of this four-game set is tomorrow night at 6:05 ET. Clarke Schmidt on the bump. LETS GO YANKEES!

A Narrative of My Research
I'm creating a series of narratives to describe my time at Ohio Northern for my tenure review. This post will focus on my research from the past few years.
One of the pieces of wisdom that I acquired during grad school was that supposedly a good scholar could explain their research agenda, with clarity and precision, in around 200 words. I could have followed this sage wisdom if my research followed a specific, specialized route. I’ve learned over the course of my nearly two decades in the academy that my research agenda was never going to follow a…

Blackmon stays hot, Rockies pitch 1-hitter, top Mariners 5-0
SEATTLE (AP) Even Charlie Blackmon staying hot at the plate was upstaged on this night by a foursome of Colorado Rockies pitchers, led by the debut of rookie Ryan Castellani.
Blackmon added three more hits to his major league-leading total and drove in three runs, and four Rockies pitchers combined to one-hit the Seattle Mariners in a 5-0 win on Saturday night.
Colorado won for the seventh time in eight games to keep rolling atop the NL West, and Blackmon wasn't the only star. The Rockies were thrilled with Castellani's debut.
''The thing that was impressive to me was just his mound presence,'' Colorado manager Bud Black said. ''His poise. He looked under control delivery wise, he didn't over throw the ball. ... There was just so many positives tonight for Ryan that you really like to see that in the guys first game. It was really cool stuff.''
Castellani began with four perfect innings. He was pulled after a hit batter and walk to open the fifth. Castellani struck out three and threw 60 pitches.
Reliever Jeff Hoffman kept the no-hitter going until J.P. Crawford lined a single to center field with two outs in the sixth inning for the Mariners' lone hit.
Hoffman (2-0) threw three innings before Yency Almonte pitched a perfect eighth and Phillip Diehl closed out the ninth.
Castellani said Diehl was his throwing partner through baseball's shutdown and found it fitting the lefty closed out his first start.
''Huge relief getting it over with. I still can't believe it's real right now,'' Castellani said. ''First off, just super happy we won. I mean, I couldn't have pictured it any better in my head.''
Blackmon doubled twice, the second hitting the top of the wall in right field and barely missing a grand slam. Blackmon settled for a bases-clearing double to give Colorado a 3-0 lead. Blackmon has 25 hits in 14 games and raised his batting average to .446.
''He might hit .400 or .500 this year,'' Seattle manager Scott Servais said. ''He's a really tough out. Hangs in on lefties, very aggressive when he gets his pitch in his zone and he's a tough guy to put away.''
Daniel Murphy and Trevor Story also had RBI singles for Colorado.
Castellani relied heavily on his fastball and spotted a good changeup and breaking pitches when needed.
Castellani's perfect streak ended when he hit Kyle Seager leading off the fifth. Daniel Vogelbach walked and Colorado manager Bud Black didn't hesitate pulling Castellani. Hoffman got out of the only jam the Rockies faced with a double play and grounder back to the mound.
''In the clubhouse just getting the beer shower was just awesome, all of it,'' Castellani said. ''I'm never going to forget it.''
Seattle's Nick Margevicius threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his first start since sliding into the Mariners rotation. Margevicius was pulled after 61 pitches, giving way to Seattle's shaky bullpen.
Anthony Misiewicz (0-1) gave up two runs in one inning.
MAKE IT A DOZEN
Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 12 games, lining a double to cap a 10-pitch at-bat in the first inning. Blackmon was hitless in his first nine at-bats of the season. Since then, he's 25 of 47, a .532 average.
CROSSED UP
Seattle C Austin Nola was out of the lineup on Saturday after getting crossed up on a pitch from Yohan Ramirez late in Friday's loss that hit him on the wrist. X-rays were negative, but manager Scott Servais said the wrist was swollen. The hope is Nola can return to the lineup on Sunday. Nola had a homer and double prior to getting hit.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Mariners: RHP Kendall Graveman will see a specialist early next week to determine what procedure to have after suffering a neck strain in his last start. Servais said whatever the treatment it will be a significant amount of time that Graveman is out of the rotation.
UP NEXT
Rockies: RHP German Marquez (2-1, 1.54) makes his fourth start and third against an AL west team. Marquez has allowed three earned runs in 13 1/3 innings over his past two starts, both victories.
Mariners: LHP Justus Sheffield (0-2, 9.39) makes his third start. Sheffield has not made it through five innings in either of his starts. Sheffield allowed just four hits but gave up four runs in his last start against Oakland.

Which Cubs prospects get 40-man spots?
It's decision time for all 30 Major League organizations.
By Tuesday, all teams will have decided who deserves a spot on their 40-man rosters. Those Minor Leaguers who are eligible but not put on the roster will be exposed to be taken by the other 29 teams in the Rule 5 Draft, which will take place at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, on Thursday. Dec. 13.
Players first signed at age 18 must be added to 40-man rosters within five seasons or they become eligible to be drafted by other organizations through the Rule 5 process. Players signed at 19 years or older have to be protected within four seasons. Clubs pay $100,000 to select a player in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. If that player doesn't stay on the 25-man roster for the full season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.
For this year, that means an international or high school Draft pick signed in 2014 -- assuming he was 18 or younger as of June 5 of that year -- has to be protected. A college player taken in the 2015 Draft is in the same position.
There are just eight players on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list who need to be protected or become exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.
16. Mitch Keller, RHP, PIT 25. Dylan Cease, RHP, CWS 33. Jesus Sanchez, OF, TB 35. Chris Paddack,RHP, SD 39. Keibert Ruiz, C, LAD 64. Adonis Medina, RHP, PHI 67. Franklin Perez, RHP, DET 69. Michael Chavis, 3B, BOS
Last year, there were eight Top 100 players who needed to be protected. In 2016, there were 12, and in '15, there were 11. And every one of those 31 players were added to 40-man rosters.
There are obviously many more Minor Leaguers under consideration. There are 149 prospects on organizational Top 30 lists hoping to get added to a 40-man roster. That's down from last year, when there were 153, 85 of whom (55.6%) were protected. In 2016, there were 144 total, and 58% of them (84) were protected. In 2015, 75 of 156 (48%) Top 30 prospects landed on rosters.
Here's a list of all 30 teams' Top 30 prospects who needed to be protected to avoid being exposed to the Rule 5 Draft, along with non-Top 30 prospects who were given coveted roster spots:
