Arlo and the Gang: Arcade Headcanons

Because Tess and I went to a local arcade today, and it’s fun imagining my favorite characters doing the things I do

Arlo, naturally, is pretty thrilled with the experience the first time he goes to one

He plays as many arcade games as he can, not really having a favorite ‘genre’ of arcade game since he wants to try them all (though I could see him sorta preferring the ‘simple’ games like skee-ball and rhythm games, since the boy’s got natural rhythm)

Arlo also finds luck-based games to be a lot of fun, having fun with the experience itself and not minding if he wins big or only gets a couple tickets

He also LOVES playing two-player games, since he loves getting to play with his friends + dad

Bertie is good at a lot of the more physical games - skee-ball, air hockey, basketball, etc.

The noise of the arcade can sometimes be a bit much for Bertie though (hence why she hates stuff like pinball or those games with all the alarms. WAY too noisy), so she occasionally needs breaks/will occasionally just watch instead of playing herself

Furlecia and Ansel both enjoy showing off on the DDR machine - Furlecia’s got long legs and knows how to use them, and Ansel just enjoys music/style-focused games (he definitely knows how to bring a crowd to the machine)

Furlecia also loves a lot of the fighting games like Tekken and Mortal Kombat, given that she’s a former underground wrestler and all. She usually plays against Alia.

Alongside fighters, Alia really enjoys shooting games - her extra senses actually come in handy here with shooting all the digital targets. Same thing applies to pinball.

Alia likes driving games too obviously, but she usually loses since the games/machines can’t usually handle her ‘unique’ and wild style of driving (much to her annoyance)

Tony doesn’t really care WHAT game he plays, he just tries to win as many tickets as possible so he can get a top prize from the prize counter/bragging rights.

He teams up with Marcellus (aka the cheater of the group/the guy who spends the whole trip trying to figure out how to ‘cheat the system’) to try and accomplish this.

Marcellus is also the one most likely to get his fin/part of his body stuck in a crane machine in his attempts to get a prize from it

Ansel also sometimes gets caught up in trying to win tickets/a great prize for his lil alligator boy. Like- he knows that Arlo doesn’t need nor want the top prize to be happy, but Ansel still wants to win him something decent for a nice keepsake his son can have

As for Arlo and the others, it’s not uncommon for them to just pool their tickets so they can all get a little something- or, on occasion, so they can get something cool and worthwhile that they can share or put somewhere in Seaside for everyone to enjoy

After they run out of tokens and have all their prizes, the group always goes out for ice cream after each arcade trip

In 2013, a friend and I decided to try our luck and see what all the Cronut hype was about. We arrived at Dominique Ansel in Soho at 7:30 a.m.: A decade later, I couldn’t tell you what flavor Cronut we had, but I do remember the roughly 40 customers in line, a handful of those who even brought folding chairs.

Croissant innovation has continued: These days, though, waiting in lines for the next it-dessert has become my job — particularly since bakeries increasingly have as much status as hot restaurants, in part because more people can afford a luxe pastry than a four-course tasting menu.

Any New Yorker will tell you that lines in general are almost never worth it. In a city with a plethora of dining options, there’s always somewhere else to go. Onetime hip bakeries like Sullivan Street Bakery, Magnolia Bakery, and Arcade (RIP) may have long existed in the city, but in the last three years, something new has been happening, making more people take interest than ever before. Even the James Beards are paying attention: 2023 is the first that it’s adding an outstanding bakery category to its awards list.

Pandemic pop-ups pushed the needle for bakeries. When COVID closed restaurants, pop-ups exploded as a way to fill that niche. Baked goods — a combination of take-out-friendly structures and a salve in a sad time — were ready for the taking.

“I think people were looking for a little bit of pleasure or just a pick-me-up — a little bit of light in all of the darkness,” said Autumn Moultrie, co-owner of microbakery Back Alley Bread. “Microbakery” is a term that’s come to refer to online operations, as opposed to a physical location; Back Alley Bread, which began in 2020 on Instagram, signed on to open its first storefront this week at 53 Rockaway Avenue, between Sumpter and Marion streets, in Bed-Stuy.

Though some reports have suggested that pastry chefs are going extinct at NYC restaurants, in truth they are just evolving. Fandom has outlasted the onset of the pandemic, she says: “Pastry places are becoming the destination, not the afterthought, or just end of the meal.” Moultrie says that for Back Alley, the secret to its success was staying nimble, and not just pigeonholing its goodies into one niche — selling angel donuts, Frito pie, and Jamaican patties all under the same roof.

Thanks for the ask, anon! Also, this is fair warning for those who don't know what abilities the characters have yet, there be spoilers in the second half of this post. And, you know what? Even for those who do, there's still spoilers, specifically concerning the bonus answer at the end of this post. I'd recommend skipping question 31 if you don't want spoilers. You have been warned.

28 - Are they a #gamer?

Alex - Not at all. In fact, I feel like they're one of those people who really want you to know how much they just don't "get" gaming. Gamers, you know which kind of people I mean. Like, there's people who just don't play games and then there's people who really want you to know that they don't play games. Kind of like the type of vegans who are constantly making sure to tell people they are vegan.

Teagan - He probably would be if his life circumstances had allowed for it. He wasn't allowed to play video games growing up, and he doesn't really have the disposable income for gaming right now. But, if he did, I'm sure he'd love video games.

Ansel - Not really. Ansel has played some old-school arcade games and still enjoys doing so from time to time, but it's not really a regular thing for him.

Cherry - Yes. I imagine Cherry vibes the most with platformers and metroidvanias. I could picture her really loving Hollow Knight.

Lucia - A little bit. Lucia didn't really play a lot of video games growing up, but she's had exposure through friends and through her ex. She likes playing fighting games, like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

Rene - Yes. Rene is one of those people who would frequent the high-tech arcades that have all the Japanese rhythm games. Probably a WACCA master. He'd play a lot of rythym games on his laptop, too. Also accustomed to playing party games on account of having several siblings. Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, and other staple Nintendo party games are very popular in the Michel family.

??? - She would claim that she's not, but she really is. She's one of those people who would play souls-like games for the 100%. She doesn't necessarily care for the pvp side of things, she just likes a challange and being a completionist.

Bonus: The Family - Arthur would never admit it, but he was probably an arcade rat back in his day. I'm sure he was a sucker for the space-themed games, like Galaxian, Galaga, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Sinistar, etc. Miranda was never much of a gamer, mostly due to lack of exposure to games, but she wouldn't really vibe with video games anyway. Sungjae had the pretty standard experience of a boy growing up during the rise of video games in the household. He played a lot of games as a kid and still likes them, but he doesn't often find time to play them as an adult.

31 - What superpower would you choose for them and what would they choose for themselves? If they have one would they choose something else?

I feel like I've answered something similar to this, but I can't find it, so forgive me if I have and now answer something different. 😂

Alex - If they could choose something else, they would pick almost literally anything but what they have. As a non-binary person who is still affected by gender dysphoria and other physical insecurities, having a weird shapeshifting ability has not been ideal.

Teagan - Teagan is neutral about his powers and wouldn't pick anything else.

Ansel - He finds his own ability pretty interesting and useful and wouldn't see the need to pick something else.

Cherry - She's among the few characters with abilities that doesn't want her ability. She would change it for just about anything else, but what she changes it out for isn't really important. It's painful and stressful to constantly feel the burden of other peoples' emotions, so she's pretty fed up with her empath abilties.

Lucia - There was a time she would preferred to choose a different power, if she had the option. But Lucia has been working hard, mentally and emotionally, on learning to like everything about herself. She doesn't want to go backwards.

Rene - He'd want some kind of sound/energy manipulation, put all that musical talent to good use. If he had an ability, though, I would give him some variation of superhuman intelligence, specifically the ability to learn things extremely fast. In fact, that was going to be his power originally before I revised his character during drafting and decided to make him non-powered.

??? - If she could pick a different power, she would want some kind of healing ability (that she could use on other people).

Bonus: The Family - If Arthur had a superpower, it would be some kind of superhuman perception—that's what he would pick for himself and what I would pick for him. Miranda would not pick another power if she had the option, but that's mostly because she has a deep misunderstanding about what her power actually is. Sungjae would pick another power if he could, but only to be rid of the one he has, so there isn't a specific power he'd choose.

      an only child  ,  he grew up watching his parents performances on the stage  ,  accepting their kisses and gentle smiles before they set off for tours around the country and left him with his cousins  .  sure  ,  they were absent --- but they tried  --- and graeme knew he wanted to be just like them  .  when his parents delighted in his little home-staged sets he presented ,  they quickly enrolled him in acting classes and coached him through first auditions  ,  even moved back to korea when it was clear some american roles wanted to confine him to one note  .  after gaining exposure  ,  graeme shared the screen with one of the biggest names in the american industry in a dramatic hit that led to some ridiculous fanmail being sent to him as a kid  ,  then excitedly landed a role in a revamped science fiction film he was stoked af abouy !!! unfortunately  ,  the film was met with an absolute brutal blowback from fans  ,  some of that hot  ,  petty anger taken out on graeme  ,  and at thirteen years old  ,  his parents made the decision for him to step back and focus on school  .   (  he still holds onto those spiteful letters------  all that hate from grown ass adults thrown at a child  ) 

      performing arts high school  ,  but graeme stayed away from the public stage for a bit  .  worked on some sets as a tech to get a better idea of the film making process  .  kept a low profile occasionally caught by curious paparazzi at a basketball court or baseball game  .  recognizable  ,  but not to the point where he couldn’t be seminormal  .  there were a few bumps in the road  ::  leaked photos of a beer at a high school party  ,  couple of fake friends sliding in for clout  ,  people pushing questions like when are you returning  ??  how does it feel to ruin one of the most important films of all time ???  shitty  .  but  ,  with the help of his parents  ,  friends and coaches  ,  graeme returned to student films to grow more comfortable in front of a camera  .  his official comeback was in the background of a friend's directorial debut  ,  a lady-love drama critics salivated over but failed to earn is’ nominations  .  still  ,  graeme’s name was back and out there  .  jumping headfirst into the thing that scares him  ,  graeme’s slated for teen flicks  ,  romantic dramas  ,  action films  .  a diverse portfolio  .  people love a comeback  .     ------as if there was something wrong with what he did before  .  

TLDR.  former international child star who took a break after experiencing a massive fan-driven backlash  .  pseudo retired  ,  did the performing arts school thing  .  popped back on the screen about a year ago and working his ass off since  .  early career inspiration : jake lloyd  ,  natalie portman  , yeo jingoo

      suddenly  getting all this praise and earning cash  ,  living on his own in a sprawling city of work and sin  .   hasn’t stop busting his ass  ,  no  ,  but maybe he’s found outlets for all his stress in  . . . less than healthy outlets  .  some of the headlines are way off the mark  ,  some a little too close to home  .  either way  ,  it’s not something his parents or his management company are thrilled about  (  doesn’t he want to be taken seriously as an actor ,  they say  )  and he does  .  of course he does  .  but what else does he have to sacrifice to be taken seriously ?  and how serious does any twenty-something year old wanna get  ?

      late hours on dance floors  ,  strips of things he doesn’t know the name of on his tongue  ,  lips on any pretty   ,  wanting pair he can find  .  he’s young  ,  virile and at the top of his game  .  who can blame him  ?  it starts with a string of tabloid images  ,  a rumpled and sleepy-eyed graeme leaving apartments that aren’t his in clothes he was spotted in the night before  .  zoomed-in  ,  fan-cropped photos on twitter of hickeys and swollen mouths and unbuttoned shirts  .  america’s sweetheart  ?  maybe  ,  but clearly not around the clock  .  him  ,  scaling rails of hotels and dancing on top of cars  .  grabbing mics at clubs and taking over DJ boots at parties   .  twitter explodes when he moonwalks through the airport one time and baristas trend his insane coffee orders  .  

      and even though he’s got his own name --- and a variety of different spellings  ,  hashtags  ,  and whatevers --- blacklisted on social media  ,  every now and then he’ll run along a stream of grueling comments  ,  petty nitpicks about his performances  ,  his looks  ,  his voice  ,  his goddamn smile and it’s-----   it’s rough  ,  even for someone who grew up in that environment  .  there’s days where he’ll hole up in his apartment and refuse to see anyone  ,  refuse to leave  .  the guy in the interviews with the wide smile and sparkle eyes is so  ,  so far away and people almost forget that he’s human  ,  too  .  he pushes himself out of that mindset  ,  sometimes with help  ,  but it’s always a shadow on his back  ,  waiting to catch him at his weakest  .  

TLDR.  tabloids gossip about speculated hookups and strange behavior  .  potential alcohol abuse  .  pushback from management and parents  .  anxiety towards social media  .  current career inspiration : ansel elgort

      even his underwear is black  .  occasionally, he’ll change it up with a screen printed vintage t-shirt and wears whatever kind of fancy thing his stylist squeezes him into  .  otherwise wears by a black or white t-shirt  ,  black pants and combat boots  .  seventy percent of his sneakers have sharpie drawings on them and he’s got a lot of holes in his ears and another in a place you’d be lucky  (  or unlucky  )  to see  .  loves dangy earrings and wearing his hair loose  ,  a bit long with a mild perm  .  silver on his wrists and friendship bracelets from yesteryear but no rings  .  tattooed up  !  recently collaborated to design a line of temporary tattoos  .  extensive collection of sunglasses  .  hit up a lot of music festivals in the past but that’s died down in recent months due to a busy schedule  .  swung his way into VIP passes before  .  he was a total Warped kid in the past  ,  no shame  .  no longer does fan conventions because of a negative experience a few years back  ,  and even fan meets are a little awkward  ,  but he manages to push through  .  can’t drive worth a damn but he’ll kick your ass at any arcade game  .  occasionally  ,  he’ll stream over twitch but that’s becoming less and less common  . was banned from several dave & busters before he made it back on the screen  .  moody as fuck  .

      so  .  bonds  .  there’s a best friend who may not have been there since the beginning  ,  but they’ve been there when it matters  .  the friendship is new  ,  fresh  ,  and maybe graeme shouldn’t be as dependent on it as he is  ,  but he can’t help it  .  clinging to them like crazy --- let’s hope it doesn’t fall to the wayside  .  (  ? / 1  )  there’s several of his idiot friends who  ,  after being stranded on too many red carpets  ,  a hundred hotel rooms  ,  and hours of press junkets  ,  have learned to survive by snapchatting each other random dares throughout the day  .  (  1 / unlimited  )  there’s a few childhood friends who  ,  like him  ,  grew up either in or close to the spotlight and they have this  ,  like  . . .  support group kind of situation  .  i don’t know  .  graeme checks on them from time to time  ,  even as they’ve grown apart  .  (   2 / unlimited  )  he’s got some partying buddies who may not have his best interest at heart --- who may or may not stop him when he’s slurred out and whining about twitter trolls .  some gaming partners he teams up with over stream  ,  but lately they’ve drifted apart  .

      it’s such a cliche that his management’s set him up for a fake dating situation  .  if graeme wants the dramatic  ,  serious roles  ,  then he needs to show he’s a mature and capable young man  .  how else to do that than jump headfirst into a few awkwardly orchestrated dates with another hotshot on the radar  ?  (  ? / 1  )  but they’re not serious  .  so  ,  he hasn’t stopped hooking up  ,  or thinking about a one night stand that totally rocked his world  .   (  ? / 5 )  and  (  ? / 1 )  media and fans definitely know about a few of these  .  the jury’s out for how they feel about it  .  then there’s his competition  ,  actors in the same demographic targeting the same roles  .  it’s a tough business and they know it  ,  but the press picks up on all these weird quotes and posts that twist shit into beefs  .  what other misunderstanding will cause the casket to blow  ?  (  ? / unlimited )  there’s some co stars on old and upcoming films  .  people who see how hard he works and how much effort he puts into what’s seen on the screen  .  they tough out hard days on set and the press circuits during promotion  .  see him at his worst and best  .  (  ? / unlimited )

i’ve neglected this blog, i’m sorry. i want to do things because i truly want to, not because i’m forced to. it was getting to that point where i felt obligated to record my travels and thoughts, so i stopped blogging completely. 

even though i felt that way, i don’t want to forget the things i’ve done. as the name suggests, this is my own personal diary that i can showcase to the world. or, for those who are willing to see.

i still have yet to decide whether or not i want to continue and pick up where i’ve left off, but it seems like a lot to catch up on. so, here’s a list of exciting things (some milestones, too) i’ve done since the last time i’ve blogged:

２０１８年

８月：spent one week in taiwan with a couple friends, then spent 9 days in the philippines with some family members. ended the month staying in tokyo for work and visited the ghibli museum for the first time.

９月：started off september exploring tokyo a bit with friends since i stayed the weekend for work anyways. finally had my first experience at tsukiji market before its relocation to toyosu. tried dominique ansel bakery in harajuku and got to try their viral desserts (watermelon soft serve & a marshmallow s’more). also went to zauo, a fishing restaurant, for the first time. during week 2, went to yokohama to meet with a few friends. visited the cup noodle museum and the creepy, cyberpunk arcade called “your warehouse” in kawasaki. also hit up hawaiian town in yokohama for malasadas and ice cream.

１０月：purchased a brand new fujifilm x100f camera. stayed at “henna hotel” meaning “weird/strange hotel” with robots as front-desk staff. visited disneysea in time for their halloween theme: “villains world”. experienced halloween night in shibuya with some friends. had the day off the next day to recover. 

１１月：spent the day off visiting teamlab borderless for the first time with a friend. also stayed at 9 hours capsule hotel the night before. went to a curry festival in the town that i live in with a few other teachers. spent a day in tokyo shopping for clothing items to wear to my next event. used my pto at the end of the month to visit new zealand to see childish gambino’s “PHAROS”.  i went alone. had a layover in beijing. i got my second tattoo, met some new people off the donald glover subreddit, did some karaoke with them, and even met up for some brunch the next morning. visited hobbiton and toured the glow worm caves. had the best korean chicken in my life for dinner downtown. got to experience gambino live, 10 ft away, in a giant VR dome. felt like my life changed after that. arrived at the airport the following morning only to get fucked over by air china. had to stay in new zealand one more night with a stranger before throwing in the towel and booking an expensive one-way flight from NZ to Tokyo through fiji airlines. layover was nice and chill after going through hell with air china.

１２月：started off december taking the JLPT test in mito. spent week 2 at teamlab planets with an old friend. stayed at a book hostel and fell in love with it. mid-December: spent the holidays back home in las vegas and got another tattoo on my back. a spine tattoo - the only one that caused pain so far. got the chance to see a lot of places that opened up since i moved and caught up with family and friends.

２０１９年

１月：visited dallas to see my brother and cousins for 3 days. went to the dallas zoo and got tattoo #4. returned to work the second week of January. stayed at 9 hours capsule hotel again but in asakusa before meeting up with a friend to show them around for a day. January was full of pizza delivery orders because i was missing home a lot. however, i spent a lot of time and energy into decorating my apartment this month too, so i discovered my interest in home design.

２月：spent valentine’s day weekend in yamanashi prefecture at a friend’s place. we went skiing at a resort near mt fuji. we rented a car and i drove us around the whole weekend. this was a big accomplishment for me. we also explored the small town my friend lived in and went to a quaint forest village. i retook my driver’s license test and passed. now i have both an american and a  japanese driver’s license. i also renewed my visa and contract to stay in japan for a second year during this month.

３月：a new era in japan started - the “Reiwa” period of peace and harmony. the school year also starts and ends in March in time for the sakura blooming. i started March off near yokosuka for strawberry picking and meeting up with an old friend for dinner. i turned 25 midway through the month. then, a few friends visited and we went to disneysea and rented kimonos to try. i tried my second book hostel location, but favored the first one. i visited teamleab planets for the second time. i also cut off 7 inches of hair. then i ended march with my family members visiting me for a week.

４月：my family and i spent a majority of our spring break in tokyo, but we also visited kyoto and osaka. their visit marked my second time at teamlab borderless. we interacted with some deer at nara park. i took them to the ghibli museum. i treated my brother out to a day in akihabara while my parents adventured some small bars near our airbnb. then, we said our goodbyes at the airport during the first weekend of April. i started the new school year shortly afterward with a slight change in my role. i also had to say goodbye to a friend at her farewell party in April before she moved back to america.

５月：the last couple days of April and the first week of May embarked my golden week trip exploring japan yet again. a friend stayed at my apartment for a couple nights. we visited hitachi seaside park for the second time together, went to wanwanland (dog amusement park) in tsukuba, and spent some time in my town before spending a few days in tokyo. we also went to a flower festival near mt fuji very shortly, as traffic was a huge obstacle during this vacation week. we also explored saitama a little bit, since i was considering relocating there. i ended golden week exploring a studio ghibli exhibit at kanda myojin shrine. mid-May, an old friend visited, so we watched detective pikachu and i got to show him the capsule hotel experience as well. the week after, another group of friends visited so we went to teamlab borderless, marking my third time at that location and fifth time overall at a teamlab museum. i really need a stamp card or membership with them at this point.

６月：since i had done a lot of traveling and spent way too much money the past few months, i holed myself up in my apartment to save some money and try to do some self care. got into my own head a lot. experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. now that the rush of things were finally settling, i was and currently am coping with what i know and what i want.

７月：a lot of self-transformation took place recently. some unexpected things happened as well. things seemingly fell off course for a bit. but i’m working towards making a better version of myself this very moment.

For the anniversary trip, all celebs will be staying at Hôtel Le K2 Altitude luxury hotel! Amenities include: ski passes, gym, heated indoor/outdoor pools, spa, movie theater, multiple bars/lounges, babysitting/childcare, playground for kids, arcade room, and free food/drinks at all hours of the day/night. Suites are available with multiple beds for non couples and a couples room is available for those rooming with their significant other.

As we get more people into the roleplay, we will update the list.
