Another Ride - Chapter 15: Update

Picks up just minutes after chapter 14 ended. 

Chapter 14

Sharna walked down the hall and could hear James moving around in the kitchen. She smiled to herself, still a little in disbelief. She wasn’t entirely convinced yet that this wasn’t all a dream. Perhaps she was going to wake up and realize none of this, last night, this morning, even happened.

But she knew it was real. Because there he was standing in her kitchen. His back was to her and she just stood in the doorway watching him. He didn’t have a shirt on because she had put it on herself after she got out of bed, then slipped it back on after her shower.

“I could get used to this,” she said aloud, startling him.

“Don’t sneak up on me when I’m cooking!” he scolded her teasingly. “You’re lucky I didn’t throw an egg at you!”

“Hey,” she said, sitting down at the kitchen table. “As long as I can continue watching you cook shirtless, you can do whatever you want to me.”

He turned and grinned at her. “Is that a promise or a threat?”

“Both,” Sharna said mischievously.

“Good answer.” James turned back to the stove again. “It looks better on you anyways.”

Ten minutes later, they sat eating breakfast together. Neither one of them said a word. They just sat in comfortable silence, enjoying each other’s company. When they finished eating, James took both of their plates to the sink.

“We have salsa this week, by the way. For our dance. I got a text while I was in the shower.”

“Did we do that last time?” James asked, sitting back down next to her at the table.

Sharna shook her head. “It’s a fun one though. Kind of a cha cha feel to it, but it’s more about the performance value. And our song is very fun and cute and flirty, so the choreography will follow that. It’ll be perfect. You look excited, babe,” Sharna said with a laugh.

“Well, you know how I feel about the cha cha, but I’ll take your word for it. Fun and cute and flirty sounds like something I can get behind if I have to.”

“I bet you can,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“You don’t mind if I use your shower, do you?” James asked unexpectedly.

“Of course not. Do you need to go home and change before we go to the studio?” Everything had felt so normal and comfortable so far this morning. This change in subject left just a hint of awkwardness in the air between them.

“I have extra clothes in my bag. I came prepared. Not for this!” he added quickly, blushing when Sharna narrow her eyes at him. “Just my usual extra outfit for Monday nights.”

“Right. Well, help yourself. I’m going to listen to our song for a while. Start getting some ideas.”

“I’ll be back out in a few minutes to help,” James said with a wink, making Sharna laugh. He stood up and leaned down to her, bringing his lips close to hers. She felt his fingers at the hem of his shirt she was wearing. “And I’ll need this back eventually. Not now,” he added as she made to take it off. “You take that off now and I’ll never get my shower in.”

He kissed her, both of them smiling, and walked down the hall.

Sharna took out her phone, walked into the living room, and sat down on the couch. She found their song online and listened to it a couple times. She already had some ideas in her head.

After another listen, she sent a message to Peta. She couldn’t wait any longer.

Busy? Can I call?

A minute later, her phone rang.

“That works, too,” she said by way of greeting. “How are you?”

“Doing good. Busy lately. And exhausted as usual these days. But good. You?”

“I’m…” Sharna didn’t really know how to respond to this. But she had wanted to talk to Peta for a reason. “You said that you wanted me to keep you updated. You still want that?”

“You have an update?!” Peta asked excitedly. “Is it sex?! Please tell me it’s sex!”

“Peta!” Sharna said with a laugh, blushing even though she was alone. She listened carefully and heard the shower running down the hall.

“Well, is it?!”

She sighed. “Yes.” Peta squealed so loud that Sharna had to pull her phone away from her ear. “Calm down,” she said with a laugh. “He’s going to hear you.”

“Why? Where are you?”

“I was just joking. He’s in the shower right now.”

“Whose shower? Your shower?”

“Yes, my shower.”

Peta squealed again.

“How old are you?!” Sharna asked her, thoroughly amused.

“How was it?!” Peta asked, ignoring Sharna’s question.

“It was…. It was pretty amazing.”

“Sharna,” Peta said softly, as though her voice was far away. “Sorry,” she added. “Maks just came in. So, it was amazing, huh?” Sharna could hear the smile in her voice.

“It was definitely amazing.”

She heard Maks’ muffled voice, then Peta said, “They had sex.”

“Peta!” Sharna said again.

“What?! He says he’s very proud of you.”

“You two are ridiculous. Time to change the subject.”

“Alright. Well, he’s leaving now anyways.” Sharna waited while Peta spoke with Maks for a moment. “Okay. Just us again. So, any details for me?”

“It was just… perfect. Better than I ever could have imagined. And he told me he loves me,” she said, remembering suddenly.

“That’s amazing! And you told him?”

“Of course. We had a nice talk this morning. We really cleared the air about some things. Some things from last time. It was really… nice.”

“Some things from last time?” Peta repeated.

Sharna hadn’t talked to anyone about her feelings last time. Not even Peta. She kept it all inside and it ate her alive. But after talking to James about it, she felt unblocked somehow.

“The way I felt about him last time,” Sharna explained. “I never told you. Or Val or anyone. But I knew I was falling for him last time and it was killing me because I couldn’t be with him and I couldn’t even tell him because that would’ve just been completely awful. But we talked about it this morning. I told him I love him and I said that I’ve loved him longer than I should have. He understood. And he said he might have felt something like this for me last time, too.”

“Wow,” Peta said softly. “You should have told me this was happening. Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“You weren’t here and you were busy,” Sharna lied, though both of these statements were true. “I didn’t want to bother you with my problems.”

“I’m sorry. I love you, but that’s total bullshit. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was embarrassed,” Sharna whispered, squeezing her eyes closed as she felt tears welling. “I - I was completely….infatuated. I was just so into him and I knew I loved him like that. Even then. But he had a girlfriend and I felt so guilty and stupid and -.”

“Stop, babe,” Peta interrupted. “Stop. It’s okay. You think you’re not allowed to fall for a guy you can’t have? You didn’t do anything wrong. Of course you fell for him. He was incredible. And it sounds like he still is. Maybe you couldn’t have him then, but you have him now.”

“He said the same thing.”

“Good. Don’t let those old feelings weigh you down. Love him now with all you’ve got. You deserve someone who looks at you the way he does. Don’t think I didn’t notice,” she added, a smile in her voice again. “I saw the way he looked at you last time. He loved you, too. But he didn’t do anything about it because he couldn’t then. Which, when you think about it, actually makes him a really good guy. Nothing did happen last time, right?”

“No,” Sharna said at once. She wiped her tears away, feeling a bit better already. “Nothing. I swear. And I think I’m glad it didn’t. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it had.”

“Exactly. Timing. Fate. It’s all there and working for you. So, are you happy?”

Sharna considered this question for a moment, though she didn’t need to. “Absolutely. So happy.”

“And in love?”

“And in love,” Sharna said with a laugh, hardly believing it herself. Just then she heard the water turn off in the shower. “I better go. He’ll be back out here in a minute.”

“Who else knows?”

“Pretty much everyone knows that we’re together, but no one has the details you do.”

“In other words, you didn’t call anyone else right after. Got it.” Sharna laughed, but then Peta��s voice turned serious. “Don’t ever think you can’t talk to me, okay? I’m never too busy for you. I’m always here. Do you hear me?”

“Yes,” Sharna said guiltily. “I hear you. And I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. Just don’t keep it all bottled up next time, okay? Promise me.”

Sharna promised Peta exactly this and they said their goodbyes. Only a minute later, James came back down the hall. She pouted at him dramatically when he came in the room.

“I see you found another shirt. That’s a shame.”

“I figured you better keep that one on,” he said, dropping next to her on the couch. “We’ve got to be out of here in like half an hour, so no funny business.”

“Funny business?” Sharna repeated, wrinkling her nose at him and making him laugh. “You’re cute.”

“No, you’re cute, love.”

James leaned in and kissed her forehead.

Sharna felt her heart skip. She could get used to mornings like this.

These post-series movies are always worth the wait.

Despite the reset timeline, Schwartz always finds a way to fuck things up. >/

White Woz coming back thanks to dimension bullshit and becoming Another DiEnd by eating the AnotherRide Watch? Gross.

But it was nice to see a bunch of the secondary Riders come back and show off before Geiz kicks ass with their powers.

And I really liked the story that Geitsu (aka his reset self) had where he had to realize again that he didn’t do judo because he liked it. He did it because he saw it as a way to help protect people, like how Sougo wanted to use his kingly power to protect people.

It was so funny to see Sougo and Tsukuyomi being confused on their powers because they didn’t get their memories back but Sougo loved being Grand Zi-O regardless.

And Black Woz was angy that he had to rejoice Geiz Majesty’s debut, which was priceless.
