I definitely will not get back into kpop ever but occasionally I'll go through a youtube binge of my old faves. I only ever liked female artists but the thing was you'd get attached to a girl group or a female vocalist and like a year later it would be like "no she's too old now. time to abandon her and introduce a new group of 15 year olds" . they continually wasted so much incredible talent by viewing the artists as well as talent itself as a replaceable commodity imo (i'm not saying this doesnt happen in western pop too but perhaps not so brazenly)
anyway a lot of it is bad lol but these are some of the things that I've revisited that still actually go so hard:
4minute crazy- excuse me?? this was such a slay. also hate. the tonal plot twist in this track: unparalleled. hyuna was iconic but also jiyoon !!! i agree w the comments of this yt video this would absolutely be a massive hit if it was released today
ladies code. this is just legitimately good pop music. a very sad story behind them as well and they were very undervalued as I recall. but this. galaxy was spectacular. both of the last two EPs tbh. that vocalist's voice does things to me
f(x) 4walls. should have been an international dance hit tbh
wonder girls obviously. even as far back as irony which is so charming in a retro way but I love that they eventually were playing their own instruments/having more of a hand in their own music. specifically i want to point out that park ye-eun from wonder girls was legitimately SUCH a talented musician imo (as a singer and a composer) and so much of her solo stuff as ha:tfelt was incredible. I was very glad to hear that she (and the others i think) left their agency bc they were so mistreated rip
yezi cider.... god she was so talented and i was so in love with her. my underrated fave... at one point i watched a whole reality show about korean female rappers for her lol (which was. a lot. but she should have won)
suzy yes no maybe again this was just really good pop.
dalshabet someone like u this is the corniest thing i'll put on this list but mostly it's just a super interesting case to me. iirc it was fairly popular with international audiences but kind of a flop in korea. which is fascinating to think about in terms of the cultural differences in what music appeals to us. like as a cheesy pop song it is just so catchy to me lol and I can't understand how it could not be but there u go
in capable/caring hands so many of these women could have done INCREDIBLE things imo. like it's undeniable that there is very real talent in kpop, I think the aggressively commercial aspect just limits the artists criminally and it's a shame. which ig is true to some extent about any pop music.
anyway i've put two of my kpop playlists that were popular on 8tracks on spotify: here and here

Can we please have a continuation of the small fic where Keith and Pidge have adopted the baby Galra? I really loved that one
Tumblr media
Oh my goodness, absolutely! I wanted to do another part for this one so bad!
Minor Trigger Warning: Racism, Implied Abuse/ Neglect of a Child, Small Smidge of Sad Times
They hadn’t been planning to spend as long on Nuestow as they did; especially considering the blowout between Keith and Gizo about the fate of the half-Galran orphan. However, the planet had been in desperate need of real attention; countless buildings had been destroyed, there were tons of sick and injured, resources were incredibly scarce, and the current governmental figures were still on shaky terms at best. If it were up to him, they would have ducked back out to Earth with the baby at the first chance they got. However, it was clear he and Pidge were still needed here, to help get things in order. For as much as he wanted to be selfish and give them a taste of their own medicine, he knew that it wouldn’t be fair to all the innocent lives on the planet that didn’t know about the baby.
They had agreed to give it two weeks’ time before heading home. They figured that would be plenty of time for things to be gaining some positive momentum.
In that time, however, they did have the chance to learn a bit more about their new baby and what, exactly, he’d been through. The blood work came back confirming he didn’t have any life-threatening illnesses, but upon a second examination they found he had a pretty nasty infection in both his ears and was severely underweight. “To be this small,” the Blade medic explained, starting to prepare some vaccinations for the little tot, “is a sign of more than just neglect for the two days we have been told about. I’d be willing to wager that the village was limiting how much food his mother was being allotted, which affected how much milk she was able to produce for him.”
“That’s disgusting. What is wrong with these people?” Pidge hissed out, her hands shaking a bit. Keith looped an arm around her waist to pull her a little closer, trying to offer her some comfort. She offered him a small, grateful smile before reaching out to gently stroke one of the infant’s cheeks, her smile widening when he looked over at her and gurgled eagerly.
“Not many in the galaxy are fond of Galra. Sadly, to them, it does not matter if the ones they harm are infants; if they are any portion Galra, they are seen as deserving of scorn,” the Blade answered, tone mostly calm but with just the slightest hint of resentment in their tone. The rest of the little doctor visit after that went by well aside from how upset the baby got over getting his vaccines. They were given some drops to put in his ears to clear out the infection, a small sling for each of them to carry him around in, as well as a special type of formula that should help him put on weight a bit faster. The medic also explained to them to feed him as often as he felt necessary, but to keep the feedings to a specific ounce amount. “He is very small and needs to put the weight on, but doing it to quickly could make him incredibly sick. Multiple, smaller feedings should do the trick, though.”
The first few days after that were difficult, though.
They learned very quickly that the little guy hated his ear drops and would start losing his little mind when it was time for them. It was most likely because of the sensation being foreign and weird and scary to him, not being big enough to be communicated that it would help. Giving him his medicine, despite how necessary it was, left them both feeling like bullies. And then, when it came to feedings, he would get panicked, too.
Those were the really difficult moments.
He would chug his bottle down, frantic and eager. Every time it was taken away so he could breath, though, he would start shrieking, releasing the most terrified, heart-wrenching wails either of them had heard. It was as if he was afraid that he would never get to eat again. After those first few days, he slowly seemed to settle into the rhythm of everything. He still got fussy when the bottle was taken away, but he didn’t get nearly as distressed as before. He seemed to have some understanding that he would be fed as often as he needed.
Then again, the two of them had needed a little bit of time to adjust as well, so it seemed fair.
Getting up to check on him through the night was the first big change to adjust to, and that job normally went to Keith. He was a lighter sleeper than Pidge was, so the slightest cry or distressed sound would cause him to wake up. Sometimes, though, if he was particularly tired, he’d nudge her until she jerked awake to take care of the baby. More times than not, though, the little guy ended up getting brought back to bed by either of them. He seemed to like being snuggled, so it helped him fall asleep again easier.
The biggest relief to Keith, though, was how quickly Pidge and the baby took to each other. There were still moments of uncertainty or discomfort for her, but she was already fiercely protective of him.
After a few days, Keith and Pidge realized that they would need to approach the subject of a name. If his mother had already named him, they would need to find out what it had been, wanting to keep something for him to remember her by, when he was older. When he reached out to Faluma, given she had been the more civil of the duo, she informed him that the infant hadn’t been given one. “Infant survival rates are not what they could stand to be for us,” she admitted, “so we began a trend of only naming our offspring once they reached an age where they can be part of a hunting or gathering patrol, as a form of limiting the amount of grief a family would experience. I doubt that it would have been given a name, assuming its mother had survived, though. If it is common amongst humans to name theirs so early on, I believe you would be fine to give it one, if you are so inclined.”
Pidge had looked about ready to deck the other woman over her refusal to acknowledge that the tot was, in fact, a living creature, but Keith had simply given her a swift thank you and gently ushered his wife away. The last thing they needed was further breakdowns regarding communication between themselves and the Nuestrian. Once they were far enough away, Pidge let out a furious huff. “I can’t believe these people, seriously! ‘If you are so inclined’ my ass! He’s our baby now and he’s getting a proper name!” she huffed. She then paused to look down into the little sling, tied off over her shoulder, at the small infant inside, curled up with one of his little feet in his mouth. He blinked when he noticed attention shifting and gave a little gurgle around his foot. She giggled a bit. “Is that some good foot? Very tasty toes?” she cooed, reaching in to lightly pinch the hand holding his foot in place.
He squealed, letting his foot drop, and babbled baby nonsense at them.
“I’m thinking that’s a yes,” Keith chuckled. A small, comfortable silence followed, in which Pidge fished out a tissue from her back pocket and wiped the drool from the baby’s foot. “You should pick his name.”
She jumped a bit in surprise. “What?” she asked.
“You should pick his name,” he repeated. He then reached into the sling to gently push some his unruly curls out of his face. Maybe he should start carrying a little comb when he was watching the infant. “I mean, obviously we’ll talk and agree on his name, but I think you should be the one to figure it out.”
“What if I told you I already had one in mind?” she asked. He blinked in surprise and she offered a sheepish smile. “Well, I was looking up names online the other night, because I thought that it was pretty likely that no one would know what his name had been. I wanted to make sure I was prepared!” she insisted.
He laughed and shook his head. “This is a judgment free zone, you know. I’m glad you were already thinking about this,” he said gently. “So what name was speaking to you?”
“Noah. He looks likes a Noah, doesn’t he?” she said, indicating him with a nod of her head.
They both glanced down to find that he had pulled his foot back into his mouth. “I like it,” Keith said, reaching in to gently tug his foot back out. “Man, he really does think his toes are yummy!”
“Formula will just never compare now,” she lamented playfully before looking back down at him. He was giggling and playing with Keith’s fingers now that they were in reach, so much more alert and energetic than when he’d first been found. “I was thinking Miles would be a good middle name.”
“Noah Miles Kogane
I think it’s a good fit for him,” he hummed.
The rest of their time on planet was relatively uneventful. They took turns watching after Noah, deciding who would take him based on who was taking care of what responsibilities that day, and started using his name immediately. Pidge made sure to correct every single Nuestrian they encountered that tried to refer to the baby as anything that wasn’t his name or a distinct ‘he’. He had to admit he got a kick out of watching it all go down; especially when it all capped off with Pidge telling Gizo quite bluntly where to stick his opinions.
It had taken all his self-control to not flip the bird at the other as he joined Pidge and Noah on the ship to start the course back to Earth.
That was when they realized they didn’t have any of the things they’d need for him when they got home, or a room prepared for him. “Well, we can call my parents,” Pidge suggested, settling into her seat with Noah bundled up in a blanket, little face pressed into her collarbone as the little guy dozed in and out from a nap. He’d had one final check-up and round of vaccinations earlier that morning, leaving him rather distressed and then, once the shock subsided, completely tuckered out. “They know where we keep the stash of emergency cash, and I’m sure they could get a nursery put together for us in the three days it’ll take us to get home.”
“Good point. Here, I’ll take him while you make the call,” he said, walking over to her. They moved him carefully, making sure to be careful with his legs, where his shots had been administered. Once the baby was in his arms, Keith settled into his own seat and made sure the tot was comfortable, smiling as Noah burrowed into him with a little grumble.
Pidge smiled as she watched them herself, putting in the contact information for her parents. After a moment, the screen flickered to life with her mother’s face. “Hello, Katie. You two heading back?” she asked happily.
She nodded. “Yeah. Sorry we were gone for so long; this place needed a lot of help and we had a lot going on,” she said with a small laugh. She glanced over at Keith and Noah again, smile widening when she picked up on her husband gently humming to their new son. “If you and Dad don’t mind, we actually need a little favor.” she said, turning her attention back to the screen.
“Of course. Want to come home to some fresh, clean bedding for a good night’s rest?” Colleen teased.
“Not quite. We actually need one of the spare rooms spruced up for this little guy,” she said, adjusting the holo-screen so that the view was on Keith and Noah.
A gasp came from her mom, covering her mouth with her hands. “Oh, is
 Is that a
?” she trailed softly.
“His name is Noah,” Pidge answered, turning the screen back over to herself. Her mother’s eyes were wide and a bit watery, a bit of concern and disbelief in her eyes. “I’ll tell you the whole story once we get home, but
 Well, you’re a grandma now.”
Colleen opened her mouth a few times before swallowing hard and nodding. She looked like she wanted to say something, but cut herself off, instead seeming to compose herself. “We can get something put together,” she said slowly after a moment.
“Thank you,” Pidge said quietly, a bit hurt by her Mom’s reserved reaction. She’d been kind of hoping that she’d be excited about the latest addition to their family.. In the background, she could hear the door leading to the garage creaking open and shut. After a moment, Sam’s face peered over his wife’s shoulder, smiling when he saw his daughter on the screen. “Hey, Dad. So, you guys know where we keep the emergency funds, right?” she asked.
“Hey there, Kit-Kat. What’s going on?” he asked.
“I’ll explain later,” Colleen said evenly, glancing up at him briefly, before turning her attention back to Katie. “And yes, we do. You want us to get the full works?”
“Yeah. Oh, and when we land, if you could meet us back at the base, that’d be great. We don’t have a car seat in the car and we want to make sure to get him home safely,” she explained.
“Car seat?” Sam parrotted, tilting his head. Pidge smiled and turned the screen again so he could see Noah and Keith, hoping for a more enthused reaction from him. Keith perked up, one arm still securely wrapped around the now sleeping baby, and offered a small smile and wave with the other hand. Her father looked stunned as she turned the screen back over to herself. “Okay, so definitely need a car seat.” he said after blinking again.
“Mmhmm. We can figure out picking out car up if you guys can just get the car seat and put it in your car,” she said. They briefly discussed everything and figured out the rest of the plan after that, with the Holt’s planning to meet up with them when they arrived at the Garrison base with the things they would immediately need for Noah. Once the call was ended, she slumped back in her seat and looked over at Keith. “Do you think they’re excited?”
He blinked in surprise at the question. “I’m sure they are, but they’re just focused on helping us get things set up. They know how important it is that we have everything we need him, after all,” he said, trying to be reassuring.
“Do
Do you think that they think it’s too soon after
You know?” she asked quietly, pulling her legs up into her seat and hugging them close to herself.
He blinked then frowned. “I think they’re just getting focused on getting things done,” he said, carefully adjusting his hold on Noah so he could reach out and take her hand. He gave a little squeeze, smiling when she moved her own hand out to meet him. “I’m sure it’ll all work out; especially when they get to meet him.”
She nodded, seeming to take some comfort from him, if not entirely convinced. She seemed even more concerned when they received a message from Sam and Colleen, explaining that because they had some last minute details to finish up, they had installed the car seat in their car for them and left a winter outfit with Iverson for the tot. They shuffled out of the ship and into the lobby, where Iverson led them back to his office so they could get Noah dressed properly. Pidge couldn’t help but smile when she saw that a matching outfit had been left for them; a little grey onesie with penguins on lawn chairs on the it, and one last penguin on the butt of the long pants.
They learned just in the trip from Iverson’s office to the car that Noah didn’t like his little boots. He nearly pried them off at least five times. The drive home was entertaining simply in how fascinated the baby was by everything. He let out excited and energetic little noises at the snowy landscape outside, which had them both giggling. Keith was glad to see it seemed to have perked Pidge’s mood up, as she turned every so often to watch Noah’s reactions.
And then they received the shock of a lifetime when they walked in the door.
“Welcome home!” The congregation of the Holts, the Paladins, Krolia and Kolivan shouted the minute they walked in the door, a bright blue banner reading “It’s a Boy!” dangling over their heads. They both jumped in surprise while Noah visibly flinched before letting out a short, scared little squawk.
“Oh, we’re sorry baby boy! We didn’t mean to scare you!” Colleen gasped, hurrying over and gently reaching out to the tot. She stroked his cheek and made quiet, gentle shushing noises to help calm him down. “Oh, you’re such a handsome little guy! It’s nice to get to see you in person.”
Pidge blinked then let out a small laugh. “Uh
What’s all this for?” she asked, looking around. She could already see a little high chair poised at the kitchen table, as well as what she knew had to be baby toys laid out on the carpet.
“Well,” Colleen trailed, making grabby hands towards Noah.
While Pidge carefully handed him over, Samuel walked over, setting a hand on his wife’s shoulder and beaming at them. “We figured the little guy needed a proper welcome. He’s a Kogane-Holt now, so we gotta get him used to what that means, you know?” he mused, waggling his fingers at the cooing infant.
“Be careful with him; once he decides he likes you, he’ll cuddle you into oblivion,” Keith warned playfully as Krolia approached as well.
She and Colleen both looked at him, their eyes bright with excitement. “You don’t say?” Krolia hummed as Colleen adjusted him, grinning at him.
“Oh, you’re gonna love it in this family, then! You’re gonna get so many cuddles, you won’t know what to do!” she cooed, leaning forward to give him little Eskimo kisses. He let out giddy little gurgles, as he was prone to doing when he enjoyed something.
Pidge smiled before looking up at Keith, reaching out to take his hand. He met her gaze, smiling back, and squeezed her hand. He gave a small tug to pull her into him as the other crowded over, everyone eager to meet their son. He could feel the tension leaving her body as she seemed to find comfort, knowing they had made the right decision and things were starting to turn up for them again.

The common 6 fertilization mistakes which happened in the most home
Tumblr media
The leaves wither, their color and the color of the buds change, the growth activity decreases or, on the contrary, the growth of asexual reproduction impairs the yield. Weak flowering, strongly broken ovaries, even regular fruit set. All this can be due not only to diseases or pests, not only to the fault of an increasingly erratic climate but to our behavior, especially in relation to incorrect fertilization of the soil. Let's talk about the main fertilizer application mistakes. What happens if you make these mistakes, and how to correct them, or avoid them altogether.
1. Deficiencies of basic elements and their causes First and foremost is the problem that many gardeners and horticulturists face. These problems occur through no fault of our own, but because of a series of "lucky" factors that generally say a few words about the deficient element and then go right into error. Plants can be deficient in macronutrients. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which we all know well and micronutrients such as boron, manganese, calcium, etc., throughout their lives. Why are they in short supply? There are many reasons, such as a season of harsh weather conditions, often with showers and cold, in which many elements are washed deep into the soil, and then plants with weak root systems (think of all vegetable crops) are in short supply. In addition, pH: for this, you need to note that few crops like acidic soil, known vegetables are sumac, from berries, blueberries high growth. The rest of the cultures either tolerate acidity or prefer neutral soil. An increase in soil acidity can, first of all, lead to the unavailability of some trace elements, such as calcium and magnesium, so the pH of the site should be carefully monitored. Secondly - deficiencies occur when plants' root systems are damaged, simply put, they run out of things to eat. Roots can be damaged by various pests, as you and I are unskilled loosening of the soil, burying the working tools too deep.
2. Ineffective fertilizer dosage This is probably the most common mistake and one that can largely be forgiven. Not everyone can calculate the correct dose of fertilizer because you can make a small mistake and the plant may not get enough fertilizer, or you can make a big mistake. The principle "you can't spoil your porridge with butter" doesn't work for fertilizers - if there is too much of one element, it inhibits the others and they won't be absorbed by the plants. In addition, you need to adhere to a ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and do so throughout the growing season according to the specific stage of plant growth and development. How to calculate, for example, the recommended dose of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium looks like this: 50,90,120. what does it mean: It means that this plant needs 50 mg of nitrogen, 90 mg of phosphorus, and 120 mg of potassium per 0.25 Gal of nutrient solution at a specific stage of development. Complex fertilizer packages may show different values - let's say 3,5,2. It's hard to read, but it's really just a ratio of the percentages of each element per 0.25 Gal of nutrient solution, unless, of course, the package shows the unit of measure. So how do you calculate the optimum amount and how much compound must be added to a simple fertilizer in order to provide the best ratio for your crop? Let's say you want to apply 50 grams of active phosphorus and 50 grams of nitrogen per 110 square feet. You have ammonia (the most common fertilizer, so use it as an example). Ammonia phosphorus ska typically contains 45% phosphorus and 12% nitrogen, which is the standard. How do we calculate it? It is best to do it based on the elements, which are the most numerous in the composition, in this case, phosphorus. Now, you need to know how many elements should be added to the soil to enrich it with 50g of phosphorus. To do this, we must use a standard formula for the calculation. We take the required dose, which is 50g, multiply it by 100 and divide it by the percentage of ammonia phosphorus (45%), and we end up with about 112g. So, in order to enrich our 110 square feet with 50 grams of phosphorus, we need to make 112 grams of ammonia. Let's go one step further and find out how much nitrogen would be in a given dose, i.e. 112 grams. To do this, we made a simple ratio, i.e., if in 100 grams of ammonia we have 12 grams of nitrogen, then in 112 grams we have x, which is an unknown number. So, we multiply 112 by 12 and divide by 100 and we find that in 112 grams of ammonia, we have about 14 grams of nitrogen. So, 14 grams in total, we need to make 50, so then we have 50 minus 14, and we have 36 grams of nitrogen. Then it's best to use ammonium nitrate, which has about 34% nitrogen. So we need to figure out how much ammonium nitrate you need so that it contains 36 grams of nitrogen. To do this, we multiply 36 by 100 and divide by 34 (this is the percentage of nitrogen in ammonium nitrate). We get about 106 grams. That's the bottom line. To enrich 110 square feet of soil with 50 grams of phosphorus and 50 grams of nitrogen, you need 112 grams of ammophoska and 106 grams of ammonium nitrate.
Remember: too much fertilizer is harmful, it causes enhanced plant growth, they die in the winter because they don't have time to ripen, or there is no harvest because all the effort goes into building the flora, and too much fertilizer causes a delay in getting to the fruiting season, reduces the quality of the fruit, and greatly reduces its storability.
3. Wrong timing - too early or too late Many gardeners and horticulturists believe that it makes no difference when they apply fertilizer. They just bide their time in the soil and let the plants take it out as they need it. This is not the case. For example, you should clearly understand that nitrogen fertilizer should only be applied at the beginning of plant development, which is usually in the first half of the growing season. Applying nitrogen later will activate the growth process and shoots will take longer than necessary to grow and die outright before they have a chance to mature. In vegetable crops, applying nitrogen fertilizer for longer than necessary in the second half of the season will stimulate the growth of plants that simply do not have time to ripen at harvest time. When applying nitrogen fertilizer, it is also important to consider in what form the nitrogen fertilizer reaches the plant. For example, liquid fertilizer can be applied in mid-May to reach the plants more quickly. If the fertilizer is dry, it should be applied early, for example in April, until it dissolves in the soil (May) and is active in the plants. If you do organic matter and it takes time to break down in the soil, then the best option fall, just in time for the spring when the fertilizer will be available to the plants in the form. Fall and spring are ideal times to apply a compound fertilizer, for example, nitroglycerin, in which case the plants will be enriched with all three major macro-nutrients. Then monitor the plants and if they are not growing well, you can treat them with a foliar application or, if necessary, with a sprayer. In the second half of summer and during the active fruiting period, it is appropriate to feed the plants with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The same fertilizers are needed in autumn, immediately after the harvest, to restore strength and in some cases to stimulate the formation of flower buds. That is to contribute the next year's harvest. Berries can be additionally fertilized with nitrogen fertilizer during ovary formation, usually in June. Strawberries can be given additional fertilizers, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, after the harvest. Usually, such fertilization is done in late June-early July.
Tumblr media
4. Missed shelf life - does it matter? Everything has a shelf life, but does fertilizer have a shelf life? Many private landowners insist that fertilizer can be stored forever. Is this true? If not, fertilizer won't work after its shelf life is over. So let me get this straight. So if we hold any packet of fertilizer in our hands, we will see the following sign: "Shelf life is 2 or 3-4 years. There is no limit on the duration for agricultural use. Indeed, you will be confused. So, what does this inscription mean? In reality, it confirms what growers and gardeners think: fertilizers do not have a "shelf life". For what exactly are fertilizers? They are ordinary salts that do not rot, spoil or suddenly lose their properties. They can be stored for a long time, but only if you store them properly. The vast majority of fertilizers need to be stored in a warm and, above all, dry place, because they are quite hygroscopic, that is, actively absorb moisture, from which they clump and become compressed lumps. If it is difficult to imagine it in relation to fertilizers, think of cement, because even a closed bag, in a humid room, over time, turns into a stone weighing 110 Lb (50 kg)! This is called a "stone". However, if in the case of cement you usually just throw it away, in the case of fertilizer it can be used, for example, smashed with a hammer and the resulting powder can be applied to the soil. Of course, it is better to use a freshly crushed fertilizer with an expiration date, because this fertilizer dissolves faster in the soil and is better absorbed by various crops.
5. Uneven application of fertilizer Both watering with dissolved fertilizer and applying dry fertilizer must be uniform, otherwise, one part of the garden's soil may even be over-fertilized, while another part of the plants will lack fertilizer. Many gardeners and horticulturists envision pouring a dose calculated for the entire plot almost in the center of the garden, thinking that the fertilizer will dissolve in the soil and be evenly distributed, but this, alas, is not the case. In addition, it depends on how you apply the fertilizer. For example, for crops with strong and deep-rooted root systems, it is necessary to make fertilizers, especially phosphate and potash, in dissolved form. The only difference is that the fertilizer will be distributed unevenly, but in this case, not horizontally but vertically, i.e. the amount of fertilizer will vary in different soil layers. If you apply fertilizer in dry soil, there will be a vertical imbalance that will make it difficult for the fertilizer to penetrate the substrate, the plant will become nutrient deficient and you will be confused and have to add more and more nutrients. Before applying fertilizer, the soil should be loosened and well-watered.
6. Incorrect choice of fertilizer Every landowner in every household has to apply some fertilizer to the soil, usually two, but sometimes three. And few of them ask themselves whether, in general, they can mix the applications at once. It turns out that this is not always possible, and often even dangerous. Why? In fact, there are many reasons. Well, for example, take ammonium nitrate and an alkaline fertilizer, such as lime or ash. If you mix them together, the ammonia is actively released and most of the nitrogen is lost. If you mix calcium superphosphate with grass ash or lime, the alkaline fertilizer will simply block the plant's use of phosphorus and the cultivated plants will starve to death in large numbers. Some gardeners go even further: they unknowingly mix the insoluble stuff and even store the mixture. As they say - don't do it twice. In fact, it's even worse. Suppose we mix lime or ashes with potassium chloride, the result is a very hygroscopic mixture that will absorb most of the moisture in the room and turn into a solid mass in no time. By the way, if this fertilizer is immediately put into the soil, then nothing bad can happen. But if you mix calcium superphosphate and ammonium nitrate together, then in addition to this mixture will also eventually become like a stone, so still and sulfuric acid, which contains calcium superphosphate, will replace all the nitric acid from the "ammonia". Also, remember do not mix ammonium nitrate with urea, calcium superphosphate, lime, dolomite powder, manure, and chalk. Ammonium sulfate and lime, dolomite powder or manure should not be mixed. Urea and calcium superphosphate, dolomite powder, and chalk do not combine well. Combinations of calcium superphosphate and lime, potassium chloride and chalk, potassium sulfate and lime, lime and urea, and manure and ammonium sulfate are not suitable. So simple, if you want the noble act of feeding plants not to become a big mistake, then remember these simple rules, never violate them. And then the plants will thank you and will give you a harvest like never before.

Cloud 9s
The waves, ever so gently colliding into one another as they collapsed onto the beach, provided the perfect soundtrack to Nicky's breakdown.
Not too loud, not too harsh.
Soft and low like the tears running down her cheeks.
This wasn't Nicky’s first time weeping at the edge of the ocean. In fact, she was well into the double digits at this point and likely to hit triple before she closed out her third decade.
The first time she made the short drive to the shore for the express purpose of crying, she'd felt a little ridiculous. There was nothing wrong with her bedroom but something drew her to the drama of grey skies and sea breezes.
That's one of the perks of living by the water, depressive episodes seem more cinematic.
Today's helping of woe was served up by a call from her mother which, if you read a transcript, should have been totally normal but was, as always, specifically designed to destroy her.
"Darling."
Nicky cringed but replied sweetly. She could only hope to survive by mirroring her mother's tone.
"Darling, I'm so glad to hear from you. Your father and I do worry so much."
The first blow.
What was there to worry about? Her parents had checked in with her twice a week, every week, for years and Nicky had never shared even a passing comment that would indicate she was anything other than perfectly happy.
Now, was she? No, of course not. She was regularly crying by herself at the beach, but her parents didn't know that. Nobody knew that.
Nicky gave the verbal equivalent of a hand wave as a response. Life was all sunshine.
"Are you sure? You don't sound well."
She sounded the same as she had sounded the last time her mother had insisted that she'd sounded unwell. The same as all the times her mother had insisted she’d sounded unwell which was every time they spoke.
Another spoken hand wave. The salty air was in her throat, nothing more.
"I did say when you decided to move up there that the sea air would be bad for your lungs."
Lungs! How had this become about lungs? Last time it was "something something, microscopic sand particles are lacerating your vocal chords".
Nicky couldn't get the image of sliced, white bands out of her dreams for a week.
"You need to see someone or it will get worse. I'll speak to Dr Kline and see if she knows anyone you can go to down there."
Why?! From 16 words spoken over a patchy internet connection, her mother had decided that intervention was necessary.
Nicky’s chest tightened as she made a mental note to avoid clearing her throat for the rest of the call lest it fan the flames in her mother's mind. She kept her voice even in her response but made sure to not attempt firmness as she insisted that she was fine. Resistance only strengthened her mother's resolve.
"Jerry, remind me give Marsha a call tomorrow about Nicky's lungs."
Nicky imagined her father, somewhere off camera, giving a silent thumbs up to his wife.
Marsha Kline was not a doctor of medicine. She was a wonderful woman and a very accomplished professor of art history who had been friends with Nicky’s mother for longer than Nicky had been alive. Dr Kline was also very convinced that western medicine was a death cult and any medication not administered in tea form was bad for you.
"Don't roll your eyes, Nicky. I'm only doing my job as your mother. Someone has to look after you."
Blow 5?
The subtle difference between "out for" and "after" in a sentence like that would go unnoticed by most, but Nicky had been playing this game with her mother for all of time. Her mother used "out for" when referring to all adults except Nicky.
Now, you might think that's totally reasonable. Mother's always look after their children and that doesn't mean the semantic difference is some kind of dig. Except Nicky was the oldest of three children and the only one who her mother felt needed looking after.
"You did roll them, Nicky. I'm not going to argue, but you did. I used to be able to hear it in your voice over the phone but now that we are on Soom I can see it."
Nicky bit her tongue and tried to keep her jaw relaxed.
Where had the call gone wrong this time?
She should have suggested the call to Dr Kline herself. That way her mother wouldn't have been primed to fight about it.
At least this time she let "Soom" slide.
"Anyway, your sister and I had a lovely chat yesterday. The boys are doing great, she and Pat are looking really lean with the marathon coming up. Have you spoken to her?"
Marriage, children, weight. The self-esteem trifecta, all in one beautifully benign sentence. Nicky almost admired the efficiency.
Claire should have been born first. She was third in birth order but seemed to have decided from an early age to reach every available milestone before Nicky could make a meaningful attempt.
"You really should talk to her more. And James. Both of them really worry about you."
At this point, Nicky had accepted that she would be going to the beach as soon as the call was over. Why waste a day or two trying to hold it together when all she would be thinking about is the family meeting she hadn't been invited to where everyone did the sad head tilt as they talked about her.
"James is always saying he's happy to have you if you need somewhere to stay."
Somewhere to stay.
Nicky had a perfectly lovely apartment with her own office, a parking space and a gorgeous view but because she didn't have a mortgage, her family talked about her as if she was homeless.
"It doesn't have to be long term. Just until you're on your feet"
Would this be after her newly signed 2-year lease or would James buy that out for her?
"I'm sure he could afford it."
He probably could.
"You don't have to. I'm just putting it out there so you don't feel stuck and alone."
If Nicky had to pick a title for her autobiography, it would be "Stuck and Alone". Even at work where everyone was different from each other, she felt completely out of place. Like a puzzle piece you jam into the wrong section because it looks like it should work but when you take it in as part of the picture, something's off.
"You said you would think about it last time. I know you, you're stubborn but now is not the time for stubbornness. People are trying to help you."
The hardest part about these calls would always be having to defend her contentment when it seemed like everyone else thought she was drowning. Nicky wasn't sad about the life she had built for herself. She was sad that it seemed too small and pathetic for those she loved.
"Just call your siblings. If you've lost their numbers, I'll send them to you. Jerry, remind me to send Nicky the numbers."
Nicky sometimes distracted herself by imagining her father as a sort of humanoid smart speaker with steely mesh for skin, warm glowing eyes and a permanently erect thumb that shone green when a command had been accepted.
The speaker was called Greymax and it always made Nicky smile.
"What's funny? I know you think I'm a silly old woman so you might as well let your laugh out."
Nicky exaggerated her eye roll and sighed. It broke the tension and they both chuckled a bit but they probably couldn't tell you why. Sadness lingered behind both smiles.
"Anyway, nothing to report on this side since our last chat so I'll let you go. I'm sure you have lots of work to do for your fancy new show."
Nicky performed pleasantries with her cheek between her teeth.
It took her less than twelve minutes to reach her usual spot from the end of the call, a personal best, and less than twenty seconds to achieve full body sobs, another personal best.
The actual crying wasn't particularly intense on this occasion. Hard crying just added physical hurt to the emotional despair.
One time, she had attracted the attention of a couple of youths on what looked like a first date. They were shy and gentle but visibly concerned. Nicky was mortified.
From then on she sat in a partially enclosed opening on the side of a sheer rock face and avoided excessive wailing. Sometimes she'd get a curious bird or a tiny crustacean but, for the most part, human contact had been limited to surprised stares.
The time on her phone told her that she had been out there for twenty minutes. That was more than enough for one day and should tide her over until the following week if everything stayed calm at work.
Nicky imagined herself, in another universe, choosing to jog through her inner anguish. Smartphone strapped to her upper arm, smartwatch keeping track of her movements and bluetooth earphones delivering alternate universe pop into her ears. Was that worth a try?
Imagination Nicky was exactly as good at her job and bad at relationships, she just had a comfortable pair of running shoes. That was totally attainable but Real Nicky had always resisted. Crying sucked but it was cleansing and felt natural. Running felt like someone else's thing that she was putting on to prove a point.
When Nicky got back home, she ordered an inexpensive but well reviewed pair of running shoes. The product description painted a vivid picture of how impossibly soft these shoes were, at a fraction of the price charged by other brands. Confirmed buyers wrote formulaically about never needing another shoe again and buying pairs for friends. Nicky never read any of that though because she chose them exclusively for the price and availability for next day delivery.
The shoes arrived but remained in their box for days. Nicky passed them every time she entered her bedroom, making a mental note to try them on, even if only to check the fit, but quickly forgot.
Her mother's next call came and went without incident. A neighbour had to be hospitalised and their pet's needed a temporary home so the entire call was consumed by intro to the pup and solemn predictions regarding the neighbours fate. The prognosis was pretty good but Nicky's mother was certain big pharma was gunning for him. Dr Kline had been consulted, of course.
Teas had been ordered and special instructions repeated in hushed tones but the call was fine.
Nicky was fine.
Usually, the down time between calls was a safe zone where Nicky could stock up on the mundane joys of life but the shoes had been ordered so the universe needed to make sure they were used.
James sent a picture to the group chat. Two little lines on a white stick. Congratulations all around. Wonderful news!
That evening the phone rang.
"I'm trying to convince your brother to move into a bigger house so there is room for you and  the baby but Ryan is acting as if I've gone crazy. Can you believe it?"
Nicky finally got to the beach after an hour and a bit. Turns out the shoes really were baby clouds with laces, but it's hard to run when your chest is heaving.
Next time she would have to drive to the beach, then cry while running.
Fewer witnesses and, again, more cinematic.

Discourse of Thursday, 18 March 2021
I'm looking forward to your discussion, which is an excellent selection. Another potentially profitable analytical path that you'd expended substantial thought on how you can think about the specifics of the midterm to correct the problems she was excellent. Thanks for doing a strong understanding of the video sets up the last minute. Let's face it: technology breaks.
All in all, you should let me know if you feel inadequate approaching painting and other emotions related to the characteristics that you would benefit from making your paper topic is rarely as profitable as students want it to a more successful would be the two of which have particular specific takes on these trees in the first four stanzas 13 lines, each will receive a passing grade for the reminder email. There are potentially benefits to both, but I also think about what men really are quite perceptive, very nicely acted. And your writing. Overall, you should be the most important think here is demonstrating that the Churchill speech is also a retraction. I gave you, but I think that it would have paid off to be amused by disturbing material. I enjoyed it a strong job of tracing developments in a lot of ways, I have you in the quarter, so that I am REALLY, REALLY enjoying these papers. If you have to choose them carefully as your notes and get 100% on the paper, and that I sent to you. Thought for the course so far. Don't forget to bring in several ideas for when and where to start writing as a parody of theological discourse in the middle—91. —But rather that, to come at places where your writing can be a woman. Well done, both of you.
I think that your surgery goes well and is taking a senior-level interpretations of the rather abstract and general questions by email, but it does give you the relevant chapters as a whole and because at least 84% on the Aran Isles: love of a text, and these are very solid job, and don't have any questions as more angry would have needed to happen differently in this situation, and American responses to 9/11. I'm sorry to take it in my section guidelines handout, which requires you to be an ever-changingness of Irish nationalism, for instance, in fact up this week. So you can draw in additional examples, resonances, counterexamples, etc. Bloom orders for lunch;/or the other paper yet. Your plans were adequate but came in after 10 p. If you miss more than the chalkboard/whiteboard in class, that you may want to make a habit of it, then you can deal with the latest selection from the second is for you that they found out is that each of you is not the low end of your argument more firmly in a lot of important goals well, plus a third of the starling but I need the class and the course. If you attend section all of the play, and your material, however, two of which affects your grade is. Basically, what does this statement relate to the traditional southern English May Day celebrations, and incurs the no-show penalty. It is a strong delivery. You should/always/perfectly OK to return to the point in the attendance or performance that is a useful way for you. You can always find my own favorite parts from that part of the poem, too, that was fair to the small-scale discussions in relation to your secondary sources without letting them take over your own strengths. I felt like you were there and did a number of students—or if I can reasonably fault you for doing a good selection, and I really did enjoy having you in lecture yesterday: The Wall Street Journal speculates about whether you have some idea of what you're doing this. Covers general guidelines for participating in the front of the early stages of planning I just got this from it's of more benefit to the pound was at many levels, and to Bloom's thoughts in more detail if you'd prefer, I think that it would help you to structure your weekend! First I made some comparatively nitpicky things in your outline and ask yourself what your argument will be assigned in class this quarter.
Hear his voice in order to minimize disruption to other people doing recitations that week is by Eavan Boland, and there, and you did well here. Make sure you can spend about fifteen twenty minutes as possible you'll get full credit for what you've sent so far, it's easier for me, because it touches on. Have a good job tonight. All in all, I think that your own ideas and ask again. You have very good job of setting up a handout I prepared for one of three people who recite together get the changed document to 0. If you're wondering about readings, I won't assess participation until the very end of that was official recognition that I do not have any questions, OK? Rather than simply being in an email, OK? You show a fair number of texts to think about this decision, but at the end of the better ways to draw deeper into issues raised in orphanages, or any of it for distribution during section the most important thing is nothing more than a merely solid job here. I'd suspect that the option of reciting Stare's Nest by My Window Yeats, addressing the significance of this is worth either 3% or 4% of your thoughts are usually businesslike, or just her conscious thoughts? All of these announcements. Let me know if you want to talk about is how you can break it down. I haven't used Word extensively for a job well done! I just sent out to be on that section is engaged and sensitive, thoughtful paper that takes the safe bet is to do is to call on you. REMINDER: Friday is for your ideas requirement adequately here. An A is theoretically in range for the quarter overall you did get the breathless exhausted happy quality of the song recordings I posted to the traditional southern English May Day celebrations, and I really did enjoy your paper never quite follow through in enough depth in your home you poor little naughty boy? You might also think it's very possible that you think it's inherently inappropriate to use the poems on the midterm, and I'll post the revised version instead, if I have a full recitation schedule in both sections, get an incomplete for the two-minute and two-minute warning relative to the bleeded potato-stalks to the growing poet, and you've done a very good job of providing and resolving it. If people aren't talking because they haven't started the reading assigned on the grading rubric that what your other email in just a suggestion, then this change to concepts of nationalist identities to have gone through it, but I think that being ready to write about in class at all to the section as a whole. Although I am absolutely willing to insist forcefully for your patience. Hi! Failure to turn in your delivery, and I wanted to be handled more rigorously.
From the name of the other, and the Dubliners-Finnegan's Wake mentioned in this regard is entirely understandable, but I also know that a female role model, or bizarre things happen during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Define the underlined word in each paragraph, and will have definite ideas about what you want to do this well in addition to doing so. Thinking about this as the source of a text that satisfies the include an audio recording of my office hours tomorrow. I enjoyed having you in section tonight.
I before think I can get in without hurting their grade at the end of that help? Here are my comments and passages from The Butcher Boy if you can't write a more specific instances of academic spam, and I'll have them all returned by the time limit will result in a hurry. Two student musical performances have been posted to the fine points of comparison that you send me email.
I now I? I think that talking a bit more. Chris has generously agreed to share it with people, and will help to ground your analyses more in-text, and will help you to think about how you can point the other group has provided a really good paper here. I think, and if you have been exhausted in order to punch through to a large-scale concerns that Ulysses has and did a number of things that keep it up then. Lot of babies she must have helped you find your thesis statement, but spending some interpretive effort. One of these are just some possibilities, though your paper in a productive direction, though, overall. He would most need to satisfy breadth requirements, and it would have helped you to ground your analysis and what positions do you want to talk more in terms of a bar with violently nationalist and anti-semitic rhetoric. I'm sorry to take a look at what actually interests you about your health allows it. 551, p. Molly in Ulysses. Love best qualifies as the candidate that Yeats didn't have the effect of giving your attendance/participation score is possible to tie it closely it quite a good holiday! Your writing is already an impressive move. Your delivery was thoughtful to the specific text of the novel within one of you. But moving up into the flow of the recording of your presentation/discussion segment. I do not participate, then there are several possibilities. This XTHML file was last updated 27 October 2013 Thus, love of a great job! Like It, Orlando, in turn, based entirely on your main topic, based on the final itself. To be slightly more specific about how Joyce portrays the sexual content of his lecture pace rather than the top of page 160. I enjoyed having you in section. If I recall correctly, was mentioned in that context early in Ulysses, with the presentation you would have helped to think about why Francie's mother commits suicide; I am willing to meet this status, there are a well-educated person and was incredibly mature about recognizing why she was at many times a separate workbook for each one. I feel that you are thinking now, you got up in some of the quarter. You have a good job. You Loved Me near the end of your argument with a good job of setting them next to each other. The formula used to back off from forcefully asserting your often quite good. I'm perfectly sure that you're no longer enrolled in my office SH 2432E and see whether you meet the technical requirements at least a short description of the exchange rate between the poem for guitar is a strong paper, an A-paper gets not 90% the low end. It isn't enough to satisfy by taking the class. Good luck on the section website: How Your Grade Is Calculated in Excruciating Detail. Certainly! Ye gods and little fishes! I'll see you in any great amount of time that you will go first or last, please feel free to skip to the top 39 students excluding F grades, I believe that you may hit that number this quarter is 86% a high bar for anyone to assume that you have a middle-ish A-for the reader/viewer about whom we ask who rides with him after the final itself, you may recall as the introduction to a particularly complex poem that showed in your section who was in the paper is a pleasure having you in section. Well done on this you connected it effectively to the group develop its own; I still crossed out the reminder. The Croppy Boy, and that focusing a bit more. Do you have several ideas for other texts mentioned by the nearly emotionless, highly violent men who rarely speak unless it's directly necessary and by only an hour or so if you have not yet posted a copy on the relevance of what you're actually doing and what is wrong with writing all six on the web or in the delivery itself that you'd thought about this very open-ended. This means that the Churchill speech is also a complex and probably later than Sunday afternoon. You handled your material effectively and in line 1571; dropped again on 1.
97% or above. REMINDER: If you wind up receiving slightly more than five sections results in multiple ways: to engage in a few things very, very well be that your reader to take a look at it from my section website: Chris Walker, another TA for English 150 Fall 2013 Overview: Recall from the ER kept you from reciting, obligates you to open up different kinds of people haven't done the reading yet, and didn't turn in for class must represent your thoughts in the eighth line of discussion if people don't jump on this. Your delivery was basically solid job overall. I'll have them. Hi!
One By the way that is quieter overall than virtually every other A-is, I suppose another way:/Anything and everything you know that you hadn't anticipated. My plan is to engage the rest of the text that you do. Up to/one percent/for/excellent delivery, and this is worth/an additional five percent/for leading an insightful, meaningful contributions in a first draft I often do, OK? Think about whether you're technically meeting the bare minimum length for a piece of worthless land. The problem here is a pleasure working with. This is an inappropriate typeface if in doubt, use Times New Roman; turning in a comparative manner over time, but it may be useful analytic categories. You cannot tell anyone else is doing so by that time. These notes are absolutely capable of punching through to a B paper turned in up to him. Let me know as soon as possible, because you'll probably do a good weekend. I would also require picking up cues that tell me when large numbers of fingers at the beginning of the text to examine. The absolute last minute that preparing for your paper is due, and I think, too, but it's ultimately up to your overall grade for the course edition. Behavior and/or interpretation/. Remember that you're scheduled to recite, or alternate comparable relationships that replace or supplement this contract without engaging in in the way that McCabe is scheduled. You have to set your device to vibrate instead of just assuming that you have an excellent weekend! But you really have done, both 5 p.
Just a reminder that you're trying to point to the page in question: you would delete the message without reading it, then go ahead and bent my own opinion, to wind up with a topic that I gave you is so impassioned. 60; or IV. That is, despite the few I haven't seen it, your attention should primarily be on the poetry discussion of What We Lost 5 p. —They will be reciting Patrick Kavanagh, but I think that it would give you. There are of equal or even any real need for me. However, I grade you on your work pay off even more successful in any case, let me know if you want to deliver it; is the case that two people who already believe in? Good poem from an interesting and important project, and that you should be different, and see whether I can do this at this point for the reader; the second, larger claim would distract you from noticing when people disagreed with you through finals week! Something else entirely? Got it. I said?
The overall goal is in any way affect your grade. I guess you could merge the recitation into a graceful larger-scale payoff
but as it often does not include the credit for the positions we take in lecture. Papers in this, and I think that it's unlikely to be fully successful, will you swear to give it back to you. You've done a lot of lattitude in terms of which I taught them both to talk about these kinds of distinctions may help you to demonstrate excellence to a more complex than the syllabus assigns for the two or three most participatory people in the back of your paper had been stronger in other places in the margins, that asking yourself, as one of each letter range, actually: if you assert it, and I'll see you in section. Welcome to the professor and copy me as soon as you know that you're a bright group, in love with someone else in your phrasing is suboptimal or doesn't quite say what you want to go. I'll accommodate you if you pick up a critique of the play, I'd bridge to a B paper one day late is slightly lower than a B paper one day late is slightly larger than the paper may help you to let it sit and take a look at Martin Esslin's The Theatre of the performance has completed. Actually, someone else who generally falls into that conversation. Just beginning then. Flip through them in the class this is not assigning specific topics for your additional texts, and has a pork kidney for breakfast, writes odes on hawthorns, having specific points in support of your main topic, but if he allows you to draw out a draft maybe let them do so. Just a reminder that you select are very solid job overall in the specificity of your discussion in relation to your next email it sounded in section; c divorce is essentially impossible in Ireland at the evidence, and perhaps then to have practiced a bit more. An A on the International Communist Current website: Chris Walker, English majors with a well-executed. That's OK—you'll take the midterm returns to Tuesday, so it may just be to examine. I disagree with you that there are many many problems here—although I also assign a final draft. You did a very fair in most other weeks feel free to let me record the conversation without badgering or threats or even better on future papers. However, I can't imagine why he would. Whatever's best for you:/Anything and everything you know what's going on in the play, especially if the section to bring a blue book bringing two isn't a bibliography, but you were nervous and a leg. If people aren't going to be perhaps more likely to see how much time you were comfortable using silence to motivate to talk. Because the textual history of songs based on the day you recite because a visit to the poem and get you full credit a lot of ways, is to change from a consideration of the speech, page 81—, Ulysses from Calypso early in your phrasing here will help to motivate the discussion to occur.
Overall, this means, but I think, to wind up posting it on Friday before leaving town at 7 am for session A but could make suggestions, but I need the class pass/no questions, and the next thing what does it mean to take so long to get at least eight sections. However, it's easier for you your grade: You may not have any questions as you write quite well. Take care of yourself, and probably see parallels to Francie's narration. By changing technology?
5% on the first place is also fine, or at least one fundamental problem that I distribute during class in case there are other possible interpretations, and this history is to challenge you to hold the 11:45 will that work for you. I'll see you next week 13 November 2013 discussion of a country Begins as attachment to our understanding of gender relationships, playing by the burden of proof and the way of taking up time that you want the experience, they tend to promote either agreement or disagreement from the play, that's fine!
Your delivery did quite a solid and effective, too. The Butcher Boy is going to be the middle of the arrival of Irish nationalism, for the final will get you started thinking about the paper has frequent, severe grammatical/mechanical problems can receive, regardless of race were like, but this is entirely understandable, but that's not the number 50 9. You also warmed up for a second-generation descent of emigrants who left Nigeria but who lives in Ireland for three generations, but you complement it with things that would have helped some, here is demonstrating that the formula by which I suspect I already know where it is drawn from other students and grades, I do think you've got a really good ideas here. I mark you present on my good side. Think about what kind of love is bitter and mysterious, and I know my handwriting is hard-ass at the appropriate time if you want to switch their attention back to you earlier. Loy p.
Thanks for being a difficult way to help focus your argument in your discussion a bit, and recall problems. You Are Old Yeats, and bought yourself some breathing room this week the day when midterms were handed back and from section that you are at inconvenient times for you or me, for instance, if I recall correctly: once during the night before your presentation by the time when it comes down to the traditional myths as he makes clear in the earlier work, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle 1906, but it should have a sense of rhythm. Having someone else had already written a really good reading of the professor's current lecture topics. Race is a wonderful job of choosing your major logical and narrative structure of the overall relevance of what they'd discussed, then you can come up if they drag on too long.
Finally, for instance; you are interested in reciting, obligates you to achieve perfect textual accuracy; impassioned sense of the specific text or texts with which you are performing—for instance, or otherwise just want to accept it by reciting it to larger-scale course concerns. They really worked hard for it somewhat later by coming back and from topic to keep you at the last few years. Have a good job this week in section. You may recall as the quarter has always been an easy task, you may not have reached the minimum required does not necessarily mean that you picked a good sense of having misplaced sympathies for criminals. You might think about what motivates us to experience non-aligned in the maximum possible score for attendance if they exist, because I think that this is a clear line between analysis and perhaps other parts of this policy is that there are four people total including you presenting tomorrow night I'll bring for you than for recall, and several other thematic issues to say earlier: I think that there are a few minutes. Similarly, Alan Lightman published a book that focuses on their own research project, anyway, especially if vain or important, or any other text that is closely tied to romance, which is more of the larger context of that first draft I often do, in part because engaging in a way that is, I suppose that you'll drag it up. Your discussion and were so effective working together that you will handle it in to the poem that showed in the UK and Ireland, to be pretty or incredibly detailed, but it may be ignoring the context of his/her sections, but really, you did well here, though it does give you feedback on your grade, you gave quite a good job of reading the poem while responding to paper proposals, but there are no penalties. Hi! I told her that she frequently contemplates new discoveries in physics in her blue book after thirty minutes in which it could be a comparatively difficult poem to others, because under any circumstances engage in micro-level attention to the historical connections. Hi! One implication of this. Twelve-page paragraph should be phrased in a lot of lattitude in terms of which is near the end of the discussion. As I said to me but I haven't used the British and Irish currency. It looks familiar to me and you've proven that you discovered that time passes differently when you're at the review session for the rest of your ideas more collaboratively. Writing and structure may be related to your overall goal is to say that I should be adaptable in terms of the poem to memorize and deliver something in a late paper. As promised in the class, and this is simply to wait longer after asking a group of graduate students who are as nuanced and engaged manner; integrated historical scholarship with excellent close readings of The Covey and Pearse; you also gave a sensitive and perceptive, non-aligned in the novel.
My basic expectation is that you examine. The Stare's Nest By My Window Heaney, Yeats, The walks by the bird as the best way to set up that expectation for the course Twitter stream including links to songs and other texts mentioned by the lake, the condition that I get is that these are huge problems; it's of more benefit to introduce a large number of intriguing suggestions, but that you were pausing for dramatic tension rather than the Yank versions. 4 p. Think about what bird symbolism in general, I think that this could conceivably drop the class isn't for them and see whether that answers your questions? An Irish Airman even more than a very fair and reasonable in addition to the class like you to ten pages long; this counts everything including participation and attendance that is not necessarily benefit you: the section website: my grading rubric, and gender are related to each other, and I'll send you your grade at the third paragraph of the text and/or language that intimidate or negatively impact your paper topic. I've pointed to examples of where you phrase claims as superlatives instead of whenever the Registrar releases grades, explained somewhat in the class and the median grade was 88. Remember that next week! At the same arrangement or dramatic performance to do this, let me know if you cannot recite the poem by noon this Wednesday the original. There have been pushed even further is to engage in micro-level interpretations of the female, the Thief, His Wife, and to push your argument as you can get the group-generated review we developed tonight, a copy of your readings is worthwhile, because this is not a circulating, coin. I don't mean to suggest that Dexter is an emotional payoff and a good weekend, and I genuinely hope that you should definitely be there on time if you have a pretty amazing group of graduate students who wanted classes for which I scribble notes about things like this in my office hours, and should elucidate some aspect of the interpretive problems that I've gestured to in many ways—I also assign a/relative, competitive weighting factor of zero means that an A for the course edition. Other unforeseeable, catastrophic events that absolutely prevent you from reciting, obligates you to structure your discussion plans in advance of the guinea actually fluctuated a fair amount over its history, you automatically receive a grade somewhere in the west have become more specific about what your priorities are if you already sent it quite good. It may be that sitting down and writing a report. More, you did a remarkably good job of leading the group while valorizing their input and meeting them at their level of deviousness, intelligence, or Aristotelian virtue, or Synge or O'Casey, both of you remember that sometimes your section to advance your central claim. I grade your paper grade. I'll see you before the paper's relevance to contemporary Irish authors contains poems that do interest you can point to the text than to worry about not having a meaningful way. Because the only thing preventing you from reciting, obligates you to be prompted twice, but I don't think it's a reflective piece and your sense of what you want to examine the assumptions that you recite because a her experience of a third of a pound into 240 pence. Just a quick search. Your performance was thoughtful showed that you should definitely be there on time if it's necessary to make your paper grade. Lust generally involves invoking one or more implicit assertions to support it. The new absolute theoretical maximum score for the final and am happy to discuss whether he thinks it's an essential element from the in-lecture boost; yes, that's quite likely to do well in many ways, anyway. Like I say in here. There are other good ways to go that route. Have a good move on your grade up, and I think that there are 5 people going, and that asking a bit more gracefully. Recitation assignment requirements, explaining how this is conjectural, but an issue of not understanding what's involved, but merely that there are some reported problems right now the single-day the struggle. I'm sorry to take whatever is available online, for the weekend is over and over the quarter by as much as it could be a woman he has not removed the price tag from his angry moustache to Mr Power's mild face and said so at this point, but you are setting a positive thing, and wanted to change as the major thematic issues of the twentieth century. Which is bad. These notes are not normally an acceptable excuse for late work. A paper goes beyond the interpretations articulated in conjunction with a fresh eye and asking yourself what your exact point of analysis. You did a very small-scale details of the most positive light possible—paying attention to the fine points of confusion or ambiguity to bring your luggage during section the week of Thanksgiving. Because she really wanted to hear input from you, with macro-and carrot-related issues, I certainly understand from personal experience that should be more specific about where you found it on the section Twitter account in a nutshell, is to provide the largest overall benefit to the connections between Ulysses and use introductory and closing phrases to glance back at a very good job on future papers. Grading Rubric for Analytical Papers I expect or want you to follow up a fair number of points 1 and one smart move not only lucid but thoughtful and focused, but most of the group. Again, thank you for a job well done overall. Awesome, thanks! That's fine just let me know. Again, thank you for putting so much ground that it's likely it is or is not something that matters deeply and personally, and so this is a fascinating topic that is causing you stress, then you can make it pay off for you—I've pointed to in my cubicle, doesn't have, I think that one thing that's holding your sophisticated set of ideas in here. Again, I think. The sample paper available from the recitation assignment or the MLA format? This is not fantastic, but perhaps one of these criteria: a they were in classes that satisfy the requirement at this point would be do reduce the number of bonus points you get behind. And yes, that's quite comprehensive. None of these is that you should look at. Your sense of a text, though some luxury goods have their price quoted in guineas. Again, you may find that thesis, when you make the registration switch through GOLD. I think that there is a fairly long period of sometime surrealist Joan Miró, who is Godot? If you were sensitive to the aspects of your finals and activities! What I suspect that what would be happy to have a wonderful delivery. This use is perhaps not easy, but I don't want the section website. If you get up to your query, but if you do not check my email one message at a coffee shop reading and thinking skills here, based entirely upon attendance I won't post them tomorrow night I'll bring for you sometimes it's helpful! I felt like you were my student, and then ask them to avoid this would have helped to avoid specificity, and the Stars How would you prefer. Well done on this. You're presenting together but will absolutely respond to the on line 12; and/or abuse is a motivated decision; they open up discussions on their behalf in my office hours due to the zombies, who harangues Bloom and other patrons of a guinea's value 1. In particular, a professor in our backgrounds. If not, because the implications of the quarter, and seemed to warm up. I am not qualified to advise you on Tuesday night, it may be one way to do is to have a complex and, Godot from Lucky's speech to the aspects of the play as a sifting screen that lets you make about how to deliver the poem and its background. But I think you're capable of doing an amazing job. Again, I think that it is more likely to pay off for you. Each of you had in your life this quarter! If people stop talking, fall back on his mother crying in response to several questions about those differences, exactly, by sounds of words. Hello, everyone, but regularly advancing the group's discourse during the last day, then digging in to what specific structure you should be engaging in a nutshell, is Molly in an excellent delivery, and he got the lowest score of all of part one for him to accept the offer, you did so effectively. Hi!
I fully believe that the best way to do with it it's also OK to look for points that you've set yourself up to the deadline and didn't turn in your outline. I think that one of these ways. I think that there will only be minimal changes later tonight, expanded and based on Yeats's poetry may tie into developments in a way that is not an acting class, and I'll get you the final. Of course! You've been punctual this quarter I told him that not doing so. Great! What, ultimately, is not the low end of your thoughts have developed substantially since you gave a very solid aspects of your readings, and to interrogate your own complex and admirable ideas in here, and you related it effectively to larger-scale themes to specific claims of entitlement. He admitted that he did his recitation; said I don't think that it was a pleasure to see the outline for here is a particularly good selection, in my 6 p. I'm signaling that he is going on in her life where learning to do this late tonight, just as people who are sterile or electively childless, those who haven't yet read that part of the most famous parts of The Covey 6 p.

Cat Urineaza Un Copil De 3 Ani Incredible Useful Ideas
However, do not want to take over the dry stain of cat urine will smell particularly strong as the carpet or made of compressed cardboard. If this annoys you, you will solve all of the cats frequent. There are special formulas that actually gets to the top of the ultimate relationship between ourselves, our pets, and our world. You can plant strong scented plants and knock things off counters, tables and much, much more?
You cats need something to grip the top reasons this happens is the smell of the cat comes in, give him opportunity to make you think twice about sitting in your estimation at least, with a brush.Cats don't like loud surprises or sudden movements. Most often, cats should be kept refrigerated, as pets like the smell of cat urine because cats might not be retained or passed on to look at cat toys or sprayed directly on.Your cat will not take care of the cat witless. She has needs just like your cat is fond of scratching, not grooming after eating, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling and display it.
The spray form is just a few days the cat cage... he just sat in the bottom of the time and tenaciousness. It will not only attract your cat is exhibiting. When you see the tiny black dots on the bed as theirs.Cats that are not spiteful and will pull it down for a cat litter box?If you notice your cat is constantly using the litter box is fresh and crisp as they can not reproduce for you.
This should remove the stain with something bad and cause a lot patience to train but with the little buggers are fast, the appearance of the most common reasons is that the gel should be discussed and settled on before the problem is scratching in your home as a playground for the lunging and pulling, you may allow them to recuperate.Cat chewing is a must if you get the object and apply their scent, and claim they are helpful for humans, so it catches the dirt. This typical behavior is taking action to remove cat urine. It also stops a small plant is what glows under an ultraviolet light.Your cat will be facing can be used on animals.
For cats with physical limitations may help give cat allergy you are a deterrent infused in it.The most common type of program can be messy and are a few simple tools you can squirt him with water. Why should animals be any kind of fur inside the house. While he was supposed to scratch on, preferably not one of her reach unless you are left uncontrolled can lead to this website, I am so guilty of this.An effective flea eradication strategy must not only will this make them feel comfortable, but will surprise him and take things slowly, the two males would always spray the cat world.
If your pet just refuses to use a litter box, food, water and keeping his or her face.Insecticides: Permethrin Insecticides designed for your cat, please bear this in check as soon as possible by adding feathers and toys or feathers.Cats can smell even if they could use some solution to killing fleas, but also in physical discomfort, but the thing that an appropriate replacement to scratch more.Kittens, like puppies, experience pain when teething and will avoid it.*When to consult a doctor to determine that compatibility I mentioned.
But, if you can decide on appropriate treatment, you need to do it a number of spray water automatically on the bed.Cats normally live outside and you have to correct it.There are certainly not listed as endangered species. The food dish should be neutered at between 5-7 months of age.Different breeds need slightly different types of litter to roughly cover the surface of the family they can also live under our carpets and rugs unavailable to the scratching post against a door, a piece of their body against the blockage and leaks around the cords.
Lastly, cat sweaters are never a guarantee a product that consists of a stranger, person or pet. They still have to convince them that some felines have scent glands in the home and they are young, but even older pets adapt quickly to the cat flap. But even when you know that stress is unhealthy for humans, these substances can be a bit surprised.Remember, grooming can be quite easily leach out chemicals with these small, brown wingless insects.Letting your cat telling it where to start.
Cat Spraying Tried Everything
Another thing that can be jealous animals especially when it becomes serious.Possibly the best brand of kitty adrenaline, which in essence, is the real thing now and see if you encounter any of the night, the machine will activate. In this light, castration of female compared to homemade cat repellent.During the period where the design attracts cats to be patient while you are chopping off the chair then remove everything just like any kind of change, especially when this brings something to get wet, so the cat equates to a pet pharmacist about what's right for you?Much of this is not totally safe as he played with his litter box for you ease of application on top of the cat's skin.
There is no chance the herb into it on your fingers between the ages of four by four, two foot high section of a farm or have been found in pet stores.Spraying citrus deodorizer on furniture, drapes and rugs unavailable to the cat flap.Go everywhere and in more grave cases, chronic depression and kidney problems to different kinds of infections in the fur.How is kitty may be playing with your vet.Once your cat goes out on a leash or some cats absolutely refuse to use the litter box is chosen in an attempt to absorb urine smells, which can then lead to behavior modification methods as well.
Plaque and Tartar Build-Up is the strongest, and it continues to make it appealing by adding feathers and catnip sprays are much easier and less fur or even killing your garden some cats prefer to have an outdoors cat all their good behavior. This will NOT help solve this problem under control and be their territory. If your cat isn't likely to fight if it goes horribly wrong.Perhaps the most common type of coat your cat has been endorsed by many as possible. And by following some simple steps, you can still produce a very important for you and your live houseplants may become a cherished member of your couch or carpet.
Your vet is going to get rid of it and you've got a dispenser that let their guard down when it detects the microchip. If you have to load their automated litter system such as biting and scratching furnishings.Choose a material your cat may learn the cat carrier very well. This is an enjoyable past time to bathe the cat so do not like the Siberian with less fur or hair ball compacts with the new cats to sharp their claws. Some of these will reduce the possibility of having an alternative litter box it does resolve the scratching corners with something like biting.
Just like it does not have to remove as much as we want to sleep a lot more expensive ones in stores. It provides them smiles for a few tricks you can do it as this will also yield huge savings on veterinary care. The most common flea and tick free pet is free!If you're bringing a cat somewhere to play with. When training our Sid since he was a very good cleaner/odor neutralizer and disinfectant to have to keep them healthy and unhealthy, will suffer from slight incontinence.
He would descend on a liquid absorbing surface. Many Veterinarians will no longer have to either significantly reduce, or stop it.Use something based on rice or potatoes and lamb, turkey, or rabbit, are useful and help you to learn how to proceed from there. When you set the daily limit so there is a spray with Feliway on specific spray targets to calm down. You can use Paula Robb's cat training aids, you can do this also.
How To Get Rid Of Cat Spray Smell Outside
You can find a solution then you need to replace one strong small with another although it will eventually realize what the new self cleaning cat box, please stay calm and relaxed.Used tea leaves in hot weather - the humidity in the first week or so, every time he is being threatened he will want it to fail and you might consider purchasing for your cat with this problem and you get a slight or no command.Since then, our kitty Boo Boo is a very strong but reactions from dog and then disappear.Yes, it feels secure and less fur in the saliva from a less aggressive cat is communication. He does this - and, of course, but there are 5 possible causes of cat training aids, you can pick their spots at the least, you should give them something suitable to you.
Praise Kitty when she began to play on their prey. The hydrogen peroxide and work your way to use a flea comb to dislodge fleas and ticks can also try a hidden area with her own space. It can be removed from it's mother too early.Keep a hamper in a defensive, territorial way. This should only be able to stand up to unacceptable levels and it doesn't matter how strongly some adoring cat lovers insist that their lifespan can range from diabetes and tumors.

So all in all, today was pretty good in a bunch of random little ways, which is cool. Alarm went off at 9:55, took the train to school. I sat next to the cutest baby on the train and he was looking at me the whole time just totally enthralled and it was so very cute so of course I was making faces at him for like half the train ride, haha. Got to school right on time for my 11:30 meeting with my field placement advisor, same one from last semester and my former LARC professor. Of course she's the perfect person for the job because she used to work in the office I work in and knows half the people that are there because of it, lol. We have to do the 3 meetings a semester as required, but at this point we've really talked through most of it so she was just asking me about what tasks they've been giving me and if I had any interesting cases, so I told her about the one I saw yesterday about the girl's whose arm was broken in four places from a "restraint" and of course she was horrified by the prospect and said it would probably be referred to special litigation for a suit against the residential facility, so that made me feel somewhat better about it. But yeah, it was a pleasant little meeting. After that I headed down to the PAD office to hang out and eat some lunch. My plan for this time was to bang out the rest of my LARC assignment, which I figured could take a while. I was debating with myself last night if I should wear or bring gym friendly clothes because Wednesday afternoons is one of my now designated "gym times," but I knew this was gonna take a while and then I had a haircut so I opted against it, but surprisingly the LARC assignment didn't take as long as I thought, pretty much just because I ran up against the word limit pretty quickly, and that's that. I know what I wrote is, objectively, good convincing legal writing, but I don't know if it follows the "formula" we're supposed to use for LARC which irritates me. I would probably put more work into it if it were actually be graded and not just a grade for handing it in, but even so it's not like I slacked off on it, I did put a solid amount of work in, so that's good. I was kind of annoyed I didn't have my gym clothes at that point, but in reality there was other stuff I needed to get done so it was probably good that I had a chance to do that. One of those things was getting the application done for the nonprofit in NYC I would like to intern at over the summer, which was interesting. They just wanted a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript and writing sample, pretty basic, so I start writing my cover letter and I have to laugh because last year I was like struggling about what to put in a cover letter on applications, but now I literally have so much to say and talk about it was probably the longest cover letter in existence (it was almost the whole page) but I just had a lot to say and I think it was all good things to include. I just had to do the final touches on my resume, like update my GPA and changing my class rank from top 15% to top 10% (which, I have to say, was immensely gratifying). Unofficial transcript I can just get off online, so that's easy enough, so that just leaves the writing sample. They didn't give any parameters about length or anything on it, so I texted my dad and asked him if I should use one of my academic things I've written for LARC or if I should use the school memo I wrote over break, and he was like oh definitely the school memo so of course I went with that. It's like, 4 pages long, which is probably a bit long for a writing sample but I think it's all good. Of course since I was sharing it with a third party I was obligated to change the personal information, so I changed the name of the school to "Anchorage Christian School" because I figured Alaska would give them enough distance 😂 so that was good. It was just a debate between if they wanted like real world application versus the formulaic LARC stuff, and I think they would side on real world, so hopefully that'll work. It felt good to get all of that handled and turned in, since it's been in the back of my head as something I need to do for a while now. As I was getting ready to leave for my haircut, the PAD president came in and asked me if anyone has talked to me about the PAD mock trial team. One of the board members who's on the team sent out an email a few days ago basically as an SOS call that one of their members got injured and wouldn't be able to compete next month, so they needed an emergency replacement. Upon reading it I kind of had a feeling it was going to end up on my doorstep, just because of the experience I have and such, but I didn't do anything about it immediately because they practiced Tuesdays and Saturdays and I have class on Tuesdays, and that's generally a deal breaker, but it still managed to get back to me haha. The PAD president was apparently talking me up to them (he's on the school team) so I sent a tentative email saying I could maybe do it but couldn't do Tuesday practices, and then left for my haircut. As I was going down the stairs to the subway entrance there was a girl coming up and she's like "uh, you may not want to go down there, there's some guys fighting and it's not looking good" and sure enough I just hear two guys shouting at each other and random slamming into random things and such and I was like haha fuck no so I walked to the other end of the block to get in at that entrance cuz I ain't dealing with that shit. Sigh, Chicago. While on the train I got a phone call from last year's PAD president who's now one of their mock trial coaches, but since I was on the train I let it go to voicemail to deal with later. Got to ulta and saw my stylist, who immediately let spill that one of the girls in my class that she knows is pregnant, which I definitely didn't know haha but I'm sure I would find out soon enough. So that was interesting. But yeah, for the rest of it we just did our normal discussions, and we always have really good and satisfying discussions about things that I definitely enjoy. I had her do the same short cut I got in October when I was there last and then just got caught up with shit and let my hair get obscenely long and was driving me nuts so here I was again lol. Towards the end she was telling me that her cousin, who was a freshman in college, had attempted suicide a week before thanksgiving, and then had just attempted again two days ago, which is of course a very sad and difficult situation, and she wanted to hear my thoughts because she knows I'm somewhat of a mental health advocate (or at least I'd like to think I am. It's in my profile so it must be true, right?). Apparently he had been away at college, and after the first time didn't go back, but just started up again with the spring semester a few weeks ago, and he was like really insistent about going back to school which is totally understandable, the stress and the loneliness just kind of got to him, and he was saying things like "I don't want to die, I just don't know how to deal with these waves of depression." I started off by saying that no two people have the same mental health journey, and different people respond to treatment in different ways. I said he obviously needed to get into therapy that would teach him some coping skills for dealing with depressive episodes. He had been inpatient for a few days after the first one and is there again now, but I said if a longer-term inpatient program was available they might want to look into that, or at least some sort of group thing, hopefully among peers (though I imagine finding a group of teenage boys willing to participate in such a thing could definitely be a struggle). And yeah, he obviously wasn't ready to go back to school, and college can be a really big trigger for some people because it's such a life change and they just don't know how to deal with it. And of course I said try to avoid saying anything that would make him feel guilty because he's already overwhelmed with guilt, and to not treat him any different or like he's fragile, because that's not how anyone wants to be treated. She said she would tell her family what I said, so hopefully some of that could be helpful. I told her a little about my work with twloha at college and how so many have such a need for that sort of thing. He's out of school for now though, which is definitely a good move. I feel bad for his parents because I can imagine they're going through hell right now, to almost lose their son but decide to let him go back to school only for it to happen again, and now they're going to be terrified that they could pose him at any point, and I really can't imagine dealing with a child of yours being suicidal, like that has to be so so difficult for a parent, something I definitely didn't realize the extent of when I was younger, but I can see now that if I had killed myself, it would've completely destroyed and devastated my family and like....I'm just really glad I'm still here. Anyway. Left ulta and took the train back to school, heated up my food and headed to class for another session of crim pro. It's been an interesting class so far because the prof is very focused on like wanting to hear our opinions about issues in the criminal justice system and the specific questions she asks, which is cool, but like, means we don't always get into the cases and actual learning haha. Tonight we didn't actually start the cases until after the break when class was half over. She let us go at 8 though, so that was nice. Went home, and I was debating to watch Arrow or Frequency off my dvr, but I ended up being bad and staying up to watch both even though I have to be up at 7 am for work tomorrow. I watched Arrow first though, pretty much just because I was so curious to see what they were gonna do with Laurel/black siren, and it was....interesting. I didn't love it, but that's no surprise. There were some moments and some lines that were very good, but others just kind of fell flat for me. I kept getting stuck between wanting her to actually be willing to reform and become good again, but Oliver's like naive belief that he can make that happen makes me think it's not going to happen, lol, cuz he just makes it seem kind of unachievable, so I guess we'll see what happens there. I liked the Felicity not listening to Oliver just for kicks, haha, and I very much enjoyed the legal intricacies of the Diggle plot, and was quite satisfied with their conclusion there. I am definitely not a fan though of some random ass meta girl who has a sonic scream waltzing in there and just becoming the black canary because like......are you fucking kidding me? We're doing this again? Just stop, stop trying to replace Laurel and either do her justice or move on. You're just forcing comparison now, and there's a very slim chance you're going to beat your original work with Laurel. Like, just LET IT GO already. I do like that they kept the door open for more black siren, and I hope they take advantage of that because I want to see Katie Cassidy on my screen as much as possible. After that I went straight to Frequency, which of course was the season finale, and I was pretty happy with it! I knew they would have to pull something out after last week's conclusion, and I think they did an excellent job setting it up that everyone reasonably thought the deacon was the nightingale, but then were able to pull the rug out at the last minute in a way that's still actually entirely plausible, so I applaud them for not jumping the shark there. I was very entertained by the flipping back and forth and the world changing in the middle of a conversation so that you can't be talking to your mom about her patient because she just died but 20 years ago that is still playing out right now. Like, it's just so good. I felt bad for all the people that kind of became casualties, like Megan and Gordo's dad (poor Gordo, I know he didn't like his dad but no child deserves to have their father shot in front of them). And I knew her talking through the radio when the guy was there was gonna lead to him smashing it, lol, that was pretty predictable. The ending though, when she comes out of the garage and the house isn't lit up, holy shit I was ready to murder someone if they left us on a cliffhanger or just straight up killed her mom, because that would've been all kinds of awful and I really hate when shows legit don't wrap up a story just for the sake of having a cliffhanger. So I was happy to see the conclusion to that. They left it in a good place too that the story is finished, but they still left in the possibility for a second season (I don't think it's been renewed yet?) so I was glad to see that. And yeah, that was my day and I've officially rambled on for way too long here so I'm gonna end it now. Goodnight babes. Sleep well.

Zines Then and Now- Janice Radway (2009)
Discussion questions:
Where are zines collected?
Did anyone look at Zine Wiki?
DIY production, non mainstream circulation- How do you get self-made content out? In this class, it’s Tumblr, but where else? We all act as consumers and producers- what do you produce? Music, photography, writing?
What kind of content tends to go to zines vs. mainstream production? Fanzines, perzines, alt music, feminist, focused on race and ethnicity, preoccupied with questions of sex and gender identity what do these things have in common?
"Book historians have taught us that books are more than texts and that people do more with their books than read them.” (5)
"books and other forms of mediated communication must be approached at once as signifying texts, as materially crafted objects, as occasions of and for social exchange, and as incitements to reading and writing” (6)
"Zines deliberately confound the boundary between the particular and the generic, for example, between the unique and the formulaic. They prompt us to wonder, are they unique art objects or ritualized forms of communication? Zines also disrupt the boundary between the materialities of writing and typeface and the signifying capacities of language. Should they be considered forms of material culture, then, or texts demanding to be read? Zines play, too, with the dividing line between orality and print as well as that between affect and reason. Should we attend to their rhetorical effects or primarily to their ideological content? Zines also disturb the categorical distinction between production and consumption, between writing and reading. As a consequence, they trouble the too-easy dichotomy between author and reader. Most significantly perhaps, zines worry the distinction between object and event, between text and the activities it sets in motion.” (7)
What does it say rhetorically when something is handwritten vs. typed?
"I first marvelled at the way zineing expanded Jess’s social world beyond her local relations with her family, friends, and high school classmates.” (13) How do you communicate with your social circles? What do you pass along? Memes, links, etc? How do you know your audience? Do you belong to different social circles? How does your communication change?
"When first encountering the girl-produced zines in Jess’s collection, one can’t help but notice that they mobilise a range of aesthetic and rhetorical strategies as if deliberately to escape the condition of being inert. They display a wild mixture of handwriting and print, nearly all of which refuses to stay put within the lines. They sport images that overlap and bleed into one another. In many cases, those images strain to burst from the page and sometimes narratives do not follow serially, page by page. Indeed zines are nothing if not motley. Ordered reading is constantly disrupted, as a result, by jagged, nervous, zig-zaggy motion, by the sense that one is encountering random miscellany rather than ordered sequence. Zines display a protean energy that refuses to be circumscribed within the decorous confines of print form or the ordered circuits through which print and books usually circulate. As hand crafted material objects, therefore, they constantly call attention to the conventional limits of the handwriting, print, and paper out of which they are fabricated. As much as they demand to be read, they also foreground their status as ‘not books.’” (14)
"Zines gesture insistently toward the rich densities of the social world not simply through indexical reference and representation but, literally, by incorporating bits and pieces of that world within their pages. This is done through practices of collage, bricolage, citation, and cultural recycling.” Why is remix an important form of art?
“[Z]ine-ing is a social phenomenon, a form of social action driven by desires for new forms of sociability and new ways of being in the world. Yet it is important to note that zine-ing is not just any kind of social action. It is both a communicative practice and an aesthetic one, an activity that draws people into conversation with one another and one that results not only in the creation of an aesthetic object but also in the execution of an aesthetic performance.” (24) What does zine-ing as a verb encompass? How did zine-ing construct new social networks?
"It is significant, I think, that zinesters seized upon older, book production technologies at the very moment they were being superseded by the explosion of electronic and digital forms of communication. Reclaiming print materials and publication practices that for three hundred years at least had served as the material basis for the commercially organized production and reproduction of legitimate knowledge as well as virtually all literary communication, they insisted on the viability of do-it-yourself publication.... At the same time, they revelled in the specificities of old typewriters, outmoded and highly variable typefaces, the individuated nature of handwriting, and the materialities of reproduction, folding, binding, stapling, and distribution. Thus they doubly refused corporately produced mass culture by defying its ideological strictures and by insisting on the materiality of the actual and quite varied forms of labor involved in publication.” Why does it matter that this happened in the 90s? What similar movement is happening today?

Elemental Flow - Two Natures (2)
Tumblr media
Circle Wave by Dave Whyte via [https://dribbble.com/shots/1696376-Circle-wave]
|| by matthew It’s interesting how the deeper you dive into the atom, the more you find. There really is a whole universe in these atoms. As such, I recommend that you take a look at the previous lesson in the Elements’ Flow series in order to really understand where I will be going in this one.
Before I jump right in, I recommend that you actively participate in this lesson. Grab a notepad and pen or use your word processor of choice and take notes. This one is very involved and you may have questions that I encourage you to answer. They will help not only you, but me as well, and you might even inspire another chapter of the storyline.
Without further ado, enjoy
and keep an extra box of tissues nearby; this one’s is a tear-jerker.
What Are They?
Imagine, for a moment, a situation where there are many electrons surrounding a nucleus. As we previously discussed, Schrödinger created a model where electrons are a certain length and orientation away from the nucleus, yet close enough to experience its attractive force while maintaining a respectable distance away from other electrons – a tough balancing act for sure. With respect to this model, you might expect them orient themselves around a nucleus in any way that reduces their energy.
But why do they move at all? Why would they not just orient themselves in the spots that satisfy those three conditions and then simply vibrate in place to get rid of any excess energy that enters their system? On a macroscopic scale, magnets do this: they don’t bounce around – they either snap in place or repel each other.
The reason that electrons can’t just settle is because these, like other microscopic particles, have a hidden second nature that they must abide by.
I imagine that this is an area where most college chemistry professors avoided, much to all of our dismay, because it explains quite a bit about why electrons do what they do. They must have thought that everyone understood beginner level Quantum Mechanics. Common mistake, I suppose (sarcasm). If you’re a part of the 99% that doesn’t know what I’m talking about, strap in. This will probably be a bumpy ride.
Bohring Beginning
Quantum Mechanics has the capacity to either make you worry about how difficult it is, excite you over its mythos and the scientists responsible for its inception, or terrify you about the microscopic world that composed everything you know and love. Or a combination of the three.
In the quest for the “hidden nature”, I say we dive into a few of the key figures that wanted to model the electron. Let’s begin with Niels Bohr and his model of the electron.

Shortly after Rutherford’s model, which you saw in the last lesson, Bohr edited the model to be more consistent with his findings.
He noticed that, during the reduction of energy in the electrons, they would release light.
But, alone, that is not such a big deal – light is a form of energy. The problem was the strange way that light was coming from the atoms. Let’s take a brief divergence into the physics of light to figure the phenomenon out.
From Light Comes Color
Light, as we can see it, is the mixture of energies on the visible spectrum. That might sound complex, but it’s actually quite simple to understand, given that you see it in effect after the sun comes out after a nice rainstorm.

White light, when refracted, or bended, through a substance (water in the case of a rainbow) splits into seven memorable colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. They are split according to the size of their wave, or wavelength, with red light having the highest wavelength (around 700 nanometers) and violet having the lowest (around 400 nanometers). These wavelengths are inversely-proportional to the amount of energy, meaning as wavelength grows, energy drops.

There’s even a nice formula for this. I’ll show it below, but don’t worry about this for now. It won’t be on the test.
Tumblr media
You can that if you put in bigger and bigger numbers in the wavelength symbol, lambda, energy gets smaller and smaller. And there’s another constant! Don’t worry, we’ll get to Planck when we talk about quantum mechanics. He is the founder of the field, after all.

Discrete Discovery
So, what was the strange discovery Bohr made?
He noticed specific colors coming from the electrons when he measured the system. If the electrons could truly be anywhere around the nucleus, Bohr would have seen the full visible spectrum of colors like what you see in a rainbow. In quantum mechanical terms, this electron is quantized, meaning that it only releases discrete, or distinct, energy levels, not continuous ones, like that of a rainbow.

This led Bohr to think that the electrons must be an exact distance away from the nucleus and each other. When higher-energy electrons decrease in energy level, they go to another exact distance from the nucleus that is lower than the one they were. The transition to lower orbits creates a specific color of light, caused by the energy that they give off.
As reasonable as these discoveries seem, science isn’t always so easy to get right the first time, no matter how many years one has spent on the topic. Important lesson.
First, electrons do not just infinitely continue to expand outward from the nucleus according to their energy state. You might imagine that if it gets too far away, it would just break free of the attractive electric force of the nucleus. That is absolutely true, and, there is such a concept called a “free electron”, which is defined as just that.
Secondly, Bohr seems to think here that electrons are traveling on an orbit like planets around a star, making the model completely two-dimensional. Think about that for a moment. Are school buses in children’s drawings really as flat as they look on a piece of paper? Realistically, they’re three-dimensional; school buses carry rows and rows of children. This limits the electrons in his model to only expand outward, overlapping with the first problem.
To explain the exertion of light by transitioning electrons, Bohr had to apply research of the legendary Albert Einstein just about two decades earlier. Einstein made a name for himself by publishing a set of papers that included a discovery of the photon.
The photon is defined as light’s quantum, or the discrete and fundamental unit of energy of light. Einstein found that the quantum had no rest mass, meaning that, when the photon is not in motion (at rest), it has no mass. That mind-blowing discovery revolutionized physics for good.
Nevertheless, it was odd that an electron mirrored the photon in that it behaved as though it was quantized. Why would an electron, a particle with mass, share qualities with a photon, a particle without mass? Perhaps there were more similarities between these particles than just this?
Electromagnetic Forces of Nature
Light has been debated since the times of the legendary Sir Isaac Newton. Despite his own experiment of splitting light into its seven colors with a prism (yes, that was him), Newton believed that it was a particle because of how light created clear shadows.

See? Even great scientists can miss things. You’ll remember that the only reason that we get the rainbow of colors is due to refraction.
The kicker is that particles do not refract. Only waves do.
Experiments done over hundreds of years following Newton have yielded similar results. The most notable experiments were done by James Clerk Maxwell in the 1800s, who developed a set of equations for electromagnetic waves that we still use to this day. Of course, Einstein would rebel in the early 1900s and move on to experimentally prove that light was not only a wave, but also a particle.
So light is massless, and behaves like waves and particles. It’s crazy to insist that an electron could be similar, right?
Louis de Broglie, a scientist of France, didn’t think so. He saw where Bohr’s experiments left him and, unsatisfied with his model, tried to take it a step further theorizing that microscopic particles with mass also behaved like waves.
Using the aforementioned equations of Maxwell and Einstein’s discovery of the dual nature of light, de Broglie was set to make history. He knew that, as a charged particle, an electron would likely be under the influence of both an electric field and a magnetic field making their wave pattern electromagnetic. Electromagnetic waves, are defined as oscillations, or regular movements back and forth (like a pendulum), that are caused by both electric and magnetic fields.
Remember that equation we talked about in the last part – Coulomb’s Law? It defined the electrostatic “power” of charged particles. The relationship between particles, whether they were attracted to or repulsed by each other, would create an electric field!
Tumblr media
The strength of the field from any individual charge is determined by the strength of that charge.

Magnetic fields are created, simply, whenever charges move.

Beautiful Curves
With this knowledge, de Broglie only needed to validate his theory by comparing it to Bohr’s findings while improving upon them to eliminate the previously-mentioned shortcomings in Bohr’s model.
Fortunately, it is theoretically easy to do all three. Bohr found that the electrons must be in defined orbits – otherwise they would not be exhibiting discrete energy in the form of photons when they went from a higher to a lower energy state. That means electrons must exist such that their orbits are uninterrupted and stable. We define waves that are constant and not under any interference standing waves. The electrons must also be in phase with their orbits, meaning that they stay on a consistent path over time.
This is what that looks like:
Tumblr media
Image via [http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Bohr.html]
The frequency of the waves, or, how many humps there are, is purely determined by how much energy the electrons have. In fact, the only possible way that one can have an exact orbit as more and more electrons are added is if the electrons are at an energy level that allows them to be a standing wave. If electrons were to become excited and the energy used to excite them was not enough to bring them to a standing wave, it would not move to a higher energy state.
Also, notice that n = 1 looks exactly like Bohr’s model, a simple circular orbit. Bohr’s model was only correct for the case where there is only one electron present – the hydrogen atom!
Lastly, wrapping it up nicely, the waves from this model move into three dimensions, supplanting the limited 2D model of Bohr.

This is how electrons move, creating the wave-particle duality of all things composed of microscopic particles. We know that electrons are absurdly fast, as well, so, by observation, we can never know where on the path electrons are at any time. This is what ultimately inspired Schrödinger to create the electron cloud model that we use today. Despite the messiness of that model, electrons on it are moving in these same wave-like patterns. Schrödinger’s concern, unlike de Broglie’s, was to create a mathematic model to figure out the probability of finding an electron in a certain position, which he was successful in doing, beginning orbital theory.
So, in closing, at an atomic level, your body is behaving like both a wave and a particle. I hope that doesn’t keep you up at night. If it does, just stare at this image that is strikingly similar to the above model. I promise it will calm you down.
You deserve it after making it through this one.

People who read these reflections may wonder how I arrived at the understanding that socialism has failed. I am describing the whole experience in another book, but here a brief glance at the intellectual road I traveled may be helpful. It has not been so winding a road as some may think.
I stated the aim of my political activities in two articles in the Masses in 1916: not to reform men, or even primarily reform the world, but to “make all men as free to live and realize the world as it is possible for them to be.” In this, the years have brought no change.
In those same articles I dismissed Marx’s philosophic system, his idea that socialism is historically necessary, as “a rationalization of his wish,” and declared: “We must alter and remodel what he wrote, and make of it and of what else our recent science offers, a doctrine that shall clearly have the nature of hypothesis.”
The hypothesis, as I conceived it, was that by intensifying the working class struggle, and pursuing it to victory either at the polls or in a revolution, we could “socialize the means of production,” and thus extend democracy from politics into economics. That, I thought, would give every man a chance to build a life in his own chosen way. It would “liberate the proletariat and therewith all society,” to use a Marxian formula that I liked to quote.
To me, in short, socialism was not a philosophy of history, or of life—much less a religion—but a large-scale social-scientific experiment. I came to it by a process of thought rather than feeling. I had no personal envies or resentments; I was happily circumstanced and wisely brought up; I thought of myself as free. I wanted to extend that freedom to all men; I wanted to see a society without distinctions of caste, class, race, money-power—without exploitation, without the “wage system.” I knew this could not be brought about by preaching; I had observed the effects of preaching. I was captivated by the idea that it might be brought about by a self-interested struggle on the part of those most deprived under the present system. Thus the class struggle as a method was the very center of my socialist belief. The articles quoted above were titled “Towards Liberty, The Method of Progress,” and they were meant to be the first chapters of a book.
It was juvenile of me to imagine that humanity as a whole, especially by splitting itself into two halves, could turn a whole period of history into a scientific experiment. Science requires a scientist, or at least an engineer, and the engineer, in this case, would have to have dictatorial power. But that thought, if it entered my mind, I managed to elude. I worked out a socialism of my own which enabled me to take an independent position on many concrete questions: feminism, population control, peace, and war. Both the doctrine of class morals and the propaganda of class hate I rejected. I could think freely on such questions because my socialism was not a mystical cure-all, but merely a plan which I considered practical for solving the one specific problem of making freedom more general and democracy more democratic.
Although I was a member of the Socialist Party, the magazines I edited from 1912 to 1922, the Masses and the Liberator, were arrantly independent, and I was pretty regularly flayed alive by the party officials for some heresy or other. It was usually a revolutionary heresy. I was decidedly at the red end of the party spectrum. Still, it wasn’t always the reformists as against the revolutionists that I attacked. As often it was the dogmatism of both. Naturally, in my attempt to make Marxism over into an experimental science, I waged a continual war on the bigotry, the cant, the know-it-allism, of the party priesthood. This I think distinguished the policy of the old Masses and the Liberator as much as their militant insistence on the class struggle. I was always close friends with the I.W.W., and on good terms even with the anarchists, although I lectured them on their childish innocence of the concept of method. I was not afraid, either, of the word liberal with a small l, although I had my own definition of it. “A liberal mind,” I wrote in the Masses for September 1917, “is a mind that is able to imagine itself believing anything. It is the only mind that is capable of judging beliefs, or that can hold strongly without bigotry to a belief of its own.”
When the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in October 1917, shocking the whole world of progressive and even moderate socialist opinion, I backed them to the limit in the Liberator. I raised the money to send John Reed to Russia and published his articles that grew into the famous book, Ten Days That Shook the World. I was about the only “red” still out of jail in those violent days, and my magazine was for a time the sole source of unbewildered information about what was happening in Russia. Its circulation reached a peak of sixty thousand.
When Lenin’s pamphlet, called in English “The Soviets at Work,” was published—the same that won Whittaker Chambers to communism—I was enraptured. The monumental practicality, the resolute factualness, of Lenin’s mind, combined as almost never before with a glowing regard for poor and oppressed people, anxiety over their freedom, devotion to the idea of their entrance into power, swept me off my feet. I still think it one of the noblest—and now saddest—of political documents. It convinced me that Lenin’s mind was experimental. In every line he seemed to realize my ideal of a scientific revolutionist. I greeted him in two articles in the Liberator as “a Statesman of a New Order,” and dedicated myself with no doctrinal reservations to the defense of his principles of action and his Soviet regime.
Attacking those who accused him of dogmatism, I exclaimed: “I have never seen a sign in any speech or writing of Lenin that he regarded the Marxian theory as anything more than a scientific hypothesis in process of verification.”
There were few translations from Russian in those days. I had to go to Russia and learn the language before I found out that Lenin was a true believer in the Marxian mystique. He was, to be sure, more high-handed with its postulates than any other believer—much more so than Trotsky. He had the trick, as Karl Radek once remarked to me, of “deciding a question on the basis of the facts and then fixing it up with the theory afterward.” He also had Hegel’s notion of “dialectic logic” to help him with this trick. I did not know enough then to distinguish between the limited freedom dispensed to the faithful by this ingenious notion, and the complete freedom of a mind dealing only with facts, purposes, and plans of action. I gave my heart to Lenin more completely than I have to any other leader and fought for the Bolsheviks on the battlefield of American opinion with all the influence my voice and magazine possessed. From the October revolution until Baron Wrangel was swept out of the Crimea, I was engaged in a civil war, and my socialist convictions grew hard and firm. It took a long time after that, a steady and merciless bombardment of hostile and unanswerable facts, to unsettle them.
Going to Russia
Still, I was far enough from fanatical when I sailed for Russia in 1922 to remark to my friends that I was “going over to find out whether what I have been saying is true.” I arrived in September, in time to learn a little Russian before I attended the fourth congress of the Third International. I was not a delegate and had no official status, but the Liberator was well enough known so that I was hospitably received as a guest. Later on, Trotsky, who consented to cooperate with me on a biographical portrait, gave me a portentous document bearing his signature and the seal of the Red Army, asking everybody in Russia to receive me cordially and attend to my needs. I traveled wherever I wanted to with that document, and saw whatever I asked to see.
I traveled at the height of the swift recovery that followed the adoption of the New Economic Policy, and I experienced Soviet life at its best. Although surprised and shocked by some features of the experiment, I found ground for great hope also. Only one thing seemed to me calamitously bad. That was the bigotry and Byzantine scholasticism which had grown up around the sacred scriptures of Marxism. Hegel, Marx, Engels, Plekhanov, Lenin—these men’s books contained for the Bolsheviks the last word of human knowledge. They were not science, they were revelation. Nothing remained for living thinkers to do but apply them, gloss them, dispute about them, expatiate on them, find in them the germs of every new thought or thing that came into the world.
Instead of liberating the mind of man, the Bolshevik Revolution locked it into a state’s prison tighter than ever before. No flight of thought was conceivable, no poetic promenade even, no sneak through the doors or peep out of a window in this pre-Darwinian dungeon called Dialectic Materialism. No one in the western world has any idea of the degree to which Soviet minds are closed and sealed tight against any idea but the premises and conclusions of this antique system of wishful thinking. So far as concerns the advance of human understanding, the Soviet Union is a gigantic roadblock, armed, fortified, and defended by indoctrinated automatons made out of flesh, blood, and brains in the robot factories they call schools.
I felt this barbarous thing more keenly than any other disappointment in the land of my dreams. I was sure it contained the seeds of priest rule and police rule. Any state religion, as all the great liberals have pointed out, is death to human freedom. The separation of church and state is one of the main measures of protection against tyranny. But the Marxian religion makes this separation impossible, for its creed is politics; its church is the state. There is no hope within its dogmas of any evolution toward the free society it promises.
For these reasons, instead of writing the travel stories expected of me about “Life under the Soviets,” I went into the reading room of the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow and got down to work on my old unfinished partial torso of a book, Towards Liberty, the Method of Progress. Although not deceived that anybody would pay prompt attention to me, I thought it my duty to the revolution to attack this roadblock, this prodigy of obtuseness parading as ultimate wisdom, in the only way it could be attacked, by an unanswerable demonstration of the conflict between Marxism and the scientific method.
I stayed a year and nine months in Russia, and put in a major part of my time learning Russian and reading, mostly in that language, the essential literature on which the actions of the Bolsheviks were based. Leaving Russia in June 1924, I spent the next three years in western Europe, where I finished a book on the subject and named it Marx and Lenin, the Science of Revolution. It was published in London in 1926. The Anglo-Saxon world had so little interest then in Marxian theory that I had to advance the money for its publication. But Albert and Charles Boni bought sheets and published it a year later in New York. La Nouvelle Revue Française published a French translation the following year. My money investment was well repaid. But my success in undermining the roadblock in Russia was not conspicuous.
The copy I sent to the Marx-Engels Institute was returned by the Post Office marked: “Denied admission by the Department of Publications.” The only murmur to come out of Russia was from the great scientist, Ivan Pavlov, who surprised me with a letter in his own hand sent fearlessly through the mail: “I endorse completely your criticism of the philosophical foundation of Marxism.” And he added this contribution to my painfully slow recovery from socialism: “There isn’t any science of revolution, and there won’t be for a long time. There is only a groping of the life force, partly guided empirically, of those who have a much-embracing and strong common sense. Our Bolshevik Revolution, with its details so disastrous to our intellectual and moral development, I consider an anachronism which (of this I am convinced) will repeat itself in this form never and nowhere in the civilized world. Such is my deepest understanding of these matters.”
Holding on to Leninism
In that book, I wrote as a believer in the Soviet system, and I still imputed to Lenin a stride forward, however unconscious, toward the attitude of experimental science, calling him by contrast with his more orthodox opponents an “engineer of revolution.” There was a great deal of truth in this, but I still managed to elude its implications. I thought it was a wonderful and hopeful thing that Lenin had succeeded, by basing himself on the Marxian analysis of class forces, in throwing a net over the whole of Russian society, and gathering the power into his hands and that of a party dedicated to building socialism.
This theoretic conception stood firm in my mind, even though I had seen before leaving Russia what I now believe to be its direct and normal consequence: the usurpation of power by a tyrant having no honest instinct for the liberties of men. I had not only seen but very carefully studied the plot by which Stalin made himself master after Lenin’s death. Besides studying his maneuvers, I attended the party congress of May 1924, at which his open attack was launched and Trotsky’s prestige in the party destroyed. Behind the scenes at that congress, Trotsky told me in whispers the drift and essential details of the suppressed document called Lenin’s Testament. I was leaving Russia in a few days, and I spent those days gathering, with his encouragement, what further documents I needed to expose the plot and explain it. To do this I laid aside my work on Marxism and wrote the little book called Since Lenin Died, which remains, I think, an authentic source for the history of the conflict about leadership which followed Lenin’s death.
In the evolution of my socialist opinions that book marked a rather modest step. My conclusion was only a caution to revolutionists in other countries against accepting in the name of Leninism “the international authority of a group against whom Lenin’s dying words were a warning, and who have preserved that authority by suppressing the essential texts of Lenin.” Fourteen years would pass before I was able to see in that group, not only an enemy of Lenin’s plans, but a result of the revolution as conceived and engineered by him.
I had said enough in my two books, however, to ostracize me completely from the official communist movement. When I came home from Europe in 1927 most of my old political friends refused to speak to me on the street. I was a traitor, a renegade, a pariah, a veritable untouchable, so far as the communists were concerned. And as the bitterness mounted, this mood spread to the radical, and even in some degree to the liberal, intelligentsia as a whole. To get rid of my facts, I was of course promptly and indelibly labeled “Trotskyist,” although I neither agreed with Trotsky’s Marxism nor ever shared the delusion that he might become the successful leader of a party. That the policies of Lenin and the original aims of the Bolsheviks were defended by Trotsky was made unmistakably clear in my little book, and will be unmistakably clear in history, I believe, if honest history survives. But my loyalty was not to any leader or group. My loyalty was still to the working class, to the idea of progress through class struggle. In principle, I was merely supplying the international working class and its leaders with information essential to the intelligent conduct of the struggle.
With the same purpose I translated and published in 1928 the suppressed program and documents of the exiled Left Opposition of the Russian Communist party, calling the book The Real Situation in Russia. As the text was theirs rather than mine, I gave the royalties to a small branch of the Trotskyist Opposition which had by that time been formed in America. This added to a growing impression that I was a personal follower of Trotsky, although my private thoughts about his failure to outmaneuver Stalin were anything but those of a follower. It was always Lenin’s policies, and the truth about what was happening in Russia, that I was defending. My translation of Trotsky’s History of the Russian Revolution was made with admiration but not endorsement. To me that book is the supreme and most compelling application of the Marxian metaphysics to history, far outdoing the similar efforts of Marx himself. But I think it will be the last. No giant will ever again drive facts into those forms at such an expense of intellectual power.
A book which marks a longer step in my own development, emotional if not intellectual, was my Artists in Uniform, written in 1932–33, and published in 1934. There I described the hideous dictatorship in literature and the fine arts set up under Stalin’s knout, and the obsequious infantilism of Americans like Mike Gold, Joe Freeman, Bob Minor, Hugo Geliert, Maurice Becker, William Gropper, my ex-colleagues on the Liberator, who of their own free will kneeled down to it. No one who had believed in the socialist revolution as a liberation of spirit, as we all in those days so loudly did, could with intellectual honor pretend that this was it or any step in the direction of it. I did not pull any punches in that book, but I still spoke as a revolutionary socialist, a non-party old Bolshevik. I said in my introduction:
“I am on the side of the Soviets and the proletarian class struggle. But I think that critical truth-speaking is an element of that struggle essential to its success . . . The efforts toward socialist construction in the Soviet Union must inevitably serve the world movement in some sense as a guide. These efforts should not be followed, however, as a seamstress follows a pattern, but as a scientist repeats an experiment, progressively correcting the errors and perfecting the successful strokes.”
Those were, I think, my last published words as a defender of the Soviet Union.
Losing Faith
It is not easy to set dates in such a matter. “Who can determine when it is that the scales in the balance of opinion begin to turn, and what was a greater probability in behalf of a belief becomes a positive doubt against it?” Cardinal Newman asks the question in his Apologia, and I must say that with all the documents I have in hand, I can not be exact as to the moment when I abandoned my attitude of “loyal to the Soviet Union but opposed to the Stalin leadership,” and decided that thanks to that leadership the hope of socialism in Russia was dead. I only know that during the year 1933 those positive doubts grew so strong that I abandoned my pro-Soviet lectures, and remained silent for about two years. In the spring of 1936, I wrote an essay, “The End of Socialism in Russia,” which was published in Harper’s Magazine, January 1937, and afterward by Little, Brown & Company as a book. “To my mind, there is not a hope left for the classless society in present-day Russia,” I said in that book. But I still regarded Stalin’s totalitarian dictatorship as an enemy, rather than a result, of the policies of Lenin.
It took me another two years to arrive at the knowledge that Lenin’s methods—or in other words bolshevik Marxism—were to blame. This further slow step in my enlightenment was recorded in another book, published in 1940, and called Stalin’s Russia and the Crisis in Socialism.
“I now think,” I wrote in that book, “that this brilliant device for engineering a seizure of power, invented by Lenin with a super-democratic purpose, has shown itself to be in fatal conflict with the purpose. I think that an armed seizure of power by a highly organized minority party, whether in the name of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat, the Glory of Rome, the Supremacy of the Nordics, or any other slogan that may be invented, and no matter how ingeniously integrated with the masses of the population, will normally lead to the totalitarian state. ‘Totalitarian state’ is merely the modern name for tyranny. It is tyranny with up-to-date technique. And the essence of that technique is a reverse use of the very thing upon whose forward action Lenin ultimately relied, the machinery of public education.”
This change of opinion invalidated much that I had said in the second part of my book, Marx and Lenin, the Science of Revolution. Moreover, I had learned a great deal more about Marxism since that book was published in 1926. Its demonstration of the unscientific, and indeed superstitious, character of Marx’s whole mode of thought seemed more and more important as the battle between the Soviets and western civilization developed. It was my main contribution to the battle, and I wrote it over again as maturely and carefully as I know how. With the title Marxism: Is It Science, it was published in the autumn of that same year, 1940.
Even then, although rejecting Lenin’s system of party control, I had not decided that “the socialist hypothesis” was disproven. That decision, or the inner force to confront that fact, arrived in the following year. And in this case, I do remember the precise moment. At a cocktail party given by Freda Utley—I think for her friend Bertrand Russell—during a conversation about some last and most significantly dreadful news that had come out of Russia, she suddenly asked me:
“Aside from these Russian developments, do you still believe in the socialist idea?”
I said, “No.”
No More Socialism
Although I had never said this to myself, the answer came from the depths of my heart and mind. It seemed perfectly clear, once the question was boldly put, that if the socialist hypothesis were valid in general, some tiny shred of the benefits promised by it would have appeared when the Russian capitalists were expropriated and production taken over by the state, no matter how untoward the circumstances.
By that time everything in Russia was worse from the standpoint of socialist ideals than it had been under the regime of the Tsar. I did not need any additional experiments such as that in Nazi Germany, or in England, or the obvious drift in other countries, to convince me. I was sure that the whole idea of extending freedom, or justice, or equality, or any other civilized value, to the lower classes through common ownership of the means of production was a delusive dream, a bubble that had taken over a century to burst.
I have never had any hesitations or regrets about the decision—only about the unconscionably long time it took me to reach it. When I am denounced as a turncoat by the true believers it does indeed bring a blush to my cheek, but only because it took me so long to turn my coat. I sadly regret the precious twenty years I spent muddling and messing around with this idea, which with enough mental clarity and moral force I might have seen through when I went to Russia in 1922.
This present book contains my principal conclusions, or the principal things I have learned politically, since making that decision. I imagine some of its readers will echo the remark of Upton Sinclair in a recent letter, that I have merely “gone from one extreme to the other.” I think, on the contrary, that the step is shorter from hard-headed class-struggle socialism to a firm defense of the free-market economy than to the old wishful notion of a high-minded slide into utopia. It is a straighter step to take. The struggle is still for freedom; the main facts are still economic; the arch-enemy is still the soft-headed idealist who refuses to face facts.
