Anomala orientalis
Oriental beetle
7 of July 2022 — Maryland, USA
As you can tell from the name, these guys are also nonnative and invasive :(
They’re so cute though, look at those antennae ;-;

Its a shame youre invasive, Anomala orientalis, because you are cute as hell.
Photo taken seconds before pictured beetle took off and was never seen again. Apologies for the butt quality.

a melanistic individual of the oriental beetle (Anomala orientalis).
most specimens are light tan with varying degrees of dark spotting, but jet black beetles like this one are fairly common.

Note
This actually looks more like an Oriental beetle, Anomala orientalis, which is a scarab! If you’re in the US they are not native.
Hello, Mr. Leech! Recently this insect (I think it’s a beetle?) has been showing up around my house and I’ve never seen it before. Google hasn’t been able to help me identify it - do you have any idea what it might be?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a carpet beetle! They eat dry animal based materials like leather, fur, cotton and bone. This makes them a serious pest for people who collect those kinds of things - they've even damaged priceless mummies in museums! - but almost any home can have them, feeding on even the bits of hair and dust (which is mostly our skin cells) that collect in corners! They'll eat the remains of other arthropods, too, and old spiderwebs and stuff!

The Oriental beetle (Anomala orientalis) is a beetle about 0.7 - 1.1 cm (0.3 - 0.4 inches) long, with mottled, metallic brown- and black-colored elytra and a similarly-colored thorax and head during the adult stage. It is sometimes confused with the Japanese beetle. During the larval stage the oriental beetle can be identified by the parallel line raster pattern. It is native to Asia (at Arlington, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRuf-hUMqGUQnLBcm94n_iQR9LDPcjzlW4M_aY0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sadly this is an invasive species with a racist common name, let’s call her Anomala orientalis or an Asian chafer.
