Love & Angst Chapter 15

It was 2:00 in the morning, and Shouta was standing there on your porch.  What was he thinking?!  You pulled into your driveway, got out of your car, and went straight to your porch.  "What do you want, Shouta?" you asked flatly.  "I texted you the other day, but you didn't respond.  I really need to talk to you," he said with some emotion, instead of his usual monotone voice.  "Listen Shouta, I've had a really long night, and I just want to go to bed."  "Y/N, please..." he pleaded.  You thought about it for a moment.  "Shouta, it's late right now, I just want to go to bed.  Do you want to meet up somewhere tomorrow and I'll let you say your piece?" you asked him.  You didn't want to listen to what he said at your home again, since the last time he did, he ended up breaking your heart. His face lit up at that, "yes, absolutely."  You two agreed upon a time and place, and bid each other goodnight.

You woke up the next morning feeling groggy.  You thought about your horrible night at work, but how you had such a good time with Naomi at the bar afterwards. SHIT: you agreed to meet with Shouta later this evening so you two could "talk."  Or rather, so he could talk to you.  The grogginess instantly went away, and the nervous feelings came on instead.  What could he possibly want to talk about that he didn't say months ago?  Did he actually end up seeing you at the restaurant the night you were there with Ken?  You didn't think he saw you since his back was facing you, but who really knows?  You knew Naomi was probably still sleeping; she's a night owl, but you decided to text her anyway to let her know that you were meeting up with Shouta later that evening.  You also decided to text Toshinori and let him know what was going on. He was awake, "wow, Y/N!  I haven't the slightest clue as to what he would like to talk to you about, but let me know how it goes!"

The previous night, you and Shouta agreed to meet at another coffee shop downtown.  He suggested the cat cafe, but you rejected that idea; it would bring back too many sad memories for you since that's where you had your first date.  You also decided to not meet him at the same coffee shop where you first met Ken.  You decided on the coffee shop, and agreed to meet at 5:00pm.  At that point, Naomi must have woken up, because she texted you back, "ooooo, girl!  You'll have to let me know what happens!  Send me your location in case you need backup."  You told her exactly where you would be at 5:00pm.  As always, you were grateful for Naomi's friendship.

You nervously paced around your house for the majority of the day.  You had this nervous energy about talking with Shouta for the first time in months.  Eventually, 4:00pm rolled around, so you started getting ready.  You put on a sweater with jeans, and put on a pair of knee-high boots.  You didn't bother with any makeup, what was the point?  You put some food down for Annie and Jareth, kissed them both on the forehead, and left for the coffee shop.  On your drive, you thought a lot about how this conversation was going to go, and you were super nervous.  You arrived at the coffee shop promptly at 5:00pm.  As you were getting out of your car, you saw Shouta coming down the sidewalk.  He was wearing his usual black attire, and had his hair back in a low messy bun.  Even though he broke your heart, the sight of him still made your heart skip a beat.

He opened the door to the coffee shop for you, and you two went inside.  It was completely dead there that evening.  He asked what you would like to order, and you both ordered your usuals: you, a vanilla latte and him, a black coffee.  You found a table near a window to sit at, where you both sat in an awkward silence for a full minute, just sipping on your coffees instead.  He finally spoke up, "how have you been, Y/N?"  "I'm just fine, Shouta.  You're the one who wanted to talk, so what is it that you wanted to say?" you spat back at him.  As soon as you said that, he looked like a sad puppy, and, for the love of all that is holy, you actually felt badly for the tone of voice you used with him.  "I'm sorry..." you muttered.  He instantly replied, "no, it's okay.  I deserved that.  I'll just get right to it."

"Y/N...I love you more than anybody in this world.  It killed me to do it, but I had to lie to you that night when I told you I didn't love you anymore.  The true reason I broke up with you was to keep you safe," he said in an emotional tone of voice.  You couldn't believe your ears.  He continued, "the League of Villains is rapidly growing, as well as the crime rate in our city.  Even though the students under the watchful eyes of us at the student dorms, we fear for their safety every day.  If I continued to see you, I feared I would be putting you in danger, as well.  I know that seems like a lame excuse, but it's the truth. I couldn't bear the thought of you getting hurt."

"I've been trying to keep a watchful eye on you to assure your safety, and I'm so grateful nothing has happened to you.  You are constantly in my thoughts, and constantly in my heart.  Then I saw you on Friday night at the restaurant...with another man...the thought of you with another man made me sick to my stomach..the thought of him kissing you, the thought of his hands all over you, making love to you..."  You instantly retorted, "oh, that makes you feel sick, but you were there with Ms. Joke?"  You couldn't help yourself.  He feverishly shook his head, "it's not what you think, I promise.  We were going over training strategies for our students.  I had told her we could have this discussion and strategize on the school grounds, but she wouldn't budge, insisting on going out to dinner.  She's the most frustrating person I've ever met, and I have absolutely no romantic interest in her."

You thought about what he said for a minute, and said flatly, "Shouta, even if everything you're saying is true, the fact of the matter is, you broke me.  I cannot trust you."  He looked absolutely defeated at this statement, but still said, "you have every right to feel that way.  Please, let me prove my love and dedication to you."  Tears welled up in your eyes, "Shouta...I don't know.  Like I said, you broke me that night that you told me you didn't love me anymore, and something in me changed that night.  I just met Ken, the man I was with at the restaurant.  I don't know him well enough yet, but he is sweet and kind, and seems to be good for me.  I need that kind of stability and grace."

Once again, he looked defeated, but nevertheless, said, "I understand.  Can I at least ask you this?  Will you think about this...about giving us another chance?  I want to prove my love and dedication to you, no matter how long it takes.  I want you to choose me..." he trailed off.  You just sat there and didn't say anything, not sure how to respond to that.  After about two full minutes, you finally replied, "I need time to think about all of this.  Can you respect that?"  He nodded his head in response.  "I should really get going now, Shouta.  I have work in the morning, and I have a lot to prepare."  He just nodded his head again, "I understand.  May I at least walk you to your car?"  You shrugged your shoulders, and he followed you out to your car.  "Goodnight, Y/N, I hope to see you again soon."

In terms of patterns, I tend to start with either a bit of dialogue or a bit of action? It's not really a conscious choice, I think I just like dropping people into a moment as that tends to be how stories come to me. There are a few outliers to that though! Both I Might be Great Tomorrow and Acid Tongued start more with a bit of reflection. I do think I tend to do that more with stories that are designed to be longer though, and given those are the only two that aren't one shots on here - - yeah, it checks out, haha.

Every month, new victim. One thing they all have in common was… they dared to approach the abandoned mansion on Greyshire Street. That mansion belonged to the Frey family ― the founders of X-City, whose lineage had been lost, with their son going missing after Valentine Frey’s ― the mayor of the time ― untimely demise. X-City is a fairly young town, but it already had seen its fair share of gruesome events. Take the Incident, five years ago… The Incident… nobody truly knows what it is. Officials say it was an earthquake, which are far from common in this area. There are a lot of theories floating around the Internet and such, but none of them sound plausible. One thing I know for sure, though… The Incident is something that is bigger than us all.

Follow the Power Lines: a Visual Novel/game project currently in the writing stage!

Genre: Horror, Sci-fi, a bit of fantasy, a bit of romance, thriller... A little bit of everything.

What is Follow the Power Lines? It is a series that consists of three stories centered around a certain person... Who? That I cannot reveal, yet. But along the way you get to discover the stories of many other people, whose lives they affected. You can expect a lot of, well, aesthetic regarding electricity, scary abandoned locations, all those fun shenanigans... and perhaps they are all even haunted. Could it really be just a ghost, though? There might be a little more to it than meets the eye... This particular story takes place in the year 2022. Come along with Annie Nites, our protagonist, who is trying to change her currently sad life, uncover the mysteries of her hometown and find out what happened to her parents, as well as her best friend Naomi Mizukubo -- an artist with a timid personality, who does not want to have anything to do with any of this.

This will most likely be a kinetic visual novel built in ren'py, but things tend to change often around here, so... who knows.

Notes: this is a passion project I have had in my brain for more than a decade now, but I have decided to finally give this story a vessel. Any questions and such are welcome! I will try my best to avoid spoilers, but the nature of this story is quite fragile if you do mind them. I will make sure to tag/put them under readmore though. Thank you!

Analyzing the new Champion Stadium parameters, and seeing what’s likely going to be useful toward the 500 extra points we need per stage.

Interference Immunity (50) It’s only 50 points, but unless you rely on flinch, it’s pretty free.  Status abusers are especially stoked with this one.  Finally, you can just hit your status without needing to put on Defenses +1 parameter.  It’s not a huge change, but it’s a fairly nice one.

Five Stats Up 3 at Start (100) This feels like a really low point value for the strength of it.  We’re giving them 1.5 X Stats All just for opening the fight, I feel like that’s significant.  Moreover, this boosts everything.  Attacks are scarier for your tank, but also defenses are way higher and your strikers are going to have a bit of trouble.  I feel like this is probably the least worth it new condition, with the only real beneficiaries of it being Snatch/Haze users.

Five Stats Down 3 at Start (100) And now the inverse; hit yourself with -3 all stats debuff.  Do it you clown.  You love it.  This is an interesting condition, in that there are units who don’t just ignore it, but love it.  Anni Steven loves this.  Lysandre loves this.  Any Downside Up user loves this.  Any Impervious unit loves this.  Realistically, tanks with Stalwart/Unbending combo, or damage dealers with Headstrong or Dauntless, love this.  Speed is the only real issue, as this will cause fairly significant gauge control issues if it can’t be addressed.  I don’t think this condition is good.  I think the point total should be 200, given that it kinda obliterates any unit that doesn’t have immunity to debuffs in the relevant stat.  At 100, it’s basically a cute gimmick for Impervious/Downside Up units, but little else.  Niche, but funny.

Physical/Special Damage Reduction 8 (100 each) I’m lumping them together because they’re two sides of the same coin.  Barring a handful of units, this condition is free.  Most units cover both their main offensive type and their sync type with the same offensive stat.  Exceptions like Lance, C!Blue, and sometimes Silver or Zinniquaza exist, but they’re rare exceptions rather than frequent issues.  I feel like it makes sense for this point value to be 100.  It’s pretty negligible overall.

Standard Damage Reduction 8 (300) You know how, regardless of what parameters you’re going for, you always click Move Gauge -2, because the condition is a free 300 points?  This is an attempt to make another such condition.  But unlike that condition, which has specifically ruined Caitlin’s grid expansion in ways I will never forgive, Standard Damage Reduction creates an interesting tradeoff.

So long as you are playing on-type, your moves will deal full damage.  Off-type, however, cannot bypass this condition, and will have to allocate elsewhere.  This is an attempt to discourage, or at least diminish, off-type clears.  It’s...an effective consideration.  300 points is not a small ask.  A lot of threats will be dissuaded by 2.5k off type, knowing that the free 300 point condition isn’t there.  I think this is a nice balancing tool for encouraging on-type, which has always been the end goal.  I also like how it’s free money for Stall, which could absolutely care less.  Between this and the other two damage reductions, Stall got all 500 points already with no issues.  Keep that tally rolling, friends.

Can’t Change Zone, Weather, or Terrain (150) I love this condition.  I wish it were 200, but it’s fine.  “Why do you love it so much?”  F2P clears are on the menu.  Most F2P clears, which is like all of them, don’t use weather.  Sun and Rain happen, and very rarely you might see a Hail like Candice.  I can’t think of anyone barring like...Naomi who does Sandstorm well enough to justify it.  But for those kinds of clears, the lack of setting Zone or Terrain is...already out of their grasp.  There’s no F2P Psychic Terrain setter, for instance.  There’s no Bug Zone setter.  If I’m aiming to clear with an F2P comp of Bugsy/Hop/Nanu, this is free.  Combine this with Standard Damage Reduction, and we’re only 50 points off from what we were using before.  Slap on Special Damage Reduction, and now we can take off 50 points.  This is such a free conditional.  The only noteworthy issue is, it only stops your weather.  If the foe is setting weather, it goes through.  Which means you probably don’t want to mess with this condition against those Fire-type stages like Flint and Malva, where Sun is automatically set and super dangerous.  This is also, as you may guess, a free Stall condition.  Weather, Terrain, and Zones have nothing to do with Stall.  Which means, Stall can take off 150 points from previous parameters.  Stall actually got easier.  I was legitimately worried Stall was about to die off for good, but they actually slightly brought it back.  This rules.  Shoutouts to BP Erika, who is one again one of the best early game units out there, now that she can add a free 650 points just from this update alone.

I also want to applaud the mixed choice here, skewing toward “turn off Zone.”  There’s been a long discussion about the effects of debuffs being permanent, and how good a unit like Lucian is, with his only major flaw being that he eats the Tech role and doesn’t supply field effects.  Now Lucian competes.  You can get 100 points for a Zone setter that can apply No Debuffs, but you get 150 if you take Lucian instead.  The turn back to debuffing as a reasonable alternative, and the push to suggest that hey, field effects aren’t necessarily the best course, is nice.  Though also, let’s be real.  It’s because Rebuffs exist.  They want to shill rebuffs, and turning off Zones now that we almost have them all means Rebuffs have higher value.  It’s a cute ploy.  Still waiting on Ice Zone though, guys.

Strike/Tech (50) or Support (100) Take 3x Damage Okay, I take back what I said.  100 points for the foe getting +3 to all stats is comparatively fine, considering the alternative is a miserable 50 points for “Your striker dies if AoE occurs.”  I’ve seen people call these conditions free.  Those people seem to have forgotten about Sinnoh, Hoenn, and Kalos.  AoE is the norm.  Those stages are entirely operating on the idea that if they just hit AoE enough, it doesn’t matter how sturdy your tank is, you’ll lose if your striker drops.  And on offensive parameters, those attacks were already chunking you pretty hard.  Think about how hard the sides hit when attacks go through.  Now imagine triple that damage.  You are a corpse now.  The idea of allowing your support to take triple damage is also just insane.  Offensive parameters are bad enough, you’re going to seriously triple that damage?  It’s insanity for how little it grants.  The only time this is justifiable, is when you don’t have one of those unit types.  If you’re a single support with dual striker, take the Tech condition, it won’t bother you.  If you’re running two Techs and a support, like SS Morty/SS Lyra/SS Erika, take the Striker condition.  If you’re somehow tanking with someone who isn’t a support for some reason, sure, take the free 100 points.  But in most conditions, this feels...nightmarish.

Final Thoughts On type offense makes out like a bandit, getting a pretty free 400 points from Standard and either Physical or Special Damage Reduction.  Adding 100 points from there is a little iffy, but it’s a lot better than 500 under old conditions.

Off-type offense now contends with all the other parameters, since it can’t take Standard.  You get maybe 100 points, but then you’re struggling with more Strength or other general conditions like sync cooldown.  It got a lot riskier compared to other strats.

Stall won this trade.  Standard, Physical, and Special Damage Reduction, with No Weather/Zone/Terrain, is a free 650 points, meaning you can take off parameters they had to add before.  This is a godsend for Stall comps, because now you can take off some of the horrid Strength parameters that plagued them.

Debuffers also get a nice incentive over Zone setters, with the No Zone effect giving 50 more points than No Debuffs.  Rebuff application now has a relevant use as well.  It always did, but you know.  Zones were just more effective in this meta.  Other approaches now have a free 150 on their side.

The other winners I’d like to bring up are Piercing Blows.  I don’t know this for sure, but the Damage Reduction conditions seem like they’re added passives.  Which Piercing Blows would ignore.  Adding in an extra 100 points for on-type, in the damage type you’re using, is a nice little perk.  For off-type clears in the new limited CS, it’s a free 300 as well.  This is wildly significant, but also I’d just like to grouse a moment about the fact that if they are passives, yes it benefits Anni Lillie, Anni N, N, Victor, and Solgaleo, but it also notably benefits SST Red who doesn’t deserve it.  Really, really wish there were something that stopped that asshole, but they kinda made him invincible.
