Anni Albers (1899-1994) is held in high regard as one of the most paramount textile designers of the 20th century. Albers attended the Bauhaus in 1922 and begrudgingly participated in the weaving workshop as it was the only one available to women at that time. By 1931, Albers had received a diploma for innovative work and stepped into the role as head of the weaving workshop, a rare occurrence for a woman at the school. When the Bauhaus closed in 1933, Albers accepted an invitation to teach at North Carolina’s Black Mountain College. She stayed on as an assistant professor at Black Mountain College until 1949 where she was known for her experimental approaches to materials and processes.
Albers broke new ground within the world of weaving and graphic design, taking printmaking techniques into uncharted territory. In 1949 she was the first textile designer to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and spent the remainder of her life making and showing art. Despite her prolific artmaking, Albers left behind very little evidence of her working process aside from one unassuming notebook dating to the latter part of her life.
Anni Albers: Notebook 1970-1980 is a delightful glimpse into the mind of Albers. A facsimile of her simple composition notebook, the publication is replete with spontaneous works and preliminary ideas sketched out in pencil and occasionally red ink. Most works are dated, and a few have titles corresponding to subsequent prints and printed textiles. This is the only known notebook of Albers and a joyous wellspring of inspiration for any textile artist or designer.
Anni Albers: Notebook 1970-1980 was published in 2017 by David Zwirner Books out of New York.

Happy Birthday to Anni Albers who was born on this day in 1899. Anni Albers (1899-1994) was a textile artist, designer, printmaker, and educator known for her pioneering graphic wall hangings and weavings.
Beginning in 1970, Anni Albers filled her graph-paper notebook regularly until 1980. This publication is a facsimile of her only known notebook which shows her working process.
The notebook follows Albers's deliberations and progression as a draftsman in their original form. It reveals the way she went about making complex patterns, exploring them piece by piece, line by line, in a visually dramatic and mysteriously beautiful series of geometric arrangements.

Anni Albers: Cuaderno 1970-1980
"Anni Albers.
Editorial: David Zwirner Books

Journal Modernist Estates Christmas Gift Guide
It’s the first of December, how did that happen? Now an annual tradition, here’s my edit of bits and bobs I’d like to receive under the tree this year.
Anni Albers: Notebook 1970–1980 £25 A superb facsimile of the only known notebook of legendary artist Anni Albers, this publication offers insight into the methodology of a modern master. Beginning in 1970, Anni Albers filled her graph-paper notebook regularly until 1980. This rare and previously unpublished document of her working process contains intricate drawings for her large body of graphic work, as well as studies for her late knot drawings.
Published by David Zwirner Books Available from Waterstones.
Hario Japanese Enamel Kettle £49 Actually I already have a very nice Piquot Ware kettle but if I didn't I would have this elegant one by Hario. Part of the ‘Bona Collection’, the kettle can be used for heating coffee or water directly on the stove.  Available from Arket
Cook’s Camden The Making of Modern Housing Normal price £45, receive £10 discount — see below Mark Swenarton’s thorough study of Britain’s golden era of social housing by the likes of architects such as Neave Brown and Benson and Forsyth — working under Camden’s borough architect Sydney Cook. Beautifully illustrated and packed with original photography by Martin Charles, and contemporary images by Tim Crocker. Nicely designed too, ah-hem.
Published by Lund Humphries. To receive £10 off use code CAMDEN10 at checkout at www.lundhumphries.com. Offer valid until 30 April 2018.
100 prints by Sophie Smallhorn £300 each If you missed the show in September of Sophie Smallhorn’s 100 one off colourful graphic screenprints, there’s still a chance to own one. Contact her studio for more information on what’s available.

Concrete Planter Making Kit £15 I had fun this year with my friend Michael Samuels, a sculptor (check out his work) mucking about with concrete. We made a concrete light pull for my newly renovated bathroom. If you don't have a friend with a studio and bags of concrete and sand, you can buy this little Concrete Planter making kit. The process is incredibly easy, a bit like making a cake but with less eggs.
Available from Not on the High Street
Hay Toothbrushes £4 Still on the bathroom and egg topic, I was originally going to have wall to wall eggy yellow tiles in my bathroom. I was persuaded this would be a terrible mistake by  a friend who suggested I stick to neutral colours and add colour with accessories. I half took his advice (orange has been replaced with sophisticated white, grey and turquoise), but I have bought a shed load of these cheery toothbrushes by Hay.
Available from Nook

Dear Anni Albers,
I appreciate your approach to art making. You must’ve had to focus so much on the process of weaving. but the fact that you were able to stay courageous in experimentation with hues, patterns, and materials.
You’ve taught your students to have a sense of playfulness when it comes to their work, and I think any young artist would have a sense of gratitude for the reminder.
Tumblr media
Another key part to your process that inspired me is the willingness you have to embrace accidents in your work, even though weaving is highly technical. Planning is also integral to your process, but you don’t let it takeover your process. I can relate to the need to plan it is important for my process as well, but sometimes I get too caught up in the planning.

In a publicized “Notebook” of Anni Albers drawings on graph paper from 1970-1980 give insight into her methodology. It is clear that studies of geometry is very valuable to your weaving work, yet you allow your finished product to be as different as they need to be.

Cover Research
I began looking at book covers for inspiration. I like the simplicity of these designs, they are simple but not boring, they are clear and concise and this is something I want to create with my cover.
A Guidebook of Alternative Nows are simple and clear, yet the circle typography design gives it personality. The type is simple and legible despite not being justified by a horizontal line.
