I’m breaking my rule about sharing projects that are far from completion. Let me first just say that this will be a future pattern and it will be released when it’s ready, but I don’t know when that will be yet. There are a whole lot of steps left to get through before that day. But I couldn’t wait to share a little sneak peak! Maybe that’s a bad idea... but I miss sharing what I’ve been working on! This pattern has been a labor of love for the last year. I actually redrafted it from the first version I made last year (if you scroll back). Every detail has been researched on these overalls. They are based on bib overalls from the 1920s-40’s. And yes that’s a functional button fly! And repro Union Made buttons and braces from @citronjeans (he can’t ship to the US right now because of coronavirus, but hopefully that will change before long🤞🏻)! There’s a little detail that I plan to alter for the final pattern (the center front needs to taper in at the waist a smidge), but otherwise I couldn’t be more happy with how they turned out! So many construction details that had to be thought through, and I’m still figuring out the best way to describe how to do them in the sewing instructions. It’s a process! But I’m very into it (kind of obsessed). Oh and yeah these are unisex! So if you’re a guy who sews, keep an eye out! I got @jrmcclurg to try them on and they fit him (except for needing some extra length in the torso, which is expected). So much for keeping this short and to the point... When I was in high school I started to feel self conscious about my inability to tan. All of my friends had at least a bit of tan and sometimes people would glare at my legs in summertime and remark on how white they were. I used to try that horrid spray tan in a little bottle I picked up at the drugstore. It gave me that lovely shade of orange, but somehow I felt it looked better than my natural pasty white skin. Then one day I noticed a picture of myself at a party and you could see my white feet and hands, and orange legs. It was kind of hilarious actually! Back then I decided I’d stop wearing self tanner, but I also decided to stop wearing shorts. What a silly girl! If I could go back and tell my 17 year old self a thing or two, I’d include a bit about how my natural skin was beautiful and to stop caring about what others think of me. Most of the time people are too worried about themselves anyway, to think about your insecurities. Anyway, all that to say, I wear shorts now and I’m totally rocking my freckled knees and white untanned legs. ❤️ — P.S. Thanks everyone for all of your amazing hiking boot suggestions! Only a few more days until testing for the #pomonapants is completed! That means you’ll be able to get your hands on the pdf pattern very soon (most likely Monday or Tuesday as I need a bit of time to make any updates to the pattern). And spring has officially begun! Only you would never know it, as we just had a big snowstorm yesterday. What a week! Hope you all are doing okay and keeping your spirits up. How are you holding up? It’s the little things like puffed sleeves and wearing cream/white that are keeping me happy right at this moment. I’ve been listening to a lot of cozy mysteries lately. Secret pajamas (yeah I know some people hate that phrase)... But there are no other words to describe the feeling I get wearing silk #pomonapants ✨ I made them using a light weight unknown silk (feels like silk crepe de chine) that I got from Vogue Fabrics when I lived in Chicago years ago. Fitting pants can feel pretty daunting if you've never attempted to sew your own pants before. I've sewn countless test muslins and will probably sew countless more in the future. If there is one thing I have learned over the years of fitting clothing, it is that it's very easy to over fit. I’ve found that applying little tweaks, done one at a time, makes the biggest difference. Sometimes those wrinkles you see are there for a purpose (sitting down, bending over etc etc.) and if you try to eliminate them, you won't be able to move! I don't think there is a right and a wrong way to fit pants or wear pants. Some people like pants that are tight fitting, while others prefer more of a roomy fit. You wear your pants the way you like to wear them! As long as you feel good in them and you are happy with how they look, that's really all that matters. If you are new to sewing and you are feeling intimidated, please don't feel bad if you don't know everything right away! If you need help, please ask! There is no shame in asking, and there is no such thing as a silly question. A great way to ask for help on Instagram is by using the hashtag #sewingsos (If there are other hashtags, leave them in the comments and I will update this post.) I hope you feel empowered to tackle a project you have been putting off because you are intimidated by it. Crazy how a minor alteration can make a big difference! I made these #philippapants (hacked into jeans, but essentially the same pattern) and the denim I used stretched out quite a bit over time. I would have to spritz the jeans with water and then throw them in the dryer after every wear. By the middle of the day they would be baggy again. So I decided to take in at the crotch and thigh area 1/2”. While I was at it, I let out the calf area as much as I could so the seam from calf to hem was only about 1/4”. Scroll through to see the alteration I made marked on the pattern pieces (the black lines are the stitching lines). The last photo shows how they fit before (although it may be hard to see much of a difference). The fit is great now! I wouldn’t do this on my canvas pants, however. Keep in mind denim tends to give a bit more over time while in my experience, canvas does not (and also shrinks more with every wash as well). • Fabric: Japanese stonewash selvedge denim from @fashion_fabrics_club (purchased last year). I love old sewing books, sometimes even more than the updated versions. I got this used copy of "Grading Techniques for Modern Design" by Jeanne Price and Bernard Zamkoff years ago and find it really helpful to understand how a pattern “grows.” There are illustrations in the book showing how the pattern is divided for grading (swipe to see photo). It really helps my visual brain to understand the process better. I find myself continuing to reference this book every time I grade a new pattern, even now that I grade my patterns digitally.  Definitely check it out if you can get your hands on a copy. ❤️ P.S.
